Africa Air Travel Questions asked

Resolved Question: Avatar, The Hurt Locker, or District 9?

All 3 movies are up for best picture this year. There are others on the best picture list but right now everyone is saying that these three are the top contenders. I enjoyed Avatar and all. And it's by far one of the most visually amazing films out there. It's made by James Cameron after all :P However if you were to take away all of it's visual effects it pretty much turns out to be Pocahontas/Dancing with the Wolves with blue aliens. If you've seen Pocahontas or Dancing with the Wolves. You'd understand what I meant by the story of Avatar being extremely clichéd. Most people will think and say that Avatar should win because all a movie needs nowadays are explosions and shiny things for it to be best picture. I suppose story doesn't matter anymore >_> However if anyone has seen The Hurt Locker or District 9, both are visually amazing and have a gripping story that sends out powerful messages that makes the viewer connect to and think about reality and the many problems embroiling the world. Here's a rundown of what the 3 movies are about real quick. Don't think about the visual effects. Just totally block them out. Think about the story and pick and choose for yourself. Avatar: Set in very distant future. Main character travels to different planet to replace brother. Becomes a Na'vi alien. Can run really fast now and do cool flips in the air. Meets female blue Na'vi. Falls in love with said Na'vi. Decides to switch sides and fight for the Na'vi, because the humans are depicted as typically greedy individuals who want to steal resources. Surprise, surprise. The aliens protect a giant tree and win even though the humans had incredible high tech weapons and ships and the main character ends up living happily ever after with the woman he loves in a feel good almost Disney esque fuzzy ending O__O The Hurt Locker: Based on real life experiences from soldiers and journalists while over in Iraq. Soldier is sent to Iraq as apart of the EOD. An elite bomb dismantling squad. Said soldier and his team face constant death as they try their best to protect innocent civilians everyday from roadside bombs and sharp shooting snipers. No room for error because when you're dismantling a bomb and you make a teeny little mistake you die. Each and everyday is hell for the EOD squad as the struggle to keep everything under control. In the end the main character crumbles beneath the stress of his job and doesn't end living happily ever after even though he tries to lead a normal family life but can't. District 9: Based on the cultural happenings and current problems in South Africa, Tanzania, and other parts of the world where people live in extreme poverty and areas rife with crime, discrimination, hate, ignorance, meaningless violence, and elitism. Main character is at first very biased towards the aliens and sees them as nothing more then animals and scum. However through very clever character development. Irony hits him in the face, LITERALLY, and he is FORCED to become an alien. No choice is given to him. He hates what is happening to him and people begin hunting him to harvest his body parts. And see him as nothing more then a pig up for slaughter. He slowly begins to realize the hell the aliens that landed on earth on going through and connects with another alien named Christopher who has a small son who are both trying to escape back to their home planet. At first the main character is completely selfish and only wants Christopher to cure him and turn him human again. But as time passes he witnesses the brutality the aliens are suffering at the hands of everyone. And grows somewhat of a heart, not a TOTAL heart. He’s still selfish but looks past differences to help Christopher and his son to go back home and save their people. In the end the main character also doesn’t get a happy ending. And instead is stuck as an alien in a garbage landfill. more

Resolved Question: Confessions of an honest black american?

My distant cousins in African live in abject poverty, are surrounded by political corruption and exist in a perennial state of health crisis due to AIDS and other endemic diseases. Yet here am I — as black as they — enjoying the comfort of my modest American home, the owner of two automobiles, and access to the most advanced health care system ever known. Why the difference? It can be summed in simple observation: My African kin are the living legacy of our African heritage. I, on the other hand, am the beneficiary of Western European culture. Granted, that observation smacks of racial betrayal. But it is also a matter of reality. White people, once free from the medieval madness of feudalism, applied themselves to industry and, having learned to bridal social injustice, blessed their cultures – and the rest of the world – with standards of living that would have been the envy of the greatest emperors of antiquity. It was a matter of fate that my ancestors were snatched from their African village by slave traders. Am I glad they suffered the pain and indignities of slavery? Of course not. But I am fortunate. And I am grateful that they got on that boat! There are some who call me a fool for ignoring the lingering injustice that our African American community endures. For every dollar earned by white families, they say, we earn 62 cents. Indeed, statistics are cold calculators that cannot be ignored. $31,969 was the medium income for black families in 2008. White families earned more — much more — $50,673! Families living in Africa, however earned a mere $315. I ask my black American friends: Where would you rather be? In America earning 62 percent compared to white Americans? Or in Africa, earning 1 percent compared to black Americans? Do you not understand that our African cousins would need to work 100 years to earn what we earn in one year? And do I dare mention the Reverend Jeremiah Wright? Shall I mention that, after a career of denouncing our white countrymen, Rev. Wright retired in a white community in a $1.6 million home? Did you know that the annual wages of 5,000 Africans would hardly cover the cost? No, I am not betraying my race; I am stating my case. The descendants of American slaves are the blessed beneficiaries of Western culture. White people gave us flight, electricity and computers. It was their culture that reached the moon, discovered and unraveled the mysteries of DNA, and probed the depths of human anatomy. They attached contraptions on their buggies and, a generation later, drove the world along Interstate highways. They replaced famine with food so abundant that obesity has become our great health concern. They connected us with terminals for traveling through air at 500 miles per hour and terminals for traveling through cyberspace at the speed of light. We gave them the Motown sound. They gave us the technology to allow that sound to be recorded and heard around the world. Lecture me on the evils of the white devils if you will. And, for the most part, I will agree. But I will do so here, in America, not Africa. And I will remind you that in America white people elect black leaders. In Africa black people depose white leaders. And for that, their cultures suffer. How foolish we are in own blind racist rage to destroy the western culture that enriches every aspect of our lives. How foolish to amuses ourselves with grand delusions when, in reality, we are merely regressing to the pathetic lives of our ancient culture. Western culture is rapidly eroding. When it is gone, where will we go? Back to Africa? Back to bathing our babies in cow urine? Back to subsistence living in grass huts? Back to the witch doctors and grotesque lip plates? Back to the bloated bellies of emaciated children? Back to tribal wars and brutal chieftains? Back to ignorance and high mortality? Do we really want to go back to that Africa? Yes, I am grateful my ancestors got on that boat. And you should be grateful, too — while it lasts. more

Resolved Question: Ahh Starbuck you've done it again?

This is what I started and California will take back the state from radical environmentalists. November elections will see a lot of this hoax just disappear and guess what the world will still be here going through its natural processes. Hopefully this will end these radicals reign for a long time. (12-20) 04:00 PST Copenhagen - -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and a swarm of California officials came to the U.N. climate summit last week to brag about their state's accomplishments and show foreigners that it is the cutting edge of U.S. action to curb emissions. But like President Obama, they got caught in a train wreck of discord in the 13-day meeting that ended Saturday, as the 193 nations present agreed only to "take note" of a U.S.-brokered, nonbinding statement of intentions that glossed over the world's differences on who should shoulder which responsibilities in the fight against climate change. The diplomatic clash set up a catch-22 for California. The inconclusive results of the climate negotiations have made the state's leadership in climate policy all the more important. California's aggressive actions on auto emission standards, renewable energy, building weatherization and solar panels are encouraging other states and cities in the United States and around the globe to plunge ahead with their own similar policies. But the stalemate in Copenhagen may also increase the political risk in California, where resistance to the state's climate policies is gathering force. "A train wreck always raises concerns," said Sen. Fran Pavley, D-Agoura Hills (Los Angeles County), who wrote the state's landmark climate-change law in 2006 and was one of the state's leaders in Copenhagen. "It fuels the argument that because of the recession we can't move forward," she said. "The opposition has used the recession to try to do a general rollback, and they may do that here with this." Pavley and other state officials worry that failure of the U.N. climate negotiations will embolden opponents who hope to roll back California's climate policies in next year's election. Ballot measure Conservatives, led by Assemblyman Dan Logue, R-Linda (Yuba County), Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Granite Bay (Placer County), and anti-tax advocate Ted Costa, have submitted to the attorney general an initiative for the November ballot that would freeze the state's compliance with its own climate mandate, the 2006 law known as AB32. GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman has pledged to suspend compliance with the law immediately if elected. "People who are trying to use AB32 in next year's election will use any negative result out of Copenhagen," said Mary Nichols, chairwoman of the California Air Resources Board, the powerful agency that is drawing up the web of regulations that will enforce the bill. "They already believe they've caught something they can use to get people to the polls." California officials have been traveling to climate summits and other diplomatic venues for several years to boast about their track record. By nearly any standard, their pride is well earned. The state is viewed far and wide as a leader in climate policies such as AB32. In the past year, Schwarzenegger has signed several climate agreements with foreign state, provincial and municipal governments, including: -- An agreement with 10 other states in Brazil, Indonesia and the United States to work jointly to protect tropical forests, possibly creating tradeable offsets for California's cap-and-trade program. -- A partnership with the U.N. Development Program to offer technical assistance to Africa for low-carbon development. -- A partnership with Jiangsu Province in China to share policy know-how and to cooperate on technology. It is the first state-level agreement between China and the United States to work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But the crucial phase comes next year, when the air board must release its plans to implement AB32, which is intended to reduce the state's greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. "If this conference does not get a strong agreement, some will say that Copenhagen has failed, that we talk grandly but we are fooling ourselves," and that much like in the fairy tale, the emperor has no clothes, the Republican governor told a news conference Tuesday. "Perhaps the real success is to give us the opportunity to think differently again. Perhaps the success comes in realizing that something different needs to be done and in fact is already being done." Many experts agree. "AB32 is a real leadership issue," said Peter Miller, senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council in San Francisco. "Now that the federal process has slowed, California is more important. It's the same here in Copenhagen. If the forward movement slows, there will be more weight on the sub-national actors." Some studies show that approximately half the overall U.S. emisGreen eggs, they are already out of money. Next year the state will again be short by 21 billion. There is no more help coming, the state will go broke as it should. The average state worker now makes twice as much money as the private sector and the liberals have turned it into a real mess. more

Resolved Question: Are there Budget Airlines in Africa?

Ok, I know this is far away but I've already started planning for my next trip for next November around Africa. I'm getting 6 weeks off of work and I really want to travel to South Africa, Tanzania, Rwanda, Sierra Leon, Ghana and Kenya. What is the best way to travel around these places? Is there a budget airline that goes around Africa? Something like Ryan Air in Europe. Also, is it okay for a single female to travel around alone in Africa? more

Resolved Question: What that cheapest place to fly to and from in the world.?

I have a month to hitch-hick anywhere in the world, and be back to school on Jan 11th. I figured that if it was taking to long to get back I could just fly back. But I live in Michigan's upper peninsula, and air fairs here are up the wall. I'm sure in a months time, I could get just about anywhere, but getting there and back; well I don't want to miss the first day of school, and that might be pushing my luck. If I could get to Canada, or Mexico, would flying be cheaper there? Is there a better place to fly into that is within 1,000 miles of michigan, like Chicago, New York, Milwaukee, etc... I hear traveling in Europe and Africa are really cheep, Would a plane ticket over there from Guatemala be a lot cheaper than from here? I think riding to Guatemala fun anyways. Thanks for all the suggestion, **Stupid people are not allowed to comment.Yes, I have a passport. If a country need a visa, I'll just find some illegal way in. and last time I traveled for four and a half months, and I spent 32 dollars, 30 of that was on a nice back packing backpack. So I think money won't be an issue. But I do thank you for you concern. Anybody out there travel a lot (not for a business, but with there own money, that's not a millionaire?) more

Resolved Question: Cape Town trip planned - Some queries?

Hi Folks, I am planning a trip to South Africa (Cape Town) in the near future and need some advise from someone who has travelled to that place. I am considering booking at Southern Sun, Waterfront which I understand is close to the Green Market Square. For my Lunch and diner arrangements, I am considering taking hotel shuttle service to the V&A Waterfront area which I understand has lots of food stalls and moreover it’s very cheap compared to the buffet served at the hotel restaurant. I am told it’s approx R170 per person. 1. How safe is the V&A Waterfront area ? Is it safe to walk there ? 2. I am also considering “Garden Route package tour” - The same feeling about the safety aspect come up – How safe is it ? 3.I am aware of general 10% tipping of the bill which seems to be the general practice if you visit any establishment in SA. But, what about tipping when you are at the Safari Game drives i.e How much to tip the Ranger, Tracker ? Is it per day tipping or we can tip them at the end of the safari. Can we choose to arrange the tipping (payment) on the credit card 4.Anyone did the Hot Air Ballooning in SA ? Again – Safe, Is it ? Read today’s news regarding Hot air Balloon tragedy somewhere in China which claimed lives of some dutch tourist. I am also thinking of doing the Bill Harrop’s Hot Air Ballooning near Johannesburg. I am having second thoughts after reading the recent tragedy (above). Thanks all in advance. more

Resolved Question: cannibal, would you try? I did..?

many years ago as a young soldier i was posted near a small village on the outskirts of remote Tanzania. one night the chief of the village invited me to participate in a tribal ceremony. The chieftain asked that i be initiated into the tribe and as a custom i was offered a brew made up of the iboga plant.Iboga is a powerful plant which puts one into a trance like state where they recieve visions into themselves. Not wanting to refuse such a great honour i drank the said brew. After a time i became feverish and vomited numerous times .I was shaking uncontrollably and then i entered into what can only be described as a trance. I do not remember much of that night but with what little i do remember i will try to explain to you. After what seemed like an eternity of being in this zombie like state , some of the tribal women came into the hut i was sitting in and offered me some food. I was so hungry after all the vomiting and sweating that i gladly accepted. i could not see very well as it was dark and my vision was blurry from having ingested the brew. I ate what can only be described as cooked meat of some kind . The meat had a strange tangy taste which i had never tasted before and it was slightly oily.I soon began to feel much better and stronger than i have felt before. I then drifted off into a deep sleep and do not remember anything further of that night. The next morning i awoke to find that the cooked meat had in fact come from a human, a sworn enemy from another tribe that had been speared through the torso the day before. strangely i did not feel the urge to be sick . a strange calmness came over me. I left the tribe the following day to go back to my posting and never told a soul about what had happened. About a year later I was shipped to Iraq to fight in the Gulf war. To this day I have never forgotten the taste of the forbidden meat and I have yearned to partake in this pleasure. In a few months i am planning on travelling to the Congo in central Africa where i am told there is a thriving black market trade in bush meat. and i am keen to try some of the local delicacy. However I am looking for a travelling companion who has a strong stomach and doesn't mind the sight of blood. You will have to pay for youre own air fare and accomodation but i'm sure that is a small price to pay for this once in a life time trip. Anyone interested MUhahahahahahahahahahahhaha........ more

Resolved Question: Should smuggling marijuana between lesotho and South-Africa be considered a career option?

Ok this isn't some joke... On the border of south africa and lesotho is the Drakensberg Mountain range, 3200mabove sea level, cold and 1 km sheer cliffs marking the escarpment. Me and my family often go hiking there(we live in S.A) and we always find a group of people with huge backpacks full of marijuana. I believe they are being misused, the hike those mountain passes only at night time, with basically no warm clothes or lights, only gumboots. They can go up and down the entire mountain a day. Below some south african guy buys it(I am sure cheating them) They have the hardest jobs i think but they deserve the money. I thought of enrolling in the air force, traveling europe picking fruits, or doing a Bsc in science. But seriously i dont want to live that way, these guys on the mountain they have a clear goal, survival, they dont care that it's illegal because well its a plant that people buy and it helps their fever. They are true nomads living for life, that sounds like a life worth lived. What kind of crime would I be committing? more

Resolved Question: Is this email a fraud, right?

I've recently known a girl from Africa through email. I posted a message on a English forum to find a pen pal. She saw that and contacted me. I got some strange feeling but I really thought she is just a girl in a bad situation. This is the third email I received from her, and BANG! This isn't right. Something's wrong. It is a kind fraud to deceive me and get money, right? I'm so shocked and confused.... [the third letter] I am more than happy in your reply to my mail. How are you today and how about your health? Hope you are in a perfect state of health? If so thanks are to God almighty. My day is a little bit cold over here in Dakar Senegal. Life in this refugee camp is just like one staying in the prison and I hope by Gods grace I will come out here soon. Honey I don't have any relatives now whom I can go to because all my relatives ran away in the middle of the war, the only person I have now is (Rev.Father John) who is the pastor of the in charge of our prayer’s and church here in the camp he has been very nice to me since I came into this camp. But I am not living with him rather I am living in the woman's hostel because this camp has two hostels, one for men the other for women. The Pastor's Tel number is (+221-764650176) and if you want to speak to me call me through his office telephone number above and tell him when you call that you want to speak with me, he will send for me in the women hostel to come and speak with you. My love I want to go back to my studies but not in Senegal or Rwanda because I only attended my first year in the university before the tragic incident that lead to my being in this situation now took place in my family. Please honey listen to this, I have my late father's fund deposit certificate and his death here with me which shall be used to claim the money from the bank, because when my late father was alive he deposited some amount of money in one of the bank which he used my name as the next of kin, the amount in question is $9.7 (Nine Million, Seven Hundred Thousand US Dollars). So I will like you to help me transfer this money to your bank account and from it you will send some money for me to get my traveling documents and air ticket to come over there to meet with you. I kept this secret to people here in the camp because I do not want anything to happen to my life here so you are the only person now that know about this so please my love keep it to yourself only until the bank transfer the money to your bank account OK. So in the light of above I will like you to keep it to yourself and don't tell it to anyone for I am afraid of loosing my life and the money if people here gets to know about this money until when I will be there with you. Remember I am giving you all this information due to the trust I deposed on you. I like honest and understanding people, trustful and a man of vision, optimistic and hardworking; my favorite language is English because it is my country's general language. Honey I will like you to call me immediately after reading my mail so that I can hear your sweet voice and you hear mine too. So my love as soon as I hear from you promising that you will help me out sincerely then I will immediately send the bank contact information’s to you immediately so that you can contact with the bank for the transfer of the fund to your bank account OK. Have a nice day and think about me. more

Resolved Question: could there be a race of humans in the ocean?

so my idea start back in the early humans stage (Homo Habalis). we used to live in Africa and travel on the shores of the ocean. we probably learned to swim about this time spearing fish and looking for shell fish. the better we got at swimming the more we adapted to the ocean. we gained long arms and legs. at about this time is where my idea takes place. some of the humans could have gone into the forest to live and adapt there. and some could have stayed on shore. we know what happens the the people on the land so i am going to leave them out of this. lets talk about the people that stayed on shore. now this probably isn't what happens but this is my idea. the shore dwellers probably got really good at swimming and there lung compacity got better and better. so they could stay under longer. they adapted to the ocean and there skin probably started to take a different texture from the salt water and there eyes adapted to see under water. they probably evolved more and more to be in the water. then they probably either gained gills or started to breath water out of there mouth and nose like we breath air. the breath in water and there lungs take the oxygen and chemicals we need in and then they breath out the rest of the water (just a thought). all this would have taken millions of years. so we have they could survive under water. now to the evolution part. as we evolve we started hunting and fishing, and eating the fish gave us intelligence eating the meat gave us strength. the Merpeople is what i will call them now ate pure fish and probably seaweed and kelp making them highly intelligent. they probably have conquered the ocean like we have conquered the land. being so intelligent they could easily hide from our unsophisticated submarines and little orb like machines that drop into the water and move very slowly. we dont know much about the ocean but im sure there are humanoid creatures in the water that take our shape but look like aliens to us. they would be way more intelligent then us but in a wrestling match i bet we would easily defeat them. Resolved Question: a quick light/astronomy question...?

What's the minimum distance light has to be away for us to see it with the naked eye, specifically light emitted from stars? For instance, there are stars we may not know exist because their light hasn't reached us yet. At what distance from the earth will that light finally become visible to us? Also, one more question while I'm at it... How is the light actually able to travel that far to begin with? For example, I'm not able to shine a flashlight from my house to Africa. I'm assuming that's because of our atmosphere, maybe? Light gets "caught up" in our air?? I don't know. Thanks in advance for any help. I hope all of that made sense more

Resolved Question: Tomorrow Obama will be 48 yrs old, where was he 48 years ago? That is the important question......?

we all need to know this. Why can't we believe his birth certificate is real? Where was he & what was he up to 48 years ago. Did his mother leave school & hop on a plane to Africa because she thought it was better air conditioned there? How much was plane fair 48 years ago? I never remember people traveling by plane that much...did they take a boat to Africa so he could be born their & put all the republicans in the hospital so the pharmecuetical companies could benefit? No other question should be asked except where was he with that 6lb 8 oz body of his? He was lighter than the aveage boy so that must mean something is up with that. Please only serious answers. Resolved Question: What do you think of this Short story?

The walls were covered with the heads of various types of animals. There was a puma from South America that he had tracked deep in the Amazon Jungle, relying only on the paw prints it had left deep in the mud. He had caught malaria that time, and to this day it still flares up. He had gone to Alaska and shot and killed a timber wolf from a helicopter as it flew over the stormy Tundra. That trip he had lost part of his nose from frostbite trying to retrieve its carcass. He had also gone to the Everglades where he had rented an airboat to begin his hunt for alligators. After exhausting hours of setting traps and searching through swamps he finally caught it. But while posing for a picture with the alligator, holding its jaws open only with his hand and foot, his fingers slipped causing the gators mouth to snap shut. He lost a few toes that day. Today he hides the missing digits with a pair of alligator skin boots. He attributed these accidents to bad luck, but others blamed it on his stupidity. Bruce fist became interested in hunting because of his line of work, or rather because of his boredom at work. He spent long hours in an office doing paperwork for his slaughterhouse, a business passed down from his father. But the only problem was a slaughterhouse isn’t very exciting. It just kills cows. Bruce needed something more alive and masculine. He would have liked to be one of those men who climbed Mount Everest, but sadly he didn’t have the right physique for it. Hunting suited him quite well because he was already comfortable with death. He liked to compare himself with President Teddy Roosevelt, who was a big game hunter, too. Bruce had had many girlfriends, but they always ended the same with him being dumped. He always put his needs before anyone else’s and was unable to relate to them (he was always better relating with animals). On Bruce’s 40th birthday he looked around at all of his friends who were married and had children and found himself having a midlife crisis. It wasn’t the fact that he was not married that bothered him, but that for the first time he felt old. Turning 40 might have made others feel discouraged about visions that they had not completed, but for Bruce it only intensified his reason to travel to Africa. One of Bruce’s goals was to hunt the “ King of the Jungle“. He had read in “Big Gaming Wyoming” hunting magazine that the lion is considered by many to be one of the most respected of the animals because it is so terrifying. After reading that article he became obsessed with killing the large cat. He arrived two full hours before his flight departure Bruce felt relived not having to worry that he would not make his flight on time. He boarded the plane his ticket in hand as he was guided to business class. Bruce had a lot of money he could always afford first class but he liked to think of himself as one of the “guys”. He sat down next to a man and began to make small talk. The air in the cabin was very dry. He got up every few hours to stretch and walked up and down the isles. He put on his sleeping mask and earplugs he had bought in the airport and went to sleep. After awaking he took off his sleeping mask and removed his earplugs he looked down the isle, and saw that breakfast was being served. He got up and hasty rushed to use the bathroom to wash up. He used a wet cloth and ran it over his face and arms. He looked into the mirror examined his dehydrated face and the dark circles around his eyes. He transferred to the next plane and another until he was looking down through the small twin-engine plane window at the golden African plains below him. more

Resolved Question: If everyone is so scared of swine flu then what would happen?

If a horribly lethal virus popped up in America EX.(Ebola- Marburg virus). do you think we would ever get it stopped and also what if it became air born, just wondering if it would mean the end of the world if there was a large outbreak in the u.s.a, I say world cause we travel all over the world and it could get spread a lot easier than what it does in remote, villages in Africa, so If people are that worried about influenza out break what the hell would happen if Ebola or Marburg found its way here, kind of scary I think. Voting Question: What should I do after high school? (Poll)?

Currently I have no really plans for my future. I once dreamed of going to college, and making a ton of money, but then I realized the world really isn't fair and that most people fail and thus gave up on that dream. Currently I'm thinking about: 1. Joining the Air Force (I may be disqualified for ADD and homosexuality) 2. Committing a crime (I think life is too boring and it might be fun to spend a few months in prison) 3. Going to Africa (to volunteer, not sure how to pay or what organizations allow you to visit) 4. Traveling Europe (also not sure as to how I'll pay) 5. Going to some lame state school, getting your average degree and then joining middle America (this is SO boring) 6. Turning on my car, listening to the radio and wait to fall asleep (if you don't get what that means, ignore it) So, what do you think I should do? You can also suggest another idea more

Resolved Question: what do you think of these first few paragraphs of this school project?

my brief was to write an essay from the point of view of someone who thinks slavery was not as harsh as people say it was (the west african slave trade) There is a lot of evidence that can be used in the argument that the meals given to the slaves while sailing the middle passage from Africa to America were not as bad as they are generally thought of as being. People who sailed the middle passage observed that many merchants gave their slaves food from Africa that the slaves were used to (so that they would not be disheartened by foreign food) and foods bought from European countries on their travels. The slaves were also given a steady diet of beans, rice and yams, some reports even describe the food being seasoned with palm oil and pepper. The slaves were given a half pint of water at every meal (there were 2 or 3 meals every day for the slaves). The health provisions taken aboard the slave ships were actually quite advanced for the time, for instance the slaves were given an occasional dose of lime juice to fight off diseases such as scurvy which was a very common disease on ships in the days of the African slave trade. All of the slaves had a period during the day during which they exercised, they danced rhythmically to traditional African music (played by a slave) for a few minutes each day. James Arnolds, a ship surgeon once quoted “it was usual to make them dance in order that they might exercise their limbs and preserve their health”. This helped them remain strong so they were less prone to diseases and helped their general well-being as they had a chance to move around and have some time where they could be away from the ships hold and have fresh air. These efforts to promote health among slaves resulted in a mortality rate of around 10%, though this statistic may look high, compared to the 15% mortality rate of the ships non-slave crew is it relatively good. Another policy that was introduced on slave ships was that if a slave ship maintained a slave mortality rate of less than 2%, the surgeon would receive a £50 bonus which was a very high amount of money in those days, so the surgeons typically would have worked very hard to keep the slaves as healthy as he could. The slaves, although they were used for labour and hard work, The hardship they would suffer was nothing compared to the life they otherwise would have lead back home in Africa. Tribes were constantly warring and life was brutal, people in the tribes back home died en masse as a result of primitive medical resources, war, famine, wild animals and a general lack of education and technology. The life they led as slaves promised food and water daily, which was not guaranteed for an African or even for someone living in a civilized country at the time (during the 1830's the average life expectancy in London was 30 for a person with normal income, a slave could expect to live for as long as 45 years) Slaves had homes with their family and knew that every day they would have a meal and never go hungry, free people at the time generally had low incomes and could not be sure that they would have food and clean water every day. more

Resolved Question: Help! Need name of Teletoon cartoon.?

The cartoon aired on Teletoon when the network was pretty new so hopefully someone will remember it. The cartoon was about this guy who travelled across africa in order to stop an evil talking mask. The guy was accompanied by a man with the head of a rabbit. From what I remember he was extremely annoying. Along with the rabbit/man, he was also accompanied by a girl who the guy was in love with. But it turns out she was cursed by the evil mask. So in the day time, she turns into a gazelle and at night she reverts to her human self. To assist the trio there is a good mask, she provides help to the group in the battle against the evil mask. The whole show is based based on african culture and myths. --I think one of the man characters was named Luke, but I'm not totally sure. --All I remember of the name is "Kasa and Luke" or something like that. Not sure on the title. Help me! I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out the name of this cartoon. If you can help It will be truly appreciated. Also if you know any cartoon search engines, please tell me so if you don't know the name of the cartoon, at least I can make an attempt to find it. more

Resolved Question: What's the best way to get and use frequent flier miles?

My wife is from South Africa and we have traveled there a few times now and look to go back frequently. I didn't bother with FFmiles and used expedia to get the lowest price, but this used two seperate airlines (New Zealand Air & SA Air). At this point should I stick with just one airlines? (New Zealand Air was quite nice). What's the smart thing to do?! more

Resolved Question: Did you know that Oprah and Rick Warren go back a ways?

October 31, 2005 Will Success Spoil Rick Warren? by Marc Gunther Fortune Magazine "After Hurricane Katrina hit, Rick Warren was one busy pastor. He traveled to Houston to preach to 8,000 evacuees in the Astrodome, standing in a skybox next to Oprah Winfrey. He went on the Larry King show to explain how churches were stepping in to do relief work. "He lobbied his friends in the White House to release disaster-aid money to religious groups. And in case anybody missed his post-hurricane tour, his publicist issued a press release when it was done. "In part by campaigning for the job, Warren, the 51-year-old Southern California pastor, bestselling author, and management genius, has become secular America's favorite evangelical Christian. "This year he has spoken at Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, the Aspen Ideas Festival, the Young Presidents Organization, a Pew Foundation forum for religion writers, and the University of Judaism. "He has gone before the Council on Foreign Relations to pitch his newest idea: a breathtakingly ambitious project to mobilize American Christians to fight poverty, illiteracy, and AIDS in Africa. "A protégé of management thinker Peter Drucker, Warren is also cultivating corporate executives. "He calls himself Rupert Murdoch's pastor, he has entertained Jack Welch at his home, and he will meet Bill Gates at a Time magazine conference on global health, where they are both scheduled to speak. "He also has forged ties with celebrity activists like Bono, who arranged to make him official pastor of the Live 8 concert last summer in Philadelphia. ("The only thing I remember about that concert is Linkin Park and a sweet smell in the air," Warren joked to his congregation.) If a middle-aged Baptist minister can be said to possess that elusive quality called buzz, Rick Warren has it right now." __________ Your thoughts? more

Resolved Question: Ah, Desmond Tutu wants white people to go into Zimbabwe and remove the black leader, what is wrong with this?

In 1979, I traveled to southern Africa. On my way home, I read the International Herald Tribune newspaper the airlines provided. In there was a story about Robert Mugabe and his men using a Soviet built SAM (surface to air) missile to shoot down a Civilian airliner. They then went to the crash site and murdered the survivors or at least some of them. The west was all for forcing the white government of Rhodesia to turn control over to black terrorists. At that time, Rhodesia was the bread basket of Africa, exporting food to countries all over Africa. Now, the same people who wanted black control want white people to go in there and rebuild the country. I figure they got what they wanted, so let them enjoy it. BTW, Mugabe was big buddies with Andrew Young, Carter's Ambassador to the UN and Maynard Jackson, mayor of Atlanta, who held a $1k a plate fund raiser for Mugabe and his terrorists AFTER their heinous attack on civilians. I guess we see how good Liberals are at solving problems. If you don't know what I am talking about, then go find a question you do understand. If you need a link, then you need to go somewhere else. more

Resolved Question: Where can we get best treatment for brain tumour for our friend?

Our friend, aged 31, having a brain tumour. We have pretty much typed in the medical report below. Would anybody plz give us some advice where to take him for best treatment or what should we do? MEDICAL REPORT Subject: Mr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX Mr. XXXXXX had advanced malignancy of his brain. The provisional histological analysis indicates glioblastoma multifonne. Additional complications include epilepsy (which has been stabilized using intravenous phenytoin) and thrombocytopenia for which platelet transfusions have been administered) Chemotherapy and radiotherapy may extend his life expectancy, somewhat. His condition is nevertheless extremely serious and essentially pre-terminal. From a humanitarian point of view, given the difficulty of his family to travel to (some place in Africa), air ambulance (ICU) transport to an ICU facility close to his home (some place in south asia) is recommended. Resolved Question: Have you ever meditated on;The Wonder of Instinctive Wisdom?

“Migration is probably the most awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.”—COLLINS ATLAS OF BIRD MIGRATION. ON December 9, 1967, an airline pilot spotted a flock of about 30 whooper swans flying toward Ireland at the amazing altitude of 27,000 feet [8,200 m]. Why were they flying so high, where the air temperature was about 40 degrees below zero Fahrenheit [-40°C]? Besides escaping the persistent snow squalls at lower altitudes, they were riding a wind current that gave them a ground speed of about 125 miles [200 km] an hour. It was estimated that the birds completed their 800-mile [1,300 km] flight from Iceland to Ireland in just seven hours. The world champion migrator—the arctic tern—breeds north of the Arctic Circle yet spends the northern winter in the Antarctic. In a typical year, this small seabird travels between 25,000 and 30,000 miles [40,000 to 50,000 km]—the equivalent of circling the globe! White storks breed in Northern Europe and winter in South Africa, making a round trip of 15,000 miles [24,000 km]. Thousands of these birds pass through Israel in the autumn and the spring, following a timetable known back in Bible times.—Jeremiah 8:7. Who implanted that instinctive ability? Some 3,500 years ago, God posed the following question to the righteous man Job: “Is it owing to your understanding that the falcon soars up, that it spreads its wings to the south wind? Or is it at your order that an eagle flies upward and that it builds its nest high up?” In his reply Job rightly praised God for the amazing abilities of birds and other animals.—Job 39:26, 27; 42:2. more
