Senior Air Travel Questions asked

Open Question: Indians........How many centuries to achieve true empowerment?

Today (8th March 2010) was celebrated as the 100 the 'International womens day'. So, as in the previous years, there was a string of news making activities in the name of service to women..... FOR ONE DAY. Many institutions marked THE DAY with lectures galore; Air India had an all-women crew; President Pratibha Patil conferred Stree Shakti Awards to select outstanding women; the Rajasthan Government ‘allowed’ women to travel free in the State Roadways buses; the Mumbai Police plans to elevate a woman police inspector to the rank of senior inspector; and most of all (hold your breath!) the long awaited women’s reservation bill is hoped to see light at last, (it is hoped) to challenge the male dominated Indian politics. It seemed to me as nothing less than a 'Holi' or 'Diwali' celebration, with great pomp and show. I wonder how much rehearsal would have gone behind it! Several questions come to mind on this 'passing' day... * Do we really need to 'celebrate' this one day, and then forget everything and let women drag along till the next 'Day' dawns? * When we talk of empowered women, isn't it the ‘creamy layer’ that’s showing up,... with a select few from the murky depths of our society? What happens to the women of 'lesser Gods' ? Ref link - http://beta.thehindu.com/opinion/article78285.ece * How many more ‘International Day’s will it take to finally get all women at par with men? * Is this celebration, a definite answer to the unrestrained foeticide, infanticide, discrimination against girl child (at her own home), dowry, destabilizing a married girl from her own home, ill treatment of unwed mothers/ divorced and separated women and single working women in the society,... and many other atrocities against women? * If so, why hasn't the lot of the (really) hapless women improved? Now tell me, what epoch making movement can attack this malady at the root, and put EVERY WOMAN at par with their male counterparts........... with a guarantee for a lifetime? I look forward to your valuable responses. Thanx for answeringYou've all got my question wrong. I have compared the social status of the two genders, and not pointed my fingers at them. This is purely an issue of uplifting the women in our society, and I look to a fool-proof solution, rather than the annual charade, that has completed its 100th anniversary. more

Voting Question: What makes people think that Clinton, had he had another term, or Gore, wouldn't have invaded Iraq?

I am a liberal for the most part, but when it comes to the Iraq War, I think that we were not wrong to invade Iraq. -Saddam allowed the man who mixed the chemicals for the 1993 WTC attack and the "hero" of the Achille Lauro hijacking to stay in Iraq under his protection, along with hosting a bunch of other international thugs. -Saddam had a personal WMD specialist -Dr. Mahdi Obeidi, Saddam's senior physicist, was able to lead American soldiers to nuclear centrifuge parts and a blueprint for a complete centrifuge (the crown jewel of nuclear physics) buried on the orders of Qusay Hussein. -Iraqi officials traveled to Damascus, Syria as late as February 2003 to negotiate to purchase missiles off the shelf from North Korea. -Almost 61 UN resolutions were passed on Iraq and Iraq repeatedly violated UN laws. -Had Saddam remained in power until this time, there very well could have been a nuclear arms race in the Middle East between Iraq and Iran. -Saddam threatened the oil supply of the Middle East several times and had he taken control of the oil fields of Saudi Arabia in 1991, for example, the price of oil would rise to never before seen levels. -There are satellite photographs of Iraqi military vehicles traveling into Syria right before the American invasion. The trucks were the perfect size to be carrying missiles. -In addition to the last point, Georges Sada, the number two man in the Iraqi air force under Saddam confirmed that the missiles were moved to Syria.Oh, and the anti-war movement used to cite people like Joseph Wilson quite a bit, when he was a career liar. As far as people like Michael Moore, Jaques Chirac, and Tim Robbins go- you can clearly tell what side they were really on. more

Resolved Question: My parents won't let me travel on my own?

I am currently a high school senior, and was lucky enough to be selected as a finalist for a full scholarship at a pretty selective college. The school is having me visit for a weekend, and they're paying for everything (travel from ct to ca, food, hotel). I was extremely excited to be chosen, because I would finally have a chance to be independent for once in my life. Or so I thought. When I told my parents about it, they insisted that one of them travel with me, because it's "dangerous". But this doesn't really make sense to me, because I've travelled every year of my life, so I am used to travelling, and when my dad was my age, he joined the air force. How is this anywhere near as dangerous as that? There is no point of them coming with me, and the college even said that it's a weekend for the students, not parents. I understand that the tsa is still on high alert for terrorist activity, but it tends to be like that very often in today's world... I guess I'm just really fed up with my parents because I never have any alone time because they are ALWAYS home (my mom works at home and my dad is retired and they never really leave the house for more than 15 minutes). I am an extreme introvert, so alone time is essential to my mental well-being. So I'm asking if there is any way to convince them to let me go on my own (even though they've already bought their plane ticket), any way for me to get some independence (I can't get a job because I already have too many things to do), and if you think they're coming with me out of concern for my safety or just because they want to go to California.I know I sound really selfish, but since the school is paying for everything, I feel like this should be between me and the school. And I know I probably sound really stupid, but I feel like I will never get to be independent. more

Resolved Question: What kind of summer job can I get at an airport (I'm going to college for fall 2010)?

I am graduating high school this coming June and I am turning 18 in April of this year. I have always had an interest in air travel and would really love to work at the airport because of that. I was thinking about getting a job at my local airport, Rochester International Airport (ROC), for a summer job. Would I have a chance to get a job as a gate agent or working for an airline? Where do I go in the airport to get applications or inquire about a summer job? If it isn't realistic to work for an airline for a summer job (and possibly for breaks too), how would I go about getting applications to stores/food places that are beyond security? Where else could I work at the airport that would be more likely to accept me? Although my preference is to work for an airline (as a gate agent... would be open to a baggage handler though), I wouldn't mind working for another place inside the airport. As for prior experience, I am currently working in a senior living facility as a server and have been there for almost a year now. Thanks to everyone who answers! more

Resolved Question: Where Could Improvements be Made in Our Air Travel Security?

How Many Logical Problems Exist in TSA's Approach? The comments from the White House seem to reveal serious logical problems in the USA's approach to anti-terrorism. There appears to be two lines of defense offerred by the Administration but they are completely inconsistent with each other -- they can't possibly both be true. First they tells us that the report of the Nigerian bomber just got lost in the shuffle. It wasn't properly communicated. If the father's statement to the CIA in Nigeria "My son has been radicalized" had been put together with intelligence reports coming out of Yemen that "A Nigerian man is being prepared for an attack on USA", then the man would have been stopped in Amsterdam and not allowed to board. The other line of defense (100% opposite of the first one) is that "We did have a discussion about this matter between the various intelligence and anti-terrorism agencies at the anti-terrorism center in Washington, and after very careful deliberation it was decided that the father's statement to the CIA was really just a "missing person" report, so it was inadequate to justify stopping the man in Amsterdam, so we did nothing. Inadequate here means there was no indication that a crime had been committed. There was no indication of wrongdoing by the suspect. Everything he was doing was perfectly legal, so we had no reasonable suspicion. This is a major logical fallacy. Most terrorists do not commit crimes prior to their act of terrorism. If the USA agencies are looking for crimes or wrongdoing to support a reasonable suspicion they will never catch a terrorist. Apparently the only thing we are able to do is put out APB's on known criminals. Anybody that's not a known criminal, and that has not done anything illegal is outside our scope of vision or consideration. The "no wrongdoing people" are invisible to us. Al Qaida always makes sure that it's suicide bombers are "no wrongdoing people" right up till the moment of detonation. Operations are cancelled if a martyr is even pulled over for a traffic stop, a broken tail-light, or a case of jaywalking. So, Al Qaida is sending one kind of person, and we are looking for another. They are sending perfectly clean people and we are looking for dirty people. That is our logical error. The White House can't keep its excuses straight. I seriously doubt there was any management supervision in the anti-terrorism coordination center at the time the critical report came in from the father's CIA conversation in November 2009. Congress should find out who the senior manager was and precisely how much experience that person has in intelligence/anti-terrorism. Don't let the agency escape with the "group opinion" excuse -- "we don't know who decided this, it was some sort of group decision, so nobody is accountable for it". It would be right for the Congress to investigate this incident for about 6 months and resolve all the logical errors and contradictions. It would be right for 100 people to be fired, sprinkled through 20 or so agencies. 100 rolling heads make what's called feedback to the professionals in this field -- "Do better work!" It would be right to change the triggering criteria and the active responses in the field. If they don't know what to do -- somebody has to tell them what to do -- very specifically -- and test them to make sure they understand -- like we do in the Navy to make sure our people know how a ship's weapons systems work. How many logical problems exist in TSA's work? That is my question which I seek to obtain knowledge about, and wish could be answered -- would you answer my question? more

Resolved Question: College and The Airforce life.?

My boyfriend and I are best friends, we hang out every single day, i'm best friends with his parents and close to his family. I truly love him and would do anything to be with him. So when he decided to join the Air Force I supported him thinking we'd still be living in Oklahoma when we moved in with each other after I graduated highschool. Though he wants to get based in England or Germany - which is cool with me because I want to travel around the world. But i'm a senior in highschool, graduating in may, and i am determined to attend college. I want to marry him and live with him after I graduate (matter of time wasnt important until he signed his airforce contract, so now figuring out how to be with each other is hard). I am the type of person who always needs a plan or i freak out, so i have absolutely no clue what to do about college! We dont know if he will be based somewhere far or somewhere close until the summer of 2010 which is AFTER i graduate. so i guess im trying to figure out what im supposed to do about college. do i apply for colleges with abroad programs just in case? apply for colleges in the u.s. just in case, or do i just wait until we're based somewhere to start applying for colleges? or is there a college on the airforce base, or on some airforce bases, and how i can get into one of those? and i know that if your married then the spouse could possibly get college paid for, so should i wait for college until im married? because money is an issue too (i need scholarships to go to college!) please help, because the only responses ive gotten is "your too young to move across the world" and "split up cause it's not gonna work". I, am far more confident in my relationship than people think. So advice from airforce wives or even other airforce people would be awesome, and ultra helpful. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Have you noticed how different your needs are the older you become? Forget a 3 bedroom house.?

That just means more house to keep clean. I need that money to travel, and have fun...I may drop dead tomorrow. Since the children and grands just visit - air beds are great. The only thing that stays constant is the need for good friends. They are as precious as your health. Our sense of humour keeps us young. A few good quality items are already on the hangers....No more shopping sprees lets go to lunch! TV is a constant companion that and the telephone is a must. . But the more simple my life now the better. No car, no insurance no gas....everyone else seems to have one! Have your wants and needs changed as a senior ? more

Resolved Question: Advice please....boyfriend's mom and sister hate me!?

My boyfriend and I are going through a rough patch... I was laid off, and my boyfriend and his father have a company together. The business is going slow, and he has not collected a paycheck in about 3 months. We decided about a few months ago that we should move into my mothers house (she travels a lot with work) so that we could get back onto our feet. When we told his mother about this, she insisted that we move into there guest house, so we did. When we moved in, it was great...we had our own little house, and are saving money like crazy!! Then, the table turned....and his mother became a nightmare along with his sister who is a senior in highschool. At first, his mother, sister and I got along great, but recently it seems like they are out to get me :) After a few weeks of living there, his mother found clothing of mine that his sister has been taking from “our house.” The first time I was a little irritated, but that’s when I told her, if she ever wanted to barrow something just come ask. I guess she took it as if I was mad, and went and told her mom that the only reason she took some clothes was because I barrowed her jeans, so she thought it was ok to just help herself. Well...b4 we moved in, we came over to his rents house for dinner and I had a “girl accident” so I asked his mother if I could barrow a pair of jeans, so she let me barrow a pair of jeans that I gave his sister a week ago. The funny part is when she came home she complimented my jeans, and I told her that these are the ones I gave her, and explained to her that her mother loaned them to me b/c of what happened. Anyways... after his sister went and complained to his mother, his mom came down and had long talk with me about how we girls need to stay out of each others closets, so I explained that the jeans her daughters referring to were the ones she loaned to me way back when. But his mother completely just disregarded what I said and gave me a huge lecture on how I need to respect her daughter’s personal space. Well, to this day she still is coming to “our house” and taking clothes with out asking. My boyfriends’ mother and sister are very materialistic, and with the family business being slow, you need to learn to be more conservative. Well one night my boyfriend starts venting to me about how the girls are constantly shopping, and how its frustrating because he is not receiving a paycheck. He goes up to the rents house, and it’s only his sister and his mother there, so he starts talking about the situation with his mom. Next thing I know, I am receiving a tun of text messages saying how I should stay out of the financial part of their family, and how I am using her son for money! First, I have never asked my boyfriend for anything, and I have stuck by his side through him not getting a paycheck...which he is still owed about 8! My boyfriend comes back to “our house” and is HOT in the head over the situation with his mom and sister talking about me, while he was up there trying to have a “business conv.” I never responded back to the text messages, and my boyfriend and I were distant from his mom and sister for a few weeks. When I think things are getting better, just more things come up...and I am about lose it! I am so madly in love with my boyfriend, and even through these hard times our relationship is GREAT!! I am just scared of me breaking down, and me putting a middle finger in the air and walking out...on the best guy in the world! more

Voting Question: which branch of military is right for me? Navy or Air Force?

I am interested in the Air force, and the Navy.I am a high school senior with outstanding grades, so I want to go to college first and get my bachelors in psychology. I have been with my boyfriend for 3.5 years (2 years long distant) and are engaged. He plays college football and is expected to be a first round draft pick for the NFL in 2010. HE DOES NOT WANT ME TO JOIN THE MILITARY, I am considering his opinion, but are still looking out for myself first. I love physical training, and are excited to join the military. A few questions I have are: 1.) Does the navy offer scholarships to a larger variety of schools? 2.) Does the Air force offer more options of where to be stationed? 3.) Is there any way to join either and remain stationary for the entire contract? 4.) Will I be able to have a family upon graduating from college? 5.) Which would benefit me more based on my intended major? 6.) What major would benefit the navy or air force best? 7.) What are my chances of being required to travel? P.S no air force recruiters have came to my school, so i really don't know anything about the air force. more

Resolved Question: I'm a woman considering joining the air force?

I'm 18 years old, and a senior in High school. My ultimate goal is to become a Veterinarian...well, my 20 year old boyfriend has decided he wants to go into the air force. It made me think of the short time when I was considering enlisting in some branch of the military myself. Just as I'm supporting him, he's said that he would fully support me if I wanted to join too. I'm just not too certain though...I already have 10 years of school I need to cover to become a Veterinarian, but then again, the air force could help pay for some of those years in school. My passion lies with animals though...I don't know if there's anything in the military that I could put my whole heart into. What jobs are available? Is it really the smart choice considering my long future in school? I would love to travel during my time with them, what job would I need to be doing in order to do that? more

Resolved Question: I have four algebra world problems I REALLY need help with please!!?

I totally forgot a lot over the summer, please help me find the solutions to these problems and explain to me what equations you set up to solve them or what methods you used to solve them: 1. Danny and his sister Elise are 24 miles apart. They start biking towards each other. Danny rides at a rate of 8 miles per hour, and Elise rides at a rate of 12 miles per hour. How long will it be before they meet? How far will they have traveled? 2. At t=0 seconds, Vicky stood on the roof of a building and threw a ball in the air. The height in feet h(t) of the ball at t seconds is given by the formula H(t) = -16t^2 + 96t +56. a) How tall is the building? (Hint: t=0) b) When is the ball at its highest point? c) To what height does the ball travel? d) When does the ball strike the ground? 3. this year the senior class at West High School and senior class at South High School both planned trips to the state fair. The class at West High rented and filled 6 vans and 9 buses with 459 students. South High rented and filled 3 vans and 7 buses with 337 students. Each van and each bus carried the same number of students. How many students can a van carry? How many students can a bus carry? 4. A punter can kick a football with an initial velocity of 48 feet per second. How many seconds will it take for the ball to return to the ground? (Hint: Use the formula h = vt - 16t^2) more

Resolved Question: senior week blues... HELP ME?

I am about to start my senior year (WHOO!) and my friends and I have begun talking about senior week. None of us are drinkers, and so we wouldn't enjoy the conventional senior week. We don't want to go to Ocean City. We live up near Scranton, Pennsylvania. We all have our licenses. By the date of graduation we will all be 18. We all have cars. Our parents have offered to allow us the use of their air miles they have earned off their credit cards... So traveling somewhere by air is not a problem. My one friend wants to go to Disney in Florida. My other friend wants to go to New York City for a week. I just want to have fun, in a cost effective way. I want to be in a place where there is enough to do. And, I want everyone to be happy... how can I please everyone if noone is willing to sway?!? So, in other words, I need to be somewhere where there is a big city for the one interested in NYC, and somewhere where there is fun & excitement for the one interested in Disney, and somewhere where its relatively cheap, and FUN!(of course) Road Trip was brought up, but we have no clue what destinations we would want to hit. The idea of a cruise came up as well. If we go on a cruise we want to go south, not north & we have to go on a cruise line that allows 18 year olds to take a cabin... we are not taking chaperones. And only select cruise lines allow that... There are alot of pro's and con's for each option... I don't know what we should do. I can't begin planning this, if we don't even know what we are doing. Tell me which ideas sound best or if you have any other ideas to add. Please and Thank You I can't even begin planning if we can't decide what to do... more

Resolved Question: Anything you can tell me about Air Force ROTC? Need MAJOR help!!!?

As a senior in high school, it has come to a time that I must make some major decisions in my life. I have dreams of going to Duke University for pre-med studies, studying abroad and traveling the world, and going to Johns Hopkins University for medical school to be a neurologist or neurosurgeon. However, I'm also short on cash. I make excellent grades in school (approx. 4.2 GPA), and have very high scores on my ACT and SAT, but scholarships can only get one so far when applying to a $30,000+ school. I also come from a single parent house-hold (between $50,000-$70,000 a year) and have a twin sister, even smarter than me, who is also going to college, and we have to go to the same college (sharing a car) for the first 2 years. As I was looking for more choices for financial aid, I though of ROTC. I don't know much about it at all, and it's obviously to late for me to do High School ROTC. What can you tell me about in-college ROTC (how long will it take and how often the training is), the scholarships and pay with different colleges (MSU, Duke, JH), ROTC in relation to my major, life in general for an ROTC, and ****traveling opportunities****? Any info could be a lot of help. So here are my plans so far: Go to Mississippi State University for my first two years while taking ROTC training (if 2 years is long enough?), then, as an official ROTC, transfer to Duke University for my last two years while traveling, and then go to Johns Hopkins while still fulfilling my years of active duty. I don't know how ROTC fits correctly into that since I don't know much about it. I need SOMETHING for more financial aid, so please HELP!!! more

Resolved Question: Traveling as a young student?

I'm currently 15 years old and about to start my Senior year of High School. I have already made up my mind regarding what Universities/Colleges I am going to apply to in September. The problem is that most of my potential colleges may require me to travel by air. I will be just 16 years old when I start college, and one of my worries is if I will be allowed to fly across the country or even across the oceans, on my own. more

Resolved Question: What is your favorite Steve McNair memory?

I'm sure that many will say the Super Bowl against the Rams. I have a different one myself. His senior year at Alcorn State, he had to come to Youngstown, Ohio to play Jim Tressel and the YSU Penguins in the 1-AA playoffs. This was the year he finished 3rd in the Heisman voting (imagine that, a 1-AA player finishing 3rd). He had pulled a hamstring the week before and was unable to scramble that week. As a result, he played the whole game in the shotgun. It was about 20 degrees with a 35 mph wind blowing that day (McNair has said in interviews that this game was the coldest he ever played). Despite his injury and his team being outclassed (YSU would win 63-21 on their way to the national championship) McNair played the most impressive game I've ever seen in person. He was throwing 15 yard out patterns into a 35 mph wind. That means the ball was travelling about 55 yards in the air, and it never got more than 10 feet off the ground. He threw frozen rope lasers all over the field that day. In the conditions, it was the most impressive physical display I have ever had the priviledge to witness in person. I think he finished with something like 563 yards passing that day in what would be the final game of his college career. On that day, I became a McNair fan. Even though I am a Steelers fan, I always rooted for and respected McNair. The Toughest Player of His Generation. HOF 2012REDSKINrey, grow up. more

Resolved Question: Laptop for high school?

I will be going into high school in the fall, and I am going to get a laptop. I want one that is smallish, light, and will last through my senior year. I frequently travel back and forth from my parents' houses, so I need something that will be easy to carry around and will not break easily. I was thinking about getting a 13-inch white Mac Book, but they are kind of expensive and I don't know if my parents will let me get it. Another potential problem is the Mac's compatibility with the school's programs... Will that be a problem with things like powerpoint or word documents? Also, I will be in the Magnet Program and the school has a 3-D printer. (You design an object on your computer and the printer makes a 3-D model out of it.) I don't know if I will be using the design program on my laptop, and would it work on a Mac??? The school has Dell laptops for student use, but we aren't allowed to take them home, and I want a laptop since I go back and forth between houses. My dad said that HP or Toshiba laptops are good, but I looked at them and most of them are on the fat side and kinda heavy... and the slimmer and lighter ones are either netbooks or about as expensive as a Mac Book. Please don't tell me to get a Mac Book Air. Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: Please help me who have done IATA or Air Travel Mgmt ?

This is Demi, I hope you all are hale and health by God's Grace. I have stuck in big problem . I hope u will help me out. Before 4 years back I did my Diploma in Travel and tourism Mgmt , at that moment i was very good in 3letter IATA codes and other topics . Later i tried abt 10-20-interviews , i swear none of them asked a single questions related to technical course , they need only experienced one. Then i worked in small agency about 2years only Domestic Ticketing. I had gone with bad experiences, I love to enhance my international ticktng knowledge but the seniors didnt teach me though i try to learn and ask they would scream and shout at me , Some people forced me to live the job itself. But Now one MNC office have come up to give a good opportunity to IATA or diploma holders..They give international ticketing training. They need only IATA or diploma with all the routings aware and about rt /ct . but simple questions i could not answer becoz all my notes are missing . But i really want this job. Can you please guide me like what are the different types of routings and what is RT /CT and different types of routings in Brief etc. Abt codes i will learn myself but other notes can you send me, if you have . Resolved Question: Who should I sue? My mechanic or my insurance company?

Nine months ago I had a pretty bad car accident with a deer traveling down the interstate at night. The insurance company (Allstate) sent an adjuster to estimate the damages which he did at 7,000 dollars. One week later a senior adjuster also sent by my insurance comes came back and "adjusted the adjustment" by $3,000 stating that the first guy overestimated the amount of repairs. By this time parts had already been ordered and an agreement had already been made with the mechanic regarding his charges. He promised to save us a little money so we used him and not the local dealership. Some 42 days post accident, he finally returns the car to me. Since the insurance coverage had ended on the rental car 12 days prior and this expense we were paying out of pocket, he returned the car saying that the only thing that was left to be done was to have the air conditioning charged, but that it was okay to drive. I promised to bring it back that weekend and I dropped off the rental car and jumped in mine happy to have it back. That weekend I take it to him. He says I can't fix it this weekend and to bring it back the next. While I am waiting for the next weekend my front right headlight goes out. This is the side on which the accident occurred and a new headlight assembly was supposedly placed. But that's okay, I thought. I'll see him this weekend and I'll mention it to him then. The next weekend the guy who he needs to charge it is not there, "Let's reschedule." This we do. But he took a look at the headlight and said it just needed a new bulb. So we head over to the dealership, he buys a bulb and we return to his shop for him to put it on. After supposedly putting it on, he taps the hood, and says you're good to go. He has me test the headlights and all. It was during the day and I stayed inside the car, but I trusted that he had replaced the light and the problem was corrected . . . until that night. I turn on my headlights and only one comes on. NO FRONT RIGHT HEADLIGHT! Oh, and I forgot to mention that during the time of these visits my airbag light came on. To make an already long story shorter, I return to his shop over six times in the next few months and it's always a different story. You have a leak in your compressor tube, I have to order another part, I can't do it this weekend, call me next week. The last time I left him the car to work on, it was for four days. I took on the expense of renting a car while he had mine. I called and made an appointment with him. He agreed to work on it that weekend. When I dropped it off to him I reiterated my concerns and what I needed fixed. His exact words were "I got you." That he did! After four days he had not touched my car. Nothing was fixed! I asked him why and he said that it was raining and that he had cars he was painting inside his shop and he couldn't take them out to get to mine. He said he didn't know why my airbag light is on, and get this, that headlight is okay and that he didn't see anything wrong with it. Meanwhile, my headlight is still out. So, after an oil change I ask the local dealership to take a look at it. They do and tell me that the headlight assembly is broken. But that they could re-wire it, rig it up basically, so that at least it functioned. I agree and this they do. I also begin to notice that the body work on the car is HORRIBLE!!! There is a gap on the right side between my hood and the front bumper. It's properly aligned on the left but on the right there is a big gap! At an oil change the mechanic at the local dealership mentions to me how bad the paint job is. That he never put on a clear coat on the hood. The new finds kept amounting so I called the insurance company back and explained them the situation. They tell me that they can only pay once to have damages repaired. If I took it somewhere to get it repaired and later don't like the work that basically its my problem and I have to take that up with the original mechanic. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. My insurance company isn't helping me. I have a car that has depreciated in value significantly. On top of that it's damaged, doesn't even have air conditioning, and is unsafe to drive with the airbag light on( which while is on, the airbag will not deploy in an accident). I'm thoroughly upset. I want the dealership to fix it and fix it right. I don't want the original mechanic to touch my car again. But I know it's going to cost an arm and a leg! Who do I have the best case against? Do I even have a case? more

Resolved Question: What is going on? Did I do something wrong?

Long story, bare with me..soo this guy and i went to the same high school, and he's a year older than me. we were really good friends my freshman year, and then we hooked up about a week left of school my sophomore year. Then i went abroad to study for a year so we didn't date cuz by the time i got back he graduated and was in college and we didn't want to do long d and we didn't know when we'd see each other again, but we kept in contact. My senior year, he came back for homecoming, and then he was my prom date (he drove 2 hours one way to be my date), was at my graduation even though he was dating someone at that time. Over the summer he did a trip to a couple different places, and stopped in my hometown and we flirted but nothing happened, then he went to see his gf and they broke up (but it was mutual). Then fall of my freshman year in college i told him i didnt want to talk about us anymore. During spring break he took a trip to see his brother and some friends by a city 4 hours away from me, and without knowing i had planned a trip down there with some friends for the weekend so we said hi for about 30 mins. I saw him again over the summer for a couple days but i had been seeing someone during the whole spring and summer semester. then fall of my sophomore year he was going visit me for a long weekend and he made it to the airport but his flight got canceled. Then we made plans to travel during the summer (this past summer), we picked out cities, places to stay...etc but he bailed the day we were supposed to buy our air tickets cuz he got his grades back and they were BAD so he didnt ask his parents for the money. Which brings me to NOW: (sorry!) we stopped talking for a while mid february, when i was making a trip to see my best friend who lives 3 hours away from him so i called him to say hi and see if he wanted to come by, but since i couldnt invite him to crash at my friends place (id feel rude) he didnt come, but told me he was actually flying out to see his brother over spring break, who happens to have moved to where i go to school a year ago. so during the 2 weeks leading up to his visit he msged me evry day, whenever he saw me online and we sms-ed and what not. he gets here, and we hang out over st.patricks day, but his brothers best friend tries to make a move on me (he was joking but im not sure really how much??) and the best friend asks me if thers something going on between me and my guy friend and i said no cause i didnt want to tell him anything. i said that we had always been friends..and then i asked him why and he said he tought that my friend was more interested in me than i was in him and i said i didn't know how i felt about him and left it at that. next day i we drive back to my friend's brother's place but once there his brother's on the comp ,and he wants to go swimming so i say im going home to take care of some things...and thn i never see him again (even though i called about once a day, for 3 days). I didn't call him the day b4 he left hoping he'd call, but i figured he was just busy with his brother so i texted him saying have a safe flight back. close to midnight he sends me a msg and says he had wanted to have dinner with me that night but his brother got into a fight with his gf (brother's gf) and it was awkward and so he didnt call but it was good seeing me and he'd talk to me soon hopefully. i didnt reply two days later i msg him while he's online to say hi and he didnt answer. an hour later (11pm his time) he says he's gtg get dinner, ttyl. i havent talked to him since... at this point i think ive done something wrong, but i don't know what (did i not say thanks to his bro's best friend after we stayed at his place for a night? did i not pay his brother back for a beer he bought at a club, even though his bro bought like 5 in one go? is he not interested? then why did the best friend say he thought my friend was interested in me? he could've just said he wanted to hook up with me so wanted to check it was okay, instead of making up my friend liking me bs..if he was making it up..HELP? can't decide if i should shoot him an email and say "hey i was just wondering if i did something wrong, because for some reason i feel like i did, and i just want to know what it is so i can fix it" more

Voting Question: Yachting or start education?

Hi everybody, First of all, I'm 22 and from Denmark. I am in a very big dilemma here. I have been in the yachting industry since April 2008 - I felt like giving it a shot since it is a great opportunity to travel and to earn and save a lot of tax free money, and since I graduated senior high school a couple of years back have I been it a little bit of financial debt which I also wanted to get rid off by working in Denmark (but it is difficult to pay back any debt when you pay 41% tax). So here I am, one year later after joining yachting almost, rid of debt and with around 15.000 dollars in my account and with a lot of absolutely fantastic experiences and new friendships . However, I really wanna get started on my education in either business or graphics design (not sure exactly which yet). I have promised myself to apply this spring so I can get started in the fall, and then take another season with the yacht which I am employed on now and save up an additional 20.000 dollars during the summer and then go home and start my studies in August/September. However, in one way do I not really feel like getting started on my education, and I have been playing a lot with the though of perhaps finding a yacht that goes to the Caribbean for the winter and explore the Caribbean as well and save up even more money. But when does it end? If I do that I will start my studies when I'm 24! I want to pursue a bachelors degree within the business area, and perhaps some education within either design or the movie business (not sure) - either way, it is definitely last call now. - the money would be absolutely great to have while studying. If I did another year I would have around 50.000 dollars saved up - good amount of money to kickstart some investing or entrepreneurial ideas of mine. - if I start my studies this summer I will only have around 25.000 dollars and will be stuck in my studies for the next three/four years at least, and I really wanna go to the states for a term or two during my studies, but I do not want to be way too old. What should I chose? The money which gives me more air and freedom while studying or start my studies without too much money and just bite the bullet. Note: My studies will be free since education in Denmark is payed by the government, so the money should only be for my own pleasure and to go travel or to pursue some investment or business ventures which I have in mind. more

Resolved Question: A question for women in the Air Force?

I'm 18 and a senior in high school. I got accepted to Marquette University, but lately I've started rethinking the idea of going to college, or at least postponing it. I'm interested in the Air Force because financially it seems more logical. I'll have to get loads of financial aid and scholarships to go to college, but by joining the AF I can still get educated without aquiring debt. I also want to be of some use and I have so much respect for everyone that serves for our country, I'd like to be a part of that. I'd also be totally up for traveling and learning new things. But I have a lot of questions, especially for women recruits. Do I have a good chance of being accepted to the AF? (I'm an honor roll student, and in good shape to say the least...I play rugby ^_^) Are the stereotpyes about women in the military true? Do they provide career training that is also useful outside of the military? (I'm interested in Psychology, Communications, International Affairs). Are women ostracized, or is everyone accepting of them in the AF? I'll probably have more questions later...Thanks more

Resolved Question: If you are joining the air force, then is the mental part as difficult as they say?

im 17 yrs old almost 18. i really want to join the air force but the whole mental part is really scaring me. My ex joined and he made it. I don't know what the physical training is like and the whole metal part. I am a girly girl and no body can picture me joining, but it opens so many doors for me, and i want to travel. Is the mental part really that bad? is the yelling part unbearable? What is the physical part of it like? I will be stationed in texas and im super nervous. i haven't even signed the papers yet, i get to graduate at semester my senior year and im worried that when i sign i will get scared and cant turn back. If your in the air force and your family member gets suddenly do you get permission to leave? If you could please give me as much advice as you can i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you more

Resolved Question: I want to be a pilot - ROTC or Service Academy?

I am currently a high school senior and recently had the epiphany that I do not want to sit in a cubicle for the rest of my life. I want to to travel and do something that I enjoy and maybe even fulfill my dreams of being an astronaut, it seems that becoming a military pilot is my best solution. My problem is that it is far too late to apply to either the naval academy or the air force academy, I would need to apply during my freshman year in college. This leads to me to question whether it would be a smarter move to just go through a college's ROTC program than go to college for a year and then go to an academy for 4 years. I plan on getting into a good college, top 5% of my class, 35 on the ACT, 1450 on the SAT. So would it be worth it to apply to an academy next year or just go through the ROTC of a school like Duke or Cornell, which path would give me a better chance of being a fixed wing aircraft pilot? Also, if going to college for a year and then applying to the academy for a year is the best solution, how do I go about that. I know most applications for nominations and things of that nature require current high school information and not college information. Another question I had was if the Air Force or the Navy is a better solution to becoming a pilot. I mean I would be kind of bummed if I dont become a pilot so I want the best chance possible. Since I ultimately want to be an astronaut, I was thinking Navy was the way to go since it seems that becoming a Navy test pilot was the best way to become an astronaut. Any information would be quite helpful, thanks. more

Resolved Question: Navy Life Vs. Air Force Life?

OK this might be easier if i ask. Im a senior looking at college, and had planned to do ROTC with the air force, and now im trying to apply for the Navy too, a little late but still applicable. Now on the off chance that i get both i dont know which i should take. My father things that best choice for what i want to do would be air force. What id like to do is go to college and get my degree in aviational science, along with my private and commercial lisence. Most likely though i wont get either scholarship, those things are competetive. So what i'll be doing then is Enlisting... i just dont know which of the two branches id like. I want to fly, and if im in the air force they have bigger planes like refueling planes that would be closer to commercial planes. But from what i understand the navy gives you more of on opprotunity to explore the world which is another main reason for me to enlist. Base life seems interesting to me too. So if there are any navy/airforce enlistees on active or were on active duty out there that could help thatd be sweet. What i want to know is your opinion on which is better for schooling if i enlist right away, what basic training is like, what the entire experience was like for you, how base life is, which travels more. All around which one is better. And if you dont mind, what your status was so i know your not just a civilian with a theory... unless you know your stuff. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Now that a fatwa has been issued, will the Shoura Council allow women to travel without a mahram?

Issue of women traveling without mahram sparks debate http://www.saudigazette.com.sa/index.cfm?method=home.regcon&contentID=2009010225531 JEDDAH – Leading Saudi cleric Sheikh Abdul Mohsen Bin Nasser Al-Obaikan’s views on allowing women to travel freely without having a mahram (a male relative with whom marriage is forbidden) has sparked a debate in the Saudi society. Al-Obaikan, a member of the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars and Advisor to the Ministry of Justice, in a statement to Al-Hayat Arabic daily on Dec. 22 said he has found in his recent research on women’s travel without mahram that it is “permissible” in Islam for a woman to travel alone without being accompanied by a mahram only when she feels secure. Al-Obaikan first published his views in his website saying a thorough research on the subject has made him satisfied that a woman can travel without a mahram or without the consent of her male guardian if she feels that she is secure. Several Shoura (Consultative) Council members and businesswomen have felt encouraged to act on the fatwa issued by Sheikh Al-Obaikan. Shoura members have favored an open discussion on the issue in the Council. “It is a very important step to begin with. If we can remove this obstacle, our movement will become much easier,” said Aziza Mansour, businesswoman and owner of Aziza Mansour Company for Real Estate. “I need to travel several times a month, but every time I need to take permission from my husband’s brother as my husband died several years ago,” she said. “The existing regulations on women’s travel make my business trips difficult and it delays several of my business deals,” she added. Mansour has called upon the Shoura Council to remove this obstacle and put a system that allows women above 35 years or so to travel without requiring consent from her male guardians. Dr. Talal Al-Bakri, chairman of the Social Affairs Committee in the Shoura Council, hoped that the system could be discussed in the Council. “I will be the first to vote for it,” he said. Al-Bakri added that Sheikh Al-Obaikan has been requested to discuss his views in the Shoura Council meeting. Dr. Sadaqa Fadel, chairman of the International Political Relations Committee in the Shoura Council, also said he would vote for the new proposed regulations on women’s travel when it is put for vote in the Shoura Council. An academic has also advanced the cause of having a system allowing woman to travel without a male guradian if she travels by air and there is no khalwa (close proximity) between her and other men in the flight. “This fatwa allows women to travel without consort if she makes sure that she will not be seated next to a man,” said Dr. Ahmad Al-Sheaibi, professor of Islamic sociology at King Saud University in Riyadh. There are dissenting voices as well. “The fatwa is not acceptable at all,” said Hissa Own, political writer and chairperson of Al-Bidaia Holding Company Group, the first Saudi company owned by a woman. “A woman can ensure her safety onboard, but not after landing and arriving in the new destination,” she argued. “Although I am a businesswoman and I need to travel to several countries, the consort system never bothers me,” she added. You gotta love Al-Obaikan. He sure is stirring things up.tel02469, A fatwa is a religious ruling. Some are mundane, some are extreme, some are ignored. This one has some weight. A Saudi cleric has ruled that Islam allows women to travel without a male companion. It. could be game changing. more

Resolved Question: A car skidded off the road and hit a low stone wall. Glass from the windscreen was found 4.0 m in front of the?

car windscreen in the field. (i) If the height of the middle of the windscreen is 1.2 m, estimate the speed of the car as it hit the wall. (ii) Why is this value likely to be lower than the actual velocity of the car when it had been on the road? CAN ANY OF YOU CHECK FOR ME THE FOLLOWING SOLUTIONS? The solution for (i) is Using projectile motion, the vertical component consist of the following parameter: u = 0, a = = 9.81 m/s, s = 1.2 m, find t Using s = ut + 0.5 at^2 Using 1.2 = 0 + 0.5 (9.81) t^2 t = 0.49 sec Using t from above and considering the horizontal motion of the projectile, R = v t v represents the velocity of the glass chip (which assuming it represents the velocity of the car), 4 = v (0.49) v = 8.16 m/s The solution for (ii) is FIRST OPINION A) Contributed by my students, OKR and LSH and partly myself (Group B) (i) the question specifies that the RANGE = 4 m (ii) comparing 2 systems: - Air resistance experienced by the car (which is LOWER) - Air resistance experienced by the glass chips (which is HIGHER) (iii) R = v t, R is constant, therefore glass chip will take longer time to reach the same range of 4.0 m, since the velocity is lower due to air resistance. (iv) This lower value of velocity compared to the higher velocity of the car is the solution to the above said question (ii) SECOND OPINION B) Contributed by myself (i) The system is consisted of 3 things P = front portion of the car Q = crumple zone of the car R = the windscreen In the sequence of impact energy transmitting through P, Q, R (in this order), (ii) the P part is traveling with say 15 m/s, but abruptly reduced to 0 m/s due to collision. (iii) the Q part is the crumple zone experiencing the damage. It takes some amount of time before the impact is transmitted to the windscreen. (iv) while this process occur, the velocity of the windscreen is reduced from 15 m/s to perhaps, 14m/s, 11 m/s, 10 m/s, 8.16 m/s. (v) as the windscreen starts to break, the glass chip, due to inertia, refuse to stop it's motion, continue to travel with the velocity of 8.16 m/s. (vi) Conclusion, the velocity of the glass chip is less than the actual velocity of the car, so it can't represent the velocity of the car accurately. THIRD OPINION C) Contributed by my senior lecturer in the institution that I'm in, Mr.Leong "There's a lost of energy during the impact and the glass chip will have lower velocity as energy is proportional with v power of 2." Are FIRST, SECOND, THIRD OPINION THE BEST SOLUTION FOR THE QUESTION? more

Voting Question: College boyfriend of 3 years looking to join the air force after graduation...?

Here's the deal. We've been together for about 3 years. Both seniors in college. I will be graduating but he still has 2 years left. We started a long distance relationship a little over a year ago that is going quite well. This may I plan on moving back to his area (where we are both from) and start my life. I will be living on my own with a career and everything. I am very ready to start my life. My boyfriend on the other hand feels like he is going no where with school. Resolved Question: boyfriend interested in the air force after college...should he go?

Here's the deal. We've been together for about 3 years. Both seniors in college. I will be graduating but he still has 2 years left. We started a long distance relationship a little over a year ago that is going quite well. This may I plan on moving back to his area (where we are both from) and start my life. I will be living on my own with a career and everything. I am very ready to start my life. My boyfriend on the other hand feels like he is going no where with school. Resolved Question: Which military choice is better: Air Force or Army?

I am a senior in my highschool, and have chosen the military lifestyle for when I graduate. I have narrowed it down to two choices: AF or Army. I have spoken with recruiters on both sides, both saying they will have lots of money for me and help me get through college. I can't neccissarily decide on which one to choose, I like computers and both say they have a great deal of jobs dealing with computers. AF says they have a great travel plan, but the Army says that they can prove to be a better choice by giving me great bonuses. So far, both sound almost about equal and I would like some more input as to which would be better. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Why to the Saudis want to fingerprint peaceful pilgrims?

The headline: Saudi to fingerprint all Hajis from this year The link: http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticleNew.asp?section=theuae&xfile=data/theuae/2008/august/theuae_august541.xml The story: From this Haj season, all pilgrims entering the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be photographed and fingerprinted. Haj and Umrah contractors in Abu Dhabi fear that the new system will cause delays for pilgrims, especially for those travelling by land, and hope that the Saudi authorities will be able to put in place an efficient and quick screening process. The system, which officially started in July last year to screen all visitors and expatriates residing in the country, will now be used to screen over a million pilgrims entering the country via land and air, according to an announcement made by a senior Saudi official on Saturday. Brigadier General Zaid Al Turaifi, Director of Saudi Arabia's Passport Institute in Riyadh, announced that the institute is currently training its personnel in the system, which will be implemented at both King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah and Prince Muhammad bin Abdulaziz Airport in Al Madina Al Munawara. After a person is fingerprinted, all relevant information, including the person's full name, employer, and the validity of his or her residency permit or visa, is stored in a database. The Saudi government hopes this will prevent people from staying in the country illegally after their visas expire, and help track down criminals. more

Resolved Question: I'm a high school senior interested in Navy and Air Force ROTC/academies. The problem is, I can't decide!

Air Force and Navy have their pros and cons...I'm interested in Computer Engineering or Information Technology. Both academies have computer-related majors but what I'm really looking for are opportunities to gain experience relative to my major while in the service (i.e. Navy IP option or Air Force Cyber Command). I also want to be able to travel all over the world - I know the Navy has a great travel opportunities but unsure about the AF - I know the AF has bases all over the world but would I be stationed at one for 2-3 years? Secondly, I'm constantly debating whether I'd be better off in ROTC or in an academy. I'm pretty sure I'll only be in for 5-8 years but who knows...I might enjoy it so much that I would decide to stay in...and if that happens I would be better off with an academy degree. However, I don't want to spend 4 years of my life doing things that won't be worth it if I decide not to stay in for 20+ years. more

Resolved Question: What is the reason for houses in the East having front doors 6 feet in the air?

We are traveling East of the Mississippi and have seen many houses in New England and today, Ohio that have high front doors with no porch or steps, or they have a 2nd story door opening onto the sloped roof of the bottom floor. Why? These doors are completely useless and detract from the house. Thanks East coast seniors for enlightening me..Cheryl the one we saw today was fairly new { 5-10 years or so} all beautifully landscaped, just sitting there with it's door 6 feet off the ground..Another theory..I was told today that the house is left unfinished, no steps or porch, so the property taxes are low...unfinished houses have a lower tax rate... more
