Resolved Question: Hint, tips, advice & feedback for planning a England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland in 2011?

Slowly planning an overseas trip with 2 girlfriends for 2011 - around the July/August/September period as we want to include the Edinburgh Tattoo. Has anyone flown Air Asia? I've heard good things, but wondered if it was too cheap and nasty?? Does anyone have any good website for travelling tips? I already use Trip Advisor to check out hotel reviews Whats the cheapest and easiest way to contact family whilst over there? Also, what's the best way to hook up to an internet connection to check emails etc? I'm looking at getting a little notebook (laptop) closer to the time of travel to take over there (know I need to take it on the plane and remove battery for going through check in/security etc). Any recommendations for a good notebook?? Also tips for travelling with it? Can anyone recommend accommodation they know of that do Triple Rooms or have 3 single beds? Not fussed how cheap it is - happy to economise here! Can't seem to find a search-able accommodation site where I can search by the number of beds per room - if you know of one that would be great!! Have looked at Travelodge which have great prices starting at 19 pounds per night but they don't seem to have triple rooms/sleep 3 separately, so we'd need to book 2 rooms. Not sure that it makes it a cheap option necessarily! Does anyone know any other cheap hotels/chains? I know there's a lot located in service centre places just off the highways - eg has accommodation, food, petrol stations Money saving ideas, and tips for travelling in the UK etc would also be very much appreciated. Last time we shopped at Tesco and made packed lunches so that saved a little. General international travel tips welcome too!!! thanks!!!! more

Resolved Question: This was a rather odd, semi-long dream.?

I had a dream that my brother got his license and was driving our family car. We were going to the mall, when my brother crashed outside the Air Force Recruiting Office. Well, somehow, he managed to crash into the Recruiting Center without hurting anyone, but knocked out all of the glass walls that had the Air Force logo on them, most of them with only the center knocked out. He was threatened that the MP would come and arrest him and my mother came up to get us. In the dream, we were both had supernatural powers. My brother had the ability to time travel and his emotions caused his powers to act up, transporting us back about 20 years into the past. Going to the past somehow screwed up my budding powers to where I shed glass, and it hurt me to do so. I was shedding glass on my arm and inside my nose. My mother's maternal insticts, thank God (even though I hate her in real life and she has none), knew that we were her kids when we told her. However, we had a famous actor for a father (the guy who played Bill on Kill Bill). Well, I'm gay, and my first lover was in the car. My family doesn't know I'm gay, though. We went to a hospital to find out how I could stop shedding glass and there was another psychic woman in the library. We asked her and she was being tracked by psychic killers. She was walking with me and there was a rack on a wall reading "Spiritual Energy" with cheap metallic logos and little designs. I told her I was really interested in learning about that (in real life, I'm clairsentent). Then a man walks by me and asks me which one I liked best. There were many, but there was this one-of-a-kind one that seemed to pulse energy. I chose that and he tried to kill me. My family had went to the car and I had disabled the man usuing telepathy, a power I used to have control over. After a chase, I somehow was thrown out of the car and had to run down an alleyway to meet them on the block over. There were 2 cars chasing me, and shooting with automatic rifles. I turned around and mentally slammed the cars into an abandoned building, causing it to collapse (somehow, this event seemed significant in my dream). I met back up with my family and we went to my grandmother's house. To get up to it, we had to climb up stairs made of flowers (and not unrealistically so). Just before we got to her house, it was surrounded by dirt, then wooden stairs to get up to it. We knocked on the door and she told us to go wash and that she'd have us for supper. We told her we needed to tell her and her husband something important. (My biological grandfather "Big" Rudy was there, though I didn't feel that a significant part of the dream, though I never met nor dreamed of him). After that the dream ended. The main things I want to know, is what shedding glass means, what was the significance of the building collapsing, and what the Air Force logos mean? *I'm signing on with them. It's been a lifelong goal to join the military, though I origionally wanted Army. more

Resolved Question: Burning question on aircraft saftey..?

Now my friend here is a qantas enginer..he is responsible for every use by date and wear and tear of every conciviable part of the plane... I put foward to him why does the aircraft industry, not just build a saftey capsule that can float and is self sufficent on pressured oxygen and can act like a bouncing ball as to not get lodged or break up on landing or atmospheric turbulance such as ,hurricanes and lighting and hail.. with a parachute device that can be deployed for a guided landing. I realize the main objective for airlines is to get as many bums on seats as cheap and safley ,as possible on any given day,and to derive asubsatntial profit for that practice 365 days a year.. BUT surley for those who say it would not be viable to build or sustain or be profitable as on going bussines concern..I SAY to them there material to build such saftey device is there , these days the exco skeleton of plane would be cheaper to produce as the main expense would be concentrated with in the capsule,,and other saftey feature would be passengers would fly seperatley from cargo and and passengers would only carry an over nite bag with them and obtain clothes via the sale of main ticket at the destination of any airport .and on return these close can be put foward on cargo planes.making it the priority for the capsules to be free of any clutter other than the human body and essential supplys ,such as fisrt aid and survival packs..My friend supprised me and he sai amzingly that was the first question i asked my self,as maintance engnieer,,,and he was answered. then many people would have no job... well I KNOW ONE THING jobs can be re- created...insurances can charge more on ur saftey rather than ur demise.we have the means of the super higway of comunication to advertise ..do bussines from a stroke of a finger and not depend others to get things done for us...no long is there a comuincation interfernce with the airwaves ..to endanger lives and the flying of the airplane in a saftey mode.. THE TRUTH is that the current shape and idea of flying is very very very old the whole concept has to be re desingned and re calabrated not as a sausge with jets or properlers.but as a self genrated disk or oval shaped derigiable...and another thing.... it seems the only education in piloting the skys is the art of the BENELI effect ..surley there must be other ways of piloting space and atmosheric presures..? so i would like to know what ur views on this is... are we going to ply suasgages for the next 50 years or procced to a new concept of air travel and its saftey for its passangers....? more

Resolved Question: POLL: would you stand to fly?

Would you give up all amenities to travel by air? $6 flights to offer standing room only: A European carrier will test dirt-cheap 'vertical seating.' One catch: You'll have to pay extra to use the toilet. European airline Ryanair is determined to install stand-up airline seats -- even though regulators say the setup doesn't meet safety requirements…The stand-up seats will have safety belts; Ryanair says the seat belts will go over passengers' shoulders and will conform to all regulations. Resolved Question: Moving from Morgantown, WV to San Antonio, TX?

OK, so I have a lease in Morgantown, WV that's going to be up at the end of May 2011, and I've decided several months ago I want to move to San Antonio, TX... I was down there several months ago on vacation and really liked it. Plus, when I compared the Cost of Living, several sites had San Antonio cheaper than Morgantown (I couldn't believe it!) Anyway, the only possessions I have worth taking are my laptop, iPhone, clothes and linens, a box of DVDs, a small box of books, an air mattress (which I have a feeling will come in handy at first), a TV, DVD player, PS2, and a few other small (yet sentimental) possessions. Everything is going into my car (an 01 4 dr Saturn SL1) My questions are... How soon should I look for an apartment/job? I was thinking 6 months in advance, start apartment hunting by making phone calls and taking a week off to go down there and check them out... and about 1-3 months in advance of job hunting. I don't mind working odd jobs at first. How much should I save? Since I am "traveling light", I plan on saving anywhere from $3K-$5K (target $4K) to move... you know, in case I can't find a job when I first get there (what an economy! woo!) Any/all advice you all can provide me would be MUCH MUCH appreciated. I will be glad to clarify/follow-up as needed. more

Resolved Question: How much money in $US dollars do I need to stay in Thailand (Koh Samui) for 2 weeks?

My husband and I never got to go on a honey moon and we are now planning, FINALLY! Our first amount of saving is about to come from his tax refund, so i wanted to get an idea of how much we need and other advice on traveling. We would love to stay for 2 weeks, but may just have to deal with one. There are a few key things we want to incorporate into our trip that you should keep in mind before helping us: 1. We want to go to an Elephant camp where we can interact with them. 2. We want to go diving, or snorkeling at the discovery center. 3. My husband would like to have one on one training at a Muay Thai gym, for at least 4 hours. 4. I would like to relax while he does this, possibly at a spa, if i don't think it's too expensive. (This is not a must for me, but he is insisting that I try it so he can go and do his fighting thing...) Anyway, those are the only things we really HAVE to do... we are open to any other suggestions, and we are wondering where the cheapest air fare is going to be, from what we have seen so far the tickets from Charleston SC - Koh Samui is going to be roughly $4,000 alone (according to expedia). Also give us some good hotel ideas that won't break the bank. I am curious as to seeing if we have found the least expensive way to go here. more

Resolved Question: Cheapest way to travel Europe (Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Brussels) by train?

I am going to be traveling to Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, and Brussels (in that order) this June and was wondering what the best/cheapest way would be to get to each of those cities (air or train)? I have seen that there are passes you can get for an allotted amount of travel days in a month but they seem on the expensive side. Would it be cheaper to by a ticket at the train station for each trip or would getting a pass be a better idea? Should I even bother looking into flying? more

Resolved Question: Why fly with EgyptAir based on reviews they inspect before posting? If you want to know the truth, read on...?

To all of you thinking about flying with Egypt Air, I would like to make sure you think very very carefully before you book with this airline!!! My mother in law was stuck in Cairo as all UK airports were closed from Thursday 15 April 12:00 due to the volcanic ash; she was due to arrive Thursday afternoon. Staff in Cairo were so unhelpful, not caring about a poor old lady travelling on her own worried about not being able to get to the UK to see her son. This seemed to be the case with all passengers; lack of communication, guidance and effort seemed to be the biggest frustrations. They were put into the most amazing hotel on Thursday night only to be kicked out onto the streets of this foreign country by the hotel the day after telling the passengers that Egypt Air would only fund ONE night and that they need to leave. I myself always look for cheaper travel options and have previously considered flying with Egypt Air; sadly I was the person that recommended the airline to my mother in law based on the price. Walking the streets alone back and forth to and from the airport with all her luggage asking every single person for help yet Egypt Air were just as unhelpful and unwilling to go even an inch further than what they're paid to, what happened to taking some pride in your work? Broke and not knowing where she will be sleeping on Friday night and even if she'll be able to get to the UK she ended up flying back home abused and battered throughout her journey. We will in a few weeks time pay for another ticket through A DIFFERENT AIRLINE. I don't care how much cheaper Egypt Air is to any big parastatals out there, you can at the end of the day not put a price on having a peace of mind knowing that even if you don’t get from A to B, that you’ll be taken care of either way. I also spoke to their UK office, this experience could mostly be prescribed as RUDE and unhelpful, but also a “don’t care” attitude, ironically I phoned through to their sales department. I’m sorry I wasted even more money thinking that I would get anything more out of the UK office than the treatment they received in Cairo. I will go to the ends of the earth to notify every single person I know that Egypt Air is no more than a glorified bus, they’re very willing and happy to take your money when you get on, but couldn't care less if you fall out of the window while on your journey!! I am embarrassed for ever recommending them to somebody I know, this will never happen again!!! They don't deserve the honor of flying anybody anywhere no matter what they charge!!! more

Resolved Question: Materials Suggestion anyone?

I have a friend who just got his first leg prosthetic. I want to make a cheap and simple sensor device basically made of air bubbles. the first set of air bubbles would be under his foot prosthetic. The connected second set on his thigh. When he steps on the heel of his foot, it compresses an air bag, which the air goes through a small tube to another air pocket that would be strapped to his thigh where he can feel the pressure from the air. The second air bag will be at the tip of his prosthetic where his toes would be. This would also be compressed and the air would travel via a small tube to another air pocket on his thigh. My question is. what would be a good material for these air bags? more

Resolved Question: Getting to San Diego from San Jose?

I'm planning to visit a friend down in San Diego, and I was wondering what would be the best way to go about doing that without a car. So far, here's a list of options that I've already researched. All of the below quotes take into account the round trip. Keep in mind that my departure date is set for May 12th, 2010. Air Travel - $141 (http://www.tripadvisor.com/CheapFlights?geo=60750&travelers=1&cos=0&nonstop=no&airport0=SJC&nearby0=no&airport1=SAN&nearby1=no&date0=20100513&time0=anytime&date1=20100518&time1=anytime) Amtrak - $104 Greyhound - $116 -and that's it. My friend used to tell me he took a some sort of "superbus" (i don't know the name anymore) that got him there for less than $50 for the whole trip. If anyone knows any details about this... superbus (lol) I'd love to know more about it, or if there was a cheaper, more efficient means of travel, I would be very grateful. more

Resolved Question: I have a few questions about air travel. Like what you can and can not bring now?

I am going to Central America from the US. Work is sending me for 2 week to do some volunteer work. The last time I was on a plane was back in the 90s. The two other times I have ever been on a plane was over 20 years ago. I just have some questions about things I can take with me. I know a lot has changed sense 2001. First I would like to know what is the size limit on a carry on bag. Can I also bring a computer bag, or any other kind of bag with my carry on. Like a backpack, or just a shopping bag with stuff I bring back. I just ask, because I am a guy, and a women can have a purse. If I say it is a man bag, or European shoulder bag can I get a way with that. Now for what I can bring in my bag. I was told you can't bring shampoo, or liquid things any more. I was also told you could, but they had to be the travel size ones. Can I bring this stuff if I put it in those see through travel size bottles, or does it have to be the real bottle it came in. Can I bring razors. The cheap Bic ones. Now for the big question. I need to check my blood sugar twice a day. Can I bring my meter with me. It has the things you pick your finger with to check you blood. I also have pills I have to take twice a day. Can I just bring my little pill box with what I need for each day, or do I need to bring the whole bottle for every one of them. Do I also need a note from my doctor for all my pills. It is an Intrenational flight, so I don't know if there are different rules for that kind of flight. I am just taking a carry on with me, so that is why I want to know what I can bring. I don't want to check my bag, because I don't want to wait around to pick it up after I land. Thank you for any answers you can give me. If you can only answer some of them that is fine. At least I will know more then I do now. more

Resolved Question: Does fermenting a mash to a very high alcohol percentage produce off flavors when distilled?

I ask because I have extensive knowledge of home brewing and often travel to Bulgaria. There, I take pleasure in observing how they make rakia, or brandy, from wild-fermented fruits. They rely on air born yeasts to do the fermenting. Air born yeasts are cheap and efficient, but I doubt they can get anywhere close to something like a champagne or brandy yeast, which can get up to 13 to 18%. Using these would seem to give a much greater yield than the air born yeasts, which can't get much over ten. But would undesirable flavors creep into the final product by having such a high alcoholic mash? What stops them from using a high quality, isolated strain of yeast besides availability? more

Resolved Question: I;m planning a trip to Hawaii - any experience with traveling first class on Alaska Airlines?

I am planning a trip to Hawaii for myself and my 80 year old father. Since it's a very long flight from Orlando FL to Maui I want to fly first class. I've done several searches with multiple travel websites and the best first class fare I can find is on Alaska Airline. It's not just a little cheaper than the other airlines it's a LOT cheaper which causes me a bit of concern regarding quality. Does anyone have experience flying Alaska Air? Particularly first class. What does everyone think. Any recommendations as far as Alaska Air or any other airline?Thank you - all of you gave excellent answers. I wish I could choose all of them as "best answer". I am choosing the best answer mostly because I was asking for any personal experience. For the other two - I wish I could give you extra points because your answers were very helpful as well. more

Resolved Question: anyone know anyone that lives in the metropolitan area of france? and wants toget something free? literally...?

this is a dumb reason, but my bf's air france mileage account is about to expire in a couple of weeks. he has a lot of miles saved up and doesnt want to lose them. he's wont be traveling within this short period time, so we figured out a way to renew or extend the period of his mileage account. buy something from the air france e-shopping. they had the cheapest object for 5 euro, perfect no problem, lets buy it, but when we found out the cost of the shipping to the US it, was like 35 euros!!! i checked the cost of the shipping within France and it came out to only 6 euros! so we thought...heck, why dont we just buy the gift and mail it to some mistaken address in france and forget about it, but then i thought, what if theres problems afterwards or something. i have no friends that live tehre, no one, so i was wondering if theres anyone in france that cares to recieve a stupid little 5 euro gift fro air france???? anyone???? if i mail it to a mistaken address, what would happen? i mean they would mail it back to the air france e-shopping departement and take back the mileage or what would happen? more

Resolved Question: Cheapest month for flights to London from Ireland (various airports) during summer, (Long Question)?

O.K, So I'm planning to go to London for 2 days (1 night) during the months June, July and August. I have 3 options of who to fly with. Aer Arann from Waterford to Luton. Aer Lingus from Dub - Heathrow, Aer Lingus from Cork - Heathrow. and Ryanair from Dub - Luton. The problems that arise for me is that Aer Lingus is very expensive for me (I'm only 17) But, it goes to Heathrow which is the best and closest airport to London (besides London city airport, but thats out of the question) and cheapest and quickest for transport so I can have more money and time to spend in the city. Ryanair is the cheapest but goes to London Luton which is further away and will take longer and more money to get to the city thus shortening my trip and budget. Aer Arann is Cheaper than Aer Lingus but again, it goes to Luton (read above why thats a small problem.) BUT! Waterford airport is 20 mins from me so I wouldn't have to spend money on transport to the airport and I would get more sleep and more money to spend, maybe. So anyway! My question is. Which do you think is best to go with. Also, what is the cheapest month for air travel to London, how long is the tube ride from Heathrow Airport to London city center (by Madame Tussaudes or Tower bridge lets say) And how much is it? Is there a Tube from Luton Airport to where I said above, if so. How long? and How much. Would the bus be cheaper or quicker? (I doubt it) Travel tips and advices would be greatley appreciated please. Please try to stick to the point I'm on about. I cant fly from or to Shannon or any other places very far away from me, nor to Stanstead (very much to far away I think). If you find any cheaper airlines then say so. But so far they are the only ones that I find reasonable. This trip is just for fun with Friends because I love London, and its the closest and cheapest place for a proper 2 day trip. I know I'm kind of rabbling on about how I want you to answer this question, I apologize. best answer gets 10 points. Thank you in advanced :D more

Resolved Question: UK Vacation: Ireland, Scottland, Wales, England?

I'm planning a vacation to the UK and want to see everything there is to see. I'll be there for about 10 days. The cheapest way for me to get to the UK from the US is to fly into Dublin. So, I'll be beginning the trip in Dublin. I'd like to end the trip in England, probably London. So, where do I need to go and what do I need to see in all of UK? I know Ryanair has a lot of cheap flights, so I'll probably use Ryanair to travel from city to city, unless there are trains or a ferry where the view and sightseeing is better by train/ferry than air. I think there is a ferry that may go from Ireland to Scotland? Anyways, as many details as you can provide would be very much appreciated. I have no idea where to begin in what we must see and do. Also, where do we stay in these countries? I'd like to keep the vacation fairly cheap, but won't stay in a hostel. Thanks in advance!I'll be traveling sometime between May and July of this year. more

Voting Question: DIY project assistance?

Hello all, I am looking for somewhere I'm able to buy small hobby sized gears for a project I'm building. I need to reduce the speed of a powerful 12V DC motor similar to the one you'd find in a small cheap air compressor to drive a piston I'm building to pump water slowly. I'm looking at reducing the speed to as low as 30RPM which should allow plenty of force from the high speed motor to drive a piston head up and down a PVC pipe. I'm not sure of the motor I'm after yet but I know the motor will output 15,000 to 20,000 RPM and will have to travel through several gear-sets to reduce to the 30RPM as not to over-do my DIY piston (its more for show anyway so low speed is good). So what i'm asking you guys is: 1.) Where can I buy gears needed in Australia (preferably near Adelaide so I won't need to post them and they are only needed small. Also I probably won't want plastic due to the force and high speed) 2.) What type of gears should I use (Worm or normal etc.) 3.) What ratio will I need through each set to achieve such a low speed? For example 50:1 (input 50 rotations to output just 1)Thank you for your answer A.V.R., you make a good point of a bicycle wheel being used however, it is very large. If there is another option I could use which is much smaller it could be more helpful. I will keep the bicycle wheel in mind as it is a very good idea and cost-effective. more

Resolved Question: What is the one place on earth that you've visited which exceeded all your expectations, on a spiritual level?

Around ten years ago I went to Israel and decided to visit the dead sea while there. It wasn't a particularly special thing to me...I'd seen the dead sea in magazines and on TV...it looked interesting/fun but nothing "out of this world". Israel was a last minute holiday destination because it was cheap - so I never even planned the location, let alone what to do once there! The dead sea area was ...well... let me tell you this first: I've been to India (of which there are many stunning parts), Sri Lanka, Maldives, Egypt, America, Thailand, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Turkey, Tunisia, Morocco etc and I've seen beautiful views. I've been to jungles riding on elephants, deserts riding on camels and spent the night under the stars. In other words, I've travelled some. More than most and less than others. Often when I see beautiful views I stand and stare...to soak it all in... (whether great salt lakes, desert mirages, houses in Pompeii, collosseum of Rome or Pyramids of Egypt)... but after 5-10 minutes I've had my fill and walk away satisfied, the picture in my head and a pleasure of seeing first hand something that I'd only previously read about or seen on television. After I finished bathing in the salt water of the dead sea (and showering off quickly afterwards, because that stuff really STINGS - or at least the mud does!) we travelled down the road and pulled up to relax and have a quick drink. Walking down to the waters edge I was stunned at how still...really still without a ripple...that the water was. It was as if it was truly dead and devoid of life. The air was warm and the beautiful mountains stood tall and magestic opposite the lake, reflecting perfecting in the still dark water. Nothing stirred. The place was relaxing yet eretheral, it almost felt holy (and I'm not a religious person) and it was definitely spiritual...yes spiritual. I've never said this about a place before. I couldn't with hand on heart say exactly WHAT was different, but I can tell you that I wanted to stay there and soak it in. Nearly 40 minutes passed and I couldn't get enough of it...I didn't want to leave, but we needed to get back before dark. To this day I can't tell you why, but somehow for some unexplained reason, this is a special place. Does anyone else have a similar story? Not the club 18-30 type holiday location - but a special location which took your breath away and left you unprepared at the everlasting memories it would leave you with? Please share. more

Resolved Question: When is the best time to buy Air Fare tickets for March?

I'm planning a trip out to Austin, TX for a Music Conference that goes from March 15th to March 21st. I'm planning to arrive there on March 14th & plan to leave (or get back here to NYC) on March 21st (I'm not planning to go to the last event of the conference.). I've checked Priceline, Travelocity, etc. Most of them have expensive prices like $689 round trip on either Priceline or Travelocity (I don't remember which one.). Although, when I went to Kayak.com I saw $220 Airfare & couldn't believe what I was seeing (I chose Hotwire & some other Low Fare engine to compare each other to that Kayak.com has you do.). Now, I'm assuming the Air Fare is Actually $440 WITHOUT the Hotel?? Right? I mean, last yr. I went to Nashville (late July) & I paid $467 from Orbitz.com, but wasn't aware that even though I was checking under the Lowest Fares under the "Flight & Hotel" Category I thought $467 INCLUDED the Hotel Stay (Duhhh...etc.). Only to learn that when I got to Nashville I found out that the Hotel was SEPARATE from the Air Fare. SO...etc.: 1) When is the Best time to purchase these Air Fare (& Hotel) Tickets for my March trip (now, Jan., Feb. or 1st week of March) for a LOW - CHEAP PRICE (Under $500)? 2) What IS a Travel Package - How does this work? OR 3) What does a "Flight & Hotel" Category do for you when it seems like I was paying SEPARATELY (Hotel & Air Fare)? *****I'm not looking to Sight See. I'm going down there to look for any opportunities in the Recording Studio & Music Scene. I've heard that there's A Lot of Live Music (Bands) down there AND A Lot of other Diff. Types of Music (It's a "Business Trip". Not a Vacation.). Please let me know. I really don't know how this system works. Any Help would be appreciated. more

Resolved Question: flight refund insurance?

I had a flight booked with Easyjet (£150) from London to Geneva on the 22 of December, but due to illness was unable to flight. I booked another ticket with Air France for the 24th of December (£300), that was the cheapest one available (no Easyjet). I do have a travel insurance with Insureandgo (Silver). What will they cover? more

Resolved Question: What knitting needles are accepted for air travel?

I really don't want my project to be confiscated or to lose any needles. I know the simplest answer is to take cheap needles or a self addressed envelope to send things back to myself in case they are taken. I'd like to know if the TSA is more likely to take metal needles as opposed to acrylic or bamboo ones, or if length, etc. matters. I'm OK with knitting straight on circular needles if they are more likely to let me keep those. I've read the TSA guidelines which say that it's OK to take any type of knitting materials on board, but I know that it's up to the TSA officer. Anybody with personal experience that can share? more
