Open Question: Does fermenting a mash to a very high alcohol percentage produce off flavors when distilled?
I ask because I have extensive knowledge of home brewing and often travel to Bulgaria. There, I take pleasure in observing how they make rakia, or brandy, from wild-fermented fruits. They rely on air born yeasts to do the fermenting. Air born yeasts are cheap and efficient, but I doubt they can get anywhere close to something like a champagne or brandy yeast, which can get up to 13 to 18%. Using these would seem to give a much greater yield than the air born yeasts, which can't get much over ten. But would undesirable flavors creep into the final product by having such a high alcoholic mash? I am planning a trip to Hawaii for myself and my 80 year old father. Since it's a very long flight from Orlando FL to Maui I want to fly first class. I've done several searches with multiple travel websites and the best first class fare I can find is on Alaska Airline. It's not just a little cheaper than the other airlines it's a LOT cheaper which causes me a bit of concern regarding quality. Does anyone have experience flying Alaska Air? Particularly first class. this is a dumb reason, but my bf's air france mileage account is about to expire in a couple of weeks. he has a lot of miles saved up and doesnt want to lose them. he's wont be traveling within this short period time, so we figured out a way to renew or extend the period of his mileage account. buy something from the air france e-shopping. they had the cheapest object for 5 euro, perfect no problem, lets buy it, but when we found out the cost of the shipping to the US it, was like 35 euros!!! i checked the cost of the shipping within France and it came out to only 6 euros! so we thought...heck, why dont we just buy the gift and mail it to some mistaken address in france and forget about it, but then i thought, what if theres problems afterwards or something. i have no friends that live tehre, no one, so i was wondering if theres anyone in france that cares to recieve a stupid little 5 euro gift fro air france???? anyone???? if i mail it to a mistaken address, what would happen? i mean they would mail it back to the air france e-shopping departement and take back the mileage or what would happen? moreResolved Question: help on finding the best traveling site?

O.K, So I'm planning to go to London for 2 days (1 night) during the months June, July and August. I have 3 options of who to fly with. Aer Arann from Waterford to Luton. Aer Lingus from Dub - Heathrow, Aer Lingus from Cork - Heathrow. and Ryanair from Dub - Luton. The problems that arise for me is that Aer Lingus is very expensive for me (I'm only 17) But, it goes to Heathrow which is the best and closest airport to London (besides London city airport, but thats out of the question) and cheapest and quickest for transport so I can have more money and time to spend in the city. Ryanair is the cheapest but goes to London Luton which is further away and will take longer and more money to get to the city thus shortening my trip and budget. Aer Arann is Cheaper than Aer Lingus but again, it goes to Luton (read above why thats a small problem.) BUT! Waterford airport is 20 mins from me so I wouldn't have to spend money on transport to the airport and I would get more sleep and more money to spend, maybe. So anyway! My question is. Which do you think is best to go with. Also, what is the cheapest month for air travel to London, how long is the tube ride from Heathrow Airport to London city center (by Madame Tussaudes or Tower bridge lets say) And how much is it? Is there a Tube from Luton Airport to where I said above, if so. How long? and How much. Would the bus be cheaper or quicker? I'm planning a vacation to the UK and want to see everything there is to see. I'll be there for about 10 days. The cheapest way for me to get to the UK from the US is to fly into Dublin. Hello all, I am looking for somewhere I'm able to buy small hobby sized gears for a project I'm building. I need to reduce the speed of a powerful 12V DC motor similar to the one you'd find in a small cheap air compressor to drive a piston I'm building to pump water slowly. I'm looking at reducing the speed to as low as 30RPM which should allow plenty of force from the high speed motor to drive a piston head up and down a PVC pipe. I'm not sure of the motor I'm after yet but I know the motor will output 15,000 to 20,000 RPM and will have to travel through several gear-sets to reduce to the 30RPM as not to over-do my DIY piston (its more for show anyway so low speed is good). So what i'm asking you guys is: 1.) Where can I buy gears needed in Australia (preferably near Adelaide so I won't need to post them and they are only needed small. Also I probably won't want plastic due to the force and high speed) 2.) What type of gears should I use (Worm or normal etc.) 3.) What ratio will I need through each set to achieve such a low speed? Around ten years ago I went to Israel and decided to visit the dead sea while there. It wasn't a particularly special thing to me...I'd seen the dead sea in magazines and on TV...it looked interesting/fun but nothing "out of this world". Israel was a last minute holiday destination because it was cheap - so I never even planned the location, let alone what to do once there! The dead sea area was ...well... let me tell you this first: I've been to India (of which there are many stunning parts), Sri Lanka, Maldives, Egypt, America, Thailand, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Turkey, Tunisia, Morocco etc and I've seen beautiful views. I've been to jungles riding on elephants, deserts riding on camels and spent the night under the stars. In other words, I've travelled some. More than most and less than others. Often when I see beautiful views I stand and stare...to soak it all in... (whether great salt lakes, desert mirages, houses in Pompeii, collosseum of Rome or Pyramids of Egypt)... but after 5-10 minutes I've had my fill and walk away satisfied, the picture in my head and a pleasure of seeing first hand something that I'd only previously read about or seen on television. After I finished bathing in the salt water of the dead sea (and showering off quickly afterwards, because that stuff really STINGS - or at least the mud does!) we travelled down the road and pulled up to relax and have a quick drink. Walking down to the waters edge I was stunned at how still...really still without a ripple...that the water was. It was as if it was truly dead and devoid of life. The air was warm and the beautiful mountains stood tall and magestic opposite the lake, reflecting perfecting in the still dark water. Nothing stirred. The place was relaxing yet eretheral, it almost felt holy (and I'm not a religious person) and it was definitely spiritual...yes spiritual. I've never said this about a place before. I couldn't with hand on heart say exactly WHAT was different, but I can tell you that I wanted to stay there and soak it in. Nearly 40 minutes passed and I couldn't get enough of it...I didn't want to leave, but we needed to get back before dark. To this day I can't tell you why, but somehow for some unexplained reason, this is a special place. Does anyone else have a similar story? Not the club 18-30 type holiday location - but a special location which took your breath away and left you unprepared at the everlasting memories it would leave you with? I know the simplest answer is to take cheap needles or a self addressed envelope to send things back to myself in case they are taken. I'd like to know if the TSA is more likely to take metal needles as opposed to acrylic or bamboo ones, or if length, etc. matters. I'm OK with knitting straight on circular needles if they are more likely to let me keep those. I have a month to hitch-hick anywhere in the world, and be back to school on Jan 11th. I figured that if it was taking to long to get back I could just fly back. But I live in Michigan's upper peninsula, and air fairs here are up the wall. He is only in this scene and never returns at any part of the book. The room was dim lit and lifeless. The scent of cigar smoke hung in the air so heavily that the cheap Seventies wallpaper now clung to the mildewed wall in peelings. A low tempo Blues song was sputtering out of the low quality speakers that were shoved into the wall of each corner in the room. Behind the counter stood an old bartender cleaning out the glasses that had piled up over the past weeks. There were few people scattered among the many empty tables, an old muttering war veteran, a silently weeping widow, a young man staring at divorce papers, and then sitting in the back corner was another man who was often overlooked as the lighting made it hard to see his shadowy figure. He was in his mid- forties though his face which was masked with wrinkles of stress made him look far older. He was in deep concentration as he had his head bent over a large book that was laid open in front of him. The man carefully picked up his two dollar beer replacing its space on the table with the weight of his hand to keep the table from tipping on to its almost broken leg. He took a quick swig of the beer and put it back. Lifting his much tired gray eyes from the page he tugged at his short tousled beard in frustration. The illusory man looked around at the piece of crap that passed off for a bar. It was mostly deserted except for the regulars that wasted away their sorry troubled lives there. But that is why it was the perfect place for the current task at hand; there were no big masses of people to bother him yet it was not empty enough to arise suspicions. The man was sitting at his favorite table in the very corner of the room. The chair squeaked and the table always looked as it was about to collapse but he sat there regardless. He could see each person that came in, not that many did but he still kept his eyes open for the right person. His eyes turned back down to the list of names in front of him. His finger traveled down the page looking for the perfect name, the perfect person, the one that would be cursed with this gift. His eyes narrowed at the name he had stopped at. The man’s dry lips cracked into a deceptive smile showing his tainted yellow teeth. “Perfect,” he said in satisfaction his quiet chuckle filling the dim lit room. Reaching for the small square object that sat on the table to his left he carefully tucked it away in a small packaging envelope. THIS IS A BIT LONG READ IF YOU HAVE TIME: Do you think that we'd be able to get a business class seat if we don't buy it way ahead of time but just try to upgrade exactly 24 hours online (Air Tran's rule) before the flight takes off. This is my problem. We received two free tickets for a trip and we have to fly air tran, but my husband is sort of a bigger guy, (think football player type) and we need a bigger seat for him. I hate for him to have to squeeze into those tiny air tran coach seats. Anyway I've seen Business class on Air tran and that would work fine and we could enjoy a trip to Vegas then. But the tickets are only good for coach and then the only thing we can do is buy the upgrade to Business class for about $99 each way which we can afford. (NOTE: But we can't afford an entire new ticket in Business class since that's 1,000 bucks and they won't let us use our coach ticket towards the more expensive Business class ticket.) Anyway the people on the 800 line said the only way to do it is to wait till 24 hours before the flights to try to get a 99 dollar ugrade to Business class online but it is "first come first serve" and if people pre-paid for the expensive Business class seats at $1,000 the 12 seats could be sold out totally I guess too, sooooo,,,, now I'm worried we'll have this huge trip planned , hotels etc.,and at the last day before have to cancel it and lose my free tickets since my husband might not fit in the little seats and they might force us to pay for an entire last minute extra seat for my husband which we couldn't really afford at $500 coach either,and Business class would be sold out. Would like to see Turks and Caicos but don't know if there is a good 4 night cruise from Miami that goes there. I am a little bit at a loss as to where to turn. Although I never expected it, I found myself playing the role of an Army husband. I spent a couple of tours in the Navy and have worked at NASA for years where at least Mission Ops is a quasi-military organization. I knew what to expect and I am comfortable with the culture. Because of my career I elected to maintain our residence in Houston, at least for a few years when I could take an early retirement. At that point I was willing to become a camp follower. Everything seemed to go well, at least at first when my wife was stationed here in the states. However, when she deployed to Korea things took a turn for the worse. It seems like she started a whole new life and it didn't include me. And barely includes her son (my stepson – he lives here in the Houston area) I tried on numerous occasions to go and visit but it seemed that “Army things” always came up unexpectedly and the trips had to be canceled. When she returned to the states I was planning to take a few weeks off and accompany her to her new duty post in Colorado – however after a few days she announced she wanted a divorce – no reason given – and said she would be making the trip alone. After getting settled in Colorado she decided that the divorce was a mistake and she wanted to continue being my wife. Hind sight now tells me that the divorce ploy was nothing more than a method of keeping her Army life and her family life totally separate. Over the past seven months I have tried to travel to Colorado almost every weekend I did not have mission support. It has never worked out once. My money makes the trip but I never get to follow. I even made it all the way from Houston up into New Mexico once before she called and said she unexpectedly had CQ duty for the weekend. Another aborted trip. I have no reason to stay married to her except that I love her – the money flow has always been from Houston to where ever she is stationed. The only benefit I get from the military is an ID card so I can purchase my smokes cheap. After the latest failed trip I drove to a reserve base and talked “unofficially” to an Air Force Chaplin. He made a number of attempts to call her and try to talk to her about the situation but all calls went unanswered and unreturned. However, I got a shrill response about how she did not appreciate me going to see a Chaplin and how I should not bring anyone else in on our problems. When I said that I thought that we really needed some form of counseling to be able to work out whatever issues we had, she went back to the “I want a divorce” position. She now states that she does not want to be tied down someone with so many medical problems – I have had 11 surgeries including 3 heart procedures in the past 3 years so she may have a point. There are no major military bases close to me so I don't know what resources are available to me. If a divorce can not be avoided , thats fine, I have my own income and my own medical insurance so I will survive. However, it seems next to impossible to work a divorce with someone who is stationed outside their home state. What help is available to to an Army husband sort things out? I sighed loudly. For 13 years I had been living like this. Circus performing, travelling, home-schooling, and never doing anything other than these three things. Ava, Jay and I, me being the youngest, were taught trapeze as soon as we could walk. We have lived in the same caravan, our whole lives, and have been travelling with the Galliano circus, for as long as we can remember. Sure, it’s been great, we’ve been to many more places, than your average teenager and we’ve had heaps of great experiences. But recently, things have been beginning to change. Ava, now sixteen years old, is sick of dancing, and wants to stop performing, and the circus manager, Digby, is now considering dropping Mum and Dad’s act, for a younger, new couple from Russia who are more experienced. At the moment, I’m praying that it’s going to be soon. One cheap, rusty caravan can only handle so many storms. Well, it happened. One week ago. Henry came over to our caravan, with a large white envelope. He sat down, and explained to us, that our time at Galliano’s was finished. The cast would miss us terribly, and that our family was a huge loss to them…. Blah blah blah. He gave Dad our final pay package, and then told us that when the circus moved on to Cornwall, in the next few days, that we could quietly depart. I think Mum was a bit devastated really, since we don’t have any place to go. ‘What are we going to do Jerry?’ she sobbed ‘Don’t worry, love’ he said kindly. ‘Everything will sort itself out’ Ava jumped for joy, and even Jay started dancing, until he crashed into the ironing board, and Mum scowled at him. ‘Mum! It doesn’t matter any more! We’re going to go to a normal school and we’re going to have a normal house! With furniture that doesn’t fold out!’ I shouted loudly. Over the next couple of days, we packed up our belongings. I didn’t have much. Just a small brown, box with a few books, some clothes, and some stringy home-made jewellery. I am about to start my senior year (WHOO!) and my friends and I have begun talking about senior week. None of us are drinkers, and so we wouldn't enjoy the conventional senior week.
