Bahamas Colony Questions asked

Resolved Question: Would you read this book?

Okee! I have an idea for a historical fantasy novel for teens. Tell me if you would be interested in reading a book like this: The revolutionary war has turned Cornelia Farr's world upside down. She lived in London with her brother James and her parents. At the beginning of the war, her father goes off to war as a general to crush the rebellion. Its 2 years later: James has run away from home to be a soldier. Cornelia and her mother are now living alone off the Farr fortune. When Cornelia's mother falls ill to typhus and dies, Cornelia is left alone. She decides to pack away her things and go to the colonies to find her father. To get there, she manages to buy a berth on the ship the Amanda Arden. The Arden is capitaned by the jolly David Gibson and his handsome first mate, Thomas. During the trip, Cornelia has to get used to living on a ship full of men. All is not as is looks like. Cornelia is soon informed that the vessel is a secret ship that will carry supplies from the Bahamas to the patriot forces in the colonies. While the crew assures her that she will be able to get to Boston, it will take longer. Cornelia starts to get used to life on a ship, even starts to enjoy it. One day though, her beliefs in the real and make believe are truly tested. Magical Sirens attack the ship near the Bahamas! Cornelia has to steer the ship from some dangerous rocks and in turn, send the Sirens away. Soon, she is informed, the Sirens were sent by the ancient godess of the sea, Tethys. Tethys has a secret deal with the captain from many years earlier and want to get her end of it. Cornelia, like a sensible person, does not believe this, even with the events of before. When an evil Kraken bent on sinking the ship attacks the Arden, the crew and Cornelia start believe in this. While damaged, the ship manages to continue on its missions. Everything changes when Tethys decides to make the trip to the ship herself and make sure she gets what she wants, where Cornelia finds her beliefs and courage truly tested. I wont say the ending, but I could really use anybodies opinion!PS: Please review only if you like to read! Jeez, the first 3.... more

Voting Question: What do you think about Hugo Chavez telling The Queen to give The Falklands back to Argentina?

Here is the story, http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20100224/twl-give-back-the-falkands-chavez-tells-41f21e0.html Considering that The Falklands were British before Argentina existed as country their 'Claim' to the Islands is some what void. Argentina didn't want to respect the wishes of the Falkland Islanders, when they invaded the Islands in 1982 pointing a Gun Barrel at the Islanders who want to remain British, they will remain a British Colony for many years to come. As for Hugo Chavez he's a third world tin pot dictator, does he really have the right to make such demands from a person as powerful and respected as Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth II is head of state and Queen for: the United Kingdom, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu. Is Chavez a Comedian or a President? more

Resolved Question: USA AT WAR WITH EUROPE? (PLEASE READ BELOW)?

I am doing research for a paper set in an alternate reality and would LOVE to hear the opinions of some AMERICANS, especially servicemen. The scenario is: Without warning the USA launches a surprise nuclear attack against china and destroys it, the Chinese counter attack is ineffective. The world is shocked and outraged by this. The USA then sends its elite and rapid response units to the far east to contain what's left of china. Within a few weeks of skirmishes China surrenders and humanitarian aid is allowed in. This attack is claimed to be in self defence though is used as an excuse to instigate martial law and set up a police state in the US, a shadowy new government has taken over. The rest of the world fears that the US will not stop at this. Russia claims that if the US launches another missile she will retaliate for her own defence and EU intelligence points that Europe is next. Rather than wait to be attacked the EU puts together a secret plan to launch her own non-nuclear surprise attack aimed at the USA's ability to wage long distance war and its militaristic leaders. The raid consists of submarine launched cruise missiles, and long range bombers and air-launched cruise missiles. Within 24 hours a 1/3 of the US air force is destroyed as well as the entire Atlantic fleet and the east coast command centres. Both the EU and US cannot use their nuclear arsenals due to the threat of a Russian counter attack. After five/six months, the EU combine forces have withstood air raids against their colonies in the Caribbean, launched further air raids from these bases to the east coast and have driven the US navy from the Caribbean as well as US ground forces from the Bahamas (Protecting Florida) in very bloody battles. With air bases set up in the Bahamas the east coast and Florida are hit heavily, with the US losing air superiority. The EU is ready for an amphibious invasion of south Florida to build further air bases to reach the central USA and to destroy the oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. The EU hopes this be enough to bring the USA to the negotiating table. NB: This scenario has been heavily researched and is held to be realistic (as far as stories go). The above is only a casual outline. (hope you enjoyed it) YOUR OPINIONS ON THE COMING INVASION PLEASE more

Resolved Question: Decendents of Slaves in the US?

I am a Biology/History major at U of Arkansas. I'm specializing in Physical Anthropology ( Studying past people). This is not intended to start arguments I am looking for a real answer for a Summer-1 paper assignment. Please be honest. 9 million Africans were enslaved by their fellow Africans from warring factions. Of that 9 million only 5% were sold to the Colonies(America). The majority of the slaves,91%,went to Brazil (Portuguese) and the Bahamas to work on sugar farms. Others went to Spain, The middle east and other South American countries. Only 2.7% of the Black people living in the US today are genetic decedents of Colonial slaves, not through later migration of peoples after freedom or escape from the bahamas. So why is it that over 90% of Black Americans believe they are the product of Slavery in this country? The reason I picked this topic out of the list was because my Great grand parents were poor Irish immigrants who were forced into the Army soon after arriving in this country. We had a debate in class about reparations and who should pay them and who should get them. Please comment on anything you wish, BUT- No Trolls! and no Racism.Monmi: I never said anything was a lie. I'm simply saying that what the majority of Black America thinks is incorrect. This is backed up by a Black corporation called African American Anthropology something... Anyway they are a corp in Britian so they do not have a one sidded veiw on history. I'm not trying to offend you but to say that all blacks are decendents of slavery is insane, That would be like saying the "White Devil" convinced the HUTU's to Commite genocide on the TUTSIS in Rwanda. more

The majority of Africans DID migrate here from South America when they were freed or escaped from Portugeese slavers. The reason is simple.... -Sugar plantation slaves lifespans were 3 years. -A freed black man or even a black slace in the Colonies was 35 years. AND slaves were both color up until the "Racist Consension" of the late 1780's when slavery was changed to Color and away from class standings.. One aristocratic black man could own one pesant slave easily in the early 1500's.1st time Momma: Thanks you for an good answer. I asked this question on 6 different areas and you gave an answer ( coming froma a black woman) that didn't have the word Honky or White boy in it. Thank you for being honest. But NOT all Africans were slaves. The Mali was one of the biggest goverments in Africa up until a century ago, the Zulus, The genocidal HUTU and many others were never slaves. more

In the earliest Colonies Blacks and whites intermarried and even had slaves of both colors. My numbers are acurate. I got them from the African American Anthropological Society. more

Resolved Question: Are We carribean Blacks of Black indian descent or African descent?

go to this source and read "What About the Black tribes": http://members.tripod.com/pointingbird/lostfeatherintl/id60.htm if the source does not work then here what it says: The Olmecs migrated into two directions. One group of Olmecs migrated to the Eastern islands near the Bermuda Triangle and settled in the islands of Jamaica, Haiti, Bahamas, Trinidad, and Barbados. The Olmecs set up colonies on the islands and became known as 'Arawak.' These were the people Christopher Columbus encountered. The Spaniards and British mixed in with the Arawaks. The Olmecs of Haiti went back to their African roots and began practicing their religion of Yoruba which was mistakenly called, "Voodoo." The Arawaks mixed in with the Portuguese and produced a tribe of half Negroid-half Latin called, 'Taino." The Taino were invaded by another tribe called 'Caribs' who were sadistic cannibals. The Caribs migrated to an island what is now known as 'Caribbean.' . So r we of olmec descent? more

Resolved Question: Whites in the 19th century Caribbean...?

Can you recommend any books or movies that take place during the early-mid 1800s Caribbean (whichever island...doesn't really matter but the English colonies would be best.) Around the Regency/Victorian era. I'm trying to write a story based on family history, about the relationship based on the relationship between a young descendant of Loyalists from South Carolina, and a young slave woman on a plantation in the Bahamas. I'm pretty good with the general history, but I'm stuck on little "details." Like fashion, for example. I know what types of clothing were in Fashion for whites in England and the US, but the climate is completely different in the Caribbean. Did white women still wear those corsets and heavy dresses in the Caribbean heat? Did rich people of the planter class send there children away to school in England? Did they generally have ties with the "old country", or was their life centered soley in the island? I know...weird question, but any help would be great. more

Resolved Question: English ancestry?

Just wondering.....my great-grandparents (my mother's mom's parents) are both full blooded English. My g-grandfather was from Bahamas which used to be a British colony, and my g-grandmother was born in FL but her parents were British. So that makes my grandmother (their daughter) full blooded English also - she was born in FL. So that makes my mother half English - she's born in FL (my grandfather had an Irish surname but he's also American)? And what does that make me? half English? A quarter English? My father's also an American (born in FL) but his surname is British. more
