Resolved Question: Ten items for this novel?

I'm doing a project on the novel A Salty Peice of Land by Jimmy Buffett, and I need ten items for a project that describe the novel, it's kinda hard :/ Here's a summary of the novel. A Salty Piece of Land brings back the character of Tully Mars from Jimmy Buffett's previous novel, Tales from Margaritaville. Tully is a Wyoming cowboy on the lam. The ranch where he lives and works has been converted to a poodle ranch run by a universally hated woman by the name of Thelma Barston. After Tully throws a massage table through her plate glass window, she uses her political connections to trump up charges and have a warrant issued for his arrest. Tully takes his faithful steed, Mr. Twain, and decides he wants to see the ocean. With bounty hunters on his trail, this begins a series of adventures for him that will take him to the Alabama coast, Key West, Mexico, Belize, Cuba, and the Bahamas. Tully is a kind soul, hard worker, and a quick learner. He befriends a shrimp boat captain named Captain Kirk who teaches him his first lessons about the ways of the sea and transports him and Mr. Twain to a remote part of the Yucatan peninsula called Punta Margarita. He also meets and begins a budding friendship with a musician/treasure hunter/pilot named Willie Singer. Tully lands a job as a fly-fishing guide at the Lost Boys fishing camp in Punta Margarita. It's run by a man named Bucky Norman who leases the land from the manager of a country western singer named Tex Sex. The other fly-fishing guide is a Mayan shaman, Ix-Nay. In the remote outpost of Punta Margarita, Tully feels like he can leave his past behind and try to figure out where his new life will lead him. On a trip to the Mayan ruins at Tulum, he's stranded when he totals a Jeep. While waking a from a ganja-induced dream on the beach there, he sees a beautiful schooner coming into the bay. Its captain is 101-year old Cleopatra Highbourne, and she's on a mission to find a fresnel lens for a lighthouse she wants to refurbish on the Bahamian island of Cayo Loco, the salty piece of land of the book's title. It's an endeavor that will eventually involve Tully and his friends, but first he must make a trip to Belize to find a Land Rover to replace the Jeep. A man on the run from the law with a fake passport and bounty hunters in pursuit must be careful. Which is how Tully ended up in the middle of a wild spring break party with a couple hot college girls. That's a quick outline to the plot, although the plot is not that important. It serves as the vehicle to further the adventures of Tully and his new-found friends. Some of the chapters in this novel are letters from Willie Singer as he searches for a fresnel lens while island hopping his way across the south Pacific in a seaplane. Each adventure is just plain fun as Tully finds out what's important to his life, and that answer is invariably a sense of ethics, a lot of fun, and good friends you can count on anytime. It helps that a lot of these friends are very wealthy and can come to the rescue at the drop of a hat. Tully continues to find like-minded people, often making instant connections as if they share the same karma. Karma and mysticism play a recurring role in A Salty Piece of Land, from his father's friend and Indian medicine man, Johnny Red Dust, to Ix-Nay the Mayan shaman, to an odd religion on a forgotten South Sea island. A Salty Piece of Land is a fun ride through Jimmy Buffett's idea of paradise, and you get the sense it's a place he's visited often. Many of his own loves, flying, sailing, and fishing, are featured prominently in the novel. It's a world where drink, ganja, and fun are pleasant additions if not done to excess. It's also a place where the dark forces of greed, corpocracy, and pollution threaten paradise. A disdain for tourists and resorts and an affection for indigenous people who've learned to live off the land runs strong through the novel. Even Cuban baseball, played for pride instead of greedy contracts, plays a role. This is not a literary novel and A Salty Piece of Land has no pretensions that it is. There will undoubtedly be those readers put off by its lack of any real drama or suspense. At times it's predictable, but it's a comforting predictability at that. You know the good guys will win, the friends will be there in the time of need, and all surprises will eventually be pleasant ones. That doesn't distract from the enjoyment of the novel, but adds to it instead. Jimmy Buffett's prose easily transports the reader to the different settings in his paradise. I don't fish, I've never sailed a schooner across the Caribbean, or flown a plane. By the end of this novel, I wanted to do all three. Therein lies the charm of this book: its easy access to warmth and beauty of many types teehee...anyways, i already have a Jimmy Buffett shirt because he wrote the novel and a poodle because Tully gets transferred to a poodle ranch, I'd LOVE some help! Thanks:) ~Miss more

MANILA - Armed men claiming to be members of a Muslim separatist group are negotiating their surrender after occupying an island in the western Philippines, military officials said Wednesday. Troops and navy boats were sent to Marabon, off Palawan, after about 30 gunmen claiming to be members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) seized the island on Saturday, a police report said. Some of Marabon's residents were held in a mosque after most fled the island and reported the incident to authorities, police said. Although the residents were later allowed to leave the mosque, the armed men had asked them not to leave the island. Navy boats were now circling Marabon while attempts were made to convince the gunmen to surrender without a fight, police said. "The armed men... are saying they are willing to surrender, so as of now, negotiations are being done by the members of the local government," said military spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner. It was unclear why the gunmen occupied the island. The military was also trying to confirm whether they were members of the MNLF, once the Philippines' largest Muslim separatist group. In the 1970s the MNLF waged a bloody guerrilla campaign for a Muslim state in the southern Philippines, but ceased hostilities in 1996. as of 08/18/2009 7:12 PM Printer-friendly version | Send to friend | Share your views Comments Login or register to post comments Login Create New Account | Login VideoTop VideoLatest Video Long Tail Latest VideoPinay theater thespian returns home Pinoys in Bahamas all-out support for RP's Miss Universe bet Quigaman supports Bianca Manalo’s Miss U bid Juday to help Shawie in 2010 campaign Reyes slams Recto in oil prices hearing Young voters ask: Will high-tech elections ensure clean polls? Resolved Question: What's wrong with me?

Well I guess the title can be a little bit misleading, but ever since I lived in Japan I changed. Now, I'm not saying that it was Japan that changed me but something turned over. I started viewing the world differently. Things that people believed, I thought of it from a different perspective and I started to see how ludicrous it was. Be it Religion, Laws, School, EVERYTHING. Let me give you some background first, Im considered a genius (yes, I know, everyone is now days) I was tested by a professor, at the request of my school and I rates 2 points over a genius. This may have, or not, contributed to my problem. Ok, back to the present. They way I see it, there is no such thing as countries, states, counties, etc. There is only animals and earth, nothing else. So I will start with laws. The way i see it, NO Human being has ANY right to say what another human can do. First, I know that Murder is probably the first thing that pops up in your head, however, if someone really wants to kill someone, they will do it anyways. People do not fear jail, that is painfully obvious. Onto drug laws, Yet again, I believe, no matter how bad a drug may be for someone, that no human has any right to say what another human may or may not consume. Its just not within their natural boundaries. If someone wants to do a drug, they will do it, regardless if it is 'illegal' or not. Its an uphill battle on a wet, slippery slope. Now, Education in messed up, it always has been. Ever since I got to high school, I lost complete interest in school. I stopped learning, reading out of a textbook is not learning, it is copying and reciting. Think parrot. Also, I strongly believe that it is impossible to decrease all facets of Intelligence down to a single letter, or a number. Its just Impossible. Example: according to my high school, I am Stupid. My GPA is around the 1 range. I have shot down all hopes to a college straight out of high school. But i guarantee that I am smarter than 95% of the people that have higher grades than me. I ace my tests, but do ZERO homework. This can easily be perceived as laziness, and perhaps it is, but I digress. I will skip religion because that debate has been beaten to death, and it gets nowhere. When I sit in a classroom and I look around, I am disgusted. I see animals, covered in makeup, with views embedded into their mind. Views on what is right, what is wrong, and everything in between. Example: It is commonly accepted that spiders are scary, while dogs are not. This is just because spiders are different and is something we cannot relate to, while dogs are something easy to attach to. Even tho dogs cause amount to exponentially more attacks than spiders. Anyways, I see everyone sitting in class and there is an accepted line. You cant cuss, Why? because that exact array of letters and vowels is considered vulgar. It seems like everything we do in life is trying to hide one fact, we are just animals. There is no love, only lust. We try to hide our desires and everything that drives us through clothes, makeup, actions, everything. Everything boils down to 2 things. Sex and survival. Another thing i have realized is that I have only one life on this earth and I do not wish to waste it working until I'm 60. I will consider my life complete when i have traveled this world. When I say travel I do not mean cruising to the Bahamas for some R&R on a beachfront resort. I want to walk, walk as far as I can, I want to see the world for what it is. You may say I need money for this, but the earth is more than capable of supporting a human who knows how to utilize it. I believe that modern life has dulled mans senses. We are a confused and lost species.I find it hard now to connect with people just because my views. I cannot connect with people because i do not buy into what they do. Now, it would be easy to chalk this up as teenage angst, but I am a very self aware person, I would know when i was just complaining and when I truly do not agree with what is going on around me. So I guess I don't really have a question, rather, I am asking for insight. To the person saying about seeing the decay. In a weird way that is what i enjoy. When i was in Japan, (not in mainland) I would walk around the backstreets and there would be sewage in the streets, the buildings are old and nasty, but yet, it was extremely peaceful and I loved it. Now, this could easily be different when I am in a third world slum, with disease and decay, but it would definitely be a wonderful experience whether, at the time, i enjoyed it or not. more

Resolved Question: Can you guys help me pick a religion?

I have a few religions vying for my attention. I've been visiting a few of them. One was the Adventists. They told me that they were the "true church" and the other big benefit was that I wouldn't go to hell if I joined. I think that's positive. The downsides are that I can't have alcohol, can't have premarital sex, and have to go to church on Saturday. I kinda like to have sex with my girlfriend and sometimes my wife on Saturday. In fact this one time we did it on a boat with the trees waving in the distance, there were crickets and strange birds chirping, and it was really beautiful. I felt at one with the universe and then I put in her butt, not my wife's, she doesn't like that. So anyway I won't be able to have sex with my girlfriend anymore, just my wife, but I can't do her on Saturday I guess. The other religion is the Mormons. They're pretty cool but they want me to go on a mission for two years. I think that sounds pretty cool but I don't know if I want to spend 2 years with a dude. I mean if they let me do it with a chick, I guess I'd go. I'll talk to them and see. I can see myself in a far off location with a hot honey, I'll even go with my wife if they really want me to. I can see us converting people to the true faith by day and having wild, passionate but godly sex at night. That sort of mission would be more enjoyable. I think my wife would like to go somewhere tropical so I'll ask them if I can go to Fiji or maybe the Bahamas. God save me if I go to like Moldova or Canada. Anyway I'm leaning towards the Mormons at the moment but really need to know if I can have sex on my mission first. Baptists don't like my drinking but I can just go through a drive-thru liquor store so they can't see me. So I had it all narrowed down and then these Jehovah Witnesses came to my house at 7 in the goddamn morning. It was a man and a woman so I think they got one up on the Mormons there. They told me that blood transfusions are no nos, Jesus is just an angel, and that that 70 Church elders will rule the earth. I think it would be cool to rule the earth, I'd have to become one of the elders though. I think I could do it, I'm a pretty popular guy, I was voted most popular in my high school and a lot of chicks wanted to bone me in college and still do. I do pretty well at clubs. I get at least 3 or 4 phone numbers a night and I think those social skills could transfer over into becoming a good elder. My male friends like me and I got elected head of my apartment community activity board also. I'll apply for this job and if I get it, I'll definitely join this church and even say that it's the true religion if they want me to. Oh yeah! They said NOTHING about drinking and premarital sex so I think they're in the lead at least for now. So if you guys could help me I'd appreciate it. Which of these religions is best? Are there some I haven't heard about that have good things to them? I'd really like one without so many rules but also want the right one so I don't go to hell or anything. If I get the right one then that'll erase all the bad stuff I've done too. Any suggestions will be helpful. more

Tell me something about your country that is not commonly known among other nations, like some ethnic food, customs, rituals, domestic literature, preferences, religion, mythology etc. I asked this question a couple of weeks ago but only got 2 answers. Resolved Question: Ancient Gaels believed on October 31, known as Halloween, the boundary between the living and dead dissolved?

You are kindly invited to share your opinion(s) on Holloween..... I myself am 100% Irish and look forward to all your answers+ Thank you. Halloween From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia jack-o'-lantern Also called All Hallows Eve All Saints' Eve Samhain Hallowed End Observed by Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Japan, Bahamas, United States, sometimes Australia,Sweden, and many Latin American countries where it is known as Noche de las Brujas (Night of the Witches)[2] Type Religious, cultural (celebrated mostly irrespective of religion) Significance There are many sources of Halloween's significance Date October 31 Celebrations Trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bobbing for apples, costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, bonfires, and fireworks (in Ireland) Look up Halloween in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.Halloween, or Hallowe’en, is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses", carving Jack-o'-lanterns, reading scary stories and watching horror movies. Irish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century. Halloween is celebrated in several countries of the Western world, most commonly in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Japan, New Zealand, and occasionally in parts of Australia. In Sweden the All Saints' official holiday takes place on the first Saturday of November. History Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (Irish pronunciation: [ˈsˠaunʲ]; from the Old Irish samain).[1] The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, and is sometimes [2] regarded as the "Celtic New Year".[3] Traditionally, the festival was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, now known as Halloween, the boundary between the alive and the deceased dissolved, and the dead become dangerous for the living by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals would frequently involve bonfires, into which bones of slaughtered livestock were thrown. Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or placate them.[4][5] History of name The term Halloween is shortened from All Hallows' Even (both "even" and "eve" are abbreviations of "evening", but "Halloween" gets its "n" from "even") as it is the eve of "All Hallows' Day",[6] which is now also known as All Saints' Day. It was a day of religious festivities in various northern European Pagan traditions,[3] until Popes Gregory III and Gregory IV moved the old Christian feast of All Saints' Day from May 13 (which had itself been the date of a pagan holiday, the Feast of the Lemures) to November 1. In the ninth century, the Church measured the day as starting at sunset, in accordance with the Florentine calendar. Although All Saints' Day is now considered to occur one day after Halloween, the two holidays were, at that time, celebrated on the same day. Liturgically, the Church traditionally celebrated that day as the Vigil of All Saints, and, until 1970, a day of fasting as well. Like other vigils, it was celebrated on the previous day if it fell on a Sunday, although secular celebrations of the holiday remained on the 31st. The Vigil was suppressed in 1955, but was later restored in the post-Vatican II calendar.  more

Resolved Question: Are We carribean Blacks of Black indian descent or African descent?

go to this source and read "What About the Black tribes": http://members.tripod.com/pointingbird/lostfeatherintl/id60.htm if the source does not work then here what it says: The Olmecs migrated into two directions. One group of Olmecs migrated to the Eastern islands near the Bermuda Triangle and settled in the islands of Jamaica, Haiti, Bahamas, Trinidad, and Barbados. The Olmecs set up colonies on the islands and became known as 'Arawak.' These were the people Christopher Columbus encountered. The Spaniards and British mixed in with the Arawaks. The Olmecs of Haiti went back to their African roots and began practicing their religion of Yoruba which was mistakenly called, "Voodoo." The Arawaks mixed in with the Portuguese and produced a tribe of half Negroid-half Latin called, 'Taino." The Taino were invaded by another tribe called 'Caribs' who were sadistic cannibals. The Caribs migrated to an island what is now known as 'Caribbean.' . So r we of olmec descent? more

Roberts and his father will remain "spiritual regents," who cannot vote on university matters. Richard Roberts' wife, Lindsay Roberts, stepped down as a regent about a month ago, Pearsons said. The younger Roberts and the evangelical university have come under fire since three former professors sued last month, alleging wrongful termination. Resolved Question: In the Bahamas, are people generally friendly towards animals?

Cause where I live now, they harm a certain type of animal often by kicking them or running over them with cars, because of their religion. A while back there were these construction workers around our area, and we went for walks with my pets who'd make sounds at them, but never go near them or harm them. But one time, they always go into the bushes, and I didn't see Sally anymore. I called for her several times, and she finally came out ,with a rope tied around her neck, thightly! I went up to see if there was anyone there, but noone. Now, I'm scared everytime I go out with them, and don't want to move to a country who does this to animals. I'd like to move somewhere with an island-environment when I finish and retire,(I'm only 18 though), and thinking of the Bahamas, but don't want to have the same experience, especially if I want to work as a Vet. more

Resolved Question: How can my own country be an independent American state?

Greetings! I am from the Bahamas and I know in my own heart that my country belongs to the United States, yet some American resources instate my country to be under your domain? (i.e. of the British Commonwealth)? Why, even some users of Yahoo! insisted my country is of your kin. I am a Unitarian and my religion originated in England itself. Please help me, for my religion, for my country, and for the United States. I am also an American, and since I honor the Founding Fathers, I do not wish to risk treason. I also do not wish for the British Commonwealth to be disenfranchised beause of it. I appreciate your efforts into resolving this matter. Is this a matter of an American who insists he is native the Bahamas or is this a matter of fantasy regarding the United States. If an American insists I am obsessed with the Bahamas, I would respond, "To the contrary, my dear. I am obsessed with the United States." Please help me answer the question, for the British Crown is at stake. more

Resolved Question: How can the Bahamas be American? The text says "British"!?

In my heart, I know I am from the Bahamas, and I know it is American, but when I read any passage from a geography book fr an encyclopedai, my eyes are on fire since the text says, "Ha! Ha! The Bahamas are British, rebel boy!" I am also an American, but I do not wish to be charged with treason because I have intimate knowledge of the Bahamas. I am willing to follow the law, but I feel perplexed when the phrase "part of the Commonwelath" includes the Bahamas. iam not British and I know the Bahamas has nothing to do with England, but what am I compared with an encyclopedia. Many persons contribute to an encyclopedia and the persons who contributed the info of the Bahamas state the country to be part of the British Commonwealth. I do not mind any overlays since my religion was founded in England. Please help me before my goose is cooked. (No, I am not a memeber of the Anglican Church. I am a Unitarian.) more
