The Bahamas Animals Questions asked

Resolved Question: Where should I go diving? The galapagos or Australia? Or anywhere else in the World?

I am planning a trip for the end of march/april. I am planning to leave the second to last week of march and travel until April 5th. I would like to go to the best dive destination possible in the world. I have researched, and have found a few options; Australia(great barrier reef and ningaloo reef), Galapagos and the Maldives are all excellent destinations. There is only one place I do not want to travel and that is to the Red Sea. I have already been to Hawaii and the Caribbean and the Bahamas. However, I have not been to Cocos Island yet. The major things I want to see are LARGE pelagics such as WHALE SHARKS, whales or dolphins. Sharks are also good too. Just a wide variety of large marine life. I know that the galapagos is good for large animals, however, I am not sure about the time of year. The Maldives sound amazing. I was checking out the Four Seasons Explorer and that looks very nice. In Australia I would like to travel to Ningaloo Reef and The Great Barrier Reef. I heard you can see whale sharks in this time in Ningaloo reef. Please tell me your personal opinion, of your experiences diving, dive level and where you have been diving in the world. I need to make up my decision soon. Let me know if you have any suggestions for Liveaboard cruises or great resorts. One of my top things I want to see is a whale shark. Please respond! I am having a hard time making my mind up. more

Voting Question: Help! Latin America Homework!!?

Help? try to guess the country! 1. In July I boarded a cruise ship at Panama City. We traveled west through the can. Then we sailed to the southwest more than 1,000 miles. We arrived at a small, isolated group of islands. We spent days exploring __________, where plants and animals are found that live nowhere else in the world. 2. After leaving the islands, our ship sailed due east until it reached Ecuador on the coast of South America. The ship turned south and followed the coast. The _____________ tower over the landscape in the distance. Many of them are still snow capped. 3. Our ship continues to head south. After entering Chile, the coastline appears to be desert. We are passing by the _____________. It is one of the driest places on earth. 4.As the ship continues south, the weather becomes cooler and cooler. Large blocks of ice can be seen floating in the distance. Finally, at the very tip of South America, the ship turns north. The ship just passed _________. 5. Our ship continues north of several days. The land to the west is low and grassy. No high mountains are in view. Finally, the ship pulls into port in the beautiful city of ________ on the La Plata River. Just a few miles to the west lies another city, Montevideo. I'm guessing number one is the Bahamas. number two is Andes mountains. idk number three....#4 is chile #5 is buenos aires... am i correct? can you try to answer the questions??? more

Resolved Question: Where to go on a honeymoon?

My fiance and I are trying to plan our honeymoon and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed! I've already done my research and read up on the Bahamas, Jamaica, Punta Cana, Cancun, etc etc.... I know the places, but... how do you pick! Carribbean or Mexico? Punta Cana or Jamaica? Argh! We have never traveled before so this is all new to us. We just want to go away and relax in the sun and sand, have a couple of drinks and just have a great time! We aren't big party animals, and we aren't really into the nude beaches they have in some areas. Also, I think would be kind of freaked out by the pestering of some of the locals, are there certain places that have less of that? We do like the idea of an all inclusive, but is there anywhere honeymoon-ish in the US - other than Hawaii? We just can't afford that right now. Our budget is no more than about $2500. Be my travel agent! more

Resolved Question: Is it fairly cheap to island hop in the Bahamas and surrounding areas?

I'm not sure how far apart the different islands are, but I really do not want to be stuck on just one island. I already do not know what island I want to stay on when we get down there. So is it possible to not be stuck on just one island? Any recommendations? I'm so confused LOL, I just don't want to vacation on an island and not like it and nothing that I would want to do. I want to see waterfalls/nature, animals, maybe snorkel, definitely swim with dolphins. I do not care about the club scene, drinking, gambling. I just want to make the most out of every second. :) more

Resolved Question: What's wrong with me?

Well I guess the title can be a little bit misleading, but ever since I lived in Japan I changed. Now, I'm not saying that it was Japan that changed me but something turned over. I started viewing the world differently. Things that people believed, I thought of it from a different perspective and I started to see how ludicrous it was. Be it Religion, Laws, School, EVERYTHING. Let me give you some background first, Im considered a genius (yes, I know, everyone is now days) I was tested by a professor, at the request of my school and I rates 2 points over a genius. This may have, or not, contributed to my problem. Ok, back to the present. They way I see it, there is no such thing as countries, states, counties, etc. There is only animals and earth, nothing else. So I will start with laws. The way i see it, NO Human being has ANY right to say what another human can do. First, I know that Murder is probably the first thing that pops up in your head, however, if someone really wants to kill someone, they will do it anyways. People do not fear jail, that is painfully obvious. Onto drug laws, Yet again, I believe, no matter how bad a drug may be for someone, that no human has any right to say what another human may or may not consume. Its just not within their natural boundaries. If someone wants to do a drug, they will do it, regardless if it is 'illegal' or not. Its an uphill battle on a wet, slippery slope. Now, Education in messed up, it always has been. Ever since I got to high school, I lost complete interest in school. I stopped learning, reading out of a textbook is not learning, it is copying and reciting. Think parrot. Also, I strongly believe that it is impossible to decrease all facets of Intelligence down to a single letter, or a number. Its just Impossible. Example: according to my high school, I am Stupid. My GPA is around the 1 range. I have shot down all hopes to a college straight out of high school. But i guarantee that I am smarter than 95% of the people that have higher grades than me. I ace my tests, but do ZERO homework. This can easily be perceived as laziness, and perhaps it is, but I digress. I will skip religion because that debate has been beaten to death, and it gets nowhere. When I sit in a classroom and I look around, I am disgusted. I see animals, covered in makeup, with views embedded into their mind. Views on what is right, what is wrong, and everything in between. Example: It is commonly accepted that spiders are scary, while dogs are not. This is just because spiders are different and is something we cannot relate to, while dogs are something easy to attach to. Even tho dogs cause amount to exponentially more attacks than spiders. Anyways, I see everyone sitting in class and there is an accepted line. You cant cuss, Why? because that exact array of letters and vowels is considered vulgar. It seems like everything we do in life is trying to hide one fact, we are just animals. There is no love, only lust. We try to hide our desires and everything that drives us through clothes, makeup, actions, everything. Everything boils down to 2 things. Sex and survival. Another thing i have realized is that I have only one life on this earth and I do not wish to waste it working until I'm 60. I will consider my life complete when i have traveled this world. When I say travel I do not mean cruising to the Bahamas for some R&R on a beachfront resort. I want to walk, walk as far as I can, I want to see the world for what it is. You may say I need money for this, but the earth is more than capable of supporting a human who knows how to utilize it. I believe that modern life has dulled mans senses. We are a confused and lost species.I find it hard now to connect with people just because my views. I cannot connect with people because i do not buy into what they do. Now, it would be easy to chalk this up as teenage angst, but I am a very self aware person, I would know when i was just complaining and when I truly do not agree with what is going on around me. So I guess I don't really have a question, rather, I am asking for insight. To the person saying about seeing the decay. In a weird way that is what i enjoy. When i was in Japan, (not in mainland) I would walk around the backstreets and there would be sewage in the streets, the buildings are old and nasty, but yet, it was extremely peaceful and I loved it. Now, this could easily be different when I am in a third world slum, with disease and decay, but it would definitely be a wonderful experience whether, at the time, i enjoyed it or not. more

Resolved Question: My essay on the environmental impacts of tourism in the Caribbean :D?

I study Tourism in school :) Tell me what you think :) I need to tweek __________________________________________________________ Tourism in the Caribbean has grown rapidly since 1978, when families from all over the world enjoy traveling to the beautiful, tranquil Caribbean islands for a warm, fun holiday. Many Caribbean islands experienced a boom in tourism ‘by accident’ meaning that many Caribbean countries were not prepared for a rapid increase in food, water, electricity and land consumption. Tourism in the Caribbean had began to damage local ecosystems, the increased demand for electricity, seafood and water had caused prices for these resources to reach record high levels of price. The countries of Antigua, St. Kitts, Barbuda, St. Nevis and Barbados have been listed as “water scarce” due to the large consumptions due mainly to tourist resorts, which use approximately five to ten times more water than the Caribbean’s residential areas. Tourism has also caused a large increase in pollution, hotels in Jamaica and The Bahamas have recently been fined by Uebersax due to producing ‘high fecal pollution’ and now, as a result of this, the countries are being encouraged to discourage tourism for a short while until pollution levels decrease. ‘Power tourism’ in the Caribbean has caused hotel groups to have a higher authority than councils and environmental organizations in some Caribbean countries. For example, Urban Development Corporation wished to build a new 500 rooms complex in Negril, Jamaica, and although several organizations including the local Chamber of Commerce and the Negril Coral Reef Preservation Society wished to delay the construction; until the local sewage plant was upgraded, and the marine area was protected and given park status, work went ahead promptly ignoring these organizations concerns. Caribbean countries are now finding ways to help preserve there environments. Barbados now has began using a ‘reverse osmosis’ technique which produces freshwater from seawater which ultimately should drop the demand on wells and natural coral freshwater resources. Other countries are now using solar, wind, and biomass energy to reduce their there levels of imported oils from abroad ‘Caribbean Action For Sustainable Tourism’ has created a plan of action for the tourism industry which contains ten important areas, waste minimization, energy efficiency, conservation and management, management of fresh water resources, waste water management, hazardous substances transport, land-use planning and management, design for sustainable tourism. It is the organizations hope that this plan will be applied to all resorts in the Caribbean and will help preserve the delicate ecosystem that has been destroyed by tourists. Tourism in the Caribbean has also affected, and destroyed wildlife. Mainly due to new creatures being introduced to the countries and competing for food and habitat. Jamaica has the largest number of endangered animals in the Caribbean at 254, in 1872 Indian mongoose where imported to Jamaica to help control the number of rats in local sugarcane fields, the mongoose is now accountable for the extinction of five species. Soon after the mongoose’s arrival to Jamaica, it spread to other Caribbean islands and has also affected and endangered the wildlife in these countries. A major part of the Caribbean tourism industry is through cruise ships. Cruise ships leave large amounts of pollution in the Caribbean ecosystem every year, ships also dump large amounts a waste, sometimes illegally, into the Caribbean Sea to which has damaging effects to coral reefs and marine wildlife. The Caribbean had made several lawsuits towards cruise lines for ‘illegal, environmentally unsafe actions’, for example, Princess Cruises was fined millions of dollars in the 1990’s when passengers videotaped ‘plastic garbage bags being dumped into the sea’ and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines was fined $27 million when a Coast Guard took videotapes of oil pouring out of a Sovereign of the Seas ship in Puerto Rico. Cruise ship pollution is now currently being monitored and regulated by the MARPOL to ensure all waste is disposed of properly; thereby protecting the local environment. more

Resolved Question: What would be a good conclusion for my essay? (its about Cuban tree frogs)?

The Invasion Of The Cuban Tree Frogs Some animals do not belong in Florida. Such as the Cuban tree frog. An invasive amphibian that damages the finely balanced ecosystem of Florida. These frogs found there way into Florida either by someone letting them lose into the environment or by various means of importation from the ships that travel to and from the Islands of Cuba, Caymans, or Bahamas. They invade our homes and buildings, they eat our native frogs, and they have over populated Florida. The first major issue is that Cuban tree frogs invade our homes and buildings. As they feed, they defecate on the windows and walls and their fecal deposits can become unsightly over time, especially if there are a lot of frogs in the area. Furthermore, when a person enters or exits his or her home at night, Cuban Tree frogs that are waiting for an insect meal may be startled and as a result will occasionally jump onto people or into their homes through open doors. This can be a scary experience for a person who is afraid of frogs. Florida's native tree frogs rarely enter homes and buildings and do not cause a problem. Their calls may be annoying to people that live near breeding sites, especially following heavy rains. This creates a situation in which these frogs can become a real nuisance for people. The second problem caused by the Cuban tree frogs is they eat Florida’s native frogs. The cuban tree frog has a predatory nature. They devour anything including our precious native frogs. Soon this population of tree frogs will slowly disappear, which will permanently disrupt our delicate ecosystem. With our frogs gone, other species might be at risk too. The last issue of the Cuban tree frog is the over population of Florida. They have spread from as south as the Keys to as far north as Jacksonville. The reason being is they are very prolific animals. A very large female may lay in excess of 15,000 eggs in one season. Unfortunately these frogs are not picky about where they breed. They can breed just about anywhere, and that is what makes them a threat. Because of the combination of abundant places to hide, consistent food sources, and adequate breeding sites provided by human dominated landscapes, Cuban Tree frog populations are become quite dense. In conclusion, these frogs invade buildings, eat our frogs, and they are over populating Florida. more

Resolved Question: why do most Americans?

Okay I am a international student here from Nassau Bahamas and i have been living here in the states for the last three and a half years.I find that most American people see people from the Caribbean as caged animals that don't know anything about western living. when i first got here i was faced with questions like do they have cars there? why do people drive? and stereotypical jamaican accents as sarcasm? why do most Americans think that people from the Caribbean all live in poverty?. I mean most of the people I go to school with don't believe that in like every country were there is a economy there are different social classes and different standards of living. I mean I feel like most American people get this distorted view of the outside world from watching that dreadfull box call a TV. can someone fill me in maybe my opinion could be dead wrong. Thanks in advance more

Resolved Question: A Marine life question what species is this?

Sorry i have no pics but if i did i wouldn't be asking you this. i was swimming in the bahamas cable beach during early June this year, and in the middle of the sand no rocks at all nearby as i was snorkeling i found a weird object it was yellow and soft and squishy. I got a stick and put it under the animal and brought to the air then it fell back in the water when i looked under water it gave out this weird purple fluid but it wasn't big so it wasn't ink it was venom i think. but this animal is as big as your hand as tall as your hand sideways. from the bottom-up it was like a bag of water inflated and squishy. From the top-bottom it had folds on its top like a clam's cusps. What animal is this?!?!? I can't find it it's been months i've been searching for it >:( anywy help me plzz 0:) more

Resolved Question: Magic Box instead of Intelligent Design?

Single-celled giant upends early evolution G. sphaerica's traces are spitting image of the old, Precambrian fossils By Michael Reilly Discovery Channel updated 1:23 p.m. PT, Thurs., Nov. 20, 2008 Slowly rolling across the ocean floor, a humble single-celled creature is poised to revolutionize our understanding of how complex life evolved on Earth. A distant relative of microscopic amoebas, the grape-sized Gromia sphaerica was discovered once before, lying motionless at the bottom of the Arabian Sea. But when Mikhail Matz of the University of Texas at Austin and a group of researchers stumbled across a group of G. sphaerica off the coast of the Bahamas, the creatures were leaving trails behind them up to 20 inches long in the mud. The trouble is, single-celled critters aren't supposed to be able to leave trails. The oldest fossils of animal trails, called 'trace fossils', date to around 580 million years ago, and paleontologists always figured they must have been made by multicellular animals with complex, symmetrical bodies. But G. sphaerica's traces are the spitting image of the old, Precambrian fossils; two small ridges line the outside of the trail, and one thin bump runs down the middle. At up to 1.2 inches in diameter, they're also enormous compared to most of their microscopic cousins. "If these guys were alive 600 million years ago, and their traces got fossilized, a paleontologist who had never seen this thing would not have a shade of doubt attributing this kind of trace to the activity of a big, multicellular, bilaterally symmetrical animal," Matz said. "This is a very important discovery," Shuhai Xiao of Virginia Polytechnic Institute said. "The fact that protists can make traces has important implications for how we interpret many trace fossils." The finding could overturn conventional thinking on a mysterious time in the evolution of early life known as the Cambrian Explosion. Until about 550 million years ago, there were very few animals leaving trails behind. Then, within 10 million years an unprecedented blossoming of life swarmed across the planet, filling every niche with hard-bodied, complex creatures. "IT WASN’T A GRADUAL DEVELOPMENT OF COMPLEXITY," Matz said. "NSTEAD THESE THINGS SUDDENLY SEEMED TO BURST OUT OF A MAGIC BOX." Charles Darwin first noticed the Cambrian Explosion and thought it was an artifact of a poorly preserved fossil record. The precambrian trace fossils were left by multicellular animals, he reasoned, so there must be some gap in fossils between the nearly empty Precambrian and the teeming world that quickly followed. BUT, IF THE FIRST TRACES WERE INSTEAD MADE BY G. SPHAERICA, IT WOULD MEAN THE EXPLOSION WAS REAL; IT MUST HAVE BEEN A DIVERSIFICATION OF LIFE ON A SCALE NEVER BEFORE SEEN. GENETIC ANALYSIS OF THE WATER-FILLED G. SPHAERICA CELLS ALSO REVEALS TANTALIZING CLUES THAT IT COULD BE THE LODES LIVING FOSSIL ON THE PLANET. "There's a 1.8 billion-year-old fossil in the Stirling formation in Australia that looks just like one of their traces, and with a discoidal body impression similar to these guys." Matz said. "We haven't proved anything, but we might be looking at the ultimate living macroscopic fossil." © 2008 Discovery Channel URL: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27827279/  more

Discuss the cause and effects of global warming on the Bahamas then offer viable solutions Global warming, what does it mean? Global warming is often referred to as "the greenhouse effect". Both imply the absorption of energy radiated from earth's surface by carbon dioxide and other gasses in the atmosphere. Global warming threatens the whole world. Though it has had little noticeable impact on the world so far, its potential impact could be disastrous which is why global warming has become an issue ever present in the media and for governments. There are many causes such as greenhouse effect through the burning of fossil fuels, the rise in sea level, and pollution. You have heard that for every cause, there is an effect; well, the effects for us are. Agricultural practices, climate change, and the economic consequences and the solutions are renewable energy the Bahamas need to announce target for reduction for emission There are many causes of the greenhouse effect. The most common greenhouse gas is Carbon dioxide. The Bahamas depend solely they are released by the burning of fossil fuels; which is a major leading cause of concern for the Bahamas. These emissions can be seen when you start your car on a cold early morning and the muffler smokes. Also, the more cars sit for a long period of time on the road the more CO2 is admitted into the air. It can be seen in the form of smoke in the heavily populated cities like New Providence and Grand Bahama. Many things contribute to global warming. Such things are industries, transportation, electricity used, waste produced, and agriculture. The greenhouse is very vital to our being. Without the greenhouse effect, the earth would not be warm enough for the human race to live. But if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could make the earth warmer than usual. Even a little extra warming may cause problems for humans, plants, and animals to carry on everyday life. Another cause for global warming is the rise in see level; most of our islands is in 5ft of mean sea level. The Bahamas being a low-line area; it is likely that the fresh water ponds will be severally affect in some islands of the Bahamas. There are many well fields in some of the islands of the Bahamas, which will become contaminated due to the rise in sea level; this spells disaster for those islands whose water is pumped from well fields meanly Andros and Grand Bahama. Paragraph 6 of Climate Change in the Caribbean by Larry smith states that, “Indications are that some fresh water marshes in the Bahamas have already become brackish, which may be attributed to rising sea levels. And it is known that well fields on Andros and Grand Bahama have been badly affected by storm surge in the past five years. Scientist are fervently trying to find ways to counter act the effects that the rising waters are causing, which includes island and beach erosion. Evidence of the public’s ignorance of the inevitable impact of Sea Level Rising is shown in the millions of people that are flocking to the coast. Rising sea levels, winds, and currents are constantly eroding beaches, and in fact whole islands are disappearing. First, air pollution causes a great deal of health problems. Wanting clean air is a good reason because air that is polluted can damage human health. Indeed, the air pollution causes numerous diseases and increase health problems like the asthma or breathing problems; thus this is a real concern! Some persons cannot live in a big city because of the high rate of air pollution in it. However, our health is not the only to be threatened, our environment is threatened too. Indeed, the air pollution causes some disorders on the environment. Bahamians have another source of pollution; Cruise ships in the Bahamas produce enormous quantities of unwanted gases and fumes. This makes it a major contributor of pollution in the islands. For instance, a cruise ship that calls upon the Bahamas spent one day in Nassau harbour or a few days at other developed islands. “Most cruise ship uses about 300 tonnes of fuel per day at sea, and significant amounts while in harbour”. {English 119 booklet Paragraph. 7} The Bahamas is a very low- line country; the highest point being 206 ft above sea level; thus, this make this makes the Bahamas vulnerable to the effect of climate change and higher temperatures and even an increase flooding due to heavier rains; this will result in more malaria, dengue and other tropical diseases. As former Best Commission advisor John Hammerton said recently, Given that most of the Bahamas is a low-line coastal zone subject to storm surge and sea level rise, we should be anticipating the possible impacts of climate change and developing strategies to protect our habitats and landscapes based on the predications.” Climate change could also have a serve effect on natural disasters. Sea Turtles' Mystery Hideout Revealed Jeanna Bryner LiveScience Staff Writer LiveScience.com Wed Sep 19, 12:25 AM ET Once sea-turtle hatchlings hit the surf, they vanish for up to five years. Where the half-dollar-size tots spend these "lost years" while ballooning to the size of dinner plates has been a mystery, until now. ADVERTISEMENT New research, published today in the online edition of the journal Biology Letters, indicates the green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) hide out in the open ocean, where they feast on jellyfish and other marine creatures. Not only did the researchers spot their short-lived sea homes, but they discovered that these reptiles, thought to be lifelong vegetarians, are actually meat eaters as juveniles. The results help to solve a 50-year-old mystery about the hideouts. “This has been a really intriguing and embarrassing problem for sea-turtle biologists, because so many green-turtle hatchlings enter the ocean, and we haven’t known where they go,” said study team member Karen Bjorndal, a zoologist and director of the University of Florida's Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research. Before this study, scientists had two "snapshots" that provided scant clues about the missing information on the lives of green turtles: When they hatch, the 2-inch-long (5-centimeters) sea turtles push through seemingly colossal surf. Then, between three and five years later, the now juveniles reappear closer to shore. "Literally, when green turtles run off their nesting beach and into the ocean as little hatchlings, they disappear. And nobody sees them again [for years]," Bjorndal told LiveScience. The scientists collected samples from the shells of 44 green sea turtles at a site near Great Inagua in the Bahamas. They analyzed heavy and light stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen from both the oldest (earliest-grown) and newest sections of the shells. The isotopes act as fingerprints for an animal's diet (carnivore or herbivore) and where in the ocean the animal lived. The results indicated the green sea turtles spent their lost years in the deep ocean, feeding as carnivores, before moving closer to shore and switching to a vegetarian diet of sea grasses. The findings have implications for conservation of the green turtles, because as Bjorndal explained, "you can't protect a species if you don’t know where it is." more

A while back there were these construction workers around our area, and we went for walks with my pets who'd make sounds at them, but never go near them or harm them. But one time, they always go into the bushes, and I didn't see Sally anymore. I called for her several times, and she finally came out ,with a rope tied around her neck, thightly! I went up to see if there was anyone there, but noone. Now, I'm scared everytime I go out with them, and don't want to move to a country who does this to animals. I'd like to move somewhere with an island-environment when I finish and retire,(I'm only 18 though), and thinking of the Bahamas, but don't want to have the same experience, especially if I want to work as a Vet. more

Resolved Question: I have 2 boxers both from abused homesthey are great?

Here is the question I got 1 at 4 months he was starving and I feed him and he has been with me almost everywhere the last 3 months. He plays who kuds and dogs and adults and is well socialized. Now to my second dog he was also starved when I got him. I found out later his owners went on a honeymoon for 9 days to the bahamas. I was told they hired someone to come feed their dog but apparently they did not do it for what ever reason. He was in a wooden crate and likely broke out on the 3rd or 4th day and roamed the house untended for 5 or 6 days. Now I notice in play except with other boxers his hair raises up on his back. I am good with animals but realize it only takes 1 incident to ruin one animal. What is the best way for me to retrain or socialize this dog. He is also 7 months old and I think out of the same litter of 5 pubs that my original dog came from. As an aside why do people buy dogs and then not feed them? Any help would be good here these dogsrfamily more

Resolved Question: is this a good report?

i have a report on hurricane floyd that is due on wednsday there has got to be some teachers on this site: you can put it on microsoft word to see it better Hurricane Floyd ‘What is a hurricane?’ you might ask yourself. A hurricane is a violent storm of the Western North Atlantic and has wind speeds of up to 72 miles per hour. They form when the temperature is at least 26 degrees, as it slowly gets taller it releases latent heat which is a source of energy for a cyclone, there needs to be a lot of moisture in the air, there needs to be a low wind shear because if it had high wind shear the hurricane would break apart and it has to be 500 km away from the equator. The dangers a hurricane poses to human society is that causes a large amount of death, loss of housing, little to eat and billions of dollars in property damages. The people who issue warnings and watches are weathermen who tell us if the hurricane is mild or if its extremely bad you have to take shelter immediately. Have you ever wondered what categories they place hurricanes and what they call the scale that classifies the devastation of a hurricane? The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane scale classifies the most Western Hemisphere cyclones that range from either “tropical depression” to “tropical storms” wich eventually become hurricanes. Category 1 doesn’t really do much damage to houses and buildings but will do some damage to mobile homes and trees and some flooding. Category 2 would do some damages to houses, the flooding will damage some piers and the boats who aren’t well anchored be damaged. Category 3 there will be minor damage to some houses and buildings, any mobile homes will be completely destroyed, and the flooding would destroy smaller structure but will damage higher structures. Category 4 would destroy the roofs of houses, large erosion areas by the beach. Category 5 is the most devastating hurricane of them all. Houses would be destroyed, building structures would be either blown away or damaged, the flooding would cause extreme damage to all lower floors that are near the shoreline, and people would need to evacuate as soon as possible. Hurricane Floyd was a very strong category 4 and almost had a category 5 rating and was the largest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded. Hurricane Floyd was formed off the coast of Africa and lasted from September 7th to September 19th and became a category 4 hurricane and almost became a category 5. It struck the Bahamas and caused heavy damage. It went to the East Coast of the U.S which enormous evacuations. Floyd was responsible for 57 deaths and $4.5 billion in damages and this was in North Carolina. While Floyd was crossing the Bahamas it was almost becoming a category 5 for 12 hours and was weakened to a category 3 and was soon had enough strength to become a category 4. As it went through Florida it slowly started to weaken because of all the dry air. As Floyd accelerated to the north it weakened so much that Floyd became a category 2 on September 16. As of the 17th the storm continued to the northeast and later disappeared in Newfoundland After the devastation of hurricane Floyd came a lot of criticism saying that there was a very slow response. The runoff from the hurricane made problems for North Carolina’s rivers. One major concern was with all the freshwater in the ocean that people were afraid that fish and shrimp would die off killing the fishing and shrimp industries. Amazingly however, both industries were thriving because many marine animals moved to saltier waters so could become less vulnerable to Floyd’s effects. Pollution was also a scare because there were a ton of pesticides in river waters but unlike hurricane Fran the pesticides were lower because Floyd had more rain, which diluted the pesticides making them weaker. Child abuse was also a problem near the hardest hit areas in North Carolina which was probably caused by the aftermath of Floyd which caused parental stress because of all their losses and rebuilding. The East Coast, Florida and Massachusetts were under a hurricane warning at one point. Even with those specific areas that were mentioned only half actually were hit by hurricane like winds. Hurricane trackers were afraid that Florida was going to be the worse hit with a category 4 hurricane. Because of the warning one million Florida residents were told to evacuate. As the storm went north more people evacuated and caused the largest peacetime evacuations ever in the U.S with 2.6 million evacuating Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas alone. Hurricane Floyd was the deadliest U.S hurricane since hurricane Agnes. 57 people died and cost 4.5 billion dollars. In the Bahamas 1 person died, in North Carolina 35 people died, in Virginia 3 people died, in Delaware 2 people died, in Pennsylvania 6 people died, in New Jersey 6 people died. In New York 2 people died, in Connecticut I person died and in Vermont one person died as well. In the Bahamas the hurricane knocked out power and communication lines. Abaco Island, Cat Island, San Salvador Island, and Eleuthera Island was where the most damage had occurred where Floyd had uprooted trees and destroyed houses, restaurants, hotels and shops. Despite all the damage Bahamian citizens felt really lucky because only one person died and only a small number of injuries had occurred. North Carolina received most of the storms impact and had 35 deaths and caused billions in damage. Floyd also created some tornados but only caused minimal damage. 500,000 costumers were left without electricity due to the damage of the power lines. The rainfall and strong winds affected many homes across North Carolina destroying 7,000 houses, due to the storm 17,000 houses were in a state of disrepair and damaged 56,000 houses and made ten thousand people to live in shelters. more
