Open Question: Is this good for a 6th Grader?
My little sister is in 6th grade and I found a piece of her writing. We both love to write together, and so i'm asking if the 1st paragraph to a little book she's been writing is good: I sat by my bedroom window and let the gentle wind from the Atlantic Ocean fill my bedroom & mind. It was never often I got to do this, for I was almost always busy doing homework, chores, or off doing something else. From my bedroom window, I could see the oceans and the sailboats that glided across the ocean's mighty blue surface. White, puffy clouds that sat in the blue sky were like the seagulls- just waiting for something to come along on the beach and harm that being that came onto your beach; whether it be a real seagull ready to take your sandwich away, or if it was the white puffy cloud, ready to turn into a raincloud, and make you pack your bags and go home- soaked. Yes, a Seagull has once stolen my Sandwich, but when I was much younger. It seems like today, that Puffy White Raincloud has turned into a raincloud....My life was once lived as a Happy-Go-Lucky teenage girl, who had great parents, great friends, and a great boyfriend. But it almost seems like all of those things have snapped into a million pieces. I become focused once again, as I hear my Father call me from downstairs-His voice like a Lion-Ready to yell. --------- That was the 1st paragraph, please let me know what you think of my Sister's story so far. Thanks! moreOpen Question: Where should I take my kids for summer vacation?
I live in Ottawa Canada, so would like something on east coast, willing to go to US, no more than 2 days drive or major city that would have cheap air fare. Like the idea of a beach (Ocean) vacation. Would like to go for 1 week, maybe 10 days. Looking to spend around $2000 total. Any ideas? i am going on vacation with my parents and myself who is 20 and am trying to find a good vacation spot on the beach. We have been looking into daytona beach but have read mixed reviews with a lot of ppl saying its run down....We prefer the atlantic coast but are open to the west coast of florida. We don't want to pay anymore then $130 a night. Something that has at least convenience stores or restraunts withing walking distance. A place where there is stuff for all of us to do but also still stuff that i can go off on my own and do, in the area(doesn`t have to be walking distance). Also if u can recommend hotels or attractions that would be great! Any suggestions would be much appreciated. moreVoting Question: Palm Beach Atlantic University?

My friends and I are planning on going to Florida for spring break. We want to go for a little less than a week, and don't have a lot of money, so we are looking for a fun beach that's fairly inexpensive. What are the best warm beaches for Spring Break? Also, is there a difference between the Gulf beaches and the Atlantic beaches? thanks! moreResolved Question: New York City vs Los Angeles, am I right?
Okay so I just want to see what people think of my perceptions of these cities. To give some background, I grew up in Northern New Jersey very close to New York City and am currently living in Chicago for school. I have been to LA maybe a dozen times to visit family. From these experiences I have found that people in LA love to rave about the "great" weather, but I personally enjoy the changing of the seasons. I have found LA to be polluted, to have very poor urban planning with no central downtown and terrible traffic, but I will admit the beaches are nice. As an east coaster I have noticed that people in other parts of the country view us as mean and standoffish. From an outsiders perspective I can understand that, but this is just the language of the people. People in every region of the U.S. have different characteristics. East Coasters are fast paced, Midwesterners are extremely nice, Southerners have a psuedo-niceness about them and West Coasters are airheads. Knowing NYC pretty well, I would honestly have to say that NYC beats out all other cities in the U.S. in nearly every category, with the exception of weather. Plus if you are a career oriented person looking to attain success, LA is not the place to be. As they say if you can "make it" in New York, you can make it anywhere. Many people tend to forget that they call it the east coast because we also live on an ocean! The Atlantic is beautiful and has a unique feel in every state from Maine to Florida. So my final verdict is that LA has nice weather, but its infrastructure and people are turn offs. NYC on the other hand provides the full alpha world city experience, is where people go to become successful, but is expensive. I know this may seem offensive to West Coasters, but its more ridiculous to even debate which city is better. New York City is the reason why people visit America, its history and culture represent the roots of this country. So just be proud that you live in a country with such a city. moreResolved Question: What is the best hotel to stay at in Atlantic City for a single woman?

The following is an excerpt from a short piece I have casually been working on: My question is: Does the dialogue sound like teen dialogue and does the general feel of the passage sound friendly and casual? Also, does it sound like there is, perhaps, a crush between the two? The following morning, Jake went for a jog on the beach. There, he came across Emily. She was sitting alone on the sands, watching the sun rise over the calm waters of the Atlantic as its rays cast a gorgeous golden sheen on the surface. She was a pretty girl, her eyes a beautiful shade of dark green, and her hair was a rich and radiant golden blonde reaching down to her chest. She sat with her knees bent, clutched to her chest. “Hey, Em,” he said, sitting down in the sand next to her, “you're lookin' cute today.” She smiled, always finding it difficult to be in a bad mood around him. “You too,” she said, looking up at him, “what's up?” “Not much,” he replied, sifting the sand through his fingers, “how's your summer been?” “It's been okay,” she answered, “but it would be a lot better if I hadn't torn my Achilles tendon.” She adjusted the bandage wrapped around tightly around her thin ankle. “How'd that happen?” “You don't wanna know. The point is that I've been stuck in the house for the past month,” she whined. “Well, at least your party was a success last week,” he reminded her. “Yeah,” she agreed, “it all went pretty well. I missed seeing you there, though since you didn't show up.” He laughed. “Emily, I'm sorry,” he said lightheartedly, “but I got tied up that night doing homework.” She cast him a slightly put-off look. “You missed my party because you were doing homework? On a Friday night?” she asked indignantly. “Well — yeah, but...I--” he stumbled over his words, afraid that he had upset her. “Relax, I'm just kidding,” she said, smiling, “but seriously, Jake, you need to learn to have a little fun. It seems like you're always working!” “Oh, believe me, I heard plenty of that from Alexa before we broke up a few weeks ago,” he replied. My finance and I are going to be moving to the east coast of florida soon and we are trying to find a city comparable to Daytona Beach. We liked it there cause of how beautiful the city was at night off south atlantic street in daytona beach shores area. But it was also cheap. We also liked the fact you could live on the ocean for a fair price. I had a dream an hour ago during the day that I was looking out the window, (it was a rainy North Atlantic beach that I saw) and all of a sudden a grey/white bird flew into the window and died. (it had flown right into the window in front of me) I went outside and saw some sort of animal carry it away, off into the water.. (I have no memory of what exactly the animal looked like, other than it was black and furry, and seemed to be wild; like the fur was ruffled up. I wasn't sure how many legs it had or any other details though.) Then I woke up. What would be an interpretation of this dream? Would it even mean anything other than "I shouldn't have had Taco Bell for lunch"? moreResolved Question: Does the writing in this excerpt sound casual?

The land heats up more rapidly than the water. d. The water evaporates more rapidly from the ocean. moreResolved Question: Can I have some help with my character?
I need a city/town for my characters to live in. The story is about an underwater city. The city is located between North America, and the bottom of Europe and top of Africa. So it's in the Atlantic ocean. I need my character to live in the USA, and close to where the underwater city is. Like a state that is next to the Atlantic ocean, something like North Carolina or something. The city/town has to be right on the beach, and I'd prefer it if it weren't a really small town (like Forks in Twilight). It has to have a university/college. I don't live in the US, so it's a bit harder for me. I know it's best to write about a place you know or make up your own, but I need the place to be where I described. The story will mostly be set in the underwater city, anyways. Any ideas? moreResolved Question: Where in Florida can I find the best beach/water?
Ok, so I am moving to Florida in the next year. I go about twice a year and search different beaches but am never going to have time to search them all. I am looking for a place among the warmest cities through winter because I hate the cold, so from Sarasota south bound, with beautiful sand (like the white sand found on Miami or Siesta Key) and definitely that beautiful aqua colored water. I don't like the Atlantic because the water is too dark. Miami beach is the only acception on the Atlantic side because it is aqua colored for some reason. I love Key West but the beaches suck so if there is anyone who lives in Florida that could give me a list of the best beaches that match this criteria it'd be great. She sat with her knees bent, clutched to her chest. She wore a dark blue hoodie, skinny jeans, and flip-flops. “Hey, girl,” he said, sitting down in the sand next to her. “Hey,” she said, looking up at him, “what's up?” “Not much,” he replied, sifting the sand through his fingers, “how have Alex's friends been treating you?” “They've all been so nice to me,” she remarked, “especially Corinne.” There was a silence for a moment, filled only by the cries of the Laughing Gulls and the crashing of the waves along the shore. “I get the feeling that you two were pretty close at one time,” she added, perhaps as an off-hand remark, but it was clear she wanted to know more. “Yeah...” Jake replied awkwardly, “we were. Well, not really. She and I went out on a couple of dates a few years back when I was staying here in New Jersey for the summer. It didn't work out.” “Why not?” “She and I just didn't have enough in common,” he answered, continuing to pick up and drop the bits of sand between his fingers. “Oh,” Emily responded, effectively ending the discussion there. “So what do you think of Alex?” “Aw, she's great,” she said, smiling, and showing off her perfectly white teeth, “and she's really cute when she's with Eric.” moreResolved Question: Does the writing sound casual?

I'm trying to pick the best spot to vacation on the beach in FL that's close to Orlando. I did a lot of research and it sounds like the calmer better beaches are on the Gulf side, but 2 hours is just too far away when traveling with a child about a year old. I'm thinking of taking a 3 week holiday the last few weeks of March and was thinking of Cape Verde Islands or Israel. Are either of these two destinations good place to visit weather wise at this time? I was thinking of getting flights only for Cape Verde and doing a mix of backpacking, car hire and also traditional holiday stuff as well staying in hotels some nights on the beach and chilling. I was planning on hopping around a whole bunch of the islands and exploring, possible also taking tent with me... but I've heard that the Atlantic wind can be quite strong and I'm not sure on the camping rules there? Any advice from people who have been to Cape Verde, national, or Cape Verdean or Brits who have lived or do live there would be very much appreciated. I wanted to opt for Cape Verde because it seems a lot less spoilt than the Canaries and there's more of them do with a wide range of scenery and culture. As for Israel, getting there's not the problem I believe accommodation can be quite expensive? Any advice on cheaper priced accommodation would be great. I was probably looking at Tel Aviv as the base, maybe Eilat, and then doing a few excursion to Jerusalem, The Dead Sea and other historic and holy sites etc. Thanks for any recommendation, advice, and sharing any of your experiences in these countries. I am doing a Spanish project and I just read the top of the page and it says it has to be written in Spanish and not in English. I just wrote the whole thing in English because that is what we usually do for culture projects. I would use a translator but they are never accurate. Please please please help! Thank you!! Here is what needs to be translated from English to Spanish: Uruguay is surrounded on three sides by water. To the west is the Uruguay River. To the southwest is the Rio de la Plata. The Atlantic Ocean is in the southeast. Brazil lies to the north of Uruguay. Capital The capital of Uruguay is called Montevideo. Montevideo is a port and is Uruguay’s largest city consisting of over 1,000,000 people. It was established in 1726 originally as a military base and is located in the south part of the country. Population Uruguay’s population is about 3.5 million people. 8810 are of European descent. President Dr. Tabare Vazquez is the current president, elected October 31st, 2004. The climate is mild. Uruguay has warm to hot summers and cool to cold winters. During the winter, Uruguay sometimes gets polar air because of its latitude. In the summer, however, it gets tropical air from Brazil. History Uruguay was originally settled by the Spanish and Portugese in the 1600’s. The Spanish used cattle. They became a factor in the increase of wealth of the country. The capital, Montevideo was founded mostly because of its natural harbor. Culture Because of the different conquerors and immigrants, Uruguay has a diverse culture. The architecture varies from Colonial fortresses to modern urban areas. There are many writers, artists, and musicians. Carlos Vilaro is one of the well known sculptors of Uruguay. There is even a carnival similar to Mardi Gras. Tourist Attractions There are modern skyscrapers, cathedrals, and historic areas in Montevideo, the capital. The historic district called “Old Town” is a popular attration. In the summer, there are beaches and resorts. The beautiful Punta del Diablo is also popular with the tourists. Well this happened like a few months ago but i've been wondering about it so I figured I'd ask. I was at the beach during a cloudy day in August ( I think the news said a storm or something was developing in the Atlantic Ocean). The waves were hitting the beach pretty hard and at one beach the waves were creating a tide or something that was reaching all the way to where cars were parked on the beach, forcing the officials to close that particular beach down. So anyway me and my friends went to another beach that was still open we had our body boards and decided to get in the water. We was having fun and I one point I decided to go a little further out to where the water was up to my chest (I'm 6'2 so i guess the water was +5ft deep or something.) So then A rather large swell was coming but I didn't want to ride it so I jumped over it and when the came back down the water was to my chest but I didn't feel no land under my feet! So I tried to use my swimming skills to get back to beach but it felt like I was getting sucked in. So then I don't know what happen ( I can't remember whether I was panicking yet or not) but i accidentally let go of my board which was tied to my wrist and somehow a wave came which took me back to shore and I tumbled back onto the beach. I went to tell my friends what happened but they just said "o rly" and I stopped caring and went to go body board again ( i didn't go as far, but that may have been because I lost my string). Then I remembered this guy at a local school getting killed at the beach by something called riptide. Was what I experienced riptide or was that me just being stupid in the ocean?I think you should be able to get your points back if no one answers your question moreResolved Question: does this make sense? 10 points best answer!?

“ Hurry up Katie, we are getting late. Are you in your room?” mom yelled from the kitchen downstairs. “Yes, mom I will be there in a minute” I yelled back from my room, while packing all the stuffs we might need at the beach. “Yes, finally we are going to the beach” I said to myself. Looking forward to this day since the beginning of my Summer vacation. The beach is one of my favorite place to go during the summer. In a rush picking up my bag went downstairs in a hasty that I almost tripped down the stairs . Upon arriving downstairs I could see all my family members were ready and enthusiastic for our day at the beach. We packed up our bags in my dad’s car and headed for the Virginia beach, located in the South Hampton Roads area of Virginia, on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. While, sitting in the car in order to not bore myself took my iPod out of my bag and started listening to some cool songs. Knowing that the trip would take approximately 3-4 hours downloaded some new songs as well. Singing along the beat of “Taking Back My Love” by Enrique Iglesias my brother asked if he could borrow my iPod for his enjoyable purpose. After handing the iPod to him, filled with tiredness decided to look out the car’s window. Through the window I happen to gaze my eyes upon the green forests along the road and promptly fell back asleep. Suddenly, the screeching noise of the car woke me up and finally realized our arrival at the beach. I don’t know how long I had fallen asleep for. When I asked my mom she told me I took an hour long nap. Without the waste of any more time I rushed out of the car quickly taking my belongings and strolled towards the beach with my family. Walking through the sand I could feel the hot sand squishing between my toes. The wind blew softly and tousling my hair away from my face. The smell of sun block, salty sea breeze and plastic floaters woke my mind. The sun was shining in my skin. The feeling of relaxation, serene and comfortableness rushed through me after a long time. Oh wow, I could sit here forever and forget about the rest of the world. Surfers in their suits were enjoying surfing at the same speed as the wave. Everyone looked pleased to be here especially my younger brother. He asked me to come with him so I went with him to play with the waves. At first the waves were small but later they were big and amusing. In a little while, my parents joined us too and we enjoyed ourselves keeping up with the waves. Later, we looked for shells, took few photos ,built sand castles. I love making sand castles. It is one of my favorite thing to do at the beach. I even wrote my name on the sea shore but it was gone in no time as the water washed it away. Guess it is a part of life old memories being replaced by the new ones. By the end of the day, I was extremely tired and starving to death. I had way too much fun that day. Finally, we changed and ate delicious food at this pretty restaurant on our way back. I wanted stay at the hotel by the beach but since my parents were busy with their work we couldn’t do so. “We can come to the beach sometime next month again and stay over there for few days” my dad told me in exciting voice. “ Really dad?” I replied back anxiously. I couldn't believe that I am coming to the beach again. The beauty of the ocean is irreplaceable by any other object of the world.I could live there forever and never get tired staring at the deepest blue ocean. moreTop Atlantic Beach Links
