Resolved Question: Can I Sue the Airline for lying to Me?
Before judging me, please read my entire question. I am 30 years old and for the past three years have lived with my Mom and Dad because I didn't have a job to support myself. They've paid all my bills and supported me. Recently I have felt guilty that I don't do anything for them in exchange for them letting me crash. So this weekend I surprised them by telling them I was taking them to Miami for a three day get away, and I was going to take care of the airfare. In the middle of the night it dawned on me how easy it would be to get us roundtrip tickets without having to pay a dime! This was the best idea I had ever had, something I was shocked no one had thought of before. They actually were excited by the proposal, and my Dad booked a reasonable hotel by the beach in advance. My mom kept asking me how I could afford the round-trip tickets for the three of us, but I told her not to worry, I had it under control. My mother made sure to request time off her job as well, Dad's already retired. When we got to the airport Mom asked me which airline we were flying. I thought about this, then I began laughing hysterically- it was THAT great a moment to realize. "Which one do you want?" I asked back to her. My mother didn't seem to get the wonderfulness about the situation, as she balked a bit and said "Didn't you book the tickets?" I decided to just go with American Airlines. I told my parents to wait by check-in desk and I would handle everything. The ticket agent said 'next' and I was ready to go. "Hi, I would like three stand-by seats for a flight going to Miami, anytime in the next two hours would be great." I was confident and happy I was doing this so smoothly. The ticketing agent seemed confused. "Sir didn't you book your tickets already?" "No. I figured that most of the flights out of airports have empty seats on them, as they were empty the last time I flew on one of them. No one's sitting in them, and it seems a waste not to have people there. So Im sure you have a plane with three seats open and ready. Its cool if they're coach too, I'm lenient." When the lady told me that unfortunately that's not how things worked and that I still had to pay, I was furious. I tried arguing with her, but then security came over to see what the commotion was all about. So did my parents. When it was disclosed to my Mom and Dad I had never bought the tickets, they were even more pissed. Dad checked to see how much last-minute flights would cost to Florida, and it turned out to be a whoppning $1,200 per person. Obviously we left the airport and back home, and now neither of my parents are speaking to me. And my mom recently told me she wants me out of the house and getting a job, since I was old enough. MY question is why can't I sue the Goddamn airport! THOSE planes have empty seats all the damn time with no body in them. The ticket lady could have easily 'snuck' us on a flight, and it would have been fine. What company do I go through to sue them (won't mention the airport, lets just say its located in Omaha, Nebraska). moreResolved Question: How historically accurate was the Omaha Beach scene in Saving Private Ryan?
When compared to real d-day video footage such as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr-cekyZN04, not a single mortar or artillery explosion can be seen at the beach landings. Contrast this with the scene in the movie, where explosions can be seen everywhere. moreResolved Question: does anyone know the value of a "gendarmerie hochalpinist" autrian police badge from WWII ?
I received the badge as a gift from a boss of mine who's father fought from the 2nd wave on omaha beach till the end of 1945, he acquired war "trophies" and this was part of his collection. Its complete and in pretty good shape. I cant find any information on where is was made, how many were produced and which units it was issued to. Also curious of its value. moreResolved Question: Do the Marines have good special forces?
I want to join the Marines, preferably as an officer. I am thinking about the Army also because they have a lot of special forces like Delta, Rangers ect. And I want to get involved in special forces. But I like the Marines better than the army because they are tougher and it's harder to earn the title of "Marine". Marines are also the ones to stormed Omaha beach, and took Iwo Jima. That being said are there as many opportunitys to get picked up by special forces in the Marines? I want to join as infantry, but I want to eventually get picked up by spec ops. moreResolved Question: History Channel D-Day Tanks?
Hey, I remember watching a special on the History Channel that was about the loss of the tanks at Omaha Beach and how that affected all the other beaches since it took a longer time for those at Omaha to take the beach without their tanks. It mainly talked about the DD tanks and some unique tanks that had "chainsaws" on them to break the barbed wire or set of the mines. It used both actual footage and some acting segments. Any suggestions?Sorry, the question is does anyone know how to find this specific special? I can't find it anywhere on the History Channel. moreResolved Question: What influenced the name Omaha beach? Did a person influence the name?

I've found some and I'm amazed at how many military relatives he has. Stanley Armour Dunham Stanley Dunham is the grandfather of Barack Obama. He was born in 1918 and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, enlisting just after the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Stanley and his wife Madelyn raised Obama in Honolulu, Hawaii. In addition to Obama, Stanley is related to six US presidents: James Madison, Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush.[28][29] He died in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1992, and is buried at the Punchbowl National Cemetery. Ralph Dunham Great-uncle of Barack Obama, older brother of Stanley Dunham, born 1916. He served in the U.S. Army as an assignment and personnel officer during World War II, landing at Normandy's Omaha Easy Red Beach on D-Day plus four, working his way through France, Italy and Germany.[30][31] Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham Barack Obama's maternal grandmother was born in 1922 and died on November 2, 2008.[32] She was a bank vice president in Hawaii. Obama said that when he was a child, his grandmother "read me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and told me about the men and women who marched for equality because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something."[11] According to Barack Obama's Dreams from My Father,[33] his great-grandmother Leona McCurry was part Native American, which Obama believed Leona held as a "source of considerable shame" and "blanched whenever someone mentioned the subject and hoped to carry the secret to her grave"; whereas McCurry's daughter (Obama's maternal grandmother) "would turn her head in profile to show off her beaked nose, which along with a pair of jet-black eyes, was offered as proof of Cherokee blood."[34] To date, no concrete evidence has surfaced of Cherokee heritage. Obama's maternal heritage consists mostly of English ancestry, with much smaller amounts of German, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Swiss, and French ancestry.[3] Born in Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1640, Barack Obama's 8-greats-grandfather was his earliest ancestor born in North America. Charles Thomas Payne Great-uncle of Barack Obama, younger brother of Madelyn Dunham, born 1925. Served during World War II in the U.S. Army 89th Infantry Division.[35] Obama has often described Payne's role in liberating Ohrdruf forced labor camp.[36] There was brief media attention when Obama mistakenly identified the camp as Auschwitz during the campaign.[37] In 2009, Payne spoke about this experiences: Ohrdruf was in that string of towns going across, south of Gotha and Erfurt. Our division was the first one in there. When we arrived there were no German soldiers anywhere around that I knew about. There was no fighting against the Germans, no camp guards. The whole area was overrun by people from the camp dressed in the most pitiful rags, and most of them were in a bad state of starvation.[38] Payne appeared in the visitor's gallery at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, when his great-nephew was nominated for President.[39] He was the assistant director of the University of Chicago's Library.[36] 1984).[52] Robert Wolfley Barack Obama's great-great-great-grandfather. Normandy, France, once a stunning and tranquil beach, now a devilish wasteland shielded by obstacles. June 6th was a rain filled morning with wind that turned the glacial rain horizontal. On Omaha beach, one of the five designated landings, the tide was low, but waves crashed high on the beach. Steel beams were placed across each other to form thousands of large X’s. Wooden and metallic beams pointed towards the sea with mines strapped to the end to deter the Allies and stop amphibious vehicles from landing. Barbed wire extended all over the beach to slow the attackers. Mines littered the waterlogged sand of the coast line. At the end of the sand, further inland, on Omaha were 6 miles of cliffs as high as 200 feet in some places. On top of these cliffs were dozens of bunkers, trenches, and gun emplacements. Provisions had been incoming since the new commander, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, had been overseeing this part of the Hitler’s Sea Wall. Soldiers were tired from unloading the supplies, but preparations still had to be made for an invasion that had been predicted to occur within the next few months in an unknown location. Men worked continuously on the beach to engineer in more fortifications and defensive armaments that were already scarce. Late in the day on June 5th, Allied bombers attacked the beach, to reduce the amount of hostile forces in the area, using tons of bombs. Consequently creating “foxholes” for soldiers to hide and protect themselves from enemy fire that would occur soon enough. Sandy bluffs were partly destroyed by the Germans, but some still stood intact. Past the beaches, above the cliffs and behind the bunkers, were fields that had previously been covered with high yielding crops. After Hitler’s forces began building the fortresses along the coast, they flooded the land, which had previously been farm land, behind the bunkers and cliffs to stop the area from being used as a landing zone. Back on the beach, German guns were mounted so that in places there blistering lead could overlap and cause even more fatalities. At the shore of the beach, one of Erwin Rommel’s many famous inventions, called Dragons Teeth, were outstretched to slash apart the bottoms of vessels coming ashore. Rommel’s wild inventions and genius defensive fortifications mixed with the natural geography of Normandy beaches posed a formidable foe against American and British soldiers, ships, and minds. moreVoting Question: I fought in World War 2 at omaha beach, I died 7 times but still survived?

One thing is for certain ~ one of the 11 frames that survived from his 2nd wave landing on Omaha Beach on 6 June 1944 was a definite "true" picture; so much so that Stephen Ambrose used it on the cover of his book "D-Day". Thanks in advance!IA ~ not convincing to me at all. I'd like to see that source ~ Capa made no such statement. I thumb no person down to Qs I ask btw.CP ~ not convinced by your statement. You normally provide much better answers than the one here. I will accept your personal belief however.Muinghan ~ I disagree based on the left hand is falling in such a manner as not to protect the body from the "hit" of the ground. I will respectfully disagree with you my "Sister-in-Arms".Muinghan ~ thanks for the link but even within the article I will agree with Mr. Steinman in that he says: "It is easy to attack the authenticity of any photograph, especially one made more than 70 years ago. Unless Capa was a liar, and there is no evidence he was, I don't think it is necessary to doubt it. Keep in mind that Capa never made more of that photo than any other he took. There are those who can't let well enough alone so perhaps they will always doubt the authenticity of that photo." Not convinced ~ I am of the belief it was as real as anything else he did. Look at the left hand if you can get your hands on a large enough photo; you know the field of fire as good as anyone I know ~ get "hit" then fall.Muinghan ~ well, I see your point and I guess I'll have to chew on this for awhile. But the Spaniard in the photo was in fact "KIA" so how does one account for this? Off to a meeting.....any balance back to date of death of the Spaniard photographed and the recorded date on file? I guess this would be my one and only manner to verify the question as to whether the photo was real or not. moreResolved Question: What is answer to these Double H words? An elderly American gentleman of 83 arrived in Paris by plane. At the French immigration desk, the man took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry-on bag. "You have been to France before, Monsieur?" the Immigration officer asked, sarcastically. The elderly gentleman admitted he had been to France previously. "Then you should know well enough to have your passport ready." The American gentleman says, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it." "Impossible. The American people always have to show their passports on arrival in France!" The elderly gentleman gave the French Immigration Officer a long hard look.
