Resolved Question: I want to move to Australia?

I've always wanted to move to Australia, for as long as I can remember. There's a variety of reasons, but I'm not going to bother putting them up here. Anyway! I was hoping to go to university in Australia to study medicine to get a feel of the country, and then if I like it stay and work (if I can, of course). The starting year of university would be 2012, and I was just wondering... how difficult is it to get into an Australian university from the UK? I'd be expecting A/A* grades. Do Australian universities like extracurriculars? Would I have to fly over for an interview? It's not really convenient to spend 24 hours on a flight during term time, it'd mean missing at least 3 days of school. Plus travelling on my own.. Also, is the medicine programme similar to the UK one or the American one? As in, do you study for about 5 or so years straight from leaving school, then you can work in a hospital, practice, etc., or is it like a postgraduate programme like the US? (I think it's that in the US... :\) Is it a hard field to find a job in in Aus? How difficult would it be to get a visa to study (possibly work part time too) in Australia, and then a visa where I can work full time as a doctor (possibly following on straight from university)? What kind of visas would I need? A student visa and a permanent residency one I think? How long before leaving would I have to apply? Finally... what's the best area in Australia? I was thinking somewhere with really nice, hot weather all year round (cold, rainy weather - one of the reasons I hate the UK so much haha).. and somewhere quite outdoorsy and laid back... beaches, athletic.. that sort of thing. Money isn't really *that* much of an issue concerning anything.. but cheaper is better, flights are really expensive. Oh, and my mum has a friend in Australia who may be willing to sponsor me, if that helps? He is English though.. Thank you, and sorry for the long question (: Any info is appreciated ^.^ more

Resolved Question: What would you like to ask?Why do americans seem to think that they won WW2?

It happened again today by another dumb American..... being told in Paris (where i live) that if it wasn't for the USA that i would be speaking German. By the way, i am English!! Sure...... the Americans are responsible for the end of the Pacific campaign of the war, but why do they seem to think that they are single handedly responsible for the end of WW2? The combination of an extremely bad privatised education system and them relying on their Hollywood movies instead of books for their history lessons? In reality the Americans did little in comparison with the British, Canadians and Russians in Europe, but in Films it's always portrayed that they were the only ones there which really sickens us Europeans. Two major points are way out of sync with reality..... Canadian and British soldiers outnumbered American troops 5-1 on the beaches of Brittany and Normandy for the landings, but Americans seem to be under the impression that is was an all American event. The second is that they always claim to have liberated Auschwith and Birkenau which can't be further from the truth as it was purely a British and Russian campaign that liberated the 2 camps. It's common knowledge that the Americans prolonged the European campaign by about 9 months due to their relentless mistakes throughout northern france, Holland, and the Bulge...... as Eisenhower formerly apologised for this to the Allies, but does this ever get shown in their movies??? There are flags flown in every town, village and city on V.E. day..... The Canadian flag, The British, The Russian, The French, and The Resistance flag, but no American flag....... why????? It's because france doesn't recognise that America is responsible for its liberation. Sure a lot of Americans died, but they are not considered to have played a major part in comparison to the other countries. If you ask any European or Canadian or Australian who won the second world war, and they will tell you it was the ALLIES. If you ask the same question to an American, and he will tell you it was America. Come on Americans....... do yourselves a favor, and pick up a book instead of reching for your Hollywood DVDs next time you want a history lesson. PS.... I am half french, half British.... bith my grandfathers died for the liberation of France and i am eternally grateful to them. You may find it difficult to believe, but here in Europe we are actually aware of what has happened on our own doorsteps, and are taught an unbiased true version of the events that happened here!! And Americans wonder why the world has a generally low opinion of them. I do by the way have quite a few American friends, so i'm not trying to paint everyone with the same brush!!!!!!! more

Voting Question: Fix this sentence please?

Hi, This the first sentence from my english essay, but it doesn't sound particularly good: 'If asked to describe their home country, most Australians would detail our famous sandy beaches, vast outback plains, our easy-going culture or our egalitarian, multicultural society' How can I restructure it so that it sounds better? Resolved Question: Should I study abroad in Uni Melbourne, Uni Sydney, or Uni Wollongong?

I'm an Asian-American female from Southern California, and I plan on studying abroad in Australia during my junior year, in February of 2011. I've searched through many Australian Universities that my college offers and, based on the courses I need (I'm a Psychology major), I've narrowed them down to: University of Melbourne (my initial choice but I'm not so sure anymore), University of Sydney, or University of Wollongong? The following are the criteria I would like to meet during my study abroad experience in Australia... 1. FRIENDLY and easy-to-talk-to people with whom I can become lifelong friends 2. Good student social life on campus (clubs, sports, activities, social events) 3. EASY access to both city/nightlife AND outdoors activities (I would like to go scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, swimming with the dolphins, beach bumming, and all that jazz) 4. Weather that isn't too cold or too hot (65-90 degrees F) A description of how I would like my study abroad experience to be is: I would like a university with good classes and professors I respect and enjoy learning from who would make me feel comfortable during my adjustment in Australia. I would like to join several clubs/extracurricular activities and attend several events so that after classes I would be able to socialize and make good use of my time. I would also like to have an active night life, not necessarily partying (although I wouldn't mind the occasional party), but going out on the town for a drink, or to a nice restaurant, museum, concert, or theater (of course I don't mean every night, but I would want to have access to it whenever I want). I would also like to have relatively easy access (as in easily reached by bus or train) to nice beaches, outdoor activities, sightseeing (wild animals, landmarks, beautiful scenery, natural sites) during the weekends and Spring break. I DEFINITELY want to go SCUBA diving and I would also like to go snorkeling, hiking, swimming with the dolphins, and all that outdoorsy jazz. A balance of all these things is VERY important to me; I want to experience Australia to the fullest extent, and missing out on any city life or any outdoor life would upset me very much. Based on the cities these universities are in, and particularly if you know anything about the universities themselves, which one out of the three would you recommend best fits my criteria? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot everyone! =] more

Resolved Question: Possible characteristics of this foster mutt, a Boston Terrier, Aust. Cattle Dog, Blue Heeler mix?

A friend is seriously considering adopting this dog but has not yet made the trip to meet her. http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=13839871?rvp=1 She is a cat person with 2 adult felines looking for a small-medium (not toy) dog that will do well inside with her cats. There are two dog parks and a beach nearby for exercise and she would take the dog to one daily in addition to walks but she does not want an "athletic" dog. She wants an intelligent dog but not one who needs tremendous mental stimulation to keep from becoming frustrated. The one Australian Cattle Dog have I met was the sort who did need this "busyness" so I wonder about this part of the mix. And she wants a dog not prone to major health issues. The dog needs to be easily groomed and must like people. The dog she is interested in mostly seems like a good match. Any input from serious dog people would be much appreciated. more

Resolved Question: What do you think? It is an essay slash story?

Skin deep; Intolerance and the youth of Australia 4.15 ‘ding, ding’ The monotone droll of the school bell shocks me from my transcendent state and into the real world. Friday detention has just ended. “Students, you may go now”, the teacher folds her Vogue as I leave with the glassy eyed derelicts and self proclaimed rebels of our school. I run the the train station to see my train driving off just as I arrive. Great. Twenty minutes until the next train arrives. I look for a place to sit, the train station has two benches. One bench is crowded, with five or six teenagers, not much older then me, crammed on to one bench, all silent and listening to ipods, and another with one girl sitting alone. She is Islamic and is wearing a Hijab as she reads ‘Twilight’. As I sit down next to the girl I wonder why is it that people would rather cram themselves uncomfortably on to one bench then sit next to someone who just looks different? Intolerance. We couldn’t be an intolerant nation, could we?”. ‘No’ most of us would think, thinking of intolerance you would think of the segregation of blacks from whites in America and the stolen generation of Aboriginees. That is all in the past No-one would think that in the twenty-first century in a multicultural nation with no state religion intolerance would be so prominent, right? However, unfortunately, amongst the youth of Australia, it is. The youth of Australia. The generation Ys. We believe we aren’t rascist, we couldn’t be!We’re more connected to the world than ever. Yet how come gay teenagers are being bashed and driven to depression, how come over 5000 youths banded at Cronulla beach to bash anyone of Middle Eastern appearance? A sullen looking boy on the other bench pulls out his phone and logs on to facebook. The next generations of young Australians tweens, teenagers and people in their early twenties are using the internet to connect more and more. The internet, most young people spend more than their fair share of time using it. The internet is really useful for finding information and communicating with people all around the globe. Understanding how other people live is so much easier than fifty years ago when we got most of our information about others from gossip. However the internet has been abused and utilised as a tool to spread a message of intolerance and hate through groups on social networking websites, websites, blogs and video websites. How young does intolerance start? Children as young as eight are calling people and things “Gay”, how is it children as young as eight are critisising people by slandering their sexual orientation?. Young girls are calling themselves and other fat when they have a perfectly normal body, why?, because the beauty ideal in Australian media is the impossibly beautiful, slender model. In Australia the average age of an Anorexia sufferer is now twelve and children as young as seven and eight are being treated for the disorder everyday. In the eyes of the law, Australia is a multicultural and tolerant nation - all citizens over the age of eighteen have the right to vote regardless of size, race, gender or religion and all children can recieve an education regardless of size, race, gender or religion. All Australians are entitled to public healthcare and welfare if needed. So what is the issue? Sitting here, I am realising it’s the attitudes of young Australians that need to change. We need to stop judging people on appearances. Acceptance - that’s what matters. more

Resolved Question: General and Chinese culture in Australia?

Hi I'm a 3rd generation chinese born in Singapore. Some of my family members left for Australia when I was a child, mostly to perth and sydney. Might be joning them in Perth permently after I've completed my national service. There are quite a few reasons for me leaving, namely because of the limited amount of jobs we can do. Most end up as businessmen, engineers and in the office. Not much chance to do other jobs such as the arts. Secondly because of the huge pressure and fast paced city life turning into stress living in Singapore can become. Thirdly, I'm rather tired of the limited amount of freedoms we have here, wherethe freedom of press or speech I'm quite sick already. My chinese is also really really bad, I grew up speaking english at home, so sometimes I do have some problems talking to people in my day to day life esp when other chinese people think I'm chinese and speak to me in the language thinking I'll understand but I don't. I've only been to WA during the summer, I've been to Kalbarri all the way to the southern towns such as Agusta and Margaret river. But i've never stayed for more than 2 or 3 weeks. I'm farmillar with the beach culture, the way people speak and the lingo but I would like to know more about the underlying culture and lifestyle aussies experience rather than a tourist who have stayed for no more than 3 weeks. Such as the price of housing, things I can do or not do and tips on crime. How do Australians really view the multiculturlism policy that the goverment has been promoting and immigration from other countries? And since I'm on this topic I would like to clear a few questions on the Australian Chinese culture. Back in Singapore there is a fine line between those who have been living here for generations who for example speak English and dielects and those who just arrived as students who mainly speak Mandrine. We don't see ourselves as Chinese or part of China at all but rather Singaporean or Singaporean chinese. Do the Chinese in Australia think that way too? Also I have heard that there is a large population of Chinese people in the NSW and Victoria. But what interest me is that they have been living in Australia for a long time, even as long as the first English settlers and convicts. There is'nt much info on this particular group on the internet other than wikipedia. Hopefully you aussies can help shed some light on that? Lastly, as in Singapore, there have been a large influx of Mainland Chinese nationals. Has this in anyway affected life in Australia or led to any racial tensions? Thanks so much! more

Voting Question: Where should I live in Sydney?

Ok, so I am immigrating to Australia in a few years after university by myself and I have already decided that the location I want to move to is Sydney (as it is close to a friend I know). I am currently living in Ireland and it's my first time moving to another country for good; and especially a country as far away as Australia. So obviously, I'm a bit nervous unless I get all my details right on where I should go and what I should look out for. I would appreciate help from any native Australians and especially those who live or have lived in Sydney. Can anyone give me any places in Sydney that would be a nice place to live for a newcomer like myself? And please let me know why it would be a suitable location. I am deadly afraid of sharks; and this has become a problem incase I step on a beach that hasn't been netted. Someone please tell me that most beaches in Sydney are protected? Any more information that you would like to share with me will help me a lot. Thank you! :) more

Resolved Question: Can my dreams predict where i will travel to ?

Okay now this is all a little new to me. I have never took any interest in my dreams... Until now. Last year...(2009) about march-april time i had a dream... In this dream i can remember being in a weird place that i had never been before. I remember it being a dirty poverty stricken place. The people where asian... indian types wearing dirty clothes. I felt like i was in the slums. But the one thing i remember most from that dream was the Hindi Sanscript writing everywhere on shop signs,posters... when i woke from that dream i told everyone about it because i had never even imagined such a place or seen it on tv or books etc... so after a while i thought nothing of it... THEN!... about 4 months later i applied to go volunteer with a british organization in a developing country... i passed all the tests and requirements and was then told i would be spending 10 weeks in NEPAL!! when i got to Nepal... it was just like my dream... poverty stricken, sanscript writing... it was just so weird.. i kept telling everyone that i had dreamed of this place even before i knew i was going... Just recently i dreamed that i was on a beach... it wasn't just any beach... this beach was just amazing!!!!!! i was on a bus running along a little country road beside the beach.. i got off and walked onto the beach.. the sand was pure white... the sea was pure light blue and sky was sooo blue!! there where hedges and palm trees separating the beach from the little road. i remember seeing an island out to see... i then go to put my towel onto the beach, when these two girls come to me and start asking me my name... they had australian/new zealand accents... when i woke up i wondered if i had dreamed of a real place and maybe i was predicting where i would travel to next... ive actually been looking at australian, newzeland beaches... do you think this means anything.. am i predicting my future travels?? more

Resolved Question: I got into a youtube argument in a video's comment section? is this person being stupid?

Sorry. But this is going to be VERY long, lol. I was watching a video of indians protesting in Australia, and commented. My question is, is the person who is arguing with me genuinly making good points or is he/she being an idiot? (because i cant comphrehend why this person keeps making my comments look negative when im sure they aren't) ME: they should be careful of a riot.....just like the Cronulla beach riots....and the riots of australia day last year. the same minority of the ignorant youths of anglo saxons might rally up and find other stupid close-minded whites and start a fight im not saying all white aussie are racist, just alking about the ones who are HER(i think it's a she): You do yourselves no favors making up stories against Australians. Ask yourself how you would feel. ME: why dont you search it up. Search up '2009 Australia day riots'.you obviously havent, because you told me it wasnt true and that I was the one who was making it up- when clearly an internet search says differently. and ask myself how I would feel? about what. I am an Australian, and I have heard this news story in the aussie news.i am not making any stories about against aussies, and am only angry with the racist ones. ''im not saying all white aussie are racist, just alking about the ones who are '' ''i am not making any stories about against aussies, and am only angry with the racist ones'' also I am not referencing a lie. jesus. did you search it up ''australia day riots 2009''? i was only refering to the racist people who went through the streets being violent, just like cronulla. and that these ppl should be careful or else another riot may happen HER: Pixilated, you spend all your time denigrating white Australians, why? You are referencing a lie to support a hope that white people are racist, just to excuse your own racism, which is not what Australians do. You promote disrespect to all Australians. I am not white and you are disrespecting me, a student. Every new wave of migrants disrupt the system. They grate on social norms and you choose to blame them for an unavoidable situation, calling all whites racist. ME: How am I? I said THE ONES WHO ARE RACIST, I didn't say ALL white australians. Of the white australians, there are some youths out there who are racist, and these are the ones who I hate. These are the ones i'm talking against. my god, and I repeated that twice in my messages HER: Neither, the fantasied white Australia Day riots or Cronula were racist, but you are. If you want to go about town, hating on all white people because of propaganda, well you should realize that me and other people of mixed decent are going to see Indians as racist. Nobody else is complaining, but we all hear is that you think Australia is a vessel of India, how? It isn't, and you are lucky not to feel the wrath on non-white Australians, who to most people here, think white people are kind. ME: 1. did you search up online news articles with the keywords ''australia day 2009''? if you searched it up you would realise it was not fake. you keep telling me it IS, but if i am trying to GIVE YOU PROOF, 3 TIMES ALREADY 2. and yes both were racist. if you searched up both of these issues on the internet, you should have known. for example, wikipedia(dot)com says, ''The 2005 Cronulla riots were a series of racially motivated riots and mob violence'' post cont. next comment 3. All I said is that these protestors should be careful. another group, and I WAS SIMPLY ONLY REFERENCING AN EXAMPLE OF ONE, was a group of anglo-saxons(or white aussies). AND I QUOTED TO YOU 2 TIMES OF ME SAYING THAT I WAS NOT SAYING ALL WHITES WERE RACIST, AND THAT I WAS ONLY POINTING OUT THE ONES OF THE GROUP THAT WERE. I am saying that every race has its racists. 3. nowhere did I say that that these indians were racist, nor did I say they weren't.post continued next comment & you tell me i think australia is a vessel of india? what does this mean? and I do not think I was trying to say this.all I was trying to say was that another group who could be angered by this, may start a riot or fight against them. I mean, look at the magnitude of these protestors? obviously it could flare up into something violent. and where did I say I was hating on all white people? I DID NOT. I only hate the whites who happen to be racist, not ALL OF THEM. HER: The protesters are finished. The Australian government stopped allowing Indian office's to handle visa application, that were falsified. The colleges were a front for permanent residency, and they have been closed. The student numbers are halved. The half protesting are gone. They had no real issue because statistics show the assaults were low compared to other countries. They made a threat an nd carried it out, race is irrelevant. Do you actually subscribe to India's sensationalist media? ME: the millionth time, i diME: i did not know that they stopped protesting. however, to repeat myself once more, i am not trying to be biased here. all i wanted to say was that with a PROTEST or call of that of that magnitude, that potential riots may happen. violence may happen, with another group who could be mad also, yes statistics say they were lower, but i was mainly referring to another bunch of people. when you get attacked, ppl may counter, yes? also i said ''another group'', one that i have no idea who would be formed by. however i did refer to some of the white youths who happened to be racist, as an example. since race is a big issue in this vid and in this group of indians, another group can make something out of it. depending on the people and the attitudes, there could have been flare ups. HER: So, spell it out! ME: well I had to, because, judging from your replies you didnt get what I said despite numerous times I tried to explain. So I thought I might say it in more detail in case you didnt get it again. you thought that I thought all whites were racist, and I told you and explained why i didnt, and yet you still said it twice after. and same thing about the australia day riots of 2009. You kept telling me it was fake when I told you to search it up for proof. u even thought I was being biased, & i wasnt more

Voting Question: Any Australian University suggestions?

I am interested in studying abroad in Australia. I am a business major, and I want to go to a university there where it is fitting for my major, but also where I can experience all the nature of Australia. I want to go to the beach, check out the outback, go hiking, and all that other fun stuff. I know there's a university in Tasmania that I thought would be cool to go to or maybe somewhere in New Zealand? All suggestions would be appreciated! Resolved Question: Australian drinking culture?? your thoughts on it?

I was recently in the US, and i saw our schoolies celebration broadcasted on your News (all the school leavers go to the beach for 1 week and drink the whole time, its tradition) and i was wondering if we have a reputation for being binge drinkers/ drink alot over here. I was at Sydney harbour on NYE and the WHOLE harbor was drunken and having fun (me included) like literally, people set camp and had a cooler each for booze. 15,000 strong in 1 area alone. DO we have a drinking rep in any other countries? Just curious. more

Resolved Question: Where in Australia should I move to? I need ideas.?

Hi everyone, I am an Australian citizen so no visa problems or anything but I am stuck in a rut and need to move somewhere. My options are wide open so suggest anywhere....... Here is my list of necessities...... 1. Needs to be somewhere where I can live on a farm or small acerage. 2. Not too 'bogan' 3. low crime rate 4. Cheap-ish. 5. within distance to a city, I do occasionally need to fullfill my city girl necessities 6. good work opportunities (for a business student) 7. somewhat near a uni 8. within at least a few hours of the beach. 9. cafe sort of place I am very much a city girl with a country lifestyle if that makes sense, I love the big lights and fashion etc but I have to live on a farm because of my horses. I want somewhere that isn't too bckward and run down like a socio-economically disdvantaged area or something so its hard to find tha balance in a place that isn't right in the city. I was thinking maybe the NSW southern Highlands or somewhere on the great ocean road like Warrnambool or Portland or maybe even somewhere in southern WA I just don't want to be in a place that is hot or humid so I probably would say Qld and NT are out. Where would you suggest? Many thanks more

Resolved Question: Can you wear coloured contacts at the beach?

Hey, i've never worn contacts or glasses at any stage. Australia day is coming up and i was thinking of doing something unique by wearing coloured contacts, green and gold, or perhaps the Australian flag. But i'll be at the beach for a part of the day, so im wondering about wearing contacts at the beach. Should i save my money, or go for it? more

Resolved Question: Who wrote this article?

I received yesterday without a link? "No apology necessary... At a time when our president and other politicians tend to apologize for our country's prior actions, here's a refresher on how some of our former patriots handled negative comments about our country. These stories are good reminders of how proud and thankful we should always be as Americans. JFK'S Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60's when DeGaule decided to pull out of NATO. DeGaule said he wanted all US military out of France as soon as possible. Rusk responded, "Does that include those who are buried here?" DeGuale did not respond. You could have heard a pin drop. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When in England , at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of 'empire building' by George Bush. He answered by saying, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return." You could have heard a pin drop. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying, "Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?" A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?" You could have heard a pin drop. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, "Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?" Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, "Maybe it's because the Brit's, Canadians, Aussie's and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German." You could have heard a pin drop. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE... Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. "You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked sarcastically. Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously. "Then you should know enough to have your passport ready." The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it." "Impossible. Americans always have to show their passports on arrival in France !" The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained, ''Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to." more

Voting Question: why are we letting non americans like canadians and english and french visit cuba and not arresting them?

yeah i watched a travel documentary on cuba the other night the foriegners are sunning themselves on teh beaches in castros so called paradise, i saw interviews with them, they had english, swedish, australians, french and spanish all spending money in cuba, visiting cuba buying rum adn cigars. yet they get away with this. do these people not understand that visiting cuba is against the law? visiting cuba according to the website carries a prison term of five years and alot of fines yet these people are just visiting their and buying every thing they can without worrying about getting arrested. why is no one cracking down on these people. it is a crime to visit cuba and buy cuban stuff so why am i seeing all these people from the european and canadian countries visiting the island and violating the law. i guess they love anything that screws the USA. more

Resolved Question: Bought a new ring for my pierced belly button - sterilising/cleaning help!?

So, i bought a new ring for my belly button. I've had it 6 months and have changed it before so i know what to do :), but this belly button ring wasn't bought at a professional piercing place or anything, but at City Beach (a surf shop). So it may not have been properly cleaned. I don't have any special cleaning alcohol or anything so what could i use to ensure that its clean and no infection can enter? Is it just a matter of warm soapy water for my hands and washing the piercing in hot water, will the hot water ruin or rust the piercing as it was cheap for a bellybutton piercing ($20 australian) Thanks in advance!!! more

Voting Question: Which Australian movie is this?

I can't remember much. All I remember is there was a teenage girl and her little brother. The girl makes out with a man, while the little boy drowns at the beach. She doesn't get there in time, and she can't resurrect him. Anyone know what film this is? It might've been on ABC, or SBS, a few years ago. For some reason, I get it confused with the movie of The Shark Net, but i doubt it's the same thing. more

Resolved Question: Girls (middle and high school only) would you date a boy who wears Ugg boots?

Hi ladies, My names Geoff, Im almost 15,5'8", 145lbs,blonde hair, blue eyes, medium built, I surf and skateboard, Im originally from Australia (living in the states now since 2008) and I wear Australian Ugg boots like Beach Feet,Emu Australia, Whoogas, Australian Aura. Basically I grew up wearing Ugg boots on the beach in the summer and out in the winter time. I think there sweet and I think girls look hot wearing them. What do you say? Would you date a boy who wears Ugg boots? ps: if i knew how to post a pic of me wearing my Ugg boots I would but i don't know how.someone suggested photobucket, so im gonna either add some pics or repost the question.im from australia and boys wear Uggs all the time, its not weird or doesnt mean ur gay or anything.im just trying to figure out american girls i guess. more

Resolved Question: Why are American girls into labels (like UGG boots) and into stereotypes?

Im gonna be 15, from Australia, a boy and I wear UGG boots. I surf and wear them on the beach with board shorts or outside when its cold. Ive worn UGG boots all my life. Real UGG boots aren't made in China like most American girls are lead to believe. Just because a boot says UGG AUSTRALIA look at the label inside of the boot. If it says made in China its most definately a fake pair of UGG boots. UGG boots were originally made for men and boys and worn on the farms as work boots and on the beaches after surfing. In World War 1 pilots wore UGG boots to stay warm, they were called FUGGs (short for flying UGGs). In the United States girls call fake UGGs FUGGs but most of those girls are wearing made in China UGGs so they are actually wearing the FUGGs. So why is it that girls in the states think boys who wear UGGs are gay? Boys have been wearing UGGs since the 1930's in Australia.Guys in the states started to wear them in the 1970's.Girls started to wear them in the 1990's in the states. Im a straight boy with a hot girlfriend and I wear UGG boots. So does that mean Im gay? If you want real Australian made UGGs try these brands: BEACHFEET, EMU,AUSTRALIAN AURA,30-BELOW, WGOOGLA, (not sure of the right spelling) . more

Resolved Question: what caused the tsunami to happen?

Large waves began moving through the ocean, away earthquakes epicentre, the tsunami journey had begun. It took 15 minutes to reach Sumatra. Where this happens is called the subduction zone. On 26th December 2004 the biggest earthquake for 40 years occurred. In deep water the tsunami moved at up to 50mph. When it reached shallow water near coastal areas, the tsunami slowed to 50 but increased in height, from 1-2 metres out to sea to 10m on the beach. This is why tsunami waves are hard to spot until they near land. The quake triggered a series of large waves-that spread thousands of kilometres over several hours. Earthquakes happen when the plates that make up the Earth's surface suddenly move. The heavier oceanic Indo Australian plate moves under the lighter continental Burma plate. The tsunami formed when energy from the earthquake moved the sea bed up by 15 metres. Moving hundreds of cubic metres of water. At a destructive plate boundary plates move towards each other. more

Resolved Question: my new australian bf is a bit odd and not as affectionate as me?

It's like, he can be very affectionate at times, holding and petting my hand, hugging me etc... But for example this weekend we went to the beach, and I felt a bit distant from him, he would still smile and look at me, but we went into the water and he swam all the way out and I stayed back( I told him I was afraid to go out too far)...we don't see each other from Mon-Thur, I would think he would try to spend as much time with me as he could. This weekend we stayed at his mum's place and it was nice and everything, but always I felt he never really tried to include me into anything, I felt like a stranger to him. he would still hug me, kiss me...but we've only been together for about 2 weeks, I think it's too early to get out of the lovely-dovey stage...(I'm 20 he's 22)... more

Resolved Question: Please help I can't keep making excuses!!!?

Its coming into the Australian summer which means it gets stupidly hot which means trips to the beach and swimming and the issues have already started. The guy im half with wanted me to go swimming at the pool with him on the weekend but i kept making excuses and in two weeks all the students in the year (with the exception of me and my group) are going to a nearby water amusement park. I would love to go, it would be so much fun but i can't. And as I said its coming into summer so we're going to be having trips to the beach to cool down. By now you're probably going, why the hell can't you swim if you think its gonna be fun!? Just put your swimmers on and jump in!....... I can't. I'm bulimic (anorexic for two year before hand). Enough said? I can't stand to wear swimmers and have people look at me. My usual excuse is that i just don't like water. And I stick by that. I don't like water. It unstraightens my hair so I look stupid and requires swimmers which show my body to everyone! I need to find a way to go swimming despite this because I promised the guy im sorta with that i'd go swimming with him this weekend coming!!!!! Please help me! P.S Im not going to go and 'get help' and im not telling anyone. Please dont tell me i should talk to someone I do not want to. I just need to find a way to swim. more

Voting Question: middle eastern men do they want their cake?.....?

Do they want their cake and eat it too? I find my man is always looking to hot bikini clad girls, as all men do. But in our relationship he likes me to be modest and sexy to him,( i am arab/aust) he tells me that all white women are good for looking at and maybe for sex but thats about all but i find that offensive because no one should be talked about like that, im also half australian, born & grew up here and he just needs to accept the culture here and thats just what people are like and to us thats acceptable.Being in a few arab countries i have seen much much worse women and alot of them are so promiscious, everyones humping someone.Im sick of him getting that vision in his head that arab women are perfect and dont ever do no wrong! i think he dreams to be with a white woman. Im thinking of taking my hijab off sometimes, which it i hate to say but im not too overly religious, i had my early years partying like all youngens but marrying a religous man made me need to be more modest to fit into his community....and he thinks im more than beautiful with it... and im allowed to wear tight skinny leg jeans and stillettos and i get my hair done every month, he lovesss my jet black hair..... but he prefers to cover my hair more than anything and his friends have never seen me without it, he tends to hide me away from his friends even when he shows women pics of me on the computer, But i think about putting a bikini on and walking the beach, i mean afterall thats what he goggles at? I sick of him googling every women how looks hot! What do you think bout that?! Oh he's Saudi and the best sweetest husband to me, he loves me too much :)I dont think its fit to say that he is using me, we dated before we married for one year..he seen me without the veil i never used to wear it, he said right now he wants to keep his wife to himself, fair enough, weve been married for some years i am happy, he works hard to give me my house and anything i want he is affectionate at all times no different from you and your wifes, and he is just fun loving as anyone else i just want to know from another arab in particular why do you pop eyes at a beauty girl, then want your wife to cover up..but any opinions is appreciated, thanks!! more

Resolved Question: Would you a bite a dog that was attacking your own dog ?

Melbourne, Nov 11 (IANS) A man bit a dog in an Australian beach to save his own dog from being mauled to death. Phillip Lane, a resident of Clifton Springs in Victoria, said he was walking his two-year-old dog Buddy with his wife Linda on Collendina beach at about 4 p.m. Monday, when a large, brown dog ran up and snatched their little dog in its jaws. 'It grabbed our dog, threw him to the ground and had him by the neck,' Geelong Advertiser quoted Lane as saying Wednesday. Lane said he tackled the attacking dog and tried to forcibly unclamp its jaws with his hands. Then, with one hand in the attacker's mouth and another around its neck, he resorted to the most desperate of measures. He said: 'I thought, 'if you're not gonna let go, I'm gonna bite your ear off' ... I ended up biting him on the ear as hard as I could.' The bite stunned the attacker, which released Buddy who was taken away by its owner. http://in.news.yahoo.com/43/20091111/902/twl-man-bites-dog-in-australia.html more

Resolved Question: How do you feel about a dog on lead growling at your dog?

I really wasn't sure how to word this, so let me explain. We're still working through Josie's fear-based aggression, and every now and then a dog being walked on the other side of the street will get her anxious and she sometimes does tense up and start growling/barking. It happens a lot at the beach, she has very mixed emotions when going to the beach, she's over-the-top excited about running with us and swimming in the waves, but I think the amount of other dogs and people there, not to mention so much open space, all plays a part in her outward behavior. Of course, other dog owners who have behaved dogs (notice I didn't say well behaved) will give occasional dirty looks or strange glances at my dog for doing so, and I don't really know what to say or if I should apologize, or what the person even expects me to say. Josie is a year and a half australian shepherd / lab mix. Her nervousness shows through shaking, heavy panting, and vocalizing. Because of two recent dog attacks (while on lead) she's weary of other dogs while being walked (the attackers got off leash, I guess). When properly introduced to dogs off leash she does fine, and with regular introductions to different dogs she is making excellent progress in learning that she doesn't need to be afraid. I know it's mostly a confidence issue, and we're working on that too, but that's not the point of this post. I've been on the receiving end of a dog barking at my dogs, and when the people apologize I tell them no need, I understand completely. I usually apologize out of habit, or say "sorry, she gets nervous around other dogs" but I'm not really sure this is the best answer, and when people give my dog a hate stare I don't think I should apologize because they have a bad attitude. Tonight I am walking them while we go trick or treating, and in case other people will have their dogs with them I figured I'd ask. Josie went walking with me last year (but she was 6 months old, all puppy) and to costume parties, so she's okay around costumes, and so is Zoey who had a ball last night at an outdoor costume party. Except for barking at random zombie props and being freaked out by the blow up costumes, haha. Thanks for any answers! more
