Open Question: Is Santa Monica safe for a young girl travelling alone? What about things to do?

I'm from Australia and I'm heading to the US mid September - I'm spending a little under two days in LA. This is my first time travelling alone and my first time travelling in the USA. I thought that a Santa Monica hostel might be the best place to stay considering my circumstances (I won't be able to hire a car either) - what do you think? Is it safe for a female solo traveller? Do you think the weather will be good enough to stay by Santa Monica beach? I'd appreciate any advice as to how to spend my time in LA as well - I arrive early afternoon on the 15th, and leave in the morning of the 17th. Obviously it isn't much time at all, so I'm not too sure how to allocate it. Thank you! more

Voting Question: what is Woy Woy like as a place to live?

Hi there I'm thinking of moving to Woy Woy for cheaper rent so I can save money to get rid of my credit cars for a home deposit. I'm thinking Woy Woy as the rent is within what I can afford to pay and is not too far to travel to work in North Sydney each day. I am getting mixed messages about the place, some say it's great others say there is a lot of drugs and crime. I will be a single girls living on my own so want to be safe. Currently living in Marrickville which has also been known for drugs and crime, however I feel fairly safe here. Would it be about the same in Woy Woy as here in Marrickville? I'd love to be near the beach again, and my dogs would love to have a yard bigger than that in inner Sydney Opinions of what Woy Woy is like as a place to live greatly appreciated Oh just incase people are wondering what Woy Woy is, it is a town on the Central Coast of NSW Australia Bek more

Resolved Question: Where to stay in Perth?

Which place is the best one to stay (top three maybe?) in Perth, Australia? (I mean like neighborhood) We are looking for the best place for 17 year olds. We want a beautiful place that has great beaches, is safe, has a good night life, and has many people our age (friendly). Beaches and night life are really important since we are looking forward to a really fun trip. But so is everything else. I don't really know much about Perth, so please explain. Thank you very much. Resolved Question: Why is the U.S. so expensive?

Okay, don't get me wrong I am an American but unlike most Americans I have traveled the world and have had a huge awakening.Remember the world is a book and those who don't travel only read one page.I see these people on TV talking about the U.S. being #1 one and if you ask most Americans they will say it outright without a doubt that America is #1.It's Like asking the question is almost foolish. My question is,do Americans think that in schools around the world are teaching their students to believe that America is the best country? If you think so you are not thinking correctly.Just like my friends from Australia,Norway,Sweden,UK,Canada etc....have said to me"Don't you think that we are all taught that our countries are the best in the world?'I have lived in Thailand for 6 years and it is far from perfect but in other ways it's close to paradise.I came home last year to California and could not believe how expensive everything is and I want to know why.In Thailand I can stay in a beautiful hotel on the most beautiful tropical beaches in the world and pay between 10 to 25 dollars a night.A Coke cost about 25 cents here, cigarettes about a dollar and expensive food is 8 or 9 dollars, cheap food can be under a buck for a complete meal.My rent for a fully furnished nice house w/exotic fruit trees, fish pond, built in bbq in a beautiful subdivision w/ private security, restaurants even a French one,Olympic swimming pool, shops, tennis courts,B.B. courts all for $115.00 a month. When I was in LA a Coke was 2 bucks and my hotel was 150 a night.I go to the store and buy a few things and $25.00 was gone.In Thailand I can eat for days and days on $25.00.When I walked and drove around America the only thing I could feel was anger and animosity towards the U.S. government for letting the American people get ripped off so bad.If you've never left the country then all is normal for you but when you see how cheap the world really can be and how in many ways European countries(even though expensive) have far batter systems(to a degree) than America has it makes you see America in a new light and it makes you angry. more

Resolved Question: Looking to travel to Thailand, need tips?

Ok so this might get a little long so if you take the time to read it and offer and tips or stories or anything at all I'd appreciate it a ton! So I am looking to do some traveling. I have had some friends recently do the same and by the looks of it they had the times of their lives, some still refuse to come home claiming they are in "paradise". For me I would like to possibly go to Australia for a little bit but what I really want is to eventually make my way to Thailand for a long stay because I hear it is so cheap there is you are smart about it. I have seen pictures of my friends of them living in little tiny hut looking places right on the beach for what they claim is $3 a night. How would I find a place like this. My basic question is how much money would I need to have saved up to spend a solid 3 or maybe more month in Thailand. Im thinking $5000- $6000 could possibly last but again, I really have no idea. I am prepared to live a not so luxury life there, if I have food and all the basics one needs with a beautiful surrounding I will be fine. I really just want to escape life here for a good amount of time and enjoy it. Another question is where about in Thailand is the best place to go, places that are beautiful yet safe. Is there much for hostels in Thailand ( although I would really like to experience living in one of these little bungalows or huts on the beach for a bit). As for Australia from my understanding it a lot more expensive so that is why I would just like to stop there for a few weeks and then just relax in different places in Thailand. My goal so far is going traveling with $5000-6000, but like I said I have no idea how long that could even last me. Please if anyone has tips for me, or stories on their traveling experiences and costs and places etc. I would appreciate it soo much, let me know if some of my ideas seem stupid or anything. I am looking to leave in the next 5-6 months hopefully and like I said, I would like to spend atleast 2 -3 months if not more. Also another thing, would it be worth getting a working visa or w.e you call them incase I'd like to work a little either in Australia or Thailand to make some extra money if I needed to. Again fill me up with any and all kinds of information!! thank you! more

Resolved Question: I want to emmigrate from Scotland but not 100% where to?

I come from a small village in Scotland and I want to move abroad, preferably somewhere with an overall sunny and warm climate (but I can handle the cold I just don't like this almost eternal greyness we have in Scotland even during the summer. I'm going to be doing a tourism course at college so hopefully that will help. I've kind of narrowed it down to Australia, California or Canada ( I know that Canada is cold but I heard that they have good summers while in Scotland not so much and I just like the idea of living there). There's a lot to think about over choosing where and then if you should emigrate I just want some info on these 3 places. Would Australia and Canada be easier to move to because they're part of the British Commonwealth? Are Australia and California as good as they're meant to be? (I hear that Australians aren't so nice to immigrants. LA is meant to have a lot of crime, bad traffic, public transport and pollution) How expensive would it be to live there (I know I wouldn't be living right on a beach or somewhere like Santa Monica but I'm not wanting to move to some wasteland.) I've to study a language at college and I have an A at French and have done some Spanish obviously with Canada having French as an official language and California having a latin base it would be handy to learn 1 of these. But I'd prefer to do French would that be a huge waste if I moved to California and worked in Tourism? What's your thoughts on particular places i.e LA, San Diego, San Jose, Melbourne, Sydney Montreal, Toronto etc And Finally (I think) which place would be gay friendly (I know there is no guarantee of prejudice but you know what I mean) I know I'm asking a lot but if you have anything that would help me I would appreciate it a lot. more

Resolved Question: If it's winter in Australia right now, is it snowing?

Are they far enough away from the equator for snow? Australia is often depicted with tan, healthy people playing on the warm beaches, so it's hard for me to imagine what winter would be like there. (I'm in the Northern hemisphere.) And it's especially hard for me to imagine winter in July. more

Resolved Question: Why do Asians and Muslims keep bringing up the race card?

Fact 1: Australia is NOT a racist nation, all ethnics are allowed to have the same opportunities here in Australia. If an Asian guy is poor because he plays too many poker machines, it has nothing to do with RACE. Fact 2: A few years ago, a group of Muslims started a public demonstration because the government did not allow them to construct a Muslim school for middle eastern children. This is NOT about racism, this is about RESOURCES and ETHICS. The government can't fund everything, and they can't allow one culture to dictate other people's lives. Fact 3: Some Muslims at the beaches were complaining about young girls wearing bikinis in public. COME ON guys!!! you ARE living in AUSTRALIA, this is NOT Lebanon or Saudi Arabia. Australians SHOULD NOT wear heavy clothing when they are swimming at a beach on a sunny day. They are just wearing LESS clothing. HOWEVER they are not NAKED. This is a free country and nobody can change that. Fact 4: International students were complaining about youth allowance and concession cards. LOOK!!! Local students pay taxes, they support THIS country. But YOU international students have no support for our country, you may support our universities but none of your money supports our government. WHY should our government give you cheap bus tickets if you offer them nothing in return??? Ok, if you've read all that, then please tell me what do you think? more

Resolved Question: where are some relatively non-crowded beaches in Australia in February?

I've always wanted to have a beach party for my birthday (February) but its always too cold then to do it where I'm from. So I say screw North America's February climate rules and take a trip Down Under :) So where are some places to go that aren't overly crowded at that time of the year? more

Resolved Question: How much money should I bring with me to Australia for 3 weeks of holiday?

Hotels, domestic flights, and international flight have already been paid for so all I'm taking is spending money. I'm not a big shopper, I use a flask when I go out at night lol, and we are going to do a lot of beach days. We will be in Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland, and Cairns. How much money do you think I should bring? $1k per week or more or less? and if it matters I live in the USA :) Thanks in advance for answering my questions. more

Resolved Question: Where is the best place to live in Australia?

Ok so following up on my last question: Where is the best place to live in Australia? I believe there is territories isn't there? If so, I'd like to be in a place not completely isolated from everyone, but also not necessarily in the city. Preferably a place pretty civilized, and plenty of people. I would also love to be near beaches and beautiful scenery. I have to be in a place where I can find a job (undecided so far, but I'm leaning towards something in sports medicine.) Thanks and sorry for being so picky! more

Resolved Question: Which university/city in Australia is best for studying abroad?

I've been looking at unis for months and just can't narrow down a best choice for studying abroad. I've heard good things and bad things about each city, but I guess it would help to say specifics. I know I want to go to Australia definitely, because I heard the people are amazing from a friend who studied abroad at James Cook University in Townsville. I'm looking to study abroad in a city or town that is close to beaches (I LOVE the coast), has a great food/cafe reputation, a mild/warm/hot weather, and of course, most affordable living and tuition costs (slightly tight budget). My major is similar to environmental engineering. These are our college's partner universities: University of Newcastle Deakin University Victoria University Bond University And here are other options I've highly considered for their price: Murdoch University Griffith University Flinders University University of Tasmania Macquarie University James Cook University University of the Sunshine Coast I need help deciding which one of these universities is right for me. I'm about to go into my third year of college. more

Resolved Question: Are Australians generally fond of Canadians and other questions?

I'm Canadian, and would love to travel, possibly live in Australia at some time in my life, and part of the reason is the similarities between the two countries. However, what I really want to hear now is what Australians or immigrants to Australia think of the country, so I can get a bit of the truth and away from some of the stereotypes. I've also heard that usually you guys can't tell the difference between American and Canadian. Well I don't blame you, unless you're really listening for that 'eh?'. And I can't tell a Kiwi from an Aussie, because it's not like I meet them both every day. Some other things I've sort of heard are that women are not quite as feminine, it's a very male-dominated society (perhaps a bit heavier than Canada), perhaps making it harder for women to get the same jobs/treatment as men, lots of drinking and parties, and are very competitive. I know of course that not ALL Aussies are like this, because they are stereotypes, but I want to know how much of it is true, and perhaps if you weren't quite like it (i.e. didn't drink a whole lot) would you stand out quite sorely? Also, how varied is your 'pop music'. Is it virtually US pop stars, or is it quite mixed genre on say a pop station? On the coastal cities, do people really show up to work wearing surf's and then change? Is the beach really that common of a 'pass time'. And I think people have got to be kidding saying that you wear pants in the winter, when it hardly goes below freezing! Well, I'd understand sometimes, but in some parts that seems absurd. And one more! I know Vancouverites are always complaining that it is so expensive, and I've heard that Oz is quite expensive to live in as well. I know CAN vs AUS dollar is basically the same, but even within Canada, it's more expensive in one part of the country than the other. So would you say you are more on the expensive side? I know it will be in more urban areas, but let's say in a suburb (like Wollongong may be an example?) Answer as many as you can/like, and I appreciate your time! more

Resolved Question: What is the most spectacular ceremony you have ever witnessed ?

Melbourne, July 13 (ANI): Wedge-tailed eagles are now the latest accessories at weddings in Gold Coast, Australia. According to the Gold Coast Bulletin, a wedge-tailed eagle has been trained to swoop down the aisle over the heads of astonished guests to deliver the wedding rings to the best man or groom. "Ten years after you've been to a wedding you won't remember the food that you ate, but you will remember if an eagle flew in," News.com.au quoted Zanna Carey from Broadwings Events as saying. The eagle can perform its fly-in trick at weddings in churches, on beaches or in garden locations, and the rings are clipped to leather straps tied to its legs. All the best man or groom has to do is raise a gloved hand with a scrap of meat in it at the right moment during the ceremony, and the handler releases the bird. Voting Question: What can you tell me about the VW New Beetle?

I've been looking into VW Beetles, I really wanted an old one, but I don't think the car would suit my lifestyle. So, I am looking at the New Beetle. I would be getting one second hand so it's won't be a brand new one. Are there any particular years of the new beetle bad news? Do any of them have certain common problems with them? Oh, and I will be looking to get the convertible/cabriolet version. I live on the gold coast in australia, in the city, which also has a beach. I will mostly be driving to and from work (peak hour traffic). I know convertibles are noisier (because of the roof) and I'm ok with that. I don't drive on dirt roads or on the beach, just city and suburban streets/roads. I will probably be getting an early 2000 version (around 2000 - 2006) since I probably won't be able to afford one of the newer models, unless I find a good deal. Thanks for your help!I don't want personal opinions, whether you think the car is good or not - just actual FACTS please :-) more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my alternative Australian flag design?

I'm not saying that Australia should become a republic or that if we did we should change our current flag. I do like and respect our current flag. However if we did what would you think of this becoming the national flag? http://i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a403/andrewducrichardson/AustralianFlag Republica.jpg Blue: Represents the ocean. Red: Represents red soil of Australia. White: Represents the white sand beaches of Australia. Black: Is just awesome. Alternatively the colours red, white and blue represent the blood, sweat and tears, respectively, that have shaped our nation. The seven stars represent the six states, and the seventh represents all of Australia's territories. The Crux seems a necessity to the design. In another version there was the boxing kangaroo in the upper left hand corner. I also wanted to include a rising sun to the design but thought it would make the design look to hectic. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Some good photoshoot ideas?

I live in Australia near the beach and I have between two and four models at my disposal (all girls age 16 or 17). So we've been considering a few ideas but we aren't really sure what to do besides just dressing in nice clothes/dresses and taking shots and I was hoping for a plan or theme I could base it on... any ideas? This will give you a rough idea of where I'll be shooting, this is where I live: http://www.wollongong.net/wollongongphoto4.jpg more

Resolved Question: Should I go on a camp?

yeah I'm just asking this 'cause I'm bored... but next holidays I'm thinking about going on a "camp" for a week, I haven't been on a non-school camp for years.. although it's not long, I'll know no-one, plus it is a christian camp... My next holidays are only 2 weeks, so I'd be on camp for half of them.. but my mum works everyday, so it's not like I can do anything anyway... this is what the website says, " full of heaps of activities, electives and surprises to MAXXimise your September Holidays. Electives include Laser Force, Go-Karting, Surfing, 10 Pin Bowling, Extreme Fishing, Shopping, heaps of time at the beach and a Dance Party with the works. Experience awesome community, meet great people, and ponder some of life's big questions " thoughts? I'm 15, and live in Australia. the camp is for year 8,9,10,11 and 12...haha year 12 is like 12th grade.. like 17 or 18 more

Resolved Question: New Zealand? England? Australia? Relocation ideas...?

Alright, I am totally convinced America sucks. I won't go into a full-blown rant about how far we have fallen off as a society, but I want to know about some of the other English-speaking nations in the world.. New Zealand, England, areas of Australia... or wherever else you might suggest.. I'm young, male, single, big drinker, fun-loving... and would DEFINITELY prefer a warmer climate, near the ocean, beaches, and all of that nonsense. Of course I'd prefer a location with plenty job opportunities and nicer, more open minded population. I guess I'm more of a comfort-over-style type. So, I'm not necessarily looking for cosmopolitan, although I'm not totally opposed to it... Definitely looking for a melting pot.. As close to utopia an English-speaking nation can get, I guess.. more
