Any thoughts ?
Hi again. I seem to have boats on the mind today, as I type this from mine somewhere on the Avon. I think that I know precisely where I am, but the stupid sat-nav, which is superfluous to requirements sometimes says turn left when I am in no position to do so. It might end up at the bottom if it is not carefull ! But that is not what I was going to say. The mysterious sinking ski-boat. In the Mid-East, off the coast of Oman, I heard shouts for assistance from a motley crew on an 18 ft boston. The thing had an over-rated Johnson 225hp outboard, 8 people with cold boxes etc, etc. I thought that it looked a bit low in the water, about 1/2 a mile offshore, but it was clearly getting lower, with water starting to lap over the gunwhales. I was operating the company Rotork, a twin Volvo Penta landing craft type thing, so popped over to see what was what. I could not winch it aboard, as it simply weighed too much Dang, I found that the drainage bung had come adrift, so the bilge was mostly water. Only thing to do was to get everyone onto the Rotork, and speedily tow it back to the yacht club. This was met with some amazement, as a landing craft pitched up on the beach outside the bar / restaurant thing. The Boston behind then gracefully sunk in 6ft of warm water. Oh well, you don't win 'em all ! Any more boatie tales ? moreResolved Question: Can you suggest new means of entertainment in Muscat- Oman?
In (Muscat) Oman -in the middle east- there aren't many entertainment options besides the basics. These include Camping at the beaches/desserts, Cinemas, Paintball, bowling allies, clubbing, spas, dining and such. In the capital (muscat) 68% of the population are between ages 18-30 and basically, we need to create or introduce something new. Introduction Background: Definition Field Listing The Trucial States of the Persian Gulf coast granted the UK control of their defense and foreign affairs in 19th century treaties. In 1971, six of these states - Abu Zaby, 'Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Ash Shariqah, Dubayy, and Umm al Qaywayn - merged to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They were joined in 1972 by Ra's al Khaymah. The UAE's per capita GDP is on par with those of leading West European nations. Despite largely successful efforts at economic diversification, nearly 40% of GDP is still directly based on oil and gas output. Since the discovery of oil in the UAE more than 30 years ago, the UAE has undergone a profound transformation from an impoverished region of small desert principalities to a modern state with a high standard of living. The government has increased spending on job creation and infrastructure expansion and is opening up utilities to greater private sector involvement. In April 2004, the UAE signed a Trade and Investment Framework Agreement with Washington and in November 2004 agreed to undertake negotiations toward a Free Trade Agreement with the US. The country's Free Trade Zones - offering 100% foreign ownership and zero taxes - are helping to attract foreign investors. Higher oil revenue, strong liquidity, housing shortages, and cheap credit in 2005-07 led to a surge in asset prices (shares and real estate) and consumer inflation. Rising prices are increasing the operating costs for businesses in the UAE and adversely impacting government employees and others on fixed incomes. Dependence on oil and a large expatriate workforce are significant long-term challenges. The UAE's strategic plan for the next few years focuses on diversification and creating more opportunities for nationals through improved education and increased private sector employment. The UAE population has an unnatural sex distribution consisting of more than twice the number of males than females. The 15-65 age group has a male(s)/female sex ratio of 2.743. UAE's gender imbalance is the highest among any nation in the world followed by Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and Saudi Arabia - all of which together comprise the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).[4] The GCC states are also what most South and Southeast Asians refer to as the Persian Gulf especially in context of emigration.[5] UAE has one of the most diverse populations in the Middle East.[6] 19 % of the population is Emirati, and 23 % is other Arabs and Iranians [7]. An estimated 85 percent of the population is comprised of non-citizens, one of the world's highest percentages of foreign-born in any nation. In addition, since the mid-1980s, people from all across South Asia have settled in the UAE. The high living standards and economic opportunities in the UAE are better than almost anywhere else in the Middle East and South Asia. This makes the nation an attractive destination for Indians, Filipinos, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis along with a few thousand Sri Lankans. In 2006, there were approximately 2.15 million Indian nationals, Philippines Nationals—OFW, Bangladeshi nationals, and Pakistani nationals in the UAE, making them the largest expatriate community in the oil-rich nation.[8] Persons from over twenty Arab nationalities, including thousands of Palestinians who came as either political refugees or migrant workers, also live in the United Arab Emirates. There is also a sizable number of Emiratis from other Arab League nations who have come before the formation of the Emirates such as Egyptians, Somalis, Sudanese and other Gulf Arab states, who have adopted the native culture and customs. Further, Somali immigration also continued in the 1990s as a result of the Somali civil war. The UAE has attracted a small number of very affluent expatriates (Americans, British, Canadians, Japanese, Chinese and Australians) from developed countries who are attracted to a very warm climate, scenic views (beaches, golf courses, man-made islands and lucrative housing tracts in Abu Dhabi and Dubai), the nation's comparably low cost of living (but in 2006, thousands of real estate properties are valued over millions of dollars) and tax-free incentives for their business or residency in the UAE. They make up under 5 percent of the UAE population; mainly English-speaking. Expatriates adhere to the law and customs of the UAE, their adopted country. The most populated city is Dubai, with approximately 1.6 million people. Other major cities include Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Sharjah, and Fujairah. About 88% of the population of the United Arab Emirates is urban.[9] The remaining inhabitants live in tiny towns scattered throughout the country or in one of the many desert oilfield camps in the nation. moreResolved Question: March luxury beach holiday from London w/10mth old?
Hello! Does anyone have suggestions as to how we can get away from London to get some sunshine in early March? As we have a 10 month old, we don't want to go too long haul, so Asia is definitely out, even the Indian ocean would be difficult. Ideally we'd love a small, boutique type place. We prefer something like a villa or a beach hut to a large hotel. And the killer, we NEED babysitting services, as it would be great to have a little time alone - something that is so rare! We have considered Oman and Dubai, but it seems to be predominantly mega resorts... Our budget is reasonable, given our demands...Perhaps I should clarify, it must be WARM enough to sunbathe, maybe even swim in the ocean, snorkel, etc... moreResolved Question: All inclusive holiday with Spa - Recommendation please?
We are looking for an all inclusive lie on the beach holiday for end October hopefully with a spa. Can't be adult only as this a mum/daughter (aged 14) trip! Just a week so we don't really want to be flying for too long although may consider Caribbean, Egypt, Oman, Dubai, etc. Want at least 4* resort I think - somewhere lovely for a real relaxing break for us both. Rapid response please. moreResolved Question: Not the run of the mill grub?
Hi Folks, just a thought. I seem to have travelled the planet a fair bit, and eaten all sorts of weird things. Seemingly all OK, or I would not be typing this. Well. snakes in Africa, camel & goat innards in Oman, a pigeon in Paris, kangaroo steaks in Oz, and dodgy kippers in Bournemouth. Oh, must mention the shot down grilled buzzard from the tin roof in some remote part of China. Most edible. I turned it into sandwiches. Then there is the thing that leapt onto the boat in the Red Sea. Gruesome it was, so I stamped on it, put it on a beach barbie, and it was said - "a fine fish" God knows what it was. Sort of a big red thing. So the Q is - what weird stuff to eat have you tried ? Without being ill... Bob moreTop Oman Beaches Links
