moreVoting Question: How come I wasn't attacked by mosquitoes?
So both sides of my family are Puerto Rican so every summer/christmas/springbreaks since I was 3 were spent over there in Puerto Rico. And every time I went there I would have to wear insect repellent all of the time because I would get bitten like crazy otherwise. One time we ran out and for two hours I didn't have any and got bitten 17 times during that short span of time! My families don't live in the city, my dad's side lives up in the mountains by Ciales and my mom's side of the family lives by the beaches in Aguadilla. Due to complications I haven't been there in two years and I went during Spring Break this year. I was there for 5 days and didn't even have to wear OFF Spray because I didn't get bitten once! Why did that happen?
moreResolved Question: How can I prevent myself from tanning?
I'm light skinned Puerto Rican so I'm pale if I get no sun, but REALLY tan if I do.
I'm going to be spending my whole summer at the beach and I want to enjoy myself in a bikini rather than have to cover up so I don't tan.
Is there anything I can buy that will COMPLETELY prevent me from tanning?
I don't even want a slight tan.
I want to stay pale because it looks a lot better with my hair color.
moreResolved Question: Do you agree with this Immigration policies have led nation to essentially 'import a poverty class?
This is in response to The Californian's March 24 editorial, "Immigration reform that helps growers, consumers, economy." I have no argument with the view that there could be intelligent immigration reform that could help growers, consumers and the economy. However, I have yet to see anything that comes close from Congress that could accomplish that worthy goal.
When it comes to immigration statistics, the numbers can be, and are, bent to support any position advocated. On this subject, Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, one of the most influential and powerful congressmen on Capitol Hill, stated, "We've been duped."
Let me toss out a statistic that I can only back up from personal experience and the best determination of hundreds of my colleagues in various roles with the former Immigration and Naturalization Service: Eighty-five percent of those granted amnesty under the last legislation meant for special agricultural workers did not qualify for that benefit; many had simply purchased a farm letter.
The bona fide applications for asylum are privately considered even less in numbers. In other words, as communicated to me by a humble Armenian immigrant years ago, "We imported a poverty class."
The "amnesty" bill was largely written by an INS regional bureaucrat who never met a payroll in his life, nor competed with foreign nationals for your business. Much of today's legislation is written and promoted for private gain by immigration attorneys who stand to make millions from a new amnesty.
The old amnesty legislation was sold to Congress and the American people with the emphasis that the federal government would get tough on employers hiring illegal aliens; isn't that the song they are singing today? Illegal immigration a hot topic at the time, but if you were to go to the extensive index of then-President Reagan's diary, you would not be able to find one entry or comment on immigration whatsoever.
At that time, the attorney general of the United States, while touring the Los Angeles federal building, leaned over and asked a supervisory detention officer, "Who do you work for, son?" "I work for INS," he answered. The attorney general whispered, "Is that one of mine?"
The INS commissioner at that time famously addressed New Yorkers in a speech: "The first thing I'm going to do is take care of the nasty Puerto Rican immigration problem!" Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens.
Eighty-eight thousand U.S. Department of Homeland Security workers and 200,000 DHS contractors simply cannot clean up the mess created from the last amnesty and now, at a time when our social services are strained to the breaking point, the prisons are releasing violent felons early, the job market is tanking, and The Californian's "view" is that the time couldn't be better for another amnesty?
Allow me to make the assertion that it is arrogant and jingoistic to assume that all immigrants are here for a "better life" or fled their native countries. Many I talked to can't wait to go home once they earn enough money. If money is the underlying reason for the immigration, isn't it a little shallow of us to assume that money alone is the answer to a better life?
If it is about the money, then let's make it fair for all. Let's clear the backlog of immigrants, hundreds of thousands of them who have been waiting for over 10 years to move legally from places all over the world to join up with family, obtain the job that will make their life better and embrace our laws, language and citizenship.

His opinions do not reflect U.S. government viewpoints, policy, directives or legal positions. Another View is a critical response to a Californian editorial, column or news story.

moreResolved Question: Who was that guest actress on Grey's Anatomy?
There was an episode where a woman was returning every 2 years (or so) for surgery (but I can't remember what for- possibly a tumor.) She came to the hospital and Derek Shepard came to see her. I guess they worked together at a different hospital.
At one point in their conversation she said "I was the only one at the hospital who was not in love with him (Derek.)" She also said that this surgery would be her last and she would live out her last two years on a beach in the tropics.
She had long black hair and a very heavy accent. Her voice also sounds like she smoked her whole life. She was possibly Spanish, Puerto Rican, Mexican- I'm not sure. Please someone help me!!!

moreResolved Question: Renewing of the Vows....Cheesy to do big?
Okay so the scenario is that my husband and I were married almost 10yrs ago now. We never had a wedding, we didn't even know our witnesses. I was young and he came down on orders and was desperately in love and wanted me to move with him, I wouldn't move if we didn't get married (he married me that Friday). Almost 10yrs later the rest is history, we now have 5 amazing children and are more in love than the first day we met, but there are so many times that we both look at other people's wedding photos and yearn for our own.
The ability to capture that deep love in that moment in time, the ability to have a wedding in front of God and bind our hands for eternity and to have all of his family there and all of my family there. Ultimately we want to do it in Florida on the beach and have our children walk down the isle first and then have us follow. One of the kids from his old Youth Group is now a Pastor and we want to have him marry us while we soak our feet in the ocean. No gifts or anything and just our children standing with us on an elegant but simple beach wedding, the wedding of our dreams. Oh the reception would be a big Puerto Rican Pig Roast on the waters in Florida, just like his family would do at home.
His family wants to do this (his sister is helping me plan it), he really wants to, my family thinks it would be amazing and my Daddy wants to see me marry him (as he's amazing friends with my dad) but I just wonder if it's Cheesy or silly to do this after 10yrs??
I guess I'm looking for validation? Any thoughts?Thank you everyone. We would not have any gift exchange and this is for family and friends and for us to be able to have a wedding. We never got that chance. So this would be for us to be able to have that wedding that we always dreamed of and include our children, we're planning on a cake, a reception a huge party (my family has never met his as they live on two different coasts) and of course a photographer so that we have something to hang in our home and truly capture that moment in time that we missed out on so long ago.

moreResolved Question: Good beach towns in Costa Rica?
Okay, I had been in Costa Rica for 6 weeks before and am going again for 5 weeks. I have already been to: Corcovado, Manual Antonio, Puerto Viejo (and Manzanillo), Cahuita, Isla Tortuga, Monteverde, Arenal, Poas.
Really, I just want to go somewhere now where I can enjoy a beach, enjoy the palms. And somewhere where it's safe to swim. I haven't looked at a Costa Rican map in a while, but what comes to my head is: Uvita (south of Dominical, I believe?), and Montezuma. Don't want to go to Jaco. Maybe Playa Flamingo on the West, but I'm not too excited for that, either. Samara, perhaps?
What are some nice beaches with less tourists?
moreResolved Question: My best friend was drowning and i could not do anything about it?
I had a dream in which i was looking out towards the beach and i saw one of my friends coughing i asked what had happend and he told that my other friends are in the water drowning so i swam out into the water and saved all of them so i thought and one was still out there. But i couldent go back out there because there was so much sharks in the water. So i just stood there crying and crying while my friend was drowning because there was nothing that i could do. Then when he drowned, i got images of him and his family he was a father of 2 kids (girls) and he was a very popular disk jockey, he was also hispanic (puerto-rican) but all my other friends were white. I just knew i seen myself later on sitting somewhere saying i should of went out there and saved him i dont deserve to live...
The funny thing is I dont know any of those pplz in my dream. And i dont have any friends with kids. And i cant swim for the life of me..
Can anyone shed some light on this weird dream that i had!

moreResolved Question: Best vacation spots - Caribbean?
My family and I are thinking of going to Puerto Rico because we're getting a good deal. I was really excited until I read some reviews - they said the puerto rican beaches are unswimmable. The reason they said this was because they have plants growing in them (?) not sure about that. Also they said it was rocky. Can someone who knows please tell me about the beaches in Puerto Rico. Activities for teens as well? thanks

my family is 100% puerto rican and we were all born in puerto rico and everyone in my family was all born with black hair, really tan, and dark brown eyes.

moreResolved Question: Miami vs Fort Lauderdale vs West Palm Beach vs Puerto Rico to move to?
My mom just got unemployed and is thinking about moving. She seems kind of depressed here in New Jersey. She wants to move to a nice area with life. So our fist guesses were south Florida or Puerto Rico. My mom is Puerto Rican and speaks Spanish very fluently, but I don't. I understand it, and I can speak the language, just my grammar's a little bit off, and I don't speak with speed. I'm 13 and I'm going to 9th grade next year. We were also thinking about South Florida. Somewhere hot as we're sick of having winter time and it's so dull over here. So how are the salaries down there, the cost of living, the difficulty of finding a job (in accounting specifically), which place is the best of the 4 listed, the cost of rent for a 3 bedroom apartment (or house), the nicest parts, which has the friendliest, lively people?, and etc. Will I be able to adjust easily to Florida? Nothing is set in stone, we just want to know.
moreResolved Question: Why do Puerto Ricans put their flag all over the place?
I've lived in New York for half my life now (mostly in Brooklyn) and I've noticed Puerto Ricans love to fly their flag more than any other immigrant and minority group. I've even seen them take a flag on a pole to the beach and post it right next to their beach umbrella. I have Puerto Rican neighbors in my building and they have a flag on their fire escape. I see Puerto Rican flags on cars, trucks, clothes... I don't see as much Dominican, Russian, Chinese, or Indian flags at all but that doesn't mean those groups don't like their country any less than Puerto Ricans.
I'm not asking to criticize or judge anyone. I've just always noticed this and have been really curious about it.

moreResolved Question: I found a puerto rican man living in my trunk what should i do?
hi
i park my car on the street at night, I live in Miami near the beach. Yesterday I went to my car and I found that my trunk was slightly open, so I shut it thinking I hit the button by accident the night before. As I drove to get some food I heard moaning sounds my car. I thought a bird or something got caught in the engine but that didnt really make any sense. Then as the moaning got louder i pulled over and found a puerto rican guy in my trunk, with a blanket sleeping in it. I told him to leave and he got out on the side of the road then i sped away. that was yesterday. Now this morning when I went out to my car my trunk was slightly raised again. This time I opened it to make sure it wasnt opening on its own or something and lo and behold the same puerto rican guy was in it, with a blanket and some soup cans. I told him to go away and leave my trunk alone. He left but I am concerned that he will come back tomorrow. Should I call the police or would that be too mean? Id rather just tell him not to come back without involving authorities.
Thanks

moreResolved Question: I love things from the past,do you?
I'm fourteen and love things from the past. I love the movie Romancing the Stone and the show The Facts of Life. I love an old, but unknown show called Marmalade Boy. I love to cry during old movies that are sad like Beaches. I love Celine Dion and The Cranberries. People think I'm weird for liking these things instead of modern things.DON'T get me wrong I watch Ugly Betty and Greek. But I do love the sense of class that older shows, movies and music had. Before filth was invented.i'm Puerto Rican nd people expect me to love raggaeton. I dont like it.And have you ever seen the stupid shows on MTV. All they do is make life look overly hard even though those people barely work. And they make hooking up with people and making out with a person you barely know accptable I especially hate thge dating shows. HELLO if they keep on breking up with the last winner and go on to make another season they'll never find love. Everyhting today is so fake and unromantic. I wish I was a teen of the 80's
moreResolved Question: why are haitian people so defensive, and think they're country isnt in need!?
Okay im having some major problems with my fiances family. They are full blown haitian people.. and iam spanish (from spain) and haitian and some puerto rican. I have never been exposed to my haitian roots..and dont much at all about haitain people. One day i was sitting down with my fiances sister and the subject of Haiti came up.. She asked me what i know about haiti and what my haitian friends have told me. I told her i only know things that are on the internet like most Americans.. haitian friends of mine have told me haiti is very poor and the people there are killing eachother in the streets.. most haitian people dont say too much good things about haiti! Hi guys. I am planning a future trip to Mexico. I live in Philadelphia. It will be me, my husband & 3 year old son. We are in our 20's. I can't spend alot of money, but like a regular trip on a budget is fine. I decided I would like to go to the Riviera Maya area of Mexico, but I don't want Cancun. I want to stay somewhere that tourists are welcome, but I dont want to be around alot of tourists. I want to see the non-tourist stuff & get a real feeling of the culture & area. I speak a good amount of spanish & my husband is fluent (were puerto rican), so thats not a problem. I want to go somewhere without a ton of American chain restaraunts & hotels, but I still need a few convieninces. I want a nice beach close by. & I want to see all the Mayan ruins. I dont want a huge party place, but a few local bar/grill type places would be nice. What are do you think is best for me?? Please help. ThanksWhat about Tulum or Cozumel? Anything else...Well Ive been to Tijuana & never had any problems..
moreResolved Question: Scholarships, how can I get some?
Im majoring Criminal Justice, my GPA is 2.7. I'm currently a senior and am graduating in June 2008. I am going to ITT Tech in Lake Mary, Florida. I've been accepted their, and start in Septemember. I plan to join the police force, most likely in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Department there is very nice and alot of active work.
I honestly am having problems finding scholarships and ways to earn them. I am Puerto Rican, Ecuadorian, Irish, Swedish. I've been working hard to find scholarships, i've done essays, surverys and nothing.... I am one of 3 kids, my brother is also in college and I have a younger brother in 1st grade. Im trying to get scholarships to make it easier for my parents cause they owe a lil bit of money around.. and any scholarships help.
Can anyone suggest or link places where I can apply for scholarships? I'm very dedicated to find these and become a Criminal Investigator.Yes I know its not the greatest GP.. im not asking for people to comment about me not being good enough, i'm asking if anyone can suggest sites where I can apply for scholarships.
moreResolved Question: Plse help me identify this song used in trailer for the Jennifer Lopez produced new movie " Feel the noise"
I have listened to the samples of the movie soundtrack, but not one song matches to this tune I'm looking for.
Please watch the trailer, the song starts playing when the airplane/Puerto Rican beach scene shots in. The voice is so Christina Aguilera, but I doubt it. I've also heard it on the F.M radio, and It looks like a top 40.

Thanx for helping, I'm in love with this song, would be pleased to know about the artist/song title so I could download it.
moreResolved Question: planning a vacation...?
I'm 20 years old and I want to plan a trip for my girlfriend and I to go to puerto rico next summer. We both turn 21 next summer and we are both puerto rican, so i think that will be a cool way to both celebrate our birthdays as well as explore and find out where our families and ancestors came from. Anyway, I just wanted to know how much should I realistically expect to spend on a 7 day trip. Including airfare, hotel rates, dinners, groceries, and of course any extra stuff like gifts or shopping. Does anyone know any good musemes, tourist attractions, clubs, beaches, etc that are can't miss spots.
Thanks.

moreResolved Question: Which do you like more, cubans or mexicans?
I was reading in the news about a "wet-foot dry-foot" policy in regards to immigrants from the border islands to FL. My question is that if a cuban, haitian or puerto rican manages to make it to the beach we give them a shot at citizenship. Using that principle, if mexican immigrants make it into the US we should give them an equal opportunity to attain citizenship. As things are it appears that we are discriminating against mexican immigrants.
How would the loophole work if illegals in this country just went to the beach, swam out then swam back in saying they just got here, then would that prove them worthy of citizenship?
