Washington Beaches Questions asked

Open Question: Aren't you glad Marie Antoinette 0baama is enjoying herself?

WASHINGTON — As the U.S. economy endures high unemployment and a jittery stock market, President Obama has preached sacrifice and fiscal discipline. But the pictures coming out of a sunsplashed Spanish resort this week may be sending a different message. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2012557439_mobama07.html Michelle Obama today faced a fresh wave of attacks over her lavish break in Spain with 40 friends, which could easily cost U.S. taxpayers a staggering £50,000 a day. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1300852/Spanish-police-close-public-beach-Michelle-Obamas-250k-Spanish-holiday.html#ixzz0w2N6LZTA more

Resolved Question: i'm not sure any more, help me?

i think my friend has changed. she has become really judgmental about people. and she complains about everything. now she only buys clothes from name brands. like yesterday we went to the beach and all she did was complain about how she hated it there and wanted to go home, and how she hated the sand because it was all over her which it really wasn't that bad, and the sun because she got a sunburn. so we left early and on the way home she asked if i wanted to stay the night again i already had the previous night and i couldn't take it anymore so i just told her i was tired and just ready to go home and sleep in my own bed. on the way home we went through a small town and she said "it would suck to live here" and i asked her why and she said "just look at the people who live here" i thought that was really mean of her to say and the people looked normal to me. the day before she was saying how she wanted a mountain dew shirt because some guy on tv was wearing one. but she said she would only wear it around the house never in public. she knows i wear those kind of shirts IN PUBLIC in fact i was wearing one then . so i asked her why and she said "i don't know id just rather wear something else" and then she told me "I advise you not to wear those to school" and pointed at my shirt. im still going to but i dont understand why she said that it hurt me but maybe im just over reacting. another time at the end of the school year our class took a five day trip to Washington D.C. and the whole time we wear there she hung out with her boyfriend and not me the only time we spent together was in the hotel room and she complained to me about her boyfriend and the whole time i was thinking why don't you just hang out with me then but she never did. even other people noticed. like one girl who im not really close friends with asked me if was okay because my friend kinda of ditched me for her boyfriend and she said she felt bad for me and we ended up hanin out more. i dont know if i want to be friends with her anymore. am i just being stupid or is she not a very good friend?sorry its really long :( more

I want a real name of a small town/village with population not more than 10,000 It is for my new story and I did little research but could not find any. Open Question: Best state for a student to live in?!?? Input is greatly appreciated!?

Ok, me and my best friend live in Green Bay, Wisconsin right now. Going to school. Granted its a very nice place to live, very safe here we just want to get out its boring, its more a family oriented town rather than a student area. Our goal is to be gone by next year. We need YOUR help with first off picking a state, once we have our state picked we'll ask to which areas to live in. We would prefer a place that is safe, stuff to do (beach, a clean bar atmosphere, etc.) Also most importantly affordable. We also wouldn't mind a more warm place, because lets face it Wisconsin winters are nothing to brag about. Her choices are: Washington, Texas, Nevada, North Carolina, Massachusets, Missouri, Virgina, New York, California. My choices are: Virgina, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, Arizona, Georiga. If you could please please please read through this and pick the best state out of MY choices and HER choices. And then pick the overall best choice. THANK YOU so much! more

Open Question: Which book should I read?

I have to read a book for social studies over the summer. I am very particular in my readinjg, and if a book is not just right, I will not be able to finish it and will resort to unsound methods like sparknotes or something. Anyway, there are almost 40 books on the list (sorry everyone), but I know I very much prefer fiction to nonfiction, I know I prefer anything post-1900 to anything before it (aside from war periods), the writing can't be too strange, and I would prefer it to be no more than, say, 300 pages at most. Here's the list. The author is written before the title. I know it's a lot of choices, but does anyone have any suggestions from past experiences or something. If you do, I'd greatly appreciate it. 1. Crane, Stephen: The Red Badge of Courage 2. Fischer, David Hackett: Washington's Crossing. 3. Ambrose, Stephen: Undaunted Courage 4. Beringer, Richard: Why the South Lost the Civil War 5. Cooper, James Fenimore: The Deerslayer 6. Goodwin, Doris: Team of Rivals 7. McCullough, David: 1776 8. McCullough, David: John Adams 9. Resolved Question: What are your thoughts on this?

Grand Isle, Louisiana Sitting on the Gulf of Mexico looking out into a vast coastline of small islands and thousands of acres of marshland gives you a great perspective as to just how difficult it will be to clean the incoming oil from plants, sand and animals of all types. The thick oil kills most everything it touches. In fact, we were instructed by Buggy Vegas’ employees at Bridge Side Marina to buy Dawn dish soap before leaving in our boat to tour the oil spill in case we touched the oil. “You have to get it off your skin immediately. It kills animals so just think what it will do to your skin,” one young captain told us. It’s clear that the marshes and fragile ecosystems are going to be destroyed when the oil hits them. But talking with local captains and fishing experts you begin to realize that the plants are not gone yet and we should be fighting to keep the oil from getting to shore. While there are plenty of new ideas, cutting-edge technology and thousands of interested volunteers, there is little access to the oil that is about to kill most everything in its path. While BP is responsible for the spill, the Obama dministration is responsible for denying access to those that want to help clean it up. Many American entrepreneurs and Midwest inventors are begging the Obama administration to allow them to get in the water and try out their ideas on how best to pick up crude oil from the salty ocean in and around Grand Isle, La. But the president and his administration says the oil spill is off limits to inventors and even the volunteers that want to help. And that means that some of the best ideas to pick up the oil, stop the oil or clean it up are not being used. The bureaucracy that has been created by BP and the federal government to hear ideas and inventions is like a reality show – with multiple rounds of tryouts and cuts and endless voting from secret judges. Most ideas are being tested in secret and under alternative conditions by the inventors themselves because access to the real oil spill is being denied. But local residents have listened to the out-of-towners and their big ideas more than the federal government has – and the locals want action. “If this was hitting the Florida beaches then Washington would be acting a lot faster,” said one frustrated resident. Dan Sinykin, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, runs Monterey Mills and is one of the many inventors eager to help. Sinykin spent a considerable amount of his own money to travel to the Gulf with his team to showcase his industrial fabric that grabs the oil once it touches it. A Monterey Mills video showing its fabric went viral on the Internet, catching the attention of the U.S. Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), singer/songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins and thousands of everyday Americans. To watch the video yourself, click here. In one day of touring, I spoke with six entrepreneurs from all over the country eager to prove that they could help. Every one of them had paid their own expenses to research and develop their product and personally invested in trips to multiple cities in and around the Gulf region to make their case. And none of them could actually get an official appointment with any decision maker. “I’ve had my application in with BP and the federal government for 60 days, I haven’t heard a thing,” said one frustrated inventor of a high tech oil skimmer. But what troubles the locals most is why people have to prove that they can help. Why not take assistance from wherever we can get it? And most importantly, why is the Obama administration deferring authority to BP? This oil spill is so massive that BP and the Obama administration should be asking -- moreover begging -- Americans for their ideas and time. Unfortunately, entrepreneurs and do-gooders are having to plead even for attention, much less to be able to help. We’ve been watching oil pour into the Gulf for 78 days now; isn’t it time President Obama got out of the way so American innovators can help solve the problem? more

Resolved Question: Where should we go on our road trip?

My friend and I are looking into going on a road trip around the entire country (united states). Literally...around. We haven't quite finished the route yet (as you'll see from the photo) but we are pretty certain on what cities we want to visit. This will be roughly a month long trip, so we'll need a lot to keep us busy while driving. Of course we haven't decided on everything and nothing is set in stone yet. So what I'm wondering is: What are some really cool places along the route we've made that we could stop and see along the way? Are there any really awesome towns that we should drive through or somewhere we should stop and visit? All input is welcome! The following is a list of the cities we have decided on so far: We're starting in Michigan: Pittsburgh Ardsley/Westchester, NY (my birth place) Washington, D.C. Ashburn, VA (family spot) Virginia Beach Fayetteville, NC (family spot) Myrtle Beach Orlando, FL Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood, FL (family spot) (We are NOT going to Key West) Destin, FL New Orleans Baton Rouge Houston Phoenix Los Angeles/Hollywood Las Vegas Portland Forks (Chyeah!) Seattle That's it so far. We still have to get home, but it's proving to be a bit difficult to find fun cities to visit on that part of the trip..yuck. Chicago is definitely on there though! Resolved Question: Are there any small towns near seattle?

I'm writing a book, and the setting was going to be in a town outside New York City, but I decided that it would be way too hot for my characters, who likes colder weather... Resolved Question: How to choose a college?

My emotions have been raging between where to go to college. One minute I see a movie with hot, fraternity black guys and I'm like " I wanna go to an historically black college". Then I read twilight and I'm like " I wanna move to Washington". Then I go to the beach and I'm like " I wanna move to California". Then after I've calmed down, I dont want to go there as bad. It sucks because I dont exactly have a preference for where I go to college. I just want to have fun and have a great experince and meet cool people. more

Resolved Question: Is it possible to be a Marine biologist in Seattle, Washington?

I love planning out my future. I've decided that I want to go to college and get a degree in biology, then move somewhere beachy and sunny, maybe Florida, to start off my career, and then move again to Seattle, Washington to settle down with my husband and family I've had by then, and continue my career. I'm just not sure if it would be OK/ possible to study marine life in Seattle, because I'm thinking that since it's close to Alaska, it wouldn't have beaches or warm ocean water or anything like that. I want to study dolphins, fish, and stuff like that. You'll probably just say, "Stay in Florida, there it has beaches and all", but I like Seattle. more

Resolved Question: where should i vacation next? It will be between March 12th and 20th 2011 and it will be in the US?

I drove out to the Grand Canyon in AZ and Las Vegas NV last year and two years before that I drove up to Minneapolis and did the Mall of America and saw a play at the Guthrie and the year before that I drove down to some tiny town on the ocean in Florida and went to the beach and this light house and some cool historic park thing and a bunch of coastal driving and stopped in Atlanta for a day or two and did some of the things there like the Zoo and CNN center and Olympic Park and the year before that I went down to Ft. Lauderdale and spent the week at the beach. I went to Washington D.C about 10 years ago and hit most of the sights there and loved it although it was a nonstop week as it was a planned out with a daily itinerary from 6am-11pm. The person I will be traveling with was on all of these but the Ft. Lauderdale and Washington D.C. trips but she's also been to NY where she stayed in a hostel and drove out to California and stayed in her car and camped along the way with 3 friends eating PB&J just because they could along with other random strictly driving jaunts to Kentucky and Indiana and a few trips out to D.C where she didn't see the sights but attended two protests and the inauguration of Obama. We live in the Midwest about 4/6 hours from every major city in the region and prefer driving over flying as you can stop and see more things but are deffinately willing to get out of the region and would prefer to not go north.we also spent a weekend exploring Des Moines Iowa when we went for a concert we made a mini trip out of it. more

Resolved Question: Camping on the beach...what about bears and animals?

We don't have any special containers...only coolers and whatnot. We'll only be there for two nights so we aren't planning on having a lot of food. Its going to be 5-6 people...so what do we do about our food. I know we still have to use a lot of precaution and to always store our food immediately after using, but how great of danger is there on the beach? (coastal beach Washington State, USA) more

Resolved Question: Closing of NYC PUblic Schools?

The New York City Department of Education has just announced its plans to close the schools listed below: August Martin High School Beach Channel High School Boys and Girls High School Christopher Columbus High School Fordham Leadership Academy for Business and Technology Grace Dodge Career and Technical Education High School Grover Cleveland High School High School of Graphic Communication Arts Jamaica High School Jane Addams High School for Academic Careers John Adams High School John Dewey High School John F. Kennedy High School Metropolitan Corporate Academy Monroe Academy for Business/Law Newtown High School Norman Thomas High School Paul Robeson High School Public School 065 Mother Hale Academy Richmond Hill High School Sheepshead Bay High School Washington Irving High School W.H. Maxwell CTE High School Frederick Douglass Academy III (middle school) Global Enterprise High School Monroe Academy for Business and Law School for Community Research and Learning New Day Academy Academy of Collaborative Education Kappa II Academy of Environmental Science High School Middle School for Academic and Social Excellence Public School 332 Business, Computer Applications and Entrepreneurship High School Choir Academy of Harlem High School Through a process called transformation the following additional schools would most likely be phased out in the beginning of the 2011-12 school year. Automotive High School Bread & Roses Integrated Arts High School Brooklyn School for Global Studies Chelsea Career and Technical Education High School Cobble Hill School of American Studies Flushing High School Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School Long Island City High School Queens Vocational and Technical High School Unity Center for Urban Technologies William E. Grady Career and Technical Education High School What are your views about closing these schools? Please also indicate your association with any of the schools listed above. The Department of Education believes that all of these schools are failing schools and that the students there are not obtaining the education that they deserve. The other view is that the schools are doing the best that they can, the statistics are inaccurate, that the city has not given the schools the resources needed to improve education, that little or no help or supervision has been provided by the Department, that the Department of Education does not listen to the feedback that it receives, and once a school is rated poorly many students do not enroll or actually change schools thus leaving mostly the poorer students there with a result of not being able to raise the school statistics. In general when attempts were made last year to close some the schools that were already on the list students, parents, and teachers were opposed to the closings. more

Resolved Question: What are the causes for the disproportionately high crime committed by Blacks in USA?

It would be naive to put it down to only social and economic causes such as poverty and dysfunctional families, so are there genetic reasons for this negative activity in our society? Any reasonable person would acknowledge that blacks are faster short distance sprinters than whites due to their genetic differences, so is it possible also the claim that blacks may have a higher testosterone level which accounts for their spontaneous and higher than normal aggressive nature? Food for thought. Let's work this important issue out as a community. You didn't sufficiently explain why white people are non-existent in the Olympics 100m sprint events. From this premise alone, there is clearly a case for group genetics.E=MC²: You're latest counterargument is referring to yourself at an individual level within a racial group. Nice try.Pigeon M: You need statistics for your claims. I know the Nigerian internet scams (and many other African countries following in pursuit) are not stealing pennies and nickels.Barbara: How does the currency of the statistics change the facts within? Stop ignoring the problem and shrugging it off as not happening. We can see it happening before our eyes, so many black men in prison yet only 13% of the population, are my eyes fooling me?"And whites commit the highest "PERCENTAGE" of molestation in the "world"." That claim can't be used because statistics gathering in Black African countries for the same criteria is very sparse or not there.Pigeon M: I'd rather be looted for my money than killed for my life. So who is more deadly? Blacks.Barbara: "There is NO statistic that shows that any specific race is more prone to commit any crimes." I just gave you a whole list of statistics directly addressing the high crime by blacks yet you refused to acknowledged them, essentially responding that it's in the past and it doesn't matter. Uhhh yes it does matter, I have more evidence than you! You haven't scored anything in this argument. Stop being so ignorant. Have a good day! more

Resolved Question: University of San Diego review?

i live on the east coast (right outside of Washington DC) and my aunt and uncle who are visiting from san diego told me i should really check out USD. I checked out some pictures and it seems like an insane looking school. It also looks like its a challenge to get into, which is what i am looking for. Except i never really was too much of a beach person, and im not sure how i would like it compared to other kids that have been living in cali all of their lives because things are so different here than they are there. more

Resolved Question: Question for Democrats: Where is Obama's leadership in the oil spill? Isn't he like every other politician?

Didn't he say things like ''We need to fix Washington.'' Hope, change, hope, change, you need a leader. I'll be that leader. Don't we have the resources to prevent this oil from ruining our beaches and economy? Why isn't he there? Does he fear everyone will be unwelcoming? I don't get it. He is destroying his own name and legacy by not stepping up to the plate in the oil spill and getting shown up by Israeli's disrespect and the Arizona governor's disrespect. Why don't you realize Democrats and Republicans are the same? They are both incompetent and can't run this country. Stop voting for both of them. The difference was though Obama turned it into one word catch phrases and people actually believed it or just liked the sound. In reality, no intelligent person could have thought it'd just change over night. It was fair to give Obama 1 1/2 years to judge his progress. He came into a big mess and has done little to dig his way out of it. Bush set a very deep low point that most people probably even including Obama won't touch. But it doesn't mean there was much ''change.'' I'm not sure what Barack's slogan is going to be in 2012. It'll have to be slandering who ever he's running against. more

Resolved Question: Why is there so much bureaucracy with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico? Why hasn't it been stopped yet?

I live a few miles from the Gulf. Our lives are hit hard by the oil spill. I have heard several dozen ways to get this thing to stop including setting a bomb in it and blowing it up, which makes the most sense to me. They can stop the spill, and it has become obvious that they just won't. Why? Is there an answer? Why does the government stop us from cleaning up and providing local remedies in saving our wetlands? Why are they coupling with BP oil to enable the ultimate destruction of our environment as if it isn't really happening? Why can't I step in and tell them to get the hell out of my way? People down here have resorted to breaking chain of command and federal law to begin cleaning up this oil spill. When I say breaking federal law, I am talking about not obtaining the proper permits and licenses to get the beaches cleaned, etc. because no one knows where or what or who to call. Why is this so damned political? Why don't these idiots get the hell out of our way and let us proceed? Washington and BP has NO CLUE about this area and they are like dragging around a literal ball and chain. I tell you they are in this together because one feeds off of the other. Im tired of complaining about the crap, tired of listening to everyone argue about who is who or what is what. I am tired of playing the blame game as well despite the previous comments. I am tired of everyday being another one the same as the last one. I am ready to crank up my boat and begin doing things my way. I can do more than "them" dragging my handicapped mother behind me on the sandy beaches in her wheel chair. more

Resolved Question: What is the cheapest flight from Washington DC to Florida?

Hey, We've spent a good 5 hours looking for a flight that fits our budget and at this point, we're seriously at a loss. We need help. We want to fly from Washington DC (or nearby) to Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, or LA on July 1st/2nd returning on July 5th in $250. As of now, the only opportunity we've found is for $200 via Spirit Airlines. As a consequence of the pilot strike, we're concerned that if we book our tickets, we'll be stranded at the airport - something no one wants to endure. Hence, we're looking at other options. Because our airline budget can't exceed $250 per ticket and we really want to from DC to Florida, we're stuck trying to find deals and we need your help. We want to go to Florida because 1) we've never been, and 2) we want to head out to an awesome beach spot! A couple questions: 1. Can you help us please find the best deal you possibly can from DC --> Florida (Ft. Lauderdale/Miami/Tampa) or even California within our budget? 2. Where do we look? I know this is the July 4th weekend and its a tough market for discount prices, but something has to work...? 3. If Florida or California is not meant to be, where else can we go from DC that sets us up to go to an 'awesome' beach location for the July 4th weekend? We've been to Virginia Beach already, so let's consider another alternative. Any help is strongly appreciated. Thank you so much :) more

Resolved Question: Beaches in Washington State?

My husband and I plan on moving up to Washington from California within the next month or so. We were both raised around the ocean, and are wondering if it is warm enough to have a beach day during the summer, and if it's realistic to go boogie boarding/skim boarding? Also, from Seattle , area, how far is it to the nearest beach? more
