Open Question: I 539, Application to Extend/ Change Nonimmigrant status?

In 1997 when my parents came to CA, we filed I 539 form at Sacremento and got the extention to Stay. In 2007 my parents went to American consulate and didn't get the visa, because they over stayed. My dad told them, they got the extention and stayed legally. Couldn't find the papers. We contacted USCIS, Paid money $640 and filled I102 , APPLICATION FOR REPLACEMENT/INITIAL NON-IMMIGRANT ARRIVAL DEPARTURE RECORD. USCIS says they don't have any record. Can anyone help me?I am in US, I am trying to bring my parents again. My parents visited me in 1997, we extended their stay, we filed I 539 application and got 3 months extension. After that they left to India.Legally they stayed. In 2007 they went to American consulated to get visa, they didn't get the visa because, they over stayed. He misplaced the extended I 94. Now I contacted USCIS, paid money $640 and filled I102 , APPLICATION FOR REPLACEMENT/INITIAL NON-IMMIGRANT ARRIVAL DEPARTURE RECORD. USCIS says they don't have any extension record. more

Open Question: Jim Bunning...what's all the fuss?

Jim Bunning seems to be this week's Republican bad guy. All he's asking is how Congress expects to pay for the proposed unemployment benefits extension. The last extension was paid out of the stimulus funds. Recently, Obama announced with great fanfare that he signed the Pay-as-you-go Bill into law. Well, Jim Bunning just wants to be assured that PAYGO will be applied to the extended unemployment benefits, otherwise, what's the point of PAYGO? Why do the DEMS and the media avoid the issue which is, what spending is Congress going to cut to finance the cost of this plan? Why should working Americans continue to pay for the unemployment benefits of millions when the stimulus bill was supposed to create all these jobs in the first place? PS From everything I've been reading, extending unemployment benefits gives people the incentiove to stay out of work longer (ie, some people will put off looking for work if they know that they have "x" number of months of unemployment benefits. I said SOME people. Not everyone does this. more

Resolved Question: What should I do if i was unfairly arrested in Kazakhstan?

I got a tourist visa for one month to Kazakhstan to be with my wife and child. As soon as I got here I went to the local police station to register my stay and get informed if it was possible to extend my stay for longer than a month. Surprisingly the immigration secretary signed and stamped my Immigration Card for three months. Unbeknownst to me she had just been new on the job for a few months and did not ask concerning extended stay for American citizens thinking it was the same as the countries surrounding Kazakhstan (e.g. Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine) So the next thing I find out is that I have problems cause of her error on the Immigration Card. Everyone my wife and I talk to tell us something different as if it would seem no one knows for sure what exactly is the law and what to do about my situation, we get mixed answers all the time. I was under the complete understanding based on the signed and stamped Imigration Card that I had three months to stay in this country, now it turns out that I cant and that i violated the law, after I have been staying here the whole time thinking I was ok. What should I do?? I feel it was not my fault, this is such an inconvenience! I feel stressed out, humiliated, mad emotionally distressed that I had to spend 24 hours in jail and I also have to pay a fine because the so called Immigration secretary did not know how to do her job. And wich might result in me getting deported which will prevent me from entering this country again for 5 years to be with my family. Can the U.S. Embassy help me out in some way? Can I sue the Immigration secretary for emotional damages? What can I do? more

Resolved Question: How can I stay in japan as long as I want( let me explain)?

I know there is something to the effect that americans can only get a tourist visa of up to 6 months a year or something, am I correct or wrong? Well I come from a wealthy family (my dad owns a company) & we are quite rich. Well I have been to japan several times before but that was on a student visa. This time I want to go withou any special visa, I know that on tourist I cannot work, however, I dont not need to.(because Im rich ) If I was to show the japanese embassy any proof that my father can support me by giving his certificate of annual income etc, would I be able to extend my stays in japan every 3 months? Can I exit & re-enter japan every 3 months to renew my visa over & over? & would there be an exception in my case especially if I can show proof of my family wealth & support of me that I donnot need to work, so there is no chance that I am doing anything illegal. more

Resolved Question: Can I sue U.S. Customs for Emotional Distress?

I am a U.S. Citizen and cross the border daily from Tijuana to the U.S. daily. Some officers already know me and my car, but my car is always having issues at the border because of my gas tank being too behind near the trunk. It is unusual for them to see it there since Infinity is the only make who has done that (i don't know why), so they think it is something else and always poke at it and inspect my car for awhile. The officers who know me or know the situation just let me pass by quickly but those who don't sometimes send me to secondary inspection. Well this becomes a conflict for me because I cross to go to work and most of the time these slow pokes make me late. Yesterday though I was sent to Secondary Inspection because the officer who I got first could not figure out what the hell was in back of my trunk, after I told him to fasten things up he decided to send me to secondary inspection. There they used a machine which they inserted into the gasoline tank and 30 minutes later they told me to get out of my car and then that I had to wait inside their office. As they pulled their handcuffs out I knew something was wrong. I hesitated a little asking them what had I done wrong? But all they told me was that it was nothing and they would explain it all inside. They walked me through their parking lot while a group of people where staring at my ashamed, embarrassed, confused face! I had seen this happen before and always thought those people deserved it for crossing drugs or whatever into the U.S. but I never thought this would happen to me!! And neverthless wanted someone to think that of ME! As they escorted me into their little office where the door is like the ones in jail i thought they really did get me with something! As I got there they took the handcuffs off meanwhile I asked what the hell was going on? They ignored me and talked in "codes" they only knew, they spreaded me against their counter while they searched me and I could not move at ALL or else they told me off. They jotted my information down in a sheet while I asked again why was the reason and ignored me once more. They took off my shoes and undid my hair do, took off my belt, my jewelry, and my personal belongings. They told to me to shut up and sit down like I had no rights and was guilty of something. After an hour or so (considering myself lucky) I was told that I was ready to go, while they gave me my belongings back i asked again and they told me it was an just extended inspection more than usual but that I was 'free' to go. I took my stuff and tried to burst out of there but I had to be escorted out. I felt so angry and ashamed and with no rights, in no way did that feel right at all!! I know they have to do their job to protect but they also pledged that they'll welcome you with respect and in NO WAY AT ALL I felt respected, not even in the way they spoke to me! I can't explain the way I felt! I cried my way to my job which knew nothing about my whereabouts since I could not use my phone at all (which I asked for to notify my job but was denied) At the exit of the parking lot I asked for my note of inspeccion or something to show proof to my employer but they rudely told me that they had nothing and just to tell them that I was here then ignored any further questions. I felt so violated and I just can't explain, angry at my country. I did not know how I could cross again the next day. I did not want to face them again I wanted to quit my job and stay in Mexico instead, I felt so anti-american at the time and I hated feeling like that, and hated that they made me feel like that too. Today I did not cross my car and I don't think that I am ever going to until I purchase a new car. I have to cross everyday to go to work and their attitude with me its just causing me too much stress and depression to a point that I do not want to live in the United States any longer. I hope this doesn't have further consequences because I have been noticing that I get a really bad headaches or possible migraines after I speak with U.S. customs and it just ruins my whole day... Can I possibly sue them for emotional distress because of this? I know it is their job but they could do it in a more efficient proper way so just in case the detainee was innocent then they would not feel attacked and feel the way i feel everyday! more

Resolved Question: Illegal immigrant with a valid SSN, who also pays taxes. In-state tuition in college + admission. Possible?

How about an illegal immigrant, who entered the country on a J-1 student visa (seasonal summer job) and overstayed it? It's been over 2 years since my visa expired, but I decided to stay and build my life here. I tried extending/changing the status, but got denied by the USCIS. I'm 22, female, originally from Europe. Please, do not judge, I only ask for prejudice-free advice. I have been attending a local community college for the past 2 years paying in-state tuition (I checked "US Citizen" box in the app, and no one asked for any proof). I have a 4.0 transferable GPA and am aiming for UC Berkeley next year. However, I'm a bit worried - how do Universities check if I'm a citizen or not? My community college didn't ask for any verification besides an ID (which I got when I still had the visa, in Illinois)...If I just put "citizen" in the application again, how will they verify? I pay taxes, work full time 9-5 Mon-Fri and attend evening and weekend classes. I'm also in the Honors Program. I'm a CA resident with great credit score as well :) Paying my bills on time, have my own place, car and a payroll check every week. I'm not interested in burdening this wonderful country by getting all the welfare I can get, I am trying my best to pay for my own college now. But I can't afford tuition anymore (if i get admitted to a UC I mean), so will be forced to apply for a FAFSA next year. I love this country, I will do my best to serve as a good citizen even though I still don't have a status... FYI - I did not attend an American High School. Please, share any advice you can. Will appreciate anything you can contribute to the resolution. Thank youWell, I expected this kind of responses from mostly illeterate people. Thank you "Label me liberal" for the advice. Could you PM me his laywer's contact info? Might consider a consultation :) Just so sum up my feedback: There are legal ways of changing the status to a Permanent Resident and eventually citizen. It involves marriage to a US Citizen. I'm not ready to marry anyone yet, and I wouldn't ever sign up for marriage of convenience. FYI - overstayed visa is not a felony. You need to know your home country's laws better before contributing your 2 cents. Marriage for Green Card is. P.S. there's no such word as "lieing" :) more

Resolved Question: R&P: Remember the Rollins Interview I Promised?

I want to thank those who participated in providing question suggestions the last time I posted my Henry Rollins question. Even though I extended it as long as i could, I decided it was unfair to pick a "best answer" since you all were awesome in providing questions. So, here I am posting a raw transcript of my interview with Henry Rollins which is yet to be pulished in a couple of weeks. If you see your question answered, pat yourself on the back :) Interview with Henry Rollins: February 2, 3:42 p.m. Mountain Time Q: Lenny Bruce, Brother Theodore, George Carlin: Did any of these outspoken performers play any influential role in your spoken-word technique or philosphy? A: Bruce and Carlin certainly have given me a lot of courage. When you consider what Bruce got shut down for, he is a true child of the First Ammendment. Carlin made me understand the power of words and I always admired how long he stayed working. I know that I will have not nearly the span of Carlin but people like him, Lenny Bruce and Brother Theodore are so rare. Q: At what age did you discover your "wayward/insubordinate" self? When did you probably start questioning authoritative society (e.g. Orwell's "Animal Farm" is what did it for me in fifth grade) ... A: The aforementioned as well as The Clash, The Sex Pistols and my friend Ian MacKaye made me see things differently. I guess all of that started happening in my early teen years. Q: Do you think Pop Culture has dumbed down our nation? A: If it has, it can't be a new phenomenon. Pop music has been with us for decades. I think that corporate media has done Americans a great disservice in that they have deprived America with any consistent degree of transparency. I think we are not as religiously fundamental as other nations in spite of all the attempts to make us so. Q: It's every liberal's dream to tell Ann Coulter to "shut the fuck up". I recall once, in your "Letters From Henry" portion of The Henry Rollins show, you directed a letter to her; how gratifying was that? Ever get a response? A: It didn't do anything for me, really. Ms. Coulter is just a professional wrestler who has not nearly the fan base that many would think. I have never heard from her. I think at one point, Fox News barked at me but no one really watches Fox. Q: I have heard stories that you and Ian MacKaye met while working at a Hagen Daaz? Is this true? If so, how old were you both? What's one of the earliest memories that crosses your mind? A: I met Ian behind his mother's house while riding my bike. This was many years before I was working at the ice cream place. I have known Ian since I was about 12 or 13. I am 49 now. Ian is the first person of my age group that had his own opinion that I was aware of. I was nothing like that. Q: You are both credited with sparking the "straight edge" movement, so how did you feel about singing songs like "Six Pack" and "TV Party" during your time in Black Flag, even though you don't drink alcohol or engage in that sort of behavior?" A: I had nothing to do with straight edge really. The songs you mention are parodies as the lyrics make obviously clear. Q: "Eye Scream" was probably my favorite of the books that I've read, that you wrote. There was something very "beat". Did any of the City Lights Books roster of writers influence you? A: I tried to read Burroughs and could never complete a book. The Beats never grabbed me besides Ginsberg's Howl, which I thought was incredible. The thing I wrote in Eye Scream called Everything, is a tribute to Howl. Q: Being a publisher yourself, have you ever had the chance to get to know Lawrence Ferlinghetti? A: No. Q: Jello Biafra, even Hunter S. Thompson, who followed a somewhat punk ethic, attempted politics. Is it within the realm of possibility for you to ever consider, maybe down the line, running for some sort of office to change things directly (or would that go against the grain of what you stand for?) A: I have not the intellect or stamina to get any traction in that arena. I like being a private citizen, it gives me a lot of lattitude. Q: When you played the role of AJ Weston in the FX television series "Sons of Anarchy", did you have to "empathize" to a certain degree with the white supremist's character to play the part convincingly? Did it ever disgust you? A: No. It's just work and I do it the best I can. I know that I am acting and that at the end of the day, I get in my car and leave the set. Q: Do you mind getting killed off in most of the movie roles you do? Any upcoming movie roles? A: I don't mind at all. I am grateful for the work. I work for a living. I am not an artist. Q: Details magazine named you Man of the Year in 1994. Did you hesitate to accept this title? Or was it an honor? A: It wasn't a title they give out yearly, it was just something they put on the cover. I was happy for the coverage and hoped it would help my band.holy crap! haha. it's only a matter of time before its pulled .... forgot about the Ann Coulter expletive LOL Thanks everyone for your inputHey Shades, maybe we ought to re-post this on R&S, and we'll get some foaming-a-the-mouth responses over his Fox News remark. LOL Thanks sookieLOL hey Beatle, looks like we're both geriatrics. This is going to be publiished online, with the local entertainment weekkly more

Resolved Question: Why do pro-illegal supporters insist that the anti's are against hispanics when we want ALL illegals deported.?

.......no matter WHERE they came from?. Here is a prime example........................................................Obama’s auntie still freeloading By Michael Graham Thursday, February 4, 2010 - Updated 14h ago + Recent Articles + Bio Michael Graham hosts a talk show on 96.9 WTKK. E-mail Print (210) Comments Text size Share Buzz up!Here’s another Obama sweetheart deal you won’t see on C-SPAN. This morning, the fate of Boston’s most infamous illegal immigrant, Zeituni Polly Onyango (also known as “Aunt Zeituni”) will be determined in a closed-door hearing. Why in secret? Because Auntie’s saga reveals every embarrassing truth that amnesty advocates and open-borders liberals like Mayor Tom Menino and Gov. Deval Patrick try to hide. The most important being that illegal immigrants don’t get that way without first doing something, well, illegal. President Barack Obama’s Aunt Zeituni admits she illegally overstayed her visa. Instead of obeying the law, she went to a judge in 2003 with a bogus request for asylum. She was turned down. She ignored the deportation order and instead filed an appeal. She was told again: It’s illegal for you to stay. She’s still here. Aunt Zeituni donated $260 to her nephew’s campaign for president - which is also against the law because she’s not a U.S. citizen. How against the law is it? Remember when the president launched his unprecedented attack against the Supreme Court during his State of the Union? His complaint was that foreigners might donate money to influence U.S. elections. All these crimes extend from the first crime - violating our immigration laws. It is simply impossible to stay in this country illegally without committing other crimes, like tax fraud and identity theft. But it’s not the illegal stuff that Aunt Zeituni’s doing that’s so outrageous. It’s what she’s apparently able to do legally and openly. She is shamelessly - and happily - living in taxpayer-subsidized housing intended for citizens and legal immigrants. Is there some poor American veteran living in a shelter because she’s got this apartment? Aunt Zeituni doesn’t care - why should she? Menino and the Boston Housing Authority don’t. And now she’s back in court, using taxpayer resources with another bogus bid for asylum. She says she can’t go back to Kenya because of “political turmoil.” Sorry lady, but if that’s the basis for an appeal, nobody would have been allowed back in the White House since Scott Brown’s election. Aunt Zeituni’s case puts the lie to the old canard that all criminal immigrants are here to work. She gets a stipend from a city program, along with her housing. In fact, as the Center for Immigration Studies points out, illegal immigrant households are far more likely to be on the dole than the average American. She also highlights the obvious truth of the Heritage Foundation study that our 12 million illegal immigrants are a $2.2 trillion net drain on the taxpayers over the course of their lifetimes. All of which ignores the most obvious and angering question: Why are Boston taxpayers stuck taking care of the aunt of the president of the United States? She’s got a millionaire in the family right now, one who also happens to live in public housing, by the way. He’s got room, too. Worst case scenario, Joe Biden can bunk with Bo. Instead we get another secret deal that’s almost certain to keep the taxpayers on the hook. Mr. President, here’s a problem you can solve with a phone call. Get your aunt a plane ticket to Kenya, or D.C., or hey - how about Nebraska? Call it the Ben Nelson version of immigration reform. We pay for their Medicaid, Omaha pays for your aunt. Resolved Question: Visa question - Want to travel and work in America for a few months.?

I just had the idea of going to america, purely for adventure, fun, excitement, travel, experience, etc. If I were to go, I'd like the option to be able to work to earn extra cash if I need it. I've had a quick glance on a couple of websites, one of them being the UK American embassy. I generally get the impression it's easier to get a 90 day non-immigrant visa. And have seen something about a 'Visa Waiver Programme' or something? For longer stays it can be a bit tougher, and 90 days is ample for me anyway. Although, if it's possible to get a longer visa I'd look into that too. But I'm not professionally qualified so an extended stay would be harder to have permitted. Thing is, the list of visas on the website is phenomenal. Which one should I look into? Surely there are countless people who do similar things to what I'm thinking of, so it must be quite a common area that the 'visa people' have to deal with. more

Resolved Question: Was there anything in Obamas State of The Union speech that really got you excited?

Yes another long question from me ... Obama just finished his first State of the Union Address. I felt it was bland, unemotional (even though he told countless American stories that allegedly caused him to stay awake at night), and it seemed disingenuous and hollow. Of course his promises of creating jobs and making jobs the number one focus is good news even though this is an issue that should have been the major focus to begin with in 2009. He made sure to promote his administration's supposed creation and saving of a couple million jobs despite the loss of 7 million jobs nation wide. He stated he wants a Jobs Bill on his desk without delay! So we could have lost 9 million jobs...whew I feel better! He spoke of the 95% of Americans receiving tax cuts last year...and the money recovered from the bank bailouts (by the way that was under Bush). He proposed using the 30 Billion recovered from the bailout to the banks to extend credit to help small businesses to stay afloat.....Wait a minute .....didn't we just recover that money from the banks? He spoke of eliminating all capitol gains on small businesses and providing tax incentives to allow them to invest in new equipment and hiring new employees. He said we have to put Americans to work today on tomorrow's infrastructure. Of course he made sure to throw in the state of the country that he inherited....before he ever walked in the door! I would expect nothing less from Obama! Tomorrow's infrastructure included drilling off shore, building safe, clean nuclear plants, creating more jobs in the process. Then he transitioned into the Cap and Trade that he wants it passed. Despite the scientific findings that some agree with. Doubling our exports over 5 years, Launching a National Export Initiative and seeking new markets aggressively. Investing more in education (even though we are way behind other countries who spend a lot less) and skills in our nation etc... Regarding the health care bill/reform he stated that we are closer than ever before and we need to pass this. Again the stories of those without health care or pre-existing conditions. He spoke of holding insurance companies accountable and as usual Pharmaceutical companies are not included in that reform even though they are one of the largest contributors to the health care cost and issues. The democrats stood up gleefully clapping and hanging on his every word. The republicans stoic in response to their continued desire to push through a bill that over 70% of American do not want and we know will end the the greatest health care system in the world if the government gets involved. Knowing full well the democrats and the administration are disconnected from the American people. 2011 will bring a spending freeze on everything other than National Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. He stated "If I have to enforce this discipline by veto I will" stating they would go through the budget line by line and program by program and enforcing the Pay as You Go Bill. My question is why wait till 2011? After all 43 cents on every dollar spent by the government is borrowed! Only about 10% of his speech was dedicated to the war on terror. He also recommitted to the war in Iraq ending and the troops coming home in August this year and increased security due to the Christmas bomber. He stated we must meet our responsibility of the citizens who sent us here. We face more than a deficit of trust, there are deep and corrosive doubts about how Washington works. We must do our work openly and give people what they deserve. He also stated that he wants the Congress to put all earmarks on a website so people can see them prior to any vote, again promising transparency that has been absent this past year despite campaign promises. Overall the speech was full of statements meant to inspire yet they were flat, he was lecturing, talking down to the republicans, all the while acting out the part of the candidate Obama on the campaign trail who deeply cares about the American people and the Constitution. He seemed sarcastic and unprofessional in his rhetoric. Certainly not the type of address we have come to expect form a President of the United States. I am sure I missed a few minor details in this recap. Did he make a few strides in the right direction? Of course....but I doubt it was as genuine as one would expect. My assessment?....I think it was an effort to make the democrats look good in an election year especially after the Massachusetts Miracle of new Senator Scott Brown creating a major upset! I believe only time will tell how genuine this administration is but after what we have witnessed this past year.... I wouldn't hold my breath! more

Resolved Question: How do you feel when illegal aliens treat Americans like "Road Kill"?

Janesville man given 5 years in hit-and-runBy GINA DUWE ( Contact ) Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 EMAIL SHARE PRINT ADVERTISEMENT Photo Omar Miguel Lopez JANESVILLE — Bradley Griffith wore a helmet and neon orange vest as he drove his motorcycle April 11. But he had the misfortune of being on the same road at the same time as Omar Miguel Lopez, who was speeding at 50 mph on Mt. Zion Avenue and ignored a red light before colliding with Griffith at Pontiac Drive. That’s how Assistant District Attorney Katharine Buker described the reckless actions of Lopez at his sentencing hearing Wednesday in Rock County Court. Several people were in the area when the crash happened at about 4 p.m., and they could tell Griffith was seriously injured, likely fatally, she said. “Mr. Lopez, who was the person who caused those injuries, didn’t stay to help. He left,” she said. Judge Richard Werner sentenced Lopez, 24, of 2323 Mt. Zion Ave., Janesville, to five years in prison and five years on extended supervision and ordered him to pay $8,051 in restitution. Buker said she expected Lopez would be deported after his prison sentence. Lopez pleaded guilty in October to felony hit-and-run resulting in death. In exchange, charges of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, causing death while driving with a revoked license and domestic battery were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. After the crash, passersby tended to Griffith while a witness followed Lopez as he drove east, southeast, north, west, down a dead end, exited his vehicle, got into a second vehicle and later a third vehicle, Buker said. Police arrested Lopez, who said he left the scene because he was scared. Lopez was not intoxicated or impaired; it was his character that led him to run, Buker said. He previously had been convicted of hitting an occupied vehicle and fleeing the scene. “He had the opportunity to learn that we have laws against speeding and hitting other vehicles and running away,” she said. “Mr. Miguel Lopez thinks that what he wants matters, and the rights and the safety of others don’t matter.” Griffith, 45, Janesville, died about a month after the crash. Lopez said through a translator Wednesday that more

Resolved Question: Unlimited right to remain, FLRM application and some issues, what shall I do, options?

Hi My partner has been here 20 months on an limited right to remain as an unmarried partner of a uk citizen. The requirement to apply for an unlimited right to remain means we need to show 2 years of living together, (bills etc). However we had a row as soon as we arrived from USA with her new Limited right to remain visa, I left and stayed with parents and she was evicted from our rented house months later. So over the last 20 months we have only lived together for 4 months. (we just moved back into a big house last month. Another factor is our 6 yr old Son (american) who has mainly stayed with me at my parents. What course should we now take to get her an unlimited right to remain Visa? will immigration refuse it and if so what other visa can she apply for? or will they extend it till we can live together for 2 years? 10 points best answerOh she works 70 hours a week as a support work in mental Health so she is self sufficient. Resolved Question: Home sales are actually up? Does that home sales are actually up, make you feel the "depression" isn't real?

According to the national Realtor association home sales are up 17.4% in the last two months. --quote-- November home sales leap - NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- After surging 10% in October, sales of existing homes jumped again in November, growing 7.4% compared with October to an annualized rate of 6.54 million units, according to the National Association of Realtors. "This clearly is a rush of first-time buyers not wanting to miss out on the tax credit," said NAR's chief economist, Lawrence Yun. November was originally going to be the last month in which sales to first-time homebuyers would qualify for a federal tax credit of up to $8,000. However, that deadline was extended through June. In addition, the tax credit was expanded to cover people who already own a home. They can qualify for a $6,500 tax credit if purchase a new house before the end of June. That should encourage "trade-up" buyers. The strength of sales in November surprised the industry. A panel of experts compiled by Briefing.com had forecast month-over-month sales growth of just 2.5% to 6.25 million from 6.1 million a month earlier. The sales total was also a huge improvement over a year ago. Sales rose 45.7% over the paltry annualized rate of 4.49 million units during November 2008. The contribution made by first-time buyers is evident in a separate survey NAR conducted of its members. They estimate that 51% of sales in November were by newcomers to the market, up a point from 50% in October. Normally, first timers account for about 40% of sales. Also propelling sales higher were rock-bottom interest rates. The average for a 30-year, fixed-rate loan during the month was just 4.88%, down from 4.95% in October and 6.09% a year ago. With rates that much lower, homebuyers can save more than $150 a month on a $200,000 mortgage. The industry expects home sales to slacken December, partially because of the tax credit's originally scheduled demise. That caused some buyers to push up their closing, stealing sales from December. However, sales will not fall off a cliff, though, according to Walter Molony, a NAR spokesman. "The psychology seems to be turning around," he said. "Potential buyers, who had been staying on the fence, now believe we're at or near the market bottom." One X-factor, however, is the vast numbers of homes that may come to market over the next few months. There is a large "shadow inventory" -- homes owned by banks and mortgage companies -- that have not yet been put up for sale. It could be as many as 1.7 million units, according to First American CoreLogic. In addition, another spate of foreclosures could be hitting the market as a number of option-ARM mortgages are set to default. All that may drive prices down, according to Shari Olefson, author of "Foreclosure Nation: Mortgaging the American Dream." And the impact of these renewed price declines could again alter the market psychology. "People think that prices have bottomed," she said. "I don't think they have. People will see price declines and that will discourage them from buying." Mike Larson, a real estate analyst with Weiss Research has preached all through the bust that price declines are what will "fix" the housing crisis. "We needed to see prices fall to make ownership competitive with renting again, and to restore the normal relationship of house prices to income," he said. "That has now happened and you're seeing buyers come out of the woodwork as a result." Still, they will have to come out in large numbers to offset the inventory overhang in some of the worst markets, according to Olefson. In the Florida condo market, for example, there is a 35-to-40 month supply of units at the current rates of sale, she said. Prices still almost certainly have further to fall --quote-- source: http://money.cnn.com/2009/12/22/real_estate/november_existing_home_sales/index.htm more

Resolved Question: Which of the following provisions of the Senate HC Bill do you disagree with?

I know that the House HC Bill is better, and has public option. And that the Senate Bill will have to be reconciled with the House Bill, before each house again votes for the final product. Can CONSERVATIVES help me out, and help Congress by selecting the parts they don't want in the final bill? Thanks! (from following list, please) -- Extend coverage to 31 million Americans, the largest expansion of coverage since the creation of Medicare. -- Ensure that you can choose your own doctor. -- Finally stop insurance companies from denying coverage due to a pre-existing condition. -- Make sure you will never be charged exorbitant premiums on the basis of your age, health, or gender. -- Guarantee you will never lose your coverage just because you get sick or injured. -- Protect you from outrageous out-of-pocket expenditures by establishing lifetime and annual limits. -- Allow young people to stay on their parents' coverage until they're 26 years old. -- Create health insurance exchanges, or "one-stop shops" for individuals purchasing insurance, where insurance companies are forced to compete for new customers. -- Lower premiums for families, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office -- especially for struggling folks who will receive subsidies. -- Help small businesses provide health care coverage to their employees with tax credits and by allowing them to purchase coverage through the exchanges. -- Improve and strengthen Medicare by eliminating waste and fraud (without cutting basic benefits), beginning to close the Medicare Part D donut hole, and extending the life of the Medicare trust fund. -- Create jobs by reining in costs -- fostering competition, reducing waste and inefficiency, and starting to reward doctors and hospitals for quality, not quantity, of care. -- Cut the deficit by over $130 billion in the next 10 years. more

Resolved Question: Will my fiancee be allowed to visit/stay in Canada?

My fiancee is american, and recently got into an accident and broke his legs. He can stay with my family and I rent free and not have to worry about food/bills. He can also get referrals for physiotherapy here in Canada. All his costs will be paid for by the insurance company. We will bring his truck up here and I just don't want border guards to turn him away, money will be tight and I don't want to have that hassle. He could be here for 3-6 months. I understand he has up to 6 months to stay, then he has to get an extended stay application. I just wondered if we should apply for a visitors' visa or just call canadian customs to check. more

Does anybody have any information on what I can do? Voting Question: did my girlfriend use me?

Well i've been out of town for about 4 weeks now seeing my girlfriend and she basically told me she just wants to be friends since I leave tomorrow claiming it will hurt less. To sum this up, my relationship started online in a chat room and she fell in love with me the day we met. I had promised to see her several times and each time it fell through, the final straw was when I promised to see her early September and I had to bail out my parents because their home was being foreclosed. She was upset and stopped saying that she loved me and was acting distant throughout september, she would get upset and say it would hurt less if we were friends and asking me to be her friend. I told her I had the money and was going to come out to see her but she kept saying "do what you want" like she didn't want me anymore. I went to sell my handgun and got enough cash to finally see her and she was acting like she didn't want to see me and I remember the next morning the police were at my door because I hadn't slept in 7 days and neighbors said I was acting suicidal so I was committed in florida for 72 hours in psych ward/crisis center. She was really upset and didn't know why I was in there, and I was taken to EMS because I was complaining of kidney pain. When I got out, she said she just wanted to be friends and wanted me to get better first but was talking about another guy already, when I asked her, she said they were just friends but had pictures on their profiles saying "My sweetheart" with them holding each other. I was finally able to get enough money to fly to Chicago when my mother sold the house and flew out there on October 31st which I was originally just coming as her friend. I stayed at the hilton hotel and she didn't see me the first day but came early in the morning the 2nd day and couldn't keep her hands off me. She was happy and I was happy, ordered breakfast, and laid in bed, everything was great. The whole week went well except that she complained that I flinched when she was on top of me a number of times. We were supposed to go to a pow wow downtown with her friend meeting us from Indiana (my gf is full blooded Apache Native American)and that went well, I covered myself, my gf and her friend and I bought them stuff there. Everything went well. By the 2nd week, things were also well but it was the 3rd week I was supposed to leave (I booked a 3 week trip with expedia that included the round air flight) she was distant because she didn't want me to leave and was upset saying she just wanted to be friends with me when I left so it wouldn't hurt as much. She was still talking to the friend of hers who just got out of prison and some of her friends were telling me she was dating him… I also thought it was strange because she didn't want her friends to know we were dating. I bought her a new laptop because her computer wasn't working and helped her with other stuff. By the 3rd week, I decided to extend my stay for her and stay another full week and booked another hotel that wasn't as nice as the hilton but still a 2 star hotel though the room was smaller and not as nice of a tv. She came over few times, I went with her to see her grandpa at the rehabilitation center for the elderly and she said that they didn't allow visitors or something so I had to wait in the lobby (so I never met her grandpa), she also wouldn't tell me where she lived which I thought was strange (living with her ex husband). Also for thanksgiving, I was helping her get stuff for her bathroom to fix it, I thought she was going to invite me over for thanksgiving but she didn't, it felt like she didn't want her family to know who I was or something. She brought me dinner though later that night and things were fine until I flinched again and she became angry and upset and left. Today she came over and she said she loved me and called me her husband, and everything was fine until she became silent and upset saying "your going to leave" and saying "what if you don't come back, why can't you stay here" and I kept telling her I was going to come back (as tomorrow is my last day here). She said "you know how many people have told me that?" She said "just be my friend, it will hurt less" and wouldn't say "I love you" and left. After all of this, I don't know what to think, a close friend of mine is saying that he thinks I was used and that it was strange that she was trying to keep me hidden from her friends and family which she claims was because they were mad at me for being in the psychward and thought I was dangerous and crazy (since I owned guns) but at the same time, why would she try to get me to move here if she didn't want me? I love her a lot and don't really know what to think at this point. more

Resolved Question: isn't the same ol same ol getting a little too old?

Freshman Sen. Mark Warner, Virginia Democrat, said Tuesday that President Obama has misplayed his attempt to reform U.S. heath care by focusing on insurance coverage instead of explaining that the current system is headed toward a financial meltdown. "I wish the president would have started the debate by explaining to the American people that our current health care system is not financially sustainable, for even another decade," Mr. Warner said. "Driving down health care costs should have been the focus of the debate." Mr. Warner, 54, made millions investing in technology ventures before he became Virginia's governor from 2002 to 2006 and helped cut the state's $6 billion deficit through a tax package. On Tuesday, he told The Washington Times' "America's Morning News" radio show the key points of the debate should be that the largest contributor to the U.S deficit is federal spending on health care, Medicare will go bankrupt in the next seven years and the average American family will spend 40 percent of its disposable income on health care insurance. He also said the cost of insurance on U.S. businesses is increasing their costs, making them less competitive in the worldwide market. The Washington Times America's Morning News (interview with Sen. Mark Warner)"As a former business guy, I believe America has to stay competitive in the global economy," Mr. Warner said. The effort by the Democrat-controlled Congress to fulfill Mr. Obama's goal of reforming health care in his first year began this summer, with contentious debates on Capitol Hill, then in town-hall-style meetings across the country. The House last week passed a reform bill, but the Senate has yet to hold a full vote. Among the major issues are cost, a potential government-run system and now abortion funding. Mr. Warner also said Tuesday that he, along with some Republicans and fellow Democrats in Congress, think the economy will never fully recover from the recession unless the roughly $1.4 trillion federal deficit is brought under control. He said old methods are not working and advocated for a bipartisan commission to make a new set of regulations on which Capitol Hill lawmakers could vote only "yes" or "no." "I'm a new senator, but I don't see how we're going to get the deficit under control if we do it through the regular order in the Senate in which people can add and protect their own programs." He said some Democrats also are saying they might not vote to extend the ceiling on the debt without a commitment to create the commission. more

Resolved Question: A Modest Proposal: Is there time to include a pet option in the Health Care Reform?

FACT: There are more uninsured pets than people in the U.S. by a 3 to 1 margin. FACT: Pets cannot be expected to pay for their own health care since the government prevents them from holding down paying jobs. FACT: Federalized preventative care for pets would save the U.S. Economy billions in more expensive veterinary care -- including expensive drugs, surgeries, chemo-therapy and specialized foods. FACT: Employers and existing State and Federal Programs do not provide pet care to their employees and offer no subsidy for pet care to the working poor creating pet-care gap between the wealthiest and poorest Americans. FACT: Pet Health insurers are making enormous profit margins insuring healthy pets, but limit what they will pay when pets get sick, can cancel sick pets and have limitations on coverage for preexisting pet conditions. FACT: Pets are not consulted in end of life decisions and millions are literally being euthanized because the show up in need of medical care that no one is willing or able to pay for. FACT: Happy and healthy pet contribute to the productivity of their owners and reduce the number of sick days, the number of days they stay home with sick pets and extend the life span of those who own them. FACT: By taxing wealthy Americans and veterinarians, we can show compassion for the most vulnerable among us without asking any sacrifice from the 98% of Americans.Mike, So are you saying we should cover DOGs -- that's my point!Guru, The President appointed a deputy attorney general who advocated for pets to be allowed to be represented by attorneys -- this is not "straying" to far from that notion.OK, so perhaps we should require proof of pet insurance when you adopt a pet and a tax penalty if you let it lapse after adoption?Mark, But it will be there in case one day you need a pet -- like a seeing eye dog, or a wheelchair campanion dog or a dog for the deaf. more

Resolved Question: I am very nervous, worried and confused, please help!?

I'm a 17 year old female from venezuela and a native spanish speaker I'm moving (with my family) to houston on january because of my dad's job. I graduated from high school on july, and if I was going to stay in venezuela my career would have started around february next year. Now I'm struggling quite a lot with american college applications, and just the general progress. I've already narrowed the colleges I'm applying to the ones in houston (private: rice, st johns, houston baptist and houston university). A bit about my academic record: -3.67 gpa (18.34 out of 20 in venezuela's grading system) -IB Diploma (most rigurous curse available at my school):Got it with a 30 but got an A on my extended essay wich was about comparing maduration rates of bovine oocytes that were from different bovine breeds -In venezuela you do not choose the subjects you want to study each year, you have an assigned curriculum, but you usually had 9-12 subjects per grade, so I've got from Maths, Spanish&Literature, English (as a foreign language) (5 years each), Biology, Physics, Chemistry (organic and not organic), Geography, Economical Geography of Venezuela, World History, Venezuelan History, Computer Science, Music History and more... Art was a big deal in my school, we had art classes at least twice a week for all of the highschool years. -I ranked 6th in my class of 65. -Have more than a 100 community service hours (80 are required by the school) -Co-Founded the school's delegation for model of United Nations (MUN) -Went to multiple MUN events and won a "outstanding delegate" award -I was the academic director of the organizational committee in the first MUN even that was hosted in the school -Participated in multiple theater plays, from comedic performance to dance. -There is an event in my school which is called the "Scientific Congress" wich lasts about 2 weeks every year. I took part of the "journal committee" and became a senior editor. -I also participated in the museum, an exhibition in wich we did murals and sculptures related to the scientific congress -I participated every year since I was in 1st grade of elementary on Literature Contests, ranging from Book Symposiums, Poetry Recital, Oratory and Original Short Stories. Every year got an award or two and when I graduated I got the "Wings of Creativity" prize because of my participation over the years -I also got on graduation a diploma of arts and design, I am a decent painter but I think I got it because my design was chosen for the graduating class t-shirts I am really worried about the following things: 1.- I never participated on sports teams at my school, I was decent at soccer, volleyball and basket but I didn’t even try out for the teams because I wasn’t that good. 2.- SAT’s: Never heard of those until recently, I’m really worried because I took the practice test on college board and I got a 1640 (CR: 610 M: 540 and W:490). It was quite hard because English is not my mother tongue, and there were many words (especially in the writing section) which I didn’t know the meanings of. Also in math there were some terms wich I didn’t know the meanings in Spanish. Still, I am really worried, I had never taken an exam like that (except for IB, but IB math was REALLY different, it was focused on longer problems and structured solving rather than filling a single box). I am planning on studying really hard because I was considered a really good student and got into rigorous curses like IB and got my diploma. My dream college would be rice but I am really disappointed of my sat results, I got the test in 3 weeks and I don’t know how much I can improve. Do you think I might be able to get in those colleges (Rice specially)? Do you think I can improve my sat score 200 points at least? (I am really disciplined once I set up a goal). What else can I do to make some foreign Venezuelan girl application stand out? Anykind of feedback will be much appreciated, I am really worried and confused about this whole new process that I'm getting into and my sat scores being to low to get into the colleges I want. more

Voting Question: Can our country sustain with our current health care system?

With medical costs taking a greater and greater percentage of our incomes, when will the breaking point come? With more and more people going uninsured, whether by choice or because the cost for insurance is out of reach, how can our government survive? Since our laws prohibit turning away emergency care for anybody who walks through the hospital doors, someone has to end up paying those bills. Many people are struggling to merely pay their mortgages or rent, let alone save cash for that $50,000-$100,000 hospital bill that comes in the mail after some accident or extended hospital stays. The uninsured might often find that it's easier to declare bankruptcy, kicking the burden right back to the American taxpayer. And for the uninsured with jobs, sure, if a judgment is placed against them, the medical bills can be garnished from their wages. (Exceptions are: North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Pennsylvania) But then legal costs pile on top of medical costs and large medical bills will still go unpaid. That does not even include the costs of deferring care for disease. People who are diagnosed with serious illnesses can end up being disabled because they are not getting the care they need or perhaps don't even know they have a serious illness until it is symptomatic because they do not get routine checkups. Once they're on disability, we will be paying even more than we would have if they had been able to get preventative and necessary care. It seems to me that our money would be better spent to keep people healthy, working, and paying taxes than it would be to let their medical conditions deteriorate to the point of disability. IF we did not already have laws stating that hospitals must render care, that people can shift their debt to the government through bankruptcy, or that people can collect disability and welfare, our current system might be sustainable. But unless these policies are reversed, how will our country sustain itself with our current system?Memphis--insurance companies are profitable only by collecting more in premiums than they pay in claims. It's the UNprofitable people who are getting kicked back to the taxpayers. That is unsustainable and is, in effect, subsidizing the health care industry. The government is already heavily involved in paying for these problems, but it's the insurance companies that are receiving payments from health care. The Dark Knight--increasing revenue is the only way to pay for increasing expenses. With our current system, tax increases are inevitable.Omega57--although I'm not sure if the proposed bills would make things worse, a single payer (Medicare for all ) system seems more logical to me. It is a political hot potato, just like deportation for illegal immigrants was 30-40 years ago when it actually would have been a viable option, but it seems much more straightforward than what is happening right now. more

Resolved Question: His Chinese mother and family won't accept us, should we break up?

Sorry if this is a bit long. But it’s a good read! I’d really appreciate some advice. Here’s the story: My boyfriend and I have been together for a few years now. We get along great, we have an awesome time. He’s kind, generous, and a pleasure to be with. We do love each other very much. I’m 31, and I’m three years older than him. I’m white. My boyfriends Mum and Dad migrated here from China. My boyfriend and his brother are both US citizens, born and raised here. They don’t really know any Cantonese, they can use chopsticks, but are just your general American guys. They play sports, eat takeaways, have normal jobs, etc. Like any citizen on the planet. I have a good job, I have two degrees, I’m a manager, and I’m a great mother. I have a 5 year old son whose father just up and left us. I work really hard to make sure he has everything he needs, he’s loved and he’s cherished. He adores my boyfriend and they get along really well. My boyfriend also adores him, they are great friends. The problem I have is his mother. When we’d been dating for a while we decided to go to his house. His parents weren’t home. He was really excited to introduce me to his parents. I had to go so I went home, but he stayed there. When his parents got home his brother made a comment about meeting his girlfriend. His parents were interested and asked after me. He told them about how I nice I was and how I had a good job, they were very pleased. Then he mentioned my age and they were a bit worried. Then he mentioned I have a son and his mother burst out crying and started hysterically screaming. She went on and on and he eventually left. The next day they came to his house and she was screaming at him again about how he’s ruining his life. She screams and pleads and cries about how I am a loser and a whore and will drag him down. He called me crying and he told me everything. I’ve never seen him so upset. I didn’t know what to say, I was just so hurt and offended. A few months pass and he goes to see them again. They were about to have dinner as a family and having assumed we had broken up she made a comment about what he’s been doing. He mentioned me. Once again the crying and hysteria starts again. It’s been like this for years. She assumes we break up, finds out we haven’t, gets hysterical. He sticks up for me, he calls her mean for judging me when she doesn’t know me. The way his family treats me also worries my family, they want me and my son to be accepted. They love my boyfriend, but don’t want it to go further than just bg/gf if this isn’t resolved. The rest of his family also refuse to meet me. Let’s face it, his mum is in charge. They wouldn’t go behind her back. Because of this I am excluded from everything. My dilemma is whether we should continue or not. Family is important to me. I am close to everyone in my extended family. They are a part of my son’s life. He says his family isn’t important to him, but if we get married then I expect them to also be important to me. I want to be part of his family. I want my boyfriend to have a wonderful life. I want him to experience great things like his family proud of him on his wedding day and celebrating the birth of their grandchildren. If he’s with me, he’s going to miss out on all of that, because they won’t have anything to do with me. I also wouldn’t want us to have children and have my son treated any differently by his family because he’s not my boyfriend’s son. Is it selfish of me to stay with him? Would he be better off finding another love, who his family will accept and he can live his life in peace? Would I be better off finding another love, with a family who will accept me and my son and treat us with respect and love us? I’m left wondering if this is a decision I need to make, I know he won’t make it. We can’t go past the bf/gf stage like this. more

Resolved Question: Black/White/cultural marital issues. Could really use your help?

Got married very young (20 years old). Two vastly different cultures (Urban African American [me], Suburban European American[him]). I over-immersed into his world, and lost myself in the process. I spent years trying to fit a mold that I did not fit into, trying to assimilate into his world and operate the way women operate. Husband was never very comfortable with immersing into my world. There were always reasons why we should not go into my world and be a part of it, making our lives culturally balanced. I gave in and stayed in his world, convincing myself that the Euro American suburban lifestyle was better than what I grew up with. I lost years of being with my own blood family. I started to regain my own confidance and started creating a life for myself through artistic career endeavors and husband was not supportive of it. When I came out of his culture to reconnect with my own, it was not met with support, but apprehension, and sometimes, criticism. I don't desire a strictly African American lifestyle, rather a very multicultural environment where both cultures feel supported. He says he wants it too, but there is always some form of aprehension on his part. Not only is the cultural imbalance a huge issue, but he does not naturally desire me. I have tried to keep our intimacy alive and he participates, but not totally and whole heartedly. I am left feeling undesired and unwanted and not excepted for who I really am. We have had honest, and raw conversations about this topic, as I thought he might be gay for a while because of his obvious lack of interest in me. It came out that he is not gay, but tends to have a natural preference for women that I will never look like (Euro American beauty). He feels bad for feeling this way, but also does not understand why I am so hurt by his preference for something I can never be. He wants to be what I want him to be, but I feel I am forcing him to be something he does not want. I am left feeling like I am trying to make my husband like me for who I am, when that should have already been set in place. Been married for almost 10 years and my extended family still does not know him very well. There has been no proactive attempts on his end to get to know my family. Now that I am saying I am done, he wants to try and fix things that have been broken for years. What should I do? more

Voting Question: How many of you are working unpaid time to keep your job?

Thanks to the global depression employers are taking advantage of the situation by getting loads of free overtime (even from hourly non-salaried staff). This even extends into the unionized public sector where I work. Employers have all the leverage due to the extreme unemployment - and "It's my way or the hyway....." I come into work yesterday and there's a guy laying on the floor for half an hour 'cuz his back went out and he was scared to take anymore sick time. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies: 1. The Japanese eat very little fat And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 3. The Chinese drink very little red wine And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats And suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. CONCLUSION Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.Snakeater It was a Chinese doctor. Wish I could post the pic. more

Resolved Question: Why is the USA the only advanced nation that has a private, for-profit, primary health insurance industry?

(“Primary” excludes companies that offer only “extended” health coverage to clients who wish to be insured against costs not covered by the primary insurer. Except for a deductible amount, these for-profit companies must pay claims validated by the primary insurer.) The answer is simple: the other nations understand that a private, for-profit, primary health insurance (PFPPHI) company has an inherent conflict of interest that leads inevitably to corruption: it can increase its profit merely by denying a valid claim. If it can be done, it will be done; only a naïve fool would believe otherwise. There may indeed be good reasons for any health insurance system to deny claims. A larger dividend is not one of them. PFPPHI insurance is fundamentally incompatible with fair and compassionate health care insurance. The customer of a PFPPHI company gets a double whammy. Part of her premium is used to process a denial of her claim. She pays the premium to avoid the bill and then gets stuck with it anyway – or stays sick. Only conservative Americans vote to be scammed and then protest vehemently when liberals try to help them. And the health outcomes of our PFPPHI system are inferior to the systems of other advanced nations whose per capita costs are much less than ours. (See: http://www.forbes.com/2009/09/09/america-versus-oecd-reform-opinions-contributors-health-care.html?partner=opinions_newsletter). The other nations also believe that it is immoral to earn a profit by denying succor to the sick. It contradicts the teachings of all of the major religions. Why do so many of our most fervent Christians worship Mammon, the free market deity, and boast that they are not their brother’s keepers? To those who praise the USA system, why don't you have the courage to follow the link above? Afraid of the truth?answer man: Don't believe the rumors. Check out the link above. The more you praise the supreiority of our health insurance system, the more I am convinced that you haven't traveled abroad without a tour bus. more
