Resolved Question: 6 year old with Epilepsy. Ever heard of some of these symptoms? If so, please contribute your thoughts.?

Okay, LONG story but i'll keep it as short as possible. My 6 year old son was diagnosed in March 2009 with Complex Partial seizures because he suddenly started having seizures a few times a week and occasionally 2x a day. They lasted anywhere from 5 minutes to 45 min. We, of course called an ambulance every time and he spent 5 days at Egleston in Atlanta. They did an MRI, an EEG, an EKG and various other X-Rays and blood tests.They could find no cause for the seizures which I guess happens a LOT with epilepsy. Anyway, he was put on Trileptal *3cc/5ml 2xdaily*. His seizures stopped until the end of June when he had two within 12 hours. After those, he was seizure free until November. (Just to add some info; In August, his new teacher suggested I have him tested for ADD because he couldn't focus in school and was having a hard time keeping up educationally because of it. His doctor put him on 5mg of Adderall in the a.m. for 2 months, then increased to Adderall XR10mg-We only gave him that medicine during the week when he had to be at school) In November his seizures came back. He was having one approx. every other day for about 2 wks then they started occuring multiple times a day until finally in december, his neuro suggested we put him into the hospital if he had another one. That same afternoon, he went into a seizure that lasted for 35 minutes so we took him to the ER where they contacted his neuro and . they gave him Ativan and Keppra (*250 I.v.) At this point, his seizures started happening for about 1-5 minutes, every 5 minutes. He was transferred to Egleston where they continued the Keppra and Ativan. He had a BAD reaction to the Ativan and started hallucinating about skeletons coming out of the wall, etc.. so they quit giving him that, Thank God! His seizures actually stopped during the night though..supposedly..It seemed more like they just started coming in a different form! He seemed almost narcoleptic because he just kept dropping out of consciousness every 5 minutes for about 24 hours. I was told it was the side effects of the Ativan wearing off and that it would stop within a day or so. The next a.m. (while still under the effects of the Ativan) they did another extended EEG, still nothing! Well, they said they saw a little seizure activity on the right side of his brain but didn't tell me much else. For the next two days we stayed at the hospital because he kept having these strange seizure/narcoleptic episodes. They finally said that it was the Keppra and that it should wear off and we should follow up in 3-4 weeks. Over the next day or so, I realized that during these episodes, he would try to curl into the fetal position, refuses to look toward any source of bright light (even with his eyes squeezed shut) and would become aggressive afterward. My normally sweet, loving child was now saying "Don't touch me!" and trying to hit and bite me! About 2 days after we got home I had to take my daughter to their pediatrician for a check up and my son went with us. His doctor witnessed two of these strange unconscious episodes" and had him taken to Scottish Rite by ambulance. Once there, I was told it was just medication side effects and to take a B6 supplement to counteract the "Keppra Rage"....They did another EEG and sent us home to follow up this week to allow the Keppra time to get into his system and any side effects to subside. This week, I called. He is still having these odd episodes a couple of times a day. They have increased his Keppra again but he still has them. He is completely unconscious at first but after a few minutes he can hear me but cannot talk, open his eyes or move his body any more than to twitch his fingers or move his head a tiny amount on command. I'm confused by all this! We have withdrawn him from school this week and are now homeschooling him so he will no longer be taking any ADD medicine--I haven't given it to him since the last week of November because he wasn't attending school. Anyone have any thoughts on why his seizures may have changed? His neuro is okay I guess. She def knows her stuff (even graduated from Johns Hopkins) but should I seek another opinion? I hate not knowing whats wrong with him or if he will grow out of it. I also HATE the fact that he has to just keep taking more and more medicine!! Thoughts? Advice? Opinions? more

Resolved Question: Frustrating Family Situation, advice needed?

I have an older brother (35) who has always been distant emotionally. He has a wife (39), a daughter (15), son (11), and another daughter, my godchild (4). He will never make the effort to reach out to me (or anyone in my family) unless something bad happens; then he's always there. (It's not often this happens fortunately) He has some issues to say the least. I live a 5 hour drive from them currently; have lived as far apart as Atlanta to NJ from them. Overall I have not lived in the same state since I was about 16; I am now 31. I have made a big point of being there, traveling, for all big events to support them and little ones like kids school plays and such, sending random gifts and letters, so that I can instill a real relationship with their children. I have no extended family and despite my brother and my crappy relationship, family means a lot to me (I have another brother who could win Brother of the Year award...he is the best person on this earth and we have a fantastic relationship.) When I visit, they often let me stay with them and are very warm, loving people - but they can't seem to literally pick up a phone ever, send a letter or card, even respond to my emails - so the 1x to 4x/year in between my visits, I can't help but feel quite hurt. They have never visited me anywhere I have lived, or come to any of my shows; I'm a professional musician/singer/actor regardless of free ticket offers or even if the shows are an hour drive away from them. They do not support me in any way. My husband I struggle with money - it's a hard field, and I am OFTEN juggling a bunch of low paying jobs 7 days a week, making my hours 40-70/week...and making it very hard to visit "just for fun" - especially as they are, again, a 5 hour drive away. Sister-in-law doesn't work, has never worked since the first child. Of course the kids are all off from school in the summer. Their oldest daughter, 15, has an email she regularly checks that is private to her Mom and Dad. She will email me really only when prompted by her parents to say thank you for a big gift and it's always without any substance. She is the one through the years I made the biggest effort with, sending cards, visiting, being there for her school plays, trying to always be there for her. I do know that the kids really enjoy spending time with me and I am confused why it doesn't go beyond my sparse visits. Currently I am six months pregnant with my first baby - we waited a long time to plan this and it's a very big deal to us. Both brothers have finished having their families, I am the only sister/daughter. I have heard once from them, a very warm "congratulations, we are all so happy for you" email. They ignored my offers to join my baby website (weekly inputs - it's actually a very cool site, not boring at all - with audio clips of the heartbeat, video, weekly entries, etc) and of course don't care about my professional music website either. I emailed the oldest daughter and said, hi, I miss you, how is school going, what are you up to, do you have any plays again this summer, do you have a summer job bla bla bla? Light and easy. I don't put pressure on her...but I do feel that at 15, she should have the sense to write back if I meant anything to her. I was raised to always respond...I was raised to value relationships and not to be rude. But now at 15, isn't this in her hands, shouldn't she do this without prompting by her parents?? After all of my free tickets offers have again gone ignored this summer and my pregnancy ignored as well, I received a phone message yesterday from the sister in law saying that she thought I "just knew" that my oldest niece was in play (how in the world would I know this since she knows she hasn't told me?) and wanted to invite me in case we could attend in 9 days, as all the cousins (have no relationship with) and their kids (whom I've never met) were attending, and she wanted to see how I was feeling with the pregnancy. I feel so stung and hurt. They don't care about my career, completely child-friendly shows by the way and sometimes even FOR children, ignore my emails and attempts to have a relationship, and my niece couldn't even write me back herself and tell me about her summer. (they live in East Bumble, so she does not have a busy social life, is home doing nothing if not in school/school play) I am especially sad that my oldest niece is not the least bit interested...in me having a baby, in being a cousin... My brother had her when I was 16. I flew to New Mexico to visit and meet her. I've always made effort like this. I am a fun, good aunt, and the kids definitely love being around me and I cherish them. My brother always shakes his head when we're together and says "they really love you." And yet, when my then 3 or 4 yr old godchild niece was crying uncontrollably as I slept downstairs with my husband and she wanted to join us on the blow-up mattress,instead of "bothering (!!?)" us and telling us her request which we would have HAPPILY abided, they consoled her for hours till she fell asleep. How to deal with? I am so hurt and don't want to call her back but this would hurt our relationship further. This is not a family I can have a "heart to heart" with, they put up very large barriers and I feel isolate themselves. This blood is thicker than water thing is really growing old. There is only so much I can keep giving with crickets chirping in the background. Please help... more

The recent beating Eric Gagne of the Boston Redsox experienced in Game 2 of the ALCS made me realize how hard it is to stay among the best in the role of closer in MLB for an extended period of time. When Eric Gagne played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, many thought he was the most dominating closer in baseball. Today, after various meltdowns, he has been ranked the lowest in Boston's bullpen. He is not the first to experience such a change. I know there have been various others. Mark Wholers of the Atlanta Braves and Brandon Lidge of the Houston Astros are the only other two I can think of? Can you help me identify others? more

Before you judge me, know that i love everyone in my immediate and extended family. But i have found out that my family has lied to me so many times and everything.....and i really want nothing to do with them now. Im from Atlanta, Georgia. Grew up poor all of my life, especially childhood. People got shot almost everyday where i grew up....My father is on drugs. My mother isnt a drug addict but she is starting to get dependant on her mediacation (methadone) Because i feared that i would only get into trouble living in the neighborhood i did in Atlanta, i moved to New Orleans a year ago, now staying with my aunt and uncle and her spoiled 31 year old daughter who stays with them still and has 3 kids. Its very racist here. They really dont help me either but i dont expect them to. i hunted for a job for 2 months on just a bike. Now im saving up money for college. My sister never calls (she's 33. my bro is kool though.) No one seems to really care. So why should i be around them now?i dont know if any of you out there can relate to my life....im 19 years old (will be 20 in feb.) i want to go to college in a place away from family and have my own place. Ive been in New Orleans about a year and i bought this laptop with money i scraped up to assist me in college. I dont want live in Atlanta cause there is nothing there for me now but drugs and trouble. i will apply to colleges in florida maybe. thanks for taking the time to read this. more
