Voting Question: I am contemplating for my future career path. Accounting or Finance ? and also other questions !?

Hey guys. I am an international student who's transferring to University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. Knowing it's especially hard for international student to get a job in the U.S. I would like to spend my two years at USC to maximize my chance to get a job in financial field around Los Angeles. First, I would like to get your advices in choosing my major.. between Accounting and Finance. Among various financial field, the field I am most interested in is Financial Analysis and Corporate Finance (+investing and financial planning), not accounting or consulting. But I know the Financial Analyst is required with solid accounting background, and also that Accountants can also do financial analysis as well as other various options (ex: consulting, tax, auditing, financial planning etc). Again, saying that I want to work as an analyist at financial firms, are those two majors so different enough at undergraduate level that they can land me on completely diffrent kind of jobs? or having majored in either one at undergraduate level won't make so much differences but only my skills and experience outside of class? And, I have all my families around LA and I have personal reasons to stay in area (maybe SF is ok.. but I can't definitely can't stay in NYC.. even though I want to). Having it said, are there investment bank branches or renowned financial firms branches or headquarters in Los Angeles that offers analyst position ? (do commercial banks ever offer jobs for analyst position ?? ) And the last questions is,, Can I still be able to sit and take CPA exam even if I do not major in accounting ? I know CPA designations probabaly can help me in landing on a decent job, but reason why I don't want to major in accounting at USC even though it's one of the best accounting school is that the curriculum doesn't interest me,,, while finance major curriculum does. Anyways.. I would be glad to get ANY other advices beside answers for my questions. Thank you and all of you have good ones ! more

Voting Question: I am a recent college graduate with a BS in Finance what to do?

I just graduated from CSULB with BS in finance and now im not sure what to do. I am currently working at a law firm as a admin assistant basically, doing some billing A/R and A/P, filing and ordering stuff. I am also kind of interested in financial investing or becoming an analyst, but i dont think i have enough knowledge to do so. Im not sure if i should go back to school and get my masters i may do it in accounting because i love numbers, but i don't know i just don't feel that i am smart enough even though i graduated with decent grades I feel like i just don't have the brains to do anything and everything i learned just went out the door. I wanted to start up an Etrade account and just mess around with $500 and see how i like investing, but i would like some more experience as well. I really dont know what to do now I can get my masters in Accounting or Finance, or i can try and take the CPA exam and pass. I currently live in Los Angeles and really need some guidance, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Need tips for getting into Investment Banking in the Los Angeles area.?

This might be long but since it's the most important thing in my life, kindly bear w/ me and read the whole thing before you comment... I'm an incoming senior @ UCLA and have an aggregate GPA of around 3.40 as an econ major(4-5 accntg classes as well). My sole aim in undergrad has been to work as an analyst in a bulge bracket/ middle market I-bank. For that, I've had internships in the past 12 months at a CPA firm, a commercial bank (credit dept.) and a middle market investment bank/ investments firm (Cash mgmt group). I've honestly gained invaluably from all these places and feel that the 'Work Exeperience' section in my resume is quite strong. However, I've heard that most of the bulge brackets will not even look at that section if your GPA doesn't touch the 3.50 benchmark. Moreover, given the current market scenario, I feel that it's extremely important for you to know someone working in the bank, in a good postition. Since I don't have either of the above mentioned things, I have a feeling that all my efforts will go waste and I won't be called up for the on-campus interviews (which start in about a month). That is my main concern at the moment. Also, even though my accntg knowledge isn't bad at all, my grades in this subject aren't great. That's mainly coz I can't handle 2-3 finals on a single day(that happened with me every'frickin'time i took an accntg class). Anyway the point is, if I do end up getting an interview then I feel fairly confident about acing it. As per the advice given to me by a couple of seniors, I read a few vault guides, the wetfeet, monkey business and became a daily reader of WSJ and my job functions in the current office have made me extremely informative about the current market happenings. So I hope that all these will help in the near future. Please provide any sort of guidance/ tips as to what else can be done by me to get to those interviews.  more

Resolved Question: How is an FPA different from a CPA?

I'm an entrepreneur and I'm getting killed in taxes. An associate of mine said to use an FPA instead of a CPA because an FPA can identify more deductions. Problem is, I can't seem to pry any FPA contact information from my associate and I'm having no luck searching the web for what an FPA is and how to find one. What is an FPA? How do I find one? I'm in the Los Angeles/Orange County area of California, USA. more

I am soo sad over the fact that i love accounting soo much especially independent audit, yet i cannot win over the four-part interview process. I don't know what i am doing so wrong that makes the interviewers not select me. I have an outgoing personality. I live a transparent life and am open to changes and discussion. If i am ever aware of a problem, i do my best to correct the problem. I have interviewed with Deloitte, in house second round and i bombed it, samething with Protiviti. I am currently taking the Becker CPA review on my own and have finished FARE and the Audit review. I absolutely love Audit. I dream of working for Public Accounting firm, yet they dont want to give me a chance. Should I walk around with a JOb wanted sign in the Financial District Downtown Los Angeles, begging for a career. I have a good 3.2 Acct GPA.
