Los Angeles Dog Aggression Training Questions asked
Resolved Question: how should i train my German Shepherd (long story) and am I doing the right things?
We never planned of owning a dog then my dad suddenly brought a 3 month old female German Shepherd from people who could no longer take care of her. The first owner will be relocating to another place and he couldn't bring her with him and gave her to my dad's friend (second owner). The second owner could no longer afford to have another dog because they already got two so that's when my dad brought her home. So having no idea how they trained her, i have very little to no idea where to start or how to start. Giving her up is out of the question because she already got attached to us and it's just sad too make her feel that she's unwanted. She has been with us for about 10 days now. Some of her bad habits are 'play biting', jumping on people <in an excited and welcoming way tho>, aggressiveness to other dogs, resisting and chewing on her leash, preying on small animals<bugs, snails>, chewing shoes, and others yet to be discovered. She used to pee/poo inside the house but now she already learned to pee//poop only in our backyard. she also used to eat other dog's poop. There's also this bad behavior that i had just discovered this afternoon that really worries me. After giving her a chew toy that i had just bought the same day, she really loved it so much that she became too obsessive and possessive of it. after letting her play with the toy for about 20 minutes in our garage, when i was trying to get it back<using my foot>, she growled and tried to bite my foot hard. thank god i was wearing sneakers and denim pants. i even tried to get it using a mop stick. anyway, i tried to show her that i was not scared, stomp my foot and stayed firm and told her to 'SIT' <i taught her that trick three days ago which she immediately learned>, she dropped the toy and sat. Then i attempted to get the toy again, she growled again, took the toy out of the garage, dug a hole, put the chew toy on the hole, and returned to me. I told her to 'SIT' again then she sat and was like waiting for the treat/praise and became somewhat submissive. After that, i tied a thick nylon rope to the chew toy and the next time i let her play with it, I tried to show her that i get to play with the toy first and get to decide when she could play with it <thinking about the canine pack leadership>. She desperately tried to get the toy but she was not biting though. occasionally, she would jump to me but i always try to push her back just enough to get her paws on the ground. Sometimes, she would whine then gives up and lie quietly on the floor. Then after giving the chew toy again after lying down, she became a little hesitant to bite it knowing that i was watching. but after playing with it for over five minutes, she would become possessive again and i'm just pulling the nylon rope to get the toy back whenever she resists. She never showed signs of possession aggression before because we could even touch her food without all the growling and biting. whenever she play bites, i just push her back just enough to keep her away and stand straight and look her in the eyes. After a few biting attempts, she would eventually give up. I know this 'play bites' is just a phase but is there a faster way of getting her over with that phase? we're also planning to enroll her to dog school but i don't know how much would that be here in Los Angeles County. specifically to get rid of her aggressiveness to other dogs and to get her behave on leash. However, even if she has lots of bad habits, she's very sweet to all people, even to strangers. She absolutely loves kids too especially our neighbor whom she always wants to play with. moreTop Los Angeles Dog Aggression Training Links
