Open Question: Servers, what is the best restaurant to work in anywhere in Los Angeles?

I am moving back to LA from Atlanta Georgia. I work at one of the top three rated Olive Gardens. Although our service and food is rated very high, the tips are a nightmare! I am tired of serving ignorant people who don't appreciate my smile and good service. Has anybody had a good overall experience at a particular restaurant in LA? more

Open Question: What makes non-American western people want to live in the US?

I'm speaking of Brits, Canadians, Aussies, Kiwis, Irish, Germans, Swedish etc... I ask because personally, I've never seen the interest and I was once offered a very lucrative job in Los Angeles. I just thought to myself, not only do I not want to move somewhere where my wife may be raped, but I might be raped as well (at gun point). That might sound extreme, but it's true that American crime rates are much higher than in other industrialized nations and the cost of living seems ridiculous as well. I assume westerners move to the US to chase acting dreams or whatnot, but is that it? Why did you move there if you did? (I'm not enquiring about those pushed their by their company). more

Open Question: Should I move to New York or Los Angeles?

I plan on moving only for the summer. I need something new and fresh. I've been through so much I need to get out of my town that's only 15,000+ people if you catch my drift. I want to pursue acting, modeling, writing, etc. Basically, the whole works. LA is closer to me so that would be a pro. The con, however, would be the competition. New York is far away which serves as both a con and a pro. Same competition but more equally spread. Thoughts? more

Open Question: I'm moving to Los Angeles this summer. Thoughts?

I plan to move to Hollywood this summer. Only for a couple of months, of course. I plan on just going there via Greyhound Bus. I don't know anybody there. No connections. I want to become an actor. I have a novel and a screenplay, too. Yes, I know this dream is typical and cliche but how can I survive? Should I get an agent? How do I get an agent? I also want to model, too, and I really think I have potential. Anyone ever do this before? I live in a small town that's only 15,000-17,000 population... more

Resolved Question: Can someone proof my paper?

It's a one page biography paper of the poet Charles Bukowski American Poet, Novelist, and Short stories writer Charles Bukowsi was born on August 16th, 1920 in Andemach, Germany. His father an American soldier and mother a German. At a young age, Bukowski and his family moved to the United States. The family settled down in Los Angeles, California. Bukowsi grew up with a strict father, who believed in firm discipline. During Bukowsi’s childhood, His father would beat him. Boys at his school often teased him and girls rejected him due to his complexion. At just 13 years old, Charles had his first drank; which would affect his life in major ways. Charles attended college at Los Angeles City College. But, he soon dropped out after 3 years and moved to New York to become a writer. However, his dreams of becoming a writer didn’t become reality quickly. Due to the lack of his publishing success, Bukowski turned to alcohol. Charles had hit rock bottom and; abused alcohol for about 10 years. Charles decided to take a second try. It wasn’t till the 60’s, Charles Bukowsi became popular. Bukowsi worked several jobs such as: being a dish washer, truck driver, and post office clerk, to support his writing. He published his first story at 24 and at 35, he became a professional writer. Bukowsi has written more than 40 books of poetry, novels, and prose. Sadly, his journey came to an end on March 9th, 1994. Charles Bukowski died of Leukemia. Despite, his passing, His legacy and writing will forever be remembered. more

Open Question: Can someone help me about the Freedom of Religion and Conscience in Canadian Constitution 1982?

This is a fact-pattern: Mr. Smith has moved to Toronto. He is part of a new religious group that has recently been founded in Los Angeles. This group was founded in response to the celebrity culture of southern California government identification cards. They also believe that being photographed is corrupting and will therefore not consent being photographed under any circumstances. As part of his legitimately held religious beliefs, Mr. Smith has challenged the requirement that he be photographed and carry a driver's license in order to drive his car. The Ontario Superior Court has agreed that the requirement of a picture is an unconstitutional violation of his religious freedom, but has held that the requirement that he carry his driver's license with him to drive is not. Both parties are cross-appealing this decision. I am siding with the Ontario Superior Court's decision about Mr. Smith needing a driver's license to drive regardless of his religious aspects. I referenced some cases such as R. v. Big Drug Mart 1985, R. v. Robertson and Rosetanni 1963, and the Lord's Day Act 1905. I am thinking about B.(R.) v. Children's Aid Society 1995, as well. I feel as though I am interpreting my work to Mr. Smith's appeal =__= ;;; more

Open Question: NHL 10 Be A Pro - How many games does it take to move up to the NHL?

I started as a Center, and chose the Los Angeles Kings. I've been on the Monarchs for 6 games now, and am 6-0. Am I not playing well enough to go to the Kings? Open Question: Show biz in Los Angeles?

Most of my theatre experience comes from acting in school/community theatre. I am a seasoned actor with lots of experience and motivation. In a few years I'll be packing my bags and heading for Los Angeles to "follow my dreams." Yes it sounds cliche. I plan to act in films. I know I am one of the million others who are moving to LA. Blah blah blah. I know my chances of becoming a big film star are slim to none. I'm not cocky and I do realize that it'll take time for me to break my way into the Hollywood movie industry. I want to know how the acting world in Los Angeles is like. -How much would I need to network with producers/directors? -When I arrive, how do I book an audition with an agent? -What type of work does an agent have to offer? -Will I be open to film auditions with an agent vs not with an agent? (and not as an extra) -Generally, how does a film/television audition go? Do I receive a script to practice overnight? -And what can I do now to get ready? i.e.. practicing movie scripts...? As you can see, I am misinformed and have much to learn. If you could, please try to answer my questions as best as possible. Enlighten me on the world of show biz. more

Open Question: How much would a live-aboard boat cost?

I'm 22 years old and moving out of my parents' house soon, and I thought instead of buying/renting an apartment, to buy a boat I could live on (Not sure if it's possible to rent. If it is, then that's a possible option). I'd probably want to live-aboard for about 3-5 years. I'd want the boat to be capable of cruising on the ocean coast. Also, I'd want it to be able to sail to Catalina Island in California from Los Angeles; that's about as far as I'd want to sail out. I'm going to be the only one living aboard. Any price ranges or any other tips would be helpful. more

Open Question: Planning to move out in a few years: any advice on how to get ready?

I am currently 21 and live in Toronto with my parents. Once I finish school and save enough money, I'm planning to move out. I have made it a goal that I must move out by the time I'm 25. However, not only will I move out of my parent's place, I'm planning to move out of Toronto. This is something I've thought about for years, from the time I was a teenager. As much as I love Toronto, I don't want to live in the same city or place for the rest of my life. There are many great cities like Toronto and for me, I think it's important to get outside of the box and live in a different place to really appreciate what this world has to offer. Where I'm going to move is something I'm currently doing a lot of research. If my parents get their U.S. visa number and I'm still considered a child in a few years, my first choice would be Los Angeles, then San Francisco. If California is not an option, then I'm considering Vancouver or Montreal. Anyways, now that I've told you my plans for moving out, what can I do right now to get myself ready? I'm planning to save $50,000 before I move out, so I am able to live comfortably and give myself some time to find a job when I move to a new city. What else can I do, should I: -Research how rent and leasing work -How it's like to live on my own -Tax benefits/deductions Anything else? Is there anybody I could talk to about this kind of thing? My parents unfortunately are not the best people to talk to. more

Resolved Question: .243 or .30-30 on Wild Boar?

I inherited both of my centerfire rifles. One is a Sears Model 53 (Winchester Model 70) in .243 with a 4x Scope. The other is a Sears Ted Williams .30-30. (My Dad REALLY liked Sears). Everything my Dad had regarding hunting was in this big wooden chest he had made for him in the Army. It had a 3x scope in it, but I could never quite figure out what for. Well, wrapped up in old newspaper and rubber bands so old they dissolved into rubber stains, was a side mount for the .30-30, with the screws (wrapped in another piece of paper, wrapped in masking tape) . I think I can convince a guy at my sportman's club to mount the scope for me for nothing. All the gunsmiths in Los Angeles have fled. The only gunsmith I know of is way over in the valley, is never open, and charges an arm and a leg to mount scopes. Anyway, now I can actually use the .30-30 for hunting (I suck with open sights). In California, wild boar is open year round. I have got a few places to hunt, according to people I have spoken to, nearby in the Los Padres National forest. Would I be better off with a .243 with a 4x scope, or a .30-30 with a 3x scope? For most people, a .243 is a longer range rifle, but I am not that good a shot. I figure anything past 125 yards and moving is pretty safe from me. I am leaning towards the .30-30. Also, what ammunition would I use? 150 grain? 170 grain? Or should I splurge and mail order some LeveRevolution .30-30 Ammo? I still have about four and a half boxes of (old) Ted Williams 170 grain ammunition my father left me. more

Voting Question: Wanting to move from Australia to Los Angeles?

I'm from Australia, hoping to get my degree in Computer Science. I've read about people moving and the different types of processes etc. So far I've read that I need to get some type of visa, it's recommended to speak with an immigration lawyer, healthcare, obviously flights, accom. and a job. Does anyone know how easy it is to get a job in the IT/computer field? And how well it pays? What type of visa is best? I was thinking of trying to get all this with $20,000 - $25,000. Will this be enough? Any other advice? Thanks in advance. Thanks for your response Echo Two. I am willing to stay in Australia for a few more years. Particularly because this will be a huge move, and I want to be as prepared as possible. I've read about the economy putting people out of work, especially in LA. Hopefully I can wait a few years and it'll be better then. Is it easy to get into school over there? Especially for someone immigrating over? Because I'm more than happy to go back to school over there if I had to.Thanks hornedjew! Am doing so now. :) more

Voting Question: I need the dude's number who pays you to go see tv shows being taped in LA?

A few years ago, there were several people who would pay audience members to attend various television show tapings in Los Angeles. I've lost all their numbers since I moved out of the area. I remember going to see Carson Daily several times, and various tapings at HOllywood Studios, as well as Judge Joe Brown, and Craig Furguson. Someone who lives in LA and does that type of thing can you give me some numbers? I'm not talking about casting companies, just audiences for TV shows. Thanks more

Voting Question: Why do some people on here hate Chicago, when it's a great city?

I'm from Los Angeles, and visited Chicago in September last year for 2 weeks. It was really nice, the atmosphere, air was much better than in LA, and Chicago is a MUCH cleaner city. Downtown is very big, and the architecture is more beautiful than the ones you get in LA, which aren't that great. There are good restaurants everywhere, no matter where you go and not as expensive as in LA. The parks are always quite nice, also there is a lake right by the city. There's good Public Transportation, and most importantly, people are so Kind and fun to talk to. They have a good mentality I think. I would love to move to Chicago. But why do so many people think it's a shithole on YA!... i read a lot of people hating it, it's not that bad at all. more

Voting Question: When will Yahoo "get it"? Part I. (ALL THIS AND MORE! AFTER THESE MESSAGES...)?

I've always said I could run Yahoo blindfolded with one armed tied behind my back, because it's really not rocket science. There is something clearly wrong with every webpage on Yahoo! From billions of advertisements to the freaky little cartoon faces on everything... The site looks like it was designed by a kindergartner. (And you wonder why no one takes Y! seriously.) Today, it's Y! Answers... And as you may have noticed, Y! just redesigned the interface, but it's still the same bull****. Jesus, you can't even say bull****. Go ahead and try, I bet you can't say bull****. Compare to this Google page: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=696420f4b3d9502e&hl=en WE INTERRUPT THIS PROGRAM TO BRING YOU THIS NEWS BROADCAST... I HEREBY REQUEST A MOTION TO CHANGE "YAHOO!" TO "YAHOO?" Google doesn't police their users and treat them like 1st graders, so why Y? The censorship is overkill- it's like communism. There should definitely be an adult category that you have to verify your age to view like every other website in the world. eBay has one. YouTube has one. CATEGORY NEEDED! Computers & Internet > Internet > Online Shopping? eBay, Amazon, Craigslist and the like are HUGE. If I have to tell you that, you're an idiot. Maybe I'm stupid, but I'm not the one with a Boardgames category with only 90 questions asked. Moving right along... Then you have huge categories like Parenting... <--- THAT SAY'S IT ALL MORONS! You don't need 10 subcategories in Parenting. In fact, Parenting could be a subcategory under Family and Relationships. What about Comedy, is that not Entertainment & Music? And then there's all this "other stuff" that aren't even questions at all such as rants, answers to questions that were not asked, discussions and questions like "which pic of me is teh best 1?" that doesn't really work into anything, but it get's posted everywhere AND IT WILL CONTINUE AT ALARMING RATES until there's an "Other" category or an integrated discussion forum connected to each topic via "Discuss this question on the forum" link. For christ's sake, Yahoo! give the people an outlet to connect with each other! Next up is Local Businesses > United States. It only has 30 sub-categories, THAT'S NOT EVEN 1 PER STATE, BUT CALIFORNIA GET'S 5! (San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose, ) Where's Jacksonville? It's only the 13th largest city. Memphis? 14 Million people in New England but they've got St. Louis (population NOTHING). Yahoo thought they were clever: "Oh, we'll put on every 300 miles"... WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?! WHEN WILL YAHOO! GET IT? To Be Continued... more

Resolved Question: Live in San Francisco or Los Angeles?

I'm trying to decide which city to move to this August. I'm aware that L.A. has really bad traffic, smog, and some pretty superficial people. S.F. is ridiculously expensive, foggy, and has a plethora of hippies- from what i've heard. But i'm not really concerned with those issues. I'm a young girl interested in film, live music, tattooing, and nightlife, who some people might consider somewhat of a hipster- does anyone have a suggestion on which city would suit me more? I'm from San Diego, and have visited both cities, but i'd like to hear the opinions, and info about these lovely places, from people who actually have lived or live there. more

Open Question: R&P: what have you heard from the Dirty Projectors?

Voting Question: Today my boyfriend let me know that....?

in about 2 months he is gonna be moving because of a job he found in Los Angeles. (6 hours away from me) I can't go with him because thats the time that I start MY job here. This completely breaks my heart because until now he has treated me amazing and been just wonderful 100% to me. It SUCKS that it has to end like this. I was just in shock and didn't know what to say besides "Oh really?" Which sounded like I didn't even care, but I do I just feel like our relationship isn't worth anything to him & that he won't even care that he's leaving me! He is 25, I am 19. We have been dating for 9 months. What should I do? How do I deal with this? & I am NOT interested in a long distance relationship. more

Open Question: Empty. Alone. Pain. Isolation. No sex. Suicide. Anxiety. Am I destined to walk the earth alone forever?

I'm 31 years old and have not had a girlfriend or sex since December 13th 1996. I have not kissed a girl since October 31st 1999. I have not had a date since February 2006. Ironically I first had sex at age 14. My last relationship was with a beautiful girl which lasted from ages 16 to almost 19. This was the first and last deep sexual relationship I had. I was in love and just wanted to get married. That’s all I wanted. But she went a different direction. I had always believed if you love something – you let it go. So that’s what I did. And ever since then I have been alone. Isolated. Few friends and nothing else. I have kept this dark secret inside me for what feels like forever. Some people think I'm a “ladies man” (HA!!!) and when I'm asked about this / my love life etc….I lie about imaginary dates that never happened and nonexistent past relationships, just so people will think I'm normal. I do not know what crime I committed against God that was so horrible to be punished in this manner. Not even Cain, who murdered his brother in cold blood, was punished like this. Even CAIN HAD A WIFE. Are you listening to me God? If there is one thing I could ask you it’s this: Why was this done to me? NOT EVEN CAIN WAS PUNISHED LIKE YOU ARE PUNISHING ME. Girls NEVER talk to me first and NEVER make the first move. EVER!!! At best they will stare quietly and muse something to themselves. And I'm afraid to say anything or put myself out here. So I don’t. The most bizarre thing about this ordeal is that I am NOT ugly NOT poor NOT anything like that of the sort. The following truthful facts are 100% true. Please believe me because I'm telling the truth and have NO REASON to tell otherwise: 1) I have a college degree and a stable solid career in law. I have a corner office. I’m confident (in business) and deal with complex issues and business meetings. I drive a Land Rover and make 90k per year. I live in Los Angeles, CA, ON THE BEACH (which in case you did not know is very pretty and expensive). 2) I'm constantly carded. People are shocked at my age and tell me I'm good looking, I'm 5'11. Athletic. Brown Hair. Blue eyes (everyone in my family has blue eyes it’s an anomaly). Good face, V-Shape. Good genetics. Zero allergies. Never had surgery or been hospitalized in any way. Everyone in my family has lived 90+ years old (a sign of good genes). 3) I'm a good person. On the inside. Honestly I am. I believe in “doing the right thing”. I’m not “religious” and don’t go to church or talk about my religion to others but I’m constantly trying to reflect on God and asking myself unanswerable questions. I'm a hopeless romantic. I have always been in love with being in love, even though I have a high sex drive. I treat every woman like gold. I'm responsible. Reliable. Dependable. Supportive. I compliment women. I've been described as “the kind of guy who would make a perfect husband”. I have decided to commit Suicide on December 13th 2012. I am setting this in stone. I cannot go on living like this. I did not do anything to deserve this unimaginable emptiness of not feeling ANY physical or even mental companionship with a female. Recently I read about a guy named George Sodoni. This person was a sick coward who targeted and murdered innocent women in a gym because of the mental instability created by his personal problems. However there is one thing, and ONLY one thing, he said in his blog that I agree 100% which is quote: "a man needs a woman for confidence. He gets a boost on the job, career, with other men, and everywhere else when he knows inside he has someone to spend the night with and who is also a friend. This type of life I see is a closed world with me specifically and totally excluded. Every other guy does this successfully to a degree. Flying solo for many years is a destroyer" This is my first and last testament to God or whichever spiritual being or force is doing this to me. I cannot take this deprivation and pain any longer. Please hear me…. Without companionship, love, sex and female comfort, my life means nothing to me. I will commit Suicide on December 13th 2012 if by that time you have not allowed me to get on with my life. It’s not like I need sex, I do , but it’s more about intimately talking and connecting with a girl, the feelings, these are all things I’ve been denied..If you provide spinsters, overweight/promiscuous party women, Single mothers, and other sorts who are… I suspect… on some subconscious animalistic level…… TRYING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ME… I will CONTINUE to hold out from these types. I will also not have sex with an escort. You know all I am asking for is someone NORMAL, CUTE, and nice. My entire family will be devastated. They do not suspect (I have held this from them and lied as well) anything. It would come as a complete and utter shock. For anyone reading this… I am telling the truth …. If you have anything to say or ask please feel free to let me know. ThanThank you for the comments. However they will back the last 13-14 years of my life back. First - I have already tried online dating. It's a waste of time and nothing has come out of it. Second - A therepist is a waste of time and money. They want to make a client out of you. Third. What is "confidence"? It's a mental delusion. I belive in being humble and open minded. Not "full of fake confidence". The criminal sitting in prison exudes confidence. Think about that for a second. Forth - I will not date fat women or single mothers or promiscous women. I would rather have nothing. Fifth - 5 minutes ago I in the elevator at my luxury highrise on the beach. 2 pretty college girls in tiny black dresses got in and COMPLETELY IGNORED ME talking amoungst themselves about "Britney" and "party" and "remember when you turned 21" and "he he he". Again I did not exsist. Sixth - Suicide is an honorable way to die (Google: Seppuku). It is not weak. It takes courage. And I will commit suicide 12/13/12. more

Resolved Question: Andrew Koenig's Body Found in Vancouver Park. Your thoughts?

Actor Andrew Koenig -- best known for his role as Kirk Cameron's pal Boner on the '80s sitcom Growing Pains -- was found dead Thursday in Vancouver, B.C. At a press conference attended by Koenig's family Thursday evening, police said the actor's body was discovered "in a densely wood area ... unseen from the path" by "family and friends who initiated their own private search." (His father, Star Trek actor Walter Koenig, was among the people who joined in on the search.) Foul play is not suspected. "My son took his own life," his father Walter told reporters, adding that his son had been battling depression. "Don't ignore it; don't rationalize it," he said in regards to depression. "Extend a hand." See Us' photo tribute to stars gone too soon The 41-year-old actor had been missing since Feb. 16. After visiting pals in Vancouver, he never boarded his flight back to Los Angeles. (Prior to his trip, he reportedly had moved out of his Venice, Calif., apartment of nine years and sold a number of his belongings.) His parents phoned police after receiving a disturbing letter from their son.http://omg.yahoo.com/news/andrew-koenigs-body-found-in-vancouver-park/36485?nc Edit: RIP Andrew K. :( more

Voting Question: Safe, affordable Los Angeles neighborhoods?

What is a neighborhood that is safe, affordable and near all the major studios in LA? I will be moving out there with my roommate and I'm not familiar with the different neighborhoods. Here's some facts: -near major studios -she will be a school teacher -safe -affordableOkay people, please stop acting like I have no idea about how much things cost in California. Right now I have two roommates and we pay over $2000 for our TINY, did I mention tiny, two bedroom apartment that isn't in the best area. I know things aren't "cheap" I just wanted something that's in the $900-1200 dollar range as opposed to something in the $3000 range. And don't say it doesn't exist cause I've found some that are, and they aren't in a bad area. I was just hoping to get a locals perspective. I don't care if it's a small one bedroom, there is only going to be two of us and we can share. The part where I want to be "near major studios" is to work for them! I'm not trying to be an actress! more

Resolved Question: Does a rabbi have to get a license from each separate country or is it international?

For example if he lives in France, is his rabbinical license granted by the same authority as someone who lives in Los Angeles? If the French rabbi let's say moves to New York and was involved in something bad like the kidney transplant thing, and "they" (who is the they?) remove his practicing rights in New York, is it by the same organization who grants his license in France? How does it work and who are the agencies responsible? hope this makes sense! not sure how to word it.I was wondering if they had a central organization similar to the Vatican and Pope for example. For example what is then the RCA (Rabbinical Council of America) and the OU (Orthodox Union)? Do they have nothing to do with someone being licensed to practice as a rabbi? more
