Newspapers Los Angeles Questions asked

Resolved Question: How do I head off this disaster?

I took a new guy shooting. I am a teacher. Right now California is $20 Billion in debt, and half the California budget is Education. So they are firing teachers left and right. In Los Angeles, school rooms are linked and you have a "room partner." My new room partner is a very young guy (I am in my 30's, he is 25) who is a long term sub. He never had a Dad, he was raised by a Mom only, and she hated guns. He always wanted a gun, but the closest he ever came was violent video games. I am just the opposite. My Dad had me when he was a very, very old man. The joke was his seed was "worn out," by the time he had me, and that's why I am gay and very small, when my Dad was huge. He had me so late in life, my brother could be my father. My Dad was VERY old school, and would hit you HARD if you didn't obey him INSTANTLY. I was brought up to not mess around with guns. First a .22 rifle for many years, then occasionally a .22 pistol, and then a .410 shotgun. I didn't fire centerfire rifles or pistols until I was much, much older. My Dad wouldn't let me TOUCH his precious .45 until I was 16. Well, I may have goofed up. I let this guy shoot my .22 Pump action rifle, and my .22 Colt Woodman Target model. But then I had to show off and let him shoot my big guns. To my shock, he has remarkable hand to eye coordination (something I have never had) and had a natural ability with a shotguns. I had a plastic clay pidgeon thrower. I lashed it to a old broom handle with duct tape and was throwing the clay pidgeon far in the air. Boom. He hit them. First time with a shotgun. And it wasn't a 12 guage throwing a pound of lead. He was hitting them with my Dad's Fox BSE double barrel 20 guage. I would throw ten and then we would rest. He could hit 6 or 7 out of ten, and this was the first time he ever touched a gun. He loved my .30-30. We shot stacks of wet newspaper wrapped with duct tape, and a few 20 pound blocks of clay (I cleaned up EVERY SCRAP of trash). But what he REALLY loved was my gun I bought cheap off a guy who lost his job. For almost nothing, I bought this Spanish Star Super B (It's hard to tell WHAT this gun is---it has conflicting stamping on it, the original Spanish Stamping says one thing, the Importer, Century Arms says another) in .38 Super. This kid LOVES recoil. He REALLY got off on firing the .38 Super rapid fire (me 20 yards behind crouched behind the car to avoid sudden death). He wants to buy a .38 Super now. Well, I didn't want to tell him that .38 Super is an oddball gun that I only bought because I am cheap. He probably REALLY wants a .45. Secondly, I think his first gun should be a Ruger 10/22 rifle, or at the most a Ruger Mk III .22 pistol with the longest barrel they make. But he is really set in his mind and wants his first gun to be a big old .38 Super. I think the only thing that will stop him, is that as a substitute teacher, he is making almost no money (all the fired teachers are substituting, and they aren't working that many days a week. Before this long term job, this guy hadn't had much work.). In fact, on the ride back, we even discussed his moving into my house, as means of him saving money, and me getting money (I am cheap.) But I am concerned about him buying such a high powered gun with so little experience, and I am wondering how to discourage him. more

Resolved Question: .243 or .30-30 on Wild Boar?

I inherited both of my centerfire rifles. One is a Sears Model 53 (Winchester Model 70) in .243 with a 4x Scope. The other is a Sears Ted Williams .30-30. (My Dad REALLY liked Sears). Everything my Dad had regarding hunting was in this big wooden chest he had made for him in the Army. It had a 3x scope in it, but I could never quite figure out what for. Well, wrapped up in old newspaper and rubber bands so old they dissolved into rubber stains, was a side mount for the .30-30, with the screws (wrapped in another piece of paper, wrapped in masking tape) . I think I can convince a guy at my sportman's club to mount the scope for me for nothing. All the gunsmiths in Los Angeles have fled. The only gunsmith I know of is way over in the valley, is never open, and charges an arm and a leg to mount scopes. Anyway, now I can actually use the .30-30 for hunting (I suck with open sights). In California, wild boar is open year round. I have got a few places to hunt, according to people I have spoken to, nearby in the Los Padres National forest. Would I be better off with a .243 with a 4x scope, or a .30-30 with a 3x scope? For most people, a .243 is a longer range rifle, but I am not that good a shot. I figure anything past 125 yards and moving is pretty safe from me. I am leaning towards the .30-30. Also, what ammunition would I use? 150 grain? 170 grain? Or should I splurge and mail order some LeveRevolution .30-30 Ammo? I still have about four and a half boxes of (old) Ted Williams 170 grain ammunition my father left me. more

Resolved Question: English sexist adverts against males..?

I was born and raised in london, uk but have lived in los angeles, usa for about 3 years because of my dads job being relocated and i noticed that the uk is very sexist against males. I've been back in the uk for about 2 months and the other day I was watching adverts and about 5 adverts in a row were so sexist against males i was suprised. There was one about pills for females and in the advert a man was sitting next to some woman reading the newspaper and she pressed a button and he went flying out the window and it said "If only all pains were that easy to get rid of, well now there is, try these pills..." and honestly it seems like every advert is trying to make men look very stupid. Watch E4 at the moment 90% of the adverts on that channel are sexist against men. And all of my british girl friends (around my age, 19-25, not the older people, they are more sexist against females) but all the late teen girls are very sexist against men and constantly say things like "all men are pigs" and things similar to that. All of my american girl friends are the complete opposite, they love men and never talk bad about them! BUT living in america they have this type of mentality that if a man jokes about rape, women being chained to the kitchen, ect.. it's a joke when honestly it's not something to laugh about (one reason i'd never date an american man). and then when you contront americans on sexism against women and thinking men are more valuable and can do more in life they say "You should go the saudi arabia, china or anywhere in the middle east and see how good the females here have it" which is a even more sexist statement because they are comparing it and using it as an excuse like it's not bad! And a lot of americans say they would prefer sons to daughters. I think because they all expect their sons to be macho and on the football team when he could easily turn out to be a anorexic emo kid. and i've also heard a lot of american men say "I know how to control my woman" and things like that. I mean watch Family guy, There is always sexist comments about women, That would not be allowed on UK television. Living in both UK and USA this is something I have noticed Anybody else notice? more

Resolved Question: is this guy a retard or a idiot, I got this answer earlier to a question about Haiti?

I hate to awake you from your slumber but We are not helping Haiti and it wasn't a natural disaster, US troops are now controlling another country and you and many others just believe what you hear and do not do your ow research. The US caused the eartquake by H.A.A.R.P.! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI-sjTpbI… (Hharp secret weapon reviled in court) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6ZPGaGng… (HHARP) Earlier this week, a Spanish newspaper quoted Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez as saying the U.S. Navy caused the Haiti earthquake with a tectonic weapon. The Venezuelan media reported that the earthquake “may be associated with the project called HAARP, a system that can generate violent and unexpected changes in climate,” Press TV reported on January 21. Chavez cited a report from Russia’s Northern Fleet. According to the report, the U.S. Navy made a mistake with a secret “earthquake weapon” and the result was the Haitian earthquake. The Russians believe the intended target was Iran. “Though Russian Northern Fleets’ report was not confirmed by official sources, the comments attracted special attention in some US and Russian media outlets including Fox news and Russia Today,” writes Pragmatic Witness blog. “Russia Today’s report said that Moscow has also been accused of possessing and utilizing such weapons.” “Speaking on his weekly television show, Chavez opined that the U.S. mission in Haiti was a ruse to initiate military occupation,” the New York Daily News said. Venezuelan media “added that the U.S. government’s HAARP program, an atmospheric research facility in Alaska (and frequent subject of conspiracy theories), was also to blame for a Jan. 9 quake in Eureka, Calif., and may have been behind the 7.8-magnitude quake in China that killed nearly 90,000 people in 2008,” Fox News reported on Thursday. In 1997, former U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen made the following statement: Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves… So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations…It’s real, and that’s the reason why we have to intensify our [counterterrorism] efforts. Cohen was talking about longitudinal EM wave interferometers (LWI) technology (also known as “Tesla howitzers”). LWI waves can effortlessly pass through the ocean and earth. Experts claim LWI waves can in fact pass through the earth and emerge on the other side. The United States and Russia have possessed this technology for decades. Cohen would have you believe it is a technology that only terrorists would use. It depends on who you would call a terrorist. In 1966, Professor Gordon J. F. MacDonald, associate director of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at the University of California, Los Angeles, was a member of the President’s Science Advisory Committee. MacDonald published papers on the use of environmental-control technologies for military purposes, including “earthquake engineering” (he also wrote about weather manipulation, climate modification, polar ice cap melting or destabilization, ozone depletion techniques). “The revealed secrets surprised legislators,” writes Dr. Nick Begich. “Would an inquiry into the state of the art of electromagnetic manipulation surprise lawmakers today? They may find out that technologies developed out of the HAARP experiments in Alaska could deliver on Gordon MacDonald’s vision because leading-edge scientists are describing global weather as not only air pressure and thermal systems, but also as an electrical system.” Of course, we have no direct evidence the Pentagon used HAARP to touch off a massive earthquake in Haiti. The U.S., however, has exploited the earthquake to send the military to the stricken island nation. “They brazenly occupied Haiti without consulting the UN or the OAS (Organization of American States),” said Chavez earlier in the week. Bolivian President Evo Morales said Wednesday he would request an emergency UN meeting “to repudiate and reject this military occupation of the United States in Haiti.” “It’s not right the United States should use this natural disaster to invade and militarily occupy Haiti,” he told a press conference. “The unspoken mission of US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) with headquarters in Miami and US military installations throughout Latin America is to ensure the maintenance of subservient national regimes, namely US proxy governments, committed to the Washington Consensus and the neoliberal policy agenda,” writes Michel Chossudovsky. Source(s): “While US military personnel will at the outset be actively involved in emergency and disaster relief, this renewed US military presence in Haiti will be used to establish a foothold in the country as well pursue America’s strategic and geopolitical objectives in more

Resolved Question: Should I go to grad school or pursue my dreams to work in the entertainment industry?

Hello. I am a 22-year-old male from St.Louis, MO. I am contemplating my next move in life. In December 2010 I will graduate with my Bachelors. (I obtained my Associates at a trade school.) I don’t know what my next move should be. I am trying to decide should I go to grad school or move to a big city to try to work in the entertainment industry. In the entertainment industry I would like to do the following: appear in commercials, print ads, TV shows, and obtain small roles in movies. I am not attempting to become some huge star, but I would like to see could I make a living in the entertainment industry. Long term I would like to have the proper knowledge base, and experiences to manage others careers, and potentially create my own agency full of aspiring talent. Once again short term I just want to appear in a couple of TV shows, host a show, obtain movie roles, and do some commercial modeling. I am contemplating moving to the following places… Los Angeles, Chicago, or Atlanta. I know it’s kind of an odd combination of places to try to get into the entertainment industry. The reason for LA is because it is just a given, but the downside it’s way too expensive for me. Chicago is a little more affordable, closer to home, my best friend said I could live with him until I get on my feet, but the downside is it doesn’t have all the opportunities that LA could give me. Atlanta is an option because one of my best friends is moving there to try to get into the entertainment industry, therefore we can go through our struggles together, but I don’t see really that much opportunity there. Graduate school is a sure way to increase my job marketability, and make more money. I could go to grad school for the next two years and be done by the age of 25. I am scared of failing, and I don’t want to waste time that’s why grad school is an option because it is a safer choice. Facts: I am getting older, so it is important to be working on a solid career I don’t have the extra money lying around to waste making a bad decision (I have student loans that I will have to pay back) I have enrolled in acting classes I plan on getting headshots done I hate living in St.Louis I don’t want to be too broke; financially I am doing ok, and have a lot of nice things that I enjoy I have been working on trying to speak with anyone that knows anything about the entertainment industry so I can learn from them People always say I should go for it, and that it seems like I would work in the entertainment industry I am no fool, I know the odds of making it in Hollywood are not ideal, so it’s not a bad idea to have a back up plan I am willing to put in the hard work and get a million rejections for that one yes I was selected to be in an ad ran in a major newspaper in St.Louis, the ad ran more than 10 times I would like to at least be wealthy by the age of 26 The point of the post is the following: I would like any and everyone’s opinion on what I should do Advice on how to get into the entertainment industry would be great Best city based off the basic information provided would be for me to move to Good people to get into contact with Any advice, input, or commentary would be appreciated!!! (I know one can say why not do both… School and pursue the entertainment gig, but I can’t afford out of state tuition. In addition, I want to give which ever my choose as much as my attention as possible.) Thank you for your time and assistance in this matter. more

Resolved Question: Is this a good start to a book??? Romance/drama?

There are many types of guys in the world. The jocks, the business-is-everything guys, and the flat out annoying jerks. I have let them tear me up numerous times before. I am done with that. Men are very cruel. Let’s just say I really don’t need or want a man in my life, with my father as an acception. I stand in a huge mass of noisy people. Busy moms telling their kids to be quiet and dads shaking their heads. Of course, it would not be a public airport without couples holding hands walking side by side, telling each other how much they love each other. I’m trying to get to Los Angeles where my parents live. A faint ringing sound alerts me and I scramble to find my cell phone in my purse. “Hello” I say as I flip it open. “Hi honey, your mother wanted me to call you and make sure your flight is still on time. You know how your mother can be. Please just tell me so I can assure her you will make it out okay to our house.” I could have guessed it would be my parents calling. I swear my mom is paranoid, nervous, and worried about everything. “Dad, I just got past security so I haven’t even looked yet. I will call you back when I check it and please tell mom to not worry. So a little snow came, big whoop!” I say a little bit annoyed. “Okay Katie but your mother will not be too happy. I understand though. She cooks some mean meals and is wonderful but…..well, we all have our flaws.” He chuckles into the phone. “Ha ha. Thanks dad. I have to go but I will call you soon. Love you. Bye.” As I close my cell phone something catches my eye. But it’s gone as soon as it appears. Katie, how much coffee have you had? Apparently not enough! I start walking past hurried travelers to a coffee shop. I stare at the menu long enough to memorize it. As I step up to the counter I ask for a large hazelnut coffee. “Anything else?” the thin, pale man asks. “No thanks.” “Okay that will be $1.75.” I hand him a crisp five dollar bill and he hands me my change. Walking out, I grab a newspaper. The big screens that have departures and arrivals information say the gate I need to get to gate B18. Watching the happy couples, I stagger over to my gate. I scan the area, finding a seat. A girl about 16 years old is on my left, looking out the window. “Is this seat taken?” I ask. “No, it is just a lonely empty seat that has been torn apart in every way I can think of,” She replies. I don’t reply because, well, I cannot think of anything to say back to that. As I look out the window I can see the sun rise in the east, glistening on the snow. Sipping my coffee is always a good thing. It gives me time to think. To think about anything and everything. I know one thing, I won’t be thinking about men. Oh! My parents! I forgot to call them, so I go to the desk where a tall blonde is working on a computer. Just to make sure the boards with departures and arrivals were right, I ask her if my flight is on time. “Is the 8:05 flight to Los Angeles still on time?” The woman looks at her computer and replies, “It is delayed for at least a few hours, sorry.” “Okay thank you.” ****. I dial my parents’ number in my phone. “Hello?” “Hey Dad, my flight has been delayed at least a few hours. Hopefully the snow will stop soon.” “Oh man, is there another flight leaving to somewhere else and then maybe a flight to L.A.?” he asks. “No, I don’t think so. None of the planes can take off because of all the snow.” “Alright well hopefully you can get here soon.” “Yeah. I will call you if it gets delayed more or if we leave earlier.” “Okay thanks. Bye honey.” “Bye Dad.” What am I supposed to do for at least a few hours in an airport? I go back to my seat and finish the rest of my coffee. The teenager that was sitting next to me stares at the ceiling ignoring me completely and suddenly says something. “Have you ever wanted something so badly when you know you can’t have it?” she asks. I look around wondering if she is talking to me. “Uh not really,” I answer. “No really, have you ever wanted anything, anything at all that you knew you were not supposed to have or able to have?” She says. “Well, when I was little I wanted a doll that I knew I couldn’t have because both of my parents lost their jobs for about a year and we didn’t have extra spending money.” I look into her deep red eyes. She smiles like she wished that had happened to her. The girl’s long brown hair hangs down her body. “Yeah,” She says. A long pause whistled through the air and waited. I got up to get more coffee and a sandwich. The girl looks at me with sad eyes. “I am going to get another coffee and a sandwich, do you want to come with?” “Yes please,” the girl replies. So we walk into the same little coffee shop and I buy us both small cappuccinos. She thanks me and sits down at a table, I along with her. “I never got your name,” I ask, “My name is Katie Irving.” “Nice to meet you Katie, my name is Rachel.” “It is a pleasure, Rachel.” “So where are you from?" “ more

Resolved Question: What is the CHEAPEST newspaper to in LOS ANGELES COUNTY to file a DBA?

I'm not looking for a middleman filing service. I've already been to the courthouse and I've got my paperwork. I just need the name a a newspaper that can publish it for me. I have over 50 names but I have no idea how to find the cheapest one. I've been told it will cost me $35-$50 to publish the record for 4 weeks. I've already paid the filing costs, so there's no way I'm paying some middle man $100. more

Resolved Question: Do I HAVE to have a car in LA?

I am just graduating film school and am in debate- Should I move to LA or New York? I finished up a prestigious internship with a major newspaper in the midwest, and have writing samples. I want to be a screenwriter/actor, and do have a reel of my produced work. Would I be better off in Los Angeles or New York? I have been hearing different things. I do not have a car and hate driving. I do have a license, but I just am not a driver. I have heard its hard to survive in LA without a car, however plenty of my friends have moved out there and gotten along fine on public transit, it just took longer. It seems to me more film work is out in LA, not New York. And prices are still cheaper in LA. Any advice? more

Resolved Question: Latinos at the church and across the community are shaken does an illegal have the right to break the law?

Latinos at the church and across the community are shaken does an illegal have the right to break the law he was selling food because he was undocumented and couldn't find a job the church expressed problems with street vendors for over a year, why do many Churches feel illegals should be allowed to break the law ? Is the Church ignoring the laws of America thereby injecting their own laws based on their teaching of the Church supersudes laws on earth and such laws in America ?The Catholic Diocese of Charlotte is looking into why a local priest asked a sheriff's deputy to arrest a man selling food on church property. Carlos Ramirez, 40, identified as an illegal immigrant via the jail's 287(g) program, is now in the process of being deported after his Nov. 15 arrest on trespassing charges at Our Lady of the Assumption. Ramirez, an unlicensed street vendor from Mexico, was selling corn-on-the-cob to parishioners of the Shamrock Drive church following a Spanish language mass. Church officials said the Rev. Philip Scarcella was wrong to ask the deputy to arrest Ramirez without first checking with the diocese. "A policy wasn't followed here and we really regret that Mr. Ramirez was arrested," said David Hains, spokesman for the diocese. "We regret also that it looks like he's going to be deported." The incident comes as the national debate over illegal immigration once again heats up. The Catholic church has been a leading voice in the push for immigration reform that would legalize millions of illegal immigrants. Latinos at the church and across the community are shaken. "The role of the church is to be ministering to a community that now more than ever needs hope," said Jess George, interim director of the Latin American Coalition. "And it's worrisome when trust may be broken when there isn't enough concern given to the immigrant experience." Calls to speak with officials at Our Lady of the Assumption church were referred to the diocese. Hains said that the Shamrock Drive church in East Charlotte has had problems with street vendors for over a year. Scarcella has been concerned about the safety of the food and traffic problems that arise because of the number of vendors, Hains said. Vendors had been warned multiple times, including receiving a written notice that they could be arrested. But Janet Contreras, a member of the church originally from Peru, said the church should have considered that Ramirez was selling food because he was undocumented and couldn't find a job. "He wasn't outside pointing a gun at people demanding money," said Contreras, who said she is changing churches. "Yes, it's private property, but it's a church." The Catholic Church has long supported immigrants and helped to lead protests around the country. In 2005, the U.S. Catholic bishops launched the Justice for Immigrants campaign. Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles wrote last week in a national editorial that the country must pass reform "that better balances our country's need for a stable work force with the orderly flow of immigrants." Ramirez, who is from Mexico, entered the country legally in June 2008 on a temporary work visa, officials said. He was supposed to return in December 2008. He is being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail on a $500 state bond and a $5,000 immigration bond. Julia Rush, spokesperson for the sheriff's department, said Ramirez will be turned over to immigration officials once his state charge is satisfied. Ramirez told a local reporter for the Spanish-language newspaper Mi Gente that he moved to the United States to help with rebuilding efforts in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He moved to Charlotte afterward in search of jobs. He became a street vendor after failing to find work in construction or restaurants, according to Patricia Ortiz of Mi Gente. Ortiz, who met with Ramirez in jail on Tuesday, said Ramirez was almost crying about being deported. He didn't understand why he was arrested for selling food. But, Ortiz said, he says he has forgiven the priest. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/local/story/1119341.html more

Resolved Question: How come Sanctuary Movement Started for Illegals But what about people who have legal problem but want a?

How come Sanctuary Movement Started for Illegals But what about people who have legal problem but want a a better life if their crimes are minor why is there not any Sanctuary cities for them ? Officials at a Los Angeles Roman Catholic church say construction is nearly complete on living quarters meant for illegal immigrant families. Our Lady Queen of Angels, also known as La Placita, is one of the first churches in the country to participate in a movement designed to give sanctuary to illegal immigrants and push for immigration reforms, The Los Angeles Times reported Friday. Here, we're taking our concerns about the nation's broken immigration system to a new level, the Rev. Richard Estrada said. Families broken by broken laws and churches broken by it all, Estrada told the newspaper. You hear about it happening in churches across the city. A family must meet eligibility requirements before seeking sanctuary in a church, synagogue or mosque participating in the effort, the Times said. Eligible families must be targeted for deportation, have a good work record in the United States and include children who were born U.S. citizens. The families must also agree to take their story to the news media. The same thing can be said low risk offenders Families broken by broken laws and churches broken by it all. Resolved Question: I think Roman's suffered enough. Don't you?

Polanski Agreed To Pay Sex Victim $500,000 17 hours ago | WENN | Jailed moviemaker Roman Polanski agreed to pay the girl he had unlawful sex with $500,000 (GBP333,300) 16 years ago, according to newly-released court documents. Papers obtained by the Los Angeles Times newspaper suggest the director agreed to pay Samantha Geimer as part of a civil settlement after she filed suit against him in 1988, accusing the director of sexual assault, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and seduction. In October 1993, Polanski agreed to pay Geimer $500,000 with interest, according to the settlement documents, and was given two years to pay up. The papers suggest Geimer's attorneys had to fight for the full settlement after the director missed the 1995 deadline. It is not made clear if Polanski paid up in full. Geimer was just 13 when Polanski plied the aspiring model with alcohol and drugs and then had sex with her in a bedroom at his Chinatown star Jack Nicholson's house. Polanski was arrested in Los Angeles and pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, before fleeing to France in 1978. On Saturday, he was arrested in Zurich, Switzerland in connection with the 31-year-old case and is now fighting extradition to the U.S. » http://www.imdb.com/news/ni1043635/ more

Resolved Question: How does a person like Van Jones become nominated by Obama?

If Obama isn't Far Left then how in the world could he nominate someone w/ such a radical past as Van Jones? Mr. Jones was arrested during the rioting in Los Angeles in 1992 that followed the acquittal of the police officers who beat Rodney King. Mr. Jones spoke of that experience in a 2005 interview with a newspaper in the San Francisco Bay area: "I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28, and then the verdicts came down on April 29," he told the East Bay Express. "By August, I was a communist." Mr. Jones attributed his conversion to the people he met during his incarceration: "I met all these radical young people of color, I mean really radical, communists and anarchists," he told the East Bay Express. "It was like 'this is what I need to be a part of.' I spent the next 10 years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary." http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/09/13/how_could_obama_have_hired_van_jones_98293.html more

Resolved Question: Isn't this the kind of guy the UK needs? Bet we'd get "Diversity" representing us - how diverse are 6 blacks?!?

Backgrounder: Marko Perkovic Croatian-based singer Marko Perkovic (who is also called Thompson) and his band Thompson are known for singing nationalistic songs about Croatia and publicly supporting the Ustashe, a fascist, pro-Nazi regime in Croatia responsible for murdering tens of thousands of Jews, Serbs, and Roma from 1941-1945. Various media accounts report that Thompson’s concerts in Europe begin with the traditional “war cry” of the Ustashe. Concertgoers, comprised mostly of young people, many wearing black shirts with Ustashe insignia and carrying banners with anti-Serb and anti-Roma rhetoric, often respond with Nazi salutes. Ustashe paraphernalia is allegedly sold at the concerts, as well. At his concerts, Thompson also reportedly plays a song that relates the killing of Serbs at the Jasenovac death camp, where tens of thousands of people were killed by the Ustashe during World War II. Perkovic’s Appearances: A Record of Nazi Symbols and Salutes At a June 2007 concert in Zagreb, Perkovic reportedly opened his act by shouting a traditional Ustashe slogan, which was met with Nazi salutes from fans. The concert, attended by over 40,000 people, was aired on state-owned television. In November 2003, a Thompson concert scheduled in Amsterdam was cancelled amidst accusations of Perkovic giving the Nazi salute at previous concerts and his band’s alleged sympathy with Nazi “ideas.” The concert was relocated to Rotterdam, but Perkovic himself was banned from singing. In responding to the cancellation, Perkovic allegedly told a Croatian newspaper, “It is all to blame on the Jews. I have nothing against them and I did nothing to them. I know that Jesus Christ also did nothing against them, but still they hanged him on the cross. So what can I expect as a small man?” Also, in September 2003, Thompson reportedly performed at a Croatian soccer stadium and gave Nazi salutes. In addition, in August 2003, Thompson organized a public demonstration to honor the Ustashe in Slavonski Brod, a Croatian town. According to media reports, at a reception at the Croatian capitol honoring the national handball team in February 2003, Perkovic allegedly shouted a slogan used by Croatian Nazis in World War II, prompting dozens in the crowd to give a Nazi salute. Then, Prime Minister Ivica Racan condemned the use of Nazi slogans and salutes at that event. Perkovic Denies Supporting Concentration Camp Atrocities On the Web site of Thompson’s representative, Syndicate Productions, Perkovic claims that his songs are “about God, family and the homeland.” He states that “the worst of all false accusations flung” at him is that he wrote and performs a song commemorating the atrocities at the Jasenovac concentration camp during World War II. Perkovic denies writing or performing the song and states that he is a musician, not a politician. Response to Thompson’s Concerts by the Jewish and Serbian Community Representatives of the American and international Jewish community, as well as the Serbian community, have spoken out against Thompson/Perkovic. Croatian Jewish groups have come together to oppose Perkovic’s appearances, especially when Croatian authorities did not condemn Perkovic’s June 2007 concert, which attracted thousands of fans, including members of the Croatian parliament. In November 2007, Perkovic and his band scheduled several concerts in cities throughout the United States and Canada, including New York, Cleveland, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Jose, Toronto, and Vancouver. On November 2 and 3, 2007, Perkovic and his band played in New York City. There were no reports of pro-Ustashe symbols or Nazi salutes at those concerts. Although two venues in Toronto cancelled Perkovic’s scheduled concert there, he did play in a city outside of Toronto on November 4. According to The Star, a Canadian paper, fans were asked not to bring Ustashe memorabilia to that concert.
