I’m in a bit of a situation. My mom has asked me about some advice on what she should do. I’ll try to keep this short, without omitting major details. She has had a somewhat sour relationship with her stepbrother, “John.” It’s kind of one of those situations where “I’m not going to call you, but I don’t mind seeing you.” My family, less John, has inherited through my mom’s dad, a cabin and 55 acres of land, where we hunt fish and spend time unwinding from city life. Similarly, John has a cabin in deep creek, Maryland with a boat and a place on the lake. He has spent many hunting seasons at our camp in the past, but not once in my lifetime have we been invited to his place in Maryland. He has since had to sell his camp due to relocating to another state. John has now been inviting himself to our camp, and even went so far as to unscrew the lock on the door to let himself in when we weren’t there. Now he is asking for a key to the place, but we confronted him about our tentativeness towards the situation, and how he has never made an effort to include us in his weekends at Maryland. Now it has only lead to a more distant relationship – not that it really matters because we never spoke in the first place. Me and my boyfriend are planning to drive from Maryland to Bar Harbor, Maine. We are making a stop in Boston on the way up to split up the drive, but are driving the full way back. Now, when we hear "Uncle Tom", we think of a sell-out, a do-gooder..but why? because of a character from an influential tale in american history, who is this person? that's the focal point of today's thread..examining the original Uncle Tom..as always, feel free to leave any comments Josiah Henson was born into slavery on June 15, 1789 in Maryland, and was sold multiple times by the age of 18. In 1830, he had saved up enough money to buy his freedom ($350), but his master told him the price had been raised to $1,000, so he remained enslaved. Due to the feeling of being cheated and rumors of him being sold (which would break up his family), Josiah escaped with his wife and four children to Canada, and he would form a community teaching other ex-slaves how to be farmers. Throughout his life, Henson watched the way masters treated slaves, and he studied their reactions towards different types of behavior. By doing so, he learned that if he was loyal, and provided consistent quality behavior to his master, he’d stay out of trouble and possibly become a better person. Josiah Henson’s autobiography inspired the character of “Uncle Tom” in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”..the events of his life would also mold a stereotype for some modern day African Americans referred to as an “Uncle Tom”, for basically being too eager to please another race, or selling out.
