Resolved Question: Should I get a Lawyer?

I was recently pulled over for not having a front tag on my car(Maryland) by a State Trooper, he tells me that my license is suspended by another state which makes it suspended in my home state of MD. I was given 3 tickets one for the tag and 2 for driving on a suspended license(big charges). I had no clue as to what it could have been because I had only ever been stopped once in PA. Turns out that I paid the only ticket I had ever received late which they auto suspended my license in PA and MD. I called PA and had them fax over the receipt to MD and my license was reinstated in less than 5 minutes. Unknown to me, I should have faxed the receipt to MD after I paid the ticket which made it look as if I was still suspended in PA, but I wasn't. I went to the MVA and was given my license back that same day. -The MVA gave me a paper stating that they tried to send me a letter, but it had been returned to them by the postal authority, so I was unaware of the suspension. I now have to face 2 driving on a suspended license charges and a no tag citation. The last ticket I received was the one from PA for not obeying a traffic control device (non moving) and the one before that was over 10 years before that. I have 0 points on my license.. Should I seek representation? I'm extremely upset and stressed that I could go to jail or something.I can afford a lawyer, the cost is not a problem. I just don't want to be convicted of a crime because I made such a small mistake by not send a receipt to MD. more

Resolved Question: Is there a certain amount of speed tickets you can receive before getting points?

Resolved Question: Speeding Ticket Penalties? How many points on license? Class?

I am currently on a provisional license and i got pulled over the other day for speeding, going 70mph in a 50 zone. That's 20 over the speed limit, leaving me with a $160 fine. I was just curious to know how many points this would give me on my license and if I have to take a drivers improvement class or anything because of this. I live in Maryland and as far as I know, 20 mph over the speed limit is not considered reckless driving, i believe it is 25, someone please correct me if I am wrong. more

Resolved Question: Accident with a learners permit in Maryland?

Not long ago I got myself into an accident. I was parked on the fire lane in a shopping center Then a security for the shopping center came by my window telling me to move my vehicle My mom was right out the bank at the atm machine. So trying to not get in any trouble I decide to move the car myself and instead of stepping on the brakes and switching gear. I accidentally stepped on the gas and switched gear causing me to reverse into the security's car. My car was damage really bad the trunk was pushed in and the back glass was shattered. His car Ford F-150 only has scratches on the bumper. My mom and him switch insurances etc.. The police showed up because someone report they heard a gunshot (which as false) They didn't do much except just asked me if I had my learners permit and looked at it for 1 sec and handed it back to me. There was no police report of the accident. The insurance company wanted to talk to me alone on a one to one phone conversation that was recorded and I told them everything truthfully. I wanted to know if I could still get my Provisional license without my 9 months being reset. If it didn't get reset I'd be able to get it in May. On the MVA website it says if convicted of or PBJ or given a moving violation the 9 months would reset. I never got any tickets or been convicted like going to court etc.. but my dad told me that my insurance will go up since I already have an accident. He says the MVA don't know about it but only the insurance does because we live in the same house. He tells me not to worry but I'm more than worried. I'm so confused I'm only 16 and have no idea how this process works. Would the MVA know about the accident since there was not a police report? Does the insurance notify the MVA of the accident? Would I still be able to get my provisional license in time? more

Resolved Question: Do I have to renew my Maryland ID when I turn 21 to be able to drink in bars?

I have a vertical ID and it has that red square around my picture that means under 21... Do bars and liquor stores look at the date or just the orientation/the red square? Because when I turn 21 I'll still have this ID until January when it expires...do I have to get a new one to be able to get into bars and get alcohol? I've heard that you may need a horizontal ID that doesn't have that red square...but is that true? What about in DC? Thanks(: more

Voting Question: What happens if you cause an accident with a learners permit?

Last week I got into a accident. Here's what happened: I was taking my mom to the bank so she could withdraw some money so I thought it be a quick 2 min thing but in the process a guy comes up to my window and asked if I could move my car because I was in the fire lane.. Apparently he was the security patrol for the shopping center. My mom was not in the car at that moment and I got very nervous so I tried moving the car myself to prevent any further consequences and instead of stepping on the brakes and switch gear I stepped on the gas pedal and reverse and hit the security patrol truck. The damaged on my car was pretty bad the back glass broke and the trunk got pushed in. His car just had a scratch on the bumper (he had a big truck) So my mom and the security guy exchanged insurances. Then about 5 min later police showed up because somebody reported there was a gun involved (which was false) He just asked my if I had a license and I told him "I have a permit" I showed it too him an looked at it for like 1 min and handed it back to me. I wanted to know if my 9 months reset before I can get my provisional license because of the accident. My mom told me nothing will happen because your still learning how to drive. Currently I'm in my 7th month of having my permit. On http://www.mva.maryland.gov/Driver-Services/Apply/permit.htm It says ".f the applicant has been convicted of or given a PBJ for a moving violation, they are required to hold them permit for a minimum of 9 months following the most recent date the individual was convicted of, or granted a PBJ for a moving violation, and meet the rest of the above mentioned GLS requirements before they are eligible to take a skills driving test." so is an accident a moving violation.Could I get more details into a moving violation? more

Resolved Question: Vanity License Plates In MARYLAND. Help?

I'm a recently discharged Army veteran and just moved back to Maryland. I'm going to the MVA on Wednesday to register my car and want a custom license plate. However, I also want a veteran license plate for serving in Afghanistan. Can I get both or is it one or the other? Like can I get a veteran license plate (the ones that say Afghanistan campaign at the bottom and have the campaign medal on the left) and have custom numbers/letters on it? Thanks! Before anybody says anything, I already checked all over the MVA website and couldn't find anything, I called them and they had me on hold for about 45 minutes until I gave up, and they still haven't responded to my emails. more

Resolved Question: Can I drive in my home state of Maryland if I have a restriction on Virginia?

Without getting into too much detail, my license is restricted in Virginia due to a DUI. I am only attending school in Virginia so my permanent address is in Maryland and my license is from Maryland. I went to the Virginia dmv to get a hard copy of my "restricted license" only to be immediately turned around because I am not a permanent resident of this state and do not plan to ever be. I was told to either return to court about it or contact the Maryland MVA (our version of a dmv). I wad told I'm ok in Maryland. Any advice? more

Resolved Question: how to take care of an old traffic ticket from Camden, NJ?

About 2 years ago I received a traffic ticket in Camden,NJ right on the bridge. (It was so bogus the speed changes on the bridge from 45 to 25 and as an out of towner I didn't notice since I was just following traffic and since I was in the back he picked me off and pulled me over.) Anyways it's years later and I was pretty sure I took care of the ticket until I got pulled over a few weeks ago for something else and the officer told me my Maryland driver's license was SUSPENDED which has now manifested in a bench warrant! He was really understanding and let me go (never knew about the warrant till I called nj reparations) but when I called the MVA they told me it was from that same ticket in NJ. Now I have called Maryland reparations, the NJ MVA and NJ reparations and everyone keeps telling me to call Camden Municipal Court. Problem is I have been calling them for the last month and NOBODY answers. I've tried faxing them with my information so they can call. The people from NJ reparations even said they felt sorry for anyone who has a ticket from that court because they are the worst to fix. I even spoke with an attorney for some insight and even he said they don't respond to his letters and they never pick up the phone. Since i live in PA now he advised me to just go down there and take care of it but I need to bring quite a bit of money so I can post bond (whatever that means) and pay the ticket. He said if I don't have enough that they will arrest me and make me stay till I can see a judge. Needless to say i'm terrified as I've never committed a crime in my life (i'm going to be a teachers for goodness sake so my record is clean). I have no problem going there with my fiance but we don't know how much to bring and i'm really worried that we won't have enough and I'll just be arrested and nobody will answer so I can try to to find out how much I need. I'm just trying to see if anyone has some insight. Maybe you've gone through this before being out of state and dealing with Camden Municipal court, but how did you get it taken care of?? Thanks!!!! more

Resolved Question: Suspended licenese in Maryland!?

Okay so my liscense was suspended for not taking a drivers improvement class because I had gotten a speeding ticket. It was suspended without me knowing (because I had moved and didn't receive it in the mail, mva does not forward mail) and I didn't find out until I was involved in an accident 1 year later! I had no idea. I have a court date coming up to see what happens. I know I could face up to a year in jail and 1000 dollars in fine but I hear that's not too likely. What should really happen for the first offense and me being unaware?? more

Resolved Question: Ticket before six days from converting to a full license?

It was one of those days when everything went wrong..... Today while driving in Virginia I was attempting one of those iffy- "should I speed up or just hit the breaks" move. Like an idiot, I sped up and passed the red without realizing that a policeman was watching the whole thing. I got pulled over right away and got a myself a nice little $60 ticket. For a few hours I didn't consider this a big deal until I remembered that I was holding a provisional license from Maryland. The Maryland law states that if a provisional license holder gets convicted of a moving violation, he/she must attend a drivers improvement program. I was worried that I would be sent to those programs but when I saw my license, it stated that it will Expire on 01/ 08/ 2013. Only eight days away. I checked my ticket and saw that the hearing is on Feb 27th. So my question is, should I just wait paying the fee (I don't want to go to a hearing) so that I can be convicted AFTER the MVA convert my license to a full license? Or what should I do? more

i am 16 years old with a valid learner's permit for Maryland. i got into an accident involving another car last week, where i pulled out in front of them and was hit in the side. Resolved Question: What do I need to do to sell a car in Maryland to a buyer in Delaware?

I am a private seller in Maryland trying to sell my 2007 car. I have an interested buyer, who has seen the car and is ready to make an offer, but he is from Delaware. I've looked at Maryland's MVA site and Delaware's DMV site for requirements for buyers and sellers, but the two are slightly different. So far I know I have to have my info and the buyer's name and address on the back of the title, as well as a notarized bill of sale (since the car is less than 7 years old and less than book value). I know he can't drive it away without insurance and license plates on the car (whether temporary or not). Delaware also seems to require inspection, application for title, and some other things. What are the steps to make this transaction, and which DMV does it have to happen in? Do we (the buyer and the seller) have to be at the DMV at the same time? I'd even be willing to let him take the car with my license plates and mail them back to me after he gets his. I'd really like some advice from someone who's gone through this process before. more

Resolved Question: Totalled vehicle+switched over insurance to new car, old car's registration now suspended...Help!?

Soooo I lived in Maryland and had a Nissan, someone hit my Nissan and it ended up being totaled. This happened the end of July and a few days later, I moved to Virginia to attend school. I ended up getting a Corolla. I switched my insurance from the Nissan to the Corolla thinking the insurance company would pick up the Nissan shortly after that. Well we are in November and the insurance company took 4 MONTHS to process my claim. They are FINALLY picking up the Nissan tomorrow. I just got a letter from MVA saying that my Nissan's registration has been suspended and that I have to return my plates. It also said that a penalty fee will be assessed for $150 for the first 30 days the Nissan hasn't been insured, plus $7/day for every day thereafter. I did the math and that's about $660! I do not think I should have to pay all this money because the insurance company screwed me over by failing to put my claim through. My claims agent even said that he forgot about my case! I haven't been driving the Nissan this whole time. Do you think that if I provide proof that I had been driving another car (Corolla title and insurance policy info), I will not have to pay these outrageous fees? I also have to submit a letter from the insurance company saying that the vehicle was totaled and the date of the accident, so they would know how long it hasn't been insured for.@fire4511: Do two witnesses have to sign the form in that link? I can get one of my neighbors to sign it, but I never see my others too often and don't know them very well. Unfortunately, it is still drivable, so those other options won't work :( more
