Beach Vacations Gulf Mexico Questions asked

Resolved Question: I am vacationing in San Diego & went to the beach; the lifeguards saw me in my bikini & said the beach closed?

....because of that oil spill that is causing so many problems. I must be confused; I thought the oil spill happened in the gulf of Mexico, and I don't think it has reached all the way around to San Diego. Also, I saw plenty of people on the beach, and they looked like they were having a great time. I mentioned this to the lifeguards, and they said all those people were just taking part in the oil clean-up on the beach, that they were highly trained specialists. I hardly think that a four year old with a plastic pail and shovel is a specialist doing oil clean up on a beach, but they would not let me in, despite my protests. What is going on here? Is that oil spill story reaching San Diego a total lie, and if so, why would they tell it to me? What can I do about this situation? I really want sun myself up, and I don't get much sun back at my trailer in Mississippi. more

Resolved Question: What is a good vacation spot this summer?

Since there was an oil spill in the gulf of mexico, my mom doesn't want to go to the Caribbean this summer because shes worried about the water. (will the oil spill affect the Caribbean?) So i guess we can't go anywhere tropical, but what are some good places by the ocean in the us? We are already going to florida in august, so that doesn't work. But, i've been thinking about north carolina or california. I want to go to LA but is the water warm by there? also whats the nearest beach by la? more

Resolved Question: Do you think by July/August the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill will shut down beaches in Key West and Bahmas?

I paid for a vacation package to Florida and planned of driving through the keyes. We also will be vacationing in the Grand Bahamas on Freeport to go snorkeling / swimming in the water. Do you think the oil (that is gushing thousands of gallons of oil per day) will reach that far and ruin the coral reef? I Am scared now! more

Resolved Question: Why is the ocean starting to smell like gasoline/oil?

So I went to the Gulf beaches for a day of fun in the sun and I wore coconut-flavored sunscreen....for some fresh smell of the beach..... Instead...I could have sworn I was at a gasoline station.....The more I went into the surf, the more I felt like I had gasoline all over my body.....then I looked at the water and it was filled with these red particles.... WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? What was this stuff?! in the Gulf of Mexico? Now I need a vacation from my vacationBesides I thought Moses turned the water into blood, not into OIL Is this a new Passover story where Obama is the Pharoh of Egypt and the religious right casted a plague to turn the Gulf Water into oil? more

Resolved Question: Why isn't US Govt stopping the Gulf of Mexico BP oil spill?

The US Government is letting this oil corporation take as much time as they please to clean up an oil spill and the oil is still spilling!!!!! Some predict it could be 12 times the Exxon Valdez spill....this is catastrophic to Louisiana wetlands....it's dangerous to go to the beach as well.......BILLIONS of gallons of crude oil dumped into the Ocean...... And the oil is still spinning because the CEOs of BP are on vacation playing golf. What kind of the Government does nothing about this???? Why aren't we taking action? BP can do whatever it wants????The problem is that Conservative Republican oil corporations seem to treat their CEOs like Gods and we should just pray that the BP executives do something when they come back from their vacations to save hundreds of millions of people who rely on clean water to live and who share this planet more

Resolved Question: Has the oil from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill made it to the Florida beaches yet?

I live in New Orleans and I have a vacation planned in June to go to Panama City Beach, Florida. I was wondering if anyone knows the condition of the beach's water, sand and smell. more

Resolved Question: Drill Baby Drillers...will you support your favored industry by vacationing on the...?

Gulf of Mexico this year? BP needs your support but right now they need your dollars more than ever. BP will soon release a statement asking all Drill Baby Drill supporters to vacation on the beautiful oil soaked beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. They ask that you spend your dollars to feed the area's tourism industry so BP shareholders will not have to pay damages, those people really need their millions and millions of dollars to keep their lavish lifestyles from becoming too bleak. Yes Drill Baby Drillers, go to the fish market on the Gulf and buy your kids a dead fish with a belly full of oil...let your children play with the dead fish on the oil soaked beaches, oil washes off no biggie!!! Charter a boat and take the family out in the Gulf so the kids can shout with glee at the pretty sheen of oil covering the surface of the water!!!! Try your hand at the latest craze in fishing called "scoop the dead fish off the surface with a net"!!! Or will you all just avoid the Gulf of Mexico like the plague? God forbid any of you Drill Baby Drillers come face to face with the stark reality of the environmental risks that come along with a blind drive to earn massive monetary profits at the expense of the environment!! Yes you all certainly should go where the beaches are still pristine and beautiful in order to properly preserve the fantasy world you all live in. Turn those blind eyes away from the devastation and loss of life created by the Industry you fully support...just as you all turned a blind eye to the devastation and loss of life created through your support of pre-emptive war in Iraq. Cover your eyes, cover your ears and cover your mouth...what say ye? more

Resolved Question: What would be a good vacation spot for my family & I this summer?

I will be a senior in the fall so my family wants to go on one last big vacation before i'm off on my own. I get to pick anywhere i want (in the states). It would be both my parents, my 14 year old brother, myself, and possibly one of my friends. Being a teenage girl, of course i want to go somewhere warm to get a good tan. However, my brother & father would not be very excited to be on a beach 24/7. A few places i had in mind were: California (L.A., Orange Beach, Etc), Florida (disney world, or panama), Mexico (Cabo-ish area?), Myrtle Beach or Gulf Shores. I need some help! more

Resolved Question: Are water shoes really necessary for the Gulf of Mexico?

Im going on a vacation to Marco Island, FL. My mom mentioned buying beach shoes for swiming and wading in the Gulf of Mexico due to sea glass, Jellyfish, Sea Urchins and whatever else in the sand... is that really a danger, or is she just being paranoid? Would you reccomend them? more

Resolved Question: My 5 year old has two different rashy symptoms after beach and pool time?

I am posting this in both Health and Parenting. My 5 year old has been in and out of the Gulf of Mexico, an indoor pool and a jacuzzi tub for the last week while we have been on vacation. We have been away with other children-- all preschool aged so the possibility of having something contagious is just a likely as a Reaction to something. Yesterday my son woke up with puffy red cheeks after spending the day on the beach. It wasn't sunburn (he was wearing sunblock-- potential culprit-- and a hat.) He has also mentioned that he isn't feeling well-- but being 5 he will also take on any symptom you suggest-- sore throat, stomachache, etc. We are traveling home with him and he just showed us an itchy rash on his hand. It's on the back and is a big red patch with small raised white bumps. Any experience or ideas? We won't be home to call our doctor or try to get an appt. until Sunday night. Thank you! Thanks Kelly E-- Fifth's disease is what I am thinking-- the raised bumps on his hand are throwing me off though. more

Resolved Question: Where is the perfect Mexican vacation destination?

Help! I need to find the perfect destination in Mexico, but I am looking for something specific! I went to the Pacific side last year and I want to go to the Gulf side this time where I can see some ancient ruins. I want a place that is AUTHENTIC... not dangerous like Tijuana, but a place where it is more quiet and there are not a bunch of tourists (ie cancun, couzmel, etc). Any SERIOUS suggestions would be much appreciated. Again, a place that is: -On the gulf side of Mexico -Quiet (no tourists, no cancuns, couzmels, etc.) -Romantic -Preferably on the beach OR near the beach -A city with a NICE hotel I can stay at (I realize this will sacrifice a bit of its authenticy, but I think you get what I am saying.) -Authentic (some place that I am really going to need to use my Spanish and there's not an abudance of "Americanized" people. I'm looking to go to MEXICO, not a resort area, lol) more

Resolved Question: Where are the best honeymoon spots on the Florida Gulf Coast?

Voting Question: How do I get my wife to lose weight?

We've been together over 4 years now, and in the beginning she cared about how she looked and would try to eat healthy and she was just a little fireball of energy. Now she doesn't care about her appearance dresses frumpy, comes home from work and just eats and sleeps. She's put on probably 20 lbs in the past 2 years, and she's only 5'1" so its very noticeable. She's only 25, we don't have any kids and I'm just starting to think she's just a lazy person. Before people start calling me a jerk, I love my wife and I want her to be healthy especially since we're planning on starting a family in the next 2 years. I've tried everything from buying her a bike to go ride with me, asking her to go on walks, we have a gym in the clubhouse to our apartment that I go to every day and I always ask her to go. I'll ask her if she wants to go to the pool and swim and nothing. She just wants to sit on the couch. I need some advice from women on how to get her motivated, I've asked this question before and most of the answers I got were to bribe her with a vacation or clothes. We rented a beach house on the gulf of mexico for a week and she spent most of the time in the house or on the deck smoking, which I finally got her to quit about a month ago. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I'm honestly starting to worry about her and I have to get her out of this rut. more

This summer i did many things. My favorite thing was helping sea turtles hatch at LongBoat Key. Longboat Key is a beautiful beach on the gulf of mexico.
