Next summer I am travelling Europe with a friend for a month or so and we've opted to do it on our own, as opposed to a tour group. We're investing in rail passes, guidebooks, etc. -- but I'm just starting preliminary planning and research right now, and wanted to know what country to start in / which route would be best to begin? I will be in England, and she will be flying from Canada to meet me - so we're thinking of starting in either Scotland or Ireland --- we eventually want to see both. We want to work our way "across' Europe. Here are the countries we wish to visit: Ireland Scotland Spain France Germany Italy Greece Netherlands and possibly Sweden. Since I dont have a proper job for the past few months , it wouldn't be possible for any vacation this year. However, I am in part time job with 650 pounds per month.. I am planning to save 100 pounds per month from now on .. i am sure that i will be having 1200 pounds by next summer. i am planning for a vacation outside uk.. would any one know which would be the best place - norway or sweden.. i want to go for a cheap and best place.. i have found that hostels.com is listing me dorms for as low as 10 pounds per day.. so i am good with the accomodation.. what about food and travel in both these countries.. i assume the tickets would be under 400 pounds.. can any one share your experience on travelling to these countries ? more

Resolved Question: What to pack for our trip to Europe?

My son is 11 years old and is going to a soccer tournament in Finland Sweden this summer with his soccer team. I have an 18 yr old, 14 yr old, 11 year old(who will be playing soccer there),and 2 four year olds (still debating on bringing them, what do you think?) and will have a 4 month old baby (still debating on if she should go or not, what do you think?) The plan is, fly into England a few days before are supposed to be there, and have a mini family vacation in London. Then my two sons will go with my 11 year old sons coach to Finland to play soccer for a week, while we take our daughters across Germany, and a few other countries on the way, and eventually meet up with our 2 sons and his soccer team in Sweden(they are taking an over night cruise there) It will somehow work out...but i was wondering WHAT DO I PACK? and how? I know i can't pack all my luxrious stuff and pack 3 bags just for me...what do you think? Advice? I know this seems way complicated...lol. more

Europe: very few people of color in local or national government or in the media out of a continent that is 20% minority; separate but equal is still practiced. Discrimination is rampant. USA: minorities have been influential and powerful in the U.S. for decades and are very visible on TV and in pop culture. Americans recently elected a black president. Oprah has more money than the French university system. Arab-Americans are some of the most prosperous in the U.S.; Arabs in Europe are poverty-stricken for generations. Gay marriage and gay adoptions are illegal in most of Europe. There are only four countries which permit gay marriage. Scandinavia does not have gay marriage, but gay domestic partnerships, the same they currently have in California. But bans on gay marriage and gay adoptions have been upheld by European courts, including Sweden. Gay marriage is permitted in three states, and several allow civil unions, virtually the exact same benefits as marriage. Of the states that ban gay marriage, only two ban gay adoptions. Even Alabama permits gays to adopt, unlike France and Sweden. Muslim radicalism is pushing back gay rights in many parts of Europe, including the Netherlands where attacks against gays are far more common than in the U.S. Domestic violence in Europe is one of the highest in the industrialized world--3x higher than in the U.S. which actually has a higher reporting average than Europe---still the U.S. rate is lower. Overall crime is also higher in Europe today than the U.S. Crime in the U.S. has been steadily dropping for 15 years; it has risen steadily in Europe. Europe's street crime is 5x higher than street crime in the U.S. Europe's unemployment rate rarely goes under 10%. Americans freak out if their unemployment rate hits 6%. The elderly in Europe are abused and neglected. In the summer of 2004 a heat wave in Europe resulted in 45,000 deaths (25,000 in France alone) mostly of old people. Relatives left their bodies at government-run morgues, sometimes leaving them outside on the doorstep. The heat wave came in August and most didn't want to end their month-long vacations. The elderly in the U.S. move to Florida or Arizona and live like decadent royalty, sucking their grandchildren's futures dry off government-funded pyramid scams. Europe has no comprehension of free speech. It is still grappling with “hate speech codes” and its effect on liberty. Cartoons cause riots in Europe. Americans dealt with the issue of freedom of expression 200 years ago, most specifically with the “Cartoon Defense” in which the U.S. Supreme Court said that government cannot sue newspapers over cartoon parodies. They still riot over cartoons in Europe. The French president recently sued the manufacturer of a doll made in his likeness because he thought it was insulting. The court ruled partially in his favor. Ok, liberals, come to Europe's defense! Let's hear all you people who think Europe is the center of the universe come and rescue it from my horrible outburst! Come, liberals, don't take this sitting down. You must find a way to support Europe and debase the U.S. It's part of your religion! Now do it! more

hello from sweden.ok so I went to disney world for vacation this summer with a group of friends. me , my brother and his girlfriend were the only black ones and my boyfriend my best friend and her boyfriend are white. so anyways I kissed my BF and this woman could not stop staring at us, we got the same reaction from white people and black people , It was really weird. But anyways this african american woman asked us where we were from and I told her I we are from sweden, and she said that she didn't know that there were black people in sweden and that she thought it was a racist country!! I was really offended cause there isn't alot of racism in sweden and she also could not believe that I hung out with white people and that my boyfriend was white. And she also gave us dirty looks when we were holding hands. I was very upset ! I don't know many americans and I love visiting america but people need to lighten up and eccept the fact that blacks and whites around the world date each other. I really don't see the big deal! more

10 years ago I overstayed my visa by five months. I was suppose to go back in August but things happened that I had no control over, so I missed my flight. I didn't want to turn myself in like a petty criminal so I remained in the country until I had a new ticket back to my country. I then payed someone to take me to the airport but he never showed up so I missed the second flight as well. I then had to get a third ticket which took some time. Now ten years later I'd like to go to the United States for a short vacation and visit the White House, the Independence Hall, the Carpenters' Hall and other important and historical sites. I am currently residing in Sweden where I go to university and work. I also have a daughter here. Do you think it's possible for me to get a visa for the summer? I have no intentions of staying in the US and becoming an illegal alien. My future here looks bright so why would I want to become illegal and work 14 hours a day for a few bucks an hour? more

Resolved Question: Long distance relationship?

I just moved away to Sweden and my girlfriend stayed in Serbia. What is the best way to keep this relationship going. I am afraid the msn relationship is not going to be enough. We love each other, but I am afraid the distance might effect our relationship. I am not afraid that she will cheat on me. I told her that if she happens to find somebody else, that's ok... It means I have to move on. I am just afraid that we will cool off because of the distance. I will stay in Sweden for two years, and will go back to Serbia now in october for 7 days, than for one month during the winter vacation, and than for 3 months during the summer vacation, and most likely for a week or two in between the winter and summer vacation. I found a perfect girl. She is Just like me. We have so much in common that it is totally unbelievable. Hi, i am 7 weeks pregnant and had visited my midwife last week. Still i have not gone through any checkups or blood test. i want to travel to Norway from Sweden on summer vacation (15 Hrs journey by train) and then by bus, boat well as train on hilly and circular tracks. probably we need to stay in hostel as well and since i am veggie it will be hard to find some great food also. Resolved Question: Old flame dissaster:'(? HELP?

I went for my annual summer vacation home and met a very old flame. Story goes 11 years back, we went to the same high-school, same class. They had to sit us together because we were sending messages to eachother ALL DAY LONG ( no mobile phoens then:P). I loved him so much and he loved me the same too. It was more than a teenage crush, it was a forever kind. We were together for a month, then I broke his heart by going back to my long-term boyfriend. The thing is that I had low self-confidence and the long-term relationship I had was something I could control, but this other thing turned my world upside down and I was just blown away. I thought that if I would one day lose him, I would lose it completely. He tried to talk to me 2 years after that and I was cold and in denial. 7 years after that I moved to Sweden to finish my diploma there and one friend from our class told him that and he said that he thought he would never see me again. So he moved on. Now he has a 7-year-old......relationship. So we met and everything was like we were never apart. He felt awful but he couldn't help meeting with me every night, I ahve to say that we were both bad towards his girlfriend because we acted like a couple, we kissed and all. No sex though. It just felt SO natural to have my hand in his hands. The thing is, for me the situation is clear, I would love to be with him, but he lives many countries away because I am working on a PhD here. My feelings are finally clear after all of these years because I am single and doing soul searching. I cannot escape from what I am feeling for him anymore. But for him? It is different. I see that he wants me, but it's like I am too late, he was just so hurt by my actions and I think any guy would conclude I didn't ahve any feelings and move on. It has been such a long time, he had time to get over me and all, I am just beginning to get over him. What should I do?? Pursue him or let him go??He is NOT married!!!
