Top O Summer Vacations Questions asked

Resolved Question: Is Mother In Law being strange? Rude? Cheap?

Mother In Law has always sent thrift store purchases as gifts for xmas and birthdays to our 4 y-o. Usually sends about 3 or 4 very small things from the thrift store (used 5 inch beanie babies, a small book that costs $1.50- we know this b/c the price tag is left on, a small wooden top- these are examples of what she has sent in the past). Most of the time, the presents are unwrapped. On the rare occasion they are wrapped, it's usually in tissue paper with no tag indicating it's from grandma/grandpa. Last year she sent her nothing for xmas (but did send something for her birthday in January). This year one of her gifts was half of a simple train set- unwrapped. The first 1/2 consisted of track about a foot wide and two train cars. Told my hubby 2 weeks after it came that the other half of the train set would be sent for her birthday. Everyone is telling me she is cheap, rude and mean to send her 'half' a present. Thoughts? We ALWAYS tell her thank you and say how much we appreciate the gifts no matter what. They retired 10 years early and are well off- they vacation for 3 weeks across country every summer, sent a relative a $200 wedding gift this year (it was off of an online registry so we knew the price). In other words, they weren't financially forced to retire and are doing well- she even told my hubby a week ago that she received a substantial increase in her retirement pension just recently. She encourages my hubby to 'give generously' to his other relatives. Is it mean/strange/rude to send half a gift? Is it cheap to always send used thrift store gifts? What about the lack of wrapping gifts? She sent our daughter a digital camera along and told my hubby that it cost her only $8- don't know why she would tell my hubby how much she paid for things?Ok here's the deal- she does not like me. I have tried to reach out to her but stopped doing so after the following things happened: 1. pouted when she found out that my Mom was not able to pay for $400 of wedding pics that she ordered- told my hubby and me when she found out she had to pay for what she wanted that she didn't want ANY pictures from our wedding (she had taken pics w/ a disposable camera and those would be fine). Me, my hubby and I paid for the entire wedding- she did not offer to contribute at all but turned around and had a costly, separate reception for HER side of the family 2 months after the wedding. 2. When I was trying to get pregnant w/ our 1st child and had trouble conceiving, she sent a book to me entitled "Women who think too much' 3. I sent birthday/xmas cards and gifts that I put thought and effort into for three years and she said absolutely NOTHING to me- hubby had to ask if she got the gifts.3. My Mom paid for a hotel for them when they came to visit at the last minute b/c she could get a great price reduction (they could afford to pay but my Mom was trying to be hospitable)...they did not say anything to my Mom- no thank you or acknowledgement. 4. She would not speak to my husband for a few months when he sold some land HE had bought years ago that was near where they lived...he sold it to help pay for him to finish college. 5. My husband had been away on business for a month and the first weekend he could come home to visit was our 1st anniversary. They retired early and are well off financially. She decided to pick THAT weekend to visit us from across country. She did the same thing for our 5th anniversary. Chose the weekend of our anniversary to visit.6. She has never asked when my birthday is and never says anything about it. 7. She never asks anything about me or my family- I am not kidding. Nothing. The way she converses with me is telling me about her side/my husband's of the family and how they do things. 'WE do this this way, WE do this that way..." "OUR family does blah blah blah" "When John (hubby) was a little boy, OUR FAMILY did things this way...". When my 93 year old grandmother told them a little bit about where we were from when they were visiting, she made a comment that insinuated our ancestors isolated themselves and did not care about anyone but themselves. 8. When I was pregnant and they were visiting on our anniversary she did not ask ONE THING about the pregnancy or how I was feeling. Before they arrived they got lost and called for directions. I answered the phone and she got impatient w/ my directions and snapped at me. She did not even say hello when I answered but just said "We're lost".She then proceeded to hang up on me at the end (did not say goodbye or we'll see you in a few minutes...). more

Resolved Question: How do I stop hating my life?

This is long, but I hope detailed enough to provide a glimpse of the torment I am in. The story starts 10 years ago, almost to the day. I was married and living with my wife and son, who was 4 y.o. at the time. For reasons I did not understand (she later said it was post-partum..?), my wife became violent. The violence escalated quickly and changed from yelling and throwing things at the wall to throwing things at *me* and hitting me very aggresively (she is not a "pussycat"..). One time, she threw something very hard and heavy at me and missed, but instead it headed straight towards my son's head. Luckily, he ducked. She was already on anti-depressants at this stage and seeing a professional, but in her own words she "hated me and I just made her angry". I never hurt her or yelled and never to this day understood why she turned into this "Hyde" after our son was born. I tried for almost another year to be supportive and to just survive, but her aggression never stopped and I feared for both my life and my son's life. I could see that he was starting to sense the constant anger from her when I was around his mom and I didn't know what else to do. She said she hated me being there so I did the only thing I knew I could do: I left her. I was never an absent father, though. Even for the few months I was living in another country (Canada vs. USA), I flew him down to visit me for 10 days. Then when I realized I needed to be closer to him, I left behind a dream-job to move where he lived with his mom and took a typical crap-job just so I could get by, but be able to see him on weekends. I lived there for several years, working my way up a chain of command at the new job and eventually met someone who became my new wife. I always kept his needs at the top, though. I wanted so badly to show him a positive, loving relationship.. what two people are *supposed* to be like. My new wife and I had him over very regularly and saw him often. We took him on trips and nice vacations and he seemed to be very happy and well-adjusted to his lifestyle. I often talked to him about his life and that it wasn't "like all the other kids", but he even admitted that he wasn't the only child of a broken-marriage and that it was fun to have two homes. My wife and I always made sure that our home was his. He had his own bedroom at our house and his own clothes and personal belongings. When he needed something, he got it. When he wanted to do something, we did it. He was always the focus of our attention. A time came for us to branch out after being in the small Canadian town to someplace where we could start building a proper life for ourselves, always telling my son that he was included in the life we were trying to build. We found a place where we could purchase an affordable home in a good area where we could both get good positions in our field (small Canadian towns are not great for I.T. professionals..). After being in my son's home town and seeing him regularly for five years (we even took him to the town we were moving to several times so he could see the benefits), I left. He was 10 y.o. at the time. For the next two years, we visited him regularly (at least 2-3 times a year) and had him visit on summer and Christmas breaks. This was the best we could do, as where we settled was in the US and on the opposite coast (my wife's home town where we both had a support network). During our visits to him and his visits to us and for the great vacations we took him on, he seemed to be very happy with us. My wife and I always did everything we could to make sure he was a part of our life and was included in everything we did. We took him car shopping and house shopping and told him that he would always be welcome in our home and would always have a room. On his last trip to us, when he was 12 y.o., he told me that he wanted to move to us, permanently, to live and go to school. Since everything I'd done since I left his mom was to try and give him a good home, I was ecstatic! A year later, he came to the US with the intent of staying (it took time to make it happen with his mom and the school system so he went back to Canada for the current school year). While he was here with us, he had his own room and his own space (more than he ever had in his mom's house) and we did everything we could to provide for him and support him. I often talked to him, just he and I, and asked if he was happy and if there was anything else I could do to improve things. He always said that things were great and he was happy. We also went through the lengthy (and costly!!) process of getting him his permanent residence to the US. Then, while he was supposedly visiting his mom in Canada over the summer, she called up and said that he had decided to not come back - that he was staying with her. I tried to understand it, to understand what I did wrong or what I could have done better. He wouldn't even ta more

Resolved Question: Is there anybody out there who can help me with my Russian essay?

I have to write 170 words on the differences between the English and Russian education systems.I've found a very good website simply explaining Russian education, but I need some help translating it into Russian - i've always loathed online translators! I know theres a lot here, but even the odd sentence would be a great help! Classroom work often means reciting and being tested in a written form or orally by the teacher and sometimes evaluated by the teacher in front of the class. Criticism by the teacher in front of the class is frequent and accepted. Russian children go to school at the age between 6 and 7. They attend school for 10 years and then finish it at 16 (or17). If one does not perform properly during the acadenic year and one's grades are below satisfactory, he or she can be forced to study the failed year again ('to be left for the second year' as it is said here in Russia). They usually spend all the ten years in one buildingas all the three schools are in the same building. School years are divided into 3 sub-schools: primary, secondary and high. Primary is 4 years, secondary is 5 and high is 2. School starts on September 1 and remains in session till the end of May, with June being the month of exams. The school year is comprised of 4 terms with vacations in between: one week in November, two weeks in January, one week in the end of March and almost 3 months in summer (except for the time when students are busy with their exams). Some subjects are a must, some are optional. This is list of the normal classes tought at Russian schools: * Russian Literature * Russian Langauge * Mathematics * Algebra and Geometry (mostly studied in senior classes), * Physics * Chemistry * Russian History * World History * Geography * Biology * Foreign Languages (English, German, French, or Spanish), usually one at a time * Physical Educaion * Cooking, Arts and Crafts (for girls) * Manual Work (for boys) * Art of Drawing * Music * Astronomy Some scools may devote more attention to certain subjects. Then it is a Spanish, Literature or Math school, whatever the area of the major school interest is. The normal class size is 20-30 students. The students are together from the 1st till the last grade. The primary school pupils have one teacher for all the subjects tought (reading, writing, mathematics etc). As so children do not have to adjust to every new teacher of a differnt subject. The school day normally starts at 8 o'clock in morning and finishes at 1 or 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Students come to school 5 days a week, some study on Saturdays. The period lasts 40-45 minutes with a 5 or 15 minute break in between. Students have four classes a day in the primary school, five or six in the secondary, six or seven if it is the senior high school. Students are normally graded on the scale from 2 to 5 , with "5" being the top grade. Each student has his or her personal book of records of academic achievments, or the "diary" (the word, a lot of students and teachers would call it), where the teacher would record the grades for the student after a test or an oral report. more

Resolved Question: girl OR guy help!!!! PLZZZ! ahhh! >;-(?

Well, I have this half-crush on this guy. He's "popular" (but everyone thinks he's a perv) and I'm not...at all! I'm not a nerd but idk, people just think I'm weird. :P Now we obviously left for summer vacation...I know he doesn't like me. He likes this girl but she left the country! Idk who he'll like. if he'll like anyone. I doubt it'll be me because i forgot to tell u that i'm also thought of as ugly. So much that I'm made fun of...but like this: "Hey, Aida!" (over-excitedly for a guy i dont talk to) "Uh...hi" "I love you!" "I know you do...t-tell me something I don't know!" *he edges away* *I smile, covering up my embarrassment* Yeah...! oh and also, he's very subtly is mean to me!! And on facebook, i got my top 5 friends done...and he was the last one! He isn't even a good friend! We just talk occasionally in class..! :o What should I do? Resolved Question: Do you like this drabble (a story that has to have exactly 100 words) I wrote?

Schools out The clock ticks down. Only a few more seconds till it’s over. Then suddenly…The bell rings! “Schools out! Yippee! Hip-hip Hooray!” They go running through the halls, feeling on top of the world. It’s summer vacation and they can do anything they want…forever! “Hey Joe, I’m going fishing up at Wellington lake this weekend, want to come?” “Sure thing!” “Hey Marcy, a couple of us are getting together for a picnic this Friday, are you coming?” “Wouldn’t miss it!” They chatter on to each other with a hum of excitement in the air. O to be a teacher. You can also read another drabble I posted (in my questions). It has the same (or very close) title to it as this question does. : )P.S. You can't add a whole lot of discription in "exactly" 100 words (that's what a drabble has to have). : ) more

Resolved Question: Is this good for the beginning of a story that I started?

Be honest!! tell me anything that i can use for help!! =P ok...so here goes!! "Isabella, I love you and i always have! theres nothing i want more than to be with you!" I wondered here the voice was coming from. It sounded so familiar, but I couldn't remember. the voice was the same that i had heard for the past month in my dreams, but as usual, I couldn't place a finger on it! O! NOw i remember! the handsome voice was coming from Jackson Lable. I realized I had to say something...and fast. My mind wandered as i searched for the right words to use. "jackson is that you? o jackson! i feel the same way about you!" Right after i said that, i knew it was just a dream and it would end in 5...4...3....2... BEEEEEP!!!!!!! Ugh!! why does it have to be a dream everytime? i wanted to be able to hear those words for real! to be able to touch his face and kiss his lips. If only he felt the same way about me. I sighed as i remembered the last day of 9th grade. Jackson, of course, had a girlfriend. her name was sarah burnhart. she was beautiful, with shiny blonde curls, and tan skin. everyone worshippe her. everyone but me. now i will go back to the story about the last day of the year as me being a freshman. i was talking to jackson abouty the summer. and what he planned to do. "so jackson, what are you going to do this summer?" i had asked hoping for the response of him saying he would break up with sarah. he hesitated a bit to answer. "well, actually, i was planning on vacationing in rome with my family. everyone in my family is amazed by the Roman gods." the smile that i love had started on his face. thats wen sarah showed up as she a smile flash across jackson's face. "now jackie bear. you know i dont like mythology! so why are you talking about it with...that?" she emphasized the word "that." "i know you dont like them...but i do." it was sad watching him try to defend himself with no luck whatsoever. "yeah. i know. so are you coming to my house tonight for the end-of-the-school-year party or are you going to be hanging around with...that?" the emphasized the word again. jackson didn't answer. he just smiled apologetically and walked away with sarah. as soon as i realized school was in only 15 minutes, i went back to the real world. i walked over to my closet, and saw my favorite pair of jeans. they're so worn out its unbelievable. it would make me look like a hobo who couldnt afford her own clothes. i didnt want that now did i? no! deffinatly not. so i grabbed my mini skirt i never wore and a cute blue baby doll top. i brushed my teeth fast, hoping my breath wouldnt smell bad. i put my hair up in a high pony. it would have to do for now! "Izzy! we're leaving now!" my mom's voice was sounding frustraded even though it was the first time she told me to hurry up. i realized that she said "we're." she probably wasnt over my dads death yet. its just been four months. now its been just my mom and i for the whole time he was gone. thats all i have so far. i know there are some spelling mistakes but im hurrying so its ok! so tell me what you think of this story. what you like and what you dnt like. thanks!! =) TEAM EDWARD CUZ REAL MEN SPARKLEi was gonna have it be that jasper and her get together, but it turns out hes not the guy that she thought he was and hes like a jerk or whatever, and they break up. and BTW...i loved the name isabella before twilight...but its still awesome. and i am still going to have izzy. and i did no bout the tense. but it was going back to that time of 9th grade, and stuff like that. i knew there was difficulties with that and i will try to get help with that. thank you!!sorry! i mean jackson....oops!! hehe...i guess i have twilight on the mind!! more

Resolved Question: Is it possible that our creator ( in his infinite wisdom) has already given us a clean burning replacement?

As a struggling poor scientist, I already know the answer to that question. However, it looks like the rest of the public need to be reeducated right here and now. No, it's not a math, or English quiz that we shall conduct here. For this particular lesson is a lesson in simple one-on-one physics. If you boil water (H2O), it produces a lot of steam and a tiny amount of hydrogen gas too. However, if you electrify water it produces a mix of hydrogen and oxygen gas. Did you know that pure oxygen like its counterpart hydrogen is also highly explosive too, that's why you don't smoke a cigarette when breathing it after some surgery? I watched some News Channel report the other day, and the top story had to do with going back to those smaller Japanese imports. (The Reason) “That good old Fuel economy jazz" After hearing that, I thought to myself; “my God”, has all our God-given intelligence been somehow suppressed too? I mean; it's so simple and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out either. Everybody is now so concerned about the rising cost of fuel, be it; gasoline diesel or jet fuel. Yes, folks we have all become so concerned that were now enslaved by it. Yes so enslaved that many have temporarily postponed those family vacations in the wake of the rising fuel costs. There's even some foolish talk about lowering the speed limit on those expressways to 55 once again. The good Lord only knows how truly upset and outraged I have become as the summer season goes slowly by. I'm sure that you too (unless you're already filthy stinking rich) feel that rage growing inside. (H.2.O)+(ELE)+(TRON)=( CLEAN BURNING FUEL) Spells out (FUEL FREEDOM) for us all soon!!! Resolved Question: What difference would it make if Iraqi parliament’s take a vacation?

The Iraqi parliament’s decision to adjourn until September 4 gives an easy sound bite to American advocates of withdrawal from Iraq. “Why should our soldiers fight and die in 120-degree heat,” they will ask, “while Iraqi lawmakers go on vacation?” But the truth is that the parliament can, on its own, do little or nothing to resolve Iraq’s political impasse. Most of the business of governing happens outside of parliament, in negotiations among the major powerbrokers in prime minister Nouri al-Maliki’s coalition government. The parliament cut its scheduled summer recess short by a month, staying in session during July. But the government failed to reach compromise on important legislation, including laws to divide Iraq’s oil resources and allow some former Baathist officials to participate in the government, thereby increasing Sunni representation. As a result, the parliament had little to do for the past four weeks. This would not likely have changed in August, given that Maliki’s government still hasn’t reached agreement on its legislative priorities. Indeed, the largest Sunni bloc in Maliki’s coalition — the Iraq Accordance Front — has threatened to quit the government as early as this week. It argues that Maliki has not adequately met its demands to disband Shiite militias and allow greater Sunni political involvement. The dissolution or fragmentation of Maliki’s coalition would be a far heavier blow than a mere month-long recess by the Iraqi parliament. U.S. ambassador Ryan Crocker should spend the next few days reminding both Maliki and the Sunnis that such a break would be perceived by much of the American political class as further justification for U.S. troop withdrawal. Crocker should also continue to work with all parties on the passage of at least a few important compromise laws (an oil-sharing agreement being the top priority). These proposed Iraqi laws have taken on an outsized significance in the American political debate, and may be more important to us right now than to the Iraqis. The lack of movement on these so-called benchmarks shouldn’t obscure important recent political progress on the ground, as Sunni tribes have begun to ally themselves with us against al Qaeda. That our debate hasn’t yet taken full account of this change is just one of the ways in which, as liberal hawks Michael O’Hanlon and Kenneth Pollack argued in an eye-opening New York Times op-ed, it has become detached from new realities in Iraq. Ultimately, reconciliation between the Sunnis and the Shiites is crucial. But it wasn’t going to happen in the next two months, whether the Iraqi parliament stayed in session or not. General Petraeus’s September report has come to be seen as a final test for Iraq, which makes sense only for Democrats hell-bent on leaving no matter what, and for nervous Republicans seeking a soft exit. We are beginning to see the fruits of a sound counterinsurgency strategy and, in this context, a debate focused on how to get out rather than how to consolidate our gains is shameful, however easy the sound bites are. more
