Denton County Texas Questions asked

Voting Question: whats rights does a non-biological father have?

I was married to my ex wife for 6 years we were going through a divorce, at which time I was paying child support. I was ordered back to court because my ex suddenly realized that I might not be the father of our 4 year old daughter. I took a paternity test at her lawyers office. Which I now realize was a huge mistake. I signed some paper work and left. I get paper work at the courthouse the day of our final divorce proceedings stating I am not the biological father of my daughter. We go before the judge and she says that since I am not the biological father of my daughter, and the biological mother does not want me to be a part of my daughters life I have no rights to her any longer. I couldn't afford to hire an attorney because my ex wife had me fired from my job because she lied to my boss. Knowing I could not afford an attorney, and her father and mother have money to pay for her legal fees, and the lawyer, and judge were friends In Denton County family court I was railroaded out of my daughters life. My daughter was 4 years old I am now remarried and financially able to fight for my daughter. However, I need to know what rights I have in the state of Texas? I live in Tarrant County Texas. more

Resolved Question: Will I be going to prison for 10 to 20, or could i do house arrest?

When i was 17 (now 20), I was charged with Burglary of a habitation (2nd degree felony in Texas). Worst decision I've ever made, i hate thieves and liars, but i was young and very dumb. i was charged as an adult and was given 2 years pre-trial diversion. it was revoked because i got an MIC. the judge offered 5 years in prison but my lawyer worked something out and i then was sentenced to 45 days in Denton County Jail and 8 years differed probation. Ive been on differed for 10 months now and just got a DUI. I told my PO at our appointment which was a day after i got the MIC. i kept in touch for a few weeks and she said it was not on the police report. now, i'm not sure if she's just saying this to have me arrested when i go to my appointment tomorrow or what. i checked the citation and it's on the county website so i'm guessing she's lying because if i can find it, surely she can, right? i'm not a criminal anymore, i've been in college for 2 years just trying to get on with my life, yes i drink but i wasn't even legally drunk, i'm just a minor. what could i do to not go to prison and have this on my record? am i eligible for house arrest? if i was on house arrest i could still take online classes and even work from home and contribute to society instead of wasting tax payers money sitting in prison. i am also current with my fees and classes. Thank you for your help.i know its a little late but i have stopped drinking. i don't even want to look at a beer. college sucks without drinking though. but now if i get another chance i would never party, just school, work, homeim prepared to do time. ill do most of my time in county and MAYBE six months in prison. ive already served a year probation so i would be out on parole in 1 year from now. andy im a pretty big dude so i wont be anyones bride. more

Resolved Question: Can I join the Army with my record?

In 2004 I was convicted of Robbery, and 2 UUMV's aka "Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle" In Denton County Texas.I had JUST turned 18. I served 5 years in prison. I am now 23 about to turn 24 in july. Its been almost 10 months since my release and I cant find a decent job anywhere, and therefore cannot pay for any respectable school to teach me a useful trade. Im taking a serious look at the army and what it has to offer me for my future, and Im willing to give back by being the best that I can be. My question is: With Current regulations how hard will it be for me to join the army? Id really appreciate an answer from someone who is IN the army and KNOWS the CURRENT REGULATIONS and not merely googleing someone Else's case that was back in 2006 or whatever. Since im serious about this I wont accept anything less than MY answer. more

Voting Question: return of Laptop to former employer?

Hello, I live in Dallas Texas. in 2008 I was working for an Ohio based company, but based out of my home. I was only with the company for about 4- months including 2 months of training. I recieved a phone call on a Saturday morning whith my Supervisor and HR Manager informing me that I was bbeing terminated because I had not proven to them that I could handle the position. At that point they told me to send back my laptop cell phone and printer. Ok it was not for insub or any other reason. Well, I ended up getting unemployment since I was not fired for a bad reason. However, I did have to move from my apartment due to the job loss, I was on unemployment for a year and unfortunately got really sick and had to move home to Houston to live with my parents and undergo tests etc. I ran a background check on myself this week because I have an interview with an airline here in Houston and found out that I hace a criminal charge against me for $500 but less tahn $1500 - A misdemeanor in Texas. I did contact the company and have returned the Laptop and actuall bought a new printer still in box, worth more than the one issued to me. I believe that with all the moving I was hard to locate, but I always forwarded my mail, but neverrecieved anything from the Dallas Police or the company in writing on phone call. I called the Denton, TX county DA, he informed me that i had warrants and i would ened a lawyer before he would talk or negotiate. The laptop was issued to me how can the charge be theft> isend the equipment back? thanks for your help...I am getting a lawyer more

Resolved Question: How will the pro-illegal alien crowd on Yahoo! Answers defend these 300 illegal aliens with criminal records?

U.S. announces Texas roundup of 300 immigrants with criminal records By DIANNE SOLIS / The Dallas Morning News Nearly 300 illegal immigrants with criminal convictions were arrested this week in Texas, federal immigration officials and prosecutors said today. The largest number of arrests, 119, were in North Texas. Of the total, about half of the immigrants had convictions for violent crimes or drug offenses. Most of the crimes were committed in the Untied States, authorities said. "These are not people we want walking on our streets," said John Morton, the assistant secretary for the Department of Homeland Security who oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The arrests, though, raises questions about why the immigrants hadn’t been deported earlier, immediately after they'd served their time for criminal convictions. Morton said scrutiny of inmates in federal and state prisons is good, and immigrants are generally removed from the country after serving their prison sentences. But there are large gaps in municipal and county jails. A new program, called Secure Communities, seeks to link jail staff with federal data banks to ensure that those with criminal convictions are removed from the country. There are only 110 jail locations in the country that now use the program. By the end of 2013, ICE would like coverage across the nation, Morton said. Secure Communities has come under scrutiny for the relatively low number of persons caught who have been convicted of violent crimes – or what’s known in ICE as a "level one" offense. Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Irving, Mesquite and Dallas and Denton counties are among the jurisdictions using Secure Communities processes. The program began in November 2008. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/022510dnmeticeraids.1572cfa1e.html more

Resolved Question: First Child Support Hearing in Texas-any insight?

I have a child support hearing next week and I'm just wondering what to expect. I had to file with the attorney general b/c my 9 month old daughter's father is refusing to help me support our daughter. The Attorney General set up a negotiation review but he didnt show, so they served him with papers and now we have to go to court. This will be in Denton County. If anyone has any insight or tips I would be appreciative! I'm just not sure what to expect. I have all the papers I think I need-medical bills/expenses, printouts from daycare, etc. But I dont have a lawyer, because I dont think I'll really need one. I'm not trying to get more than whats deserved. I work a full time job and the majority of my paychecks go to supporting my daughter. I'm just trying to get him to help support her so she is able to get everything she needs/deserves. He has no interest in seeing her or hearing about whats going on with her, and I've more than tried to get him involved. I'm at my last possible option. Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Why did I not have to pay anything for my speeding ticket?

Hey everybody, just a quick question burning in my mind from today. I was speeding, 83 in a 60, and completed a defensive driving course to dismiss my citation. So I went to the municipal court today and gave them my proof of defensive driving and my driver record and all, and then the clerk just said I was done, that was it. Then I asked her if I had anything to pay for the fine of speeding itself, like I did for my first ticket. I paid for that one after defensive driving, so I assumed that with the exact same situation now, I would just have to pay again. She said no. So, needless to say, I didn't ask any questions, just said thanks, and left with a big smile. The only variables I can see here are that 1.) the two violations were in different counties, Denton county, and then the city of Irving, in Dallas County (both Texas), and 2.) I was speeding by a smaller margin for my first ticket, which wouldn't mean much. That's about it. Any insight on this would be great! But please, no guesses, only 100% answers. My guess is as good as anybody's. =/ Thanks in advance for your answers! more

Resolved Question: Cost of braces (for teeth) in North Texas?

We went to the orthodontist yesterday in Sherman to start the process for my daughter's braces, and they told us the price is going to be over SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS!!! Is that the going price these days? It is a lot more than I expected, but I just don't know! Someone I was talking to today said that was WAY too much and he recommended a place called Cool Smiles. Do you know anything about it? He seemed to think we could get braces there for under $1000. Obviously that's a better price, but the difference makes me wonder about how good/effective it could be. I really like this orthodontist. We've been going to her for several years for her to check on Maggie's teeth and let us know when she's ready for braces. I trust her, and I think she will do a good job, it's just the cost! We could go anywhere in west Grayson, east Cooke, west Collin, or east Denton counties, and possibly Dallas County. If you'd rather not post something on this topic for all the world to see, please send me an email through Y!A. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Texans: Can I go to a county that does not require an emissions test to register my car?

My car has an evap leak that I cannot afford to fix right now... I did some testing on it, and it's going to cost far more than I can afford and I NEED to go to work so I can get the $$$ to fix it! I just read on a website that only certain counties are participating in the emissions testing. Now.. Here's another twist... Our tags are from out of state because we just moved here AND expired. Can we go to a different county to get our car inspected and registered? We do live in Midlothian Texas which is part of Ellis county that requires the major emissions tests though, but since we have a Texas address, could we go to any county to get it inspected and registered? I've got to figure this out quick! Help!!! Thanks :-) Here's some info from TX's site on the participating counties. Texas has both a safety inspection program and an emissions (I/M) program. Counties participating in the emissions (I/M) program include: Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Montgomery, Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, El Paso, Travis, and Williamson counties. From this, it doesn't look like all counties participate in the emissions program. Any ideas? Thanks! more

Voting Question: Should I contest my speeding ticket or get deferred adjudication?

I was recently pulled over outside of a college campus for allegedly going 34mph in a 20mph (not a designated school zone or construction site) at about 11:30 at night. The policeman followed me for half a mile before pulling me over and gave me a speeding violation at a point half a mile back. Looking at the ticket and locations, there are a few things that I think may give me somewhat of a case. 1. He said I had "slowed down at the tennis courts[to the speed limit]" on this street, which is the 500 block of the street. On the ticket he put I was speeding on the next block (the 600 block), when he said I was going the speed limit then. The stories don't line up. Not a huge deal, but still incongruous. 2. I came from a stop sign on a street perpendicular to the one I was given the violation for and came right out onto the 500 block. (I turned onto the 500 block). It was a 3 way stop (one for my way and two for the violation street) and he followed me this way. He didn't put on the citation that he clocked me with a radar (which is why he followed me, to pace me, which is fine). But, for him to catch up with me after having waited through a cycle of stops at the stop sign, speed up, then slow down to my speed all in the course of about half a block so he could get an "accurate" reading and still have time to watch me slow down to the speed limit in the SAME BLOCK is very hard to believe that he got an accurate reading of my speed, especially since it wasn't on radar. 3. I have two witnesses that were with me in the car at the time who both testify that I wasn't going over 20mph. (For him to catch up with me and accurately pace me, I would have had to be going pretty slow). Those are the things I think I have going for me. The ticket is a $210 if found guilty, but deferred adjudication is $260 and will take it off of my record. By fighting the ticket, I risk the judge saying I'm guilty and the ticket going on my record and my insurance going up. I'm pretty sure I wasn't speeding and, plus, I have two witnesses that say I wasn't...so I'm not sure. Should I contest it in court, or go with the deferred adjudication? Driver's Safety Course isn't an option in this case. My state is Texas and my county is Denton if that helps. Please let me know if I have a good enough case or if I should drop it. I'm just tired of stories like this where the person did nothing wrong and still gets a ticket. Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty" and not "guilty until proven innocent"? Thanks W P.S. I was pulled over on the second to last day of the month and think the officer's ticket quota for that month might have had something to do with it....I don't know though. Thanks again. God bless. more

Resolved Question: What is the legal process of taking ownership of an abandoned vehicle?

I live in Texas (more specifically the city of Frisco, in Denton county, the vehicle in question resides here as well) and I have come across a classic MG MGB Roadster that has been abandoned on a foreclosed property that we were considering purchasing, the real estate agent has confirmed that it is abandoned and that he and the deed holder of the property have no problem with us towing it away for a restoration. My question is, what do I have to do to actually take ownership of, and title the vehicle? more

Resolved Question: Grants for going (back) to college? (Denton county in TX)?

I live in Denton County in Texas, and would like to do something with my life and go back to school. It's been a while, so I'm not sure how the whole process works. I've been told about a PELL grant that pays for a lot of it, but I have also heard they don't pay unless you go full-time. Is this true? I can't afford it on my own, and not sure if I will have the time to do full-time, seeing that I work full-time and am in the process of buying a house. I was also wondering if these grants support online learning, too? (I am planning on just doing my local community college online) I have also heard some bigger universities as well as some jobs don't accept credits/degrees completed online? Is this true? As you can see, I'm at a loss! Any help would be greatly appreciated. : ) more

Resolved Question: How do I find out if I have a warrant for my arrest in Texas?

When I was in college, gas was sometimes less than a dollar a gallon and my last class was always before 2 on Thursday so I developed a healthy habit of road tripping across the state visiting friends at other schools and various landmarks. I also developed a long list of speeding tickets that I did not always have the money to pay. Is there a way to find out if I have any outstanding warrants from this time frame so I can take care of them so I don't have to be terrified of having my boss in the car getting pulled over and being cuffed. I honestly have no idea what counties to even start looking in I have been from Denton to Austin, Lubbock, Houston, Corpus, Tyler, Big Bend and every place in between so I need a statewide search. Is there a Statute of Limitations of bench warrants in Texas and what would it be? more

Resolved Question: Probation violation in other state trouble?

When I was 18, I had a fake ID and I got caught while on vacation in texas for having a Fake ID. It was a 3rd degree felony charge, and I got 7 years probation. That was 3 years ago. I caught a receiving stolen property charge in ohio and served 6 months in prison. Upon my release, I contacted my PO the first day I got out and he said he had no intrest in my case, and felt the 6 months I served was sufficent enough to drop my case. He said he checked, and there was no warrants out of texas. To be safe, I called denton county probation, and told them my situation to make sure nothing came up. Well now they looked into it, and the probation department down there said he filed a violation report and there may be a warrant out for my arrest next week. Since my release, I got my old job back, and im employeed full time about 50 hours a week. I got an apartment and I financed a car because my PO told me I was free and clear. What should I do?The worst part is that none of this would have happened had I not called texas and told them about my situation. I learned my lesson from prison and Im really trying to stay out of there. What can happen and what should I do? more
