Houston Texas Questions asked

Open Question: Do you agree with Mexico who claims the drug cartel are not a threat to the US at all & never have been?

WASHINGTON — Texas elected officials are “disingenuous or naive” to believe that Mexican drug violence is spilling across the border into the United States, Mexican Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan said Friday. In a wide-ranging interview at the Mexican Embassy in Washington, Saruhkan attributed the recent escalation of violence in Ciudad Juarez to desperate attempts by narcotics kingpins to protect their shrinking turf, praised the Obama administration's attempts to clamp down on the smuggling of U.S. weapons to the Mexican cartels and denounced the murders of reporters who cover the Mexican government's bloody war against the nation's powerful drug cartels. The Mexican envoy also disagreed with American politicians who call illegal immigration from Mexico a national security risk akin to “potential terrorists or transnational organized crime.” Undocumented workers are “a challenge to the rule of law,” he said, “but immigrants are not a threat to the national security of the United States.” Sarukhan took exception to a letter written by Texas Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn to President Barack Obama this week declaring that “spillover violence in Texas is real and it is escalating.” In Austin, Texas Gov. Rick Perry also activated a “spillover violence contingency plan.” ‘False dilemma' And U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a letter to Perry Friday that her agency is considering expansion of drone aircraft operations into West Texas. “The term ‘spillover' would, at least in my eyes, seem to be a bit of a false dilemma,” Sarukhan responded. “You speak of ‘spillover' as if you had the pristine waters of Alaska contaminated by the spill of the Exxon Valdez. That is, there was nothing there before the Exxon Valdez created the accident. “To assume that in Texas there are no distribution networks, drug traffickers don't have safe houses, they don't have banks, they don't launder money, is disingenuous or naive at the least,” he told reporters and editors from the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News. “So ‘spillover'? They're already there.” Sarukhan said that future violence in Texas was theoretically possible “if the drug trafficking syndicates decide to use San Antonio as their hub and local law enforcement step up their efforts to shut them down.” “But that is not happening,” he added. The ambassador said drug cartels had resorted to terror tactics in response to President Felipe Calderón's sustained crackdown, the first of its kind in Mexican history. “You've got a president in Mexico who's finally decided to take them on,” said Sarukhan. “It's as simple as that ... To an action, there is always a reaction.” On violence against journalists in Mexico, Sarukhan said the Calderón administration was deeply concerned, despite complaints from media watchdog groups that it has remained silent. There have been 44 documented deaths of Mexican journalists since 1992, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. “The fact that the press that is covering drug trafficking is being targeted by drug traffickers to intimidate and silence is a huge, huge, challenge to fundamental liberties and a free press in a country like mine,” Sarukhan said http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/6922047.html more

Open Question: What are some ways I can get community service hours?

I am a sophomore in High School and I hope to someday go to SMU or TCU. I am in drill team, I am involved in a ballet company and modern class and I teach a Jazz dance class. I go to church and occasionally help out. I fell like I have enough Extra Curricular for my applications but I am really lacking on the community service. I just applied for English Honors Society and they do some community service and I applied to work at a camp for special needs children so I think that will help, but what is an organization that I can get permanently involved with? I live in The Woodlands, Texas. I can drive to Houston during the summers. How can I get involved? I have tried volunteer match and all that stuff and I can't seem to find anything. Open Question: Will mixing baby oil with spf and another tanning oil help?

Ok,I am VERY fair skinned (I am Caucasian) ...like sour cream..well...maybe not sour cream, but I am REALLY white. I really want to get a nice healthy looking tan. I also want to protect my skin. I am not able to wear shorts or skirts because of the way my legs look...white/blueish/red just generally bad...and every little scar shows up a million time more visible than it did from when I was little and tanner(I am 16 now)...I plan on going out and laying in my back yard either earlier in the morning or later in the after noon when the rays aren't as harmful. I have also tried EVERY self tanner out there from high end to drug store and EVERYTHING turned me a gross orange color. so please dont suggest a self tanner If I us: SPF-50+ with Baby oil SPF-50+ with Hawaiian Tropic dark tanning oil SPF-50+ with Maui Babe Browning lotion SPF-50+ with Banana Boat dark tanning oil any other good combos? will these help me get a good healthy tan? how long will it take? I also plan on laying out for 30mins. to an hour on each side(back and stomach). I live in Houston Texas if that makes a difference. My dad and mom can tan REALLY well. I just never get out in the sun anymore (I will this summer though). they both used to be really tan. Also please don't give me any lectures about the dangers of tanning....I know it is dangerous and I did my research so please any comments like that can be kept to yourself. Open Question: Do you have to have a license to breed?

I'm asking this because my friend just recently purchased a boxer pup from a lady. My friend took the pup to her first vet treatment and the puppy was in pretty bad shape. The puppy has a heart murmur, a bladder infection, she is anemic, and malnutrioned. The vet told my friend that this was negligence on the lady that sold the puppy to her. My friend called the lady to inform her of this, and the lady was a total bitch. She said That I don't do refunds, and that you could always resell her. Me and my friend were totally appalled at this. We are both animal lovers and find this treatment totally unacceptable. She is obviously only in it for the money and doesn't give a damn about the puppies, and the mother isn't even a year old. Can my friend turn her in to the humane society? She lives in Houston Texas. From what I understand her husband bought the dog for their daughter. It was an ad in the newspaper. I do agree that they should of researched. I personally would never by from a breeder. I always adopt. She is not intrested in a refund. she is going to do everything she can for her pup. It just sickens us that people can get away with this crap. more

Open Question: What Should i do and where should i go for college???? Music Carrier or Astronomy Carrier?

Im 15 years old and i live like 60 miles from Houston Texas. i don't know what ti do for or especially where to go for college. I am pretty smart in school but im not a nerd (Im like the rocker type kid with long hair, skinny clothing, band tees, and so fowarth). i usually find myself making As and Bs but since this year,(im in the 8th grade, and i was held back a grade because i used be homeschooled), ive been struggling a bit and i am making a few Cs and have made 1 F. I find that science is the easiest subject to understand and all of science easy to memorize. (id forget to study for a big test or do the test reviews and i still get high Bs and Low As). I am good at my other subjects but i find that im good in math but i am not the type who can stay focused doing a million math problems. i find maht and history very dull and reading and language arts is just boring like the others. Also, i love Rock and Metal music (Unlike these retarded snoby rednecks). I play the guitar and have been playing guitar self tought for 1 year and really dedicated. I am trying to learn music theory and all the things i need to be able to write songs, improvise, read sheet music and all that stuff. Id really like to do a music carrier but id make more money in the science carrier like astronomy or something like that. I don't know what to do because id want to do the music carrier but i know that my dad would not (in a not angry but convincing type way) approve that idea and a astronomy carrier would make more money (unless i become a famous rockstar or something). If i choose the Music carrier, where should i go to college???? Im thinking maybe Austin Texas since it's one of the biggest music citys in the world and maybe id have a bigger chance of getting a good job in Austin. But for the astronomy carrier, i did not think of this until now but maybe Universty of Houston since it's close to Johnson space station and that my dad might mostly recomend UH since he went there for college. My heart sets closer to the music carrier but that might be hard to get into and i don't know how i would get in since my dad would not be too enthused at the idea and that i've only started learning guitar and music last year. Also, for the music carrier, what kind of jobs can i get? i want to be able to play my guitar and make songs and stuff. And what kind of jobs can i get in the Astronomy carrier??? Please give me a good and detailed answer. more

Open Question: No Criminal Penalties for Deadbeat Dads?

Apparently there were no criminal penalties for deadbeat dads in the late 1990's and I'm wondering if it’s still the same way now. Case in point: Haku Israni, a wealthy Houston businessman, was able to walk away with no criminal penalty after refusing for years to pay child support for his infant daughter Angela. He was sued by the Texas attorney general for his failure to pay, but then for a full 8 months he didn't show up for any of his scheduled court appearances! Sheriffs and process servers were staking out his house and trying to serve him with legal papers, but Israni was a slippery fish and did a great job of hiding (finding these rich dads who don’t work 9 to 5 jobs can be tough!). So ultimately the judge permitted the sheriffs to serve Israni by leaving it at his home address. Who pays for all this--the state lawyers' time, the judge's time, the clerks’ time, the sheriffs’ time, and the costs of all the paperwork? That would be us, the taxpayers!! Why should we have to pay more in taxes just because some loser dads bail on their responsibilities? In Israni's case, he refused to pay child support for his 2 year old daughter because he didn't want his family and professional colleagues to find out about his adultery. You can view the lawsuit and Israni’s testimony here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/28335427/State-of-Texas-Sues-Haku-Israni-for-Refusing-to-Pay-Child-Support If you're going to break the law by not paying child support and then waste boatloads of taxpayer resources by blowing off the government employees who are trying to hold you accountable, shouldn't you be forced to pay back the state for all the costs and also punished criminally? What is the current law on this?I previously posted this in the Family category, but I thought the users here might be better equipped to answer the specific question I have. more

Open Question: Why are 12,000 Illegal aliens in Texas Getting A Free College Education?

More than 12,000 illegal immigrants, non-permanent residents or non-U.S. citizens paid in-state tuition or non-U.S. citizens paid-in-state tuition or received after financial aid at public universities and colleges across Texas during late 2009.According to the Houston Chronicle, "the figures from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board show about 1 percent of all Texas college students, in the fall semester, benefitted from a 2001 law granting such in-state tuition." The law claims students who are not U.S. citizens and intend to seek the assistance must have intended school in the state for at least three years before they graduate from a Texas high school. Students must also file an affidavit claiming they want to seek permanent residency. 12,138 students benefitted from the law during the fall semester. As disclosed by the newspaper, Texas awarded aprroximately $33.6 million in-state and institutional financial aid to those students between fall 2004 and summer 2008. Gov. Rick Perry, who won the GOP primary earlier this month, supports the law abiding illegaql immigrant students. The governor, in a recent debate, contended the students are on the path to citizenship. In December, the Immigration-Reform Coalition of Texas Coalition of Texas filed a challenge to the law. Coalition attorney David Rogers, who maintains that taxpayers suffer because of the law, said, "it's not like we're swimming in budget surpluses. It's the responsibility of the government of Mexico to educate Mexican citizens." To read the entire article from the Houston Chronicle.....http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6913695.html This is insane. We can't support our own citizens, and entitlements threaten to wreck our credit ratings around the world and throw us into bankruptcy! Mexicans need to stay in their own country and clean it up instead of bringing their problems to the United States and making U.S. taxpayers pay for them. Why do Mexicans feel they have some special entitlement to break our laws and enter the U.S. illegally when there are people from Europe and Asia who have waited in line for years to become citizens? I'm all for Latinos migrating to the United States, as long as they get to the back of the line and meet ALL of the qualifications. Our country is in a huge financial crisis, and we can no longer afford to provide social services to non-citizens. In fact, our virtually unlimited entitlements contributed to this crisis, along with liberals who insisted we lend money to people who couldn't repay it, and give mortgages to those who couldn't afford them.
