Surfing In Texas Questions asked

Voting Question: tell me what you think?

this is a speech i had to wright for school could you guys read it and tell me what you think of it thanks. ohh and if you can think of a better title could you tell me Two dollars a gallon and counting In 1969, a massive oil spill from an offshore drilling platform off the coast of Santa Barbara leaked approximately 70,000 barrels of oil into the Pacific Ocean. The leaked oil spread nearly 650 miles along the coast of California over a period of three months. It is estimated that 8000 birds and 15000 fish were killed in the disaster. After this incident, the citizens of Santa Barbara started a coalition to ban offshore drilling. They received nearly 20000 signatures on their petition and were granted their wish, ensuring that Santa Barbara’s coast was protected from drilling. These people have stood up for their coast’s environment; now why can’t the rest of the US? The oil industry argues that offshore oil drilling will make many jobs, that the US coasts have a lot of oil, and that offshore oil platforms do not affect tourism. This is completely untrue though which is why the United States needs to ban all off shore oil-drilling of the east and west coasts of the US; They need to do this because offshore oil drilling will not make many jobs, the US does not have much oil along the coasts, and offshore oil platforms will destroy tourism. One of the problems with offshore oil drilling is that the new platforms will not make many jobs. Although the oil industry says that nearly 1 million jobs would be created, this is incorrect. As stated by MSNBC.com writer Mark Murray “only 22-25 people work on each oil rig at a time”. The oil industry would argue that this statistic is false this is also completely untrue though as the figure simply states how many people work on the platform at a time. Also by this estimate only one hundred thousand jobs will be made for the proposed 4000 new oil platforms, which is nowhere close to the oil industry’s proposed number of jobs. Another thing the oil industry does not want people to realize is that because of massive offshore oil-drilling platforms jobs will actually be lost. People that rely on the ocean such as fishermen, dive teams, and marine merchantmen would lose jobs. Virginia would be hurt heavily by offshore oil because of this. Because the ocean is Virginia’s main source of revenue we would lose money that could have been spent on Virginias Public Works. Tourism would also be affected by offshore oil drilling. Tourism is another large form of income for Virginia Beach. Surfing is a major reason for the massive tourist presence in Virginia Beach. If an oil spill were to occur from one of the proposed oil drilling platforms off the East Coast the beaches would be closed down until the oil was cleaned up, which has in some very severe cases taken up to three months to do. In 1982 a massive oil spill closed down San Padre Island off the coast of Texas for an entire summer. In a 2009 Politifact.com article written by Aaron Sharockman, ‘offshore oil drilling has cost the tourism industry before’ states “Texas beaches in the South Padre Island area lost tourism revenues between 4 million and 4 1/2 million [dollars]”. Another way offshore oil drilling would affect tourism is by forcing local businesses to lower prices. The reason for these price changes would be; that since these massive eyesores would disrupt the views from U.S. beaches the only reason tourists would tolerate them would be by much cheaper prices. This could then result in local businesses going out of business. This would then affect the amount of tourism, which in turn would start this cycle over again. Another debate about offshore oil drilling is how much oil is located along the east and west coasts. As stated by The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace writer Whitney Leonard’s in ‘Five alternatives that make more sense than offshore oil’. The oil industry says that approx. 10% of the worlds oil supply is located on the east and west coasts. This is also an untruth which has been stated by the oil industry, as “only about 1.4 percent of the worlds supply of oil” comes from offshore oil drilling off the coast of the United States. 1.4 percent of the worlds oil supply is approx. 18 billion barrels of oil. This may sound like a lot but the US would use that amount of oil in only about a little over two years. The reason we would use this much oil is because the US consumes nearly 25% of the world’s oil supply, while the US only produces 10% of it. This will very soon become a major issue unless better fuel alternatives are found. Because of the small amount of oil located in the world waste is not an option, so when massive oil spills occur it is not only a disaster for the environment it also causes a massive devastation to the economy. In these tough economic times waste is not an option. The amount of oil on the Coasts has been estimated numerous times more

Resolved Question: Where is my location stored on my PC?

For example, if I go to popeyes.com and search for locations near my home, the web site automatically shows me locations near Missouri City. I didn't input this information. Other sites show me singles that live in the Missouri City area. Where are these sites getting "Missouri City" from? I've looked in the registry and can't find anything. more

Resolved Question: In light of Umaga's passing, isn't this freakishly ironic?

Mr. Kennedy wrestled both Eddie Guerrero and Umaga in their final matches. They were both called Eddie and each of them came from big, well-respected wrestling families. I'm not going to hop onto the bandwagon. I wasn't the biggest fan of Umaga. However, I will admit this. He was a fantastic wrestler for a guy of his size. A very agile athlete. He had some great matches with guys like Jeff Hardy and John Cena. Heck, I even enjoyed his match with CM Punk at this year's Judgment Day. He was a fantastic performer and I'm baffled at why ROH or TNA (for the second time) didn't secure his services quicker. * * * * * * * Here's my account of what happened in the hours leading up to Eddie Fatu's death: I logged onto the Internet and immediately, as I always do, checked LordsofPain. When I saw the headline "Umaga Hospitalized & In Very Serious Condition", I didn't think much of it. I thought it maybe had something to do with weight issues or something like that and I just carried on surfing the 'net. After about twenty minutes, I went back and checked again. "Umaga Update: Wrestlers React To His Hospitalization & Health Condition". Mr. Kennedy tweeted; "Say a prayer for my boy Umaga". Bobby Lashley was already implying that Umaga had passed and D'Angelo Dinero (Elijah Burke) tweeted too, saying that he wouldn't speak until the family released a statement. I was starting to get worried. I was just confused. I logged onto the YWWA Chat and spoke to a couple of people about it. Some hadn't heard, some had heard and some were just disrespectful and didn't even acknowledge me. That pissed me off. I logged out and checked for another update on the situation. Still nothing. Because I live in a diffrendifferentone to Texas, unfortuunfortunately to go to sleep. Before I went to bed, I said a prayer for Umaga. I prayed to God that he'd pull through and just pleaded that God would keep him alive. Umaga was brain-dead for sure. But being brain-dead, was better than being dead and buried. I prayed for about ten minutes and then reluctantly went to sleep. I woke up very early. Around 8AM. I found my Dad awake. I rushed upstairs and found the Internet already connected. I quickly opened up Firefox but before I opened up LordsofPain, I hesitated for a second. I felt a shiver go down my spine and then took a deep breath and clicked on it. I shook. Edward 'Umaga' Fatu Passes Away At 36, it read. I felt my cheeks burning up, my legs go cold and a lump forming in my throat. I researched a little bit and came across a few articles. I found pictures of Umaga's last match, some wrestlers remembering Eddie Fatu and the statement released by the Anoai family. It was just so emotional. And then when I logged onto YouTube and found an Umaga tribute accompanied by the song Here Without You, I just cried and cried. There's my story. What about yours? It can be long or short. Just mention your story, tell me what you think about the ironic fact, leave a message for Umaga and you'll be in the running for Best Answer. more

Resolved Question: I'm making a trip to get a chance to surf, help?

Ok, so in the summer of 2010 I'll be 17 and would like to take a trip to southern California and learn to surf for the first time. I would like to make it like a 2 week trip or longer, I live in central Texas and I wont be able to drive yet, so I'll be flying. I might even stay for the summer, but I would like to get a job while I'm there so I can keep up with everything and not have my parents send money and stuff. Maybe stay in a hostel because I've heard of how cheap they are, basically this whole is so I can become a surfer, I know I'll love it because I've bodyboarded before and it's a blast. This is mainly for people who live near the beach in southern Cali. any tips or recommendations you could give or any personal help(like the part with the job) Please give as much as possible, email would be great too.Ok youh guys are getting the wrong idea, I'm not doing it to become a pro surfer, it's suppose to be a fun vacation. I'll be doing more than surfing, plus i forgot to mention I might have a few friends with me.By the way I actually just came from the coast of Maryland, and I've done plenty of bodyboarding. And I'm originally from Berlin, so I am a very big city person. more

Resolved Question: my question is simple, why does Faux call themselves a News Channel?

while surfing through the news channels this morning i stopped at Faux news (mostly for giggles) and sure enough they weren't reporting on news. they were telling me how to decorate my christmas tree, the shrubs in front of my house, how to wrap up the lights when the Xmas season is over, etc. after about 10 minutes or so they went into a 10 minute spiel about hollywood movie stars and the latest gossip. mind you, this is 1 day after a presumed "terrorist" attack on a Texas military base. many other news channels are using today for mourning, prayer and actual giving the latest bulletins on today's "news". more

Resolved Question: Will you read and correct my essay please?

It's an expressive essay about my feelings about exercise. It's only a page long in microsoft word. Please correct any grammatical errors, suggest better sentence structure or wording. Adrenaline is pumping through my veins. My whole being is mixed with fear and anticipation. I don’t know whether to give up and face getting mocked, or keep strong and stay in the fight. Before I get to weigh the pros and cons of my options, I am face up on hot black pavement with all of my third grade class standing around me, one boy actually poking me to see if I was alive. That very moment in catching my breath from the fall, I surrendered to dodge ball, and accepted the fact that I am not physically or mentally able to be in any sports involving balls or violent third graders. Throughout middle school and high school I was one of many who dreaded P.E. class. I discovered that unfortunately, humans tend to get more violent and competitive the older they get. Texas is a prime example of how competition and sports rules over ordinary peoples lives. Children today are getting conditioned to work their butts off to go into their parent’s school of choice under a football or basketball scholarship. They no longer see the sport as fun, nor do they see working out invigorating. Now they see it as a job. At nineteen I have yet to be involved in any sport related activity and am proud of it. For the most part, I am healthy. I enjoy my vegetables and am a firm believer in trying everything once. I get at least seven hours a sleep a night and most of all; my body parts are completely intact. Scraping by for a good ten years standing behind the bleachers saved me a lot sprains I’m sure, but I am now seeing my body becoming… womanlier, to say the least. Unfortunately, competition, constant comparing, and pressure are not my thing. Any sport with a team name, count me out. I have learned though that regularly exercising is crucial for your mind as well as your body. I do admit, being involved in sports too much is a better option, if the latter is sitting on your bottom all day clicking around on the computer or channel surfing. One of my personal favorite movies, Wall-e reveals the other extreme society chooses, by doing absolutely nothing. I have found a happy medium to keep me healthy, inside and out. Yoga helps create unity between body, mind, and spirit. My body is balanced, my mind is quiet, and my spirit is sat peace. When I first began, I lost my balance many times and I did get frustrated occasionally, but once I realized I was putting pressure on myself and relaxed, it became easier and soon was a part of my week I could look forward to. Many times, when I am stressed, I find my mind at ease by the end of the hour and sense of vigor I didn’t have walking in. The room may have a faint scent of freshly released souls, but it’s not quite the same as a men’s locker room. If only it was mandatory for every high school football player to take yoga. To have them realize how much more there can be to exercising and fitness besides performing the best or being the strongest would be positive (and little do men realize the class is full of flexible, stable minded, and confident women). more

Resolved Question: To freshmen and sophomores: Is it fair to judge people by what brands they wear?

I'm a frugal spender because of the rescession and I wear Aeropostale clothes, AE jeans, and occasional AE shirts. I pick shirts by comfort and color (there's this AE shirt I have that looks like Dryer lint, so cool!) and could care less about the logos and stuff. What I don't get is why people are saying I'm a loser because I wear Aeropostale (...Wtf?). It's a step down in quality stitching wise, but that dosn't mean it doesn't get the job done. I challenge every wearer of mall clothes from teen stores to put their shirts on a table together and all read off the labels. I bet you they all say 100% cotton, made in Taiwan or some place with slavery/communism. I'm not a horrible person because I hate Abercrombie and Holister. I think Abercrombie is for horny cavemen who feel like shopping at a store with pics of people ready to have sex on the walls. Their stuff is innapropriate, overpriced, and falls apart (source: My friend). This is Texas, and I honestly don't think anyone here gives a crap about beaches and surfing. Therefore I don't like it when people go for this beach bum look and have shirts that have various beaches they don't know plastered on them. I like American Eagle because the colors of the clothes can be really cool sometimes and their jeans are too comfy for their own good. I like Aeropostale for plain stuff I want cheap. So, my question is, WHAT MAKES ME A HORRIBLE PERSON? Is it the fact that I like Star trek? Is it the fact that I don't throw shitloads of cash around? more

I really don't know what to write! Here are some things I learned about her: She's 22, born in California but moved here to Texas a few years ago. She loves surfing.Has a boyfriend and two sisters. She works for American Airlines and gets flight benefits so she travels all the time, it's her passion. Can any of y'all give me some ideas of what I could write about? Resolved Question: Where can I find matte medium and acrylic gesso?

The other day I was surfing the web for ideas, and I came across something that I happened to like very much. But for this project it requires matte medium and acrylic gesso, which I have no clue about. I live here in Texas in the US and wondered if I can find any of these products in local stores. And if not what are other alternatives that I can use? Your help is very much appreciated! =) Thank you! ^^ more

Resolved Question: Best place in California to live for a extreme athlete?

Im currently living in Texas in the military but I'am about to get out and want to move somewhere that will cater to my hobbies. I'm a avid skydiver so being close to a Dropzone is a must. I enjoy body boarding and surfing so close distance to the ocean would be nice, no more than a hour drive away. I also enjoy snowboarding, mountain biking, rock climbing as well as other mild country activities such as hiking and camping... so close to mountains and wilderness is nice... I was considering somewhere toward Northern California as I can be close to the ocean as well as mountains to snowboard in the winter and do other outdoor activities.. Any recomendations on towns that would be a good choice would be much appreciated.. would like to stay away from big expensive citys and towns, I prefer your average small rural town. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Is there a fine for touching a sea turtle?

I was in Galveston Texas this weekend and witnessed a family pick up and put a sea turtle on its back. After looking at me and noticing that I was obviously angered by this they put it down and walked away. The sea turtle was just hanging out in the surf and swam/walked pretty far away. Later another family came by. I was able to barley make out them scooping it up and walking away. I feel horrible that I didn't stop them, but I didn't know enough about the laws to feel comfortable to confront them. I know all sea turtles are protected. What laws/ fines are there about messing with the turtles and what should I do the next time I see one? I know that if I see one nesting there is a hotline to call... I feel like there is not enough public information about this. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: best time to visit Schlitterbahn New Braunfels?

I have been to Schlitterbahn Water park in New Braunfels, Texas, and I love it! however, a group of friends and myself went last year during the summer, and it ended up being pretty much a waste. The lines were ridiculously long (about 1 hour wait+), extremely crouded, which didn't make it that fun. I want to know when would be the best time to go visit the park so we can enjoy the rides and attractions without waiting in super long lines. I was thinking either the very beginning of the summer, a weekday, or the last weekend it's opened. I went onto the website to view the schedule and did notice that there were days where only 1 of the 2 parks was open (Surf n Save). Has anyone ever done that, was it successful? There are also afternoon discount tickets as well. I would only ask for replies back for people that have actually visited the park and have had either successful or unsuccessful trips. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: What is your opinion?

Time Warner is starting a new billing scheme. They have already started it up in some areas of the country like parts of Arizona, Texas and New York. They are due to start it here in NC in June. We would not even know about it if it wasnt for local news breaking the story way before TW was ready for them too. Basically they first start what they say is a "trial metering" to see how much bandwidth each customer uses. Then after the 3 month period they send you a nice little letter stating this is how much bandwith you used in months 'blah blah and blah'. You then will need to pick from one of 4 teirs of bandwith. Now the kicker is, if you go over your allotted bandwidth they will charge you out the wa-zoo. Of course they will tell you that most of their customers wont see a difference in their billing. But they also dont point out that things like watching Netflik movies via internet, downloading songs, playing online games like WoW and pogo, or even downloading updates will just kill your bandwidth. Bascially unless we pay for the business level of bandwidth (ALOT of money) we will only be able to check emails and do basic surfing. Of course some techies out there also say that these little pop up adds will also use bandwidth. We use Vonage for our phone service, so we would also need to be VERY careful making phone calls. In England a company named NTL also tried consumption based billing. There was such outrage, customers were canceling their service with NTL. Within ONE month NTL reversed their new billing policy. If EVERY TW customer effected by this new billing scheme cancels their service, then it will hit TW where it truely hurts, their wallets. But it will take everyone biting the bullet and canceling service for it to be effective. Also, a supervisor named Iris Andrews is someone we can all call and complain too about this outrageous change in terms. We spoke to her last night for 30 minutes. Just call 336-584-1383 and get through to a representative, tell them you need to speek to Iris Andrews, and you should be connected shortly. If we dont stand together in this then TW will keep looking for new and inventative ways to charge us for services that we already pay out the wa-zoo for! UNITED WE STAND!!!!! more

Resolved Question: Budget for backpacking North America?

am backpacking the States for 6-8 months, and I am couch surfing most of it. This means I will be spending very little on accommodation which reduces my costs considerably, but how much will I need per month for extras? My main stops are Boston, New York, Fl, Texas and Cali. I will probably only be taking one train journey a month, and will be going by Amtrak. I am used to living on a tight budget so don't mind that but would like to splash out occasionally. I have already bought my flights from the UK. I was told $1000 a month should be okay, but this doesn't seem very much to me. Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Terrified of being rejected from Texas Tech?

I am terrified beyond belief of being rejected from Texas Tech. I have a 1420 in my SATs i just retook it it should be higher. I have fair grades, i never failed a class, i mostly get Bs. couple As and a few Cs. The reason i need to go to tech is because its the only college i applied to and its march so most college deadlines were due earlier. My mom is constantly threatening if i don't get a scholarship there i would have to go to a community college but i don't really know how all the scholarship business works. I desprately want to leave my house. I have no peace here constant arguing, so many annoying brothers and sisters and i know its wierd but i want to be able to play video games all day or surf the net all day at my free expense. The only way i can do this is by living on my own which is college. Plus the thought of community college is horrfying. I want to be a major video game designer. Its been my dream since the 4th great. It is my severe passion. Has anyone been accepted to tech? i applied in march 3rd which was a while ago. Do you think i have a good chance of getting in? I'm going to major in computer science and whether tech accepts me or not is the difference of 4 next years of bliss or annoying stress. This is serious its all i can think about more
