Open Question: Is this guy crazy: Wisconsin dad drives all the way to Kansas each week to hang on to a job in tough times?
JANESVILLE, Wis. – In the early dawn, after another week building cars, Michael Hanley leaves his job in Kansas. He quickly zips into Missouri, then heads up a ribbon of highway past grain silos and grazing deer, across the frozen fields of Iowa, over the Mississippi River and into the rolling hills of Wisconsin. Finally, he pulls into his driveway — 530 miles later. It's one heck of a haul: more than 1,000 miles roundtrip, 16-plus hours of driving, every week. "I like to say I gave up an eight-minute commute for an eight-hour commute," he says wearily, running a hand though salt-and-pepper hair as he watches his two sons play basketball for the first time this season. After the aging General Motors plant where he worked for 23 years was idled about a year ago, Hanley faced a Hobson's choice: Stay with his family and search for an autoworker's salary ($28 an hour) in a county where more than 40 percent of its manufacturing jobs disappeared from 2006 to 2009. Or hang on to his GM paycheck and health insurance and follow the job, no matter where it leads. In his case, it led to Fairfax, Kan., the same place his brother and two brothers-in-law — also GM workers, and now his roommates — landed. For others, it has been Indiana or Texas. The long commute is not just a story of hard times, tough choices and a shrinking American auto industry. It's also a case study of what happens when an aging industrial town loses an anchor, when workers too old to start over and too young to retire are caught in a squeeze and when economic survival means one family, but two far-flung ZIP codes. ___ Hanley is not one to complain. "GM has been good for us," he says. "This whole town knows that." For 90 years, the sprawling plant — it started out building tractors — became a different kind of family business. Through the decades, sons followed fathers onto the line, sometimes rubbing shoulders as they built Chevy Cavaliers, Caprices, Tahoes, Suburbans and more. Hanley's father and brother worked there. So did his father-in-law, two brothers-in-law and an assortment of uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. But as GM's financial troubles mounted, car and SUV sales fell and gas prices climbed, the automaker closed several plants, eliminating thousands of jobs. Janesville — then the oldest of GM assembly plants — ended production of SUVs in December 2008, months before the automaker received billions of dollars in government loans and filed for bankruptcy. (The factory is on standby status; some hold out hope it will reopen one day.) Some of about 1,200 remaining workers took buyouts or retired; some began new careers. Hundreds more stayed with GM, relocating, commuting or just waiting for an opening. The automaker has about 6,500 laid-off workers nationwide. Even before the doors closed, Hanley began preparing for life after GM. He returned to college to complete two credits he needed for an accounting degree, but an offer in Kansas came first. He didn't hesitate. Auto work these days is like playing musical chairs. You grab an opening where you can. Hanley didn't want to lose his health insurance while his wife, Laura, was receiving costly chemotherapy treatments for a blood disease that will likely lead to cancer. The medical bills last year, she says, were in the tens of thousands of dollars. "There's no way I could possibly go through one treatment without him having insurance," she says. Like many other divided GM families, the Hanleys decided even though the job was important, there were reasons not to uproot everyone: Laura works at their sons' Catholic school, the boys are immersed in band, Scouts, basketball and church, and the sale of a house was an iffy and perhaps money-losing proposition. Hanley knew it would be a trade-off — financial security for a lonely existence. His eyes mist as he talks about what he misses: dinner with his family, coaching basketball, going to the YMCA with his boys, wrestling with them at night, attending their concerts and games, watching them grow up. "It's an adjustment, not being home," he says. "I probably sounded cruel because I said I wouldn't miss my wife as much because she's going to be there when I come back, when I retire. But those years with the kids aren't going to be there. That's the hard part, not being able to be around them. ... I don't know if I really appreciated it before." Hanley plans to commute another 18 months, until he turns 50, hoping for a retirement package then — something, he says, he "prays about every night." Laura, meanwhile, does double duty as a single parent. It's all overwhelming — working, shuttling her sons around, keeping an eye on her elderly mother and worrying about her husband's long commutes. "The kids are tired of seeing mom cry because she's stressed and seeing dad cry when he needs to go back to work," she says. "We're really close — the four of us. You can't talk to moreOpen Question: Will my auto insurance rates go up if the accident is not my fault?
I live in texas and a year ago, rear ended a vehicle in a low speed accident. They made a claim, but I did not. My insurance rates did not go up. Today, I was hit from behind on the ice. The vehicle, a jeep, drove away as I was trying to gain traction and right my vehicle to avoid another collision. I did not get their license plate. I have no choice but to file with my insurance company. Will my auto rates go up? And would it have been any different if my vehicle had been hit in a parking lot without my being there? moreResolved Question: What insurance offers a cheap liability auto insurance?

I have full coverage and is paying the bill. This lady son hit me and she is the owner of the car. She came to the seen and said she would pay with her insurance. The police was called and we said no police report because they knew he was at fault. She gave false insurance. It was no good for about a month. She gave me all her information, phone, address, and everything. I called her and she said she gave me the wrong policy number, so she gave me another policy number. The problem with this other policy was she got it after the wreck. When I say sue, I just want what it costed me and my insurance company. Its $2700.00 moreResolved Question: How can I report a fraudulent auto insurance claim to USAA insurance company?
I know of a USAA insurance client who has filed a fraudulent claim on their insurance. In fact two of them in a two month time span, the first claim they lied about who was the driver of the vehicle at time of accident (real driver had a suspended license) The second one they lied to the adjuster by not revealing their license was suspended, they lied about the circumstances ( they didn't reveal they didn't call police because they were under the influence) they did admit to rear ending the other vehicle but also lied about the exact circumstances and parties involved. And they still haven't filed a police report or accident report to the DMV when required by Texas law when car is undrivable from scene and over $1,000. in damages, the damages to both vehicles exceeded $15,000.00. I can't figure out why USAA didn't investigate. The driver of the other vehicle had a complete different story than the client who was at fault, such as the at fault driver begged them not to call police or report it because they were high and holding illegal drugs, since the driver had baby with her she plead the other girls sympathy that she would go to jail and have her baby taken to CPS. The girl agreed out of sympathy .I am not looking for an insurance quote. I am asking how do I contact USAA and report this person for making fraudulent claims..... moreResolved Question: Are parents liable for 18 yr. old son who refuses to get auto insurance and is in an accident?
Our 18 yr. old son who is still in high school and lives at home refuses to get his own auto insurance policy. The title of the truck is in his name and he owns the truck outright. We had him insured under our own policy when the truck was in our name and when he lived at home previously, but he moved out 8 months ago and we removed him from our auto insurance at that time. He has not had auto insurance since then and recently moved back home but now is refusing to get his own insurance for his truck. If he is ever in an accident, are the parents going to be held liable for damages, etc.? More details: 1) We live in Texas. 2) Our 18 yr. old refuses to work but gets $1200/month in social security checks (in his own name). 3) He does not give us any money to help with expenses. 4) He is on probation already for drug related charges. Thanks for your help...Thanks for your answers/comments. But I believe I am more interested in the civil law around this as it pertains to us as parents if he gets into an accident without insurance. I have not contacted an attorney yet, but I would really like some answers around the civil suit issues that are possible. Thanks. moreResolved Question: Outstanding auto claim with citifinancial what should i do?

In Texas, do you have to show proof of auto insurance before renewing your driver's license? moreResolved Question: 601 and 212 Waivers in Ciudad Juarez - How to proceed?
There is a lady who will have her consular interview in CDJ in the next couple of months. Briefly, her story is as follows: She is a native of Nicaragua. Came to the US in the early 1990's in EWI status. She was arrested in February 1997 for possession of a false auto insurance card in Texas. She was granted Deferred Adjudication for the underlying crime but was picked up by immigration authorities. After an unsuccessful bid for political asylum, she was deported to Nicaragua in October 1997. President Clinton signed the NACARA law in December 1997 allowing nicaraguans to adjust status to lawful permanent resident status. After consulting two prominent immigration attorneys who provided assurances that she qualified under the provisions of NACARA she returned to the US, once again in EWI status. She applied for LPR status under NACARA and was granted an initial employment authorization, which she used to gain a social security number and driver license. She went before the court in Texas regarding the 1997 charge and the case was dismissed outright. She married a US citizen in April, 2000. That same year, her son was born in Houston. So she is now the wife of one citizen and the mother of another. When her appointment date for her adjustment interview came around, she was arrested and removed again from the US for unlawful reentry. She has been living outside the US now for about eight years. Her US Citizen husband petitioned for her and she now has an approved I-130 from USCIS. They are waiting for her appointment with the US Consulate in Ciudad Juarez. Her husband has lived all these years without the benefit of having his spouse in the US. Her son is now 9 and has had to either live outside the US or live in the US without his mother. She has a 21-year-old son who has gained LPR status and a 20-year-old daughter who has done the same. She has two sisters who gained LRP status through NACARA and one of them became a US Citizen last month. So....First question: Should she prepare and file the I-601 and I-212 and forward them to the Consulate now or does she have to bring them to the interview? Second Question: How does she best prepare the waivers for the best shot at being approved? Any other comments, clarifications, or personal experience stories -- any helpful insight you all can add here will be welcome. She made mistakes in her early 20's but just turned 40 and wants to return to the US CORRECTLY this time and 'do it all right.' Thanks in advance! moreResolved Question: Does auto insurance cover a Texas driver with a suspended license if they are in an at fault accident?

Her license was suspended for drug charge 2 yr previous, she took the course, got the sr22 but never mailed the $100. reinstatement fee to Austin, since then she got a driving while license suspended, she pd her fine, already had the sr 22, the judge just lifted that suspension but she didn't pay her $100. reinstatement fee to Austin then either. Here's a little background - My ex and I divorced in 2006. In the original divorce decree we have joint custody (1 week with him and 1 week with me) so there was no child support granted. He's a fireman so he's never been able to have them more than every 3rd day. Once I moved to another town, it was decided that he wouldn't get them during the school week because he didn't want to have to drive them to school the next morning (30 miles). So now he sees them 3 days a month. This also freed him to take a 2nd job as a paramedic in an ER. Now they are 15 and 13. My son is 5 months from getting his license and that's going to make my auto insurance go up a great deal. I finally started asking my ex 6 months ago to help me out financially. After much begging, he started giving me $200 a month. I'm sorry but I can't feed two teenagers and provide for them on that amount. He is making $54,000/yr at the fire dept (no idea what he makes at hospital). He and new wife live in very nice home, 2 new cars, etc. Let's just say that we DON'T...we struggle to the point that I have to buy some of their clothes at second hand stores. Anyway, I went through the Attorney General and requested a modification. The mediation is set for 2/10. What can I expect and can he fight this since the original papers say joint custody? moreResolved Question: Hello little kid, I have candy. Step inside. Won't you answer one?

If you have read my past post on here I guess I have another problem that just accumulated with my auto insurance. I was paid out my claim after the reviewal process and took my car to the body shop, I was told that they had to get a supplement for my vehicle hail damage, well unfortuanetly i was told that they couldnt cover it because my insurace didnt have comprehensive which it did, so they find out that I did, now it seems everything will be fine, wrong Im told now that my claim is false and the adjuster made a mistake with issuing the check, funny thing they are letting me keep the check. My question is how serious can this get? My claim is 100% all true, no reason to lie. Insurance company said they reported this to the texas state insurance office. Can I still use this check? or do I hold it and maybe get an attorney? I havent been issued any kind of lawsuit from them just a letter stating policy was cancelled. I tried talking to the company where i was insured but they give me the run around and turn me down. moreResolved Question: Is it legal for an auto insurer to raise your rate without notification and debit that out of your account?
I reside in Texas and have auto debits monthly for my auto insurance. I just checked and they raised my rate this month without telling me and debited the new rate out of my account, but i agreed to debit monthly my rate but was on a lower rate for over 2 years and up until last month. I never got notice, is this legal? Do i have any rights to recover that extra $ they took for a new rate that i was not notified of? moreResolved Question: Bad Faith Auto Insurance?
Should I hire an attorney for this?, I purchased a policy online a few months ago within the first few days that i had this insurance I had a storm and damaged my vehicle (minor) with hail damaged I submitted out a claim, appraiser was sent they covered the loss sent a check to me, now i take it to the bodyshop and try to have it fixed but they need a supplement, they contact insurance co. but insurance co, makes many excuses over this they state I dont have full coverage which I do, and it was verfied with them that i do, the next few weeks pass and then I finally get a call from a manager at the insurance company stating that they mistakenly sent me out a check because I made a false claim report, they said that they can tell by my pictures before policy was bought that vehicle had damaged (which is an excuse of denying supplement) and stated the the adjuster overlooked everything point here is that insurance co, cancelled my policy by stating underwriting issues, so now Im without insurance coverage, the manager also stated she reported this to the texas state but mentioned she could not put a stop payment on the check and that I could still use it to fix the car or cashout the check... I am really dissapointed at how all this was handelled, Im thinking about getting an attorney, I already discussed and this issue with the Insurance company and Im basicly told that I lied about the claim and they end my call... Should I wait to get an attorney or should I just get one and go from there? I believe this is bad faith insurance coverage, What should I do? I mean I still have the check it is not cashed out, I cant really do much with this check everyone charges an arm and a leg, can they file insurance fraud charges and if so even though I know I did everything right should I get an attorney?I havent received a letter of the insurance company intent to take me to court, they sent a letter closing my policy for reason: Underwriting Reasons and advised me they reported this to the Texas State. I still also have the check they sent to me because its not about the money, I wanted them to fairly pay for the damages for my car, I was told by their manager to cashout the check or pay for the damages only with that check, as you read above I cannot pay anyone this check because everyone charges alot more than what I received. moreResolved Question: What would you do if you were in my Situation of Paying Auto Insurance Deductible?

Texas law for auto insurance requires liability coverage, which includes damage to other people's property. The way I understand it, that means the at-fault party's insurance company is obligated to pay for the damages to the other party's property (up to the limit). The law is specific about how quickly the insurance company must pay its policyholder, but it only seems to say that the company must act in good faith to make a fair and prompt settlement on third-party claims. If the collision occurred in June and it's now November, and the claims adjuster has made absolutely no effort to settle the claim (he won't even tell me whether he's coming to see my vehicle), then it is reasonable to state that he's acting in bad faith? In a legal sense, I mean -- not just that he's being a jerk. And in case it comes up: no, the fault of their policyholder is not in question at all. There's no reason for the delay, and he hasn't offered any excuses as to why nothing has been done ... he just says that he'll get back to me and then ignores me for months. I'll only bring my insurance company into this situation as a last resort; I'd rather contact his company with a complaint, and move from there. I appreciate the help! moreResolved Question: Are there attorneys who can erase items from your driving history?

PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS because this question is not as easy as it looks. I am 21. The only thing I ever took is Driver's Education. I still have my Certificate Of Completion. I have an account with Department Of Public Safety. It is red--a photo ID. I am going to take the vision and written test soon but the driving test is going to be VERY difficult. I do not have a car. I can buy one, but I can't legally register it* when I get it. I can use a friends cars or extended familys cars but that won't work either* *= Because to register a car, getting insurance, etc... I would have to have my driver's license. To get a driver's license, I need to have insurance!! That won't work when I get my own vehicle. AND ALSO I looked at the driver manual and it says that I need to bring: "valid proof of auto liability insurance if you're taking the driving test". This means that is IMPOSSIBLE for me to get my lisence and insurance... right?? unless somebody is generous enough to temporarily add me to their insurance??????? Also in case you are wondering my family household where I grew up is VERY unsupportive. I do not live with them. (and if I did, it would not help) I live in Oklahoma. My "ex" and I purchased a car for our daughter before we divorced. It is not in the divorce decree since it is her car and not mine. However, the financing was in his name. So, when he paid off the car, he kept the title. He promised she could have the title on her 18th birthday which is coming up in a few days. I talked to him yesterday about it and now he is trying to break his promise. He does not want her to have that title. He will not give an answer as to why or anything. Here in Texas, possession is 9/10's of the law and we (my daughter and I) have has possession of this car since it was purchased and it is on my auto insurance. I need to know how to force his hand on that title or can I file for lost title. Now, if I do that, the lost title replacement will still be in his name and I need to insure it will be sent to my house and not forwarded to his. So, if anyone has any ideas of how to go about this, I would greatly appreciate it.After talking to my daughter last night about this, she said she will talk to him and remind him of his promise. He has lied and broken promises to her in the past and their relationship is shaky anyway. It is something he did on his own without any help from me. She has even asked for her name to be changed. We are getting ready to move to Pennsylvania and she really wants to take this car with her. I know it will be easier on us with insurance and such if the car was in her name. Hard to keep repeating the same old song in detail every time we turn around when it comes to the "ex". My husband said that if he does not turn over the title when it comes time to move, we will drive it to his house, drop it off and let her have one of our vehicles till we can replace it with a jeep.I just feel that if someone gives their word, they should keep it. He made a promise and it is time for him to uphold that promise. That has been her car all this time and she loves that car. It is a sports car and what teen age girl does not love her sports car. moreResolved Question: rear ended - so confused on what to do!?
i have never been in an accident in my 14 years of driving, and never even filed an insurance claim. but this week, i was rear ended - twice! the first time was by a car and we were driving maybe around 1mph. not fast at all. i called my insurance company to see what to do, they said to take it to an auto body shop, but i decided not to do anything. the second time was by an suv (i drive a sedan), and the suv's front bumper was a little messed up. I was concerned so i took my car to a body shop (w/o calling my insurance company first) to get an estimate, and they gave me a quote for $800 (i need my bumper replaced) and told me not to tell my insurance company that i had been rear ended twice, otherwise i would have to pay 2 deductibles. i live in texas, btw, if it matters. now i dont know what to do. i already told the insurance company about the first hit - i think. i just called them and spoke to someone about what to do, but didnt file a claim. they did look me up by my name though, so i am assuming they have a record that i called. also, what if they total my car? i have a 12 year old car thats only worth about $1500, and thats pretty close to $800. i cant afford a new car, thats why i keep driving mine.... it still runs great too. any advice is greatly appreciated. im so worried about what to do! moreResolved Question: Can anybody give me some directions on life itself?
I've had a pretty hard life. I grew up in a family of 5 brothers and 4 sisters. My dad constantly drank and beat us. He was physically and mentally abusive to us kids and my mother. It seems back then that no one carerd and we were on our own with this mess. my mother was very religous and my father was not. My mother would take us to church in a taxi cab every sunday while my dad was out drinking in the bars or working. He'd always come home drunk and abuse us. He Molested my sisters and also my nieces. We lived next to his family in south Louisiana all our lives and they would work us kids like slaves in anything they had to do. Mostly make gardens and upkeep. But still they would degrade us any chance they had. Even though my mother was kind hearted and wouldn't hurt a fly they didn't like her because she was from texas and Baptist. When I grew up my brother and I was working on a drilling rig together and I witnessed him getting killed. I took it very hard. Got home and it seems that my dad was only worried about the money from the insurance. That was very upseting to me. My dad died in 1993. One of my sisters died last year in an auto accident. I feel as if no one cares for me and am always depressed and anxious and can't relax. I have spent most of my life feeling depressed and anxious and feel as if I have no where to turn. My poor oldest brother is in a hospital with his wife in a coma due to a anuresum. I'm in a job that I can't stand. I could go on and on. I just needed to get this off my shoulders. and out in the open. What help could I get. I tried everything from exersise to meds and natural remedies and nothing. Is that true? moreResolved Question: How 2 no if my ambulance-chasing lawyer's doing me right?
A close friend of mine was recently involved in a severe auto accident in which he was not at fault. He was working/on-the-clock at the time of the accident. A compact car had a blow-out on its doughnut while passing on the shoulder at a very high rate of speed. The tire blew when the driver, who had no drivers license, or it was suspended- he'd only been out of prison for a month...over-corrected when the doughnut blew when it dropped off the shoulder. My friend was driving a 1-ton dually pulling a 10,000 bumper-pull trailer. He had his seat belt on and his air bags both deployed. Upon impact, the truck spun off from the trailer, rolled two times and slammed to a stop against a fence, resting on its drivers side. My friend's ankle was pinned down near the brake pedal. The compact car hit my friend head-on at approximately 88 m.p.h., spun around and hit the trailer, also in the front of the compact car. The entire front end of the car was gone. The car's engine skidded several hundred yards down the road and came to rest, still on fire. The passenger, who owned the car, was deceased, because she was crushed from the neck down. Her boyfriend was flown from the scene. His legs were crushed, he had some other gruesome injuries, and was in a coma for 3 days. He's currently facing 5 different charges. One will be some sort of manslaughter. I cannot remember the proper legal term, but to describe it here, if the toxicology test comes back negative, it'll be involuntary murder and if the toxicology test comes back positive, it'll be voluntary murder. My friend's employer had workman's comp, so my friends medical bills are taken care of, 100%. He's also drawing a good % of his salary so he's not hurting for money right now. He suffered superficial contusions and a severely broken leg which required 2 surgeries because in days gone-by, before the 2 surgery system, this kind of break had a 50% chance of requiring amputation. Consequently, he's now got so many pins in his leg, it literally looks like the Eiffel Tower, or maybe a knitting patter for a nice sweater. He has more pin than bone in his lower leg. No one has mentioned anything about removing these. He's been told that if he follows the doctor's orders, he won't need physical therapy. No one has mentioned anything about him not being able to do everything he did previously. His job isn't riding a pogo stick or anything that would specifically stress that part of his leg. My friend has an attorney, but recently found out that the attorney wasn't representing him for his personal property. That's not really a big deal, but now he's wondering what he should have asked to clarify this, or what he should be asking along the way. For instance, he hasn't been told how much the atty. is seeking on his behalf. All he has been told is: This is a claim right now. If the insurance company denies it, then it becomes a lawsuit. Insurance companies usually pay claims, rather than take them to court, when there is a fatality. The atty. gets 1/3. Workman's Comp gets reimbursed 2nd, after the atty. gets paid. My friend keeps whatever is left over. He's not after a settlement, he just wanted someone involved in his medical care who had his best interest at heart, so to speak. The case is in Texas. If this was your lawyer, what would you be asking/doing, in general? He's just looking for some experience to draw upon, if nothing else, he says. moreResolved Question: can you answer any of these?

The above mentioned trial is more or less completely absent from the media --- which is odd because full press coverage was given to the President a police Sgt and a professor who got into a spat Bush gave 700 and then another 800 billion to the housing industry to save the insurance companies of the US from bankruptcy Paul Craig Roberts and a simple search of the internet reveals that a startling number of Americans are living in tents --- homeless The auto sector has been gutted Unemployment is a growing problem Obama -- continues to use the services of XE or Erik Princes outfit of crusaders --- Obama also not to be outdone by Bush announced a trillion dollar running deficit of out of pocket expenditure and another 2.27 in guaranteed loans In that past year alone --- Bush spent billions per week on the war in Iraq --- gave bail out packages of 1,500 billion and Obama guaranteed in total 2.27 trillion --- plus 1 trillion in out of pocket spending California is bankrupt -- there is talk of Texas leaving the Union -- New Orleans has not been rebuilt and has not recovered from Katrina Detroit is in shambles and Chicago is still the capitol of mobs gangs and other undesirables Kansas is having severe budget problems and Florida is close to collapse Troops are going to stay in Iraq Troops are going to go from Iraq to Afghanistan War with Iran is still possible -- and the Russians are angrier than ever with nuclear subs off the coast and weapon programs in space being launched --------------------------- Is that about right --- ? Really ? If so how much longer can the US survive as a nation ? moreResolved Question: Too much for Auto Insurance?
My husband and I (ages 25 and 21) have an 06 Scion, bought new, with full-coverage. We pay $1477.77/6mo, or about 250/month. This seems really high, but I'm just curious - for full-coverage in Texas on a 'new' vehicle, is this excessive? We haven't had any accidents/tickets, etc. moreTop Texas Auto Insurance Links
