Resolved Question: Why Are Women Leaving Marriage in Droves?

"Society does two things to men and women that make more and more of today's marriages destined to die. 1. It tells men what they are supposed to desire in a woman. 2. It then tells women the way they are supposed to be to become desirable. Since women are not that way, but feel pressure to become that way, many marriages are doomed from the beginning. And many that do not end in divorce continue in various degrees of unhappiness, particularly for the women involved. Statistics tell us that women instigate more than 75% of today's divorces. This flight of women from marriage has prompted books such as Maggie Gallagher's The Abolition of Marriage: How We Destroy Lasting Love. Gallagher calls for a return to fault divorces as a "cure" for divorce. She feels the individual's right to choice and self-gratification has brought an "institution" to the brink of extinction. Gallagher writes, "As a private association of two individuals, marriage may have as many meanings and as many goals as there are private individuals. But as a public institution, marriage has one overriding purpose: to create an environment in which it is safe to have children." Yet marriage is composed of two adults, both of whom have a right to happiness. Statistics have shown single women as happier than married women for decades. University of Texas sociologist Norvel Glenn finds the happiness of single women continues to grow. In addition, he found that, despite no-fault divorce enabling easy marriage exit and despite the high divorce rate, the number of happy marriages are still falling--from more than 50% in 1973 to less than 40% today. If we are seeing an enormous increase in divorce, we should be seeing only happy marriages left. We aren't. The divorce rate has climbed, the number of unhappy marriages that remain has climbed, and the happiness of single women has climbed... What does this mean for the institution of marriage? Add another factor says Gallagher, "Part of the relative instability of two-career couples may be due to self-selection: Wives with less traditional attitudes may be more likely to both work full time and divorce. But there is another explanation that has been mostly ignored: Full-time working women, especially women who are working against their wishes, may be more prone to divorce because they get less from marriage. "A woman at home, (part or full time) who chooses divorce must give up her entire way of life. By contrast, a wife who works full time and divorces can simply continue to do what she is doing anyway. Life may get a little harder--or even a lot harder--but for a wife with a full-time job, a change in her marital status does not seem to entail a radical transformation of her day-to-day lifestyle." "Oh, my, my, my," says Society with a capital "S," while wringing its hands and shaking its head, "If we could just get those women back to the farm... If we could just get that genie back in the bottle..." Is it true? If we could just get these women back to the farm; if we could just get women to stay home again, would they be afraid to leave marriage because the kids might starve? If we could just get those women under control again, reverse those child support laws, and go back to the old ways, would everything be better?" http://www.cyberparent.com/women/marriage1.htmHappy 2 guy, Wake up and smell the coffee, divorce is at epidemic proportions. There were 24 married couples in my sub, white middle class america 5 years ago, out of 24 now there are 13 left that are still married. I'll bet it's even higher than that now do to the economic situation. Marriage is like a fast food, people want it fast, eat quick and throw out the left overs, then go back for another fast meal. more

Open Question: divorce and child help (Idaho)?

I am finally almost done with my divorce and it states right now for the father to have 2 nights a week with the child. I now have no place to live and need to live with my parents in California or with my fiance (which I'm marrying after the divorce is final) in Texas. My fiance makes good money in Texas and can provide for us. If I move to California we will still marry. My question is can Texas be an option to the courts? Or are they going to put the child where I have immediate family? I think the best idea would be to get the divorce done, re open the custody case and move to california; after that is established marry my fiance and in law they could not prohibit me from moving to Texas because it's where my husband can best provide for us. Anyways, what's your guys advice? more

Open Question: Help? Best answer gets 10 points!?

So, I'm 15. My parents are divorced. I have lived with my mom my whole life in Michigan. My family and friends are all there. Right now I live with my dad in Texas. And I hate living with him. If i really wanted to start something and cause a family crisis then I could tell my mom and she would get the court involved and my dad in some kind of trouble. But i don't want anybody in trouble, and my dad refuses to let me move back even though its really not my decision its my moms. I haven't told my mom yet, I mentioned it to my mad when we were arguing but I think he thinks im not serious because I was mad at him. Then If I do move back, how do I get me and my belongings to Michigan? I have a chihuahua and a guitar and a keyboard and a desk and bed. Open Question: Why do i feel this way? (Over a girl)?

So this girl and I, we have had an on and off type of relationship. She is really beautiful, and I'm just one of those guys that never get lucky with girls (as in relationship wise not sex lol) anyways ever since we saw each other, she was my first girl friend and i was her first boyfriend and all that good stuff. Then we broke up a year ago because she wasn't "ready" for a relationship, and the understanding guy that i am accepted that i was still very heartbroken, because as my first love, i probably over reacted and fallen in love way to fast. So i was very very sad, ive never been so sad before in my life but i eventually got over it. and, ever since last year we were still on good terms, we hung out a few times, and still kept contact with each other. Once we tried working it out during last summer, but she still wasn't ready, and did that again about 4 months ago. Now we hung out again lol about 2 days ago, and she confessed her love to me, and said that all the shit that has happened in my life (parents divorce, and other stressful things) is over. And she is ready to try this again. And just me and my expierence with her, i saw out of all the times we hung out in past. That night was the one night i could physcial tell and emotionally tell she was serious this time. Now comes to the problem of why i feel this wierd way.. She is off to San Antonio, Texas for Six Flags and Riverwalk with family. And the night before she left she would text/call me alot and i could see a difference in her. Now that she is gone, she hardly texts me and her answers are short and not as "fun" as they used to be. and i constantly have this "butterfly" feeling in my stomach all the frikken time!! I don't know if im just going crazy and over reacting. Oh and you have to understand, i don't get alot of attention from girls, i mean im a senior in high school, and ive only ever had one girlfriend that lasted one month lol. (which was her) so its not like im a chick magnet at all. Bu im just getting scared that maybe she lost interest yet again! and i really have liked her for all this time. I just don't want to get my hopes up and then get it crushed like they have been for the past 3 times we tried. But this time she acted differently and she was a more mature women than before. Which is why im giving it another shot. I just constantly feel nervous, and i want to be with her all the time! And im just amazed that a girl even considers dating me and more ;). Pretty much i just need to know why im freakiing out so much, and why i constantly have this "butterfly" feeling in the pit of my stomach... Its killing me, and this time i don't want to lose her :( But i can't stand when my heart is being played with. It hurts too much... any comments, suggestions, or advice will be greatly appreciated thx :) more

Resolved Question: Is refinancing my mortgage the answer?

I have been divorced for 5 years and my credit is being dragged thru the mud for the fact that I never went thru a lawyer to get all the details worked out of the divorce. i.e. division of property, etc. I just wanted out as fast as possible. Since then, my ex has been living in the house we bought while married and has been making the payments with the money she gets from me every month. Until recently there has been no problems. Since my name is still on the mortgage I get updates from the bank and I found out that the payments are 120 days behind and getting close to the foreclosure stage. We dont talk so I cant find out what the problem is (nor would she tell me if I did ask) and my credit is diving fast. I'm not familiar with the legal aspect of this so I was wondering. If I refinance under my name only, can I force her out of the house under texas law since it was not awarded to either party during the divorce? more

Open Question: What is the difference between Attorney General and Domestic Relations office in Tx?

My soon to be ex husband pays his ex wife child support through domestic relations office and I applied through OAG's office. I now have an attorney who is working closely with OAG's office, I just learned that they agreed on the divorce decree my attorney submitted to their office and signed off on it. The problem now is that I am worried my ex will not sign the decree...If Attorney General signed off on it and my ex will not agree what happens next? Can he hire an attorney and ignore what OAG's office has already agreed to? My ex lives in another state and more than likely will not attend a hearing in Texas because he has child support warrant from ex wife. He is livid that I filed for divorce and that he is now responsible for arrears in the amount of 2k. He wants me to start at ZERO and then he will pay! Of course my attorney said he was nuts for even thinking that anyone would agree to that. He has not seen his kids in almost a year and has already moved in with his gf and three step kids. I don't understand why he doesn't stop to think about how hard it is on me supporting our child alone. I allow my daughter and him to talk/text whenever they like but sometimes I feel like cutting off all communication between the two until he starts to support her. But then I realize that I will only be hurting my daughter and she will probably hate me in the future so I just stay out of it. Thanks for any advice. more

Voting Question: Separation,Still Legally Married,Husband Filed Taxes,Claimed Kids,Can't Get Info?

My husband and I recently seperated, in October of last year, although not legally. Technically and legally we are still married, even though he is now in Florida and I am in Texas with the kids waiting until I can file for divorce. He filed taxes for 2009, but claimed the kids. I thought to do this, you have to file as 'married filing jointly', since we are married legally. If he did do this, then my signature was forged. If he filed as 'married filing seperately', then he must have said I had no job, which I did. If he got my job information, then it was against my consent. I am unsure of how he was able to claim the kids, and I can't even get information on the return because I'm not him. How do I figure out these issues? I was also wondering if being a victim of domestic violence has any effect on my taxes when I file, and if - when I do file here shortly - when it goes to the IRS, will they catch anything I don't know about from my husband's taxes, such as using my name, or other exemptions or credits he wasn't supposed to claim. I have recieved none of his return and was also wondering if I am even entitled to any. more

Voting Question: Is there a time limit in the state of Texas in which to have a DNA test and have that absolve your rights ?

My husband was married previously, to a woman that left him for another man and conceived a child with that man. That man broke up with her and at the time she somehow convinced my husband that it was possible that it could be his child and lied about the due date and conception dates to him. However, when he was deployed to Korea the child was born months after it were even possible for it to be his (and once the child was born, it was obvious that she was African American, like the other man that his wife had been with) and once he returned to Texas from Korea he began the process of divorcing her. He had no choice but to take custody of the child that was not his (and that he did not want) because the court would not have chosen to seperate the two children (he had a child with her prior to her conceiving a child with another man) and he did not want to lose his son. He thought that he could return the second child that was not his to her mother, once he was certain that he would not lose custody of his son. Unfortunately he was sent to Iraq, and by the time he returned he was scared that he would be forced to pay child support for that child if he returned her to her mother because he thought he had waited too long for a DNA test (he left the child with his parents to raise, as he did not want to raise a child that was not his) He finally, two years ago, returned the child to her mother, and I want to know whether or not all my husband needs to do is to have a DNA test, and if that will absolve his rights to the child and that is all he needs to no longer be legally considered her father (he wants his name off of the birth certificate, and for that child not to share his last name) Or if it is true that he has left it too long, and that the only option now is for him to sign over his parental rights (his ex wife is in total agreement to him signing over his rights) I am sure you all can understand that he just does not want to be legally responsible or considered the father of a child that is not his, nothing against the child, but she is the product of an affair and obviously that is a very hurtful thing for him. I know I would feel the same way that he does. I was hoping that it were still possible that we could get a DNA test and that would absolve him of all his rights, without having to go through the process of getting a lawyer to have him sign over his rights, and to try to get the birth certificate changed by admissions that he is not the father, we'd rather a DNA test that would absolve him of his responsibilities and that he could then automatically be taken off the birth certificate with proof he is not the father. Thanks in advance to anyone who answers this question. It is highly personal, so I hope you are providing only solid legal advice and not personal opinions. We have spoken to two different lawyers and the consensus is unclear, one said a dna test would solve everything still, another said that was not the law and that he could only sign over his rights. He has not seen this child for over two years, so would it be likely that a Judge would rule that he should not be able to sign over his rights because they want him to "stay involved" .. He is not involved, and never will be. more

Voting Question: My sister has received a petition for divorce by her husband.?

She does not want this divorce but her husband has no desire to reconcile. Her lawyer suggests she files a counter suit to protect her rights, but what is the difference between filing a counter-petition and saying "yes" to the petition. What if she said "No" to the petition? And last, her husband does not have a lawyer, they have a child and he commited adultery. (They live in Texas, a no fault state)I should add that my sister does not want to be married to a cheater, this is why she got the attorney. She just hates that her relationship has come to this, that her husband has become a lying jerk and that her daughter has to suffer because of it. more

Resolved Question: Does Rove book necessitate apology inside Bush's Decision Points (forthcoming this fall)?

here's some preliminary review comments about the Karl Rove book and the rationale for the Bush-Cheney decision to invade Iraq in March 2003 -- WASHINGTON — Karl Rove, the chief political adviser to President George W. Bush and architect of his two successful campaigns for the White House, says in a new memoir that Mr. Bush probably would not have invaded Iraq had he known there were no unconventional weapons there. Mr. Rove adamantly rejects accusations that the administration deliberately lied about the presence of such weapons in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. But he acknowledges that the failure to find them badly damaged Mr. Bush’s presidency, and he blames himself for not countering the narrative that “Bush lied,” calling it “one of the biggest mistakes of the Bush years.” Mr. Rove’s book offers the most expansive account yet of the Bush presidency by one of the people most responsible for it. Addressing the most controversial and consequential moments of Mr. Bush’s eight years in power, Mr. Rove takes responsibility for the widely criticized Air Force One flyover after Hurricane Katrina and writes that he secretly cried in his White House office when he learned he would not be indicted in a C.I.A. leak case. For the most part, his book, “Courage and Consequence: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight,” to be published by Threshold Editions on Tuesday, is an unapologetic defense of Mr. Bush and his presidency, and takes aim at Democrats, the news media and disloyal Republicans for what he describes as hypocrisy, deceit and vanity. He also recounts his hardscrabble upbringing in a family broken by divorce and his mother’s suicide. The book is the latest in a stream by top figures from the Bush administration. Mr. Rove’s may carry special interest given his outsized reputation as the political maestro who vaulted a Texas governor to the presidency and guided him through a tumultuous tenure that saw war, terrorism, natural disaster and recession. A hero to conservatives and villain to liberals, Mr. Rove may be the most high-profile White House aide in modern times. In offering his take on history, Mr. Rove ruminates on what would have happened had Mr. Bush known the truth about the absent unconventional weapons, known as weapons of mass destruction, or W.M.D., in Iraq. While the opportunity to bring democracy to the Middle East as a bulwark against Islamic extremism “justified the decision to remove Saddam Hussein,” Mr. Rove says the suspected weapons were the primary justification for war. “Would the Iraq War have occurred without W.M.D.? I doubt it,” he writes. “Congress was very unlikely to have supported the use-of-force resolution without the W.M.D. threat. The Bush administration itself would probably have sought other ways to constrain Saddam, bring about regime change, and deal with Iraq’s horrendous human rights violations.” www.nytimes.com -- Peter Baker article more

Voting Question: i think my dad and step mom might be getting divorced.?

my dad has been married to my step mom for mm about 5 years and im 14 i have one bilogical brother whos only 7 and my step mom is the only one helping him because he has adhd and he has many other various problems that result in slow learning. if she leaves my dad i will be the only girl around and my brother will have no hope because at this moment my dad lives in texas and i live with my step mom and her two children and my brother in washington state. I will either have to move to Texas and babysit my brother all day everyday for the rest of time till i move out or, my dad will move here and i will still baby sit. either way my dads job pays well and he works very hard long shifts so. before when he was with my mom we went to a daycare and it was HORRIBLE all we did was sit in timeout all day long after school everyday til about 7 because my dad and mom were not together. and my step mom will have to get a job if they divorce [shes a stay at home mom right now] and her kids will as well have to be babysitted. her kids are 11 and 9 so...! however there is one more option for my dad if my step mom leaves him, my dad could sent us to live with my mom in portland oregon wich would be his last result hed probably send us to live with our grandma first, my mother was a very long time drug user and i dont want to move with her and everytime im with her i get very bad 2nd hand smoke cough that is TERRIBLE. anyways any one got any supporting ideas. more

Resolved Question: Texas Hardship License?

I got my permit a few days ago, and I was wondering if I'd be eligible to apply for a "Hardship License". My parents are divorced, so my dad works 30+ miles away. My mom is a nurse and works everyday (internship) and soon to be 3+ 12 hour shifts. I have soccer after school, and sometimes would have to wait three hours before getting a ride back home. I also have orchestra rehearsals before school, and I have to miss them because I cannot get a ride to school after my mom leaves. I'm hoping to find some advice, and hear peoples thoughts on my ability to get a Hardship License in Texas :) ThanksIt says on the application... The Department may issue a driver license to any minor who satisfies the requirements if the Department finds that (1) the failure or refusal to issue such license to any such minor will work an unusual economic hardship on the FAMILY of the applicant for the license, (2) the license should be granted to the minor because of the sickness or illness of members of the family of the applicant, or (3) a license should be granted to the minor because he is regularly enrolled in a vocational education program and requires a driver license to pursue the program and has completed an approved course in driver education. How do I go about obtaining a divorce decree through the Texas courts? Do I have to hire a lawyer? I can't afford one. Also, do either of us have to go to court or meet in person? Again, we both agree on all terms of the divorce, it's just a matter of getting the papers drawn up and filed. I'm not really sure how to even go about starting this process. Here is the deal, my hubs and I have been married for 6 years in July.. it's not working out at all! We just moved back to Texas after spending 3 years overseas, we married in WA state. Here is where it gets hard, we have two daughters whom I want to take out of state as soon as I file because he is getting NO rights to one and only summers with the other... can I do that? and because we are moving to another state that isnt WA or TX can I file in the new state or do I have to wait and file here?the reason I want such cruel custody is because he is physically and emotionally abusive forwards our 4 year old and I dont want it to happen for our 1 year old (who as born while he was deployed). the man has been lost to video games, yahoo chatrooms and the bar. more

Resolved Question: I got my husband to sign the waiver and petition, but he vanished. What can I do?

I got my husband to sign the Waiver and the Petition for Divorce documents. I filed those papers. Suddenly, he's gone and I cannot find him to sign and notarize the rest of the documents. No one knows where he is and has not heard from him in weeks. We don't have any kids or any property, and we live in Texas. What can I do to finish this up? I can't afford to hire a lawyer. more

Resolved Question: I'm scared to death. I want a divorce. My husband is abusive and blames me for being that way. For years I?

For years I believed him. He put me down with insults.. brought up ugly things about my past.. put my body down after I had a baby.. Then the violence started to get worse. Prior to our daughter the fighting would get out of control and was both of our faults. We were kids and stupid. Now he loses his temper and flips out on me. Today actually I confronted him about some email I found to some other woman saying " Did you forget about me?" and I was pissed. Also found some dumb porn on his phone also.. I told him I was done. He took all my clothes and thru them on my bed. Thru a suitcase at me. He kept getting in my face and I pushed a fan at him.. he then ripped me down by my hair and kicked me several times in my shoulder and ribs. I'm so scared but I have to leave him. I have no job.. no education and have been at home raising my baby girl. I DONT WANT HER TO GROW UP SEEING THIS! I am usually happy and carefree when he's gone but when he's around I cant even lift my head with any shred of pride. Im really scared guys. Idk how to do this.. I was just hoping here I might find some reasources and help. I dont want this life for my daughter. I have zero self esteem now and need some serious help to get my head right again. If you know anything I might be able to do.. in the state of Texas PLEASE let me know. I know that this effects my child. I dont want that for her. Please dont post things that won't help me. You can not even imagine my desperation right now. I have no family. No friends here. No place to go. No money (He took it all and has his name only on the bank account.) I scared shitless but need to toughen up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.. :((Thanks guys and yes I do have proof. Im just scared. I have been out of work for so long and only been at home raising our daughter. I am terrified I wont be able to make it out there and he will try to get custody! He already says he wants joint and if I fight him he will spend every cent he has fighting me in court.... more

Voting Question: Delinquent Texas unemployment tax?

Long story but I married a man who owned a business. He was already delinquent in this tax (unknown to me), sole proprietorship, never any involvement with company, no monetary gain (in fact owes me $30k for a personal loan), my name not involved with business. Divorced, now Twenty TWO, yes 22 years later, they withdrew THIS tax from MY checking account, plus 22 year worth of interest. Divorced 12 years....no contact, attempt to collect. Divorce decree states he is responsible for all debts incurred in his name, same for me. Is there a statute of limitations here? It took me 2 minutes on internet to locate him. In mean time, my mortgage, car note and utilities payments bounced. I called the AG office, they say this is illegal, doesn't help me right now. Are they right or just placating a crying woman? more

Resolved Question: Is it different to file for divorce vs. filing for custody if the child is unborn?

I know in Texas, a divorce can not be finalized if the wife is pregnant. I am wanting to have the custody battle in Texas rather than in Colorado where the father is. I need to know if he files for divorce up there first, will the custody also take place under that divorce or will there have to be a second petition made for custody after the birth? Would I be able to file for custody here even though he filed for divorce there? I also need to know, if he does file there, will they be able to force me to fly there for hearings if I have no funds to do so? Any help would be great. I don't have the funds to contact a lawyer. more

Resolved Question: I am embarrassed that my parents are actually brother and sister?

Seriously I am embarrassed for any dates of mine to meet both of my parents as they are brother and sister. I have just lived with the lie that they are divorced and that one set of grandparents is dead. Thankfully my dad and maternal grandparents still live out of state. They still live in Mississippi while my mother and me have moved to Texas. So basically I just have to introduce friends and dates to my mother. If it ever came a time that I would get seriously involved with a date such as marriage I don't know how I would get around them knowing about this terrible secret. more

Resolved Question: How do I deal with the emotional aspects of a divorce?

My husband and I are about to start the process of a divorce. I am saving up my money for the next few weeks to make enough to fly myself and my dog back home to Oregon from Texas. I am very upset, but we have fallen out of love for eachother and it's the best thing for us. I want to fight, but he has given up. I think we just got married too young. I still love him, but I feel like I am wasting my time and so does he. I just know that I will be a wreck and cry myself to sleep every night once I'm away from him... But do you think I will ever move on and get over it? I'd love some advice here. Thank you all sooo much more
