Resolved Question: Can anyone give me the names of some African-American (yes BLACK) teens that are making a difference?

I want to know the names of some Black-American teens or young children who are making a difference in the world or in their community. I am 12 years old and I am writing 5 essays about African-American heroes past and present I would really like to include some present day unsung figures. I would like to turn this in to my principal because my school never does anything to celebrate Black History Month. I asked a teacher why we didn't celebrate Black History Month and she said "well there's no White History Month". ARE YOU KIDDING ME! White people are constantly in history books and right now I take a Texas History class and only ONE black person was mentioned. His name was Hendrick Arnold and he was a runaway slave that helped fight for Texas's independence. When I asked this teacher why Texas waited a whole year to free the slaves (who were free and just didn't know it) she replied"They were being treated better than most slaves". Since when is being a slave at all being treated good? I used to like this teacher because she seemed to be aware that the other teachers and mainly my principal are a little on the prejudiced side. (I can't say racist because not all of them are, but they sure do like to use the words "Porch Monkey" and "Jigga Boo" a lot. I am not just saying this because they are white an I am Black, (well actually I am Bi-Racial my mom is Black and My dad is Mexican) but when people see me they see a light-skinned long-haired(which I have had at least 4 teachers ask me if it was a weave because i have curly hair and don't straighten it too often but when i do it's past my butt) black girl with full lips. I am going to ask the Principal one more time if she will consider celebrating Black History Month and if she doesn't I am going to our local news station and speaking out about it. My school is predominately white and in the very small town Crandall. Everyone is related and seems to only help themselves and their friends. I can't go to the school board because everyone on it already works at the school and have kids that go there and are in my grade(no exaggeration I swear) I can recall at least 8 times were a student has said something racist to me in the last 2 years and the teachers and principals won't do anything about it. Did I mention I was the only Black or Mexican Cheerleader ever in the history of Crandall(they have even had 5 male cheerleaders!)?I want UNKNOWN and or Unsung people!! We have enough black rappers and actors and athletes we need more scientists doctors lawyers and politicians. Did you know that there are no professional Black -American paleontologists which is what I want to be when I grow up?well i kind of want people no one has heard much about. These are my other 4 Lyda D. Newman-Invented improved hair brush Ruby Bridges- Black girl in all white school(hee hee see the symbolism in that) Annie Easley-Computer Scientist Theora Stephens- Invented Pressing Iron/Curling IronAnd thank you Well Below Par in Mental Acumen. I would choose you as a best answer but i am not on that level of points yet more

Great Britain's claim to the Oregon country centered on voyages by two English explorers and on a fur trade with the Indians. The United States also claimed the area, citing the discovery of the Columbia River by a Boston sea captain and a fur trade that developed in the early 1800s. Spain held the earliest claim to the Oregon country. Claims by the United States and European countries were based on the fur trade. The United States joined several European nations in making claims to the Oregon country. 22. Resolved Question: Why is it so easy for liberal progressive marxists to change our history in textbooks?

But the committees clearly went beyond just adding in a few minorities. The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Brooke Terry obtained a list of the recommendations. Among them: First grade: • In the section on holidays, customs, and celebrations, it removes Independence Day and Veterans’ Day. • In the section on holidays, customs, and celebrations, it removes anthems and mottoes of Texas and the United States. • In the list of character traits of good citizenship, it removes “a belief in justice and truth.” • Removes the Liberty Bell from the list of patriotic symbols. Third Grade • Removes references to Daniel Boone, Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, and Robinson Crusoe. • Adds many new names including: Grace Hopper, Margaret Knight, Quanah Parker, Dr. Hector P. Garcia, Maya Lin, Maya Angelou, Sandra Cisneros, Kadir Nelson, Jean Pinkey, Angela Shelf Medear, Elisabet Ney, Carmen Lomas Garza, and Bill Martin. Fourth Grade • Removes the suggested selection of a children’s biography of Stephen F. Austin. High School • Removes John Locke’s Two Treatises of Government and English common law. • In the section on economics, changes the phrase “free enterprise system” to “capitalist system.” • In the section on science, technology, and society, removes the reference to the private sector as helping improve consumer products and only mentions government-assisted research. • In the section on science, technology, and society, replaces the phrase “analyze how policies fostering competition and entrepreneurship have resulted in scientific discoveries and technological innovations” with the “U.S. Constitution protects scientific discoveries and technological innovations.” “Dead White Guys” Far more troublesome for members of the board – and not just conservatives but moderates and liberals – was the tone of the working group’s meetings. Morrison testified that Presidents Eisenhower and Roosevelt were dismissed by the working group members as “dead white guys.” “They did this with the implication that we not have too many of those types retained, and certainly not more added,” he said. These recommendations are made by working group made up of volunteers. These are selected based on applications to the board and are generally supposed to include both educators and members of the public.http://www.texasinsider.org/?p=8341 more

Resolved Question: I need some help answering these U.S. History questions?

I always get them wrong whenever I answer them. I don't understand. Samuel Morse revolutionized communication in the nineteenth century by making the telephone practical. leading the group that developed the Internet. inventing the telegraph. developing wireless communication technology. using the railroad to deliver mail. What was the Wilmot Proviso? It was a stipulation that slavery be prohibited in any territory acquired in the negotiations with Mexico. It was a legislative amendment that said that the United States should acquire only Texas as a result of the Mexican-American War. It was a plea to apply the terms of the Missouri Compromise to any territory acquired from Mexico. It was a law that provided free Texas land to former slaves who were willing to relocate. It was a request to outlaw slavery in Texas if the United States won the Mexican-American War. John C. Calhoun believed that the federal government had no power to prohibit slavery in the Mexican Cession because no federal rules or regulations had ever addressed the issue of slavery in American territories. free states already had enough territory. slaves were property, and the Constitution protected the right to property. since slavery had been legal in the territory when it was Mexican, slavery should continue to be legal now. the resolution by Congressman David Wilmot had specifically settled the issue. In an attempt to lure American settlers to Texas in the 1820’s, Mexico promised to make Texas a Protestant state. provided generous land grants to recruiting agents. introduced a viable economic commodity in long-horn cattle. forced Native Americans to leave Texas for New Mexico. offered any settler $1,000 and 200 acres of land. The Battle of the Alamo is significant because it represented the last time that Mexico aggressively attacked the United States. provided a rallying point for Texans in their struggles against Mexico. was a decisive victory by Texas against the Mexican army. forced Mexico to grant Texas its independence. None of the above. more

Voting Question: Is Mexico reconquering the south west without firing a single shot?

It looks like Mexicans are very close to declaring independence if things don't go their way. A few years ago we saw how every person who protested on a immigration was mainly Latino and were being supported by a few Americans the mass of Latinos that walked the city was so great that raids started being made more often. And now we know that we have more than 40 million Latinos in the U.S and soon will be majority. It feels like Mexico has a plan to let half of its people enter the U.S and then use them to help them reconquer the U.S. Just like Mexico allowed Americans to enter Texas and they declared their independence from Mexico. Is the story repeating itself? Is Mexico reconquering the south west without firing a single shot? more

Resolved Question: Democrats- I found this posted by a friend in Facebook, what do you think?

I'm not going to post my opinion but here is what was posted: TO BE A DEMOCRAT, you have to believe that: 1. The AIDS virus is spread by a lack of funding. 2. Trial lawyers are selfless heroes and that doctors are overpaid. 3. Global temperatures are affected more by a suburban soccer mom driving an SUV than by documented, cyclical variations in the brightness and intensity of the sun. 4. Guns in the hands of law-abiding Americans are more of a threat than nuclear, chemical and biological weapons in the hands of Iran. 5. Businesses create oppression and government creates prosperity. 6. Self-esteem is more important than doing anything to earn it. 7. There was no art before federal funding. 8. The NRA is a bad organization because it stands up for certain parts of the Constitution, but the ACLU is a good organization because it stands up for certain parts of the Constitution. 9. Taxes are too low but ATM fees are too high. 10. Standardized tests are racist, but racial quotas are not. 11. ANY change in the weather is proof of Global Warming. 12. National wealth is determined by what we consume, not by what we produce. 13. The only wars in which America should become involved are those in which our national security is not at risk. 14. Perjury and obstruction of justice are impeachable if a Republican president commits them but a harmless, private matter if a Democratic president commits them. 15. America can have a strong military without spending money on it. 16. The way to improve public schools is to give more money and power to the very people who have misused that power and money to destroy the public schools. 17. Hunters and fishermen do not care about the environment but pasty-faced activists that rarely venture out-of-doors do. 18. A bureaucrat living in Washington DC can make better decisions about how to spend the money that you earn than you can. 19. Being a movie or television star qualifies you to speak out on public policy. 20. Hillary Clinton is a wonderful example for young women of feminine independence even though she has never accomplished anything worthwhile without riding on the coattails of her husband. 21. A handful of religious wackos living in rural Texas are more of a threat to public safety than Islamic terrorists who wish to plant bombs in major American cities. 22. Passing new laws are a much better way to curb crime than enforcing the existing ones. 23. Tax cuts are for people who don't actually pay income taxes. *** AND IN CLOSING: Remember, more Americans died today from surgical errors at the hands of doctors in hospital ORs than by handgun violence.Just trying to stir up debateArRo- you think I'm rich!? the only money I get is welfare.. more

Voting Question: Which delayed the admission of Texas into the Union?

a. the capture of santa anna at the san jacinto river b. british and french recognizing texas' independence Depending on how you look at this question, I think it could go either way. At first I thought it was A. because the Mexican war for independence took up time and that would delay annexation of Texas, but after the capture it took nine years to complete the deal. Then when you think about the British and French getting involved, that could also be the answer if you think about how their recognizing Texas as free caused controversy about whether the U.S. Pres. should push the annexation through Congress or not. Let me know whatever you think, any ideas or lines of thinking would help a lot! :)the other answers are: c. the possibility of a war with mexico d. sectional differences The question is actually which did not delay annexation, but i ruled out c and d so i just rephrased the question. more

Voting Question: need help with social studies project?

well for history I have a project where I have to make a political cartoon about how when the Mexican government back in the mid to early 1800's I think let American settlers in for cheap land, etc and settlers started to come in, then after awhile they stopped letting people in and the number of settlers who started to gather against this grew and eventually this sparked the texas war for independence, well my idea was having the border of texas be a door and settlers would be allowed in, then the second picture is a mexican who is allowing them in closes the door, then the last scene would be all the settlers jammed at the door shooting through it and trying t break it oen this representing the tension between them sparking a war. Well if anyone has any ideas Id appreciate if you share them with me or if there already is one I'd appreciate that also more

Resolved Question: How many of you have read the constitution and how many actually understand it fully?

A user asked a very good question on this yesterday which was deleted. The question was respectful, so I thought I'd ask it in his stead. Is reading the Constitution enough to actually have a deep understanding of it? I live in Central Texas-right at the heart of Bush Country. Libertarians are everywhere down here-and I'd say that over 70% of the people I know would count themselves as such. So I did a little test-How many of them had read the Constitution? I asked this question to 20 people at work whom are the most politically involved. These are average, hard working middle class Americans-the meat and bones of the Libertarian Movement. 11 claimed to have read the Constitution. When I tested them by quoting from the Deceleration of Independence, 8 of them went along with it and thought I was quoting from the Constitution. this means that only 3 out of 20 passed the test. Now, even if I assume that they read it years ago and their memory was hazy-that too is a problem and at best means that 8 people have a hazy idea about what they claim to have so much belief in. So only 3 out of 20 people-15%-had read and remembered the Constitution. Oh, and yes-these are the same group of people that call Obama Socialist too-I work with them and they always talk about how he's trying to destroy this country. I asked another question too- 17 out of 20 said they watch Glenn Beck. To be fair, I tested them and didn't go with the initial question. I repeated a quote from Limbaugh and only 3 thought it was from Beck. So 14 out of 20 seemed to watch Glenn Beck and claim this. So now I ask you-how many of YOU have read and actually understand the Constitution-or did you claim to have done so only because it's the politically popular thing to do now? I readily admit that I do not understand it as much as some people-but I can admit that my studies lie in other fields like Psychology, Sociology and Military Strategy. But I've read it and can admit that it's not so cut and dried as many think it is-there are still debates raging about what it means at many points-that's why we have the field of Constitutional law. I have no way to test you of course-because we are online and many who would have failed will just Google it. Nevertheless, how many of you have read the constitution AND how many actually understand it fully?I ran into this problem in another field, too. The Art of War by Sun Tzu-a lot of people have read it. But few understand it. It has simple wording, too. But out of people who have read it, only about 5% understand how it applies to life and war. I have 19 versions of that book alone, and I have cross analyzed them and even written two of my own versions-one based on applications to Martial arts, the other to management. When I debate someone in military strategy, I usually crush them because they've only read and not understood the work. So too, with the Constitution. Reading it is not enough. There are many issues with it that are unresolved and are still debated-as with the Art of War-with multiple translations and versions conflicting one another.CONSERVATIVE TSUNAMI-What evidence do you have that someone will be arrested for this?Bev- "There is of course a link to proof of all you say, right? How do we know you have read and or understand it. This is YOUR story and of course, no proof." How can I post a link to what was never online? I told you I asked this question at work-did you not read this? Yes, I understand why you would doubt my question, but you automatically assume it's a lie because YOU don't want to believe it, not because of the link. If I provided a link, you know you'd just question that too, so don't play that game with me.Bev- Also, I said (again, if you've read my question) that my understanding was not up to what an experts would be. And yes, I can't prove I read it either-but neither can you, and if you notice, I addressed that in my question, too.Eartha-I have admitted that I could have done more under the Bush Administration. My age was no excuse, either. We here in America are kept distracted and confused while such a document is shredded right in front of us. It has more to do with a national bystander effect than any flaw individually, however. more

Resolved Question: Do you think the Federal Reserve should be audited AT LEAST once every 100 years or so?

The Federal Reserve is an independent central bank that controls how many dollar bills are printed and introduced into the economy. Ben Bernanke (current Federal Reserve chairman) has refused multiple times to disclose who the Federal Reserve secretly loaned $2 trillion too or what they accepted as collateral. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/19/fed-beaten-bill-to-audit_n_364546.html In an unprecedented defeat for the Federal Reserve, an amendment to audit the multi-trillion dollar institution was approved by the House Finance Committee with an overwhelming and bipartisan 43-26 vote on Thursday afternoon despite harried last-minute lobbying from top Fed officials and the surprise opposition of Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who had previously been a supporter. The measure, cosponsored by Reps. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Alan Grayson (D-Fla.), authorizes the Government Accountability Office to conduct a wide-ranging audit of the Fed's opaque deals with foreign central banks and major U.S. financial institutions. The Fed has never had a real audit in its history and little is known of what it does with the trillions of dollars at its disposal. The amendment expressly blocks Congress from interfering with the independence of monetary policy decision-making, but opponents of the measure said that the political pressure would inevitably follow. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aatlky_cH.tY The Federal Reserve is refusing to identify the recipients of almost $2 trillion of emergency loans from American taxpayers or the troubled assets the central bank is accepting as collateral. Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said in September they would comply with congressional demands for transparency in a $700 billion bailout of the banking system. Two months later, as the Fed lends far more than that in separate rescue programs that didn't require approval by Congress, Americans have no idea where their money is going or what securities the banks are pledging in return. The Federal Reserve was signed into law by Woodrow Wilson in 1913.el................Yes, that's a very good point.matt a...........You're attempt at being clever failed. Obama is still the president. Geithner is still the Treasury Secretary. There is PLENTY to talk about.mark..............thanx for the link!! more

Voting Question: California Vs. Texas during the Civil War confrontation.?

I have read that California and Texas duked it out during the civil war. CA decision to help the union was a hard blow to Texas and other Confederate States. Texas and California faught each other with Texas suffering defeat from the Californian companies. Colonel Carlton pushed his Californians towards N.M and Texas and then had them stationed there until victory. There are reports that The US had Californian troops until 1965 in nearby areas near Texas and N.M to contain any Southern Threats. If the Deep South ever plans to claim Independence will the Gov use California manpower to contain the South again?. more
