Cars of the 1930s The Automobile Industry resisted the depression and welcomed a new look for cars throughout the 1930s. The stock-market crash lead into the Great Depression, nonetheless the farming and middle-class families did not entirely give up on cars. Throughout history cars have been the nation’s symbol of security, comfort, and leisure. The “drop-frame” construction lowered the car’s center of gravity. The Ford 1932 V-8 significantly introduced the “drop-frame” appearance. Ford’s 1932 V-8 design brought the car’s height down from the high perch of early automobiles. It’s engine was moved over the front axels and the hood was expanded outward. Its sixty-five-horse power capacity gave the car strength. Many people including Clyde barrow favored this car, he said, “I have drove fords exclusively when I could get away with one. For sustained speed and freedom from trouble, the ford has got every other car skinned. Even if my business hasn’t been strictly legal it don’t hurt anything to tell you what a fine car you got in the V-8” He and Bonnie Parker had stolen a 1932 V-8 in Texas. The 1934 Chrysler and Desoto Airflow models cut the edge of engineering and aesthetic auto production. The first car to feature a unified body and chassis was the airflow. The car had sturdiness on the road and a roomier interior. Despite the public found it unattractive, Chrysler structured the advances learned from the airflow into its line of mid-priced sedans. Due to the great depression, the production of all vehicles fell 36 percent in 1930. It then fell 29 more percent in 1931. In 1932, it fell to about 1,300,000 vehicles, the lowest ever since World War one. GM’s Alfred P. Sloan had a strategy called “constant upgrading of product” or planned obsolescence, which meant encouraging consumers to trade up and blanketing the market with a car at the top of every price range. Later “constant upgrading of product” was called sloanism and moved GM to the top. Sloanism emphasized trade-ins and styling. The styling department at GM made cars appear lower and longer. The 1932 Cadillac was the first car to eliminate the separate box-like trunk. By the end of the 1930s US Auto manufactures had established a unified structure, lower, wider passenger compartments that went throughout and up to the 1950s. Aerodynamic styling, or streamlining, meant modeling their new cars on the design principles of high-speed trains and airplanes. This resulted in better speed and fuel economy, made the ride smoother, lessened wind noise and car’s drag. The once-separate body and chassis merged into a unified body. Independent automakers failed throughout the depression years due to the low sales. Car companies that ceased to build were Kissel, Ruxton, Mood, Dobel, Jordan, Stearns, Gardener, Marmon, Peerless, Du Pont, and more. Not all went down; five companies survived Charles Nash, Hudson, Packard, Studebaker, and Willy-Overland. The number of U.S. Automakers dropped drastically from 108 in 1923 to 44 by 1927. The big three were Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler. Large Automakers lowered their prices on their cars to stay in business. In 1930, it was recorded that sales in the auto industry had dropped 2 million from 5 million, just in the previous year. The depression affected the countries entire economy. The big three got a bigger share of the market from the fall of the independent automobile companies. Their share increased from 75 to 90, over the time period since the 1920s. Due to the plant closings, jobless workers, and low production the United Automobile Workers (UAW) Union was founded in Detroit, in 1935. The depression led many workers to strike and believe unionization was the only way to protect themselves from corruption of the companies. In 1935, congress passed the National labor Relations Act (NLRA), which outlawed the heavy-handed measures the companies had been using to break up unions. General Motors spent close to one million from 1934 up to 1936, the reason was for guards to patrol its plants. On May 26th, 1937, UAW leader attempted to hand out flyers at the main gate. They were stopped and trapped, who were beaten along with women, reporters, and photographers. The event became known as “Battle of the overpass.” To close down many plants, the UAW used the sit-down strike. This in effect did stop labor. By 1937, the UAW succeeded against GM and Chrysler. Ford continued to stop unionization. Ford Workers walked out on April 1st of 1941 causing the River Rouge Plant to close. In 1936, strikes by workers led to improved working conditions and wages. moreOpen Question: Concealed Handgun License in Texas/South Dakota?
The minimum age to obtain a concealed handgun license in the state of Texas is 21. The minimum age to obtain a concealed handgun license in the state of South Dakota is 18. Does reciprocity between Texas and South Dakota permit citizens with a C.H.L. from South Dakota to carry a concealed handgun in Texas if he or she is 18? According to the Texas Department of Public Safety: "September 6, 2005 South Dakota Note: Effective immediately, Governor Perry has issued a proclamation that allows persons with concealed handgun licenses from South Dakota to legally carry in Texas. South Dakota residents will be required to follow Texas law while carrying in this state. This has the effect of reciprocity between Texas and South Dakota since South Dakota law recognizes valid licenses issued from other states including Texas." Feds charge record number of immigration crimes By Howard Mintz hmintz@mercurynews.com Posted: 01/04/2010 12:01:00 AM PST As Israel Gonzalez-Reyes recently stood before a San Jose judge for sentencing, his case had all the ingredients of the most common crime in the nation's federal courts over the past year. The 39-year-old defendant had been deported to his native Mexico on eight separate occasions, repeatedly returning to the United States before winding up in jail, usually charged with a variety of state crimes ranging from burglary to drunken driving. Federal prosecutors had had enough — this time around, Gonzalez-Reyes was charged under criminal immigration laws forbidding the illegal re-entry of a deported alien back into the United States. More than ever, federal prosecutors are using such felony charges and the threat of serious federal prison time to make lawbreakers think twice before making another trip across the border. In 2009, the U.S. Justice Department filed nearly 92,000 immigration-related criminal cases in the federal courts. The record-breaking trend accounted for more than half of all new federal prosecutions in the country, according to Justice Department data maintained at Syracuse University. As of October, the latest figures available, federal prosecutors had filed nearly 300 such cases in the Northern California federal courts, which include San Jose. Syracuse researchers projected that figure would reach nearly 400 by the end of the year, more than double the number filed in 2005. The Bay Area federal courts ranked 10th out of the country's 93 districts in such filings. Spurred by the relentless surge of illegal immigration in border states such as Texas and Arizona, where immigration prosecutions total in the thousands, the federal government has concluded that simple deportation is no longer an adequate response to repeat offenders with criminal records. Experts attribute the steady rise in prosecutions to several factors, including an increase in immigration and border patrol agents during the Bush administration, and greater emphasis on prosecuting cases that are often easy to prove. There is ample doubt that criminal enforcement can put much of a dent in the nation's illegal immigration problems. And critics worry that many routine immigration matters are being transformed into federal felony charges with increasingly lengthy sentences. There is also concern about a disproportionate impact on Mexican nationals. A Mercury News review of 52 immigration cases filed in the San Jose federal courts between January and October found every defendant was from Mexico. "It's riding and walking while Hispanic," said Barry Portman, the Bay Area's federal public defender, whose office typically represents immigrants too poor to pay for their own lawyers. Supporters of the tougher enforcement approach say the prosecutions are needed to target illegal immigrants with criminal backgrounds who keep re-entering the country. Indeed, the review of the San Jose cases shows these defendants are often unsympathetic. They have typically been deported numerous times, and they carry rap sheets that run the gamut from drug and robbery charges to domestic violence. In some instances, they have even been prosecuted before in federal court, serving time for immigration crimes before being deported, only to return to the United States. One San Jose defendant charged this year, Esequiel Sandoval-Ramos, has been deported eight times and was convicted four separate times in San Diego federal court on illegal re-entry charges before his most recent arrest here, court records show. Prosecutors say they must deter illegal immigration by those with criminal records, which is driving up the numbers. "Does it always work? Of course not," said Brian Stretch, chief of the criminal division for the Bay Area U.S. attorney's office. "But it's important to keep trying." Advocates for tighter immigration enforcement say such prosecutions are overdue, but they caution criminal charges are only part of dealing with the sprawling immigration issue. "We need to have these prosecutions, but they are not the silver bullet," said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates stricter measures such as curtailing the ability of illegal immigrants to secure jobs here. For defendants such as Gonzalez-Reyes, the aggressive prosecutions mean a long prison stay before deportation. In October, a defense lawyer argued that Gonzalez-Reyes' sentence should only be about a year because he had returned to the U.S. this time to earn money for a prosthetic for a child who'd just lost a leg in an accident. But Gonzalez-Reyes' record was too disturbing for U.S. District Judge James Ware, who sentenced the defendant to 37 months in prison. The question now, as with the tens of thousands of cases being prosecuted in the federal courts, is whether the system will see him again. Why has child molestation committed by illegal aliens become an epidemic? • October 15, 2009 Contrary to what President Bush often claimed, family values do stop at the Rio Grande for many illegal aliens. In addition to suppressing wages, bankrupting our hospitals, and over-crowding our jails and public schools, illegal aliens are preying upon our children. Source : EXAMINER.COM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Gibson April 21, 2009 Contrary to what President Bush often claimed, family values do stop at the Rio Grande for many illegal aliens. In addition to suppressing wages, bankrupting our hospitals, and over-crowding our jails and public schools, illegal aliens are preying upon our children In Operation Predator sweeps across the country conducted between 2003-2007, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents nabbed over 10,700 foreign national child molesters. Many of these predators had been previously convicted of other crimes, and many had already been deported once. The number predators apprehended in the sweeps actually only represent the tip of the iceberg. In fact, a study conducted by the Violent Crimes Institute reports that between 1999 and 2006, there were nearly 1,000,000 sex crimes committed in the United States by illegal aliens. Using U.S. Department of Justice, Immigration, as well as state and local law enforcement data, Deborah Schurman-Kauflin of the Violent Crimes Institute determined that there are no less than 240,000 illegal alien sex offenders currently inside the U.S. A very cursory search on the subject of illegal aliens committing acts of child molestation turned up countless examples of the growing problem. The following are two recent ones: On April 17, 2009, Judge Cecil Puryear in Lubbock, TX, sentenced illegal alien and Mexican national Julian Vasquez to 15 years in prison for a July 2008 incident in which Vasquez broke into an apartment and sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl. Vasquez broke forced his way into the dwelling located in Cora Apartments, and shoved the girl onto the bed, tore off her shirt and bra, and fondled her breasts, according to court documents. The girl was able to fight off Vasquez and ran into the bathroom, where she was able to call 911. When officers arrived, they found Vasquez still trying to open the bathroom door. The only defense offered by Vasquez’s attorney, Jesse Mendez, was that his client was drunk when he committed the frightening assault. Lubbock County prosecutor Jennifer Basset told reporters: “This is an appropriate sentence for a stranger who broke into a house to molest a child. And this is a case where the effects on this child will not be forgotten by her, and this is a serious crime in Lubbock County.” On April 14, 2009, illegal alien and Salvadoran national Isaac Mendez Ramirez, 24 was arrested in Largo, FL and charged with two counts of capital sexual battery. Ramirez is accused of molesting a 7-year-old girl in November 2008 and again in January 2009. According to the arrest report, Ramirez lives with the little girl but is not related to her. He is being held in the Pinellas County Jail. In 2007, Americans For Legal Immigration Political Action Committee (ALIPAC) tracked child sexual assaults committed by illegal aliens. In a 30 day period, they recorded 27 assaults by foreign nationals illegally inside the United States. The results are as follows: July 28, 2007 Milwaukee, Oregon Charged: Alejandro Emetrio “Alex” Rivera Gamboa, 24, and Gilberto Javier Arellano-Gamboa, 23 Charges: rape and murder Victim: Dani Countryman of Texas (15 years old) August 6, 2007 Trenton, N.J. Charged: Jose Carranza, 28 Charges: child rape (later charged with murder of Newark teenagers as well) Victim: child’s name withheld August 16, 2007 Huron, Ohio Charged: Lucio Sanchez-Martinez Charge: gross sexual imposition of a minor Victim: 8 year old girl August 20, 2007 Oregon City, Oregon Charged: Alejandro Hernandez-Flores, 19 and Mario Alberto Flores-Estrada, 20 Charges: rape, sodomy, and sexual abuse Victims: two girls ages 14 and 15 August 21, 2007 Franklin County, Alabama Charged: Alvaro Vargas, 38 Charge: rape, sexual abuse Victim: 11 year old girl August 23, 2007 Bryan County, Oklahoma Sought/Charged: Jose Retana Charge: rape by instrumentation Victim: 4 year old girl August 24, 2007 Indianapolis, Indiana Charged: Jesus Valenzuela, 19 Charges: child molestation and burglary Victim: 5 year old girl August 27, 2007 McAllen, Texas Charged: Jorge Alberto Escobar Charge: aggravated kidnapping Victim: 5 year old girl August 27, 2007 Rockville, Maryland Sought/Charged: Mahumbo Kanneh, 23 Charges: rape, sexual assault, and molestation (Dismissed due to lack of interpreter!) Plain and Simple. Look at the facts!?
The truth is, that some of the fault is on each man, and their managers. But, anaylize these facts, and honestly tell me that it isn't MOSTLY Mayweather's fault. See,...the thing that ticks me off, and a LOT of boxing fans is that Mayweather seems to always find a way to dodge a tough fight. He protects that record of his AT ALL COSTS. And, over the years he has developed a reputation as a fight dodger. On the flip side, a lot of Pac-man fans, find NO FAULT in their boy, because Pacquiao has never dodged, or tried to wiggle out of tough fights. Pacquiao has built a reputation as a guy who meets every difficult challenge head on at full speed ahead. So,... when the fight fell through the crapper, its very easy to point fingers at Mayweather seeing as how he has a long track record pattern of doing stuff like this. There is a lot of other stuff too,... and, it does paint a funky picture, and, again it points the finger at mayweather. For example, isn't it weird that way back in 2005 manny Pacquaio went public and, voiced his opinion that he believed the reason he lost to Erick Morales was because of having blood drawn close to the fight, and that he believed it weakend him. Even though, it was probably a psychological problem, and likely not a medical one,... Although the point is that it was real to Pacquiao. Now that went public in 2005, and everyone knew that Pacquiao felt that way,....however, superstitious it may be, that is how the guy feels. So,...isn't it convienent that Mayweather who has NEVER had an issue with the efficiency of The Nevada State Comission with respect to the way they conduct testing for PED's. Now suddenly, he wants to change the rules, and have blood drawn close to the fight??? He would certainly have known that manny was superstitious about that, and that it would be the perfect escape plan to get out of the fight. And, not look like a coward. Now basically, Mayweather's whole entire defence is that he asserts that Pacquiao is using PED's What makes that so funny, is that Mayweather would absolutley NOT agree to a fight in Texas, or anywhere outside of Nevada,...Why??? Well, I will tell you why,...Floyd Mayweather is using a PED!!! Did you get that??? Floyd mayweather is using a Preformance Enhancing Drug!!! It is a drug called XYLOCAINE, and its illegal in Texas, and pretty much EVERYWHERE,...everywhere EXCEPT Nevada. Mind you that Nevada allows pretty much EVERYTHING including prostitution and gambling. So its NO WONDER why Floyd wouln't fight in Texas! So, Floyd gets out of a fight by using Pacquaio's well known superstition against him, and then accuses Manny of taking PED's, while he stays up in Nevada using PED's??? Ummn,... that seems kinda weird don't you think??? Additionally, when Pacquiao and Mayweather were having their talks, trying to save the fight. it was later reported that Manny had been bending over backwards to try and make the fight happen. Including agreeing to let the fight be billed as Mayweather-Pacquiao instead of Pacquiao-Mayweather. Mayweather never bent at all, everything had to be his way, he wouldn't agree to any of Pacquiao's requests, so at some point Pacquiao just get feed up with the guy, can you really blame him??? Mayweather was deliberatly sabotaging the fight! Also, just to clear manny's name, Manny agreed to three blood tests, unlimited urine tests, and to another blood test immediately after the fight. If Manny was on the JUICE he certainly would not agree to all that. Especially because after a fight, due to dehydration the "JUICE" if there was any would be concentrated in his blood system, and therefore much easier to find. The simple fact is that Manny isn't on any PED's Mayweather knows that, what he wants is to get out of the fight, and save his precious record, to do that, he knew that all he has to do is demand blood tests right before the fight, and it worked. moreVoting Question: What is your opinion on the article?
When talk of race goes behind closed doors (CNN) -- We're just going to put it out there: Behind closed doors, whites talk differently about blacks. At least that's what two sociologists found after conducting a study of college students across the country. One of the researchers, Joe Feagin, said that's why it comes as no surprise to him that a powerful politician such as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid would talk about Barack Obama's skin color and use the term "Negro dialect" in what he considered a private conversation. Speaking not of Reid but of his conclusions drawn from his research, Feagin said, "Most whites have sharply reduced the blatantly racist stuff they do in public, while they still do huge amounts in private." "It's just social correctness in the front stage. The scale of this is gigantic on the backstage, which is why the notion of a post-racial America is laughable," said Feagin, a professor at Texas A&M University. "And I think most whites know it because they've been to Thanksgiving dinner with Uncle Jim and have heard the n-word jokes." Feagin and Leslie Picca of the University of Dayton compiled their research in a book called "Two-Faced Racism" published in 2007. They surveyed 626 white students at 28 colleges and universities across the country. They asked the students to keep diaries and record any racial events they came across during the course of a day. The students recorded 9,000 accounts, of which 7,500 were "blatantly racist" events ranging from private jokes and conversations to violent incidents, Feagin said. About 100 accounts stood up against racism, he said. The majority of racial events were directed at African-Americans, but Latinos and Asians also came under attack. Feagin and Picca also surveyed African-American students, but that research is still being compiled. "In these 7,500 blatant accounts, most of them are accounts of what we call backstage racism -- that is they're doing these performances and skits with friends and relatives," Feagin said. Does it surprise him that someone with such political clout as Reid would use a term such as "Negro dialect"? "No," Feagin said, "not after looking at our student diaries." He said Reid "felt safe making" the comment about Obama because he was in a private setting. "It's a great teaching moment," Feagin said. "It shows the difference between the front stage and the backstage. He thought he was saying that in the backstage, and now it's been brought out in the public for all to see and discuss." The controversy is centered on remarks published in the book "Game Change" by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann. The book cites Reid as saying privately in 2008 that Obama could succeed as a black candidate partly because of his "light-skinned" appearance and speaking patterns "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." Reid, D-Nevada, apologized to the president after excerpts from the book were released, and Obama said he considered the issue closed. Your take: iReporters sound off on the issue "This is a good man who's always been on the right side of history," Obama said Monday in a sit-down interview with CNN political contributor Roland Martin. "For him to have used some inartful language in trying to praise me, and for people to try to make hay out of that, makes absolutely no sense." Reid has received the support of the Congressional Black Caucus. On Monday, he said numerous prominent African-American officials, including NAACP Chairman Julian Bond and Attorney General Eric Holder, called to offer their support. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, head of the GOP's Senate campaign arm, has called for Reid to give up his leadership post after the "embarrassing and racially insensitive" remarks. Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele also called for Reid to step down. Duke University political science professor Kerry Haynie said he doesn't dispute that attitudes toward race may be viewed differently in private than in public. But he said he doesn't feel that came into play with Reid's remarks. "Many of us who work in areas of race and politics asked these same kinds of questions, about whether Obama is different for whites than other black politicians," Haynie said. "I don't think Sen. Reid was expressing sentiments he would not have expressed publicly." Boyce Watkins, an associate professor at Syracuse University, said the country shouldn't let this moment pass. "The takeaway is that there is a teachable moment, but we can't allow politicians to do all the teaching," Watkins told CNN's "American Morning." "If you watched President Obama's interview with Roland Martin, the conversation tends to be let's sweep this under the rug and throw the baby out with the bath water and move on. "But the truth is that they are trying to get health care passed, and that's good, I respect that, but I want to have the conversation on race. moreResolved Question: How do I stop crying everyday and try to be happy with the my life situation?!?!?!?
My life went COMPLETELY upside down in a matter of weeks. I had everything: AMAZING friends, the sweetest boyfriend ever, a wonderful home, my High School that I now see is so AMAZING compared to the high school i now attend. Let me tell you a little about myself and how my life got so bad and how there is so much sadness and anger in my heart now. I'm sorry its so long but I need your help PLEASE!!! I have 4 brothers and 4 sisters, i'm the 3rd youngest and am 17 years old. We lived in a fairly large house in Michigan all of our lives and I was fortunate enough to attend a great public school. I had really good grades and was lucky enough to be apart of a great xc and track team where I set many school records and was a state runner. Running was always my passion, My goal is to go to a D1 college on a running scholarship. My life was practially perfect exept for the fact that my family at home had a lot of problems, my father left us, my mother doesn't work or speak english and treats my brothers much better then us girls, my brothers don't pay rent because they made bad choices in there lives so they don't have a steady income but every time they do have money they buy whatever they want but still lived in our house in Michigan. My older sister was the only one who had a good high paying job and paid rent, but she got so fed up with my mom treating the boys better then her even though she was the one who worked 10 hours everyday 7 days a week. And my other sisters had jobs but they were in their college years so they couldn't pay rent. My older sister and mom fought a lot. And whenever my older sister and brother fought, my mom would take my brother's side. So my sister told us to move out. The only one who would take us in was my oldest brother but he was living in Texas. He didn't have a steady job though, so all 5 of us live in a 2 bedroom apartment. I was so against moving to Texas because i was in the beginning of my track season and was the #1 runner on the xc team and so everyone thought I had a big shot at state and also I knew I was going to miss my friends so much. I kept asking to stay but my older sister wouldn't let me. My 2nd older sister and her husband moved with us because they were looking for jobs, so I kinda felt a little better because I thought that would make the financial situation much better. We moved here thinking that my brother already found a apartment, but he lied and so we spent a week looking. During that week everyone was really mad and lots of fights occur ed. My sister was really mad at my brother with all his lies so she and her husband went back to michigan. There marriage is falling apart. So my brother in law is now in California working with his uncle and being treated for Depression and my sister is 6000 in dept. Everyone is starting to hate my brother, my mom loves him though of course. I'm here with all this pressure of helping my mom and younger brother and sister. My school here in Houston is really different in a bad way compared to my school in Michigan. And the sad part is this school was the one that the registration process took so long since i am a Transfer student because the other school sucks even worse. The track team and coaches sucks too. So it's going to have to be an individual effort this season. I'm gonna need to do really good at meets, but with all this family stress as well as financial situation it's so hard!!! How do I stay positive when literally my days just get worse and worse. The thing that makes me so angry is the fact that we can go back if my mom apologizes to my older sister and asks her if we can come back. But my family is so fucked up that all the grown ups would rather hold to pride then be happy. I'm usually a strong person but I've broken down because I can't take it here anymore, my life is falling apart and getting worse evryday. I'm sorry it's so long i'm not here to make you sad or feel sorry for me, I just want on some advice on what to do, I'm trying to have hope for my future but it's so hard because my days seem to get worse and worse. I'm trying to hold on and be positive but it's so hard. Do you think it will get better?!?!?! moreResolved Question: hey everyone I have a question please answer?

Okay, so my cousin- a quiet, shy girl that mostly keeps to herself- goes to a Lutheran school where you have to pay tuition and everything (basically, a private school). Well, we both live in Houston, Texas, so there's a mix of ALL races in every school private or public. So, today, my cousin was going to her classes with her friends and an an african american girl comes up to her. My cousin is white and in no way racist at all, but I'm pretty sure she didn't know the girl and she's not the one to pick a fight. Well, the other girl pushes my cousin and naturally, my cousin pushes back. Well, the african american girl hits my cousin in the mouth, and starts attacking my cousin. The african american girl came out without any scratches or bruises, but my cousin had scratches all over her neck and a busted lip from where the other girl hit her. They gave my cousin 3 days of in school suspension for only pushing the girl. Is this fair? Now, I don't know what happen to the other girl (hopefully she got suspended), but I don't think it's very fair to my cousin. This is going on her permanent record (she's in 10th grade) and i'm pretty sure a good college won't want someone who was involved in a fight. So, like I asked, is this fair? My aunt is pressing charges against the girl, but I still don't think they should have gave my cousin in school suspension. In our side of Houston, they do pick random people and try to fight them. moreResolved Question: What should I do if my family wants me to live at home and attend college?
I am a senior in high school and its that time of the year to start applying to colleges. My parents don't really want me to leave school because they think the world is too cruel and unforgiving and that I should live all 4 years at home with them..... Um, what?? I have made good grades all throughout high school and I definitely did not work my butt off to go to my local community college and then transfer to some local public university to get a degree. However, I don't want to waste a fortune, er, I mean make my parents pay a fortune. So, I want to go to a college in Texas but, in order to make my parents somewhat content, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area would be a plus. I have heard of the following reputable colleges in the DFW area: --SMU --TCU --University of Texas at Arlington --University of Texas at Dallas --UNT Are there any other colleges in Texas that are recognized for their academics as well as their social experience? I plan on majoring in the science for sure but I might specialize in engineering; I'm not a liberal arts type of person AT ALL! Also, do you think I have a chance at Rice University in Houston, TX? This would be my dream school. Here is my academic record as of now: 3.6 GPA (unweighted) Top 25% of my class (very competitive) Received 3's thru 5's on AP tests Taken all honors and AP throughout high school I'm involved in numerous clubs like Key Club and National Honor Society to name a few I participated in Cross Country competitively Hispanic and come from a very poor family (combined family income below $30,000 a year) 23 on my ACT and 1120 on my SAT (only Critical Reading and Math) Oh, should I retest? I've won numerous awards in high school as well Please give me your input you guys and please comment on whether you think I have a shot at Rice U. based on my record above. moreResolved Question: How often must Security checks in Texas Jails be Conducted?

Didn't actvists also say better?
Why is the first think activists say is ICE audit is tearing families part. Didn't activists also say better illegal immigration be left up to the feds and when the feds do it,the activists start in on audits are tearing families part and the feds must not enforce immigration matters ? EL PASO -- At least 41 businesses in El Paso will be part of a national audit of 1,000 businesses by federal officials looking for immigration violations in hiring workers. The audit will be among the biggest in El Paso by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a move that drew immediate criticism from a local immigrant-rights group. The local businesses chosen for audits were not named, but the agency said on its Web site that all the businesses selected for inspection were the "result of investigative leads and intelligence É and connection to public safety and national security." The Border Network for Human Rights, based in El Paso, opposed the audits. "We are saddened and disappointed that two years after the disastrous 2007 immigration raids that tore apart families and penalized American businesses, the federal government is once again adopting a shortsighted enforcement-only approach to immigration policy," the group said in a prepared statement. The group also said the federal government should concentrate its efforts on fighting crimes along the border such as drug trafficking and gang activity instead of "harassing hardworking families and business owners." Of the 1,000 businesses nationwide, 161 are in Texas. In addition to the ones in El Paso, there are about 60 in the San Antonio area and 40 in the Houston area. When the audits will take place and how they will be conducted has not been announced. "ICE is focused on finding and penalizing employers who believe they can unfairly get ahead by cultivating illegal workplaces," ICE Assistant Secretary John Morton said on the agency's Web site. According to The Associated Press, dairy farmers in Vermont were among the businesses getting notifications from immigration officials to turn over payroll and hiring records, said Kelly Loftus, spokeswoman for the Vermont Agency of Agriculture. Some dairy farmers say they use foreign workers because it is hard to find people locally for the work. Richard Dayoub, president and CEO of the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce, said, "They (ICE) are really taking an effort by their part to understand the depth of the problem. I'm not sure what they will accomplish." At the same time, the Homeland Security Department announced it would give a seal of approval to businesses volunteering to use an electronic program to check workers' immigration status. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Thursday that the public should know which companies are following the law. The problem is that the program known as E-Verify is still under development, and the law does not require employers to use it. They are required to use a paper system. E-Verify is an Internet- based system that allows employers to voluntarily determine the eligibility of new hires to work in the United States, using information provided on the employee's I-9 form. The E-Verify campaign is being promoted by ICE as a way to help employers maintain a legal work environment. "All employers have an obligation to assure that they have a work force that complies with the law," El Paso Mayor John Cook said. "They E-Verify system will implement technology to assist employers with that responsibility." Cindy Ramos-Davidson, CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said she felt that the E-Verify system was not up to speed, and that all it took was one small error to set up a business for litigation. The last nationwide audit conducted by ICE resulted in 14,000 suspicious documents. The Border Network for Human Rights said in its statement that it "hopes that the Obama administration will rethink this outdated strategy and keep his campaign promise to implement comprehensive immigration reform." http://www.elpasotimes.com/ci_13837362?source=most_emailed Why do activists feel illegals should not be held to any standard in the work place and ICE should not bother illegals even when they use document , stolen documents as such documents enable illegal to have a better life and current laws are unjust. People feel its ok to break laws without any punishment since what they are doing is offering them a better life ? Is this how activists believe our immigration laws must be directed ?Why is the first thing activists say ICE audits are tearing families apart. moreResolved Question: How come the Feds Help Criminal Aliens Escape Justice In Texas?
More than 1,000 illegal immigrants awaiting trial for serious crimes in one major U.S. county were instead deported by federal immigration authorities and freed in their home countries. The released offenders include at least 128 murderers, more than 400 child rapists and molesters, some 300 charged with aggravated assault and dozens more accused of sexual assault, aggravated robbery, kidnapping and other grave felonies. The offenders' newfound freedom came courtesy of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the federal agency that provided a one-way ticket home after bail was posted in their state criminal case. This sort of voluntary deportation to escape justice occurs nationwide, but this batch focuses on just one county in Texas. Dallas County prosecutors provided the data to a local newspaper, calling it a "wish list" of people they would have liked to see tried. Instead the illegal immigrant criminals got away after bonding out and getting transferred to immigration facilities where they agreed that returning home was better than going to prison in America. The 1,000 figure doesn't even include all the illegal immigrant criminals the feds helped get off in the nation's eighth-largest county, only the most serious, according to frustrated Dallas County officials. They assure defendants knowingly use the system as a means to avoid prosecution. The sad thing, of course, is that a federal agency is aiding and abetting them. It could be worse, however. The criminals could be released in the U.S., which ICE does regularly and attributes to resource shortages. Earlier this year a Houston newspaper obtained public records that revealed the agency has freed hundreds of illegal immigrants convicted of felonies-including homicide, sexual assault and weapons violations-in the last few years alone. In many cases ICE doesn't even know the whereabouts of the criminal aliens, who were released in various different states. moreVoting Question: Can i become a texas notary public if i have a dwi on my record?

http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/nov/11/rules-changed-after-paul-aide-detained-at-airport/?feat=home_headlines " An angry aide to Rep. Ron Paul, an iPhone and $4,700 in cash have forced the Transportation Security Administration to quietly issue two new rules telling its airport screeners they can only conduct searches related to airplane safety. In response, the American Civil Liberties Union is dropping its lawsuit on behalf of Steve Bierfeldt, the man who was detained in March and who recorded the confrontation on his iPhone as TSA and local police officers spent half an hour demanding answers as to why he was carrying the money through Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. The new rules, issuedin September and October, tell officers "screening may not be conducted to detect evidence of crimes unrelated to transportation security" and that large amounts of cash don't qualify as suspicious for purposes of safety. "We had been hearing of so many reports of TSA screeners engaging in wide-ranging fishing expeditions for illegal activities," said Ben Wizner, a staff lawyer for the ACLU, pointing to reports of officers scanning pill-bottle labels to see whether the passenger was the person who obtained the prescription as one example. He said screeners get a narrow exception to the Fourth Amendment, which prohibits unreasonable searches, strictly to keep weapons and explosives off planes, not to help police enforce other laws. TSA was created in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to boost screening at airports, but the young agency has repeatedly bumped heads against civil libertarians, who argue officers overstep their authority. TSA spokeswoman Lauren Gaches said the new "internal directives" are meant to ensure their screeners are consistent. She acknowledged the policy on large sums of cash had changed, but wouldn't provide a copy of either document. She said the directives would not be released unless a Freedom Of Information Act request was submitted by The Washington Times. "TSA routinely assesses its policies and screening procedures to ensure the highest levels of security nationwide," she said. "Currency alone is not a threat, and TSA does not restrict the amount of currency a traveler may carry through the checkpoint." TSA had earlier defended the search, though it had criticized officers' abusive behavior. The ACLU released the September directive because TSA included it in a public court filing, but said when TSA gave it the October directive it was instructed not to publish it. That second directive tells screeners that "traveling with large amounts of currency is not illegal," and that to the extent bulk quantities of cash warrant searching, it is only to further security objectives, the ACLU said. The ACLU sued in June on behalf of Mr. Bierfeldt, who was detained after he sent a metal box with $4,700 in cash and checks through an X-ray machine at the airport. He had the cash as part of his duties as director of development for the Campaign for Liberty, the offshoot group that Mr. Paul, Texas Republican, created from his failed presidential bid. Mr. Bierfeldt recorded audio of the confrontation on his iPhone, including threats, insults and repeated questions about where he obtained the money. "Are you from this planet?" one officer told him, while another accused him of acting like a child for asking what part of the law forced him to answer their questions about the money. "The TSA has stated that their policy is going to change, which is basically what we were after all along," Mr. Bierfeldt told The Washington Times. Some civil liberties activists speculate that TSA wants passengers to be uncertain about its procedures because it gives more power to the authorities in an encounter. The new directives don't affect a situation where a TSA officer, in the performance of a regular screening, comes across evidence of illegal activity, such as a bag of illicit drugs. What do you think?Testicles, they can't drag you aside just for having lots of money, their search has to be for safety of flight. moreResolved Question: How can I find my cousin's BIRTH RECORDS on line?

2. I am a citizen of the United States of America and a resident of the state of California. 3. I am an attorney and an officer of the court licensed in all courts of the state of California, Supreme Court of the United States, Federal District Court in the central District of the State of California and have practiced pro hac vice in the states of Texas, Pennsylvania and Georgia. 4. This declaration is made in response to the October 29th order in above captioned case. 5. During the October 5 hearing in the above mentioned case Judge David O. Carter stated that I encouraged my supporters to call him. 6. I declare under penalty of perjury that this is not true. 7. During the hearing I tried to protest this defamatory allegation against me and asked to speak. However, Judge Carter refused to let me speak and respond to this allegation. 8. In the same order on page 29, Judge Carter has stated that he received letters with affidavits, claiming that I asked potential witnesses to perjure themselves. 9. I declare that this is absolutely and categorically not true, and it constitutes an outrageous defamatory and slanderous accusation. Those letters were ex parte communications, highly prejudicial against me and my clients and I had no opportunity to respond and deny those accusations. 10. I believe that the court referred to the letters from Larry Sinclair and Lucas Smith. Both parties were contacted and asked to be witnesses during the motion hearing on September 8, 2009. 11. I have asked Larry Sinclair to authenticate an affidavit he submitted to the Chicago police regarding the homicide of Mr. Donald Young. In fact, the statements to which Mr. Sinclair would testify are already a matter of public record. 1. In the affidavit submitted to the Chicago Police and in his book, recently published, Mr. Sinclair stated that Mr. Donald Young contacted him repeatedly and told Mr. Sinclair that he had a lengthy homosexual relationship with Mr. Obama. 2. The affidavit further said that Mr. Young was found dead, shot in the back of his head at the onset of the Democratic primaries for 2008 presidential election. 3. Any allegation that I asked Mr. Sinclair to perjure himself is not only completely defamatory, but lacks any sense or reason, as Mr. Sinclair’s affidavit regarding Mr. Young’s homicide can be found filed with the Chicago police department and in his book, that can be purchased on the Internet. 12. I asked Mr. Lucas Smith to authenticate Kenyan birth certificate for Mr. Barack Hussein Obama, which he previously tried to sell to the highest bidder on E-bay. Again, any allegations that I asked Mr. Smith to perjure himself is absolutely not true, defamatory and ludicrous, as he made this information available to the public long before he ever met me. 13. As of now I am the only attorney with the courage, integrity and strength of character to not only bring forward information of Mr. Barack Obama not being eligible for the office of the presidency, but I am also to submit to court information from two licensed investigators, showing that Mr. Obama has used 39 different social security numbers according to national databases, including social security numbers of deceased individuals. 14.I am bringing forward evidence showing that Mr. Barack Hussein Obama, sitting president, is guilty of multiple felonies, for which he might need to spend the rest of his life in prison. 15. I believe, that I am being targeted in an effort to silence me, which involves targeting my law license in an attempt to try to prevent me from proceeding with legal actions on the above issues. I solemnly swear under penalty of perjury that all the facts stated and circumstances described above are true and correct statements. Planned Parenthood's abortion quotas exposed Ex-director: We'd have client goal every month Posted: November 04, 2009 10:05 pm Eastern Former Planned Parenthood director Abby Johnson with Coalition for Life Director Shawn Carney (photo: Coalition for Life) A former director of a Texas Planned Parenthood branch who resigned after she watched an ultrasound-guided abortion told that the clinic was pushing employees to strive for abortion quotas to boost profits. "There are definitely client goals," former clinic director Abby Johnson said. "We'd have a goal every month for abortion clients and for family planning clients." Johnson, 29, said the Bryan, Texas, Planned Parenthood clinic performed surgical abortions every other Saturday, but it began expanding access to abortion to increase earnings. "One of the ways they were able to up the number of patients that they saw was they started doing the RU-486 chemical abortions all throughout the week," she said. RU-486 chemical abortions kill the lining of the uterus, cutting off oxygen and nutrients, resulting in the death of an unborn baby. Johnson said the chemical abortion costs the same as an early first-trimester abortion: between $505 and $695 for each procedure. She told that the clinic was experiencing financial difficulties due to the economic downturn. "Abortion is the most lucrative part of Planned Parenthood's operations," she said. "Even though they're two separate corporations, all of the money goes into one pot. With the family planning corporation really suffering, they depend on the abortion corporation to balance their budget, help get them out of the hole and help make income for the company." She continued, "They really wanted to increase the number of abortions so that they could increase their income." Now Planned Parenthood has retaliated against Johnson, filing a restraining order against her because the clinic fears she may leak confidential information. The Brazos Valley Coalition for Life, a pro-life group that recently moved its headquarters several hundred feet away from the clinic, is named on the temporary restraining order as well. The injunction temporarily prevents her from releasing information until after a hearing scheduled for Nov. 10 in the 85th District Court. Planned Parenthood claimed in court documents that Johnson copied private personnel files and other documents before she quit her position Oct. 6. The abortion provider's lawyers expressed concern that Johnson would disclose client medical records, doctor information and clinic security procedures. The restraining order contends Planned Parenthood would be irreparably harmed by an information leak. However, Johnson said, "I don't have any confidential documents, so I'm not sharing anything because I don't have anything. I have no patient information. I'd never do anything to compromise patient safety or confidentiality. For them to even make that type of statement is so offensive." Planned Parenthood of Southeast Houston released the following statement Oct. 30: "We regret being forced to turn to the courts to protect the safety and confidentiality of our clients and staff, however, in this instance, it is absolutely necessary." Coalition for Life photo illustrates how close pro-life group's building is to Planned Parenthood clinic. Johnson said she's not sure why Planned Parenthood is so concerned. "Planned Parenthood is an organization that really runs on fear. If somebody crosses them, they are quick to threaten that person. I've worked for them for a long time and seen them threaten lawsuits multiple times," she said. "I'm not sure what they're scared of. When I first got the restraining order, I was so surprised. My initial response was, what do they think I know? What are they feeling guilty about?" Asked whether she believes Planned Parenthood is concerned that information about its quotas will become public, Johnson responded, "Probably, yeah. I think they're just scared of the whole thing." She said she believes the injunction is simply a scare tactic meant to keep her quiet. "Clearly, that kind of backfired," she said. Johnson explained that she resigned after she saw an ultrasound-guided abortion in which an unborn baby was vacuumed out of a woman's uterus. "Ultrasound-guided abortions are not typically done in Planned Parenthood abortion centers because they're more time-consuming, and that's just not something that centers like that do," she said. "I'd never seen one of those done before. For whatever reason, the physician had called me back to assist with the procedure. When I saw that, that was really when my heart was changed." Johnson, who was employed at the clinic for eight years and served as a director for two years, said the issue of abortion was "unsettling" for her the whole time she worked with Planned Parenthood. She said she kept "pushing down the guilt" and felt spiritual moreVoting Question: A few questions about my criminal history.?

I am a freshman at a private university in Texas. I have gotten to the point where I want to transfer and/ or take a break. I chose the school due to its strong program in my major. I am changing my major now, so it seems there isn't much of a point for me to be at this school. I know college is a great opportunity to meet all kinds of different people...but I feel I am exposed to the same "snotty, ungrateful, and rude" kid every moment on campus. My school is filled with students who come from extremely wealthy families. I don't mind being surrounded by wealthy people, as I could be considered such. I just wish my school was more diverse. I know a lot of kids get depressed leaving home and going to college. I have had past history with depression, but it has reached a record high in severity. I have also been diagnosed with OCD... it is truly ruling my life. It has gotten to the point where I won't let myself go to sleep until 5 am, because I am obsessed with cleaning... it's bad! The Death Penalty, you hear the word and instantly your mind starts wondering about it. The Death Penalty is know as the worst punishment, or charge, to get. The punishment is Death. The death penalty is very rare, but since the 1980’s, it has became more and more common and more than 1000 people have been executed. The question you might first think about is… How do they kill them? The most common method is the lethal injection. A chemical that is released into your body that will instantly kill you. There are some other rarer methods known as hanging, electrocution, gas chambers, and a firing squad. Many people go against the Death Penalty, this is for many reasons. One of the reasons is that it breaks the rule of the 8th amendment of the Constitution of No Cruel or Unusual Punishment. The Death Penalty can be thought to fit in with this and can not. It is Killing a person, but some people think they deserve it. Another reason people disagree with the Death Penalty is that killing a person is killing a person. They Say no matter what the person did, they are still a person and that doesn’t give you a right to kill them. But there have been about 18,000 murders in the US a year, and some people think that there needs to be more executions. What I think? I think the Death Penalty is one of the things that I am really disappointed about. Im just a boy, but I know lots of stuff about this topic. So I do not and will never support the Death Penalty. My first reason why is that it is killing a person. Sure they are Mass Murderers but still 2 wrongs don’t mean a right so that doesn’t mean we have to kill them because the government killing them is basically the government murdering them. People say that it cost to much money to keep inmates in prison for life, actually that’s not correct. Studies show it cost more to execute someone. Is the lethal Injection really painless. First of all, they aren’t 100% sure what it feels like because they can not test it. But studies show that people can go through an extreme amount of pain during the procedure. It usually depends on the person. You see there are three main parts in the lethal injection. There’s the anesthetic like material that is said to make you feel nothing, there’s the poison like material that kills you. And finally there’s the material that doesn’t make you move at all. Science says that over 10% of the Lethal injections the US has done the inmates where most likely going through an extreme amount of pain but didn’t even feel anything. It happens in sugary sometimes, it looks like there asleep but there fully awake feeling everything. Here are some facts I made from researching… ••In the United States, about 13,000 people have been legally executed since colonial times. ••By the 1930's up to 150 people were executed yearly. 2 Lack of public support for capital punishment and various legal challenges reduced the execution rate to near zero by 1967. The U.S. Supreme Court banned the practice in 1972. ••In 1976, the Supreme Court authorized its resumption. 3 Each state could then decide whether or not to have the death penalty. As of the 2002-OCT, only the District of Columbia and 12 states do not have the death penalty. The states which have abolished executions are typically northern: Alaska, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin. However, seven jurisdictions have the death penalty but have not performed any executions since 1976. They are also mostly northern: Connecticut, Kansas, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, South Dakota and the U.S. military. ••The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that whenever a sentencing jury has the ability to impose capital punishment, the jury must be informed in advance if the defendant would be eligible for parole. ••Almost all states have an automatic review of each conviction by their highest appellate court. ••There are a number of federal offenses that can lead to the death penalty. About 21 prisoners are housed in death row at the federal Terre Haute, IN facility. One was executed in 2001. This was the first federal execution in 36 years. ••Texas holds the record for the largest number of executions since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Virginia has executed a larger percentage of its population than any other state over 1 million in population. ••As of 2002-JAN-1: From 1976, when executions were resumed, until 2002-JUL-1, there have been 784 executions in the US. About 30 to 60 prisoners are currently killed annually, most by lethal injection. About two out of three executions (65.6%) are conducted in five states: Texas, Virginia, Missouri, Florida and Oklahoma. Texas leads the other states in number of killings (256 killings; 34% of the national total). There were about 3,690 prisoners sentenced to death in 37 state death rows, and 31 being held by the U moreResolved Question: What is your opinion on this Conn. police: Kidnapping-ransom story was a lie?
Connecticut family made up claims that it rescued three immigrant relatives from a kidnapper by showing up with baseball bats at a ransom exchange meeting, according to police reports. Instead, the reports say, the family had arranged transportation to Connecticut for their relatives after they entered the country illegally, and a melee broke out when a driver asked for an additional fee of $60 per person to bring them to the family's home. Greenwich Officer Martin O'Reilly wrote in a report that a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent told him that "the entire kidnapping story was completely fabricated." The report was obtained by Hearst Connecticut Newspapers through a public records request. Police say they detained nearly 20 people after the Aug. 2 fight in a Greenwich shopping center parking lot. The three illegal immigrants were identified as Antonio Gonzales, Nicolas Gonzales-Ceron and Ramon Hermelindo. Their family members in Willimantic, about 90 miles from Greenwich, told police the immigrants were their cousins who had been kidnapped from Texas. Police say the relatives claimed the kidnappers demanded $2,500 for each of their cousins, and the family had arranged to meet with the captors to pay the ransom. Police reports also show that immigration authorities issued a bulletin earlier on the day of the fight to inform local police to watch for a large blue van from Texas because passengers were being held hostage and abused. A Greenwich police spokesman referred questions Monday to a department records supervisor, who was off for Columbus Day, and federal immigration officials. Paula Grenier, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said Monday that there was no kidnapping, but the incident included what she called "elements of human smuggling." Grenier would not comment further because the investigation is ongoing. A police report says the three immigrants and the van driver were all in the country illegally. Grenier said three of the four were deported to Mexico and the fourth was deported to Guatemala. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D9B9ONI81.html moreResolved Question: what do you think of the story im writing?
Most restaurants in Humble are either Dairy Queens or attached to gas stations. I'm pretty sure the only real restaurant I've ever been to is the Rainforest Cafe in Houston, because my parents wanted to "treat" my sister and me. Mama and Daddy, sadly, fit the Texan sterotype perfectly. Die- hard Longhorn fans? Check. Cowboy boots in public? Check. Disgusting Texas accent? Yeah, you get the point. Luckily, most of their hick friends claim I'm "from a different planet." Probably because I talk like a normal person, choose books over ESPN, and like my head cowboy hat- free. So when I was blessed the opportunity to go on a foreign- exchange program, I snapped it up. I had already expirienced enough Texan public- schools for a lifetime and Humble High School isn't exactly Harvard. The second I signed up for living in London for a school year, I knew I made the righ choice. In London, people are actually somewhat respectable. They don't listen to Kenny Chesney or get weekly perms or drink beer with their breakfast. The people in London are my kind of people. Plus, my host family owns a small record label and have two sons, one 14 and the other 15. I've talked to the 14 year old a few times over Facebook. His name is Thomas and he's staying with my family. I doubt he will last three minutes. He comes from people with class, not... Texans. I know I seem like I'm hating on my own kind, but I've been dying to get out of Humble the second I arrived. I never belonged. But now, as i step out of my taxi to the equisite, five star London restaurant, I suddenly feel insignificant. I feel like a dirty little small town girl. I feel under- dressed. And for the first time since deciding on living in London for a year, I feel... Scared. Nervous. What if Rick and Emily don't like me? What if I've had a Texan accent my whole life and I didn't even know it? I tucked a loose blonde wave behind my ear, inhaled a shaky breath, and pushed open the restaurant door. Suddenly, I was in a different universe. Piano music trickled from the private room, glasses clinked, and wine was poured from bottles priced at more than my mom's car. Everyone I saw was beautiful. Everyone was elegant, poised, classy. I then realized I had been standing there staring and the host was giving me a dirty look. "Can I help you?" he snarled, looking at me like I was dirt. His thin black moustache quivered and his beady black eyes scanned me suspiciously. He reminded me of a rat, but he was still the scariest person I had ever seen. Half of me wanted to giggle because I've never heard a real British accent before, and the other half wanted to run away. I straightened my back and cleared my throat. "Yes sir, I'm supposed to be dining with the Thompsons?" It came out more like a question. His expression completely transformed. "Oh! Of course! You must be Hanna! Yes! They... they mentioned... Yes! So sorry, right this way!" He scurried to the back room with me fast- walking to keep up. I was lead into a small, secluded area with few people. I immeadietly recognized Rick and Emily Thompson. I had seen a picture of them before, but they were even more beautiful and powerful looking in person. They were the kind of people who had a hold on everyone they knew, and they loved it. I never felt so overwhelmed. I stepped up slowly. "Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson... It's me, um, Hanna" Their heads slowly rose from their plates and peered at me as if to see if I was worthy of being in their presence. But when they recognized me, I felt much better. They stood up and each gave me a quick, loving embrace. Mrs. Thompson held my hands and shot me a dazzling grin. "Hanna, you are even more beautiful in person. We have been so excited to meet you. And please" she said, waving her hand like she was shooing away a bug, "call me Emily." Mr. Thompson stepped in. "And please, call me Rick." I weakly smiled at them. I'm pretty sure that's the only thing I could do, just smile and nod. They were so overwhelmingly gorgeous. Emily's dark brown hair contrasting with her deep green eyes, and Rick's bone structure carved by the gods themselves. And their accents... better than I imagined. I sat down in the empty chair and they followed. I was suddenly shot question after question, as if it were an interview. They did not seem to want to talk about themselves, they wanted every detail of my life. "What is Texas like?" "How is the school there?" "What languages have you studied?" I answered each as calmly as I possibly could. It went on for a while, until I realized their champagne being refilled at a startling pace. I could sense them starting to let loose. They laughed a little louder, asked stranger questions, and their words ran together. I felt embarassed for the poor couple. They must be so ashamed for getting intoxicated on our first meeting. Ifelt embarassed for the poor couple. They must be so ashamed for getting intoxicated on our first meeting. I laughed nervously at everything they said. Finally, the bill came. I felt relived. I was excited to get home and go to sleep. Rick and Emily hailed a cab and stumbled in, drunkenly laughing at something I didn't even want to know. I leaned against the window and took it all in. The city lights, the people walking the streets after a party, the cars zooming by. It was uncomprehenable. Suddenly, the car jolted. I waited for them to get out first. They saw my unsure look and laughed. "Oh! We're dropping you off! We have a party tonight at a friends house, so sorry. But Charles is home, he can keep you company." slurred Rick. As I was about to knock again the door was flung open, and the person who opened it was already walking away with a phone attached to his ear. What the heck? Yeah, hello to you too. I craned my neck, trying to see his face. "Uhh hi?" I said questionably. He pointed up his finger as if to say one second and quickly chattered into his phone. I sighed and closed the door. I took this as a chance to take it all in. There was a majestic staircase to my right, and a sitting area to my left. A large chandelier dangled above my head. I gazed at every detail of the house. Suddenly, I heard mystery man's phone snap shut. He came towards me. My heart stopped. His dark brown hair was disgruntled, his bone structure was unreal, and his eyes were so green i had to look away. I was in the presence of a god. He tossed me a grin that knocked me off my feet and extended his hand.I was in a daze. I limply put my hand in his and he squeezed mine. I almost died. "You must be Hanna? I'm Charlie. Sorry about my parents... they have a party like every night and they tend to put those first." I'm pretty sure my mouth was agape and drool was pooling at my feet. I bit my lip and giggled. He strolled into the kitchen, grabbed an apple, and tossed it in the air. "So," he started "How are you liking London?" I smiled. "I adore it!" That's all I could muster out. He smiled back at me "You have yourself a lil' Texas accent!" I gasped audibly and covered my mouth. He chuckled. "No! It's cute! I like it! It's different!" I sighed a little. Charlie bit into the apple and asked me a few questions. I was barely paying attention. All I could comprehend was that i was talking to the most amazing human being I had ever seen and he was smiling at me like I was amusing him. I yawned, exhausted. Charlie quickly rose."I'm sorry! Hello, I go to a public university in Texas with financial aid to assist in paying for it since I am on my own and without my parent's assistance. Last year, I attended a private university for a semester through a program they offered where I could attend and intern in Washington D.C. I went and had a good time, but only because the university promised that they too would be able to offer me financial aid. I should have pressed on them to give me specifics but they told me we would handle it once we got there. The university told me they needed a form from my school stating that I would not receive financial aid for the semester so that the school I was visiting could give it to me. They told me my records were clear and that I was good to go financially until a month after I came back. It turns out that the university received the necessary forms from my school in August, but had failed to properly take receipt of them. After speaking with the dean and explaining my situation, he told that he would be able to help. However, the university came to the conclusion that even though they made the mistake, I was still responsible for the tuition. I have given up trying to get the aid that was promised to me and figure that I need to pay. Not to mention, my university will not let me register for next semesters classes until I get the issue cleared up with the school I visited. My question is, I need a student loan for about $17,000. I have no credit and no parents to assist and would like to be able to find something with at least deferred interest but do not know what to do or where to look. This is a private university and I'm afraid I cannot get a loan through FAFSA to cover this. Does anyone have any ideas of where I can look? moreResolved Question: If conservatives believe in the constitution and states rights then why did they let this go unnoticed?

I sat in the seat calmly until the officer asked me to get out and do a field sobriety test, I did the "eye follow the pen" test and then they tell me I'm being arrested for public intox. The next day, the cop tells me "a public intox isn't a big deal as far as your record goes," I should just sign the paper work (saying I'm guilty of PI), and pay the fine so I won't have to go to court, and I can simply go back to Texas and forget this ever happened. I come to find out the PI shows up as a misdemeanor on my record. I guess since I signed the paperwork and paid the fine I'm screwed as far as fighting the charge, even though I wasn't acting in a belligerent manner at the time of the arrest...but how do I go about clearing my record?I should also include that after being arrested I had to spend 6 hours in the drunk tankGood lord! I was hoping for some supplemental information from some people with experiences similar to mine. Instead I get a chick who cannot properly spell "drunkenness" or "fought" calling me ignorant. Last time I use yahoo answers for anyting. moreResolved Question: Where to find public records?

"Rand Paul, the son of Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), is touting the first public poll on the GOP primary for next year’s U.S. Senate race. According to the survey, conducted for WHAS11, Paul trails GOP frontrunner Trey Grayson by only 11 points, 37-26. Among “conservative” Republican voters, he only trails by 7 points. And Paul only trails the two potential Democratic nominees by single digits. (Grayson leads both candidates, Attorney General Jack Conway and Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo.) “Great news for Rand Paul ahead of his scheduled ‘moneybomb’ internet fundraiser on August 20,” writes Joe Arnold in an analysis of the network’s poll. “It paints him as a legitimate candidate and not a fringe candidate.” And with any luck, the money bomb August 20 will help even more. Of course, Rand has a record in Kentucky of having established a taxpayer rights group and being active locally, as well as always conservative. McConnell is backing Grayson, but also backed the bank bailouts and I understand Grayson approved them as well at the time they were being considered. Rand Paul, like his Dad, feels very differently. What do you think? And did you see Rand's web site? http://www.randpaul2010.com/ moreResolved Question: How much will a Public Intoxication offense affect me in the near/distant future?
Recently, I was arrested for Public Intoxication in Texas and taken to jail. Instead of posting bail, they allowed for me to pay a cash fine which allowed me to pay for my ticket up front, basically pleading guilty and going on my record. I am currently a college student and I was wondering if this will significantly affect my chances of getting an internship? Also, after I graduate in a few years will employers look at this as a big deal? This is assuming I never put myself in a situation for this to happen again. Thanks. moreResolved Question: Are Modern feminists endowed with a superiority complex?
http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/roberts/090811 Taking the oath to "do equal right to the poor and to the rich," Sonia Sotomayor was finally sworn in as the first Latina on the U.S. Supreme Court. No sooner had the kerfuffle surrounding her "wise Latina" remark subsided, when Carol Smith saw fit to pen this wise verdict in the New York Times: "In my experience, female bosses tend to be better managers, better advisers, mentors, rational thinkers." Not to be outdone, last week NPR analyst Cokie Roberts opined in the Washington Post, "Women tend to be a lot more commonsensical than men are" and admitted to hectoring her husband that "Men are just lesser beings." Call it whatever you want — female empowerment, turning the tables, girls letting off a little steam, whatever — it's time to blow the whistle on feminist-inspired misandry. For decades, male-bashing has been deemed an amusing side show in the Battle of the Sexes. Some consider it funny when an advertisement depicts a man maimed by his girlfriend. Others will say an abused man simply had it coming. (Think former NFL star Steve McNair, shot four times in his sleep by a jealous girlfriend — but no one could bring themselves to call it "domestic violence.") In recent years, gender supremacism has entered the mainstream of political discourse. Former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan of Texas once declared, "I believe that women have a capacity for understanding and compassion which a man structurally does not have." And consider Hillary Clinton's remark, "Research shows the presence of women raises the standards of ethical behavior and lowers corruption." Thank goodness we have ethical paragons like Hillary to show us out of the wilderness. Sometimes pronouncements of women-as-uber-species approach the point of logical absurdity. Appearing on NPR radio, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona once gushed that women "get so much done because we make lists." Somehow that sounds like the freakish musings of an obsessive-compulsive, not the reflections of a person trying to make the world a kinder, gentler place. A February 5 editorial in the Christian Science Monitor announced grandly that "a woman leader governs differently than a man, bringing new perspectives and helping other women." I'm sure that came as a surprise to the men who worked long and hard to enact Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and a bevy of other programs that primarily benefit women. Sometimes the gender supremacists get downright ugly, lapsing into demagoguery to cast men as abusers, deadbeats, and batterers. If you want a real eye-opener, take a look at University of Michigan Catherine McKinnon's writings. And don't forget Valerie Solanas' SCUM (Society for Cutting up Men) Manifesto. Not all academics are enamored of the feminist antics. Professors Paul Nathanson and Katherine Young of McGill University have written two scholarly tomes that probe the feminist dystopia. Their first book, Spreading Misandry: The Teaching of Contempt for Men in Popular Culture, lamentably concludes "men are society's official scapegoats and [should be] held responsible for all evil, including that done by the women they have deluded or intimidated." Their second work, Legalizing Misandry: From Public Shame to Systematic Discrimination Against Men, reveals how feminists have capitalized on their disdain for men to reshape policies in such wide-ranging areas as marriage, divorce, custody, and even employment. Case in point is the recent revelation that President Obama's stimulus plan is skewed to favor women, even though men in the manufacturing and construction industries have been hit hardest: www.renewamerica.com/columns/roberts/090723 . America has a courageous record of drawing on our traditional notions of fairness and justice to confront supremacists in our midst. We have faced down the bigots, the xenophobes, left-wing fascists, and race-baiters. Now we must come to terms with the dark side of modern feminism, a movement that fosters contempt and scorn for men. moreResolved Question: How many eligibility lawsuits are there?
Seems everyone wants to if or how Obama has spent on lawyers. No matter what one says or gives links to its all a lie. HOW DOES ONE EXPLAIN HOW THESE ARE BEING PAID? here is a partial listing and status update for some of the cases over Obama's eligibility: * New Jersey attorney Mario Apuzzo has filed a case on behalf of Charles Kerchner and others alleging Congress didn't properly ascertain that Obama is qualified to hold the office of president. * Pennsylvania Democrat Philip Berg has three cases pending, including Berg vs. Obama in the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a separate Berg vs. Obama case alleging he wasn't qualified even to be U.S. senator and Hollister vs. Soetoro a/k/a Obama, (now dismissed) brought on behalf of a retired military member who could be facing recall to active duty by Obama. * Leo Donofrio of New Jersey filed a lawsuit claiming Obama's dual citizenship disqualified him from serving as president. His case was considered in conference by the U.S. Supreme Court but denied a full hearing. * Cort Wrotnowski filed suit against Connecticut's secretary of state, making a similar argument to Donofrio. His case was considered in conference by the U.S. Supreme Court, but was denied a full hearing. * Former presidential candidate Alan Keyes headlines a list of people filing a suit in California, in a case handled by the United States Justice Foundation, that asks the secretary of state to refuse to allow the state's 55 Electoral College votes to be cast in the 2008 presidential election until Obama verifies his eligibility to hold the office. The case is pending, and lawyers are seeking the public's support. * Chicago lawyer Andy Martin sought legal action requiring Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle to release Obama's vital statistics record. The case was dismissed by Hawaii Circuit Court Judge Bert Ayabe. * Lt. Col. Donald Sullivan sought a temporary restraining order to stop the Electoral College vote in North Carolina until Barack Obama's eligibility could be confirmed, alleging doubt about Obama's citizenship. His case was denied. * In Ohio, David M. Neal sued to force the secretary of state to request documents from the Federal Elections Commission, the Democratic National Committee, the Ohio Democratic Party and Obama to show the presidential candidate was born in Hawaii. The case was denied. * Also in Ohio, there was the Greenberg v. Brunner case which ended when the judge threatened to assess all case costs against the plaintiff. * In Washington state, Steven Marquis sued the secretary of state seeking a determination on Obama's citizenship. The case was denied. * In Georgia, Rev. Tom Terry asked the state Supreme Court to authenticate Obama's birth certificate. His request for an injunction against Georgia's secretary of state was denied by Georgia Superior Court Judge Jerry W. Baxter. * California attorney Orly Taitz has brought a case, Lightfoot vs. Bowen, on behalf of Gail Lightfoot, the vice presidential candidate on the ballot with Ron Paul, four electors and two registered voters. She also has brought forward several other cases and has conducted several public campaigns to generate awareness of the issue. * In Texas, Darrel Hunter vs. Obama later was dismissed. * In Ohio, Gordon Stamper vs. U.S. later was dismissed. * In Texas, Brockhausen vs. Andrade. * In Washington, L. Charles Cohen vs. Obama. * In Hawaii, Keyes vs. Lingle, dismissed. In addition, other cases cited on the RightSideofLife blog as raising questions about Obama's eligibility include: * In Texas, Darrel Hunter vs. Obama later was dismissed. * In Ohio, Gordon Stamper vs. U.S. later was dismissed. * In Texas, Brockhausen vs. Andrade. * In Washington, L. Charles Cohen vs. Obama.
