Alaskan Tour Questions asked

Open Question: Do you have to book shore excursions to do things like hiking on an Alaskan Cruise?

I'm going on an Alaskan Cruise for my honeymoon and I'm noticing that all the excursions are very expensive. My fiance and I are hoping to do one big excursion (like a helicopter ride or something). Both of us love hiking and would really like to do some hiking while we're there but don't want to pay a ridiculous price to follow someone around on a hiking trail. Are there options for us to just go hiking without a guided tour? more

Resolved Question: Dallas Texas and Ft Worth Hunters?

Any Dallas - Ft Worth Hunters interested in Hunting Alaska in the near future? Iv'e been wrtting here under the handle Glacierwolf. I am a long time Alaskan hunter, trapper and certified Alaskan hunter safety instructor. There isn't a square mile of Alaska I have not worked on, flown over, hunted, trapped, fished, been stuck, stranded or crashed a plane on thanks to 7 tours of duty with the US Coast Guard and 10 years volunteering as an Advanced EMT doing bush and mountain rescue. I am heading to Dallas Jan 29 to Feb 4th for business training. If any locals want to hear the scoop on how to hunt Alaska like a local for cheap - and what to expect and bring - I got time to get together. I've helped allot of people fullfil their dream of an Alaskan hunt. Be happy to help. I'll trade - my Alaskan knowledge for which steak houses to visit and which to avoid while in Dallas. more

Resolved Question: Anyone like to read about some really funny true stories from UK?

A guide at Windsor Castle was struggling to make herself heard over the roar of low flying aircraft coming into land at nearby Heathrow. She was interrupted by a tourist who demanded what was wrong with the town planners, and why had they built the castle so close to the airport. The highlight of a cruise liner's visit to the Alaskan port of Valdez was a guided tour of the southern end of the great 800 mile pipeline through which, the guide informed them, some 1.3 million barrels of oil came daily from Prudoe Bay in the north. When he asked if there were any questions, someone solemnly enquired, `How do they get all those empty barrels back up to Prudoe Bay?' `Good home wanted for year-old Basset bitch. Understands every word I say, but ignores it.' Card in Portsmouth shop window. A group of tourists escorted around the British Houses of Parliament suddenly found themselves in the presence of the then Lord Chancellor, Lord Hailsham, resplendent in full wig and gown. Spying behind the group the figure of Neil Marten MP, the Lord Chancellor called out in greeting.`Neil' with dignified vigour. And all the tourists did. A tourist, on a driving holiday in Britain was reported to have been overcome by the Cotswolds but astonished at the number of villages with the same name. `After Chipping Sodbury,' he said, `there were three villages in a row called Loose Chippings.' An English classics scholar, trying to impress his tour party colleagues on holiday in Athens, offered to converse in Greek with the local ferry officers at the docks to enquire about departure times. The locals, after recovering from fits of laughter, then revealed to the rest of the group, in perfect English, the scholar's question: When do the galleys sail for the Isle of Aegina, O sailors?' In 1981, fifty San Francisco nudists arrived in Miami for a national convention to find their airline had lost all their luggage, including their clothes. The 1982 Association of British Travel Agents conference in Phoenix, Arizona, had to change its venue at the last moment when it discovered that its original hotel had been double booked. The story is told, apocryphal no doubt, of the DJ working on a small and remote radio station in Scotland midway through his programme late at night on 1 October 1977. News came to the station that Bing Crosby had died (the station producer happened to be on the phone to the States and picked the word up almost as it occurred). The DJ thought he could possibly be the first person in the UK to publicly announce the death, so he put on a long track and rushed off to record library to get an old recording to play. Upon returning, nervously excited by now, he put the first record onto the turntable without looking at it and broke into the record then playing with a sombre voice: 'I am deeply sorry to have to inform' you listeners that I have just received news from America of a great tragedy. The legendary Bing Crosby is dead. As a humble tribute, I would like to play one of his songs,' and as he switched over to his Crosby 'selection', the melody was beamed out, 'Heaven . . . I'm in Heaven...' BEWARE OF TRAINS GOING BOTH WAYS AT ONCE. - Notice at Durham level crossing more

Resolved Question: Would you be interested in a new survival training trip behind Glacier Bay Alaska in the summer?

This is a vast area that is seldom explored that’s north of Glacier Bay, north west of Haines Alaska and west of the Village Klukwan, and west from along the Haines hwy and the Chikat river. From this location you would travel buy truck, then river boat, then atv’s into the area until the equipment would be left and we go on foot the rest of the way. Here is a Google info on this area Here is the map location on Google maps; 59.366794, -136.109619 Here is the next area; 59.286228,-136.211243 And the next; 59.275003,-136.212616 And the way out; 59.247628,-135.86792 http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=59.366794,+-136.109619+to:59.247628,-135.86792&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrcr=1&mrsp=2,1&sz=10&sll=59.288332,-136.054687&sspn=0.232853,1.09314&ie=UTF8&ll=59.288332,-136.054687&spn=0.232853,1.09314&t=h&z=10&lci=com.panoramio.all,com.youtube.all,org.wikipedia.en,com.google.webcams If you use the map setting you can see it’s a very remote area near Haines Alaska. There are also points for reference with wikipedi and youtube so you can get a better idea of this place. Ok a few friends and I are thinking about starting a survival tour guide into this area. We want to know if people would be interested in this. It would be a week stay with food and transportation provided with skilled Native Americans and Experienced Alaskan guides to teach survival methods. This area in the summer has all sorts of wildlife, bears, moose, goats, wolves, eagles spawning salmon and an abundance of edible plants. And there is gold in the streams for panning. We don’t know what we will charge yet. But we first need to know how many would be interested in going on such a trip. So would you like to go on such a trip for a week in the summer in this area? Thanks. Any comments welcome. Ask you friends too. This is not solicitation as we are not a business as yet. We are merely doing field research to see if this is possible. We have been in that area so getting there isn’t a problem. But we still have to figure the costs involved and pay for all the licensing, permits, insurance and equipment, etc and everything else before we do anything. So we are not, I repeat not, looking for customers at this time. But we are looking for numbers of people who might be interested and their view points to determine if there is an interest in this. Please note that there are clickable places on the map with photos and information. What about these things to do; trap making, making moccasins and leather clothing, weaving baskets, making primitive weapons and learning how to use them, salmon fishing, making fire the primitive way, building primitive shelters, swimming, berry picking, solar still and water purification, navigation by stars, photography, gold panning, collecting precious stones, marksmanship with bow and arrow and provided rifles? Have any more suggestions? We will have 5 guides 3 male and 2 female, also thinking about offering ½ price to a few to help out and we will have two teenagers (18yr) as packers.I am dead serious about this as I may not have that much longer on earth and want to try this. I have some years of experience as a hunting guide and I have 3 people willing to match my $30,000 investment and we can get loans if need be. I value the advice of the people here. So I am asking here first, then it’s to the travel section with a similar Q. more

Resolved Question: Do we all agree with this view of Sarah Palin?

September 11, 2008 BY ROGER EBERT Sun-Times Movie Critic I think I might be able to explain some of Sarah Palin's appeal. She's the "American Idol" candidate. Consider. What defines an "American Idol" finalist? They're good-looking, work well on television, have a sunny personality, are fierce competitors, and so talented, why, they're darned near the real thing. There's a reason "American Idol" gets such high ratings. People identify with the contestants. They think, Hey, that could be me up there on that show! My problem is, I don't want to be up there. I don't want a vice president who is darned near good enough. I want a vice president who is better, wiser, well-traveled, has met world leaders, who three months ago had an opinion on Iraq. Someone who doesn't repeat bald- faced lies about earmarks and the Bridge to Nowhere. Someone who doesn't appoint Alaskan politicians to "study" global warming, because, hello! It has been studied. The returns are convincing enough that John McCain and Barack Obama are darned near in agreement. I would also want someone who didn't make a teeny little sneer when referring to "people who go to the Ivy League." When I was a teen I dreamed of going to Harvard, but my dad, an electrician, told me, "Boy, we don't have the money. Thank your lucky stars you were born in Urbana and can go to the University of Illinois right here in town." So I did, very happily. Although Palin gets laughs when she mentions the "elite" Ivy League, she sure did attend the heck out of college. Five different schools in six years. What was that about? And how can a politician her age have never have gone to Europe? My dad had died, my mom was working as a book-keeper and I had a job at the local newspaper when, at 19, I scraped together $240 for a charter flight to Europe. I had Arthur Frommer's $5 a Day under my arm, started in London, even rented a Vespa and drove in the traffic of Rome. A few years later, I was able to send my mom, along with the $15 a Day book. You don't need to be a pointy-headed elitist to travel abroad. You need curiosity and a hunger to see the world. What kind of a person (who has the money) arrives at the age of 44 and has only been out of the country once, on an official tour to Iraq? Sarah Palin's travel record is that of a provincial, not someone who is equipped to deal with global issues. But some people like that. She's never traveled to Europe, Asia, Africa, South America or Down Under? That makes her like them. She didn't go to Harvard? Good for her! There a lot of hockey moms who haven't seen London, but most of them would probably love to, if they had the dough. And they'd be proud if one of their kids won a scholarship to Harvard. I trust the American people will see through Palin, and save the Republic in November. The most damning indictment against her is that she considered herself a good choice to be a heartbeat away. That shows bad judgment. Wow-I couldn't have said it better myself more

Resolved Question: Is Sara Palin loosing her shine? Is this a reflection on John McCain’s judgment?

With the revelation of anti-environmental positons, misrepresentations and lies is Palin’s trust factor slipping? It has now been learned that most of the things that gave Gov. Palin her shine as stated in her acceptance speech were either misrepresentations or false statements. As listed below various journalist have fact checked her claims and found the following: PERSONAL COOK - During the acceptance speech Governor Palin stated that she didn’t see why the Governor needed a personal chief/cook so she fired the cook and sometimes her children miss her cooking. In fact, she reassigned her as an administrator and she now travels with Palin to cook for her wherever she goes. SELLING STATE PLANE - She spoke about selling the Alaskan governments plane on “e-Bay” in fact she attempted to sell it on E-Bay four times. No one took the initial bid. Subsequently the plane was sold through an aviation auction house at a $800,000 loss, Not on E-bay. FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY - Palin made a trip to her church, in October 2007, the Palin family went on a tour of the Hub Juneau Christian Teen Center, where Palin and her family worship when they are in Juneau. The state gave the center $25,000, according to a May 2008 memo. She appears to be financially supporting and/or donating tax payer money to her church. Palin has continued to repeat the already exposed lie that she said, "No, thanks," to the famous "bridge to nowhere" (McCain's favorite example of wasteful federal spending). In fact, she said, "Yes, please," until this project became a symbol and political albatross. EARMARKS - As Mayor Palin she hired a lobbyist for the explicit purpose of earmarks. Among the spending projects Palin helped obtain through the earmark process: $500,000 for a youth shelter, $1.9 million for a transportation hub, $900,000 for sewer repairs and $15 million for a rail project, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan watchdog group; the problem is because of the oil revenues Alaska, taxed as 3/4's the per barrell value, doesn't have a need for money. ALL TAXPAYERS PAYING ALASKA UNDER PALIN Regarding the oil revenues Alaska is, in essence, an adjunct member of OPEC. It has four different taxes on oil, which produce more than 89% of the state's unrestricted revenue. On average, three-quarters of the value of a barrel of oil is taken by the state government before that oil is permitted to leave the state. Alaska residents each get a yearly check for about $2,000 from oil revenues, plus an additional $1,200 pushed through by Palin last year to take advantage of rising oil prices. Any sympathy the governor of Alaska expresses for folks in the lower 48 who are suffering from high gas prices or can't afford to heat their homes is strictly crocodile tears. As if it couldn't support itself, Alaska also ranks No. 1, year after year, in money it sucks in from Washington. In 2005 (the most recent figures), according to the Tax Foundation, Alaska ranked 18th in federal taxes paid per resident ($5,434) but first in federal spending received per resident ($13,950). Its ratio of federal spending received to federal taxes paid ranks third among the 50 states, and in the absolute amount it receives from Washington over and above the amount it sends to Washington, Alaska ranks No. 1. She obviously is not an agent of change unless she is referring to a change of jobs. She is not the marvick she is be labled as and seems to only be "a fundraising tool" for McCain. http://clintonistasforobama.blogspot.com/2008/09/new-palin-scandal.html http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20080909/us_time/sarahpalinsalaskonomics;_ylt=AnLDDhiB5Kd_uJRs0LjKNNis0NUE http://voices.washingtonpost.com/washingtonpostinvestigations/2008/09/palins_earmarks_spark_question.html?hpid=topnews  more

Resolved Question: Aerial Shooting of Bears (So Palin can preserve Caribou for her personal killings?

Twice before, Alaskans have voted against aerial shooting of “predators.” Twice before, Palin, using the State, has derided to try to use “ballot box biology.” As voting on a new initiative approaches, Board of Game (BoG) members have toured Alaskan communities arguing that aerial shooting is essential for reducing predators enough to achieve target moose and caribou harvests. Intensive management, they claim is the only strategy justified by the scientific evidence. more

I'd like to know what are some favorite activities (probably mild) and tours in the cities but we don't want to miss the activities on the ship. What is a good time to return to the ship? So far the Mount Roberts Tramway or the Salmon Bake in Juneau, the Klondike Summit and Suspension Bridge in Scagway appeal to us but we'd like other's opinions. Resolved Question: Kenai or Denali Alaskan Trip?

I am considering doing a guided tour through either Kenai Peninsula or through Denali National Park. I know virtually nothing about either region but wanted some info from someone who has either been to both or knows anything about the difference between the two. The prices and dates are virtually identical so it's basicaly a toss up between the two types of terrain/ what I am likely to see. I am partial to the water but if Denali is truly magical and a must-see, I am willing to do that. more

Resolved Question: Which job is more dangerous?

Alaskan Crab fishing or serving in Iraq. I have experienced both (served three tours in Iraq and am currently an Alaskan fisherman) but I can never decide which one has been more dangerous. What do you think? more

Resolved Question: I went to a breeders dog kennel business and want to know if this place is good to adopt a puppy from or not.?

I'm just going to say what I saw and noticed at the place. I cant compare my visit with any others because i've never been to a place with so many dogs. My statements can be good and bad, i just want to know if this is a average place to a adopt a pup from. We arrived to find he was out pretty far in the country in a small house. When we got out dogs were barking like crazy. I went to the door to meet the breeder and as found on the phone he was probally in his 60's. Shaggy and lit a few ciggerates in are short tour. We arrived to find he was out pretty far in the country in a small house. When we got out dogs were barking like crazy. I went to the door to meet the breeder and as found on the phone he was probably in his 60's. He was also shaggy and lit a few cigarettes in are short tour. He seemed nice and answered my questions to a certain degree. When I asked about the breed I was interested in, Shiba Inu’s, he said they were as any dog and needed good repetition to train. Besides our breeder, our kennel walk started with going to one of the shiba kennels were a mom and her two 8 week pups were. The kennels at one side were lined horizontally with a big walk way splitting another row of kennels. The side we were on had a type of metal barn sheet over head. So that half of the kennel was covered the other was not. This row I think consisted of the moms and their pups which seem good. The row of kennels smelled really bad as poop was everywhere in each kennel. The dog’s smelled bad as well but as I said, this could be natural for taking care of so many dogs. Also there water seemed weird looking in some cases. But getting back as we walked along this row dogs were going nuts, wanting attention of our own but settled down after a bit. The man went and got a pup and we held the cute little guy for awhile, he was shaking from being I figured scared like no other, dirty, and other then the shaking very immobile. The mom seemed protective as she watched keenly at us but didn’t approach the gate but remained farther back. After awhile of holding and asking a few questions I felt kinda bad for the scared little guy. My girlfriend and her friend were with me and of course fell in love with the pup. When we gave it back to the breeder and he plopped it back in the kennel all of a sudden dogs everywhere starting going crazy as dogs from each side of the shiba pup kennel rushed to their edge of the gate to get close to the pup. All three shiba’s were moving quickly around each other, tongues out smiling, was really weird but interesting seeing such a big reaction. After that we went to a whole other section were a ton of male adult shibas were and most of them as the other breeds were going crazy. One shiba climbing up on the gate, another licked my hand as fast as he vibrated up and down. The breeder had a lot of dogs and a lot of kennels. A few were half way covered by metal sheets overhead, some with small tarps, others with nothing at all. The breeds consisted of shiba inu’s, Alaskan malamutes, retrievers, and I forget what else. There was a lot and most seemed desperate for attention. Is this place like any regular big kennel? He sells his shiba pups for 500 and requires them to be kept for 8 weeks before. If there are certain aspects of information you need to answer my question let me know and I’ll try to answer what is needed. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Is Alaskan crab fishing truly the most deadly job in the world?

Well from what I here it is but I cannot get hard facts. Truth be told, the reason why I ask this question is because I am actually going to join the crew of the Alaskan fishing ship, the Time Bandit (as seen on the popular deadliest catch, and due in large part to my dad who helped me get the job to fill a crew absence because of his connection with the captain. I think his name is Johnathan something...). I have served three tours of duty in Iraq already, one with the marines and two with the special forces, but I think there is a higher casualty rate in Alaskan crab fishing. note- for those of you that think I am crazy, well, I am, but I just consider my self an adventurer who likes to live life on the edge.thank you very much xxfun2lovexx I was very proud to serve my countryWill do AK. Its Dutch. more

Resolved Question: Alaskan Cruise - Holland America Line and Zaandam?

Me and my fiance' are planning to take an Alaskan cruise tour with Holland America for our honeymoon and i was wondering if anyone had been on their ship the Zaandam and what your experience was like. If so, would you go on that ship again? or would you pick another cruise line altogether? Also, this is our first time on a cruise so if you have any tips that you can share that would be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Do I need to book a special day trip to see whales?

I am going on a 7 day Alaskan Cruise that departs from Vancouver on Sept. 10th. Will I see whales while I'm on the ship? The ship will stop at 3 ports...Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. There will then be two days of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay and College Fjord before docking in Anchorage. Once there, I'm taking a three day trip inland, stopping at Denali and ending up in Fairbanks. I would really love to see some whales at some point. However, the only day trips listed on the cruiseline form that involved whale watching was in Juneau and I've already booked a glacier walkabout helicopter tour. I'm afraid to book two day trips so close together in case one runs late. more

Resolved Question: Which lodging is better outside Denali National Park--Alaskan Chateau or Denali Park Hotel? Same Price.?

Going to visit Denali National Park in 2 weeks with my husband and 6 year old son. Looking for convenient affordable lodging--we'll have a car so driving 10-15 minutes is okay. Any recommendations? So far we have found availability at the 2 hotels above...both are about $130. Has anyone stayed at these? Also--would love suggestions for activities while we are there...especially pros and cons of booking an organized tour in the park vs. taking the shuttle bus. more

Resolved Question: Need some help planning honeymoon stuff....?

We are going on an Alaskan cruise in Sept ( I will be 18 weeks) and I am going to call my Dr this afternoon but just curious as to what you guys think so I dont get my hopes to far up. The onshore excursians we were going to choose from were Catamaran Whale Watching Rain Forest Zip Line Tour Glacier Kayaking Dog Sledding and an ATV tour (This is the only one I don't think I can do) The others dont come to an abrupt stop, I checked and not a lot of risk of hitting my abdomen. more

Resolved Question: Alaskan Cruise and Land tour through Princess Cruise Lines?

I am taking an Alaskan Cruise, 7 days, and a 3 day land tour following up into Danali National park via train. Has anyone done this trip before?? I would love to be able to talk with someone about their experience on the ship, their shore excursions, how things went, the weather? We are leaving July 30th and returning August 10th. Anyone have a trip like this? more

Resolved Question: Alaskan Cruise Question:?

I am interested in going on an Alaskan cruise this summer with my husband and mother, 60 y.o. I am interested in ANY information, experiences, What cruise line is best for Alaskan cruises? I have traveled with Carnival in the past and had an amazing experience. What is the difference between the Southern and Northern tours? Which one is I guess more "scenic" and will have things for a 60 y.o. who is not athletic to participate in? This is something that she has wanted to do for years, and would really like to look into it for a trip this summer for her! Again, ANY information will be appreciated more

Resolved Question: WHERE IS LAURA BUSH ??? Where, indeed, is Laura Bush??

Except for one rumored Alaskan appearance that I cannot nail down even in a general way, I cannot find ANY evidence of Laura Bush in public, or of being under the same roof with George since the day before Condi Rice was told by the Lebanon Prime Minister to NOT come visiting during her Middle East tour during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, She immediately hoofed it back to Washington and disappeared herself for two days, during which time Laura apparently disappeared as well. Well, about 2 months ago, there was ONE newspaper story that stated the First Lady was currently sleeping at the Mayflower Hotel in downtown Washington--if you are not familiar with it. (It is the Washington-Insiders Establishment hotel for at least the past 60 years.) Sooo--With that fulsome background now on the table--Has anyone heard of or seen Laura Bush in their state/city/region since before the beginning of the Crawford vacation (at which Condi was present for at least the first few days)? more

Resolved Question: Alaskan Cruise, are the day tours worth the expense in your experience?

Are the day tours the cruise line offer worth the cost and are they/were they pleasant for you? Any particular tours you liked and why? We (2 of us) are kinda thinking of just getting off the boat when it docks and finding our own adventures, maybe renting a car etc for the day and checking things out. Whatever. Being spontaneus. Is this a good way to do it or do you have any other insights/awarenesses or suggestions? Thanx!Thanx to all of you for your sage advice and for sharing your expereinces. It has helped a lot! more
