Guided Tour Questions asked

Open Question: First time traveler to Europe, I need advice.?

I'm visiting Europe this summer with my family (2 adults, 4 children between ages 4 and 16). I'm not sure whether we should rent an RV and drive through Europe at our own pace, or buy a guided tour package (30 days) that is at a faster pace but includes hotel stays and transportation. We are planning on visiting the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain and Switzerland. We have a span of 3 months to do all of this, if we rent an RV. Any advice from past travelers to Europe? or from anyone who has travelled in an RV. I'm not sure how the bathroom situation would turn out, RV bathrooms have always looked a bit cramped to me. more

Open Question: What large caves with tour guides have you toured? Did you learn anything about the history of the area?

I remember touring Robbers' Cave in Oklahoma as a child, but I don't remember seeing any artifacts or even arrowheads on display. I only remember the guide telling us the story about the robbers & about the formation of stalactites & stalagmites. Our family probably talked about possible previous civilizations & read about caves in our encyclopedia at home. My parents weren't intellectual giants, but we did the basic stuff when it came to thinking & trying to learn about such things. We loved the whole idea of caves! How about you?Looks like some great answers. I hope some people will answer the same question under History, where I have rec'd 0 answers. (more chances for Best Answer) more

Open Question: Communicating with Japanese students. I need help!?

For a week, several students are coming from Japan to my school so they can see what high school is like (they went to middle school) and to work on their English. Being the socially awkward moron that I am, I decide to volunteer to be sort of like "tour guide" for them. My Japanese buddy knows more English than I do Japanese, but there is still a language barrier and I'm not very good with meeting new people so I get nervous and speak really quickly making it difficult to understand each other sometimes. I would greatly appreciate it if you could give me a couple things to ask her to start a conversation and/or some simple Japanese phrases/questions I can ask her. I know a little bit of Japanese, just simple and random sentences and phrases, but not enough to have a decent conversation. She's so cute, but I feel embarrassed asking her to repeat everything she says because I can't understand what she's saying because of her accent or because she is so quiet. I need tips on how to get past that. Domo Arigato more

Open Question: Do you have to book shore excursions to do things like hiking on an Alaskan Cruise?

I'm going on an Alaskan Cruise for my honeymoon and I'm noticing that all the excursions are very expensive. My fiance and I are hoping to do one big excursion (like a helicopter ride or something). Both of us love hiking and would really like to do some hiking while we're there but don't want to pay a ridiculous price to follow someone around on a hiking trail. Are there options for us to just go hiking without a guided tour? more

Resolved Question: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE BEGINNING OF MY STORY?

CHAPTER 1: In the ancient and historical city of Washington DC, on a certain summer day, I was rolled top and bottom in mud in an attempt to get rid of my chasers. Ironically, on that very same day, I was crowned the Queen of Royal States Dominion. It’s amazing how much your life can change in one day. I was never supposed to be queen. I was not part of the Abraxas Line of Succession. I was just another tourist visiting my country’s capital snapping pictures of everything in sight. The happy banners hung everywhere, waving from every roof top, were not in my honor but Princess Alexandria’s, the woman who was to become queen. The banners said ‘Long Live Queen Alexandria!’ They did not say ‘Long Live Queen Lela!’ All the talk that week had been about Princess Alexandria and her coronation minus the terrible tragedy that led to it. But there was no talk of the teenage girl who had come to Washington DC with her class in the ‘Kids of the Future’ program to learn about her nation’s history. How did this happen? Surprisingly, it’s pretty simple but according to the person who is publishing this, a memoir has to be longer than a page, so I have to fill you in all the details instead of giving you the simple truth. I’ll try to write as much as I can but be forewarned. Congress, my group of advisors, are arranging a meeting which is to begin in a few hours to discuss this ‘unfortunate mishap’ but I’ll write as much as possible from now till then. The dude leading the tour was called Mr. Berkeley. He walked up front, guiding us through the hallways congested with Secret Service agents, portraits of past presidents, and huge marble busts of monarchs in the Abraxas dynasty. I didn’t know how the ‘Kids of the Future’ director, Mr. Jackson, managed to pull this off. I mean, how many people can get a private tour of the Capitol Palace by one simple phone call that didn’t just go to the parts you see in the public tour, but in the private family parts you never see, except maybe on TV, and even then it’s just some director’s idea of how the family’s private quarters look, and not the real thing? It blew my mind. The décor looked quaint, even more quaint than when the Royal States Dominion was the United States of America. It looked, if you asked me, like something when the United States of America was first founded about fifteen hundred years back. I guess the Abraxas monarchs liked to keep things traditional even though they were memories of the broken government. He gathered us into a large open bedroom, that had an arched ceiling. I recognized it from the holographs of the Capitol Palace I had studied before I came here. It was the bedroom of James Abraxas, the first monarch in the Abraxas dynasty as well as the person who restored North America, establishing the Kingdom of the Royal States Dominion. He started telling us the history of the room which I already knew by heart so I inserted a small cylinder into each of my ears and opened my wrist computer, putting it on screen setting so Mr. Jackson wouldn’t see the holographic proof that I wasn’t paying an inkling of attention. I surfed through the long list of songs, selecting ‘Born For This’ by Paramore. I was a big fan of the classics. Even though the quality of the recording was awful back when Paramore was a band, I feel that their songs can still relate to me even if I am three hundred years after them. I could see my friend, Jade, turn every now and then and by the way my head is bent down so they are staring at my bright blue converse (It still surprises me that fashion hasn’t changed at all in the past three-hundred-something years.) with my hands tucked into to the pockets of my faded black skinny jeans, she knows that I’m listening to the amazing musical talents of Paramore- according to me, not her. She smiles at me mischievously and catching Mr. Jackson’s prize winning glare, she turns her attention back to our tour guide. At that very moment, Prince William, King George Washington Abraxas’ grandson, enters the room. All of us jump in shock. To see a royal who might someday rule our country in person is equal to well, by my standards, meeting with Paramore. Prince William is seventeen years old, a year older than me. He has shiny dark brown hair that ends just below his ears and curves in all different directions, making his cheek bones more noticeable and his bright blue eyes more prominent than before. I can’t help but think that he is so incredibly handsome even though I know that I’m never going to be the Cinderella who always gets her prince for a variety of reasons. One, I know that the Prince is probably arrogant due all the other girls who fall all over him and I refuse to be like that. Two, even if the prince isn’t arrogant and haughty and everything else in a person that totally pisses me off, he has too much of a public life while I am in the Covert Operations portion of the ‘Kids of the Future’ program and everyteverything else in a person that totally pisses me off, he has too much of a public life while I am in the Covert Operations portion of the ‘Kids of the Future’ program and everything I do is strictly confidential. Three, William is such a boring name. He seems a little surprised to see us here- I guess there were no public tours today- but he recovers quickly and raises his hand in greeting. We return with a smile and a ‘Your Highness.’ We stand their awkwardly in complete silence. My earpiece’s volume which was barely noticeable before on account of Mr. Berkeley talking but now, everyone within ten yards can hear the music blasting from my ears. Mr. Jackson turns to glare at me and everyone giggles. Mr. Jackson’s glares are extremely hilarious when they aren’t pointed at you. Under Mr. Jackson’s steel gaze, I slowly reach up and take out the nanotechnology from my ears, dropping it into his open palm. “I’m sorry,” I said, except it sounds more like a question than apology.“No, you’re not,” said Mr. Jackson. He beckons to the double doors. “Out. Now. We need to talk.” .I know its wrong to but I think that Mr. Jackson’s lectures and tantrums are so hilarious. I hold my breath and follow Mr. Jackson out of the room. The prince is staring at me curiously probably because I’m grinning from ear to ear, recalling all of Mr. Jackson’s tantrums in the past and trying very, very hard not to burst into laughter right there. Mr. Jackson didn’t even bother to close the door behind us. It was like he wanted me to be publicly humiliated. My grin widened at the thought, a hint of my insanity. “You are giving us problems, missy,” he said. That was all he’d managed because a Secret Service man was running toward us. “Tags!” He ordered. We showed him the pass we had been given. He scanned it and then asked, “Have you seen Prince William?” “Right here.” said the prince, appearing at the door. The Secret Service man looked relieved. “Your Highness, please follow meSomething has happened.” The prince looked worried and bid our whole group a formal farewell before proceeding toward the Oval Office. I looked around and noticed Secret Service men everywhere, talking into their throat mikes, and all running toward the Oval Office. The Oval Office. The King’s work room. Suddenly, I understood. King James Abraxas IV was dead. END OF PART 1 OF CHAPTER 1 more

Voting Question: How can I be a good college/university student rerecruiter for high school students?

I'm a freshman and soon my college is holding a Spring Open House for high school students. I signed up to welcome/recruit students. Last year I was making the same choices as these students, so I want to give off a good impression and hopefully give them good reasons to attend the college. How can I appear friendly, professional, and yet reassuring? How do I prepare for the Open House? I won't be giving tour guides but I will be answering questions from student/parents and telling them about/guiding them to the various events being held. So, any advice?! I'm super nervous but excited! more

Voting Question: Why did I LOSE OUT on the Job?

Please read the whole question before judging me. I am 27 and decided it would be great to audition to be a Tour Guide at a very fun museum. The audition ended up being packed and there were about 20 other people also waiting their turn. Our audition was to stand up and make the Audition panel laugh and be inspired by our engagement. As I waited, I began realizing this was my knack. I always make my friends laugh. When it was my turn, I stood up and started my schtick (routine). I said "Howdy folks! I'm Carolyn Wilson and you're about to learn about ME! And where I come from! I am so far away from this town, they think I got lost on my way to the bathroom." When no one laughed or looked inspired, I decided to play it droll by saying: "Wow, yeah I probably shouldn't have said that." I said this in a very non chalant, laid back way suggesting I was admitting to being bad. Instead of applauding me for actually admitting I had no confidence, they told me to step aside and that I probably wasn't going to get called back. WHAT THE FUCK?! I thought being modest was supposed to get you places! I actually stood there and solmenly told them "Yeah, I wasn't funny, I admit it" and instead of shaking my hand and welcoming me aboard, they denied me employment. What did I do wrong? I don't understand. more

Voting Question: In the name of God, why do I HATE my Job?

I am 27 and work in customer service. Our job is to give tours at a museum. Every single day we have to have a big meeting with all the staff and play improv games and "Act Cheerful and Smile a lot." I've been doing this for almost 4 years now and nothing has changed. I'm tired of it. While all my friends either moved up in the company or got other jobs, I've been stuck giving the same damn tour and doing the same customer stuff forever. And yet all my managers, new and old, seem to think we as staff need to continuously be trained to be more guest friendly! And its the same crap any idiot with common sense would know what to do: Always approach guests with a friendly attitude, engage guests and go above and beyond, ask guests lots of friendly questions about their experience, never talk about inappropriate content, etc. This is all stuff we know! Why do they keep telling us the same bullshit every year as if we're first graders? And managers, if you're reading this- please answer. We're a non-profit organization- guests will come and pay money for the exhibits regardless how nice the guides are. Trust me- I hate the service at Great America, but I still go every year. Why are they so hard on customer service people and always expect MORE? So today I had had enough. My new supervisor Betsie wanted me to look more engaged during an improv warm-up game. I rolled my eyes and told her "Leave me the **** alone! I've been here 4 years, this is all old to me. I know how to do my job. Just let me do it." She wrote me up and told me I had no right to yell at her like that. True, I didn't- but you understand. (AND DO NOT TYPE UP **** LIKE "If I were your boss, I would have fired you." I've heard it all before). I'm prepared to be told I should grow up, be grateful to have a job, and all that other stuff. That's not what I'm asking. I want to know why I'm 27 and still am stuck doing customer service jobs when I have a degree, am damn near 30 and all my other friends are raking in salaries? And why are customer service jobs so awful to work at? Why is management the same no matter where you go? Everything is Micromanagement and its terrible! They don't care about us. They just treat us like dirt. Please answer! And only answer if you can give me detailed responses- no spam ads, no one-sentence quips.Uh no I wasn't black hoof, and since you're probably a BLACK GHETTO FEMALE, learn to writer proper english or go back to where your Chains used to cling to you! more

Voting Question: What are the top attractions in the Louvre?

I'm going on a tour of France with my school in about a month, and we'll have the opportunity to wonder around the Louvre for a couple hours. We don't have all that much time (i'd guess 3 hours, but that is totally estimated) and I wanted to know what the main attractions "must see" things are to look for. I don't care about the other wildlife (well, I do, but for this trip, I am just interested in wolves). How can I do this? Must I look for them myself? Is their a tour I can take? Resolved Question: Should I take my FWB to Las Vegas with me?

We are not in a labeled, exclusive, or otherwise defined relationship. I mentioned that I was going to Vegas for my birthday and was asking about his recent trip there. After telling me about his trip, he stunned me by saying "I'd love to go back. Want some company?" Since he is the one that has been adamant about keeping our relationship as no-strings as possible, I am sort of confused. I see vacationing together as something couples do. Also, my brother lives there and is playing tour guide for the weekend. My friend knows this and is perfectly fine with it. If I wasn't going to develope a relationship with someone, I wouldn't be meeting their siblings. Am I just being old-fashioned? more

Resolved Question: Why did I almost get fired?

I work as a tour guide at a busy museum, and we have a lot of staff. Our "team" has been designated a new Supervisor. Her name is Erin. Erin was so sweet and kind when I first met her- and I even was gracious enough to show her around the museum, give her tours of the exhibit we work on so she could learn the information, and tell her if she needed any further help, I was here as a friend. 6 months later and Erin's demeanor has changed. I'll explain- and please READ THE QUESTION before judging: I was just getting off a tour in which I was training a new employee and was scheduled for a program. But my tour had run late so I was still assisting the new employee. Erin told me that I was late for my program, and next time call her- and also that I was "klumping" with staff. Klumping means we are seen with one or more staff together, and it appears like we're talking about personal stuff when in reality we usually are not. I told Erin I thought she was wrong to scold me for doing MY JOB! I wouldn't have been late to my program if I was training a new employee (something Erin technically should have been doing). And I wasn't klumping- I was telling the tour guide I had just finished training another new hire. Erin just happened to see me at the wrong time and assumed I was. Now I have to have a meeting about my "negative" attitude when in fact, I did nothing wrong! Before I get the stupid "If I was your boss, I would have..." Please. I don't want to hear it. You're not my boss so don't write as if you are. Right now I am thinking about going to our director and reporting Erin for being unfair and also rude. I thought Erin was my friend when I first met her. Turns out she's a bitch. After everything I did for her! And I understand at 27 I should be grateful to have a job in this economy, but come on! I don't like being scolded for not doing my job, when in fact I WAS Doing it! Why is micro-management like this? No matter what customer service job I work at, the management treats you like crap. And I'm not the only one who feels this way. My other co-workers also don't like how they're nit-picking everything we do, and are just looking for ways to fire us for any "wrong" doing. Please help me! I'm actually feeling suicidal. This is not what I wanted to do in my life. And yet here I am, dealing with jerks for bosses. Is there ANY job where the bosses aren't uptight anal people? Please help. more

Resolved Question: Is this sentance wrong?

I wrote a sentence in a paper the goes like this: The whales are very curious and often swim up to the boats. my dad said that you only use THE in front of a singular noun. So he said its: The whales are very curious and often swim up to boats. (I am a tour guide in this paper and I'm try to convince people to go whale watching so I said the whales will play next to THE boats and bla bla bla to THE boats. Is THE not important- do I get rid of it? more

Resolved Question: is 'stingray sailing' abusive to the stingrays?

were going to the cayman islands for spring break and my dad said were going on a stingray sailing tour ( http://www.stingraysailing.com/index.html ) i saw a manatee video on youtube a week ago (i love manatees <3) about how they are abused on pet the manatees tours. The guide grabbed a baby manatee and wouldnt let it swim away and just held the poor thing while it screamed and fat tourists pet it. I dont want that to happen with the stingrays, and i asked my dad about it, the website says "Once at the Sandbar, one of our crew will teach you the proper technique for interacting with the stingrays, then enter the water with you to show you how it is done. We will even supply you with squid (the favorite food of the rays) so that you can feed them and even tempt them up to the surface yourselves." is that..right? is that ok for the rays or are they just in captivity? my sister said she saw something on animal planet, and they probably just cut off the rays' stingers so they wont hurt anyone. My mom agreed with this and said not to worry, ill be fine. But im not worried about TOURISTS safety, im worried about the STINNGRAYS safety! i dont want to go pet a bunch of abused stingrays. Now my whole family hates me for "being so negative about our vacation" but i just want to make sure the stingrays are happy, not just only the people who pet them. by looking at the website can someone tell if it abuses the rays or not? thanx :) more

Resolved Question: Why do people keep lying about America being in a Recession?

I work as a tour guide in a museum, and sometimes I'm forced to "baby-sit" in a play area designated for kids nine and under- and their parents. You white mothers should be ASHAMED of yourselves! I myself am 27, and am downright embarrassed at how you Upper-middle class Yuppie mothers act. 1) I noticed so many moms coming in with double-strollers, DEMANDING they could bring them in the play area. I had to tell at least 20 stuck up bitches to park their strollers in the area behind them called "STROLLER PARKING"! Apparently you rich golddiggers never learned how to read anything besides your $1 million marriage contracts, since the signs are so evident. So many parents demanded they should be able to bring their strollers in the area. I had to explain it was a fire hazzard. They didn't understand. I even told one woman "Either park your stroller, or park your face out of mine." She seemed insulted. 2) Why do you White Moms spoil your children to oblivion? Seriously, I saw one parent allow her kid to throw all the books off the shelf in the reading area. She then looked at me like I WAS SUPPOSED to put the books back! Uh, no. Its YOUR kid. You do it. I told the woman "Either put the books back, or I'll call security." She reported me, and my supervisor talked to me but understood it wasn't my fault. You Double-stroller pushing moms who don't have to work since your rich husbands do, think you're inclined to take your spoiled brats to museums on your lunch hour, just so you can act stressed and be rude because you feel entitled to everything. 3) Why do you let your kids cry all the damn time? Seriously! Its annoying. Hire a ******* baby-sitter and stop bringing your children everywhere you go. Just to show off usually. You become a pamper buying, reluctant slave to your child and we have to deal with it at the museum. 4) WHY FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST are you so rude?! If we, as tour guides, try to tell you to calm your children down from throwing balls or running, you roll your eyes and act like its our fault. YOUR the parent! Do your job and stop complaining. 5) I hate when I hear the economy is bad. When I see all these rich white women come in with thousand dollar handbags, Gucci outfits and cash to spend on $100 lunches, come on! What recession? I don't see it. And then they look down on me because I'm a tour guide. Please, explain!I asked for answers, not one sentence quips! I'm also a white woman, but I'm pissed at these rude rich women! COME ON ANSWER CORRECTLY!Damn it! EXPLAIN how we're in a recession and all the parents I COME into contact with are rich, upper-class snobs who have tons of money? I'm confused.STOP TELLING ME "If I were your boss, I would have fired you." Newsflash- you're Not my boss, and I live in a Non-Fire at will state, so they have to have a lot on my file for me to get terminated. more

Resolved Question: Strange college sports?

I'm a junior in high school and for the past few months I've been scouting for colleges. My first stop was at George Mason University in VA. In the debriefing speech made by the administrations officer at the school he described how GMU offers a wide range of sports. Then he says that GMU has an underwater hockey team and a Quittage team (the sport from Harry Potter where they all fly around on brooms) and this isn't a joke. One of the student tour guides was on the quittage team. Am I the only one that thinks both of these sports are ridiculous? And how would you even watch underwater hockey? Anyone know another college that has these sports? more

Resolved Question: Looking for software to automate the process of booking tour guests at a facility?

I am looking for a software solution that will help automate the process of completing a tour booking for guests who visit our facility. We offer one-on-one tours to guests, and right now go through a lengthy workflow which could be significantly reduced. Ideally, the system would do the following: 1.) Operator completes the booking with the tour date and time, guest name, email address, tour options (what they want to see), tour guide's name, and their parking location. 2.) The system automatically emails the guest using their name, email, tour date/time, and tour details with a confirmation that they can print out. 3.) The system automatically alerts various departments (based on the tour options criteria from step 1) of the date and time of the guest's tour. 4.) 24 hours after the guest's tour, the system automatically emails the guest thanking them for coming. It doesn't seem to be particularly complicated work-flow, certain tasks are simply completed based on simple criteria. I just don't have the know-how or time to set this up with some other solution. I'm looking for a suggestion on possible software solution for this project. more

Resolved Question: Does the landlord legally have to be present when people come to view the house?

I don't much feel like playing tour guide around the house I live in to a group of strangers. They're meant to come tonight at 8pm (late, especially since I went to bed at about 9.30pm yesterday!) but the landlord isn't coming to show them around. He also didn't OK it with me, but my housemate by telephone (who is out, incidentally) So under UK law, does the landlord have to legally be present for people to come and view the house? If he doesn't, I'll obviously oblige and show these people around despite not wanting to, because it would be within my tenancy agreement to do so. more

Voting Question: Cheating girlfriend or am I overreacting?

My gf is a tour guide and we have talked seriously about getting married etc. She is 24 I'm 27. We met whilst I was on tour in China last year and kept up a long distance relationship until I came over to be a teacher about 4 months ago. She has just visited Thailand as part of her work (first time overseas and first time doing international tour guide work). The problem I've just encountered tonight is that she rung me a couple of times. The first time to say there are lots of bars on Phuket Island and that she finished her work early and was now shopping for souvenirs and was very tired. The second phone call was disturbing...she mentioned the bars again and said there were many Europeans and Americans and that she was excited by the sheer number of them. At this point I took it as a sign she is about to cheat on me. So I'm rethinking everything and about to pack my bags in a week or so after my contract finishes. Clearly she comes across as a bit of a player and not someone I could trust. A trusted friend said she might be trying to save face by telling me this to give me the opportunity to break up with her. Either way it's caused unnecessary stress and has me firmly believing she will cheat on me. It's a popular holiday resort with many chances for her I think. So I need sensible answers on this one.I agree with the second answer. I am maybe sounding like an immature fool. She is only going for 5 days (will be back in 3 more). There's a serious trust issue which is making me question where I am going with this relationship. But I still think it's a bit disrespectful to turn around and tell your partner how excited you suddenly are because there's a lot of good looking guys around...we are supposed to be in a committed relationship for crying out loud. more

Voting Question: I'm sending a thank you note to an admissions officer?

This note is going to an engineering school in upstate New York and I just need it to be read over. Dear RPI Admissions Officers, Thank you for holding the information session and campus tour on February 16th despite the inclimate weather Troy experienced that day. It took a lot of convincing for a personal family friend to drive me three hours north while snow warnings were well under way, but believe me, it was definitely worth the trip. The information session answered all of my questions about the application process, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with your policies. After learning that Rensselaer allows for such a great degree of creative freedom regarding applicants’ college essays and considers each application for academic scholarship only makes me even more excited to apply this coming fall. And although it was below freezing outside, the tour was still very enjoyable. My tour guide, Justine, was fantastic at showing the group the main aspects of campus life and was very helpful when answering all of my questions that ranged in topics from where students do their laundry, to grant information, to rules concerning Easy Bake Ovens in dorm rooms. Visiting Rensselaer made me realize how much I truly love the purposeful and rigorous academics, as well as the positive atmosphere the staff and students create- characteristics I have not seen in other colleges I’ve considered. Thank you once again for giving me such a memorable experience, and I look forward to visiting in the near future. Sincerely, *My name here* What should I do to it, or is it okay like this? I plan on handwriting it on nice stationary and I have very nice, readable, script handwriting. Is that okay, or is it better to type it? Thank you! more
