Redwoods Tour Questions asked

Resolved Question: Help with Geometry homework?

1. Felicia is a park ranger, and she gives school tours through the redwoods in a national park. Someone in every tour asks, "What is the diameter of the giant redwood tree near the park entrance?" Felicia knows that the arm span of each student is roughly the same as his or her height. So in response, Felicia asks a few students to arrange themselves around the circular base of the tree so that by hugging the tree with arms outstretched, they can just touch fingertips to fingertips. She then asks the group to calculate the diameter of the tree. In one group, four students with heights of 138 cm, 136 cm, and 126 cm were able to ring the tree. What is the approximate diameter of the redwood? 2. Zach wants a circular table so that 12 chairs, each 16 inches wide, can be placed around it with at least 8 inches between chairs. What should be the diameter of the table? Will the table fit in a 12-by-14-foot dining room? Explain. 3. A 45 rpm record has a 7-inch diameter and spins at 45 revolutions per minute. A 33 rpm record has a 12-inch diameter and spins at 33 revolutions per minute. Find the difference in speeds of a point on the edge of a 33 rpm record to the point on the edge of a 45 rpm record, in ft/s. Thank you so much! more

Resolved Question: Is it possible to do a "green" roadtrip?

My green credentials were recently called into question because of a blurb in my Yahoo bio saying I loved roadtrips. What I meant was that I travel to places like Kings Canyon National Park, Death Valley, northern California redwood grooves, Anza -Borrego State Park -- places where you can't take the train, or a bus unless you're on a group tour -- and if you've ever travelled on a bus you know they're not "green!" -- and hitchhiking is illegal and would be cumbersome with all my gear. Sometimes a friend or two comes along, and of course we carpool! Rather than add to the bio, I deleted the reference, but I love to visit our wildlands and yet I do want to be green in doing so. My car gets above-average gas milage, I don't take lots of side trips, and once I get there I'm using my own two feet to get around. But is there anything else I can do to make my road trips "green?" more

Resolved Question: WEST COAST must sees and dont sees?

Hi In less than two weeks, we are leaving for a trip. Our driving plan is this - go down Interstate 5 from Northern Washington to Anaheim California where we will spend some time at Disney. Then we will head to Big Sur via Hwy 101 and Hwy 1. We will stop at Solvang and Mendocino. From Big Sur we will go to Carmel and Monterey, then San Francisco and the Redwood National Recreation Area in Northern California. From there, we will stay on the coast stopping in to visit the Dinosaur Park (?) and the Sand Dunes. Continuing the coast to Astoria then back to Interstate 5 for a fast dash home. My question comes to this. Along this pathway, do you have any suggestions for places to STOP AND SEE???? We have 2 children (10 and 12) in our traveling party along with an elementary teacher. Have you toured the Dunes? Do you have any reccomendations? Do you have any words as to places to AVOID? more

Resolved Question: Ideas for a lone traveller?

I'd like to take a few trips this year and don't have anyone with the time or the money to go with me. I don't mind travelling alone at all. However, one of the trips I want to take is to the california redwoods. I don't know anything about that area and don't know where to start for planning. I wouldn't mind joining a group tour, but I don't want a very structured itinerary. And I definitely don't want a singles travel dating service. Are there websites that might offer what I am looking for? thanks! more
