Voting Question: Summary help!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
I'm an Italian boy and study English! Can you summarize the most important phrases of this text? Next month he's flying to Nepal whit five friends to begin a three-week trek of the Himalayas. Jamie, 20, is aiming to raise money for young disable people at the same time. His younger sister, Jackie, who is paralysed and in a wheelchair, is the inspiration for Jamie's trip. There's a charity called Go-Getters. It helps ypung people who are seriously ill or who are disable, like my sister. 'I always enjoy travelling abroad, especially on unsual adventures, so it's a great way to combine a holiday with helping people,' says Jamie, a Sociology student at Edinburgh University. Jamie is raising £5,000 before he goes. A small part of the money pays for his flight and the rest goes to Go-Getters, which organises holidays and other leisure activities for young disable people. The charity hopes to use the money to buy a new minibus, specially designed for people in wheelchairs. Jamie is amazed by the response of other students to his unsual idea. 'They all want to help me. It's fantastic! Next week all the other students in my group are doing a 24-hour sponsored silence. People are going to pay us to keep quiet! Some of the lecturers are going to do it as well-for some of them it's going to be very difficul!' At the moment, Jamie is training for the trip. tanks!!! He goes to the gym every morning, goes running every evening and goes swimming for times a week. Jamie is also following a special high-protein diet of fish, fruit and egges. 'We're going to walk through the high Himalayas for about seven hours every day for almost three weeks, so we need to be very fit! We're all really excited about it, but I also feel nervous. It's certainly a big challenge for all of us'. And what does Jackie think of Jamie's plans? 'It's a grat idea but a little bit carzy too! I'm so proud that jamie and his friends want to help!' Hello. I love photography -and by that I don't mean I love taking hundreds of photos of stupid objects. I actually take attractive images whether they're of sunsets or sunrises, animals or landscapes or people. I'm traveling this year in June and would like a good quality camera that enables me to take attractive photographs. The camera I currently have is a Nikon coolpix and while I like it, I want something a bit more advanced. I'm considering purchasing an SLR (I know that they're pretty proffesional, but could someone actually explain what's so great about them?). Here are my tricky preferences though. -- I'm only a student, plus I'm still fundraising for my trip, so I'm aiming to find the best camera I can for around $500, I won't go for anything higher than $600 at the moment (and that's pushing it) -- I don't need amazing lenses, but It has to have a decent zoom ability. -- My current Camera is 8.1MP and I'd like to upgrade it to perhaps something in the 10-15MP range. -- Nikon or Canon please. -- (optional) I wouldn't mind a video recording extra :) -- (optional) also, I take my camera wherever a potential photograph could present itself like the beach, a creek, etc. So If I would find a camera that had all the above, plus some sort of weather endurance.. it would get definitely bonus points. Thanks so much for any answers. Crystal. moreResolved Question: Poll My manifesto for change part 1 ten tax reforms any votes?

The balance would not be transferable from part time worker to higher earner, only transferable if not working/claiming benefits.) 6/ Income tax of 5% from £20k to £30k rising by 2% for every extra £5k to a maximum of 35%. 7/ restore duty on all imports 10% on none luxury items 20% general products 40% on anything considered luxury or undesirable (so perfume/tobacco/high class cars etc) 8/ Abolish road tax and replace with annual license fee and insurance plate higher charge for more polluting vehicles (road haulage vehicles to be exempted in UK owned who will pay an annual business license. Follow this principal on other taxes of a similar sort. 9/ Travel tax to established as a proper tax to be levied on leaving and entering payable at the time of departure and arrival £100 per person on departure £50 on entry for uk citizens double for all other nationalities. 10/ A new sugar tax of 20% to be levied on all food products containing added sugars (so cakes, biscuits, sweets etc not fruit but juice drinks, cola etc.) I can't cost these as I don't have time/access to the necessary but maybe someone will. the aim would be to introduce over the lifetime of a parliament with only the new taxes added in the first year and the other reforms introduced by lowest cost to the treasury first but all within 4 years this is partly to do with deficit issues but also there would be significant operational needs to be able to implement. It would of course need withdrawal form the EU but that is a given for me. I will release my ten point plan for the armed forces tomorrow.Gone - Rather patronising not possible to put all reforms down such as employer NI contributions but these will be refered to elsewhereMoney must be raised somewhere as an island we must accept that transport is expensive and we need to create an environment where more 'home' production is sustainable as with energy.everybody else's economics have been shown to crash and burn so maybe mine aren't so bad.Shambling - yes and other reform is needed but the basic direction is to reduce the number of different taxes and overtime complexity. moreResolved Question: Shot put in New York City?

What is your opinion Undercover sting used to cite, deport Carlsbad day laborers workers create traffic hazzards ? In a new twist, Carlsbad police have adopted an old tactic to bust day laborers: undercover sting operations similar to those used against street prostitutes. The undercover stings and the anti-solicitation law that police have been using to cite the workers have opened a legal can of worms. Other cities in the county and in the country that have tried to regulate day laborers have run into similar problems: How do you restrict day laborers without running afoul of their right to seek work? Police say they are simply trying to address a safety problem. It's dangerous for drivers to stop on busy roads to pick up the workers, Carlsbad police Capt. Neil Gallucci said. But migrant rights advocates say they see a more sinister purpose. It's simply the latest scare tactic used by the city to get rid of day laborers, whom some residents consider an eyesore. "Are you kidding me?" attorney Victor Torres asked. "If the issue is safety, why aren't they enforcing the traffic laws that prohibit stopping in a bike lane or the red (zone) instead of using sting operations?" Police said they do routinely also ticket drivers who stop illegally on the road. In an Oct. 14 operation, police officers driving unmarked cars and wearing civilian clothes approached day laborers on El Camino Real and pretended to offer them work. The workers were driven a few blocks away where they were cited under the city's anti-hawking ordinance, police said. Nine people were cited and nine others suspected of being in the country illegally were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol, Gallucci said. Safety first Citing day laborers under the city's anti-hawking ordinance is not new. Police started using the anti-solicitation ordinance ----- which was originally aimed at newspaper hawkers ---- to cite day laborers in 2007. At the time, police said the department had received numerous complaints from area homeowners. The anti-hawking law prohibits people from distributing materials or soliciting "business or contributions from any person who is traveling in any type of vehicle" along roads with a 35 mph or higher speed limit and on some streets with lower speed limits. Thus far this year, 22 citations have been issued for violations to the city's anti-hawking ordinance, Gallucci said. There were seven traffic collisions this year in the areas that were targeted in the Oct. 14 operation, he said, though there was no clear link between those accidents and the day laborers. http://www.nctimes.com/news/local/sdcounty/article_9f398c18-f394-5f8d-9335-8dafad573de3.html moreResolved Question: Is this the final nail in the coffin of the myth that Reagan brought down the Berlin Wall?
"Riccardo Ehrman, a veteran Italian foreign correspondent, and Peter Brinkmann, a combative German tabloid reporter, both claim they asked the crucial questions at a news conference on Nov. 9, 1989, that led East German Politburo member Günter Schabowski to make one of the biggest fumbles in modern history. Mr. Schabowski was supposed to announce a temporary bureaucratic procedure that would make it easier for East Germans to travel abroad, a tactic aimed at shoring up the Communist regime in the face of mass demonstrations. Instead, he inadvertently opened the Berlin Wall. When his fellow Communist leaders decided on new travel regulations, Mr. Schabowski was out of the room. Later that evening he skim-read the executive order, stuffed it in his briefcase, and headed off to meet the world's media. Pressed on the meaning of the new travel policy -- When did it come into force? Did it apply to West Berlin? Did people need a passport? -- the flustered apparatchik rustled his papers and gave confusing answers that led the news media to believe the border was open, with immediate effect. The result, once East Berliners had seen that night's news on West German television, was chaos at border crossings across the city. At Bornholmer Strasse, one of the main checkpoints in central Berlin, confused border guards couldn't get clear orders on how to deal with the crush, and debated whether to open fire. Instead, they opened the barrier, and the Berlin Wall was history. The events have been chronicled by Hans-Hermann Hertle, a historian who specializes in the fall of East Germany. "Among those who are aware of the incident, Mr. Ehrman generally gets credit. In 2008, Germany's president awarded Mr. Ehrman the country's highest honor, the Federal Cross of Merit. 'His persistence at the press conference finally elicited the crucial statement" that brought down the Wall, the citation said: "His name stands for...German unity.'" http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB125597721400194603-lMyQjAxMDI5NTI1MjkyNzI3Wj.html moreResolved Question: I want to get things going as soon as i'm out of high school (2010)?

I'm 20, she's 19. We've been going out for about 4months and she's been really stressed because of her job having low hours and her mom always on her back and never letting her out of the house. I know she's an adult, but she insists that she needs to help her mom and just had told me when she was in high school she was never able to go out. When she finally did go out because of sports traveling team, they would just go to the bar and drink after the games. She told me she'd rather stay home then go out due to being cooped up all her life. We were talking fine and then all of a sudden she told me she can't deal with it anymore, and she was done. She said "there is no us" and she needs to be alone. She's tired of having everyone expect something out of her. I tried telling her to think it through if she really wants that and that we could work through the problems, but she was just getting more and more upset. What more can i do at this point? Should i text or call her back? Should i just let her go and contact her in a week or somewhere down the line? I don't want to just give up, she's worth fighting for, but i don't know how to do it... Okay. I used to live at a suburban beach area for about 10 years and moved in 2007 when I graduated from primary school to the country as we came across a bargain 1.5 acres on the highway. Our aim was to move there and live in a shed until we relocate a house there to live in and pay it all off having no debt. Moving out here to the country wasn’t what I wanted at the time because I love the beach and I am a surf life saver. My older sister finished year 9 at the suburban beach town and we began the new school year of 2008 at the country town. I adapted well as I was starting high school along with other fresh kids unfamiliar to the area but my sister didn’t. She used to be an A student but after many refuses to attend that school and pleads to commute back to her old school her grades had slipped tremendously towards senior years. She now commutes back to the original high school she used to go to which involves many early mornings and travel of driving for mum and dad. Within the past month my Dad has been in a serious car accident but is somehow still here today. My mum has just about lost her licence due to a lot of driving. Living out here is great we all love the green scenery and freedom of debt. Dad wants an investment home though and we found this home near our old suburb that we are always travelling to for my patrols, and where my sister now stay’s at her friend’s house during the week for attending school there. The house is on a quarter of an acre with a pool and is big enough for our 3 dogs, cars, and dads work gear for the business. It even has 5 bedrooms (enough for a room each between me, my bro and sis- I have never had my own room before). Dad wants to buy it and move back to the suburban area where we used to live for the benefits of less driving as the highway he has to drive on is dangerous. The thing thou, is that I am doing extremely well at my school that I’m attending at the moment. I achieve sporting, and academic awards that I never would have received at the big school that I would have to attend if I were to move back. And my grades may slip just like my sisters did. I know what the people are like there (I went to primary with them) and I prefer the people and personalities at my school. I’d rather go to a smaller country school as all the people are much more “tame” and there is a lot more tolerance between all the students. The move really depends on me though and I just can’t decide between all the benefits and disadvantages of moving. The house is on open inspection for this weekend and I have to give dad an answer before then about buying the house. It is not a simple yes or no answer I honestly don’t know considering all the variation. I don’t know whether it would be beneficial or disadvantaging me in terms of school like the same as what had occurred to my sister. I love the lifestyle of living here and the novelty hasn’t worn off and I think it would wear off if I moved into a big fancy house. My dad is willing to be back into debt for this home as the housing market is going to go up and this home will benefit us in terms of driving as my sister is getting her licence and will soon have to drive on the dangerous highway where we live at the moment. moreResolved Question: SAT-High School- college- help!?
Hi! This is my first question on Yahoo Answers, so here it goes! I'm a senior in high school and I am about to apply for college. I'm not trying to brag but merely I am trying to help you get acquainted with my background so you can understand where I am coming from. I consider myself a fairly good student. I have always gotten straight A's and have taken as many possible AP classes as I can. In freshman year I got a 4.0; Sophomore year i got a 4.4; Junior year i got a 4.8 gpa. I do a lot of extra curricular activities and have been doing them for a long time. I also volunteer and give back to the community a lot. However, the one thing that does not seem so great on my college application is my SAT..... Gahh! just the sight of that 3 letter acronym infuriates me! The first time I took it was in the beginning of Junior year. I got a 1760 (560 critical reading, 680 math, 520 writing). I retook during the end of junior year and I got a 1960 (530 CR, 790 Math, 640 writing). Anyways, I really don't think the SAT reflects my grades.. Anyways I've been studying a lot for the SAT over summer and now it's my senior year. My original aim was at least a 2200. However, now there's only a week left before the October SAT and I have only improved by maybe 50 points! It makes me so mad! I really want to go to a good college and become a surgeon. Or maybe even go to a direct medical school like my sister... Anyways I am sorry for venting and dragging this out. I actually really needed something on someone to vent my feelings to because I cried the other day at my frustration with myself. This is kind of pathetic that i resorted to venting through yahoo answers, but idk.. w.e, On to the actual question hahah: Is there any alternative to going to college directly after high school? I know there is always community college, but I reeaaaallly don't want to do that because my parents would be embarrassed of me, and I really do (despite how cliche this sounds) want to make them proud. Like is it possible for me to take a year off after high school and take the SAT after high school, and then apply during my year off? Or what about traveling abroad; can I take my SAT during that? Or is there any other choices I have? Every bit of information would be greatly Appreciated!!! THANK YOU!! moreResolved Question: I keep getting scam email. What should I do?

I remember when the NBA schedule had each team visiting the other teams twice during the season. Baseball used to have at least two home stands against every team in the league. Now the emphasis is on Conference and Division play. So, LeBron James will only come to where I live once this season. The Atlanta Braves only come to where I live once. I think this system is killing off great rivalries and keeping the best players from getting out there and being seen nationwide. As much as I like my team's rivalry with the Lakers, twice year at home is enough. I'd rather see one less home game against the Lakers and have them play Cleveland one more time at home instead. As much as I love the rivalry with the Dodgers, 18 games against them are 6 too many. I'd rather see the Braves or Phillies or Marlins visit a second time. I know traveling is hard on the players. But, they know this when they aim high for the pros. Being on the road is part of the game. If the players can't handle that, then they should play a different sport. A couple months back , the night Obama won the election, My friends and I were out celebrating. I eventually left and two of my best friends, Rashad and Ricky went into a local Dunkin' Donuts. The one I will be talking about mainly in this question is the one who decided to say " let celebrate in a different way , lets smoke weed" The two idiots smoked that night. And they enjoyed it. Now , it wasn't there first time smoking weed but this time was different. An epidemic started at my school where almost every student was smoking and coming to school high or cutting to get high and sneaking back in. I joined my friends some times just for the fun of it but I didn't always do it. Then one day my Rashad's mom caught a bunch of us at his house on a very white January school day and kicked us out, Rashad told his mother he was suspended so he stayed home , she kicked the rest of us out. Later that day Rashad told me his mom found out we were smoking so he told me I should stop to , so I did. Later I found out he lied to me just to get me to stop smoking , And I thank him for that and opened my eyes and now I hate smokers or people who call me a smoker. Rashad and Ricky smoked every day , some times 2-4 times being in Rashads room listening to Dipset, or old skool rap and hip hop. But mostly instrumentals and they thought they were good at rapping -_- . The two eventually stopped coming to school , or come once a week or two. All of the potheads thought Rashad was the same kid they met as a pothead. All the people who REALLY knew Rashad noticed how much he has changed and miss that old kid. He used to be a fun loving , funny , adventurous , girl getting , silly guy. Now he's quiet , stays home all day playing xbox 360 , doesn't really hit us up to hang out, I picture him as being one of those kids from the above the influence commercials where they're sitting in a chair deflated . We invited him to Six Flags hoping he'll get some life back into him. And we thought there was no hope for him after... He would ALWAYS *** ask my last best friend , now #1 best friend Danny for his ipod whenever we would travel to places but that day he didn't ask, he starred out the window and was quiet. We got on the new ride Bizzaro (great ride =D ) and his response was "it's alright" and we were so shocked. Last year I went to Six Flags with Rashad and he was scared to get on rides but still did it and when we were on El Toro he said "I wanna get off I wanna get off I wanna get off ...OHH SH*TTTTTTTTTT" But this year he got on with no hesitation. He's lost a lot of emotion. Recently , he has shown some improvements. He's written to me on AIM , we talk a little , Danny and I see he's getting some what of his sense of humor back. We don't wanna tell him hes changed because even though theres a possibility he might see that hes changed and try to go back to how he was , he might also just feel bad about himself. I know the real Rashad has to been in there somewhere , Danny and I will be trying our best to get him back into shape (the "munchies" left the poor skinny boy a gut" and get him more active. But we need a lot of time to work on him. As for Ricky, Rashad's mother doesn't like him anymore and thinks hes a theif because the two robbed this girl for her laptop and as a result , she stole Rashad's phone and now our school has it and Rashad still hasn't got it back (knowing the school system , they probably lost it) And Rashad has done little to nothing about getting it back. Well back to Ricky , Danny and I see no change in him , maybe for the fact that he stopped hanging out with us before when we used to joke on him a lot and he found a new group of friends to hang out with and he smoked with them a lot, maybe his result from that was a more upgraded sex fiend. Ricky has smoked A LOT more weed than Rashad will EVER consume. But Rashad ended up a burn out, and Ricky ended up leaving to Florida last weekend. Who knows if he will return. But I made this because I really need help on trying to fix Rashad and get him back to the way he once was.The reason for the novel is to let you guys know the situation. Please someone gimme good advice on trying to get my friend back... moreResolved Question: Finding out what you wanna do.?
Me, my friends and I guess alot of other people are going through this right now. Everyone asks the question sometime "So, what do you want to do with your life? What do you wanna be when you grow up? What career path you aiming for? What do you wanna do?" I have heard many answers to this: "Follow your heart. Go travelling. Do what you like doing generally. Join the army. Start by picking the most disgusting job possible and then tick off a deduction list. Start your own company. Find a steady income job. Take career tests. Do voluteer work. See a guidance counselor." And so on. Now, I've grappeled with all of these and more, trying to find what kind of work would give me the thought of "Damn, I'm glad I'm getting out of bed to go to work today." etc. Now, I'd like to know, how do you deal with this issue? What have you done to find your "perfect" job, if anything can be called that. I have friends that say that it isn't really different from high school and college, having a job. Your enslaved for the rest of your life to earn a living. I have other friends who absolutely love their jobs and would not dream of doing anything else. So, theres probably quite a few other people wondering about this very same question. What are your answers? moreResolved Question: Y&R actor/character OUT!?

Here it is. Give it a read and let me know what you think before I click "submit"! By the way, I'm applying as a transfer student. I also have to type out a brief rationale for my desire to transfer. ___________________ Developing in my conscience, has been the growing need to discover myself. Throughout the test of time, there has been an overwhelming attraction for those who write passionately. By not garnering much intrigue in prominent educational programs such as business, one may wonder how to properly induce a sufficient income in these turmultous economic times. Standard advice such as "do something you love for the rest of your life" is not overly practical when financial means must be met. When merely mentioning the prospects of majoring in English, parents and peers alike conjure thoughts of a feeble, desperate man sitting in a Starbucks cafe aimlessly typing his hopeless stories. However, there is more optimism to be had when pursuing a degree in the field of English. In order to convey this message to my elders, the terms "freelance writing" and "author" had to immediately be discarded, and in its place, communication. For one to fully complete the coursework designated in an English focus, communication would be of utmost importance, and can be applied to virtually any occupation. Ultimately, this is what sparked great interest for me and my decision to relentlessly aim for this particular degree at UMass Amherst. All of us prefer to be well rounded, versed in countless fields and prepared for any daunting challenges that may emerge. I'm ready to conquer these challenges. I'm ready to undertake every plausible task that may be on the way in college, and then some. Despite initially displeasing those encompassing me with the possibility of a career geared towards writing, persistent desire has allowed me to maintain my aspirations and breach past other's visions of what should be done with my life. Given that my father possesses an accounting degree and has devoted the majority of his life to business, it was certainly difficult to envision me chasing anything else. While observing a parent consistently raking in a high income and performing a job that comes relatively easy; one still has to stray away from that particular comfort zone. To follow in a father's footsteps is the easy way out of an otherwise ongoing dilemma. Conventional wisdom states to emulate what is successful, and while accounting isn't too complex a concept, it is unquestionably an occupation that doesn't derive much intrigue personally. Plagued by the societal pressures of attaining financial stability, the business field is the safe route. Surely however, business is arguably not the most stable of roads to take in a floundering economy. In order to break out so to speak, and to accomplish a significant sense of individuality, one must adhere by the cliche and utilize the path less travelled. Crafting one's own identity, is essential in transcending life from a potential success, to a proven success. Through writing, one can hope that this vision, becomes a reality.I was worried it was a bit generic, yes. Thank you answer #2. moreVoting Question: Future career/ major choices?
So I'm gonna be a freshman in college this fall and I'm currently signed up as an English and Sociology double major. I was in a program in high school that allowed me to take high school classes half the day and college classes the other half. Due to this, I have so many of my general education credits out of the way that after my first semester of freshman year, I'll have to start taking my major classes, so I have to figure out what I want to major in pretty quick. English and Sociology are the two subjects I'm most interested in, but they're both majors that don't allow a lot of job options. So what majors are there out there that can land me a steady job (doesn't have to be high-paying, just steady) and incorporate these interests: 1. Writing. Whether creative, informative, or investigative. 2. Music. I produce music in my free time for my friend's band and another dude's rap group. I like to think I'm relatively good at it and it's what I enjoy most, however it isn't the kind of thing that guarantees a career. 3. Film. I love writing scripts and also shooting documentaries. 4. Helping others. 5. Preferably something where I can call the shots a bit. Not that I have to be my own boss, but I'd like a job where I have some freedom in what I do, not just following orders all day. 6. Being active. A job that requires travel or requires me to be up and moving during the day. I can't imagine having a 9 to 5 cubicle job. Obviously I'm not aiming for a dream job that incorporates ALL of those things. But at least one or two should suit me. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. moreResolved Question: What to play next (piano)?
I've trying to figure out what piece to take on next. I usually play lengthier pieces (5+ minutes), but recently I've just been playing shorter, easier pieces while my teacher and I look for what to play next. I'm in high school, but I also do competitive track and travel, so we're looking for a lengthy piece that I can work on for one school semester- we're aiming to just do two big pieces a year, and just slip in however many smaller pieces when we want. So, does anyone have any pieces in mind? I'd prefer it being a piano solo, but concertos are okay, although I'd probably just take on one movement for a semester then. I like the Romantic era pieces over classical- ones with a lot of moving notes. Kind of mushy gushy, "heart wrenching" stuff, or the fast, crazy ones. Any suggestions? Also, I've been playing piano for 11 years, so I'm looking for a piece that'll give me a bit of a challenge. I've already played lots of classical sonatas, Schubert's Impromptu #2, Mendehlssohn's Rondo Cappricioso, and many of the Chopin waltzes and his Scherzo #2 (the last four things I named, I really enjoyed playing). moreResolved Question: Can YOU answer these riddles?

Aloha, 'Star Wars' - Obama Bluffs on Defending Hawaii Monday, June 29, 2009 July 4 could be another day that will live in infamy. The Obama administration seized headlines June 18 when the Defense Department stated that the United States would deploy ground- and sea-based missile-defense assets to protect Hawaii. This was a response to North Korea's threat to launch a long-range missile on July 4 toward the islands. However, new information suggests that the administration is bluffing and our defenses are inadequate to get the job done. Missile-defense expert Taylor Dinerman told us that the sea-based SM-3 missiles now deployed to "protect" Hawaii are not equipped with adequate software and communications to intercept a missile traveling from North Korea to Hawaii, which would reach a terminal velocity of Mach 23 to 25. The SM-3s are effective only against targets traveling at up to half that speed. It would take about $50 million to upgrade the software to enable a Mach 25 intercept. The Army's Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile, which also has been activated after successful tests at Barking Sands on Kauai, "doesn't come close" to being effective against this type of threat, Mr. Dinerman said. The Obama administration is stuck in the past on missile defense, repeating worn-out arguments about unproven technologies and destabilizing effects. The Defense Department's 2010 budget proposal cut missile defense by $1.2 billion, and congressional Democrats rebuffed Republican attempts to restore the funding. Justification for the cuts was led by Rep. Ellen O. Tauscher, California Democrat, who is the newly confirmed undersecretary of state for arms control and international security. Ms. Tauscher will play a major role in missile-defense policy. The cuts include scaling back the number of interceptors based at Fort Greely, Alaska, from 44 to 30. This cut is hard to justify given the proximity to North Korea and the fact that these interceptors actually could bring down one of its missiles (which may explain why Pyongyang is aiming for Hawaii). The Airborne Laser program has been downgraded to a research-and-development effort despite a recent successful test of its target-acquisition system. Taxpayers have invested about $5 billion to bring this advanced technology to the point of fruition. The Obama administration also has cut funding for the European missile-defense shield, leaving our allies in Poland and the Czech Republic in the lurch after they took a major political risk to support the program. A February Congressional Budget Office study of the proposed European deployment concluded that "none of the alternatives considered by CBO provide as much additional defense of the United States." This retreat makes the United States appear weak before Russian bluster, which doesn't put U.S. leaders on the best footing on the eve of a July 7 Washington-Moscow summit. Missile defense should be central to the U.S. strategy to dissuade, deter and, if necessary, defeat threats. Instead, we are unilaterally disarming, which only strengthens the strategic logic for our adversaries to produce more missiles. Current policies encourage countries like North Korea, Iran and Syria to move ahead with advanced missile and weapons-of-mass-destruction programs that promise more bang for the buck than expensive conventional forces. The Obama administration's hostility to missile defense is inexplicable. The missile threat is growing, and defensive technology is increasingly effective, yet the Obama team has dug in stubbornly behind a losing strategy that emboldens our enemies and places us in greater danger. No wonder Hawaiians are nervous. Copyright 2009 The Washington Times, LLC http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/jun/29/aloha-star-wars/ moreResolved Question: Who has any tips for me?
Going to community college, I decided to aim for a high career. Majoring in Biology, I was looking into becoming a Doctor, a Pharmacist, or a Medical Lab Technician. Fulfilling all of the lower division requirements at a community college would have taken me a long time. Because of personal problems, getting there was going to take me a maximum of 4 years-- that's just to transfer to get to my Bachelors. At the time, I really didn't care how long it was going to take me because it would have paid off. In school, I talked my friends and professors about my goals. I had a plan; I had everything set. I am good in courses that are geared toward Biology majors; that's why I inquired a career in Life Sciences; also, it's high in demand. I enrolled in classes that are lower division requirements for Bio majors at UC Berkeley for my second year in community college. However, I dropped my all my science classes and changed my plan. Being one of the few people that are very talkative, and intellectual, I do know what I want to do and to get there. I know a lot about colleges, and have been told many times that I was of great help when asked for assistance; also, I been told I am better counselor than ones at high schools. I really love planning schedules, and knowing what's needed to get to a certain point. Before I finished high school, I had an educational plan- that I did on my own- for 3 years at a community college. Once I actually began my classes, and went to see a counselor, he was surprised that I, a student coming straight out of high school, knew the works of community college and how to successfully transfer to a 4 year university. Because I really love socializing and interacting with people, I want to have a career that lets me socialize, network, and travel. I’m not boring, that’s for sure; I am a very outgoing and an adventurous gay guy. I think I was only looking into the medical field because I didn’t want to be stereotypically aiming towards a career that most gay guys are well known for, which they are most likely good at; careers mainly in the high fashion industry. I probably seem funny because of what I am saying. I’m really stereotyping, and many people would say that gay people are everywhere, which I greatly agree. Being gay, I feel that I would be successful working with a career well known in Hollywood or the Los Angeles area. I am not sure what I mean by that, but I know going to the medical field, or anywhere with a degree in Biology is not for me. I've recently decided to major in Sociology. I know it seems like a ticket way out for an easy college degree, but I do love it. I really see myself as a Sociologist. I like to observe people on how they interact with one another and function in society. I remembered before I took a Sociology class, I told a friend that most people decide to major in Sociology after getting introduced to it. I, however said that I would never be drawn towards it nor major in it. After taking my first sociology class, I still didn’t think of majoring in it, well not yet. I had a lot of internal conflict deciding on what I wanted to do. Luckily my sister supports me all the way. She told me that she didn’t see my as a Doctor, or in the medical field whatsoever. That didn’t affect me at all because she also said that she knows I can make it to be a Doctor if I aimed towards that pathway, which I also believe. It's not that sweet stuff you expect from your family. She also agreed that I would be more happy and better off in a job that’s fun, and gets me to be involved with many people that interact with tons more people, and network. I still want to transfer to UC Berkeley for my school of choice, and the best thing of all is I can apply for admission this Fall, 2009 to be considered a Junior for Fall, 2010. I will be 19 going on 20 when I attend UC Berkeley, so I will be on schedule with timing as far as being in school for 4 years. I still have doubts that I won’t be successful on this new pathway I choose, but I have a great friend, who greatly believes I can make it and family of course that I will be successful. Also, I feel like I am competing for a career I am still not sure of with millions of gay people. If I keep on believing that I can make it in any path I choose, then I know that my goals and aspirations would be near, and a dream come true. moreResolved Question: Someone explain the current overseas issues?

Dick Morris - The Death of Israel Sunday, May 24, 2009 5:31 By: Dick Morris & Eileen McGann From Caroline Glick, deputy editor and op-ed writer for the Jerusalem Post, comes alarming news. An expert on Arab-Israeli relations with excellent sources deep inside Netanyahu's government, she reports that CIA chief Leon Panetta recently took time out from his day job (feuding with Nancy Pelosi) to travel to Israel to "read the riot act" to the government warning against an attack on Iran. More ominously, Glick reports (likely from sources high up in the Israeli government) that the Obama administration has all but accepted as irreversible and unavoidable fact that Iran will soon develop nuclear weapons. She writes, "...we have learned that the [Obama] administration has made its peace with Iran's nuclear aspirations. Senior administration officials acknowledge as much in off-record briefings. It is true, they say, that Iran may exploit its future talks with the US to run down the clock before they test a nuclear weapon. But, they add, if that happens, the U.S. will simply have to live with a nuclear-armed mullocracy." She goes on to write that the Obama administration is desperate to stop Israel from attacking Iran writing that "as far as the [Obama] administration is concerned, if Israel could just leave Iran's nuclear installations alone, Iran would behave itself." She notes that American officials would regard any harm to American interests that flowed from an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities as Israel's doing, not Iran's. In classic Stockholm Syndrome fashion, the Obama administration is empathizing more with the Iranian leaders who are holding Israel hostage than with the nation that may be wiped off the map if Iran acquires the bomb. Obama's end-of-the-year deadline for Iranian talks aimed at stopping its progress toward nuclear weapons is just window dressing without the threat of military action. As Metternich wrote, "diplomacy without force is like music without instruments." By warning only of possible strengthening of economic sanctions if the talks do not progress, Obama is making an empty threat. The sanctions will likely have no effect because Russia and China will not let the United Nations act as it must if it is to deter Iranian nuclear weapons. All this means is that Israel's life is in danger. If Iran gets the bomb, it will use it to kill six million Jews. No threat of retaliation will make the slightest difference. One cannot deter a suicide bomber with the threat of death. Nor can one deter a theocracy bent on meriting admission to heaven and its virgins by one glorious act of violence. Iran would probably not launch the bomb itself, anyway, but would give it to its puppet terrorists to send to Israel so it could deny responsibility. Obama, bent on appeasement, would likely not retaliate with nuclear weapons. And Israel will be dead and gone. Those sunshine Jewish patriots who voted for Obama must realize that we, as Jews, are witnessing the possible end of Israel. We are in the same moral position as our ancestors were as they watched Hitler’s rise but did nothing to pressure their favorite liberal Democratic president, FDR, to take any real action to save them or even to let Jewish refugees into the country. If we remain complacent, we will have the same anguish at watching the destruction of Israel that our forebears had in witnessing the Holocaust. Because one thing is increasingly clear: Barack Obama is not about to lift a finger to stop Iran from developing the bomb. And neither is Hillary Clinton. Obama may have held the first White House seder, but he's not planning to spend next year in Jerusalem. © 2009 Dick Morris & Eileen McGann http://www.newsmax.com/morris/nuclear_iran_israel/2009/05/24/217793.html moreResolved Question: The death of Israel.........?

what do you think of this book i started writing. is it too boring and flat (ignore the grammar please) As the body hit the ground the blood flowed out of it like water going out a drain. The body now no more than an empty shell lay still. The soul came out of the corpse first, zooming up to the sky, not paying attention to its killer desperate to get beyond this life. Then came the power slowly but confused as if it had a mind of its own. Before it shot up into the air like a bullet the killer absorbed it, growing stronger by the second. Gazing down at the thing that had once been a mage, the killer say that nothing else was coming out. Leaving the thing to rot the killer walked away in search of his next victim. Chapter 1 “Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to the 20017 annual fighting contest, sponsored by R.T.L industries”. Said a voice through the large speakers that were floating in the air. So far we have thirty eight contestants signed up for a chance to compete and win the amazing prize of three thousand euros. Any late entries please make your way to office now, and that was were I made my way to the office. I had been late due to traffic but had made it with time to sign up. But of course there just had to be a long line of last minute entries. Most of them probably would never make it past the first round. So like any other person in a hurry I didn’t bother joining it. I just skipped the line and walked to the top of the cue slipping in front of some girl wearing a incredibly long leather cloak. “Excuse me” she said in a angry voice. “yes” I said turning around to face her. “there is a line” she said pointing to the rest of the people behind her. “I Know and I’m in it” I said showing her my detective badge. That shut her up and she looking away from me. “Next” called the women sitting down at the desk. I walked up to the desk. “Name she asked looking down at a forum ready to start writing down my details. “Detective Mathew Storm” I said. That got her attention. “Age” she asked “twenty one”. She looked up with surprise on her face and asked to see my badge. Usually it took twelve years to become a detective including college and tests. Which made most detectives in there early thirties when they started. Since I was a detective I didn’t have to give out all my details when entering a contest like this. “Number forty three” she said. So I went and took a seat waiting to be called. I had taken three weeks holiday for this contest. Last year I would never have taken a vacation like this but when you hear that your best friend was murdered makes you think about your life. Before I would work seven day a week never getting taking a break. But now I was more relaxed. I worked part time and spend my days off duty travelling and entering magical contests like this one. Chapter 2 “Number forty three please come to the field.” the voice in the speakers called out. I got up and after a long wait walked down to the field to compete in round 1”. The field was a massive stage that was the size of a Olympic swimming pool, surrounded by thousands of seats so spectators could watch. I walked up to the security guard and show him my ticket proving that I was contestant forty three. “please leave any communication equipment and fragile belongings in that this box” he said. I entered the field and faced the current champion. He was a tall bald man who reminded me of a Buddhist monk. “Begin” shouted “the guard. As a higher level mage the match would be over soon. My opponent threw a couple of fire ball at me which I quickly dodged with ease not needing to you any power yet, which got him angry. He set a ring of fire around me. I levitated in the air and conjured a dagger flinging it at him aiming at his leg were is would not kill him. It struck him at he screamed in pain ripping it out at flinging it right back at me like a frisbee. It struck hard hitting me in my stomach. With so much pain ripping through my leg, losing my concentration on levitating I dropped to the ground. My opponent shouted with joy as he thought I was dieing and he had won. Little did he know that my body was regenerating, healing the damage he had done to my stomach and naturally stitching up the skin. When the healing was done he was still cheering at the crowd not bothering to look in my direction. I conjured up a sword and drove in into his stomach.. He dropped down and shadowed out of the field, making me the rightful winner at sending me to the finals.what part of it do you's recommend cutting down ??it's a mix between a murder mystery and action adventure moreResolved Question: help me to correst this article and this report please!?

This article is very interesting. If I were to tell someone about it, how could I give them a summary in two sentences? (Basically, what are the two main ideas of this article) ------ On Cuba, Obama and Castro Trade Signals About Talks (By Thomas Omestad) In a surprising and quick response to President Obama's policy moves, Cuban President Raúl Castro is offering to talk directly with the U.S. government about an array of sensitive subjects, including human rights, freedom of the press, and political prisoners. Castro responded just hours after Obama, on a visit to Mexico City, said that it was up to Havana to take the next step after Washington's move to end restrictions on Cuban-Americans traveling to and sending money to relatives on the island. The Cuban leader, professing an open mind on talks as long as Cuba is treated as an equal with the right to self determination, said that "we have sent word to the U.S. government, in private and in public, that we are willing to discuss everything." Raúl Castro, the brother of ailing former President Fidel Castro, has said in the past that he would be willing to meet with Obama for talks in a neutral place and would respond to U.S. actions to improve relations "gesture for gesture." His rapid response to Obama, coming just before the start of a 34-nation Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago, may be aimed at keeping up the pressure from other Latin American nations on Washington to ease its hard-line Cuban policy, which still includes an economic embargo and a ban on general travel. Castro's move likely also reflects his smooth assumption of power, which was formalized in February 2008. He has been putting his own stamp on the Cuban power structure, including firing prominent cabinet members and ordering modest economic reforms. Obama is personally popular with Cubans, who have high hopes that some improvement can be made in a tense, Cold War-style relationship that has endured for a half a century. Castro, who has seemed more attentive to popular sentiments and discontents than was his brother, may feel an incentive to show that he is willing to be responsive to Obama, at least in principle. Obama this week called on Cuba to respond with steps "grounded in respect for human rights," a reference to Havana's jailing of political prisoners and lack of political freedoms. But U.S. officials have also said that a broader policy review on Cuba continues, opening the possibility of further steps to generate direct talks with the Communist government. moreResolved Question: Is it easy to travel a lot if you are planning on going to a good college?

Ever since I was a child, I had always dreamed of being a real mathematician, and at the time present, I still believe that it is important for me to get the satisfaction of knowing I have succeeded by myself, therefore, I would like to gain deeper theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the various fields of mathematics, and to hone my skills that will help me take a giant step towards reaching my professional goals. I am excited by the opportunity to join a professional team where I can improve my scientific background. In regard to my extracurricular activities, I like playing football, chess, reading and traveling. I am motivated and curious person who can easily adapt to any situation. Finally, I strongly wish to participate in this programme to open my path, to do research and to be my springboard towards my goals. sincerely hope that my qualifications will meet your high requirements. faithfully XXthanks, Jordan B! moreResolved Question: Ok, I Need Some Info on Tokyo and Other Japanese Cities?
I'm 13 and I have always loved Japan. I lived in Okinawa for three years and will forever cherish them. Its been my life goal to one day live in Tokyo. So i need some advice, what should I start doing this young to achieve my goal. I want to have a career that involves Journalism, Photography, Travel, or Writing. Are there any of these available to Americans in Osaka, Tokyo, Nagoya, Yokohama, or Fukuoka? If I live in Tokyo, I want to live in either the Shibuya or Shinjuku areas. Where are some cheap apartments? My friend wants to live with me, so it has to be an afordable 2 room apartment. Unfortunately, my high school does not offer japanese, but I have the rosetta stone. Has anyone learned japanese through rosetta stone? What city do you recomend me aiming to live in. i love Tokyo, its my favorite place in the world. Thanks! If you need any more info, just ask! moreResolved Question: Travelling around Europe solo at the age of 17?
Hi, I've just finished high school and am currently on my gap year (live in Australia) and I'm actually only turning 17 in April. Right now I'm working to save up some money, and my ultimate aim is to go travelling through Europe later in the year. Do you think 17 is too young to go solo? I have family in Germany so I'll stay with them for awhile, and I might meet up with some friends for short periods, but practically everyone I know went straight on to uni, so i'm left by myself. Am v. mature, and have been looking at group tours, but they all have a min age of 18 (ahhhh!) What do you think? moreResolved Question: What about this latest poem I wrote?
