Resolved Question: Is this a lame idea for a short story?

I have to write one in my English class, and we're working on it for the next few weeks. I don't really know why we are doing it, but yeah. My teacher gave us a list of "ingredients" for our stories that we can use, based on the story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London. Here's the idea: A man is traveling away from his camp in Ontario, where it is at the peak of winter, and it's quite cold out (like 40 degrees below, according to my teacher's guidelines). At first, we don't really know why he's traveling, but we later find out that he plans on faking an "accident" to cover up his suicide. He's going to travel out and freeze to death willingly, and he wants to pass it off as an accident so that his friends/family won't feel guilty when he's gone. I'm not really sure how it'll end, and if he'll actually succeed or not yet, but that's the rough idea. Is that lame? Also, I'm going to put hints into the story as to why he's killing himself, but I'm going to leave it vague. I want to leave it up to the reader to decide why he's doing it. But is that a bad idea, and is the reason for it something I SHOULD explain? more

Voting Question: G2 3 day suspension - blood alchol content section 48?

Last night i was on a highway 7 in vaughan ontario travelling at around 90 km/h in a 70km/h zone so i was pulled over to the side of the road and questioned why i was going so fast. i explained i had to drop my friend off quick because his mom was mad. then the officer procceded to ask my friend if he has drank any alchol tonight my friend replied as yes and i replied as no. he asked me to take a roadside breathalizer test witch i did after confronting himof the reason of this which he stated your a g2 license holder and your friend was un the influence. i proceeded to fail the test with a warning and he suspeneded my license for 3 days and called mymom to pick up the car. I was given a total payout of 110 dollars as a ticket. on the notice of suspension i would just like to note that under date of birth he had put yesturdays date and he also claimed the year was 2010 when it is a 2005 just in case it has any sisgnificance. i am 17 years old and a g2 license holder. i was also wondering what my insurance rates would be like if i kept the ticket or i decided to fight it ( I am currently paying $990 for secondary insurance) and i was also wondering if it was any points taken off my license. i am also wondering why he did not charge me for speeding when he said that i was speeding. and also i read on other forums that if i am confivicted(pay the fine) i will be subject to a 30 day suspension. i dont not wish to cheat the law i just want to figure this out. Thank you more

Resolved Question: How do I get to Quebec city from Toronto by transit?

I'm trying to cut down on traveling costs, I don't own a car and a taxi would just be horrendous to pay for. Voting Question: What is the thesis of this essay?

Rink Rage When the Delhi Legion peewees travelled down the highway to play the Port Dover Pirates back on Feb. 25, there was a fair bit on the line for both teams. The series winners would advance to the semifinals of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association's AE Peewee playoffs. And local bragging rights were at stake -- there is a long-standing rivalry between teams from Delhi, a town of 3,900 that claims to be the heart of Ontario's tobacco belt, and Port Dover, 26 km to the southwest on Lake Erie, which boasts it's the world's largest freshwater fishing port. So about 200 parents and fans crowded into the arena in Port Dover and arranged themselves in the stands according to their community affiliation. It was typical of peewee games at that level -- 12- and 13-year-olds a notch above house league -- enthusiastic if not always polished. Early on, the Pirates won most of the battles along the boards, and took the lead as well. The action got progressively rougher. Several Delhi supporters began hollering at the two referees to crack down on what they saw as the Pirates' overly aggressive body checking, and in fact, Port Dover incurred most of the penalties. That didn't satisfy some Delhi supporters. With five minutes left, when a Delhi player was penalized for hitting from behind, both of Delhi's coaches strenuously argued the call and were ejected. That provoked a couple of hotheaded fans, who hurled coins and a plastic water bottle onto the ice. Finally, with one minute and 38 seconds to go and Port Dover up 2-0, one particularly loud Delhi fan tossed a broom onto the ice. That was it for the officials. They halted play and, unable to identify exactly who the main offenders were, simply ejected all 200 spectators. The local provincial police detachment sent officers to protect the referees as they left the arena. On the ice, the players were stunned by what they heard and saw coming out of the stands. "You don't pay attention to that stuff usually, but a couple of people in the stands were getting real mad at the refs," says Pirate defenceman Colton Organ, 13. When the broom hit the ice, Organ says, "we all just kind of looked at each other and shook our heads." The majority of fans did the same. It was, as one of the more composed Delhi parents said afterwards, "embarrassing." No kidding. It was just a peewee hockey game, for crying out loud. It was supposed to be fun, yet it deteriorated into yet another recent example of out-of-control adults ruining their own kids' games. The bad behaviour is so common in hockey that it even has its own name -- rink rage. In recent months, some B.C. referees boycotted youth games to protest abuse from fans. A coach in Quebec was hospitalized after being attacked between periods by the father of one of his players. In Ontario, a coach was charged with threatening to kill a teenage referee. Last week in Winnipeg, a police constable -- already suspended from the force for a previous assault conviction -- was arrested and charged with threatening another parent during his nine-year-old son's hockey game. And the worst news is that rink rage isn't confined to the rink. Similarly ill-tempered adults can be found spoiling kids' enjoyment of youth soccer, basketball, baseball and football games, among others. The offenders are few -- the vast majority of parents are supportive of their kids without being disrespectful of coaches, referees or other fans. And extreme behaviour is rare. There are tens of thousands of kids' games played every year in a variety of sports, and referees and sports associations contacted by Maclean's estimate that they are forced to eject spectators perhaps one per cent of the time. "Most of us just come out to support our kids," Delhi fan David Edmonds said about the incident in Port Dover. "It's too bad, really, because it's just a couple of people making the rest of us look bad." While their shrill heckling may not always be profane or abusive enough to cause ejection, it poisons the atmosphere and drives volunteer coaches and low-paid referees out of the game. The Canadian Hockey Association says harassment is a major cause of attrition among referees, about 30 per cent of whom quit every season. In soccer, it's just about as bad: Manitoba soccer officials say that two-thirds of new referees recruited and trained in the province leave by the end of their first year. Not that there weren't leather-lunged louts in the good old days. But experts say hostile behaviour at youth games is far more pervasive -- and sometimes violent -- than it was a generation ago. Consider what happened last summer at a children's recreational hockey practice in Reading, Mass., north of Boston. One player's father was so abusive to the man supervising a pick-up game that the arena staff asked the father to leave the building. But the man, 42-year-old Thomas Junta, came back to confront the volunteer supervisor, 40-year-old Michael Costin. The hulking Junta, six-f more

Resolved Question: How should I approach this? (Help, parents?)?

Sort of a long story. Only read if you've got a coffee and some time on your hands. So I'm fifteen. I love learning, and more importantly, I love travelling. My whole life I've interrogated my parents about taking a trip to Ottawa, Ontario to visit my aunt. I spent endless hours reading books about all the astonishing museums and monuments and historical lands marks; pretty much just forcing myself into misery, knowing that, regardless the amount of begging and tantrums, they'd never agree to let me go. In early 2009, they finally gave into my pleas and agreed that we would all go as a family. I had no idea how amazing it really was until I got there. It was everything I'd imagined and more. The nine hour car ride was definitely worth it. We stayed for a total of four days and three nights, and I had to admit... I didn't want to go. The town was so beautiful... there were so many stories to be told about its history that I'd never get the chance to hear. So I've recently conjured up a plan that just might be my ticket back. I got a part time job a few weeks ago as an office assistant... type thing. Not very good pay, but it's just enough to get me there. I want so badly to live with my aunt and attend Brookfield High School. I'm willing to pay for my own food and clothes, and am also looking into applying for a journalist job there. I'm just clueless as to how I could possibly convince them that I am mature and independent enough to do this. I've yet to speak to my aunt about it, but she told me that if I ever need a place to stay, her door is open. I'd really like to take advantage of that offer. As a parent, how would you want your son/daughter to ask you? And is there anything I can do that might prove my deserving of the privilege? Please help me. I want this more than anything on the planet. Thanks a ton. ~ ♥Cookcook. more

Voting Question: To become a painter.. (apprentice?)?

Hey! So I'm really interested in painting, I have a passion for it and would like to pursue my options with it. By painting I don't mean artistically (though that is fun too), but I mean painting rooms in houses, and staining decks etc. Currently I live in Ontario so I would prefer to know how it works here, but advice from anywhere is welcome, as I love to travel so if there is a trades school offering it in California, I'd be open to that as well. Thanks for your guys help! :) P.S. I'm qualified for it as I'm currently in University, so I have my highschool diploma and good grades and such. I do not have extensive experience, but have painted bedrooms and basements, as well as stained fences/decks/and sheds. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Parents: How do you calm your kids before travelling?

Yesterday my daughter was bouncing off the walls excited about our trip to Ontario and Quebec. We were supposed to fly out this morning, got up obscenely early, only to find when we got there that our flight was overbooked. So we took a bump and got vouchers and took the bribe of compensation and upgrade, and our flight's early tomorrow morning. I thought she'd be still excited, but no. She's terrified. I don't know if it's just that she's tired, but she has a lot of worries about flying now and keeps asking me what if it crashes. She's resting right now and I'm trying to think of how I can assuage her fears if she's still like this in the morning. Tips? She's flown many times before without problem, many of them a lot longer than the one we're on tomorrow, so I know it's not that she doesn't have experience. We're going one way or the other, but it will make it a lot easier day if she's not scared. more

Resolved Question: Tips on moving out of province with a one year old, what should I do?

I plan to move from Newfoundland, to Southern Ontario. I'll get better work there, so its a necessary move. I do not know a lot of people in the area. I have a daughter who will be 1 1/2 by the time of the move. We will have to travel either by air, or renting a UHaul. I've never driven a UHaul, nor do I have much experience navigating big cities, so that thought makes me nervous. However I'm equally dismayed at leaving so many of her belongings behind in Newfoundland (I can store them at my parents house, but she wouldn't have access to them). She has a bookshelf, tricycle, battery powered ride on toys, a ton of storage systems, a very nice custom toybox/chest, and a crib. I've worked very hard to buy her those things and now I'm moving and have no idea how to transport them. Maybe I should just sell them and use the money to try and buy similar items. I don't know. I know I want to make this move, but I'm very confused about how to do it. I need some kind of a plan. Advice, personal experience, and ideas all welcomed. So far i'm in the early stages of applying for jobs and checking out daycares in certian cities. The specific city i'm most interested in is Ottawa. more

Resolved Question: Can anyone recommend a good labrador retriever breeder in Ontario?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good labrador retriever breeder around the Toronto/Mississauga/Brampton area? I am willing to travel a maximum of 4-5 hours for a really good breeder. Why do you recommend this particular breeder? Were they helpful? Did they truly care about their dogs? Were they kind and easy to get along with? Around how much did they charge? Did they offer continuous support? Do you personally think that the breeder is a responsible and reputable breeder? Hopefully a breeder that is dedicated to the labrador breed. If you have any personal experience can you please add that in as well? I really appreciate all answers. Thanks so much! P.S. Please don't tell me about making sure I am ready for a dog. I already asked that question and thought it over for years. P.S.S. I also know about the animal shelters but I am just trying to find out more about breeders/ P.S.S.S. If you have had a really bad experience with a particular breeder please mention that so I know who to stay away from ! Thank you again ! more

Im Canadian and live Ontario if that helps. I looked at Toys R Us and they have them there but in a box you get 4 12inch rails.. Im looking for one straight bar. I know Ikea has them for 5 bucks but don't really wanna travel 2hrs to get one! LOL any other suggestions and if anyone used the Toys R Us ones and how did you like them?? more

Resolved Question: If anyone's interested...?

So I'm writing a novel...and this is the prologue. It's just supposed to introduce everything. Can you guys make comments (like what you like, what you don't, what you don't understand, what I should add, etc)? I need to know if it's clear enough and intriguing enough. Thanks! <3 before we began: Everyone’s life deserves to be written into a story. Including mine because seriously, I’ve worked so hard and struggled so much to get to where I am today yet I never seem to be completely satisfied. The thing is, nothing really tragic has ever happened to me or my family, nothing really novel-worthy. Sure, my grandfather died a couple years back (but we knew that it was gonna happen sooner or later so that was one of those “what the hay?” sort of situations. Only then, my mother would go “hay is for horses” and I would glare at her, resisting the urge to punch her in the lip). Hmm, oh yes, one time, someone shattered the window of our minivan which was parked in front of an apartment building when we were visiting friends (but we had car insurance…you know, that’s what car insurance is for, plus that situation only tells you how dangerous New York City can be at night). When I was in seventh grade, the doctor told my mom she had ovarian cysts (not that I even know anything about ovarian cysts except for that it made my mom incapable of having more babies…why my mom would want to have another baby? I don’t know) but they disappeared after she went on some sort of expensive medication. I really think that’s pretty much it; we’ve never been robbed, there’s never been unexpected deaths and/or losses of anyone special, and I’m pretty sure my parents aren’t bankrupt. See? Nothing dramatic, nothing exactly life altering. Nothing at all that would be interesting enough to make into a bestseller suspense novel. Or something of the sort. Most people who write about themselves have exciting lives and so doing something like going to their aunt's place up in London, Ontario less than three hundred twenty-five miles away wouldn’t be considered the biggest decision of their life. But I had never traveled more than a mile out of New York border so it was really a big step for me. When I packed my bags and boarded my train, I was happy. I was so glad that I was leaving my parents once and for all, that I could get away from the urbanness of New York. My parents were a little bit teary (well more of my mom) but it’s probably more because of the fact that I had decided to move to Canada instead of finishing high school at NY Prep (I know, the school name could not get anymore conceited) like they planned for their little genius daughter (I’m not even that smart) to do. Then they’d expect me to go to Harvard or something. I’m still a senior, yeah, but on top of finishing my last year in high school, my mom’s making me take college courses at the University of Western Ontario. It’s the only reason that convinced her to actually let me come here. College material stuff, baby. It’d be hard, but it was so worth getting outta the cruddy place. So I guess that the very last thing I expected was to reminisce over all the little memories in my life. The moment I stepped off that three hour train ride and saw my tall aunt waving at me with my little cousin, Sunny’s hand in hers, everything seemed perfect. My life was starting over. I didn’t see any of my future coming. Nor did I forsee falling in love. But sometimes, one time, you meet a person and with just one glance, you know the two of you are meant to be. Or so you think. At first. more

Resolved Question: I live in ontario and want to take a construction program in Vancouver?

I can't find much info on admission details and was also wondering what schools would be recommended. I would be staying near Richmond so travel time information would also be helpful. As far as admission goes I have only taken applied level courses in high school. Thanks for the help! more

Resolved Question: Places to visit in Canada with natural beauty?

I live in Toronto,Ontario, looking to go traveling with hopes of coping with my depression. Somewhere that has beautiful green grass, flowers and sunshine that stretches for miles,a calm and tranquil place i guess.A lake, ocean or river, maybe even on the coast..somewhere i could fish would be a nice bonus. I would prefer the trip whether by plane or train or bus be under 350$,thank you so much. more
