Resolved Question: An aspect of time travel few consider?

Let's say Sherman dials back Mr. Peabody's Way-Back Machine 1 Planck time (5.39x10^^-44 sec). What then? Would there be two of him occupying the same space? Would 100 lb, Sherman v1.0 suddenly weigh 200 lbs, have 4 eyes, 4 legs, 4 arms, ... etc. Would it violate the Pauli exclusion principle? (I'm guessing not on this last one.) How about 60 seconds. Where would Earth and Sherman v1.0 be? Would Sherman v2.0 also move in space? For time travel to work, would it necessitate the instantaneous transfer of the eigenstates of all the quantum elements to the selected time? To do otherwise, would one's matter be smeared out backwards across time? Just food for thought. Joe: Perzactly. I figured I'd get an answer like yours. It's difficult in YA to formulate a question of this nature and touch all bases, such as causality loops and multiple time lines (multiverse, whatever you want to call it). Still, there is one issue I don't see how you can avoid. Take the wormhole idea. You stand at the threshold then advance some arbitrary Δd, say 0.5 cm. Where are you, and when? You're obviously smart enough to know what I mean by that. I was referring to when I start to enter the wormhole. Part of my body is in st1 (space-time region), and part in st2, say half my brain (some would argue that would be an improvement). Is this a Zeno paradox, or a split personality? Maybe I'm missing something simple, but I can't see a way around this, no matter how it's done, wormhole, time machine, multiverse, whatever. Same goes for teleportation. Your "information without cause" problem reminded me of what I was thinking while watching Star Trek IV where Scotty wants to give the transparent aluminum formula to the Plexiglas guy. McCoy objects, and Scotty says, "How do we know he didn't invent the stuff?" I liked Star Trek because Roddenberry and the writers stayed mostly true to theory, but this gave me cerebral heartburn. I liked the hammer metaphor, except for one thing. When I, at T2, send it back, would it not go to a different me in a different T1, as you previously described. First they wouldn't post it, then they post it twice. Here's the rest: I don't know why this popped into mind, and I don't know quite how to express it, but time travel also seems to reek of chaosian anomalies to me. (Hey, did I just coin a new term?). Then again, maybe there's a strange attractor somewhere (and it would truly be strange) that makes it possible. OK, so as I go flitting about doing st-to-st transitions, am I a different me after each one? And, if so, am I the same me but different, or a different me but the same? After all, in one way or another, I'm reconstituted during each transition. Do I loose that which makes me uniquely me?  more

Resolved Question: Southern California: best places to have an outdoor wedding?

Hi all. My best friend just got engaged and she wants to have the wedding in Southern California (yay, for six hours of traveling for me ;P). . . Anyways, I was just curious if anyone knows of any nice places to have an outdoor or semi-outdoor wedding and or reception. We already looked into the Sherman Library and Gardens in Corona del Mar, but does anyone in the area have any other ideas? Thanks so much in advance!!! Em C: Good for you! She's not too fond of the beach look, but she likes country, classic, and all that other jazz. Both she and I agree that the Sherman Garden and Library is a possibility but they really limit the bride and groom's "personal touch". Catering and decorating comes with the $2,750.00 package. She's pretty indifferent to the price as we're doing most of the work ourselves down to the cake. So anything you got, please share!!! Thanks so much!!! And congrats!!!  more

Resolved Question: Is this a good review of Saving Private Ryan?

Whoa. Wow. These are but two words that describe the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan. The movie opens up with what i can only imagine is Ryan as a veteran (an an old one at that) visiting a cemetery that commemorates his fallen comrades from World War II. He finds a particular grave and collapses in front of it overwhelmed by his emotions. It quickly changes scenes to the D-Day operation on the beaches of Normandy. The weather is less than perfect and the mission pretty near impossible. Ryan (or whom ever Tom Hanks is) appears to be the leader or at the very least the person giving the orders. The infamous General William Tecumseh Sherman once stated "War is Hell". He was not far off the mark. The operation of D-Day as depicted in this movie shows us that. There is gruesomeness and gore all over the place and blood and dispatched (is that a word?) body parts are rampant. Whether it is the ally soldier looking for the missing part of his still bloody arm or the soldier who is still alive despite having most of his intestines lying beside him, this movie tries hard to recreate exactly what they thought that operation must have looked liked. One of the things that got my attention during this invasion of Normandy was whenever one of the soldiers was saved by his helmet he takes his helmet off to inspect it and dies from a shot to the head. After the early shock, the group of soldiers, that compose the first wave, make a break in the German defense. Meanwhile back in the states, it is discovered that three out of four brothers have perished. Two perished during the invasion of Normandy, one at Omaha and the other at Utah. The third brother perished died in New Guinea(north of Australia). The fourth brother's fate is uncertain. He (Ryan) had been dropped over Normandy as a paratrooper. His mother is about to receive the news about the deaths of his brothers. Knowing that the loss of one child, let alone three, is a terrible blow to any mother, General George C. Marshall decides to send a rescue unit after private Ryan. Captain Miller is assigned the task of finding the Private. Captain Miller (Hanks) recruits a few underlings and sets off to search for private Ryan. Their first lead is no good and they lose one of their men to a German sniper. After this unfortunate event they move on to a new American encampment where they find out that private Ryan is helping defend a bridge. The bridge is strategically important to the Americans and the Germans. On their way towards where they believe the private is located they decide to neutralize a machine gun. They do. In the skirmish the medic (Wade) who is traveling as part of their group is fatally wounded. Miller decides to have mercy on the lone German survivor and let him walk away and turn himself in to the first Allied forces he sees. This does not go well with his underlings and one in particular talks about how he disapproves the Captain's decision openly. He even goes as far as openly stating he wants to desert. Soon after that they find private Ryan. He is told about the situation and refuses to leave. He insists that although he understands that he is suppose to leave, he has an obligation to stand bye and protect the bridge at all costs. He says that there is no way he can dessert the only brothers he has left. Miller thinks it over and decides that he is right. Miller stays and concocts a plan to overtake the Germans. He calls his ingenious invention sticky bombs. You get a GI sock, put some sort of explosive in it, and then soak it up in axle grease(oil), then put a fuse on it, and finally stick it to what you want to blow up. Using this maneuver they are able to disable one tiger tank in the battle that ensues. The battle starts off well for the Americans but the tide starts to turn when they start to run out of ammunition and the German mechanical and numerical superiority starts to show. The American forces are forced to retreat across the bridge. They are diminishing in numbers and the Germans look poised for victory. But just when things look gloomiest for the United States forces, reinforcements show up and turn the tide for good in favor of the Americans. Captain Miller is fatally wounded in the battle by the same German he had previously been merciful to and set free. His dying words were to Private Ryan. He told him "James, earn this earn it. With that we move forward back to the scene at the cemetery where James (private Ryan) is on his knees at Captain Miller's grave reflecting on what Miller told him on that fateful day years ago. Overall I enjoyed this film by Steven Spielberg. The battle scenes seemed incredibly realistic and so well researched. I enjoyed how it showed all aspects of war, how on one hand it would have the everyday could be my last day so let's go out there and give it our all people and the war is not really for me people. I recommend it to everyone who enjoys watching war movies.  more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my history paper? Industrialization (1870-1896)?

Industrialization (1870-1896) A paragraph presenting the conflict from the perspective of labor A paragraph presenting the conflict from the perspective of business Labor thought businesses were a danger to America. They had too much power and too much power in politics. Laborers thought that corporations were creating a corrupt government. Corporations were bankrupting small companies because of lowering prices below market value. Laborers were angry with corporations and trusts. They wanted Congress to pass laws to limit the power of corporations. Laborer’s convinced congress to pass laws to limit corporation’s power. The first one was Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 which outlawed all conspiracies, contracts, or combinations designed to “restrain trade.” The oil family was broken into smaller companies such as Exxon, Chevron, Esso and others by the Supreme Court. This did not work too well though. Another act was passed by congress. The Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914 listed several illegal “restraints of trade”, prohibited false advertising; corporations offering big discounts and pricing things before market price. That is the major reason how small companies were bankrupted. This limited the power of corporations. Business believed that a capitalist system would be good for everyone. The Laborers disagreed because they thought it would corrupt the government. Business believed that large corporations and trusts would benefit the economy of America. This was true. They thought that transportation would benefit the economy which it did. Railroads reduced immensely reduced the traveling time.  more

Resolved Question: If you live in Sherman Oaks, CA what is the closest/quickest to get to, nicest, and most affordable beach?

I have been heading to Venice quite a bit, but traveling the 405 gets old quick. takes me 30ish minutes to get there, and usually near an hr to get back. If i can avoid it, it would be nice. I like the atmosphere at Venice though. Laid back, and not pretentious. Santa Monica is alright but I hate having to spend 5-12 bucks just to park to lounge aroun at the beach. So yes I'm being CHEAP too haha. Sorry, just moved here and on a limited budget for a short time. Any suggestions from anyone would be great! Or if you know that where I'm heading fits the criteria of what I'm looking for, then so be it, just let me know :)  more
