Train Travel A Questions asked

Open Question: Should the export of horses for slaughter and the sale of horse meat be banned?

More horses sent abroad for slaughter after ban A record 78,000 were sent to Canada and Mexico, up 138 percent from 2006 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27934125/ This issue brings up images of people killing pets, but the eating of horse meat is a practice still carried on at many Indian reservations. Less than 100 years ago, before cars took over the land, horses were used for work, travel, and food by men traveling in areas that were still considered the America wilderness. Saltpeter cured horse meat was served to our soldiers in WWI. One thing to consider with the possible overpopulation of horses. The flu pandemic of WWI is believed to be a cross over virus from horses. Horse manure was burned to heat military basic training barracks, which is where the crossover took place. It was carried by our soldiers to Europe where it mutated into a more virulent form. More than half the soldiers sent to Europe died of it before ever seeing action. The reason it was called the Spanish Flu is because Spain violated the international ban on newspapers reporting on the flu because it would harm the moral of the soldier and those at home. Reporting on it during the war was considered an act of treason. If the horse population is allowed to grow uncontrolled, or we have to bury the nearly 80,000 horses a year, could this bring back that which the CDC most fears?  more

Open Question: comments/critiques on my UC personal statement?

PROMPT 1 The modern world is one in which happiness is defined by the amount of money and success one has. The job you have, the size of your house, the brand of the car you drive. My experiences in this world have left me without a definition of happiness. But of one thing I am certain: happiness does not consist of money and success; at least not for me. I was born in Ukraine, just west of Russia. When my parents immigrated to the United States, my mother wasted absolutely no time in signing me up for the best of every kind of school, class, and program she could find. In her eyes, the more opportunities and experiences I had, the more successful I would become. I have had numerous experiences throughout my life that over the years have come together to ultimately define who I am as a human being. I was born in Ukraine, and, for most people, when they think of Ukraine they think of poverty and farmland. And for the most part, they are absolutely right. It is a place with common ideals, one common religion, and common jobs. But my parents didn’t want me to have the life of a commoner, and, therefore, moved to America when I was four years old. My parents soon divorced which left me with just my mother. I was quickly enrolled in kindergarten, followed by elementary school and gymnastics. Like most kids, however, I preferred to stay home and watch television or be with my friends and would constantly beg her to let me quit. And every time I’d ask, I’d here the same answer,” no.” When it came time for middle school, my mother decided that public just wasn’t good enough. So she signed me up for Catholic School. By this time, she’d had me doing thirty hours of gymnastics a week, two hours of swimming, two hours of dance class, two hours of math class, and two hours of Russian school. I was up to my nose in activities, and I was blooming. I was turning thirteen and suddenly, I didn’t want to quit gymnastics. I began to live and breathe it. School and daily activities were now only there to kill time until practice. I had become attached to my coach, who by then I was seeing more often than my family. I was traveling at least once a month to compete, I was winning, and most importantly, I was happy. My world was finally whole, and there wasn’t a cloud on the horizon, until the San Francisco Invitationals of 2004. That’s the day I found out that my coach, my second mother and best friend in the world, was diagnosed with breast cancer. My perfect world tumbled down so fast, I didn’t get a chance to blink twice. I knew she was going to leave, and I knew I was going to quit. That notion made practice useless, and I started slacking. Something that had been defining my life for so many years was now gone. It was ruined because the greatest person I had ever known had cancer. I was angry and I took it out on everything. To me, it seemed as though I had been robbed of my identity. I was still very much in search of my identity when I stepped into High School the beginning of my Freshmen year. I didn’t know who I was, so I let other people define me. My grades were still down, and I was still lost. I was angry that my perfect world had been shattered, angry that I had been powerless against it. Happiness had suddenly lost all its meaning and I felt alone in the world. Then came two more hits to my already broken world: My coaches husband, who had traveled with us, coached me and was my second favorite person in the world, died of brain cancer. Shortly following that, my great-grandmother passed away. I was standing empty handed in the middle of a hurricane with nothing to protect myself. I felt like a zombie walking to and from school, and couldn’t understand why this was happening to me. That’s when I decided I was going to get out of there, whatever it took. My grades skyrocketed and I was determined. I finally had something to hold on to, some new goal to define my life with. This is my new dream. To get out of the city that harbors all these painful memories and to find success and finally be able to define happiness again, regardless of anyone else, even if I have to do it alone. Even a bird that flies solo has the power to soar. PROMPT 2 Right before I entered High School, my mother gave birth to my little brother. In the second semester of tenth grade, she had to leave to Glencoe, Georgia to train for her new job. She was gone for four months, four months of which I was a mother. I had to cancel plans to stay home and change diapers, feed and wash a little baby. I was 16 and taking on more responsibility than eighty percent of my age group. And all of this responsibility resting on the shoulders of a girl who had never even done a load of her own laundry or cooked breakfast. I had to learn, fast. There was no room for mistakes, and I knew it. For four months, grades once again started dropping as my priorities shifted. This was the experience of a lifetime, the experience every Health Ed class  more

Open Question: Transporting my mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving!?

Ok, here are the details: - I have to travel from Syracuse to Rochester via train, so about a total of 2.5 hrs (including driving to and from train stations, plus any delays). - I've got about 5-6 lbs of mashed potatoes - I may only have about 5 minutes to use a burner on the stove upon arrival - I'm not concerned about the heat of the potatoes, what I'm concerned about is the RE-heating. Question is, what would be the most effective way to re-heat them so that they're as delicious as if they were right off the stove? I use whole milk, fat free sour cream and light whipped country crock butter to make the potatoes. Should I bring any or all of these with me to make sure they're the proper consistency after re-heating?  more

Open Question: Do you think my long term boyfriend and i will stand the test of time?

I love my boyfriend, he's everything to me. I just wanted to get a outsiders opinion on how they think things will evolve. We have been dating for 11 months and we have only really fought over one issue. He would occasionally smoke weed, but when i found out he quit cold turkey and said he would not go back to his friends house (where he goes to do it). I asked him not to see this friend again and everything would be fine. three months ago he said he was missing his friend so i said ok well you should see him but no drugs, and i told him i will drug test him then next day if i suspect. He agreed and we were cool. I decided that unless i can go over there with him i dont want him going and agreed. Rather, i suggested we go hang out with mutual couples. He loved that idea, the couple we were hanging out with broke up!!! agh! So were back to him not seeing the friend. But things have changed this time around, i've shown him that im very appreciative of him not seeing this friend and he is happy to be making me happy. Whereas, last time when i told him not to see him, i continued to be paranoid about stuff. We both love each other so much and he is soo kind to me, he takes me out, buys me sweet gifts, does anything i ask and we get along on a friend basis too. He was interested in going into the Coast guard soon and i really encouraged it. We have talked about marriage and he said that when he gets back from basic training which is basically 7 months away that he will propose to me and i will travel with him while getting my degree online. We made that decision together so we are both happy about it. He is coming over to my house for Thanksgiving and i went to his families Thanksgiving. I just want to make sure our relationship lasts forever and i never want infidelity to come across my mind. What do you ppl think of our relationship?  more

Open Question: What is the cheapest way to fly to European cities?

I've never been to Europe before, but my fiancé and I would like to visit a few cities in different countries there. We also have little to no experience with flying. I've been searching for flight pricing, and it looks as though it costs about as much for a one-way ticket as it does for a return ticket in many situations. However, we would like to arrive in one country, travel by train, and depart from another country. Is there some way to work around this - to get round trip pricing while flying to and from completely different countries??  more

Open Question: What do you think of the first few chapters of my book? Cloud Nine?

Ok so I am writing a book (i am 13) and it is about three children that die and go to heaven, and are sent to find their father and bring him back. They first go to a place called Cloud Nine Angel Training to be angels, but are shortly taken to Heaven to find their dad. What do you think i could improve on with the first few chapters? Chapter One Thursday, September 16, 2008 5:23 PM Our old navy blue Chevy dragged itself down the highway, through the thick and sticky rush hour traffic. I glanced out the window, past all of the other equally slow moving cars in adjacent lanes to the trees on the other side of the road. In Pennsylvania, it seems like the only thing on the sides of roads are tall, dark trees .I longed for something more interesting to look at, after staring at trees for three hours straight traveling from New Jersey to Ohio for a family reunion. I will be happy to see my cousins once we get there, but so far, this drive is torture! I looked back into the mini van to find everyone besides me still occupied while I sat in the very back row next to my sister Alina doing nothing. The 14 year old was quietly reading a book, while my 16 year old brother Chase was finger-drumming to some heavy metal song on his iPod. Baby Tessa was asleep in her car seat, and of course, Mom had her eyes fixed tightly on the road. She was paranoid about driving ever since her dad went blind from a car accident when she was 10. I soon got bored again, so I began reading my book. It was a fantasy story about a magical Heaven. This place had angels, and everyone was super nice, and you never had to leave, or stay in the car for three hours. I wondered if that was where my dad was right then. Chapter Two Thursday, September 16, 2008 5:24 PM After reading less then one page, my mom mentioned that she knew a shortcut that her dad used to take that would cut the last 45 minutes to Ohio in half. She said she wanted our advice on whether or not to use it, but we obviously said yes. She reminded us once more to fasten our seatbelts, and we obediently assured her that for the fourth time, we had our seatbelts firmly in place. Then she continued talking about when we will turn onto this small exit, and when will we get to Ohio, and how the dang GPS system must be messed up, because there is no possible way to get to Ohio in less than 20 minutes. She started to lose her focus on the road. My mom’s mind has been wandering a lot ever since my super-healthy dad mysteriously died from a heart attack two years before, but she was usually like a hawk when a highway is within sight. I learned to ignore her and looked back out the window at the rows of trees, like tall guards looking out for us. I looked out the back window at the skinny silver Porsche behind us. I waved, but the strict-looking business man was talking to his Martha-Stewart-like wife. No one seemed to care that twelve year old Delaney Elliot was about to die of boredom in the back seat of a beat up navy blue Chevy. Just as my mom started to turn into the exit, something caught my eye. It was big. It was fast. And it was coming right at me. Chapter Three Thursday, September 16, 2008 5: 25 PM The entire car shifted to the left when the giant van hit us. The right side of our car was completely smashed in at least a foot and a half. I was closest to the impact, but Alina was right next to me, and Chase, directly in front. There was a shooting pain up my right arm, and Alina screamed with terror. My mom’s knuckles were as white as the whites of her blood-shot eyes. She looked like she was being lifted to the heavens, but she was the safest of all of us. Baby Tessa was crying like she never cried before. This was shrieks of fear, not wants or needs. I didn’t hear a sound from Chase; I did see his seatbelt hanging lifelessly on the side of his chair. I faintly remember being heaved out of the car, which had been crushed like a soda can. I was carried into an ambulance with doctors rushing around, putting needles in my arms and holding masks to my face. The only person I recognized was my mother, crying and scream at me. “Don’t leave me too! My baby! I need you, my baby!” I would’ve started crying if it didn’t hurt so much. I just closed my eyes and slowly felt the pain drip away. ohmigosh thanks to the person who said the thing about the baby! I JUST realized that!I guess I will have to make her about 3 or so. I wasn't really paying attention! Also, I will post the rest of the story in other questions (I am up to chapter 9 right now). This is the furthest I have ever gotten in a book I have written! Ha. I am posting another question with the next few chapters, but they are much longer. Keep checking my profile for my new questions!  more

Open Question: What do you think about this essay?

In the United States, thirty-nine percent of households own at least one dog, as well as nearly thirty-four percent of households own at least one cat. Sadly, not all owners take responsibility for these dogs and cats. Unfortunately, a great number of these animals are dropped off to fend for themselves. The ASPCA is one specific organization that has many volunteers that donate their time to help prevent animal abandonment and deliver adequate care for these neglected animals. Due to the vast number of unknown stray animals, statistics that give information about the actual number of drop offs are unreliable. A couple of the most common causes of animal abandonment are financial difficulty and no time for the animal. When an owner is financially strained, they are usually struggling with paying bills or dealing with losing a job. Being financially strained can lead to having an inadequate home for the animal. Also, when an owner is working hard to make a living, they could be traveling for extended periods of time or working long hours. In these specific situations, these owners may not have enough time to give their pets the care and love they deserve. As a result, the dogs and cats may end up being dropped off on the side of the road. Then the animals suffer more than they should until a local shelter or a caring person finds them. There are other reasons, too, such as animals’ behavioral and health issues. When an animal has a chronic illness, they must go to the vet. Most of the time, they require procedures and medication that cost an immense amount of money which may also become a bane to the owners. When an animal is experiencing anxiety or other issues, they may begin to deface the owner’s belongings. When an owner is struggling to train their pet, they occasionally give up and drop their animal off into the wild. To help reduce the number of abandoned animals, we should continue to raise awareness of the causes and realize the number of unknown strays that roam the country. Also, future owners should make sure they are willing to take on the responsibility of caring for an animal. It is impossible to house all animals humanely, but with the help of shelters and volunteers we can reduce the number of strays and raise the number of happily housed animals. There is simply not enough homes to care and love these innocent animals which have been abandoned  more

Open Question: what is life like in the navy. Please only answer if u are in or have been.?

Ive been considering joining the Navy afterr high school and I would like to know about life in the navy when your planning being active for four years. Some questions I have are what are the living conditions when you complete bootcamp and all the other training? Did u enjoy your experience you had in the Navy. With the GI bill it talks about would that ensure no matter what after I was done with my time get 100% of my education free in a situation if afterwards went to a two year community college than transfered to a four year university? Or can you get a college education while being enlisted? What are some of the perks of being in the Navy and also what are some of the downfalls of being in the Navy? Sorry about all the question I just want to be sure if this is what i really want to do. Open Question: What grade level is this paper?

I wrote this essay for school, and before I turn it in I would like to know if it is a good paper. What grade level do you think it is? Do you think it is good? My paper is on animal abandonment. In the United States of America, animal abandonment is caused by many different factors: financial difficulty, no time for the animal, animal’s health issues, behavioral issues, and an inadequate home. As Americans, we should strive to prevent and save these animals from being abandoned. The ASPCA is one specific organization that has many volunteers that donate their time to help prevent animal abandonment and deliver adequate care for these renounced animals. People do not realize that there are not any reliable statistics for the number of animals that are abandoned each year because the number is so vast. An estimate of dogs and cats entering the shelter each year is about six to eight million , but the most devastating part is that out of this substantial number, three to four million are euthanized. A couple of the most common causes of animal abandonment are financial difficulty and no time for the animal. When an owner is financially strained, they are usually struggling with paying medical bills or dealing with losing a job. Being financially strained can lead to having an inadequate home or dearth of food for the animal. Also, when an owner is working hard to make a living, they could be traveling for extended periods of time or working long hours. In these specific situations, these owners do not have enough time to give their pets the care and love they deserve. As a result, the dogs and cats end up being dropped off on the side of the road, and the animals suffer more than they should until a local shelter or a caring person finds them. There are other reasons, too, such as animals’ behavioral and health issues. When an animal has a chronic illness, they must go to the vet. Open Question: I received a proposal from a millionaire, what should I do?

I am the fifth daughter of Archdeacon Cowley of Little Missendell, Suffolk. I joined the army, and first worked in an officers' hospital, then drove successively a trade delivery van, a motor-lorry and a general! The last was the pleasantest. He was quite a young general! Next I entered a Government office, and enjoyed myself, but the Armistice intervened! I clung to the office with the true limpet touch for many long months, but, alas, I was combed out at last. Then I had hung out as long as I could. I had touted round. I had answered advertisements. I had tried every mortal blessed thing. I've screwed and saved and pinched! There weren't any jobs for me, for I knew nothing about business and was not trained to do anything. I thought about everything, and even told my friend Tom that I'd marry money, because I was not sentimental! Then we both got a government job, of a sorts, and met a man through this job, an American, a young, pleasant looking man, Julius P. Hersheimmer. He happened to be a millionaire! He came to England to find his cousin, Jane Finn, who travelled to here and disappeared here. I think I quite like him. Then, today, all of a sudden, Julius proposed to me! I said that it would be unfair to him, because I did not love him, but he said it was ok. He asked me to think it over until tomorrow. He said that he'd just love to give me a real, rattling good time. It was all very well to SAY things like "marrying for money" and so on, but a real girl would never do it, would she? What should I do?  more

Resolved Question: What is the best place to visit if I ever travel near you?

If I ever go to a place near you, what would be your recommendation, other than the known tourist traps? Any info is helpful, a hotel, a church, a small plaque, a mom and pap dinner or a fine restaurant, places to shop or even a good view. If you ever come to Portugal, I recommend the Church of S. Francisco, the fabulous beaches of the Algarve, and a trip in the Douro Train, that follows the wineries of the Douro valley. The surf is AWESOME!! I'm sure that the thing that would surprise you more is the feeling of safety, and the friendliness of the people. This is a great place to live.  more

Open Question: GPS / Navigator (Hand held) for CANADA?

I am planning to move to Canada in next couple of months so my techno adventurous instincts are kicking big time to buy a Hand held GPS / Navigator that can help me to find my ways in Canada. GPS / Navigator that I can use for City area commute, Trekking in mountains and wilderness etc. I believe that a GPS Device can pin point our location AND guide us to our desired destination through road maps – please correct me if I am wrong. I will mostly be traveling by foot, by buses, city trains etc. so need something that won’t let me get lost. Budget isn’t too big but I think I can afford reasonable quality. Don’t know anything about these gadgets so got few questions. 1. My budget is flexible but not too much. Looking for something that is solid, handy, durable, fast and accurate. Which company and model you guys will suggest? 2. Will there be any maps included in the GPS? 3. If yes then I buy a GPS from US (through internet) then will it come with Maps of Canada or not? 4. Or shall I buy it from Canada once I am there to avoid any problem? 5. Is there a way get new maps or upgrade the existing maps by connecting it to cell phone or computer etc.? Thanks.  more

Open Question: Getting to JFK from Brooklyn Heights?

I live in Brooklyn Heights and am flying out of JFK on a flight to San Francisco on a friday night at 6PM and coming back early monday morning at 7AM. I was going to take the A train to Howard Beach at maybe 2 or 3PM, but it occured to me that it will probably be very crowded at those times of the day. Is that true? I'm not overly familiar with the A-train, so I was just wondering if you think it would be impractical even traveling light (1 small suitcase and a carry on backpack) or if there's a better option... maybe a bus or I'll even take the LIRR to Jamaica from Flatbush Avenue and AirTrain from there.... I'd rather not take a cab though since they're expensive and I'd rather make use of my metrocard. Any ideas? Thanks!  more

Open Question: can someone give their opinion on this essay?

I would like to know someone's opinion on my college application essay, The question:We are a diverse and global community. Our students come from all parts of the globe and reflect many different cultural and religious heritages. How has your own heritage shaped you? What would other students learn from you and what do you look forward to learning from them? The answer: “Lord Rama traveled all the way to Lanka to save his beloved, Sita” are the words from a religious story my grandmother used to tell me when I was a three-year-old. It was one of many legendary stories in our religion. As the story ended with Lord Rama saving Sita from a demon called Ravanah, I discovered each and every story my grandmother, my mother or my father told me had a moral. While this particular story had a moral that told me not to give up other stories had morals like, “Lies never benefit anybody”. Every story I either heard or read gave me a new moral and something new to ponder. Ultimately, without realizing, the stories they used to tell me shaped my life; the morals they taught me were embedded in my mind in the form of these religious stories. These ancient Hindu stories are impacting my every action by giving me a conscience, one that was and still is trying to make me make the right decisions. As I was growing up I was introduced to a lot of religious holidays. Two of the few I most enjoyed were Sankranthi, a three day holiday intended for the farmers, and Diwali, a festival in which almost all of India used to light up firecrackers. I enjoyed them so much that, even as I moved into America, to get a better education, I celebrated them in some sort of way, usually by making a special meal we used to cook only on those holidays. I enjoyed celebrating them not because of the free day in my schedule but, because of the everlasting joy and the great memories they used to bring me. This joy from those holidays helped me in everything from my high school work to my willingness to do my chores. I had many experiences in my life while I was in India some that make me happy and some that make me upset. The thoughts that made me happy are filled with my friends and my family, while the thoughts that made me upset are filled with the struggles I have seen other people go through to even afford their basic necessities. By watching these struggles I realized the hard work one needs in order to succeed in his goal. I also realized the things that I take for granted, my new clothes, the food I am able to eat, are worth more than I think. This is moral that can help make this very world we live in become a better place. This is the moral I wish other people learn from me by listening to my experiences. I learned a lot from my experiences, mainly from the mistakes I made when I am starting to learn something new like, how I learned to ride my bicycle without training wheels from the many times I fell. These many experiences I had helped teach me what to do and what not to do. Another thing that helped me was listening to my friend’s mistakes and, if they made any, not making the same mistakes they did. As I continue to learn I know for a fact that sometime along the way I will commit some mistakes so, in odder to avoid making mistakes I look forward to learn about the many experiences of the students of University of Delaware and not commit if any the same mistakes they did.  more

Open Question: Is it safe for a woman to travel cross country alone on a Greyhound bus?

i live on the East Coast and am planning a cross country trip soon to Utah via Greyhound due to the cheap price. i also have the more expensive option of train or plane - but thought it might be fun to travel by bus. i'm not planning on staying in a hotel along the way - just a straight shot trip, solo. However, i know some Greyhound stops are in unsafe locales - but don't know what it would be like cross country. Also, worried about my belongings and falling asleep and missing a transfer. What are your thoughts on such a journey? Do you think it would be safe?  more

Resolved Question: From Exeter to Heathrow Airport (T1)?

I need to get to terminal one at heathrow airport on the 19th of December by no later than 4:30am. The options I can only think of are catching a train or bus, however, navigating to heathrow in london by train/underground would be difficult for me (I am only nineteen and have never traveled far by train), and the earliest on the 19th a bus arrives at heathrow (from Exeter) is 5:30am which is too late. What other options do I have?  more

Open Question: Should America travel more by rail than road?

Resolved Question: Which is subsidized more, trains or highways?

There seems to be a conception that Amtrak is highly subsidized and automobiles are not. Similarly with freight traffic by train vs. truck. Yet roads are built and maintained with tax money, and taxes on fuel and licenses don't begin to cover it. Many (not all) train track ROW's are subject to property taxes, while roads are not. Train travel is much more efficient that either planes or automobiles, so if we want to reduce dependence on foreign oil, shouldn't we be encouraging train travel?  more

Open Question: Why am I feeling sick, can anyone suggest the answer?

For the last three or four weeks I've been feeling really sick on and off randomly, and last weekend I actually threw up, but it was on a train so may have been travel sickness, but I'm sure they are related because I've done that journey a million times before. I don't want to go to the doctors yet because I don't want them to just say go away and get on with it. Also I'm most probably not pregnant. Thank you  more

Open Question: Should I do a trial overnight at a kennel with my 5 month old puppy before we kennel her for a 5 day trip?

My husband and I are travelling in early January for a wedding and will be gone for 5 days. Our puppy is a cute, fairly well trained (for a 5 month old) Olde English Bulldog. She is being crate trained and doing well!!! We have left her before with family and friends for a night or 2 (she did great) but unfortunately we cant find anyone to take her for 5 days in January so we are looking into boarding her. Is it recommended to take a puppy there first for an overnight and see how she does and what can i expect after boarding my puppy for 5 days? Im really anxious about it and Im feeling guilty even though I know we have to do it at times (maybe twice a year tops!)? and advice?  more
