Open Question: my new job...advice please?

Started a new job, which is commision based. Basicaly i have to walk around houses and tell people about a product that they can receive 70 to 80% grants on, and sometimes 100% grants depending on their circumstances. If they want the product for 70-80% grant - I get £8.50 (as i am training i have to half it with my trainer) When i gain more experience i get £17.00 to myself for people that take the 70-80% grant If the customer is entitled to 100% grant - I get £6.00 ( again halfed with my trainer as he has to carry out the paperwork) If i was on my own i would get £12.00. Every day, I have to go to the office at 11am to check in and practice my speech for every door i go to, we leave the office at about 12, get lunch and go to an area which has been decided by my trainer, by train or bus, which we have to pay ourselves. The last appointment we can make is at 8pm so we generally leave an area after 8.30pm which means we get back to the office at around 9.30 to check in again and then get home around 10pm. As i am trainng, i have made barley any money, i have spent more money getting to the office and getting to my area of work than what i have made back. I have been told to keep receipts to claim tax back next year. This month i will have spent on average £140 on travel, And made about £70 which is about 20-30 per week. When i have learnt the ropes i can go out by myself and every customer that buys from me i will get either £17 or £12 per customer depending on which grant they receive. which means i can earn up to 300 per week, i dont know if i am being used by the company as a skivie or is it genuine, they say if i work hard i can be up to a manager by july? sounds bit mad but the current manager says he managed it in 5 1/2 months. I know im working on comission an all that but how on earth can i manage? any advice? more

Open Question: How much do travel agency's charge?

I am trying to plan my November 2010 Honeymoon. We want to fly to Hawaii and Cruise the islands. Also go there a few days early or stay a few days later than the cruise to extend the honeymoon. Its alot to plan so I thought about getting a travel agent. Problem is, if the fees for having a travel agent is too much, i feel it wouldn't be worth getting a company involved in helping me plan. What is the average cost of a travel agent. Do you recommend using one? more

Open Question: Question on home Propane heater tanks (rent/buy/prices) ?

I live in the Northeast US where winters can get fairly cold, and occasionally we lose power thus making our home heating furnace useless. We have a propane powered wall-mounted 'space heater' thats been in the house for many years - it also still has the copper line running out to where the propane tank used to be. Many years ago propane was economical to purchase & keep in tanks outside the house. Recently of course propane has gotten extremely expensive. My family had the gas co come out and disconnect their outside propane tank and return it, because it was just used for emergencies, therefore we could go for a year or 2 without needing a fill-up of propane (so they made no money on that) - and also the gas co charged an annual tank rental fee which started getting very expensive too. I would really like to have this heater functional again, as a backup in case of electric loss in winter. Does anyone know of a way to keep a tank at home that would hold enough propane to atleast run the space heater for say a day or 2 if power went out? For instance I see Ace Hardware sells a 100 lb verticle propane tank cylinder for $120. Could I buy that, then have a gas company come out and fill it? Just trying to figure out the most economical way to do this - (no rental fee's, no gas co contracts, etc) Some gas co's nowdays even charge a "non-use" fee for people who do not use enough gas to make it worth their while !! Nothing's easy any more is it ? Thanks for any tips - maybe people with large travel trailers, vacation homes/cabins, etc have had some experience in this and give me some help & ideas - Thanks !! more

Open Question: VERY long, exhaustive question, can I get into Harvard? I’d appreciate any answers.?

I’m a 21-year-old Egyptian male. I got into a good school here when I was 17, with a full scholarship to boot. But I basically wasted 4 years taking my program very lightly, cutting class, never studying, and my transcript is an eyesore. I was supposed to graduate in 2010. But I’ve just got an immigrant visa to Canada as a (Dependent Child of my father, a doctor) and since no degree program in Canada will transfer more than 50% of its credits from abroad, I’ll have at least 2 years until I graduate there. It’ll more likely be 3, since some of the courses I took aren’t compatible with Canadian ones, and my grades in some others are too bad to get them transferred. I can’t simply stay here and graduate, because then I would be blocked from leaving Egypt until I fulfill a military service obligation that could be anywhere from 1.25 years to 3. And, it’s better to take the time to graduate with Canadian credentials and experience if I’m going to look for a good job in Canada. Because of all this, I’ve decided there’s no problem with applying as an undergraduate all over again. I can try to compress a 4 year program into 3 years, if I take extra credits during each semester and in the summer. I would be at least 25 when I get a bachelor’s degree. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ But because I’ve underachieved so badly so far, I want to compensate by aiming to overachieve now. I have my sights set on a Harvard MBA. I know I have the advantage of diversity status. If I put my 3-4 years in Canada to the most strenuous good use, could I find my place in that 7%? In that time I can graduate with combined honors (although most good graduate schools in Canada require an honors degree anyway), get perfect A’s in every course and a perfect 4.0 GPA, work fulltime most of the year and save every penny, get unpaid internships with good companies, write freelance for magazines and newspapers, try to get my book published (well seriously, I'm a writer), do volunteer work abroad and help with social programs, become fluent in at least two more languages on top of my three, join a political party, travel, and become vocal in the Canadian community forum somehow. I have native fluent North American-accented English and I’m passionate about politics. Then maybe with years of savings, a job and a student loan that I could perhaps negotiate somehow, I’d be able to afford a Harvard MBA. But the thing is, getting accepted. Do you think that if I do everything I say I can do, I could be accepted into the program? I want this very much, I’ve thought of crazy possibilities to get in. I’m even thinking about training and mountaineering around Kilimanjaro and the Alps over the next 5 years, to try to summit Mount Everest before I apply. It’s why I’ve been studying so much research about alpine medicine. The first Egyptian did it in 2006. *Blush*. I know all this might sound stupid but I’m desperate to stand out. :-SI forgot to mention, a good GMAT score wouldn't be hard for me. more

Resolved Question: Is going into the dance field going out on a limb based on my situation?

I'm currently going to school to be a high school math teacher/college professor, which I don't mind I guess if I have to settle. What I REALLY REALLY(for emphasis..) want to do is major in dance (more modern than classical) and join a performance company (moving near a major city) or start some kind of small performance company/studio/ or travel and choreograph/teach. I'm currently signed up for 3 dance classes, ballet, jazz, choreography, I've done some cultural dancing and hip hop type on my own. I haven't been formally dancing for a long time but I've been dancing on my own in my free time for years.... and I tend to choreograph when I'm bored. Even though I have not had experience, I'm doing pretty well in ballet and picked up things pretty fast and kept up with people who have been taking classes since they were 3-8 or so. I pretty much live dance, music, and art/performing arts in terms of my interests, but my passion is dance and I want to pursue it. The genre I'm most interested in is a funk pop jazz type thing with classical thrown in here and there. My dilemma is that the school I am currently attending doesn't have a dance major and other options seem as though they'd cost money and be a huge risk in terms of finding a job after getting my degree. Could I possibly do the same in the dance world if I were to get a degree in what I'm doing now and maybe minor in dance somewhere or just take classes for experience but not hold a formal degree? I'm a determined and organized person but I know the arts are hurting now...I can only be a starving artist for so long..heh. Oh and I just turned 19 and I'm male...also if anyone knows specific schools? I don't want to be a professional male ballet dancer or anything. More modernesque performance and show based. more

Open Question: Career path dilemma. Get MBA to take over family business or. . . ?

I am 33 year old male. I have completed college along with two Master's degrees. I have held part time teaching positions, as well as part time freelance positions. I got into investing when I was left an inheritance and I now have a net worth in excess of one million. However, my uncle is about to retire and has offered to leave me in possession of his business. The company is worth somewhere between 30 to 75 million. The catch is I have to apply to get my MBA, complete the two years with an emphasis in management, then get trained in the company operations for a couple of years before taking over. Here's the problem: The company is in something I don't have that much interest in. My degrees are related to the Arts (hence the teaching and writing) and I have interests in studying music and traveling next year. The company is in something completely unrelated to anything I'd ever do, say, something like construction. Should I just do the two years of school and get the benefits of taking over that large of a company to secure my financial future? Or should I be happy that I already have plenty of money to live a good life and pursue my own personal interests that won't be as prosperous? Granted 30 to 75 million is A LOT of money, I already have what most would consider a lot of money and I don't really have to go to a 9 to 5 job to make it. Also, money has never really been a driving force for me. It's nice to have money, but I've been content with a lot less. It might be nice to secure a family's future however. I go back and forth. Open Question: What types of accidental death benefits are available?

My father was involved in a vehicle accident. I have heard rumors about the major companies carrying accidental death benefits, but from what I have been reading most are only covered under paid travel, meaning the means of travel was paid for with that credit card (plane ticket). I would like to know what other areas I can search to possible help with the financial debt. I have checked into his work, auto insurance and will be calling the bank tomorrow as well as his credit card companies as soon as I am appointed executor. Anywhere else I can check? I serioiusly doubt places will call me to advise me there is money waiting. What about websites that I can check to see if he is owed money?Major companies being credit card companies more

Open Question: Do you know anything about space travel for a story I'm writing?

I'm writing a story (I'm not sure when it takes place, probably in the present or future) about a competition for a ride in a space shuttle for 3 people. So, the first question is- is this info accurate or close to accurate? -Cost per person is $100,000,000 (though it's covered by the space company) -The journey is 10 months in all. Is that possible? Would it be longer? -There will be 24 hour surveillance on the ship, and a computer screen. Would electronics work on a space ship? -Two months of basic training -I threw in that space travel can trigger asthma attacks. Is that realistic? And the second question: What happens on a space shuttle? Can you take a shower? Go to the bathroom? What do you eat? Any other information you can give me? Thanks for any amount of help you can give me, it will make a big difference in my story! =)Thank you so much for all the answers I've already received! They've improved the quality of my work so much already! Another question: How big is a spaceship? Would they always be in the same room together,or have separate bedrooms? And how would they leave? Would they be launched or something? Thanks again :)Is it extremely unrealistic that they are in 8th grade?? more

Resolved Question: where should I go? SDSU or UCSD? what major?

I am planning to either major in international business or global studies. Although learning what I would in global studies is of HUGE interest to me, I find that it wouldn't open many opportunities for careers as international business would (I'm not really interested in the $$ part of business mostly advertisement or management).SDSU isn't a great school but it has a major in international business and a minor in international studies, while UCSD has a major in international studies and its a way better school. Where would I be better off? Are my assumptions on career opportunities correct? Note: I would really want to to work for an international company and work to help developing countries and its people's (not live there for too much time), anything having to do with different cultures/travel would be GREAT! also i would consider jobs in promotions/advertisement/event planning/management as my second choice. more

Open Question: What are the chances of getting a Netherlands business visa for 6 months after a personal interview?

Visiting company name = SAP Netherlands At first I submitted the following documents 1. Printout of invitation letter in my name from SAP NL. 2. Itinerary details = dummy tickets + hotel bookings, etc. 3. Bank statement + salary slips + IT return files. After 5 days I got back my passport with a note saying come for a personal interview with the "Original Invitation" letter. Yesterday I went to Mumbai for the interview. The consulate officer asked me a lot of questions all related to my profession. My current company is very small, having 12 employees. She told me that she has never heard of it. She also asked me about my current salary. I asked her if could get the passport(with visa) by yesterday because I was supposed to leave tonight for NL. She said she couldn't give me any assurance. I went to the VFS office in Mumbai. They told me that my passport was still with the consulate. Now I don't know how long it might take to get this business visa. Now the travel is postponed to next Wednesday, i.e. 3rd March. I'll be traveling abroad for the very first time. So please take a note of that too while answering. :)Honestly, I don't have much in my bank account. But the thing is SAP is my sponsor here. I'm working for them from India since mid Nov 2009. Now they want me to be there. Dummy tickets are just to get the visa done. It's just to hold a seat. did you book a hotel for 6 months ? SAP NL has booked the hotel but for 15 days because my 1st visit will last up to 2 weeks. are you going to work for sap ? Yes. Actually I'm already working for them, for the last 3 and a half months. do you want a multi entry visa ? Yes. It should have multiple entries so that I can go any time within 6 months. more

Open Question: Do I have a chance to win Green Card?

I traveled in USA in 2007 and participated in training program (J-1 visa status). I used to work at the dairy farm. Suddenly, I had health problems, I obtained peptic ulcer. I was hospitalized and diagnosed, and eventually I was treated. Most expenses for the antibiotic drugs were covered by Insurance Company; however I received a letter from the hospital, which said that I should pay approximately $300 for medical survey of my stomach (endoscopy). But, I postponed the payment several times and eventually forgot about my debt to hospital. Directly saying, I was fled to pay this money and returned back to Ukraine. Does this fact somehow negatively affect to my success on Green Card Lottery winning? Should I expect that I have the same equal chances like everyone, who tries his or her luck on winning a Green Card? more

Open Question: Travel Insurance Claim?

I have an annual policy that I have recently made a claim on. Is this policy now still valid ? I believe it is, but would the insurance company have any get out angles ? more

Open Question: After car accident and I received the other car's repair cost. But it's too high, what can I do?

I had an accident at my fault when I was traveling in USA by car with Mexican insurance. But because my policy doesn't have coverage in USA my insurance company declined to help me and I'm charged to pay the other car's repair cost. I hit the passenger side of other car, Nissan Altima 2009 and the other insurance company asked me to pay $12,000 dollars. Actually, it seems too high because my car Suzuki Gran Vitara 2009, broken all the frontal parts, repair cost calculated lower than that. I don't know how can I make a settlement. Thank you in advance. more

Resolved Question: Where should we go for Spring Break?

My step-sister and I have to choose a place to travel for Spring Break. The thing is, we have radically different personalities. She likes parties, fashion, clubbing, beaches, and shopping. I like museums, history, writing, photography, art, meeting new people, walking, stuff like that. We are both 18 and can drive, though I prefer solitude while she always wants company. Ideally I would accompany her to do what she wants while also having time to myself. We'd prefer a place where we speak the language. We both speak English and Spanish, but I prefer English, while she prefers Spanish. I also speak Italian. We would also prefer that the flight not be longer than 10 hours. I don't think she'd agree to England (and I went this past year anyway), and I didn't really like Paris (though I did enjoy smaller towns near the Pyrenees when I went to France). That said, staying in the US would be preferable, but not necessary. We've been to NYC twice this past year, so that's out. She suggested Los Angeles, but I can't think of anything I'd want to do there (but if you have suggestions, I'd be amenable to hearing them). I suggested Alaska, but she immediately declined. I have been to Spain (Madrid), but she hasn't, so right now, we're thinking Barcelona. But I think that's a bit far for her first time traveling out of the country. Another choice would be Amsterdam, but, again, we don't speak the language (though I'm sure enough people there speak English). I'd be open to hearing suggestions. Anything to do in Los Angeles? Canary Islands? Barcelona? ANY other place in the US would be great as well if there's enough for both of us to do. P.S. - We don't want any place that gets too swamped during Spring Break, like Mexico. We live in Miami, so we see plenty of that already. For this reason, beaches are also not necessary, though she would appreciate it.She doesn't like the cold at all, but I love it. Ideally it'd fall somewhere in the middle so we could both enjoy the weather. more

Resolved Question: Sending my travel agent a postcard with a note of thanks?

I recently used a travel agent to help me plan my first overseas trip and she was amazingly helpful. I'm planning to send some nice postcards to a few people while I'm away and was wondering if it would be appropriate to send one to her office with a short note of thanks. In case this seems strange, I only ask because at the company I work for customers sometimes send us cards and notes as a gesture of gratitude for the services we provide them. It always makes my day to know that I'm appreciated so I figured travel agents would feel the same. What do you think? more

Resolved Question: Does anyone else travel a lot for work to the point where you start to forget where home is?

I thought it was going to be a blast getting to travel all the time when I took the job. It was fun at first until my GF broke up with me because I was never around and then they decided to move me across the country. Now I am alienated from everyone I care about and I dont have time to meet anyone new to the area I just moved to, because I am never home. The few days that I am home, my apartment feels almost like a hotel room to me instead of a home. Literally I fly all across North America every day. One day I will be in Mexico City the next day I will be in Boston. Then a couple days later I will be shipped out to LA then to Chicago then Hawaii and so on. I'm at the point now where I can care less where I go. My company just sends me an email I receive it on my Iphone then I order plane tickets and fly there do my work then find the nearest bar and get plastered. If anyone else travels like this and doesnt see your home for weeks at a time then your only there for a couple days before you ship out again how do you meet friends? How are you supposed to keep a GF? Why do I feel like Tobacco and Alcohol are my only friends and family? Does this ever get any easier? more

Voting Question: If I have to travel to another office for a mandatory meeting is the company obliged to pay mileage?

I was told that I had to attend a mandatory meeting- on a Saturday (I normally have Sat & Sun off). The meeting was at the corporate office, which is a further location than the office that I work at. The company had always paid my mileage for traveling to this corporate office. It is now 2 months later, and I was jsut informed that the company has decided that they will not pay mileage anymore. Ummm, hello! They never said anything about this until after the meeting! Furthermore, it is not in the company handbook nor was anyone notified in writing, just via word of mouth. Do they have to pay me mileage for this meeeting? I am angry! help! more

Voting Question: what career path is best for me?

At 40 I am making a caeer change but it is so hard to decide I have taken numerous career tests and they all come back to what I have done and burned out. my likes are travel, working by myself, My start time my dislikes are manual labor, being tied to the same spot all day everyday I am a restless person, I am likeable person.Office politics get on my nerves and the people are so fake. i can't do it anymore. In the manual labor field, people have no amition and try to one up everybody else and expect you to believe they slept with 10 girls the night before and smoked a pile of weed 3 feet high. You raise your hand to go to the restroom like a child. A buzzer rings when you stop and start work like robots. my history of employment includes- Air traffic controller (US Navy) after i got out I worked foundries and steel mills went to school for drafting all of these I did not like. Went back to school again for Computer science/technician did this for years working my way up the ranks doing field service repair to small to medium sized business networks. I moved on to Network Administrator to director of MIS. Career was going great I was the boss controlled 4 locations then September 11th happened the company I was at went out of business in the wake of this. A felony record of mine from years before for an assault popped only had probation never jail. This conviction never bothered me in the past, I had changed my ways and went to college in the mean time. Searching for employment I was turned down many times with my salary was to high I would never be happy at what they could give me, or the worst one my assault conviction. Seems I am blacklisted from working for anybody. So I decided to go get my CDL until things could change and I could support my family. I wrecked my semi and decided that wasnt the best career goal for me, so I decided to go back to information technology. no one was raising their hand to hire me so I started contracting and after about a year of this I found a good steady contract. I loved it!!! I did Field Service repair in Hospitals. The only downfall it was 24/7 work but I didnt mind I was paid extremely well. I got to travel some to take care of other territories for other workers. I did this job for a few years until the recession hit and my contract was cut. I went back to school again, this time for motorcycle repair. Year long school figured I could do it until the economy picked up. I didnt really like the motorcycle work and decided i would go back to IT again after graduation with an added skill of motorcycle repair so I could work on my own bike and maybe a few others for extra money. The day i graduated I had a heart attack, it was diagnosed as stress related so now I have to find something not hard work low stress and getting to travel some (field service fly somewhere fix a project fly home) preferrably a home office set my own schedule type of work. more
