I am a US citizen and my husband is a Senegalese national. In about one month we are scheduled for his adjustment of status interview with USCIS. We have all our necessary documents and are more than ready. Only recently a friend of mine had mentioned that my husband needed to have a valid passport for the interview. My husband entered the country many years ago so the passport he has has long expired. I was under the impression that as long as he had his I-94 and his expired passport was stamped with the original Visa indicating legal inspected entry that was good enough. There would be no need for him to renew his Senegalese passport considering the fact that as an overstay he could not travel anyway. Anyone have any experience with this? more

We have some contractors who are requesting to be paid a "per diem" instead of a fee. This is for local work, no travel, and the workers are given meals at the job site. The contractors seem to think that we would not need to report the per diem on the 1099 Misc. I beg to differ as I expect we do need to report any payment (regardless of whether it's called a per diem) in Box 7 of the Form 1099 Misc. Then it is up to the contractor to report properly what's taxable and what's not, and document his expenses properly, to the IRS. Do I understand this correctly? Bedoon: Kuwait's Dirty Little Secret Kuwait, a strategic US ally, harbors a startling little-known civil rights secret: its stateless people, the Bedoon. Bedoon means "without" in Arabic (Bedoon is different than "Bedouin" meaning nomadic/formerly nomadic tribes.) Bedoon refers to people with no nationality. Kuwait is one of the only few countries in the world where there are citizens within the country who have no nationality. In Kuwait, Bedoon must pay to obtain any official documentation (if they are lucky enough to get that far) including: permission to marry, birth and death certificates, drivers licenses, identification, etc. They have to go to the official Kuwaiti office called the "Bedoon Council" and beg to get any rights at all. Many are not allowed to work. They can not own property. Many can't obtain travel papers. Recently, the Kuwaiti authorities agreed to issue travel documents for the religious journey, Haj, to Bedoon � on the condition that they "solve their identity problem" before returning to Kuwait (therefore not being allowed back into their country). If a Bedoon man marries a Kuwaiti woman, their children are Bedoon (it is the opposite if a Kuwaiti man marries a Bedoon woman � both she and her children can obtain Kuwaiti citizenship). If the Bedoon man has any difficulties and wants a divorce, the Kuwaiti x-wife can not only be granted full custody of their children, but ask for alimony and child support in almost the full amount of the husband's salary, leaving him destitute. Therefore, Bedoon men are at the mercy of their Kuwaiti wives. If you drive by Sulaybia, Kuwait, North on 5th Ring Road towards the area of Jahra, you will notice a tin shanty town which is inhabited mainly by Bedoon. Depending on the whims of the Kuwaiti government, there have been several attempts to destroy this area and "relocate" the Bedoon living there. To where? It is often said that they can "go back to their countries". Where are their countries if several generations (some going back to the 1964 census) have been born and raised in Kuwait? If a Bedoon person speaks out, he/she is ostracized and may face legal action including deportation (again � to where?). Many Bedoon fought for Kuwait; many were in the Kuwaiti military and stayed in Kuwait, fighting as resistance. In a radio address while in exile in Saudi Arabia during the occupation of Kuwait by Iraq, the late Emir, Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, stated that those Bedoon who fought for their country would be granted their Kuwaiti citizenship. Like the promise of women's suffrage, perhaps it is just a long time in coming, but it isn't being discussed at the top levels YET. Kuwait is openly pleased about its ties with the US and foray into world democracy, and yet the Kuwaiti Government is doing nothing to solve the inhumane Bedoon issue. As younger generations of Bedoon are coming up, they are learning more about democracy and civil rights. They are an intensely angry group. If people feel that they have no hope, no future, no care � they become desperate. It is a tremendous security risk to an already security-strained nation. My PC has been infected by a bug that I can't get rid of, and I am intending to have it reformatted. I am in the process of making copy files (mostly documents, pictures, music files). I want to have copies in my USB, but I'm afraid that when I upload them onto my reformatted PC, a bug that could have wiggled into the USB or CD or Data Stick would wiggle out and infect the PC again! The bug is "anti-virus pro 2009." Certain web pages are blocked from access (e.g. avg.com), certain programs do not initiate (e.g. certain anti-malware programs), and I have scanned my PC multiple times with many different programs. Megabytes have been deleted as a result but the bug/virus/spyware persist. If I continue, my PC could be damaged (is it irreversible?). Even in safe mode (I have system restore off) the bug's tempering is evident. My final option is to reformat. It seems I am not far from that point. I could download more programs on my USB from elsewhere and install it on safemode) but as I have said, even in safemode, certain programs dont intiate. I couldnt install malwarebytes. My college applications are due Nov. 30. I have no time to do so many things. The security and integrity of my PC is compromised (actually, 3 ppl in my family use it). Hi, Im a LPR as of september 08 when i applied for a travel doc, i checked the refugee travel document option! i finally got it two days ago im planning to travel to sweden in january 09 for three weeks! I do not have a passport from my home country! so im planning to use the trav doc as a passport! today, i was told that i need reentry permit instead of the refugee travel doc in order to reenter the USA! otherwise i will not be permitted to come back to the states! is that true? i cannot use my refugee trav doc as a reentry permit in this situation? do i need to apply now for a reentry permit? how long its gonna take to get one? Kerning/Tracking Edits Made to Fonts Used in Document Do Not travel with Document. Every time i make kerning changes to the document in either quark 7 the changes do not follow the document when i open it up in version 6. Same goes if i make the changes in 6 and then open it in 7. My office uses both between all the users, so we need to find a solution to this. Anyone know how? All i find online, or with the help of their customer service is: "" Kerning/Tracking Edits Made to Fonts Not Used in Document Do Not travel with Document (Cross-platform) Issue: Changes made in the Kern/Track editor to a font not used in a document do not travel with the document, although they do trigger the Nonmatching Preferences alert. Explanation: If the kerning or tracking table of a font is edited (Utilities > Kerning Table Edit or Tracking Edit) but the font is not used in the active document, and that document is subsequently opened by a copy of QuarkXPress with different preferences, the Non-matching Preferences alert dialog box (which offers choices to Use Cypress Preferences or Keep Document Settings) displays even if all other preferences are exactly the same. Even if Keep Document Settings is clicked, the edits to the kerning/tracking tables are not loaded. Workaround: If you want to make sure that changes made to a font in the Kern/Track editor travel with a document, be sure to use the font somewhere in the document (even to a space).
