Travel Network Questions asked

Open Question: Which cartoon from the 90's is this?

I remember so little, but I watched a show on american Cartoon Network as a child, I'm from Norway, so I didn't understand the language when CN was on english. It was a little like Jonny Quest, only the characters were older, the main character was blond and "handsome", I think he and his crew liked to ride horses when they travelled. The episoder were always kind of mysterious, but i only remember ONE episode: I think the story was going over 2 episodes, the first one with a "will be continued" in the end. The main character falls in love with some sort of princess, and I can slightly remember a piknik. In the second episode, they are getting married, and at the alter, she suddenly gets old and/or ugly, because she's a witch or has a spell on her.. Please help me, I'm dying of curiosity, and would like to see that episode again! more

Open Question: I need feedback on my personal statement?

Be aware it's very rough and a bit all over the place..I just want to know whether i'm on the right track.Cheers I am intrigued by the mechanisms of the human body. How, with no mechanical input, are we able to breathe, think, eat and even sleep? Life itself revolves around the wonders of science. Science is ever-changing, multifaceted, in many ways inexplicable. A sturdy desire to help others, incorporated with a zeal for science is my major reasons for choosing such a science/healthcare orientated course. Working in a hospital was an endearing moment for me; I taught me not just the responsibilities of a Doctor, but a network of healthcare professions that make a well established hospital. My current prospect is to take a Gap year.................. To make optimum use of my time I am currently working as a care assistant at Basildon hospital. I plan to travel to North America and Nigeria for several months to broaden my horizons to the world around me. My interest and ability in Chemistry was acknowledged by me receiving the Chemistry Prize two years consecutively. more

Resolved Question: Time travelling and the butterfly effect?

Let's all assume time travelling is possible. I'm curious about time travel and it's use in SF movies. Basically all movies say that time travelling will not alter the time-line at all if you make a minor change in the past. For example, you can't go back and kill Hitler, but you can go for a walk in the park. But what about the butterfly effect? Wouldn't any change whatsoever change the time-line? Suppose I go back in past and go for a walk down the street in the evening. I don't interact with anyone so I wouldn't make a change. I accidentally slip and fall onto something which makes a huge noise in the neighbourhood. A couple in the nearby house notices the noise and ends their activities to see what's wrong. When they come back in the house, they aren't up for the same activity they we're up for prior to that. As a result of that, a child wasn't conceived. A child may be conceived later, but it can't have the same set of genes, or personality. This changes the family's social network. Their social network changes other families' social network. Ultimately, the whole word's social network is changed. All because of one person, whether it's a historically insignificant person or someone like Einstein. Hell, even the time traveller might not be born because of this. This is certainly a paradox. It seems like it's only possible for a time traveller to create a different time-line, which creates a different future. But, would it really be possible for a time traveller to go back to the original future after making ever-so-small changes? more

Voting Question: Fortune 500 company executive?

Hello there. I am trying to decide on which career I should pursue. My ultimate career goal is to eventually become a rich executive of a fortune 500 company, preferably a media company like Time Warner or Viacom. I am currently deciding on which career to choose between investment banking and management consulting. Both positions would be located in NYC. Some people say that consulting is better since you have better job security, you create a better network, partners make 1 million plus each year, and you don't have the long and boring investment banking hours. Other people say investment banking is better since you make more money, you don't travel as often, etc. I don't know which choice is better for me. I'm not sure which career path could lead me to the executive position at a Fortune 500 media company and make me super rich. Which career should I choose? more

Voting Question: About to get engaged to partner... people's thoughts on getting engaged/married young...?

Hello all, My Partner and I bought our engagement ring this week and he hasn't popped the question yet, but I'm sure it will be soon... Anyway my question to you is that we are both 21, and I have been hearing a lot of negative feedback from people telling me it's too young and that I need to "go out and live" which I think is their way of saying I need to sleep with a bunch of men first.... We have been together just shy of 5 years, and we got our own beautiful home and been living together almost 5 months now. I'm currently completing the last Semester of my Teaching Degree at University and he has been a fully qualified Network Engineer with a stable career for 3 years now... we are comfortable and happy together. Our relationship has been hard work building towards our future but also very rewarding. We have both changed significantly from who we were when we started dating (16) to now (21) however I feel as if we have grown together and our love has deepened, we have very similar goals in life, for children, travel and so forth, and whilst I don't believe in "the one" if there were one... He would be it! I'm in no rush to marry, if I am spending the rest of my life with this man there is no need to rush, but it feel a little odd still having him still referred to as my 'boyfriend' which I do not feel adequately describes the nature of our relationship. However, people are constantly teling me it is too young... yet I'm unsure if they are speaking from experience or are just disapproving, so I thought I would see what other people who may have experienced a similar situation feel about it. I'm not seeking approval, I know what I want, I would simply like to see if other people have experienced this and how things worked out for them. For even if I were single I don't think I could "go out and live" in the sense of sleeping with a lot of men and partying... It just isn't me. I am of the opinion that many single women in their twenties and even thirties are out looking for exactly what I have now, and I would be a fool to give it up for the sake of being wild for a few years. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts :) more

Voting Question: Did anybody see this & opinions please Human trafficking second only to drugs in Mexico?

This requires a few minutes to read>please skip if you cannot read for more than 3o seconds.(CNN) -- Mario Santos likely never made it to the United States. The 18-year-old set out 10 years ago from his native El Salvador in search of opportunity and a better way of life. But he had to travel north through Mexico first. A short while after leaving, he called his parents to tell them he had been beaten and robbed in Mexico, left penniless and without shoes or clothes. It was the last they heard from him. While it's not certain that Santos is dead, he probably suffered the same fate as 72 migrants from Central and South America whose bodies were found this week in a ranch in northern Mexico, just 90 miles from the U.S. border. Officials are investigating whether they were the victims of human traffickers or drug cartels that prey on migrants. It's a fate that officials say befalls thousands of Central and South Americans every year. "It's brutal," says Peter Hakim, president emeritus of the Inter-American Dialogue, a non-partisan Washington policy institute. "This is very big business. It's very brutal." Video: 72 bodies found in Mexican ranch RELATED TOPICS Mexico Human Rights Drug Trafficking It is indeed big business. Human trafficking is one of the most lucrative forms of crime worldwide after drug and arms trafficking, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said in April. In Mexico, it is a $15 billion- to $20 billion-a-year endeavor, second only to drug trafficking, said Samuel Logan, founding director of Southern Pulse, an online information network focused on Latin America. "And that may be a conservative estimate," Logan said. That money, which used to go mostly to smugglers, now also flows into the hands of drug cartel members. The Center for Strategic and International Studies, a bipartisan, nonprofit policy institute based in Washington, noted in an August report that human smuggling and other illegal activities are playing an increasingly important role as narcotraffickers diversify their activities. "The drug cartels have not confined themselves to selling narcotics," the report said. "They engage in kidnapping for ransom, extortion, human smuggling and other crimes to augment their incomes." Some cartels have come to rely more in recent years on human smuggling. "For the Zetas, it's been one of their main revenue streams for years," Logan said about the vicious cartel, which operates mostly in northeastern Mexico. Cartel involvement has increased the risk for migrants crossing through Mexico to get to the United States, said Mexico's National Commission for Human Rights. An investigation by the commission showed that 9,758 migrants were abducted from September 2008 to February 2009, or about 1,600 per month. No one knows exactly how many people try to make the passage every year. The human rights organization Amnesty International estimates it as tens of thousands. More than 90 percent of them are Central Americans, mostly from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, Amnesty International said in a report this year. And the vast majority of these migrants, the rights group said, are headed for the United States. "Their journey is one of the most dangerous in the world," Amnesty International said. "Every year, thousands of migrants are kidnapped, threatened or assaulted by members of criminal gangs," the rights group said. "Extortion and sexual violence are widespread and many migrants go missing or are killed. Few of these abuses are reported and in most cases those responsible are never held to account." An indication of how many people attempt the trip can be found in statistics compiled by Mexico's National Migration Service, which tracks how many migrants are detained and returned to their countries of origin each year. Experts note that these are only the migrants who get caught, and that many -- even most -- are not apprehended. Nonetheless, the Mexican agency said it detained 64,061 migrants last year, 60,383 of whom were from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. About 20 percent of them were females and about 8 percent were under the age of 18. Some were under 10. http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/08/26/mexico.human.trafficking/#fbid=v96fLsfRr0L&wom=true Good thing Obama has the border secured more

Resolved Question: My internet goes off daily..?

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CR31S laptop, and I get my internet connection through our Netgear router which is secured with a 'key', and I have a Virgin Media broadband box. Every day I can guarantee my internet connection will suddenly go off at random times, giving me the "This webpage cannot be displayed" message on web pages. Yet when I check my internet connection on the 'Connect to a network' on the start bar, it still shows my internet as 'connected'. I have to fully restart my laptop for the internet to come back on, yet I don't know why this is? I know it's probably not a problem with my broadband, or router, as when I was travelling I took my laptop with me, and it did the exact same thing in the hotel. So can anyone help please? It's getting beyond annoying now! more

Resolved Question: I have been un-employed for 11 months?

I was working in the insurance industry and have 5 years accounting experience. I really don't know why I can't find a job with my experience I have gained over the years. I am 26 and have applied for about 650 jobs online since being out of work. I know there is alot of competition out there but I must be doing something wrong. I recently attended a job seminar which was very helpful which was funded through the job centre. I have since updated my CV, joined ‘linkedin’ as the guy said a lot of companies are not going through job agencies anymore and are advertising jobs through social networking sites to reduce costs although I am finding this really tough as I can’t seem to find a job which matches my level of experience. Apart from applying for jobs online, I have emailed about 250-300 companies directly, emailed old clients I use to work with and have emailed former work colleagues/managers but unfortunately nothing turned up. I have not done any studies or anything just yet as I am waiting to start work and then take my accountancy studies once I have joined a company as they can fund that for you. I think also the longer I am out of work the harder I am going to find it especially as employers don’t like when people have huge gaps on their CV. Every day apart from the weekend is like Groundhog Day for me. Wake up late, look for work on about 10 different job sites, chase job agencies, watch TV, have dinner, go gym, check Facebook then play Playstation 3 until the early hours. I use to go travelling quite a bit and would like to do some more once I start earning some money so that is another out of many other reasons why I would like to get back into work. I am so eager to get back into work its unreal. My parents just say keep going and something will turn up and im sure something will, im not going to give up as I know its just a matter of time. If you have any opinions, find yourself in a similar situation or would like to give me any advice then please share your thoughts, thanks. more

Resolved Question: Ground Zero Mosque Dilemma?

Everyone is making a really big deal out of "mosque" building request to blocks away from ground zero, y is that? I'm a fully American I was born here, I travelled to many Arabs countries and non of them appeared like how ppl (my friends) discriped. Anyways, everytime I check twitter or any other social networks I see ppl fight about this thing. Some people say Muslim religon (or Muslims god) tells them to attck the us. Well I'm a deeply Muslim but there is nothing in my Quran that says attack or dissrecpect USA. People who did 9/11 r killers who happened to chosse Islam as cover. For example there is some Christian killers right? But I don't call all Christian killers because they r not. My religion says I must respect everyone especially Jews and Christians. Other people say Muslim made the explosion (which we didn't terrerist did) so how can we let them worship there? Well my answer for that: u should be realist and don't generalize what a few group of ppl did to ruin Islam. I also heard a church was built there but government didn't let them build it again in the place, well I guess it the same problem ( government shouldn't stop any group of--Jews,Christians,Muslims or any other group from worshiping what they believe in in any place. Also one thing I wanted to clear out "jihad": I asked many ppl in many Arran countries about that and here is what they agreed on: jihad was a group of army that defended Islam before 14 centuries and it was made of soldiers who would fight in that time to protect something. So I asked does that mean I should attack everyone that insult Islam and they said no because jihad was made for that time or centuries where everyone had to go to war and stuff, jihad not for this time things r diffrent now. I hear other people in the Internet saying "kick them out of USA" that makes me really sad because I'm American just like everyone perhaps even more. Also about Obama: we chosse him because if his views and ideas not because if his religion I don't and nobody does care about his religion what ever it is. Lastly about the title "dilemma" I said that because there is not right soluloution, if they agreed to build the mosque other people will be mad and if they didn't Muslims will be mad. So I can imagine how hard it is for the presedent and government to decide. So I guess this all I had in my mind thanks for reading and I'm sorry if I insulted or disrespected u in any means. As I said if immam Abdul faisl raif really said that then he only reflex his views not all of Muslim more

Resolved Question: Please Help VOTE and Make A Difference?

hey all, this is Spc Thiele from HHC 1-168 INF outta council bluffs iowa. My fiance was given an opportunity of a life time the day after I left for Camp Shelby by becoming a candidate for Woodhouse making a difference campaign, we are looking for people to vote for her so she can win the car for the month of august sh...e is currently in first place, but other candidates are catching up very fast. The reason she is up for the car is because our son was diagnosed with Hydranencephaly, leacing him completely dependant on her and I, we travel from sioux city to omaha, sioux falls, Minneapolis, and Kansas city if not further to take Kayden to his numerous doctor visits which he has every other week if not weekly. We have spent many nights in the ER in sioux city especially when he gets sick. When he was born he was only given 3 days to live, but he exceeded the everything the doctors said, after the 3 days they only gave him 1 year to live, and now they keep pushing it back. He will be 3 years old on August 28, this year, and is stronger than ever. Doctors said he will never see without the help of glasses, he has yet to wear glasses and we just had an eye appointment in july, they said he would never eat solid foods, but he started eating solid foods and spitting out chunks he could not swallow, they said he would never talk, but he still says mommy and daddy almost every day, they also said he would never walk, but he beat those odds by walking through the living room on one beautiful morning, with the help of Shanna. He is a very playful and energetic little boy, and takes on all the challenges he's faced with head on and will always beat the odds. Shanna currently drives a 1988 oldsmobile, and we are having to put more and more money in it each week, sometimes making the struggle of even starting it, and have to worry about it breaking down on the interstate if we drive that to doctors. So if you could all please vote for candidate 4, so kayden could have a nice ride to the doctors we would both greatly appreciate this, this car isn't for shanna, or myself, it's for our little boy so we can drive him to the places he needs to go without the worry of a breakdown, and so that we have all the room we need for his wheel chair or stroller along with bags of clothes. The website is http://woodhouse.com/difference/vote.htm She is candidate 4 rules are 1 vote per person, per email, if you have more then one email, you may have to change your name if you would like to vote more than once. Also if you could share this with your friends and other family members that would be amazing. If anyone would like to see pictures, or a montage from the Childrens miracle network phone a thon we would gladly show those, or even answer any questions about what he faces every day, don't be shy just send one of us a message. more

Resolved Question: What do you think (4) North Korean Intelligence Agents Caught Sneaking Into US Through Mexican Border?

What do you think (4) North Korean Intelligence Agents Caught Sneaking Into US Through Mexican Border ?Four (4) North Koreans attempted to sneak into the USA from Mexico our southern border, but were apprehended. The four necessarily are intelligence operatives, for NO North Korean citizens travel freely or without the sanction and close watch and instruction of the Korean Workers Party and the intelligence apparatus of North Korea; only diplomats and those under control of the KWP are allowed overseas travel, passports (in this case to get to Mexico), etc.. North Korean refugees fleeing Kimilsungist Communism are processed through normal diplomatic and refugee channels. Why has this not been a top issue? What were they attempting to achieve? Where were they heading? What networks did they use to get as far as US soil (Arizona)? Were they heading for one of our nuclear lab facilities? Do they have compatriots who have made it into the US and are in the Korean community or otherwise operating actively? (Report covers the FY2007-2009 period). Link to page with government documents. Resolved Question: do i have to work part time or not?

here's the situation. I just graduated from college. I am the eldest. My mom doesnt have a job. My dad has a new family now. He doesnt give child support. My brother stopped from college, but aint working. My sister still goes to school; she is about to graduate this year. We are really broke right now. We dont have any source of income. I tried internship with one company, I passed. They offered me a job, I declined. Reason is, my body gets sick easily when travelling a lot. Plus the place is 2 hours from our place. My transportation going to that company costs about half my day's pay. Now, I'm thinking, can I just get a part time job instead, but in a call center. Call centers here pay decently. But I am not yet sure how much theyll give for part time. And the place is again, far from here. Its just a little closer that the one earlier. Since, I do well in computer networking, I also considering being self employed Problem is where will I get my clients. I dont have enough tools yet. I also know some suppliers, but how to do the papers, I dont know. And again, no funds yet. Plus we all know that doing projects doesnt give you a stable income. No project, no income. Resolved Question: I need help with this article! please help i just want to know the main point of this article.?

YOU DONT NEED TO READ THIS WHOLE ARTICLE JUST A COUPLE PARAGRAPHS. I JUST WANT TO KNOW THE MAIN POINT PLEASE! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN -- Like an anxious matchmaker nudging a nervous couple together, the Obama administration has persuaded Afghanistan and Pakistan to take their first tangible step toward bilateral cooperation -- a trade agreement that will facilitate the ground shipment of goods between and through the two countries. The accord has been under negotiation for years; Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari promised President Obama more than a year ago that it would be completed by the end of 2009. During marathon talks between the two sides that began last week, U.S. officials helped forge a deal in time to announce it Sunday night, just hours after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton arrived for a two-day visit. On Monday, Clinton and the Pakistanis will unveil their own bilateral agreement pledging an initial $500 million in new U.S. economic assistance to Pakistan. The aid, primarily for water and energy projects, is part of a $7.5 billion, five-year development package approved by Congress last fall. The trade and aid agreements are part of the administration's ongoing efforts to facilitate Obama's Afghanistan war strategy. It hopes that a long-term investment here, along with repeated visits from senior officials, will persuade Pakistan to more solidly align its interests with those of the United States. Most immediately, the Obama administration would like the Pakistani military to take more aggressive action against Taliban groups that use Pakistan as their headquarters and base of operations for attacks in Afghanistan. The groups, including the Haqqani network based in the Pakistani tribal areas along the Afghan border and the Quetta Shura based in the southern province of Baluchistan, have historically close ties with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence directorate. After the Times Square bombing attempt in May, U.S. intelligence concluded that confessed bomber Faisal Shahzad had been trained and directed by the Pakistani Taliban, a domestic extremist group allied with those active in Afghanistan. Administration officials warned Pakistan that a successful attack in U.S. territory emanating from Pakistan would have a "devastating impact on our relationship," Clinton said in an interview with the BBC on Sunday. "I worry about it all the time, and so do the Pakistanis," she said. Islamabad is at least as important as Kabul, Richard C. Holbrooke, the administration's special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, said Sunday. Pakistan is "one of the most critical countries in the world," he said. Historical adversaries Pakistan and India have long competed for influence in Afghanistan, and the administration has tried to juggle its relations with the three while encouraging resolution of differences among them. Over the past year, it has pushed for dialogue between Islamabad and Kabul as part of its war effort. The new trade accord, an expansion of a limited agreement signed in 1965 and the subject of sporadic and unsuccessful negotiations since then, will boost Afghan exports by regularizing customs and transit permit arrangements, giving Afghanistan easier access to Pakistani seaports and allowing Pakistan greater access to Central Asia. Afghan trucks, which have had to offload goods onto Pakistani vehicles on their joint border, will be able to deliver goods directly to Pakistani destinations and ports, and to travel across Pakistan to the Indian border, where the items will be offloaded onto Indian trucks. Full cross-border transit has been put off until Pakistan and India resolve their own differences. Administration officials have been divided on other aspects of Pakistan-Afghanistan cooperation, including the prospect that Karzai, with Pakistani encouragement, might move too quickly to cede political power to the Taliban that they have not won on the battlefield. Both governments have grown leery of the strength of the U.S. commitment, with concerns about waning popular and political support for the war in the United States and Obama's pledge to begin troop withdrawals in July 2011. Clinton will travel from Islamabad to Kabul to attend a conference where Karzai is expected to announce concrete plans for reintegration of low-level Taliban fighters, anti-corruption measures, a new community defense program and other initiatives that the international community has agreed to fund. The trip to Pakistan is Clinton's second as secretary of state, following a visit in October marked by hostile questioning from student, media and civil society groups. After meetings Sunday night with Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani and Zardari, Clinton and Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Monday will convene the seco more

Resolved Question: West Midlands 16-18 bus pass?

Hi, I'm trying to sort out my travel to college when i start in a month's time. I've read on the 'Network West Midlands' site that students can get child-priced season tickets if you are eligible for a 16-18 student ID card (which I am) , but you can only get the application forms for that from school or college. I'm not at school anymore and they hadn't heard of it when I was there. Can anyone tell me where I can get this form, as it's not available online to print off. Thanks x more

Voting Question: unfair business practices and defamation?

I work at the head office for a relatively recently established franchise based organisation. The business pakage we offer is genuinely much much better than any of our competitors, and our initial franchise fee to join the network is less than half the price of the market leader, AND, inspite of this, our monthly managment fees are cheaper than theirs, and the products supplied by us to our franchisees are significantly better than that of the market leader, despite being a third of the price. We have begun to take up a significant part of the market share as a result (though we are still a relatively small company, with only 50 franchises, to our competitors 300). However, over the course of the last year, we have been the victim oof an ongoing slander campaign. Our franchisees are consistently being contacted by a now ex franchisee, and being encouraged to refuse to pay their managment fees and cry misrepresentation. The ex franchisee in question has been arriving out open days to harrass and deter potential new franchisees, and published vast amounts of libelous information on the internet, claiming that 70% of our franchises fail (inspite of actually havin one of the best failre rates in the industry, at around 12%), as well as numerous other untrue and defamatory statements about the products and equipment we use. WE believe the ex-franchisee in question is being funded to do so by our competitors - he was seen speaking with the managment around a week after leaving our network, and has consistently devoted all of his time for almost a year and a half now, to harming our brandname - frequently travelling hundreds of miles to sabotage open days and spending hours on the phone each week harrassing our franchisees in the process, despite apparently having no income. The damage done to our business is epic, and we are now on the verge of bankruptcy and don't have the funding to pursue ex-fran in question. Surely there must be some legislation to protect us?????? more

Voting Question: Ok, here it is as succinct as I can do it. Question: Does anyone care?

After the fall of the Soviet Union, Argentine oil company Bridas, led by its ambitious chairman, Carlos Bulgheroni, became the first company to exploit the oil fields of Turkmenistan and propose a pipeline through neighboring Afghanistan. A powerful US-backed consortium intent on building its own pipeline through the same Afghan corridor would oppose Bridas' project. As of 1992, 11 western oil companies controlled more than 50 percent of all oil investments in the Caspian Basin, including Unocal, Amoco, Atlantic Richfield, Chevron, Exxon-Mobil, Pennzoil, Texaco, Phillips and British Petroleum. In October 1995, with neither company in a winning position, Bulgheroni and Imle accompanied Niyazov to the opening of the UN General Assembly. There, Niyazov awarded Unocal with a contract for a 918-mile natural gas pipeline. Bulgheroni was shocked. At the announcement ceremony, Unocal consultant Henry Kissinger said that the deal looked like "the triumph of hope over experience." According to Ahmed Rashid, "Unocal's real influence with the Taliban was that their project carried the possibility of US recognition, which the Taliban were desperately anxious to secure." Unocal wasted no time greasing the palms of the Taliban. It offered humanitarian aid to Afghan warlords who would form a council to supervise the pipeline project. It provided a new mobile phone network between Kabul and Kandahar. Unocal also promised to help rebuild Kandahar, and donated $9,000 to the University of Nebraska's Center for Afghan Studies. The US State Department, through its aid organization USAID, contributed significant education funding for Taliban. In the spring of 1996, Unocal executives flew Uzbek leader General Abdul Rashid Dostum to Dallas to discuss pipeline passage through his northern (Northern Alliance-controlled) territories. Bridas countered by forming an alliance with Ningarcho, a Saudi company closely aligned with Prince Turki el-Faisal, the Saudi intelligence chief. Turki was a mentor to Osama bin Laden, the ally of the Taliban who was publicly feuding with the Saudi royal family. As a gesture for Bridas, Prince Turki provided the Taliban with communications equipment and a fleet of pickup trucks. Now Bridas proposed two consortiums, one to build the Afghanistan portion, and another to take care of both ends of the line. By November 1996, Bridas claimed that it had an agreement signed by the Taliban and Dostum—trumping Unocal. The competition between Unocal and Bridas, as described by Rashid, "began to reflect the competition within the Saudi Royal family." In 1997, Taliban officials traveled twice to Washington, D.C. and Buenos Aires to be wined and dined by Unocal and Bridas. No agreements were signed. It appeared to Unocal that the Taliban was balking. In addition to royalties, the Taliban demanded funding for infrastructure projects, including roads and power plants. The Taliban also announced plans to revive the Afghan National Oil Company, which had been abolished by the Soviet regime in the late 1970s. Osama bin Laden (who issued his fatwa against the West in 1998) advised the Taliban to sign with Bridas. In addition to offering the Taliban a higher bid, Bridas proposed an open pipeline accessible to warlords and local users. Unocal's pipeline was closed—for export purposes only. Bridas' plan also did not require outside financing, while Unocal's required a loan from the western financial institutions (the World Bank), which in turn would leave Afghanistan vulnerable to demands from western governments. Bridas' approach to business was more to the Taliban's liking. Where Bulgheroni and Bridas' engineers would take the time to "sip tea with Afghan tribesmen," Unocal's American executives issued top-down edicts from corporate headquarters and the US Embassy (including a demand to open talks with the CIA-backed Northern Alliance). During the final months of the Clinton administration, the Taliban was officially a rogue regime. After nearly a decade of fierce competition between the US-supported Unocal-CentGas consortium and Bridas of Argentina, neither company had secured a deal for a trans-Afghanistan pipeline. Immediately upon seizing the White House, George W. Bush resumed relations with the Taliban. Bush stocked his cabinet with figures from the energy industry with long-time ties to Central Asia (including Dick Cheney of Halliburton, Richard Armitage of Unocal, Condoleeza Rice of Chevron), and rode into office on the largesse of corporations with vested interests in the region (Enron). Suddenly, the prospects for a trans-Afghanistan oil and gas pipeline that would help ensure American dominance of Eurasia, described by Zbigniew Brezezinski as "The Grand Chessboard," began to improve. The Bush family's involvement in the Middle East and Central Asian oil politics, and its deep tiesNevermind, seems it didn't fit... more

Voting Question: My wife and I are thinking divorce over a misinterpreted text message?

About a year ago, I reconnected with an old friend from high school over facebook. We hadn't spoken to each other for almost 14 years. She found me on facebook, and like what a social networking site is for, it was nice to reconnect. After getting in touch, my old friend started asking me for advice about her husband who constantly leaves and comes back. I always gave her my two cents and told her I was there if she needed anything. I have always been the guy people come to for a solid and logical opinion. In my mind, I was just helping an old friend out, and sometimes she'd give me advice on my marriage too. I texted her a month ago saying, "I'm thinking about you," because I know she's going through a very tough time...We live miles apart, and someone with such a great heart, I feel badly about her situation. My wife looked through my phone and confronted me about the text message. She made a huge scene in front of our small children. I love my wife and she is the only one I love. I told her the truth, but yet she was still skeptical. She ended up telling her sister, and it travelled by mouth.. Now all her family thinks I'm an unfaithful husband. My wife has also spoken to my friend via phone and text message. She even checked my cell phone bill. She still doesn't believe me. I told her that if she couldn't trust me, our marriage has no solid foundation and I cannot live with someone who thinks I'm hiding things from behind her back. She has talked to me about to divorce and now I'm just so tired that I'll agree with anything she says. What do I do? I love my wife and my family. I don't want what we build to crumble over a misunderstanding. There were no problems in my marriage before this. I'd ask my friend things like what little things would make her happy? I deleted my friend from facebook. There is no contact whatsoever. My wife still isn't having it.I should add... In May, her friend told her I was HITTING on her. My wife is a beauty, her friend is just plain jane. We work in the same area and I offered her a ride home because we live two mins. away from each other. Her friend totally convinced herself that I was interested and then told my wife. I think this plays a big part in all of this. more

Resolved Question: Would a current mobile phone work in 1992 ?

If I travelled back in time to when GSM digital mobile phones were first introduced (I believe 1992?). Would a current phone e.g. an iPhone or any current model work on the digital network? Only for voice and texting, nothing more elaborate. I imagine it would have to be registered on the network by the operator, and this might involve jumping through some hoops. Or is there something that would prevent it from working in that era ? more

Resolved Question: how do i turn off my phone network and all connections and just use my media card on my blackberry curve 8330?

i'm going on vacation in three days, and all my music is on my blackberry curve 8330 8gb media card that i have. i don't want to be charged ANYTHING while i'm gone. if this doesn't work i'm not even going to take my phone. i just need my music on my media card since i have around 7gb's of it and my ipod cant fit that. is there a way to disable just about everything on the blackberry except the media card to just use the music? i don't wanna be charged roaming, or even have my phone look for networks cause i know it searches when you leave the country. i want it all off so i can just use the music and not receive anything on my bill later. is it possible to do that on the blackberry curve 8330? cause i'm traveling from canada to florida and im driving, so i need my music and not get charged for anything. any help would be appreciated. i think there's a way with managing connections, but i'm not positive if that's 100% full proof. more

Voting Question: Can you advise me regarding Facebook issues?

I never had any interest or time for social networking sites until I found out that I can use them to market my small business. A friend set up a Facebook page under my name (not my business name) a couple of years ago, but I never used it. In the last week I set up a Twitter account in my business name (I don't want to give out my personal or business name here - these are general questions so it's not necessary to check them out to answer) and started posting classified ads on Oodle which I then published to Facebook and Twitter. I was happy with the results until . . . I started getting requests from friends and acquaintances to be my "friends on Facebook. I knew that the more "friends" you have, the more the word gets about your business and the more validation and importance you have on Facebook. I accepted most of the friend requests and sent out several of my own to family members and friends. Unfortunately, I "friended" a long-time friend who is retired, has a large bank account, and has a lot of time to post multiple long entries, photographs and videos on his Facebook page regarding his travels, political interests, and miscellaneous random thoughts. My Facebook page is now overrun with his entries and my ads are getting lost among them. Also, most of the family members I friended are in their 20's to mid-30's and are writing cute entries on their pages with the latest slang expressions describing music fests, job searches, wishes and hopes, etc. Needless to say, my page doesn't look very professional now. I had no idea that entries my "friends" made on their own pages would show up on my page. "Defriending" these people is not an option. I think I have figured out a fix. I can set up another page under my Facebook account in my business name; I want to do this correctly, so here are my questions: 1. A competitor has a facebook page under his own name and it has just his personal interests, activities, education, etc., -- he doesn't make any entries. He has 13 friends and no posts are showing up from their Facebook pages. I'm thinking the reason for this is that he specified that his Facebook page is a business page. I know a different set of rules applies to business pages. Or maybe other people's Facebook entries don't show up until you start making your own entries. What I want is a page that showcases my business and my classified ads and allows me to have "friends," but does not show posts that "friends" write on their Facebook pages. It may not be possible, but I would also like to deactivate the "Comments" feature that is under each ad to prevent my site from being "vandalized" by jerks or unhappy clients (unfortunately, sometimes I do business with someone who has unreasonable expectations -- most of my clients are very happy and become repeat customers) posting negative comments about the products I sell. Is it possible to set up a Facebook page like this? 2. Do I need to go through any specific Facebook procedure to make sure that people can find my business Facebook page by typing my business name in their search engine without them having to go through my personal Facebook page? I think I will keep the personal Facebook page and just make a comment here and there every so often to keep in touch with family and friends (I accessed the Facebook page of a relative by marriage and discovered that it was her birthday, so I wished her a happy birthday and realized that this might be a good way to stay in the loop with family members and friends). 3. Do you have any tips or advice about business pages on Facebook? If so, please include them. Thank in advance. I'm sorry this turned out to be so long. more

Resolved Question: Cell phone? Planning trip to South America (Buenos Aires, Santiago, Cusco, and a 4th undetermined) city.?

I use Sprint, and their travel rates are sort of ridiculous. Not to mention that in the US they use a CDMA network, meaning I would have to rent/buy a GSM compatible phone to travel abroad with. Furthermore, I will be in multiple countries/cities for varying spans of time. So my question has multiple parts. 1) Do I need a cell phone at all? Would I be better off just using internet cafes for skyping back home? 2) If I do need a cell phone, am I better off renting a new phone in each city for 2 weeks or so? Or just picking international coverage on my current phone? more

Resolved Question: Is my husband that stupid or does he just not care?

My husband of eights year continues to emotionally hurt me. We have been to individual counseling, marriage counseling and recently had a two week separation. Prior to getting back together, I spoke to him regarding many of the issues that we have been having, including my insucurities surrounding an ex-girlfriend that he has mentioned a lot through out our relationship. He talked about her when we were dating and said that it was because of distance and nothing else that they were not still together. He mentioned her on our honeymoon and said he always thought he was going to marry her, but was happy he married me. Shortly after we were married, he tried to find her through the internet after I asked him not too. He was unable to locate her at that time, and I have told him that I feel like the search has never been over. Whenever we travel to or around North Carolina (where she went to school) he always brings her up. I told him that if we were to move forward, he needed to reassure me that he is over her and that I wouldn't hear about her again, or he needed to take this opportunity to tell me how he feels and go get some closure. He told me that if she were standing next to me, he would still choose me. The next day we decided to make a fresh start and ended the separation. Not two weeks later, I find out that he became friends with her on a social networking site. They haven't spoken in years and now, after everything that we have been through, he decides it would be a good idea to be friends with her?? When I asked him about it, he said that he was going to talk to me about it and it wasn't a big deal. I don't have any problems with him being friends with anyone else but her. I feel like it was worth the risk of our family for him to have the opportunity to reconnect with her. He says that he will take her off his friends list and that it was stupid, but he loves me. But how can that be true when our marriage is falling apart, and I JUST talked to him about this person. Is his really that stupid or does he really just not care about my feelings??We got back together around the fourth of July and he became friends with her this past weekend. So one month later after getting back together. Also, we have two small kids, so it's not that easy for me to just leave. To be fair, one more piece of information, she found him and he agreed to be friends, so this time he wasn't seeking her out. Just want to give everyone as much information as possible. Really don't know what to do! more

Resolved Question: How to activate a new carrier's sim card?

So I have an iPhone 4, here in the US. I am traveling to the UK and have found lots of sim cards (yes micro) on ebay. I would like to be able to purchase a sim ahead of time, set up a pay as you go account, and just swap the card out when i get there to avoid crazy ATT charges and still use my electronic appendage. The ideal plan is the Orange Camel plan, pay as you go, includes a bunch of data and only 7p to call home. So the question is, if i get an orange sim off of ebay, what happens next? Do I then just call Orange and say this is the plan i want? I have also seen Orange Camel sims, but they are not micro sims.....so now I am just confused. In a nutshell: I want to get to the Uk, and simply swap the sims, so I am on the local network. Preferrably Orange or Vodafone. What is the best way to do that?I know how to physically swap it, that is easy. I want to know what to do once i do that if i dont get it directly from the carrier. They don't seem to want to ship to the US, but someone on ebay will. more

Resolved Question: What do you think over in Mexico there be allegations of brutality and theft by federal officials of illegals?

Eighty illegals detained Control operations by Mexico’s immigration agency in the area of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec resumed for the first time since the end of March. [Operations had ceased at that time because of allegations of brutality and theft by federal officials against illegal aliens riding trains in that area.] Aboard a train coming from Arriaga, Chiapas, they found 80 migrants “of diverse nationalities from countries of Central America.” http://www.noticiasnet.mx/portal/principal/redada-del-inm-contra-migrantes Seventy-nine “undocumented” found Mexican federal police intercepted 79 “undocumented” Central Americans who were traveling in two passenger buses in the state of Oaxaca. They included 49 men and 6 women from Guatemala, 9 men & 4 women from Honduras, and 6 men and one woman from El Salvador. http://rotativo.com.mx/migracion/interceptan-en-oaxaca-a-79-indocumentados-centroamericanos/36748/html/ What Mexico says about America what do you think ? They can shoot you for not carrying your papers Any minor transgression by those who have Latin appearance can end up with orange colored shackles and electric bracelets meant to locate them. And the law applies not only in Arizona but in the entire United States. Separation of families, unjustified detentions due to a Latin aspect, uniforms and shackles like criminals, and even freedom to shoot the migrants for not carrying their legal documentation are some of the realities for those who cross the border in search of the “American dream.” All the preceding was shared with us by Heydi Gonzalez, coordinator of the Nicaraguan Network of the Migration Civil Society, who added that the law which recently came into effect criminalizes irregular migration and legalizes violations of human rights. Gonzalez deems that the immigration law’s focus on security violates peoples’ human rights, “Starting because the entrance procedures are excessive and expensive, (and) these force persons to use irregular means, almost always turning to networks of people traffickers. Thus, women end up as victims during that trip, raped, and men die under different circumstances trying to reach the United States border, but who is pursuing the terrible “Z’s” (and) the smuggling networks?” Gonzalez also said, “Migrants keep going to the United States despite all these controls and the militarization of the borders. Something that will continue to happen as long as conditions and opportunities are not improved in our countries.” http://www.elnuevodiario.com.ni/nacionales/80488 more

Resolved Question: Intro Business Questions?

With your new found business savvy you have decided to take on the challenges of becoming an entrepreneur and have opened a Marketing and Communications firm call ‘Rev Communications’. The Rev Business model involves creating marketing plans and consulting businesses on what their advertisements, promotions and marketing messages should be to optimize their marketing expenditures. You have surveyed the local market, secured the funding, leased a building and have the foundation in place to start your company and make big dollars. Now you must take on Human Resource activities. You will require a staff of six people; Two business development officers to find, meet and communicate with clients. Business development employees should have in-depth experience in networking with private businesses and governments and must be very strong with communication skills; one to one conversations, group meetings, presentations, interacting with government officials, etc. BD officers must also be well-organized, be clean cut and presentable and must also be willing to travel extensively. One BD officer will be the senior development boss with the second person serving as supporting staff. Three graphic designers to develop concepts, sketch ideas, develop marketing slogans, etc. Graphic Designers must be well schooled and experienced in all the latest IT programs and technologies (‘photoshop’, adobe PDF readers, publisher, etc) and industry experience is a huge advantage. Designers must be reachable 24-7 as customers requiring communications are usually demanding and make requests at the ‘last minute’. The designers should know how to design logos, be creative with slogans, be highly skilled with printers and scanners and should also be frugal in using company resources (paper, colored ink, etc.). Rev communications will have a senior graphic designer in charge of all concept development, followed by a junior designer. The third designer will be a young student, preferably directly from school with little experience and lots of energy (who can be paid a very modest wage to save company costs). An office assistant to manage calls, emails, pay bills, monitor spending and budgets, etc. There is no requirement for this person to have communications/marketing experience as they will deal with generic office administration matters. This person should be experienced in an office setting and comfortable with managing and flagging budget lines. The office assistant must also be efficient and effective in letter drafting, file management, email correspondence, preparing mail-outs and invoices, handling logistics for meetings and conferences, etc. Given the positions above, answer the following questions; A. What would your recruiting strategy be for the Business Development, Graphic Design and Office Manager positions? Where would you post the job offerings? Would your recruiting be internal or external? B. How would you select your human resources – using interviews, tests (online or paper)? Explain. C. An important HR consideration is evaluating your Rev employees. Would you choose the simple ranking, forced distribution, graphic rating scale or critical incident method as means of evaluating your people? Could you use the same option for all six employees or would one be preferred over another depending on the job? D. Everyone loves payday. Explain how you would pay your six employees using one or a combination of the following; salary based on industry standard, merit pay, skill-based pay, knowledge-based pay, sales commission, gain-sharing program, profit-sharing plan. E. In many cases potential employees are as attracted to the benefits package as they are the salary level. For Rev Communications would you see the value in establishing a wellness program and/or a cafeteria-style benefit plan? (Keep in mind these programs can get to be very expensive, especially for a start-up company such as Rev). F. Employee turnover is a fact of life in the private sector business world. What would Rev’s Replacement chart look like? more

Resolved Question: Life Decision.........................?

I will try to keep this short. I have a very important life choice to make. I am 24 years old. I travel for my job (once every two years). Right now I am in a place in my life where I am pretty exhuasted, mostly emotionally exhuasted (from a break up a year ago and a number of other things) but also searching for deeper meaning and "what I really beleive" in this world. I am feeling generally alone and I would like to stabilize my life. I am just breaking into my profession. I have been offered 2 jobs which will take me into different places in my life. 1. At a phenomenal company with great benefits, (which would allow me to see a therapist if I needed to) in a great part of the world and an exciting city. The work is streneous but fulfilling. Fabulous colleagues and training for the future workplace. I know nobody in this city. Have to start over new. 2. At a pretty bad company, in a part of the world I adore. This part of the world is dangerous and both the company and the country are stressful and frustrating. I have no benefits and awful insurance at this job. The up-side is that my job is not strenuous and I would have free-time to feel like I'm not "running on a treadmill." I have a network of friends there. The culture interests me more. This job will not lead to the best career future right out of there, but my experience will be respected. What do you think? I just want to do what's best for me- wholistically. more
