Bargain Vacation Questions asked

Resolved Question: Economics Question, Private Solutions to Externalities?

Consider a village with a river. The village has a hiking lodge whose visitors use the river for recreation. The village also has a chemical plant that creates industrial waste, which it dumps into the river. This pollutes the river and makes it a less desirable vacation destination. That is, the chemical plant's effluent decreases the hiking lodge's profit. Suppose that the chemical plant could use an alternative production method involving water recycling. This would reduce the pollution in the river to levels safe for recreation, and the hiking lodge would no longer be affected. If the chemical plant uses the recycling method, the chemical plant's profit is $1,500 per week and the hiking lodge's profit is $1,700 per week. If the chemical plant does not use the recycling method, the chemical plant's profit is $2,000 per week and the hiking lodge's profit is $1,000 per week. 1) Total profit (the chemical plant's profit and the hiking lodge's profit combined) is highest when the recycling production method is a) Not Use b) Used When the chemical plant uses the recycling method, the hiking lodge earns $1,700-$1,000=$700 more per week than it does with no recycling. Therefore, the hiking lodge should be willing to pay up the $700 per week for the chemical plant to use water recycling. However, the recycling method decreases the chemical plant's profit by $2,000-$1,500=$500 per week. Therefore, the chemical plant needs to be compensated at least $500 per week for it to use the recycling method. 2) Suppose the hiking lodge has the legal rights to the river. That is, the hiking lodge has the right to a clean (unpolluted) river. In this case, assuming the two firms can bargain at no cost, the chemical plant will a) Use b) Not Use the recycling method and will pay the hiking lodge a) between $500 and $700 b) between $0 and $200 c) Between $200 and 4500 d) $0 per week. 3) Now suppose the chemical plant has the legal rights to the river, including the right to pollute it. In this case, assuming the two firms can bargain at no cost, the chemical plant will a) Use b) Not Use the recycling method, and the hiking lodge will pay the chemical plant a) $0 b) between $500 and $700 c) between $200 and $500 d) between $0 and $200 per week. 4) Which of the following statements are correct? a) The hiking lodge will make the most profit when it has legal rights to a clean river, and the chemical plant will make the most profit when it has the legal rights to pollute the river. b) The chemical plant will only use the recycling method if the hiking lodge has the legal rights. c) The river will remain polluted regardless of who has the legal rights d) The hiking lodge will make the most profit when the checmical plant has the legal rights to pollute the river, and the chemical plant will make the most profit when the hiking lodge has legal rights to a clean river. e) The chemical plant will use the recycling method regardless of who has legal rights. more

Resolved Question: Are the Women Topless on European Beaches?

We are considering a vacation to Europe, if we can get some bargains. I am not quite sure where, it will depend on the prices. I have been told by friends that the women all go topless on the beaches. I have also been told that there is a lot of nudity on the beaches, that people change into their swimming clothes right on the beach, and that there is sometimes sex on the beaches. I looked at some travel books, and found words like “surprising to Americans” and “a different dress code”, but no real info. I have two teenage daughters and a teenage son. My family is kind of relaxed about clothes. My daughters take showers when my son is in the bathroom, and visa-versa. We change clothes together in hotel rooms. My son has seen me and my daughters naked many times, and my daughters have seen my son and husband naked many times. So I don’t think seeing a topless woman on the beach is a problem. I am concerned about nudity. It’s one thing in the family, but different with strangers. Also, if all the women are topless, are my daughters going to feel pressure to expose their breasts. Does anyone have any real experience so they can tell me what European beaches are really like. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Is it time to start a carpet cleaning business?

My sister-in-law has been the foreperson of a carpet cleaning business since 2000. The owner is a friend from way back to elementary school. Long story short, the business started in 1999, the owner was the operator in those days. In 2000, my sister-in-law lost her job. Her friend offered her part time work after her unemployment ran out and she couldn't find anything better than about $6.50 per hour. Her friend gave her $8 per hour. 10 years later, she's getting $9 per hour. Heck, in 2006 she was getting $8.75. Using the BLS calculator, $8 in 2000 is the same as $10.14 today. http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl no matter how you spin it, her real wages have gone down about 15%. Meanwhile they are billing more than ever. They raise the rates 10-15% every year. The labor costs go down and down. The owner and her husband do some "work" in their home office. They take about 5 weeks vacation and dump it on their highest paid, longest term, only white employee. They own a 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe that set them back about $30,000. They have a 2010 Kia Borrego SUV that set them back about $37,000. They both get a new car every 1-2 years. Just works out they both got cars this year. I believe the SUV belongs to the business. What the business actually uses is two 2002 Kia Cinco mini station wagons. My sister-in-law doesn't own a car. She rides her bike to and from work in the good weather. In the winter, she rides the bus. Last February we had a wicked snow storm. More than a foot of snow by noon. One more job, that said it would be OK to reschedule. The owner said no. My sister-in-law didn't get back to the office (house) until after 4:00 because of the worsening weather. The bus system shut down around 2pm. She asked if she could borrow the company car. No. She ended up walking over an hour to my house and my wife drove her home the next day. I was stuck about 75 miles away myself. Today we discovered the owner just dropped $15,000 on a used boat, a bargain from a desperate seller. She's living so good. The business has about $15,000 in assets. It blows my mind. We've got about a spare $4,500 in the checking account. She could get about $2,000 from her credit card (at like 21% interest). We have enough credit to get a reasonable loan. She knows everything about this business. We have enough to make things happen. She works her tail off and gets less than $20,000 per year. No vacation, no health benefits, no 401k, nothing. I've done this work. It is physically hard. I can't see her body being able to take this once she hits 50, which is only 13 years away. She's worked hard (for a friend) and has basically nothing to show for it. Doesn't seem fair. I don't my personal feelings or my wife's feelings sway us. The busiest season is September to November. We could be ready by then. My wife has done this about 20 times. I've done it about 100 times and we'd help too. She's done this maybe 35,000+ times. Experience is not really a problem. What's your opinion? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: For my summer vacation I am coming to Houston! Random pick. Whats fun over there?? Good shopping?

Resolved Question: Why do a large percentage of people dislike unions?

I feel that workers should have more rights, family/work balance, pensions, good wage and health care. A lot of people feel that the employer should be the master 100% and the employees rights should be granted by him/her only and not guaranteed. I come from the view that the economy is strongest with more workers earning family sustaining wages and more families being able to send their kids to college. I might be a bit biased as I am studying to be a school counselor and will be in a union but I really feel like they are good for the country. Most people do not have the desire to do anything they can to become super wealthy. I honestly feel that most Americans just want to have a comfortable middle class life (you know house, car/s, a vacation each year, college for their kids and life insurance for them when they are gone) So my question is whats wrong with collectively bargaining for fair wages, benefits and working conditions? Where I live I always read in the local papers how teachers are paid too much. The top teachers make 90,000-100,000 where I live but after 15-16 years experience a bachelors, a masters and 30-60 credits beyond that. The average teacher does 52 hours of work a week if you combine in school and at home prep. I think most Americans are more similar than different, conservative, progressive, moderate, apathetic etc. We all want to provide for our kids and have stability. Conservatives focus on taxes people like me are more concerned with wages keeping up with inflation, gas prices being reasonable, etc, but we all want the same thing in the end.robot I here exactly what you are saying. I was telling someone today how disgusting those teachers are and how it tarnishes the profession. I never heard about an auto worker making 80 an hour and i can understand how if that is true, that it would irk you, I think thats a bit ridiculous myself. What I am saying though is I don't feel teachers begrudge others the benefits of their profession and yet I always hear people begrudging teachers for having good pensions (which in PA they contribute 7.5% of every paycheck into) and decent salaries. Each college profession is different but a teacher/school counselor will never make what a businessman/woman does, a lawyer does and especially what a doctor does. And yet I don't begrudge them their success, they earn in and they deserve a big salary (especially doctors). more

Resolved Question: Why can't we have an equal wealth society in USA as described below?

Here is how to make it work 1) EVERYBODY will be forced to work for the greater good of humanity or else they will be arrested and punished and beat with physical pain. If they work, they will enjoy free housing, free healthcare, free food, free education, free vacation time each year. 2) Everybody will have an exam when they turn 18 that will be used for the Government to determine their career path, weighing in the demands and needs of the citizen. They will then be forced to work in such areas, which will include free training in those areas, including doctors (who will receive free training in lieu of work during med school years. 3) Everybody will be trained as a soldier in the event of war. 4) Who will lead this Government? Every year, a lottery will be drawn out to select which citizens will be the rulers for that year. Therefore, most citizens will get a chance to be part of the ruling class one of the years during their lives.....during that year....they are in charge of Government operations instead of their job. NOBODY will be forever ruler....EVERYBODY will have to work.....EVERYBODY who is not imprisoned will receive EXACTLY the same treatment and the same wealth EXACTLY NOBODY will be allowed to leave the country for more than their vacation pay....and if they do not return home, then they will be hunted down and arrested from wherever they are....and if they turn home, they can plea bargain but will still do time could this country work? Also, at certain ages everyone will get sweet breaks. If you are 18-19, 29, 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, 89......at these ages...you get to live in a special lodge with luxury and joy and happiness. the 18-19 year olds will get a dorm with dry erase pens on the walls and free college courses on any subject they want without being graded more

Resolved Question: Inexpensive tropical vacation ideas that are not JUST sitting on the beach!?

I am looking for vacation ideas and I am thinking either the Caribbean or Mexico. However, here are my issues: 1. I live in Kansas City MO and do not want to spend an arm and a leg to get to wherever I am going. So hopefully this destination will have enough flights going there that I have some chance to find a bargain. 2. My wife and I prefer to be pretty active on vacation and don't really enjoy just sitting around soaking up the sun (I have very pale skin and burn in the blink of an eye). Therefore we will need there to be activities beyond just hitting the beach and/or hitting the bars. 3. Because we are frugal (you might even say cheap) we do not really enjoy shopping for tourist junk, we would prefer our entertainment options not be limited to renting expensive jet-skis or paying a tour promoter through the nose for watersports. Our favorite vacation experiences in the past have been those involving epic scenery, historical attractions, good food, activities like hiking, etc. To be honest we have done more vacationing in the mountains in the past because they seem to be a better fit for us, but I am hoping to try something new. We took a cruise a couple years ago and enjoyed it. We saw Chichen Itza in Mexico, which was the high point of the trip. We had hoped to do some snorkeling during our visit to Cozumel, but the weather did not allow it. I guess I like the idea of spending a week in Mexico or the Caribbean, but worry that we might spend a lot of money for something that will not live up to our expectations. So now that you know a bit about our preferences, I am hoping someone might suggest a destination. Ideas? more

Resolved Question: What's the better bargain: local travel agent or online?

We're thinking of taking either a cruise or all-inclusive vacation w/ 4 adults & 1 toddler - 2 or 3 yrs ols depending what month we go. Are there major benefits to using a local travel agent, or is it possible to find as good or better deals from online sites these days? This would be our first cruise, so input on kid-friendly lines would also be appreciated. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Cheap Vegas ideas or tips?

I'm looking for ways to stretch our vacation bucks. I've already got smokin' deals on the hotel and flight (midweek, frequent flier miles). Now I'd like to find the best bargains on shows, meals, etc. on the strip. Not looking for low end stuff, just good values at nice places. Where can I find the best coupons or web discount codes? Places where drinks aren't terribly pricey? Etc. Also (never been there before) are there grocery and/or liquor stores within a mile or so of the strip? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my short story? I got bored and wrote it, im in the 9th grade.?

When I recall some of the best times in my life, I often think about a little trip I took back in the summer of '04. If made into a movie, this story could be considered a drama, comedy, or even a romance tale, but most would consider it all three rolled into one. It came about suddenly and unexpectedly. My friend of many years, Bert, and his mother decided to join several of their friends at the last minute on a trip to their favorite vacation spot, Destin, Florida. I was then invited along by Bert as we did most everything together. Besides the planning that comes along with most vacations, it started out very typical. We loaded up the car on a Friday afternoon, and planned to leave the next morning, however, at 3 AM we all three, (Bert, myself, and Bert's mom), found ourselves wide awake and, figuring we wouldn't get much sleep anyway, decided to depart for Florida right then and there. After a quick stop at Hardee's to fulfill our late night munchies, we were on our way. To take up the time we decided to watch some movies on a portable DVD player we had brought along, which in theory was a good idea, but not in the backseat with Bert. He was quickly asleep and had taken up most of the room. I tried to keep my own space, but within 30 minutes he had sprawled out all over the backseat, including on top of me, and I couldn't stand it. I decided to move up to the front seat with Bert's mom, which wasn't so bad, except for the fact that for the next eight hours, of which about 3 of them I had the pleasure of sleeping, she forced me to listen to some of the worst music I have ever experienced in my entire life. I'm still not quite sure who it was singing, but a female country singer giving her rendition of famous Elvis songs has never sounded so bad. At about noon my ears were finally granted some relief when Bert awoke and commanded his mom to turn on some new music and stop torturing me. The next few hours were not so bad. I had good music, someone to talk to, and some nice ocean views. Even with all this, the time couldn't come soon enough for us to get out of the car and get our vacation started. Right around 3PM we finally rolled into the parking lot of our motel, The Ocean Moon Inn. I couldn't wait to get unpacked, get poolside, and get some tropical drinks in my hand...sure, I got all that, but I also got something I didn't bargain for. As I stepped out of the car the first thing I had to do was stretch, as it had been a very long and cramped ride. As I was doing so I gazed up to take in what would be my home for the next week, and as I swung my view from left to right, there she was, sitting with a group of friends on the staircase leading up to the second floor. We made eye contact for what seemed to be forever, and then she glanced away. My heart thumped, I felt a sudden rush of adrenaline, and then I quickly grabbed my bags and made my way down a hallway and out of sight to think about what had just happened. I wasn't sure if Bert had seen her or not, I was sure he noticed the loud group of mostly boys surrounding one or two girls, but I wasn't sure if he had really noticed the one that I had, or the way that she looked at me. The motel was a sort of "L" shape. It had two stories, and was quite small with only about 30 rooms. They all opened up to the pool which was in the center of the "L". It was an outdoor motel with no lobby, no indoor hallways, no convention rooms, as in you were either inside a bedroom, or you were outdoors. Bert followed me as we quickly made our way to room 205. We were familiar with its location as we had both stayed in it only a year before, along with Bert having stayed in it with his family for nearly the past 5 years. We opened the door and a cool breeze rushed us from inside the room. Bert unknowingly plopped down onto one of the beds, and rolled over as if to go to sleep. I stood there for a few moments and then blurted out, "Did you see that girl?" "What girl," said Bert, his voice muffled by the pillow his face was planted in. "The one at the top of the steps!" Bert rolled over, "Which one at the top of the steps...the dark haired one?" I nodded my head. "Yeah, what about her?" said Bert.” Did you think she was hot?" I didn't reply. I just stood there with a "DUH" look on my face. A few more seconds passed and finally Burt assured me, "She wasn't that great." Dismissing the idea entirely and rolling back over. For the next hour or two we relaxed, watched MTV, and ate Cheetos...correction, Bert relaxed, watched MTV, I also ate the Cheetos (and some Ho-Ho's), but I couldn't do anything but think about those few seconds that I made eye contact with the girl on the stairs and the feeling that she gave me, even though I didn't even know her. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, as Bert obviously didn't feel the same way as I did, but I couldn't get her out of my head. I wond more

Voting Question: What rights do I have after my caw union and my management sell my soul for a settlement .?

I was a bargaining tool for some union rep to get her own way. It was arbitrated into a deal that reeked of self righteous criteria only.Nothing was changed in the contract, she just got her own way. Using the union dollars for her own benefit.I am now expected to take a huge cut in pay, change my hours ,and basically be demoted to a job that I chose to leave 6 years before. I am a single mother of 4 and I cant afford to take any cut in pay.I have taken courses to uphold my job and continue to be upgraded. I am essential to the O.R. to staff vacation and sick time. I have worked part time in this dept. for 6 years and have earned the right to be in this position. What can I do about an arbitration ruling that states if the "spoiled union rep" gets her permanent modified duties lifted from wsib she gets my job and I go back in time. She will have to be trained and orientated . It takes about 11/2 years before a person is comfortable to be left alone to work solo. This is not a highly skilled job , but it is essential to the operating room, especially in a time of crisis, that you know the job. more

Resolved Question: I need a advice.F1 student. Shoplifting.?

I am a international student and I have been going to school for 2 years in the US. Last December, I did shoplifting which cost about 30 bucks at a grocery store. The police caught me, and he took my fingerprints, copy of my passport, and identical pictures. After that, he gave me a show up paper to court and released me. I went to the court and I pled bargain and not guilty. The judgeman said that if i pay 200 bucks to the court, and I dont do any crime until this July 2009, the court can accept my plead. Now my court record shows that i m in diversion. The woman who made my court record said that they dont hold any accident in my file, so dont worry. This Friday, I will go back to my country during winter vacation and I will come back next January 2010. Could I reenter the US without any problems? I will have my court record with me at the airport so if I show it, immigration officers could allow me to reenter the US?Yes, this is s really stupid action. I'm really sorry. I am so homesick and I still dont know how to communicate with American people so i was so depressed at the time. Mr. TX, I have a question. What does it mean "unless you pled to felony charges which I doubt"? more

Resolved Question: Best tour guide for Morocco?

We agree Hassan Bouaouina(gutentagdiewelt@gmail.com) is the best tour guide in Morocco. My family and I recently returned from two weeks in Morocco using Hassan for our first 8 days and then doing Marrakech on our own. Until this trip we had always traveled independently and never thought of using a guide. However for Morocco we felt we could use some help and Hassan was all that and more. At first I thought his prices were high as many riads stated you could get a local guide for $50 a day and some other tour companies were slightly less. However we quickly learned that you get what you pay for and Hassan was a bargain. Other companies may give you a different guide in each place and not all will be good or will speak English well. Local city guides don't have the depth of knowledge to add the cultural information. Having one guide that we could get comfortable with and who could get to know us made a huge difference. As others have mentioned Hassan speaks perfect English not only to communicate but he gets the nuances and jokes as well. Hassan is highly educated and knows a great deal about his country, the sites, people, religion and culture and I can definitely say we learned more on this vacation than on any other. Hassan is good about being on time and unless I am mistaken washed his car each night. What we didn't realize when we initially booked is that we would have a totally private tour from sunrise to sunset. Hassan took care of all details well beyond what we expected. While in Fes, we would tour all day and then he would take us back to rest. After resting Hassan would return to drive us to dinner and then come back and pick us up after dinner and drive us back to our riad. He insisted on walking us to our door each time even though it was a one way alley and there was no way to get lost. That's just the kind of professional he is and how seriously he takes his work. I don't think there was a restaurant that we went to that he didn't personally choose the best table, best view or coolest location. In the country he always made sure the bathrooms were clean and if not, found out where the "tourist" bathrooms were. We couldn't recommend a guide more completely and are confident that you will have a memorable trip if you hire Hassan as your guide. more

Resolved Question: pls help ... already have the answer but only as a second check?

Resolved Question: What do you think about Roman Polanski?

What Polanski Deserves By Eugene Robinson Tuesday, September 29, 2009 Hasn't Roman Polanski suffered enough? Didn't he endure all those cool, gray, rainy Paris winters? Wasn't he forced -- well, not forced, but strongly enticed -- to subsist all those years on overpriced fare served up by haughty waiters in Michelin-starred restaurants? Didn't he survive for decades having his vacation options limited, essentially, to the grim monotony of the South of France? I've got a better question: Shouldn't Polanski and his many apologists give us a break? I'm a huge fan of Polanski's work. "Chinatown" is one of my favorite movies of all time, "Rosemary's Baby" is a masterpiece, and he richly deserved the Oscar he won as best director for "The Pianist." He's a great artist. Maybe his next film will be a prison movie. Brilliant auteur or no, Polanski has been a fugitive from U.S. justice since 1978. And there was certainly no artistic merit in the crime he acknowledged committing: During a photo shoot at the Los Angeles home of his friend and "Chinatown" star Jack Nicholson, Polanski plied a 13-year-old girl with champagne and drugs and had sex with her. That is grotesque. In general, I agree with the European view that Americans tend to be prudish and hypocritical about sex. But a grown man drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl? That's not remotely a close call. It's wrong in any moral universe -- and deserves harsher punishment than three decades of gilded exile. Polanski went on the lam after pleading guilty to the crime. He had a deal with prosecutors under which he would essentially walk out of the courtroom a free man -- he had spent 42 days in prison undergoing psychiatric evaluation, and the arrangement was that he would be sentenced to time served. But Polanski got wind that the judge in the case, said to be something of a publicity hound, was going to refuse to honor the plea bargain and instead impose a prison term. So the director skipped town and surfaced in France, where authorities ruled that his crime wasn't covered by extradition treaties with the United States. He was arrested Sunday in Zurich, where he had traveled to accept an award -- and where the extradition treaty does cover his crime. Assuming that Polanski puts up a legal fight, it could be months or even years before he is sent back to the United States. The Justice Department was right to have Polanski nabbed at the Zurich airport and should pursue the case to the end. We've waited this long; we can wait a little longer. Polanski has dual French-Polish citizenship, and officials in Paris and Warsaw are outraged. Which makes me outraged. What's their beef? That Polanski is 76? That he makes great movies? That he only fled to escape what might well have been an unjust sentence? Sorry, mes amis, but none of this matters. If you decide to become a fugitive, you accept the risk that someday you might get caught. Much has been made of the fact that Polanski's victim, now 45, has said she no longer feels any anger toward him and does not want to see him jailed. But it's irrelevant what the victim thinks and feels as a grown woman. What's important is what she thought and felt at age 13, when the crime was committed. Those who argue that there's something unjust about Polanski's arrest are essentially accepting his argument that it's possible for a 13-year-old girl, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, to "consent" to sex with a man in his 40s. Or maybe his defenders are saying that drugging and raping a child is simply not such a big deal. As far as I'm concerned, it's a huge deal. Even in France, it should be a big deal. This isn't about a genius who is being hounded for flouting society's hidebound conventions. It's about a rich and powerful man who used his fame and position to assault -- in every sense, to violate -- an innocent child. And it's about a man who ran away rather than face the consequences of his actions. Before any sentence could be imposed, he absconded like a weasel to live a princely life in France. That's the sort of protagonist, a great director like Polanski must realize, who doesn't deserve a happy ending. eugenerobinson@washpost.com The writer will be online to chat with readers at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Resolved Question: Does anybody know that without the "Socialism" inherent in the American system since the 1930's...?

....you'd still be working 6 days a week. 10 hours a day. with NO vacations (except possibly Christmas). No job healthcare or pensions. No possibility for collective bargaining. No protection from getting beaten up by company goons if you did try to bargain for better conditions. No protections against huge companies setting prices and forcing everybody else out of business. THIS is the Utopia anarchist conservatives want to return us to!Max - the Unions who did many of these things were all labelled "Communist" organizations by Hoover and others for wanting these things, just like they're calling Democrats today for wanting to make life better for Americans. more

Resolved Question: shoplifting F1 student?

I am a international student and I have been going to school for 2 years in the US. Last December, I did shoplifting which cost about 30 bucks at a grocery store. The police caught me, and he took my fingerprints, copy of my passport, and identical pictures. After that, he gave me a show up paper to court and released me. I went to the court and I pled bargain and not guilty. The judgeman said that if i pay 200 bucks to the court, and I dont do any crime until this July 2009, the court can accept my plead. Now August 2009, my criminal record is guilty or innocent? When I fill out some application forms, I must show my criminal record honestly?? And I am thinking to go back to my country during this winter vacation and come back in ths US next January. Could I reenter the US again?? I'm very sorry that my english is not good and my crime. more

Resolved Question: Married 12 years...Is my marriage over?

I've been married for 12 years, have 3 children. My husband snores and for this reason we began sleeping separately 5 years ago. We are lucky if we have sex twice a month. Our married life has been 100% devoted to our children as we live away from family and never have had some body to stay with our children so we can go out on dates. I don't trust just anybody to watch my children. He hasn't told me I look good, or pretty in months. He just asks me how he looks. He buys himself clothes every week. Our closet is 70% his clothes, 30% mine. He began a business a few months ago, besides his 9 year old job and now my children and I see him only on Sundays and a couple of hours each night after he gets home from work. I've realized that he seldom takes us out to a good restaurant, he says we're five and it becomes expensive, so every Sunday we end up at the same cheapest chinese buffet restaurant in town. But when it comes to his meetings with his business partners ( a nephew and his brother in law) he goes out to lunch with them to the most expensive places once a week... He does give me presents on my birthday and christmas, but outside these dates, if I want some thing, he will buy it for me, but I have to ask him for it. He won't take the initiative and buy it for me without me asking. He is a good father, and he is a good husband, but in his attitude more so than materially, he has provided us with a life of limitations. His attitude is that of a person who never has enough money. Our first ever real vacation happened just 4 months ago -in 12 years. I don't know if it's a lot of money or not, but he gives me $200.00 a month to take the children to burger king or to buy them candy or rent a movie or to buy a present in case we are invited to a friend's party. I have a part time job organizing and sending files to the company for which he works, in other words, he's my boss and pays me $400 monthly, and although I am not a person that goes shopping at all, I am always looking for bargains and specials IF I truly need to buy some thing. But honestly, those $600.00 a month don't go a long way considering they cover the recreation needs of three children and maybe lunch with my friends once a week. Am I missing some thing here? What should I do? Is this worth fighting for?P.S. Thank you to everybody, I truly appreciate your answers!I have told him each and every thing that I have pointed out here. But he thinks there is nothing wrong. more

Resolved Question: controling and manipulative ex husband....how to seek justice.?

My life after divorce.....Someone please help. Habitually late in picking up and dropping off the kids ( without a phone call) kids are ALWAYS tardy for school. I have no transportation ..but he expect me to drop off the kids ....if I do not find a way to drop them off ...He simply goes without seeing them . 3 Day weekends / vacations ..Claims he cannot take them...so I have no choice but to have the kids stay with me ( I get a friendly reminder every a year ..not a 30 day notice that he will not see the kids on those days) I get a job and place 1 child in daycare...He has never payed his half so the daycare pulls my kids out, and I can no longer work. ( this happened twice already!) I get my bartenders license, to eliminate the cost of daycare....he picks up/ drops off or is a no show...and I loose my job. Holidays are odd years me and even years him....now...NO LONGER WANTS holidays with the kids I got evicted from my apartment because child support was not paid in a timely matter....I co habitate with my fiance, and loose my alimony. My ex claims all the kids ( there's 5 of them) on his taxes...I only can get earned income credit. My ex gets the stimulus tax refund...I get nothing. The ex has NEVER helped with cloths or shoes for the kids. He has NEVER TAKEN the kids to Dr appointments nor desist appointments If my ex is mad at me....he simply not see the children....often 3 weeks at a time...if he does see them they get emotionally and physically abused ( especially the older ones) DSS has been notified. He left a salary paying job to strictly commission. I receive only $300 per week to support a family of 6....I attempted to get an increase in child support because he made 7k more one year...The court thought that was not enough and to come back when he makes 10k or more. My ex has never taken the kids on federal holidays, or on school days off ..By the way....He lives in a 1 bedroom apartment, the boys are in one room, and my girl is in a walk in closet. I STRONGLY BELIEVE that he has done this ridiculous living arrangement so that he takes the kids less and less. It took him 3 months to provide me with health insurance cards for the kids Please someone, anyone...help me. I am tiered of the manipulative and emotional and physically exhausting behavior I NEED to get a job and provide for my children, but my ex makes it impossible to keep a job. How can I get this madness to stop??? I have no money for a lawyer. PS even my fiance is starting to be controlled by him....My fiance and I are all kid-ed out ( to be quite honest) so he bargains and makes deals with the ex just so he would take the kids and we can get a weekend off .EVERY job that I had, I have lost due to my ex's lack of picking up/ dropping off in a timely matter/ not paying his child care expenses or simply being a no show. There are 5 children in 4 different schools.....There are just way too many half days/ snow days/ dr appointments to take care of, for a single mother. I am not complaining that I get $300 a week, ( at least it's something) . With the ex seeing the kids less and less and does not want to see the kids on any holiday. ....I simply want to get and keep a job and provide. more

Resolved Question: Does anyone have any good honeymoon ideas for someone on a budget?

I am getting married next spring and we are trying to figure out where we want to go for our honeymoon. We have managed to get the entire wedding due to family contributions and much bargain shopping under $2,500. However, we just bought a house, and I lost my job, so much of the money we had saved is now gone. I started a new job, but it's only enough to cover the bills, so replenishing that savings is highly unlikely. We were originally planning on going to Cozumel, Mexico for our honeymoon to go scuba diving (we are both avid divers) and enjoy the beach, but that is looking to be at the upper end of our budget now. We discussed Colorado, Chicago, and a couple other places, but aren't sure what we would do. Plus, if we have to pay all kinds of fees to do things, it won't save a ton of money. I hate camping, and cruises are out because we both would go stir crazy. We love being active, musicals, opera, history, and just exploring, but think that a week in any one place would be too much. We live in the Midwest, so a flight to pretty much anywhere is expensive. If anyone lives in a good vacation/honeymoon area and has any recommendations that would be great too. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: is this chapter one of my novel allright?

Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: For thereby some have entertained angels unawares. -King James Bible Hebrews 13:1-2 For when Death in all its ferocity has arrived on the scene, No bargaining can ward him off, no gifts, and no attempt at Sowing dissension, no force of arms, and no restraint. -anonymous 1 When I was very young, I met someone who is quite unique and frightening, someone who should have killed me by then but left me alive and safe. I was eight, a young stubborn child, he must have thought I am not capable of understanding and remembering, that a child like me would grow up and suppose the encounter as one of my childhood nightmares… He was very wrong indeed It was a very sunny day in the middle of summer. Not a single breeze was able to relieve me of the heat and I was sweating as my mother succeeded in forcing me in the backseat of the car. “I don’t want to go” I whined at her My mother, a tall lanky creature glared at me with her dark scrutinizing eyes “Catherine we had already talked about this” she replied sternly I hate it when my mother does that, glaring at me like I just did some sort of felony and forcing me to admit the wrongdoing I didn’t commit, well that is how it felt. Yet that day I was in an unusual bad mood and even her talent can’t easily bring me down. “But you lied to me! You said that I’m just taking a vacation! I heard you talking to papa last night! I heard you!” If I’d be just a few years older I might have stopped myself from babbling thoughtlessly at my mother. At the age of eight I should have understood the difficult situation my parents are trying to keep away from me. I should have been sensitive enough to see that my mother doesn’t like the turn of circumstances either. “Papa called and you talked and I heard you mama! You’re giving me away!” the words were out of my mouth even before I had the chance to think. Mama stopped short in getting inside the driver’s seat, stunned “You eavesdropped on us?” She was perplexed, I shrugged, too angry to reply. “…we’ll talk about this later’’ She muttered under her breath. Mama was about to start the car when a high piercing voice startled us I turned around and my suspicions were clarified as I saw a small plump woman running towards us. “WAIT FOR ME!” she exclaimed I giggled despite myself, the woman was Mrs. Assez. She was our French neighbor and a constant nuisance of the neighborhood as mama would say, but I like her, she always wears long thick robes and colorful beads and other adornments and strongly believes in superstitions That particular sunny day Mrs. Assez was wearing her usual outfit with matching feather boa slung over her shoulders despite the weather, it’s no wonder passersby stare after her. Mama on the other hand was not pleased. She started the engine in a hurry yet she was late as by this time Mrs. Assez arrived “Dieu merci!” she breathed “hello Maria, I believe you are going somewhere?” she asked even if the answer was already in front of her. Mama rolled her eyes “you can come with us Bianca” Mrs. Assez was clearly delighted and quickly took the seat beside me. “I am going to the grocery you know” she babbled on “Imprevu! This warm weather is getting on my nerves I hope you understand darling, I just can’t take the heat you know and an old woman like me I once heard that heat from the sun cooks the brains and helps develops cancer cells” I looked up quickly at this statement but I couldn’t see if she was serious or not. She chattered on as the car drove past the neighborhood, mama constantly saying the appropriate ahhs and oh yes’s during the one-sided conversation. Her talk was interesting for a while it managed to keep my thoughts from the transfer for a few moments. Unfortunately she noticed the huge bags lying by my feet “Oh? Maria is your daughter going somewhere?” she asked I can feel the blood running to my face. The past argument was slowly sinking back inside me. I can see Mama’s knuckles tighten convulsively on the wheel. She too was not satisfied with the change of subject but she replied politely “She’ll be with her father; we’re meeting him at the airport” Something with Mama’s voice didn’t convince our neighbor. “Yes. Yes” Mrs. Assez said quietly “I remember the summer vacations, but don’t you think it was quite late already dear? I mean, Cathy here has only a month left you know and summer holiday’s over.” “This time, it’s kind of …temporary Bianca” mama replied – Though she’s using her casual voice—gravely. Those days my mother was known to have an adulterous husband and the neighbors knew too well that it really changed her. She had been a hardworking loving wife until of course the divorce came and since then she had been quite sensitive about my father and well, a fiery temper. “Pardon me, Maria I nev more

Resolved Question: Would you be so nice as to read and comment my poem?

I wrote this this morning after watching an show where there was a hostage situation. I think I'm going to call it 'Cold Blood' I stand here wide eyed as I stare down the cylinder of the 5mm resting in your hands. This morning I pulled myself out of bed, crossing out yesterday and staring at today. Just another x on my wall. I thought… Then I saw you standing there as I walked through the doors, staring at the floor. Just another face. No second thought. Then gunshots. Screams. Shouts. Crying. Everyone on the floor. Hostages. Police refuse to negotiate. Not until you release five. But that’s not an option, is it? Three dead, one injured. Thirteen left. Thirteen bargaining chips. Then twelve. Somehow our lives weren’t worth as much as your five million dollars. Now the gun was pointed at me. Your voice was cold. ‘You’re next…’ Sure, I’d thought about death before. Even fancied it at times. But now all I could think about was my mother opening the door to see a police officer with my name on a death certificate. My father’s eyes looking down at my pale body in the morgue. ‘Yes, that’s my daughter…’ My friends. Smiles. Laughter yet to come. My dogs. I imagined getting to go on that vacation I’d saved up two years for. I was leaving Saturday. Three days away… Staring into your eyes, I searched for something that told me I wasn’t going to die. But then you smiled. And I watched as your finger pulled against the trigger. Slow motion. I saw my picture on the news report. Everyone else watching, indifferent. I was going to be a statistic. No one else would bat an eye. That’s when I heard the deafening blast. I pictured myself falling to the floor, mangled in a pool of my own blood. Then I felt the pain as your bullet ripped through my skull. I saw the blood in my eyes. And then I fell. Thanks for reading =) Comments? How to improve it? more

Resolved Question: Your feelings on organized labor union animus?

The recent meltdown of the US auto industry has resulted in many people putting the blame on the United Auto Workers union, citing several examples wherein workers are compensated for work not performed. I do not know their particulars, but there are several instances where the same is true in the rail industry, wherein trainmen and enginemen are compensated, very well in some instances, whilst sitting comfortably in front of the TV in the family room. But, there is valid argument for these types of “penalty claims,” as they are known, against the rail carriers who are party to national collective bargaining agreements that need to be considered to reach full understanding. One such instance is where there are Extra Board guarantees. The people on an extra board have no regular assignment, but work to cover regular assignments such as pool freight, local freight, helper pool, yard and local assignments when the people who regularly work such assignments are absent due to illness, vacation or personal business. The summer months are when vacation vacancies are most prevalent. During this time an extra man may work a yard assignment today, the next two days in pool freight, lay-in for a day, work a yard assignment next, and so on. Conversely, in winter months the extra board may turn very slowly and often times results in extra board people laying in for several days at a whack. So, people who opt for the extra board or for those force assigned to the extra board by the carrier need to have minimum earnings guaranteed lest they receive little or no compensation for laying in much longer. So here, guaranteed earnings provide incentive for people to opt for an extra board assignment and are compensated even though not working. Think of it as a salary. Another instance for getting paid for watching TV is when the extra board is depleted. If a train or yard engine must run, then someone holding a regular assignment such as pool freight may be used off of his regular assignment to fill the vacancy. But, pool freight assignments pay way more than a single shift on a yard engine, so, if used off your regular run to fill a yard engine and it keeps you from being rested pursuant to the Hours of Service Act to come out on your regular turn, then you are paid the earnings that you would have made if working your regular assignment. Here, you sit at home waiting for your space to return to the home terminal while being compensated the same as if you were working. So, if used off due to no fault of your own you are entitled to be paid for missed earnings. I am proud to say that I have been a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLE), now the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) for all my working life since entering Engine Service in 1973. The BLE is the first and therefore the oldest organized labor union in the US, having been chartered in 1863. I am curious to know whether this payment for non-service would be held in as much contempt for these “freebies” such as those relating to the UAW? At the very worst, labor unions are at least a necessary evil, in my book. As far as strikes are concerned with regard to rail labor, they almost never happen, even though a legal strike may be sanctioned pursuant to notice of intent through service of a “Section 6” before picket lines ever go up, citing national security as well as national economic concerns, allowing for a rubber stamped federal “Back to Work” order issued by a Federal Judge. Ironically, when it comes time for negotiations with regard to wages and work rules (not the same as operating rules in the GCOR) we rails are considered “unskilled labor,” and as such are considered overpaid. Your thoughts, please?Addendum: Yeah, I've known many who worked well past retirement age, but it is not usually a matter of economics that drives them. I've known a couple who thought that they waited a long time to be #1 and ain't gonna give it up until death takes them or being bad ordered. I couldn't wait to get out of the clutches of the UP. For a long time I though I left the farm for railroading too soon, but, when I pulled the pin in 2000, I had 28 years in giving me a full pension, yet I was only 47 years old. These older birds have a different work ethic. I learned from those who ran steam and most of them were products of the Great Depression, so for them, work and cash was coveted. Conductors would tie up at 15:59 on duty so they could come out on their regular turn the next morning. I'm afraid my words may have been misunderstood. I am a staunch union supporter. I meant that the worst a "detractor" of unions could say with any credibility is that they are a "necessary evil."Great answers/dialogue thus far. I am hoping more non-union workers will voice their opinions. I'm just looking to take the pulse of of the evreyday joe on where they stand with regard to unionized labor. more

Your friend is on life support, and her 84 year old mother, her only living family member, tells them to pull the plug. She left all 3 of her kids, plus the twins, to you in the will. So, with no idea what she wanted to name them, name the girl after her in some way, and pick the middle name, and you pick her favorite flower. Resolved Question: Las Vegas dining: solo female, foodie/cuisine slut, need ciggie breaks, prix fixe?, patio/view?

I'm going to Vegas for a much-needed solo vacation. Not much of a gambler, going for food, spas, food, and perhaps a little something that stays in Vegas. Plus food. I can cook a good steak for myself, so spare me steakhouses unless they do grouse and quail. Love French, seafood, asian, Indian. Italian only if it's really special -- what's Mario up to? Lunch or dinner. Haute cuisine, star chefs, bring them on if the price justifies the taste. Serious foodies, I'm talking to you, as well as women who have had good service when traveling solo. Best recent experience was Thomas Keller's Bouchon, if that gives an idea. I don't want anyone having a fit if I slip to the casino between courses for a smoke. I don't mind a prix fixe bargain as long as it reflects the excellence of the food and not some slop they serve the cheapies. Don't mind eating in the bar if it would further conviviality. Small plates -- I love them. Also would appreciate a word for anyplace open after 10 pm.the stars in the title censored my word ess ell you tee. C'mon, Yahoo, I'm talkin' about food! more
