When I was 19 I got my first credit card with credit for a whole $300. I was contacted by Ramada Plaza resorts and folded like a cheap chair for a "free" vacation. I almost included 3 of my best friends. After the fact, I checked it out and although it was legitimate, it was not free. Meals, airfare to Florida, taxes turned out to be $2000+ per person. Luckily they had only charged my card for the $300 but were demanding the balance. I fought it and won. I contacted 'Phone Busters' who advised me it was legitimate but what it really cost, and that I could probably book a vacation of my choice for much, much less. The ones I love are the companies who advertise diet supplements, make-up, etc. for a free one-month trial...all you pay is the shipping. Then the next month your credit card is billed for $79.95 and good luck getting a human on the line to cancel! How about you? (and I just about bought the Slap Chop...good thing I researched that one first!) more

Resolved Question: Where and when should my boyfriend and I go on our first vacation together?

I've been with my boyfriend for almost 4 years now, and we want to finally go on a vacation somewhere. I'll be 20 in October, he'll be 21 in December. I can't decide if we should go somewhere over the summer (probably late July early August) or if we should wait until winter break (mid December to mid January) to go somewhere. Also, I can't decide where to go! I think he really wants to go to like a national park or something historic, and I'm fine with pretty much anything. I DO think a beach vacation would be easier and cheaper, but I'm not sure how fond he would be of that. Although, with the right destination, for the right price, he can probably be convinced! I've been to Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas, Missouri, Iowa, and Florida, (he's been to all, plus Nebraska) and we'd really like to visit a place we've never been to. We'd like it to be relatively cost effective, too. No more than 700 a person (flight and hotel) in the summer, and no more than 800 a person (flight and hotel) in the winter. Cheaper than that would obvisouly be GREAT!!! We have also entertained the idea of DRIVING somewhere, but we only have like 4 or 5 days to vacation, so that probably wouldn't be wise. Keep in mind... CHEAP. My boyfriend I are looking to spend a few days in Florida for our Spring Break this year. I don't want to go anywhere super expensive, as we are both limited on money (we probably have 1k each to spend TOPS. Absolutely no more than that!) I don't want to go to a city where I have to pay a lot of money to have fun. For example, theme parks? No thanks. My boyfriend doesn't ride rollercoasters anyways (I know, total killjoy). SO! Voting Question: Was I too cheap? Or was I stupid?

My ex had asked me to buy our tickets to Florida for a vacation and he would pay me back the money next week. I said no because if he's going to pay me back the money next week, what would be the point of buying the tickets (and make reservations for the room)? His sister and brother in law kept pushing me to buy the tickets because it was a good deal, but I knew that it wasn't. Then he dumped me because he said that I would never help him if he needs it. So then I bought him a laptop and his mother kept telling him to give the money back as it was too expensive and at first I didn't want the money but they kept insisting and it seemed like they were embarrassed so I took the money back (only half). The day before he went to some crap medical school in Antigua, his mother told me to leave him alone (in a joking way so I wasn't sure if she was serious). Then he said that maybe I should and I didn't say anything but became cold to him because it's kind of disgusting that he would be with me when he was poor and then when he got into a medical school (a money making one that accepts everyone) he wanted to dump me. I would have let him go if we had not been serious and were together for 2 years already. Him and his mother mentioned marriage multiple times. When I was cold, I expected him to end things, but he didn't and I didn't want him to either. Then the next day he asked me to drive him around town to help him do errands and when I was driving, he kept staring at the college girls walking around. So I became furious and said that he's looking forward to sleep with them when he left. He told me to leave his things at his house and leave him alone. I left his things in the parking lot (for 5 minutes and then went back for it) and he saw it and got furious and I tried to tell him that I was sorry and to talk to me. He ignored me and told me that he would call the cops on me if I didn't leave him alone. His sister and his mother wrote a nasty e-mail to me telling me that I'm a bad person for taking the money back (half) for the laptop and for leaving his things in the parking lot. He dropped out of that school in Antigua and we got back together. He was nice and he stopped staring at women all the time and stopped talking about how the coworkers wanted to sleep with him so I was a happy clam. I moved to go to another school and we still stayed together, he applied to a school in Poland that pretty much accepts everyone and didn't tell me about it. He never wanted to visit me until he needed to go to the Polish embassy and I just thought it was Antigua all over again so I dumped him but wanted to stay friends because I did love him. He ignored me. I don't know how he paid for Antigua as he had no savings and his parents are very poor. I'm assuming his sister helped him pay for it as he told me that they sued the company they worked for. Looking back, this was a very bad relationship to be in but sometimes I wonder am I simply too cheap for love? Should I have been more generous? I did buy him food every time I went to see him and bought him gifts that cost more than the gifts he bought for me but I didn't care about that because I bought them by my own volition. I just don't know if it was a bad thing for me to do to not buy him those plane tickets to Florida because he took it as a sign of me not helping him when he needed it. I don't want to make the same mistake when I meet a decent guy but I wonder if what I did was actually a mistake or if he was the bad person for expecting money from me. more

Me and my friend are planning a 10 day trip to Florida for this summer. We want to do the whole Disney/Universal thing. Anyway I have a few questions that I would rather have answered by real people, and not internet sites. 1) My friend and I are 20 and 19 years old, and I know legal drinking age is 21, but what is legal age to book a hotel room? We probably want to stay like 6 days on Disney property and the remaining 3 night somewhere in Orlando near Universal since we cant rent a car. 2) What are the cheapest times to fly to Orlando, and when do you reccommend to go? 3) Please if you have any other good travel tips, or ways to save money I would love to know. Resolved Question: Are these good gifts for my daughters birthday?

My daughters birthday is February 14th. She is very excited. She is turning 11. We are celebrating our birthday in a different state. We live in Florida, we are celebrating in in San Diego. We are going Thursday Feb. 11, (She said this vacation should be over because her Valentines Party at school was that next day, but there might be snow or something on the 12th, so it is on the 10th, the day before we leave and now she regrets it :) ) And we leave Tuesday, February 16th. She will miss 3 days of school, maybe 1 or 2 also, because of snow. We first of all need activities to do in San Diego. We plan driving down to L.A on that Friday night to spend Saturday there and go back to San Diego on Saturday night. We want to go to the beach, but is it cold? We need cheap activities. Any suggestions. We are there for about a week. Here are her gifts: Her Dad and I are divorced, so she gets twice the gifts. From Me and her step dad: Puppy (Reason we are in San Diego) DSI Bike Her Dad and Step mom: Bike Little toys Little games Scooter We also both agreed on getting her a cell phone. She was already through the IPod phase, she is 11 anyways....I saw a few comments stating that the cell phone and puppy are not a good gift for now because of her age. About the cell phone, she will have unlimited texting, and I will be monitoring her texting, pictures, games etc. I will limit her games, her texting etc. She is responsible. I will be doing the monitoring for a few months. It is not like letting her have a Facebook or Twitter where she can be "attacked" on. The Puppy. She has had smaller animals before, the average life- 3 years. She usually added 2 extra years. She has a love for animals soo. We have babysitted animals and dogs and this is a puggle. We think she will be very responsible. Yes, she will be taking the dog with her to both houses. Our custody is week by week. EVERYTHING IS A SURPRISE!!! I think she will be happy with herself. Do not call me a spoiled person, please. When your parents are divorced, you sometimes have more advantages and some people dont. Best person gets 10 points. Good Luck :) more

Resolved Question: Why is it that NYC and the surrounding area lack franchised and fast food restaurants?

I'll go on vacation to Florida or maybe colorado and i see they have all these fast food restaurants and franchise chains but when it comes to new york city and the 5 boroughs they don't have any of them or if they do maybe they will have one. For instance they don't have this buffet restaurant called Golden Corall which im sure are in other place sbesides florida. It's he best place, lots of food good price, a ton of stuff to pick from. Cici's pizza buffet place... a lot of states have them, awesome food. Even restaurants like Chili's, Ruby Tuesdays, Olive Garden etc they are all out in long island far away from where I live in Queens NYC. It took over a year to get quiznos here when everyone else had them. So whats the deal? Even though we have privately owned food businesses it doesnt mean we have a lot of a certain kind of food nor does it mean that place is going to be good either. Mcdonalds, burger king taco bell do well here so why can't the others? Does it have to do with licensing or something? is it difficult to get a license? I made a question like this before and no one really answere dmy question. They all kept saying why would you want fast food, and thats my business sometimes Im in the mood for it and everyone wants a bit of change from the norm, plus sometimes its just quicker and cheaper. I just want to know for a place that has a lot of people why we get jipped out of some pretty good restaurants that are of the fast food and franchised kind.Yeah but we have places like White Castle (awesome by the way), Mcdonalds, Burger King, Subway, Quiznos, Wendy's, Taco bell, KFC, but they have no room or wanting of the other restaurants i mentioned? Heck we don't even have a dairy queen!!! how pathetic is that. But its ok for the rest of america to have it. more

in the summer, i usually get a bit of a tan, then some years i'm lucky enough to go on a vacation to somewhere hot for spring break (my grandparents live in florida). there, i'll be able to tan a tiny bit more. then that lasts me till the summer. this year however, we had the worst summer ever. it was barley ever sunny. so lets just say im lookin pretty pale right now. i will also not be going to florida this year... i'd be ok with this, but its gotten that im SO pale that none of my makeup matches my skin anymore. my face is orange, and my neck is pale! gross... i have bad acne. i can't buy cheap makeup or it makes me break out even more the normal. so since i already have all the makeup i need, just for a more tanned person, i thought it would be less expensive if i just went tanning. . my mom was not down.... at first, she told me that she would pay for the makeup if i didn't go tanning. that was cool, until it was time to pay and she decided that it wasn't a good idea anymore. so now im stuck. i either have to fork over 70$ dollars for makeup (which i don't have...), or 20$ tanning AND THAT ALL. i DONT want to be orange. my plan was to use all my tanning minutes in a span of a few weeks, then completely stop tanning until summer. my mom doesn't like that either.... how can i convince her to let me go tanning? or to pay for my makeup? its not like she can't afford it. she pays quite a bit more on her beauty products for herself... her arguments are: - cancer ( i'd be going for the same amount of time as i would tan if we went to florida, and she has no problem with it there) - funguses (i would obviously go somewhere that is clean and that friends of mine have already gone). - creeps watch you tan (she heard ONE story about that happening in the bad part of our city, and now shes convinced that they are everywhere). help? and sorry this is so long...i like to talk.... :)i do go to a dermatologist. have been since i was 12. i still have pretty bad acne though : im taking an oral acne pill and used to use a night cream on my face, but it irritated it to much so i stopped.i tried tanning lotion and it made me orange :S so there was 15$ out the window... more

After spending a year apart from my boyfriend [I'm in Africa doing volunteer work with orphans], he would like to take me on a week-long vacation when I get back. The only issue is-- we hardly have any money, and we can only take this vacation in July. Resolved Question: Aunt is getting SCREWED in a divorce... What can she do?

My aunt moved in with us about a year ago because her husband found a new hot wife and kicked her out of the house. Her lawyer advised her to go ahead with the divorce and they will settle the money part later, b/c my uncle was in a hurry to get married. So they are divorced now but the money part is still not settled. He makes over $200,000 per year, and they were living on a million dollar property plus they had a lake house. As part of their settlement they agreed for him to keep the lake house, and sell their house and divide the profits. They were never able to sell the house for a profit so he let it get forclosed, so my aunt did not get any money from that. The only money she has ever received is $1200 monthly alimony, which is not enough. And she doesn't even get that anymore because he quit paying it!!! Her only job prior to the divorce was a kindergarten teacher which was 20 years ago. Since the divorce she worked in a daycare and at Target, which both let her go. My family bought a house for her and she pays the mortgage, which is about $800 per month, plus she has a car payment, 2 dogs, and about $300 per month for prescriptions bc she has type 1 diabetes. So the $1200 was not even enough... Now he hasn't paid since November because he's mad at her. If it weren't for my family she would be on welfare. Her lawyer is a piece of crap because it was basically the cheapest one she could afford... She told him about not getting the alimony payments, and he said there is nothing they can do and she will just have to wait for the next court hearing which is in July!! Is this really her only option? Her husband has not been paying alimony because they could not agree on a settlement so my aunt wanted to go to court about it. He told her she would regret it, and then he quit paying. Our fear is that when July comes around, he's going to reschedule the court date for even later or something. Is she going to get the missed alimony payments??? The thing that gets me is her husband, my ex-uncle, bought a new beautiful house, a new boat, and takes their kids on vacations all the time to their lake house and to New York and Florida. Obviously $1200 is NOTHING to him. He knows my aunt is suffering. My aunt is living in a 900 sq ft house and she doesn't even have cable and she's depressed beyond words. She is working part-time as a cashier in Whole Foods. Is her only option really to wait for July?!?!? Will he be penalized for refusing to pay alimony? Will he have to pay the missed alimony?? more

I am considering investing in some realestate in Australia (I am from Florida, U.S.) for some vacation property. I've always dreampt of owning some property over there, and just having a place to go for a nice getaway with the family would be wonderful for me. I am wondering what the normal process would be for buying some vacation property over there. My price range will be relatively cheap compared to most (100,000 - 250,000 at most) so I may end up with a fixer upper, or either a very small cottage in a small Australian town, possibly in Queensland (which is where I've been looking at properties). My question is, beside the paperwork and being ready and able to make the purchase, is buying vacation property in Australia a generally easy process? So, my ex and I decided to go to Florida for vacation. His sister and brother in law told us that we could not get a better deal than the one we had that day (which is not true) and my ex told me that he didn't have money but will give me money back when he gets the next paycheck. I said that we should wait until he gets the paycheck and also shop around a bit more for better plane tickets and hotels and he got mad saying that I will never help him when he needs it. Then he went off to Antigua for medical school and his mother told me to leave him alone because I am a "bad person" after I bought him a laptop (that she kept insisting on giving me half of the money back for). Then he didn't finish the school and came back and his sister ended up paying for his tuition and the only way she got that money was because her husband sued his employee for something. After all this, I am still the bad person because I didn't buy him plane tickets to florida and when I drove him around town to get stuff for school, he was staring at all the women and I got mad. He told me to leave his stuff at his house and then leave. I left his stuff in the parking lot and his sister and mother e-mailed me asking me what kind of person I was to leave his stuff in the parking lot (which I had went back to get). At the end of the day, I'm not sure if I was the bad person or if I was taken for a fool. I know that his mother and sister did not approve of me because I was not Bosnian but they would never admit to it because they didn't want to seem "racist", but I bought my ex gifts and he called them cheap (and he bought all my gifts from walmart or the grocery store). His mother said that if he's going to have a daughter in law, she must speak bosnian. It really seemed like once he went off to medical school (a medical school that accepts everyone because it's a money making business) him and his mother all thought that I was supposed to be tossed aside like a piece of trash. I'm still annoyed even though this happened last year. Should I have been more generous or less stupid? more

So I'm from Canada, and the economy didn't hit us nearly as hard as certain parts of the US. There are many places that are great vacation spots with CHEAP houses(I was looking mainly at Pheonix and places in Florida) that normally would have been like 3 times as much. I wanted to get a group of people(investors) together and split the cost of these houses, and rent them out as either vacation homes or rent them out to people during september-may and then rent as vacation from june-august, and then when the economy turns around, sell the houses for a larger amount than it was paid for. So what im asking is 1. is this even a good idea? 2. does something like this exist already?*Sorry I left a few things out. It's a very rough sketch, kind of just came into my mind. I do have a contact in Pheonix that could hire someone to do the cleaning after each visit, unless of course I was to rent the house out to live in, then the renters would be responsible + a DD. Also, I was just going to get my real estate liscence in the summer, and I guess grab some type of intl. real estate liscence if need be and choose the houses myself(I have enough airmiles to get to Arizona and back a few times). I can also handle all the bookkeeping myself and would just charge a very small commission for those things. *And those tax issues seem like a problem, BUT I believe as a Canadian, even with foreign direct investment in real estate in the US, alot of the tax is reimbursed by the Canadian government. more

Resolved Question: HELP! I've got 2 free plane tickets and want to plan a vacation, tropical and inexpensive, where would you go?

THIS IS A BIT LONG< READ ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE TIME TO HELP ME DECIDE: THANKS! First of all I don't want to sound like I am complaining here, just confused on where to go. I realize I am very lucky to have the tickets! The plane tickets are for anywhere in the U.S. plus Cancun, Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Aruba. Most of these places outside the U.S. would be too expensive though in terms of hotel and food for me right now for two people, so where else in the mainland U.S. could I visit that is somewhat near a nice beach, maybe some shells, and isn't too expensive for a hotel there and food? I only have about an extra 1,000 for a 3 day trip somewhere for the hotel and food and spending. All I want to do is spend some quality time with my husband and sit and watch the waves, drink a tropical drink at a tiki hut, swim in a huge pool and possibly take a boat out to a little island to find some shells. (Otherwise I also have free hotel rooms at any Harrah's hotel in the U.S. so I guess they have Harrah's in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, New Orleans, Phoenix, and other places more inland in the U.S. That would be very cheap then since I would then have free air and hotel, but none of those places is really that tropical!) I could also choose to fly to New Orleans or Miami and try a 4 day cruise. Upside of that: fairly cheap and could see Key West AND Mexico ! And lots of food all included in the price Downside: I've never been on a cruise , sometimes there are hidden costs to consider, tipping, extra excursion, etc. and I wouldn't get into the pool with tons of people, no privacy, and could seem like I'm stuck on a boat with a bunch of drunks since I heard the 4 days cruises are "party cruises". Again see I'm totally stuck on what to do and where to go with these tickets! Anyway if I don't do the Harrah's free hotel thing or the cruise then, I was thinking possibly Pensacola, Florida since it is supposed to be cheaper and they still offer the touristy things to do there, but not sure if that might be too boring. Do you have other ideas that could work? I wouldn't mind using the free tickets to California but then the hotel prices are just too high. And Virginia Beach is supposed to be nice but I'm not sure if it is expensive to visit and I know it won't be as tropical as Florida or Cancun of course since there will doubtfully be tiki huts and tropical drinks/ not sure though? Also lots and lots of people say go to Cancun but I worry about a few things: crime to and from the hotels, crime at the hotels, crime going to dinner in the cities and I'd hate to see children begging on the beach on my vacation or stray dogs starving to death running down the beaches. If you've gone there, is that what you've encountered ever? Some previous yahoo people said that was what it was like, not fun for a vacation then. Someone recommended a place calledCancun Palace (p.s. my research shows: Le Blanc in Cancun looks amazing if you have more money than me for the trip!), someone else said Myrtle Beach, others Key West? Has anyone been to Key West lately, do you have any quiet beaches or are they all packed with crazy tourists? If I can't come up with a trip that my husband would also like, then he said I should just use one of the tickets to fly to my niece's wedding in Minneapolis and wait for the other ticket for something else ....BORING use of the 2 tickets I say, and then I might never go on the somewhat more "romantic" and "relaxing" trip with my husband. I think I'd rather just pay for the wedding ticket for myself separately.Sooooo ...... if you could go anywhere, where would you fly for a fairly inexpensive vacation with my 2 free tickets? I'm totally stumped on what to do and where to go! The flights would be to and from Denver but the times aren't important, just so long as they're cheap. My parents have decided that instead of christmas gifts we are going to go on a vacation in January. we have only been to Florida, so we don't have much experience researching vacation destinations. A Cruise is out of the question for my father. There is just the 3 of us, and I am over 21. We are thinking, Bahamas... or maybe Barbados, St. Lucia... but are open to other suggestions.
