Open Question: Looking for a Florida vacation that "feels" like Hawaii?

My husband and I used to live in CA and enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii. Now that we live in TX and have a toddler, we're fairly sure we can't do the 8.5 hour flight that it would take to get us there. We'd like to take a "tropical" vacation without leaving the mainland...is there somewhere in Florida that has super white sand beaches...warm water, etc. and is really kid friendly like the island of Oahu? I don't know anything about the state and have heard varying things about Miami, Destin, the Keys, etc. Would love to hear from you if you've taken a beach vacation to Florida and thought it was just awesome! (Or, maybe there's another state that offers what we're looking for? Myrtle Beach, etc?) Thanks! more

My family is planning on going down to Florida for vacation sometime soon. I was just wondering what areas/cities are most common and know for sharks being around and what areas have the least amount of sharks. and i've heard they are mostly in the gulf..so if u're on the eastern coast of florida..is there a much lesser amount? Resolved Question: Snorkeling question . . . from someone who's snorkeling experience is limited to Typhoon Lagoon (Disney World)?

We are going to Destin in June. I'm looking at those boats that take you out to go snorkeling. Is it really necessary to be taken out to snorkel? Can't I just go in the ocean with a face mask and snorkel and foot fins and look down in the water? Do they know certain areas where there are more fish that you cannot get to from land? We are leaving from LA to Destin, FL in Tuesday (3 days). This is a regular vacation destination throughout my life. I always heard, not sure how true, but always seemed to be happen with the amount of beer we would drink, that FL domestic beer has less alcohol than normal. I have a full car so where is the last place I can by domestic beer with normal % of alcohol by volume to buy and bring it the rest of of the way instead of the entire way.
