Europe Travel Vacation Questions asked

Open Question: what should I do with my life!?

Ok, well hi, first off, I'm only 15 years old. I LOVE LEARNING STUFF IN SCHOOL! Im good at most subjects, and I'm really into art and photography. Im learning how to paint and sketch and stuff like that, and im good at it! I live in louisiana and im miserable here. I don't want to go on vacation for a week I just want to travel the entire world! And take pictures and paint pictures of it. My heart has always been in Europe. I want to go to Italy, France, London, Paris, and Ireland.. I love my friends - family, but not the united states. Im also absolutely fascinated by History. Like greek mythology and ancient rome. I LOVE history and art. Im making a dream journal, i know it sounds silly but what can I say? I really really really HAVE to go to these places. I love them all. What should I major in, in College???!! Im going to need some money! I've been saving up since I was like...10 though, so I have a couple hundred. I don't have a job yet, but as soon as Im 16 i'm getting one. I know what I want to do with my life, and I wont take no for an answer. I want to travel and be free! and im also kinda addicted to my Xbox 360.. :) SO, what should i do for college?! (im a sophomore this year) but I like to plan ahead. :) more

Open Question: Can two people check in 4 luggage when flying internationally?

My dad and I are flying back to Europe from the states. We originally only had one checked-in luggage each but after the vacation and all the shopping they are over weight, so instead of paying the weight fees I was wondering if we could just get two more suitcases to check in too. I found this: Most flights originating from the US have a 'two piece' limit for luggage - you can check two bags, and you pay extra per bag. This applies whether the flight is domestic within the US or international. But does that mean two checked bags for each person or for each group of people traveling together? I know this might be a stupid question but I just really do not want to pay any extra money. Thanks! P.S. im sorry if my english is not perfect. more

Voting Question: Do Canadians vacation often outside of Canada?

Or not, because it's too expensive. I know that a low percentage of Americans have passports, is it the same with Canadians because of the geographical distance from other countries? How many Canadian young people travel frequently to Europe, for example? Or do they usually just vacation in Canada? more

Resolved Question: Is Michelle Obama really paying for the flight to Spain, all $147,000 worth or are you?

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20012789-503544.html Do you think we will see the receipt CBS News is reporting that the White House is IMPLYING that BO's are paying for her trip to Spain. I guess they are paying for 30 to 60 rooms a night to at a hotel that charges up to $2,500 a night for rooms. http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions/2010/08/04/2010-08-04_material_girl_michelle_obama_is_a_modernday_marie_antoinette_on_a_glitzy_spanish.html Or are we the American tax payer paying and getting hosed but once again by BO and his bobus but wife. And Obamanites please spare me the crap about Pres Bush's vacation, where did he go all the time wasn't it some ranch he owned in Texas or comments about conservatives never complaining about Laura Bush's travel. I frankly do not recall her trips to Europe with her family friends in Air Forces Two. more

Resolved Question: am in default with payments since I left the country, now that I am coming back, will I be arrested?

I am a Canadian citizen. I left Canada 5 years ago to go back to Europe, where I am also a citizen. I left behind an unpaid student loan and a few unpaid utility bills. I owe about 7 grand in total as far as I know....and I know that they are being collected by collection agencies. I am visiting Canada for vacation soon and I want to know whether it is risky for me to enter the country. The question, I guess, is will they stop me right at the border, can they check me for such things? Can they arrest me? One of the reasons I am travelling back to Vancouver is to settle this situation and pay off these debts, now that I no longer have money problems. more

Resolved Question: My friends and I would like to visit Scandinavia next summer - which country should we choose?

We're all rather fascinated by Northern Europe and we'd like to explore it during next year's summer vacation. Since we're on a student budget, we can't afford much so we'll have to limit our travels to one Scandinavian country. We know that Scandinavia isn't exactly the cheapest part of the world but we're willing to live off crackers and water if need be and we most certainly don't need to stay in a hotel, we'll hostel our way around. ;D Now, which Scandinavian country would be most interesting/cheapest? We're all interested in history and archaeology and we're not that outgoing so towns with a wild nightlife aren't a must. more

Resolved Question: Boyfriend doesn't like traveling with me....or am I crazy?

We've been together for about 6 years. After 4 years, I got into a car accident and am now a paraplegic. I have all these new-found insecurities that make me feel like a burden on him and anyone else. A lot of my friends travel and I always hear of their adventures abroad. I can't help but cry on the inside that I can't just fly away on a whim and backpack through Europe without intricate planning and the use of a wheelchair and other medical equipment. I've approached my boyfriend about traveling, but he says he's not really the traveling type and likes to stay home. I sometimes think that maybe it's because I'm such a hassle to travel with. He says it's not because of me. The first trip we went on together after being injured was on a 7 day cruise to the Bahamas with a few friends. That trip alone, took me a few years of nagging before he finally agreed to go. He went to Vegas with the guys a few months ago and he had no problems deciding to go. It was just so easy for him to decide. Whenever I ask, he says, he has to check for vacation days, see if he has the funds etc...(which is sad cause in Vegas he spent 2 grand..which is way more than when we went on our cruise.) Just recently, he told me his family is going back home to visit for a month (Spain). He'll go with his family on a trip, but has never had the same willingness to go for a short vacation with me. Plus, his family gets him so angry, when we fight, it looks like child's play. I don't know what to think, am I just frustrated over nothing? I feel that I'm making him do chores by asking and pleading with him to travel with me. It makes me sad thinking that one day in the future, he'll just become more reluctant. What do I do? I feel guilty that I imagine being with someone else that wants to explore the world with me. more

Resolved Question: Europe Travel help.... Paris, Spain, Portugal specifically?

I am going on a trip to spain in august for vacation. I am also planning to go to another country since they are pretty small or you can travel easily to. I am thinking Portugal or France. I don't know which one. With my Prior knowledge i find France more interesting. If i decide to go to France i will go to Paris or Monaco/Nice Cote d azur. Im thirteen years old so i don't know much about traveling (il be with my parent of course). So i want to know what city doesn't have to many things for adults that i cant go to. I also need help finding out what transportation to take. I was comparing bus, train, and plane prices and i figured out the plane and train were the most expensive. Im not positive about this though, so my question for this part is....What is the best way to travel to Paris from Spain, Possibly MAdrid or Barcelona. more

Resolved Question: family vacation annoyances?

ok so i'm sure there are many people out there who feel the same way, at least other 17 yr old girls. ( or guys, w/e :P) so every year we take a family vacation either to brasil ( my mom's from there) or europe ( my dad is french) or something nice like that, it's always fun, for the most part ( my dad is a giant pain in the ass ) and yeah we come back with great memories and photos blabla.. the thing that bothers me( for lack of a better word) is the fact that i'm the kindof person who really enjoys living life and just meeting people, socialising, having a good time taking in the city, night life and all that. but with family, especially when you're 17 and naive you really can't get away from family. it's like you see a bunch of young people that you want to mingle with but you can't exactly ditch mom and dad to go hang out with people your age... i have a 20 year old sister but we're pretty different, i'm more outgoing and like that.. just wanted to vent my frustration is all!! anyone with similar feelings, please share!! oh and one more thing, do you guys think it's too young at 18 to start traveling alone or with friends or something like, non family vacation style?? i know 18 you're an adult, but i'm really close with my mom and i'm not the type to just up and leave like that just to be "independent" or whatever, i just really wanna travel and be able to escape the family touring and all that! thanks fro anyone who replies! sorry it's sortof long :Pyea yeah exactttllyy. like i see all these young people and it's likee ugh im stuck taking photos with the fam!! i mean i love it at the same time, it's fun and alll.. but like it's hard to not want to go mingle wit the youngsters!! i mean i dont want to sound obnoxious or like snobby but i'm an attractive girl and like guys check me out and like blow me kisses it's sortof awk with the familly right there like it becomes laughable because like i said we're pretty close but still it'd be nice to act on the flirting instead of just passing by motionless!! more

Resolved Question: Why do Americans think they can compete with the rest of the world academically in this condition?

Okay I know I sound kind of rude saying this but think about it. In Germany and other countries if you want to play sports you play for private leagues in high school, in European schools, you go to school for one reason, that is to study and study and study and LEARN. Apparently this isn't the case in the US, schools spend MILLIONS on football stadiums and basketball courts, athletes are worshiped and those who want to actually do something with their life and get good grades are called nerds, geeks and everything. In my travels to Europe, I observed that students that made good grades were well respected by their classmates, not the case in the US. If you wanted to play sports, you played outside of school while in the US, well schools just make sure that athletes get everything they can to play. Teachers will pass a failing athlete just so he can play in the next basketball game. In that condition, just why do Americans think they can compete with the rest of the world academically? Eliminating summer vacation and putting more hours in school won't help the situation. more

Voting Question: How not to seem like I'm bragging about vacations and trips?

I love to travel and it's always been my dream to travel the world. I'm one of those people who would literally go anywhere that didn't have a warning from the U.S. State Department. Well, I haven't been able to travel overseas until last year, on a trip to the UK and France w/ my husband. This year, we're going to Italy. We want to go now before we have kids. None of our family or friends has ever been anywhere outside the U.S. besides Canada or Mexico, so it probably seems a little unusual or extravagent that we went to Europe last year and are going again this year. I'm very excited about our trip, but every time I talk about it I feel like I'm bragging, or I'm worried that it sounds like I'm bragging. Any tips on how not to sound like I'm trying to show off? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: What is the BEST Mom and Pop Pub in Dublin?

My wife and I, along with my 6 month old baby boy (he'll be over a year old by the time of our trip) are visiting Dublin before we head to London on a mini tour of Europe. I want to cram as much into our stay as possible, but I want quality more than quantity. I'm searching for pubs and see that most are large scale tourist traps. I'm all for people making a buck on toruists, I'm in the vacation rental business in NYC, but I want a serious experiance. I want a pub locals go to. I want local food and local flavor. Any suggestions? I want NO fellow tourists or very few. Also, if you guys have anymore tips, or want a REAL New york Experiance in one of my apartments, hit me up on TROMPOS@aol.com I rent vacation apartments in real New york neighborhoods with local mom and pops all around. Resolved Question: Which language to take: Spanish or German?

I took two years of Spanish in middle school (three actually, if you count one in elementary school in a different district) that counts as one year of high school Spanish. So I'm set to go into Spanish II for this coming year, my freshman year. Except I don't really know what to do. My school offers Spanish, German, French, and Mandarin Chinese. I'm not interested in Mandarin at all and while I love the way French sounds and would love to be able to understand it, I just don't have the drive to learn it. I'm currently self-teaching Russian to myself at home, so I'm not so sure it's such a great idea to double-up on languages and take Spanish II, German I, and the equivalent of Russian I (if that even exists somewhere) at HOME. So, I'm trying to figure out my priorities language-wise. I'm keeping the Russian; I've wanted to learn it all my life and I'm on a roll now so I'm not going to drop that. So it's between Spanish and Russian. Yeah, I've used up two years on it, for the equivalent of Spanish I. But this would also be a good point to quit if I were going to do so. Yeah, Spanish is "spoken in more countries than German" but unless I'm getting a low-paying job here in the U.S. or attempting to read the signs in stores these days, I don't really, like, NEED it. I'm a 3rd-gen German immigrant (aka my great-grandparents immigrated here) but they came right before WWII, and so obviously it wasn't the best idea to be touting your German-ness about then and it died out; none of my living family members know German. (My grandma knew it, but she died long before I was born, of cancer.) But if you want to be a professor, or go into medicine, or anything like that, German is the language of choice, as well as if I travel to/work in/live in Europe, anywhere. I'd take both if I could - my ultimate goal is to be a polyglot - but I'm trying to prioritize. In THIS MOMENT, what's best? And I don't mind "starting over" with German - I actually took a trimester's-worth in middle school, and would have taken that instead of Spanish from the start, but they stopped offering it - since I only had the year's-worth of Spanish. Ultimately, I'm not interested in vacationing in Mexico or traveling to Central or South America, and if so it'd be short and I could probably get by well enough on what I know now and some crude sign language, if necessary. On the other hand, I expect to be traveling to Europe at LEAST a few times in my adult life, if not moving there. So, I'm thinking German, but wanted to hear opinions...? And don't try playing the minority card or the "German is only spoken in Germany and Austria" thing. And actually, Austrians have their own differentiation of German..between Spanish and German* more

Resolved Question: how much money should I take for 2 week vacation in Europe?

Resolved Question: Why do conservatives want to punish Polanski even more than he's already been tortured?

The man has not been allowed to return to Los Angeles to make movies, he has to limit himself to making movies in France instead. He cannot come to America and visit his friends, they have to fly thousands of miles to visit him. He can only own property in France, not England (because of extradition) or America. His right of travel has been effectively taken from him. If he were to go on vacation in say Thailand or the Philippines he would face extradition to America. The man has suffered enough already ---he is forced to live in Paris and not Los Angeles which is the film-making capital of the world; his friends are thousands of miles away and have to undergo costly and lengthy flights just to see him; if his children decide to study film at USC, UCLA or NYU, he can't visit them there; he will never see Hollywood or Venice Beach or give a lecture at UCLA ever again in his lifetime. He can only own property in Europe. The man has had his right to Los Angeles taken away from him by a mob of philistines, the same hypocrites who wouldn't dare arrest Mel Gibson despite the hateful things he has said against Jews, Blacks and women. The life that Roman Polanski has had to lead for the past 33 years is a tragedy, it has been a life of deprivation and persecution, the man could not come to Los Angeles to get his oscar, he can't use LA or New York as a locale for his films, he can't live next door to friends like Jack Nicholson or Harrison Ford, so why do you narrow minded people want to torture him even more? more

Resolved Question: Rome VS. Florence Study Abroad - 10 pts?

I have been clogging the Italy forum for weeks now and for that, I sincerely apologize. I am very torn between studying abroad in Rome and Florence, Italy. I have two huge concerns: 1) Cost - both programs are approximately $15,000 ... i have about $6,000 in financial aid. Banks allow you to take out an educational loan for the amount up to the total cost of the program. So my thought process is 15k - 6k= 9k (so the program will really only be costing me 9k because of financial aid) but, i can continue to borrow 15k so I have 5/6k for living expenses, meals etc. - I need to know which city is more expensive in terms of living expenses! Since this is not a vacation (I will be living there for approximately 5 months) I don't think I will feel the need to splurge on one huge night out because I will have opportunities to go out all of the time. But I do need to know which city has more expensive food, night life, attractions, etc. 2) Travel opportunities - This means so much to me I would almost set this above cost. I was thinking of purchasing the Eurail Global Pass (the 3 month one) and traveling throughout Europe on the weekends. Now, most destinations I would want to reach (Ireland, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona) are about a day's worth of travel away from Rome and Florence. So I was wondering if I could get any opinions on the Eurail pass vs. cheap airlines like Ryan Air and Easyjet Overall ... which city will allow me to have a better experience based on these two factors? ps- is the 3 month eurail pass worth if for me living there for 4/5 months (i will probably only be able to travel on weekends) more

Resolved Question: What's the name of this film?

Hi guys, Im wondering if someone has any idea what the name of this film is, it is about an american family there slightly dysfunctional , they travel to Europe on there vacation were they go to Paris and Germany were they plan to meet there long lost relatives but end up at some old random german couples home without them knowing that it ain't actually there relatives. Its a very comical film , from what i can remember the daughter is slightly overweight and she is always talking about how much she misses her boyfriend Jack back in America, the Dad is a bit of a dorky guy who seems to play the central character. So if any one has an idea of what the name of the movie is please tell Thanks guys more

Resolved Question: Are the Women Topless on European Beaches?

We are considering a vacation to Europe, if we can get some bargains. I am not quite sure where, it will depend on the prices. I have been told by friends that the women all go topless on the beaches. I have also been told that there is a lot of nudity on the beaches, that people change into their swimming clothes right on the beach, and that there is sometimes sex on the beaches. I looked at some travel books, and found words like “surprising to Americans” and “a different dress code”, but no real info. I have two teenage daughters and a teenage son. My family is kind of relaxed about clothes. My daughters take showers when my son is in the bathroom, and visa-versa. We change clothes together in hotel rooms. My son has seen me and my daughters naked many times, and my daughters have seen my son and husband naked many times. So I don’t think seeing a topless woman on the beach is a problem. I am concerned about nudity. It’s one thing in the family, but different with strangers. Also, if all the women are topless, are my daughters going to feel pressure to expose their breasts. Does anyone have any real experience so they can tell me what European beaches are really like. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Is it cheaper for Europeans to travel than it is for Americans?

I have friends in the United Kingdom and France, and they're ALWAYS traveling! They're not rich either. I think they would be in the lower-middle class ranking. My friends in England just came back from a Spanish resort in Spain, and they're planning on going to Turkey and even Greece within the next 2 months! My friends in France just went to Australia for a WHOLE MONTH. They also fly to places in Asia in the summertime for vacation and everything. So, are flying prices in Europe a lot cheaper than they are in America? I remember one of my English friends saying that you can get round-trip tickets to Italy for under £50! Does it have to do with the Euro and Pound currency since they're worth more? Do airlines and resorts offer lower prices to Europeans for some reason? It's so expensive to travel here in America, especially on a plane. My family hasn't been on vacation in years even though we're upper-middle class!Donald Duck - Do you know WHY it's cheap? Also, why would it cost 10 Euro to go from London to Rome when the United Kingdom uses the Pound for currency and not the Euro? o.O Why are you from? more

Resolved Question: Europe vacation: Would you rather fly into Brussels and stay there for 2 days or Frankfurt for 2 day?

My wife and I will be traveling to Europe from the US at the end of September. I have two options: fly into Brussels or Frankfurt. I have 2 nights to spend in one of these cities before traveling on to Paris. My original plan was to spend a day in Brussels and then make a day trip to Bruges but I have the option to save some money if I fly into Frankfurt and I will be able to stay at a very nice hotel for little money due to some connections of mine. But I am wondering if Frankfurt has as much to offer as Brussels and Bruges and if it's worth it. If you suggest Frankfurt, tell me why and what we should see there and in the surrounding area for a day trip.I also have Amsterdam as a 3rd option for 2 nights. more

Resolved Question: Cruise line blues help help help.?

I'm ATTEMPTING to plan a vacation to Europe (Italy, to be exact). I'm terrified of flying, so I intended on taking a cruise. But, I'm having some difficulty finding a cruise with a departure port near where I live. I live in Tennessee, but I'm willing to travel to pretty much any departure port on the east coast, as long as I can get to Italy & back! :D Help? This is also my first time on a cruise, so any additional info/tips would be appreciated. :] more

Voting Question: Do you think I can file a lawsuit?! Any lawyers or law-majors?!?! Help i need answers!!!?

Okay so recently I took at trip to Europe and my travel agency totally effed me over. here's what happened, please be honest and tell me if i can claim my money back or something... We had bought our tickets from our travel agents 6 months in advanced, because they had a policy about purchasing tickets early (my family was opposed to this, but went with it because it was mandatory), they told us then to print out the tickets, so we did. Six months later on the day of the flight, which was at 11:15am, we left the house at around 8:13am. when we got to the airport parking garage it was 8:55am, then when we finally got our luggage and arrived inside the airport it was around 9:19am ( i know this because i wrote it down in my travel journal). When we were about to check-in the personal kiosk, the machine denied our ticket. We were all baffled and asked an airline agent to help up (we were flying on Delta). Surely later they found the problem, the machine was not checking us in because our flight was leaving in an hour (10:15am). this change had been made precisely one-month ago. Our agency had NOT informed us. The people at Delta tried to find another flight, but could not book us because they didn't have the capabilities to re-reserve the tickets. When they had told us this we all panic and called our travel agency to find that they agent we had booked with was on vacation and refused to accept calls. we then decided to take a rapid drive to our agency nearly 6 miles from the airport. At our expense, the agency made us pay for new tickets (they paid half and we paid half) to Laguardia airport (NY)[ we had a connection flight]. They problem was that we had to get to JFK airport from Laguardia in 1 hours time. This unnecessary detour had cost us $120. After I had gotten home from my vacation (tuesday), i called my travel agency and they said that I should have gotten to the airport 2-hours before time, and they said that Delta was delaying us because the flight was overbooked. Any suggestions on what I should do?!? Any suggested is appreciated. thanks!! (this happened exactly 2 weeks ago) more

Voting Question: Going on vacation, should I change my birth control schedule?

I'm going to be in Europe for a couple weeks, and there's a 6 hr time difference. At home, I take my BC every morning at 10:30am with a multivitamin because it's easy to remember and I like taking both at once right before breakfast. Last time I traveled, I tried to take my BC at 4:30pm so that it continued being every 24 hours but I kept forgetting to take it because it's the middle of the day. If I switch to taking it at 10:30am GMT (6 hrs earlier than usual), how less effective will the pills be and for how long? it'll be halfway through my second week of pills. more

Resolved Question: where should i visit?

Planning to go on vacation during my next winter break from school, looking to backpack a bit through some new places for me. I have a decen size budget of around 4000, including travel. Yes, I'm looking to do the hostel thing, and I'm going with my girlfriend, who has a similar budget. We've been planning to do europe, start in italy, be in rome for the befana, then make our way through france, into spain. We leave from new york and plan to be gone for 21~25 days. But recently, I've been more drawn to visiting somewhere in asia, perhaps, tokyo or seoul, or maybe bangkok or hongkong. After working and going to school nonstop, wed like to take a trip that would be a once in a lifetime experience, or at least something wed get a lot from. Which should we do? Which do u reccommend and why? Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: Is 500 GEL/US$300 average salary in Georgia, East Europe?

I applied to volunteer as an English teacher under the "Teach & Learn With Georgia" programme by the government. The benefits for volunteers are as follows: * Housing/living accommodations (Volunteer teachers will live with families free of charge); * Medical insurance; * Travel expenditures (round trip tickets, work related trips); * Round trip ticket for one vacation per year; * 500 Georgian Lari per month (approximately $300); * Safe environment. They've responded positively to my application, but I'd like to know if its possible to survive in Georgia with US$300 per month without digging into my own savings. When I wrote to them, they told me 500 GEL is average salary in Georgia, and will be quite comfortable with the housing and food (with the host family, but not at school) covered. Is this true? Would really like a more neutral opinion on this. Georgia looks beauuutifullll, and I'm very keen to go there. I'm not looking for a lot of money, just something that can cover basic expenses. Extra money for some fun/shopping is a bonus, but not essential. Appreciate any kind of advice about this or anything about teaching in Georgia! Thank you! Thank you! <3 more

Hi everyone... I'm in the US and traveling to Europe in the winter. It just occurred to me that if my cash & ATM/credit cards get lost/stolen, what do I do? We are planning on taking some cash, 1 ATM card, and a Visa credit card. That feels sufficient, but in case we have a stoke of bad luck, I'm kind of in the dark about our next step. Any help? Resolved Question: Would it be okay to take my young kids to Europe...?

Okay so I am 29 years old and am married with two young children. My son is 4 years old and my daughter is two years old. My husband and I haven't ever been to Europe together (we've both gone on our own or with family). We would like to take a trip to Europe this summer and maybe go to Spain and Portugal or maybe Greece. We're not sure yet, but I really want to know would it be okay to travel to Europe with my kids since they're really young? I went to Greece every other summer when I was young because I'd go visit my grandmother and aunts. And the first time I went I wasn't even a year old. We want a vacation but don't want to do anything that won't be good for the kids. Thanks! more
