Resolved Question: I don't know what to do about my parents and me?

Ok to start I should say that financially we're ok. By no means rich, but definetly not poor. Middle class, maybe the lower tier of upper middle class. So I'm 17, and all along since I when I was younger, I would hear stories of my friends going to different states, or countries, or even just camping out. I have lived in California and Washington, and the only place I have gone on vacation was to Vegas for two or three days with my dad (in retrospect a horrible idea. I got sick and it wasn;t very fun. What idiot dad has a 9 year old choose a vacation destination, and then later act like it was the best thing ever?). Or how their parents would have a really cool skill or interest, like skiing or running, soccer, scuba diving, etc, and my friends/their parents could bond over that. My parents and I have not gone on any vacations together, let alone a camping trip, and my parents don't have any interests....at all. Basically all they care about is the life/day to day crap and our dog. So I've been able to deal with this, but now it's break and pretty much all of my friends are going on some cool vacation....and I'm not. I asked my dad once why we never went ANYWHERE and he said "I've already done that", and then I asked him why we've never been on a roadtrip or camping or anything, and he answered "I went camping once before"....that was for a cubscout trip that we went one of three days for. He never answered the roadtrip. And then I continued to look at my friends. Maybe this is self defending, but I am very intelligent, tons of people come to me for help/school work and for intellectual conversation, but I have a much lower GPA than all of them. And then I looked and their relationship with their parents.....all of their parents had some kind of bonding activity with them, or were a big part of their lives, and then me......I have nothing. Even kids who I know are lower income than me had a better relationship with their parents. Everyone who excels at something or is smarter, seems to have been helped by their parents in some way. And that makes me envious and angry at the same time, because my parents have NEVER tried to do anything of the sort. My mom is slightly better than my dad. She used to drive us to amusment parks and the such. But that wasn't exactly mentally stimulating, and it hasn't helped to sculpt me into anything worth while. My dad does no housework, doesn't drive us, all he does is walk our dog twice a day. He doesn't cook or clean or anything. So here I am now, admittedly in teenage angst, but I think I am justified. My parents have never made it a goal to mentally stimulate or nurture, or physically nurture me. It honestly seems to me as if they thought parenting just meant keeping a kid alive....honestly, they've raised our damn dogs better than me, they often drive it with them because it "likes to go on rides", or "walk it because he's bored", and I can't even fathom how much money they've spend on medical stuff for them....where as for me it's been basic shots and stuff, and one issue where I needed three stitches. So basically here I am, a rather unfullfilled 17 year old with only so much to offer. I have not traveled outside the country, or outside the west coast. My family has never taken a single vacation together, my mom/sister went on one to Italy together, and my dad/I went to vegas. We are far from poor, and I know the issue has not been money, because we've had enough money to buy new appliances, get a yard which goes unused for my dog, medical bills for said dog, etc. And then my parents have really not cared about my grades, or outside school life. Basically I have parents who help me sustain life, but take absolutely no interest in generating bonds or a relationship.Oh yes, also recently I was really depressed about this. My mom wanted to go get something, and I just said no/that she could go. So then she said "it has to be done" (referring to the task), punch me on the left side of my face, and called me a loser/said I had to friends.......and she was yelling a fair amount and then said our dog didn't like to hear yelling. And my dad is pretty volatile too. Once when I asked if I could go on some trip he said he'd never spend that much/it was stupid, then I said he spent that much on my sister's trip and he said an explitive to me. Then my mom said something, he got up as if he was about to hit her (later he said he was just going to get in her face), I defended her my throwing my foot in front of me, he then jumped on top of me and tried to smother me or something. After he said he'd "hit me when she wasn't around". And he has yelled alot too, and hit my sister a few times (pushing and the such, nothing horrible, but nonetheless).Ok, this also seems to be some confusion so I'll clear this up. I wouldn't care if my parents took me to Europe, or took me to some nearby national park, the point is they blatantly refuse to do anything to try to bring us together, because we are pretty damn disfunctional. I submitted a poem before for a scholarship, and my mom accused me of plagerizing it. I of course didn't, and when I got the scholarship she asked what it was for, and she still thought I stole it. My dad has always refused to do anything with us, whether it's going to disneyland when I was young, or whatever, it's nothing new. And when I've asked him to go to a football game or a college game, he's said no. And he likes football/sports. And I've asked them to try all kinds of new things, all have been met with "I;m too busy", or just straight no.... more

Voting Question: Why doesn't Conservatives helps poor people get richer?

I have an idea to help poor people get richer and live better. The best way to about this is to tax wealthier people more so that there is more Government money to redistribute to poor people, making poor people richer. Another idea I had is we would take 8,000 homeless people, allow them to live on an island, build them castles on the island, give these homeless people their own airplanes and airline service and servant pilots, give them free medicine, give them free education, give them free vacations all over the world, give them scuba diving lessons. Give them free Yoga classes. Give them free movies, free ipods, free iPads, free digital cameras....free laptops..... Give them free EVERYTHING! It would be a utopia.... Now the issue is how to pay for all this.....if we tax the rich corporations, we could then redistribute the tax money to this Welfare Island. This would be a tropical island where welfare benefits would fund pretty much everything. the poor people can choose to work if they want to....but they won't necessarily have to...they will receive free distributionsand you could live there and snorkel and scuba dive every day..... Drink rum every night....sing songs....just sit on the beach..... you wouldn't need to leave it because you're getting welfare distributions....and people would work there to serve these people more

So a few friends and I are looking into going on a tropical type vacation near the end of this year. None of us have ever gone anywhere before so we all have ideas of where we should go. Here's a list of what we are looking for: beach, all inclusive package (if possible), activities like scenic hikes, scuba diving, etc...and if possible someplace with a interesting history. My friend and I are 18 and we are going to vacation in Costa Rica for 2 weeks at the end of May and I was just wondering where the best place to stay is (city, hotels, etc.)? We would like to try some surfing, snorkelling, scuba diving, laying on the beach, etc. We would also like to go somewhere that is relatively safe and that has a pretty good nightlife. We both know Spanish pretty well so that is not really an issue for us. Resolved Question: Where is a good place for two teenage girls to vacation in May/June?

My friend and I are both 18 and will be graduating in mid-May. We want to take a vacation for a couple weeks in the end of May but aren't sure yet where to go. We would prefer to go somewhere in Mexico or Central America-- preferably not somewhere within the continental US. We have looked into Cancun and a couple other places so far. We are mostly looking to go somewhere with great beaches and snorkelling or scuba diving opportunities, a very active nightlife, reasonably affordable flights and hotels, beautiful people, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice as to where we should go? p.s. we would really like to go somewhere that is pretty safe because it will just be us two girls and we're both able to speak spanish so that isn't an issue if we go somewhere with limited English. more

my two friends are getting married....they seem very happy..i've been friends with them for 4 and 5 years...they are outgoing..love to go out on the weekends...vacation etc etc. sooo every year we go to cancun....we are all supposed to go again ....i was just telling my friend Jackie how Niall (the couple) was talking about going scuba diving this coming summer in cancun....she said...no more vacations with friends once we get married.....i was so shocked..then she said and no more clubbing either. The thing is HE has no idea that these are her plans. I’m really lost and confused. I’m so uncertain about my life and it’s affecting my relationship with my boyfriend of three years. I feel like here we go again because the same issues that came up with my ex are coming up again now. We are both very different and we want different things; however, we do love and care about each other very much. If it were up to him, he’d stay living in this area; he loves the beach, scuba diving, boating, etc. If it were up to me, I’d move away preferably up north because I can’t stand the humidity and heat. I’m not a beach/water sports type of person. The most I like is to sit under a hammock (if it isn’t too hot) and listen to the ocean. How do I know if my constant need to get away is what I really want? For as long as I could remember, I’ve wanted to get out of here and find another place to live, starting with going away for college. My parents nor I could afford it, but that yearning stayed with me. I try to travel as much as I can, but I can’t always afford it, and when I do go, I just end up wishing that I lived at the place I vacationed at because any place is better than where I am now. I actually did move a few years ago to NC, but decided it wasn’t for me, so I came back. It’s an endless search for the perfect place and I’m starting to wonder if I just look for things to complain about or make me unhappy and I just can’t see the positive in things. Can one place really make you happy, and is it more important than being with the one you love? Is doing most everything together important too? more

My folks have a time share with Interval International, and i am having hard time deciding what vacation spots to look at. Here is my plan, some friends and I want to go to Florida, we're all looking for one place to stay from Dec 31 to Jan 4 and riding on Amtrak. Few things that we are looking for, One friend wants to go to clubs, others including myself want to do like scuba diving, snorkling, skiing and those water parachutes, and definitily beaches, and possible disney world or other major theme parks to look at. Could someone help me out? We don't have a car we are going there by train so metro transportation and shuttle buses will be necessary as well. I don;'t know Florida and how transportation works with them. more

There is a trip coming up at my school to go to Florida the week after we get out of school for summer vacation. When we go there we will go scuba diving, hiking, and science related activities. The trip costs $1,599 plus $99 enrollment fee. That includes the plane ticket to and from Florida, all meals, all admission fees, evening activities, field journals, the hotel room, the guide, transportation and all that kind of stuff. We will be staying there for 5 days and 4 nights. It says on the form that there will be 'quad occupancy'. What does that mean? Do you think this is to expensive? My fiance is away in a hot country visiting his parents, who have a home there, his Biological father (Who's married to and has a daughter with his half-auntie), and his sister whom he only grudgingly gets on with. It's a big awkward family reunion/reconciliation that I'm glad to be away from. I've already made peace with my fiance for saying "yes" to having his flight booked without asking me first. Resolved Question: Free Caribbean Cruise Tickets for Two?

I got a voucher in the mail for two adult tickets for a free cruise on the Royal Caribbean ship in celebration of their newest ship. I'm not sure if it's a scam or not. I had to call a toll-free 1-800 number within 72 hours to reserve my tickets. I called and it sounded wonderful. The cruise is free, a $1300 value plus a 3 night, 4 day stay in Fort Lauderdale. I just have to pay $99 per person for government taxes, which is understandable. I stayed on the phone for an hour as they rattled off all my packages and experiences I'll have. At the end, they asked for my credit card number to reserve my trip. Then they gave me a number ($898) for the full package, which adds on 2 nights and 3 days at Excalibur or the Gold Nugget in Vegas, a hotel in Orlando, and the Hacienda Resort and Spa in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. All of them, not just one... Plus VIP dining, scuba diving, etc. etc. Can this be real? I realize it's not free, but am I really going to get this "vacation of dreams" for just $898? They also said I could bring up to 2 people with me on the cruise, but they would have to pay an additional $130 or something and they would have a package of lesser value. as a "final ho-rah" before i go off to college, my family and i are going on vacation this summer. they told me i could pick anywhere i wanted to go (within reason- must be in inland U.S.). though im not normally a huge fan of the beach/ocean (i'm more of a woodsy-lake kinda person) i thought it would be really fun to do a beach vacation. i've already gone on a ride in the mountains when i went to colorado, so now im looking to do a beach ride. on top of this it would be good because that way my dad & i can go scuba diving. my mom and i also really like nature conservation stuff, so sanibel island first came to mind but i can't find if they have horseback riding and i've already been there. any ideas? thank you!Chincoteague is such a good idea! even if they don't have riding there, it would be so cool to see the ponies. there's a new chincoteague pony at my farm, he's about 12 hh and SO fiesty, he's kind of hilarious to watch more
