Resolved Question: What to do with my dad and vacation?

Here's the basics: my dad is old-school and very cheap. He's from Italy, and goes to his hometown for a month every summer. I have a new job with a lot of vacation time. He wants me to spend it with him the entire time in his boring small town in southern Italy. He's also too cheap for a rental car, thus limiting mobility. I've traveled in Italy and lived in Rome years ago. I'd offend him gravely if I didn't spend any time with him in his town. However, I can't spend two weeks with him there; no more than a week at most. I need to travel, not sit around all day. He doesn't realize this and talks to me like I am a 5 year-old, telling me what to do and what's best for me, even though it's my money and time-off. How do I get through to him? How do I compromise? more

Resolved Question: Never been to Italy. I want to go to Rome, Florence & Venice. I only have 5 days. How should I divide the days?

This will be my first time in Italy. I only have 5 full days to spend. My flight is coming into Rome & flying out of rome. I've heard so much about Rome, Venice & Florence. I was wondering how I should divide my day? Also, how should I go about getting to the places? Train? rent a car? Would you guys recommend a hotel or vacation rental? I know Rick Steve (travel guru) recommends staying in one spot and then just traveling to the other destinations. Should Venice & Florence just be day trips & should we just keep our location in Rome? Any tips would be great. Thank you! more

Even when I access the villa group page at the top it shows I am logged in as me. I am confused about how to communicate with my fans via my group page. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Train or Rental Car? Which would be better for me?

My family is going on a 1-week vacation in Italy this summer. We will go from Florence, to the countryside outside Bologna/Modena, to Venice. I was planning on taking the train so we could enjoy the views, but saw on our B&B's website that we will need to have a rental car with us while in the Bologna/Modena area anyway to get around to different attractions. Should we just rent a car for this one stop (like 2 days) or should we rent a car for the entire trip and drive each leg? How long does it take driving vs. taking a train? Are the views of Italy from the road much worse than those from the train tracks? How about cost comparison? Any and all suggestions welcome -- thanks!! more

Resolved Question: Please help me determine the cost of this! 10pts?

My friends and I are going to Europe for a vacation. We plan to fly to Athens, Greece and then fly to sicily. We'll spend a few days there then we'll fly to Rome and drive to Venice. THEN we'll fly to Paris and then fly to Spain. Afterwards we'll fly to England near the Harry Potter thingy and then fly to Iceland. Then we will finally fly back home to Dallas, Tx. I need help determining the price of the airfare, the cheapest hotel in each place, and the cost of a rental car for each place! Can I take my car on the back of a plane-would that be cheaper? If you could list where we should go and when as well as where we will stay you will ABSOLUTELY get the 10pts. Because we plan on doing this in a two month time period because we don't know how long we should stay at each place. We want to stay longer at Sicily, Italy! Thank you for your help.SRATCH that we'll be going everywhere EXCEPT Iceland. So we would go from England to Dallas, Tx. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: My husband and I are wanting to move to Italy. Is there some way to find rental houses?

I have looked all over the internet but they think you are renting for vacation or buying a second vacation home (we are definitely NOT). I just want to find a site that will give me realistic pricing and availability on houses or apartments for rent in Aviano, Italy or it's surrouding towns. Someone suggested looking through the phone book or for local realities...I do not have an Italian phone book and cannot locate one online. Any help with that as well? more

Resolved Question: Italy: Should I Drive on a Vacation There?

I'm working on a 3 to 4 week trip there. I want to see areas like Venice, Cinque Terre, Rome, the Amalfi Coast, maybe the less visited southeast, and maybe Sicily. I'm a really good driver, & can deal with high stress situations, but I'd be slower & cautious about it all. Is driving there realistic, or are the trains better? Questions I have? - Is it realistic to drive in Italy? What personality traits would I need for success? - Is it true it would be best not to drive into the cities? Then where would I park my rental car? - They say theft is somewhat common. Is that true? Do you have ideas to prevent it or lower the odds of it happening to me? - Can you safely park outside of Venice? - Have you driven in Sicily? I hear that signs don't exist there, & theft is common. Do you agree? - They say don't drive in Naples. So what should I do with my car? - Can you really get around all over by train? Are they on time? If not, how late do they get? THANK YOU. more

Resolved Question: How do people in Italy rent apartments?

I'm in America and am having a terrible time trying to find apartments in Rome (Italy). I have done hundreds of searches under Rome rentals, Rome apartments, Rome apartments for rent, and I keep getting nothing. I've contacted about a hundred different "apartment" companies (say apartment but are really vacation rental companies) and still have found nothing. I want to have a place when I get there, but now I'm starting to think that's not going to happen. I was wondering how do people in Italy find apartments for rent, other than going to an agent ? I've gone to Romarentals, CROFT properties, Mercurius Relocation, etc. Are there any good agents out there? Is there an online site for a newspaper that has ads? (and Craigslist is not a good site, there are so many scammers). And also what would you say is the AVERAGE rental for a one bedroom 40-50sqm apartment in Trastevere? I'm starting to get so many different numbers, I'm starting to think people are just overcharging.I will be staying for 4 months and was really looking in Rome because my school is located in Trastevere. more

I am going to spend my summer vacation in Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey, each about 10 days. I was wondering if renting a car in each of the country is a good idea. Resolved Question: Where is the best place in Europe to invest in a small property for a vacation rental?

I have always dreamed of owning a small property in Italy or Germany -I'm open to other places in Europe, too-and renting it as a vacation rental. I would then have the pleasure of using it myself once or twice a year and do upkeep, etc. I'm not a rich person-but I do know good investments exist. How do you go about doing this? Where are some beautiful, but untapped areas? Where is a good place to start looking? more
