Im planning a trip for 10 days to miami this winter and it would be alot cheaper to rent a house or a vacation rental from a owner then it would be to get a hotel. Ive been looking around craigslist, VRBO.com, and vacationrentals.com and ive found some nice places. the only thing im a little skeptical of is the owner taking the money and run, or something like that. Basically im sending 1000k to somebody ive never seen before ( i have talked over the phone). So my question is, is there some kind of company out there or is there a way to do this transacton more safely. Maybe a company that acts as your agent or something. Any help would be great. Voting Question: Wrongful withholding of a vacation rental $500 deposit?

My husband and I rented a 1920 Cottage on Qualicum Beach from Sept 2-9 from VRBO.COM ID #31990. The requirement was leaving a $500 security deposit and upon our return, if no damage was noted, the cheque would be returned. Being a vacation rental owner myself, I made every effort to ensure her place was left in pristine condition. Never in my wildest dreams did I anticipate that there would be even a question on the condition of the cottage. On September 10, we received an email from the owner of this cottage accusing me of cracking the inside pane of the tiny window in the bedroom. She cashed the $500 cheque and she said she hoped this would cover the repair! I am completely shocked and I know for sure that neither my husband nor I had any knowledge of this crack. I am too short to see it and because opening/closing the very light curtain on a pocket rod didn't provide any sunlight nor view, we left this completely alone. I feel robbed and that she can claim any kind of damage and cash the security cheque! I live in North Vancouver and hate the thought of traveling to Qualicum to file a small claims court claim, but it enrages me that I can be accused of something I know I didn't do. I emailed her back and told her that we had no idea how this could possibly be done by us since we never touched the window pane. Her response is absurd as she told me that I could have cracked the window and not even realize this. I have kept these emails because it is truly mind boggling that I could be cracking a window without be aware of it! If that is the case, since she claims she washed the windows the morning of our arrival, this concept could also apply to her. Very disappointing and frightening that someone can cash the cheque and accuse the guests of damage that was not done by them! Does anyone know if I have any other option rather than going to Qualicum and filing a claim? She shouldn't be allowed to get away with this. Please help if you can. I would think I am not the first person to have this happen. This makes me feel very vulnerable and very reluctant to leave a security deposit in any future vacations I go on. So, a friend rented a house through vrbo.com. She send a check for $2500, and it was a total scam. They took her money (the owner of the house), and vrbo.com says they are not reliable. Resolved Question: Short term Rental agreement for vacation?

My friends and I are planning to rent a vacation cottage in a different town. The owner gave us a short term rental agreement which asks us to pay 33% of the total rental amount as security deposit for reservation and gives us another 15 days after the security deposit payment is made to make the remaining 67% of the total rental amount. So basically, we will be paying the total rental cost before even renting the cottage for 3 days. Is this standard? Can I negotiate this? If so, what can I ask for - like a 50% now and 50% after arrival? We don't even know the condition of the cottage - all we have is pictures (which are not 100% reliable). I have seen this a lot! You go onto VRBO.com and you look for a great place to vacation for the week. Everything looks perfect EXCEPT the second and third bedrooms do not have televisions. Ughhh! I am in the process of purchasing a vacation home to rent out on a short term basis. I'm trying to find a marketing or advertising specialist that can market it for me (an oceanfront condo in Florida). I'd like that person to design ads for online rental sites like VRBO, Craigslist, physical magazines, etc. I'll have a property manager to answer inquiries and collect rents, etc., but they don't advertise. So...I'm asking because I don't know who to contact for this service. Would it be a marketing or advertising firm? I'm thinking of renting a vacation home in Kissimmee, FL. It requires a $300 deposit and full payment 60 days before arrival. Is this standard policy? I don't know what this technique is called though because when I google "ceiling canopy" I either get chandelier lights or bed canopies as a result. My wife and I wanted to take our family to the Ocean. This is something we have never done as a family. My wife found this site that lists beach rental properties by owner... http://www.vrbo.com/ Using this site, we found a nice rental property and contacted the owner thought the site. The deal is, we are to sign a lease he is emailing us, send the week rental + a $300 security deposit by mail and he will meet us at the property the night we are scheduled to arrive. Now, I am a pretty trusting soul. But my spidey sense says.. HEY DUMMY! Are you really going to send a check for over $1000 to a person you have never met to rent a property you have never seen (other than web pictures) on good faith that he will be there the night your rental is scheduled to begin? Doesn't this sound like the beginings of the "vacation from hell?" On the flip side, this might be perfectly normal and customary. Can someone "in the know" enlighten me? more
